green book oscars

  • 91 movies have won the Oscar for best picture in the history of the Academy Awards.
  • We ranked all 91 films based on how well they fared with critics.

With the 91st Academy Awards now a wrap, we have a new Oscar best-picture winner: Peter Farrelly's controversial "Green Book."

Business Insider ranked all 91 films — from the first winner "Wings" in 1927 to "Green Book" — based on their critic score on reviews-aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. In the case of ties, we broke them based on their audience scores on the site (And if those were the same, the film with more user ratings came out on top.)

Some of the results may be a surprise ("Argo" is ... pretty high on the list), while others (notorious winner "Crash") probably won't be.

All 91 best picture Oscar winners are ranked below:

  • Do your belongings spark joy? That's what Marie Kondo is asking people to consider when they try to declutter their lives.
  • This method of organization has gotten a lot of buzz, and there's definitely something to be said about the power of a tidy space.
  • If you have a lot of stuff, decluttering can do more than just make you more organized — it can also make you money.
  • Here are seven reputable sites you can go to when you want to get rid of some old stuff and get paid for it.

If you're a Netflix buff, neat freak, or have just been keeping up with the latest headlines, you've probably heard a thing or two about Marie Kondo and her life-changing organizational method, KonMari. Kondo first came onto the scene as a professional organizer, then became a best-selling author on the subject, and now has a heart-warming Netflix series where she helps individuals find joy through decluttering their lives.

As a perpetually messy person, tidying up is always on my agenda, and decluttering is usually where I try to start. I say "try" because my attempts almost always fail. When it comes down to it, I have trouble getting rid of things. I get attached to material items, saving them for sentimentality's sake or with the hopes that one day I'll put them to better use. What I end up with is cluttered drawers full of old gadgets, clothes I don't really care for anymore, and other odds and ends I never got around to tossing.

My messy mindset may be why I've been so drawn to the buzzing world of Marie Kondo, who offers some unique insight on how to get organized for good. One of the main tenants of Kondo's famous KonMari method is to only keep items that spark joy. While this might mean something different for everyone, the general idea is that if something you own doesn't make you happy, you should get rid of it.

But just because something doesn't spark joy for you anymore doesn't mean that it won't make someone else happy. More importantly, there are probably a lot of people that would pay good money for some of your stuff. So, if you have a bunch of old stuff lying around, there's no better time than right now to start digging through and seeing what you could get rid of. And, if the feeling of being tidy isn't enough incentive, you can actually make some serious money selling your old things online.

Here are seven reputable sites where you can get rid of your old stuff and make some money in the meantime:

ThredUP

Clean out your closet with ThredUP

How it works: ThredUP makes your closet clean out process simple with three easy steps. First, thredUP sends you a free kit which you can fill with any women's and kid's clothing, jewelry, shoes, handbags, and accessories you'd like to get rid of — so long as the items are from thredUp's list of accepted brands. Then, you send your bag back to thredUP, where it will be processed. Once processed, you'll earn cash or credit for whatever thredUP chooses to accept.

ThredUP usually only accepts 40% of items in the average Clean Out Bag, but you can choose to have the rejected items recycled or sent back to you. ThredUP also offers two different payout options to help you get the most out of your sales (either immediately or after your items sell, the latter of which may earn you slightly more), as well as the option to donate your cash earnings.

Why you'll love it: ThredUP accepts over 35,000 brands including everyday wear brands like Gap to luxury designers like Gucci. They handle the photography and listings, so really all you have to do is clean out your closet, fill up your box, and leave the rest to the professionals. While relinquishing control means you may not make as much money as you could on some other sites, it also means that you can save a ton of time, and reap the rewards with minimal effort.

ThredUP also has a great new collaboration with one our favorite minimalist brands, Cuyana. With the Lean Closet initiative, you can earn Cuyana credit and discounts when you use the special Cuyana x thredUP clean out kits.

Luxury Garage Sale

Consign with Luxury Garage Sale

How it works: Luxury Garage Sale is an online consignment shop that specializes in pre-owned and vintage pieces from designer brands. If you have any luxury goods you want to get off your hands, you can have a Luxury Garage Sale rep pick them up for free (if you live near one of their boutiques), drop them off at one of their boutiques, or ship them in to be consigned for free. Then, the Luxury Garage Sale team will check to make sure your pieces are in great condition and are authentic. They'll come up with a price recommendation proposal for your approval. From there, a stylist team will handle the listing and selling of your piece.

Why you'll love it: When selling a very expensive piece, you want great service to help with any of your questions and make sure you're getting the best price. Luxury Garage Sale gives you this from the moment you sign up to consign, when they'll match you up with an account manager. This is your point of contact throughout the consignment process and they're there to answer any questions you may have and make your selling process a breeze.

The RealReal

Sell luxury goods on The RealReal

How it works: The RealReal accepts luxury and designer goods, but not just in fashion — they'll also take home decor and fine art. Simply choose to have your goods pick up at home (for free), ship them in to be authenticated with a free, prepaid label, or visited one of their Luxury Consignment Offices for a free valuation and drop-off. Their team of over 90 experts (including gemologists, art curators, and horologists) will evaluate and authenticate your pieces. Then they'll photograph, price, and list your items on the site for you.

Why you'll love it: If you have a lot of luxury items to sell, The RealReal is for you. They offer rewards for different commission levels, so the more you sell, the more you'll earn. You can also choose from three different payment options: direct deposit, a mailed check, or site credit which rewards you an extra 5% each month. If you like to shop on the site, this is a nice bonus. Most items on the site sell within three days, so you can expect a quick turnaround on your pieces — and the accompanying gratification. The RealReal also frequently offers heightened commissions on certain categories, which can work in your favor depending on what you have to sell.

What we know about Kim Jong Un's 3 possible heirs

Kim Jong Un and wife Ri Sol Ju

  • North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un is believed to have three children with his wife Ri Sol Ju.
  • There are few details on the kids, but they're believed to be between the ages of 10 months and 7 years old.
  • The eldest child is believed to be a boy who is expected to one day succeed Kim.

Like much of North Korea, the personal and family life of its dictator Kim Jong Un is shrouded in secrecy.

Though the North Korean leader will be meeting with President Donald Trump for a summit in Hanoi this week — following their historic meeting in Singapore last year — he remains an object of wild speculation and curiosity throughout much of the western world.

Little is known about his wife, Ri Sol Ju, and even less is known about the three young children the couple is believed to have.

Most of the currently available information about the family comes from South Korea's National Intelligence Service. But former US basketball star Dennis Rodman has also spoken to media about holding one of Kim's children during one of his controversial visits to the Hermit Kingdom, though the details he provided have not been independently corroborated.

Here's everything we know:

Most sources agree that Kim and his wife have had three children since their secretive marriage in 2009.

Kim's first child is believed to be a boy, born in 2010, and his second child was likely a daughter born in 2013. The fact that Kim has at least one male heir likely means that he would eventually succeed Kim to continue the family's dictatorship dynasty.

But the gender of Kim's third child, remains unknown. The child is believed to have been born in February 2017.

snap kitchen review 1

  • Snap Kitchen is a meal delivery service that makes it easy to eat healthy, without ever touching your stove.
  • Its ready-made meals, sides, beverages, and desserts are the most versatile and flexible we've seen yet — not to mention delicious and under 500 calories.
  • You can shop the meals ($3.99-$11.99) a la carte or sign up for a meal plan subscription, which will save you a little money and provide a customizable, consistent flow of healthy, tasty meals.

As much as I appreciate the missions of popular meal kit delivery services today — to make cooking a delicious meal quick and easy — sometimes I just don't have the time, patience, or energy to cook.

Despite the growing movement encouraging people to spend more time in the kitchen, you might remain a staunch non-believer (whether out of preference or necessity), but you still want to eat healthy and control what goes on your plate.

For busy, health-conscious eaters like you, ready-made meal delivery services are the better solution. In the past, we've reviewed the meals and meal plans from Veestro, which uses plant-based and organic ingredients, and Kettlebell Kitchen, which optimizes meals for active lifestyles

Read more: Kettlebell Kitchen is a healthy meal delivery service that could be the secret to keeping your fitness and nutrition resolutions in 2019

We've found, however, that a company founded in 2010 called Snap Kitchen provides the most versatile and flexible selection of healthy, delicious ready-made meals. They're sold at an average cost of $9.99 per meal, and can be purchased a la carte or as part of a meal plan.

snap kitchen review 2

Here's how Snap Kitchen works

A la carte meals: Start by browsing its large menu of meals, sides, beverages, snacks, and desserts. Snap makes its own meals and also carries health food brands such as Barnana, RX Bar, Vital Proteins, and Zupa Noma.

Breakfast meals range in price from $3.99 to $7.99 and include options like egg and brisket tacos and sweet potato veggie Benedicts. Lunch and dinner are a little more expensive, and range in price from $6.99 to $11.99. You can choose from meals like hot chicken with fusili and cheese or sweet chili glazed salmon. All of these meals clock in at less than 500 calories, with most being around 300 to 400 calories.

There are also sides (called 'components' on the site), small bites, soups and salads, desserts, and more.

For all these food choices, you can filter by diet type (keto, vegan, Whole30, etc.) and allergens (egg free, peanut free, soy free, etc.), so you'll be able to shop the meals without wasting time inspecting ingredient lists.

Screen Shot 2019 02 25 at 10.44.15 AM

Meal plan subscription: If you're looking for a more long-term and consistent commitment, try Snap Kitchen's subscription option, which saves you 5% to 10% on meal costs, gives you curated and customizable meal plans, and offers flexible delivery schedules.

If you know exactly what you want, you can go for the Build Your Own option. Otherwise, Snap Kitchen offers plans like Keto-Friendly, Paleo, Vegetarian, and Balance to make the process easier. You'll choose how many days' worth of meals you want (three, five, or seven), what meal types you want (breakfast, AM snack, drinks, etc.), and free delivery or pickup. There are currently Snap Kitchen stores in Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, and Philadelphia, where you can pick up your meals.

After seeing your plan, which also breaks down the daily nutritional content and weekly subtotal, you can add more food items, or proceed to checkout.

Snap Kitchen wants to ensure you have the freshest meal possible, so it doesn't deliver the meals all at once, unless you choose the three-day meal plan option. It will deliver twice a week for the five-day option and three times a week for the seven-day option.

Here's what to expect when you receive your Snap Kitchen meals

The company sent the Insider Picks team a selection of meals, drinks, and desserts to taste for ourselves. They arrived in cooler bags that kept them cold and fresh.

I loved how creative the recipes were and how they didn't fit my conception of what a typical "healthy" meal looked and tasted like. Some standouts included the bison quinoa hash, shrimp and cauliflower grits, and a surprisingly decadent brownie that satisfied my strong sweet tooth. The juices were also tasty and refreshing.

The meals are free of preservatives, and you'll be able to recognize all the ingredients, many of which are also organic. You can heat them up in the microwave — perfect for rushed mornings and office lunches — or in the oven if you have a little more time.

Packaging waste can be a big concern about meal delivery services, but Snap Kitchen's packaging is actually compostable. While it doesn't change the fact that you're still going through a lot of meal trays, you can reuse them for other uses, and it's comforting to know they're compostable.

The bottom line

Speed and convenience often involves a sacrifice of some sort, whether that's taste or nutrition value, but Snap Kitchen manages to nail all these priorities in one easy-to-use service. To make planning out and ordering meals even easier, it also offers an iOS app so you can always be in control of your healthy eating goals.

These vegan cookies are free of the 8 most common food allergens, but they taste close to the real deal

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

partake foods allergy free cookies

  • Partake Foods, founded by a mom who has a daughter with multiple food allergies, makes cookies that are free from the top eight food allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, wheat, milk, soy, fish, and shellfish).
  • Currently available in five flavors, including Birthday Cake, Double Chocolate Chip, and Carrot Oat, the crunchy mini cookies contain vegetable extracts and powders and have less sugar than traditional cookies.
  • They're also vegan and non-GMO certified. All of these descriptors might make you think they're not a worthy substitute for traditional cookies, but they actually taste good.

When you have food allergies, it's hard to enjoy many of life's simple, sweet pleasures — like cookies, for instance. A treat that most people can reach for at the company potluck and not think twice about might have severe consequences for someone with a food allergy.

According to Food Allergy Research and Education, eight allergens (peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, wheat, milk, soy, fish, shellfish) are responsible for most serious food allergy reactions in the US. One in 13 children have food allergies, and 40% of that subcategory is allergic to more than one food.

Though food allergies are on the rise (and the reason why is still unclear), there hasn't been a proportional increase in allergy-friendly packaged food products. As the mother of a child with multiple food allergies, Denise Woodard learned firsthand how hard it is to find safe and delicious substitutes for common snacks such as cookies.

The best way to ensure her daughter was consuming safe snacks was to make them herself, so Woodard started Partake Foods, a snack company that sells allergen-free, non-GMO, and vegan cookies.

partake foods allergy free cookies 3

All of Partake Foods' cookies are free from the top eight allergens, plus they're also mustard-, sulfite-, and sesame-free. They comply with industry standards for allergen controls, which includes segregating allergens during ingredient storage, and they're produced in a certified gluten-free factory.

The cookies from this Chobani Incubator startup come in five delicious flavors that, on the outset, seem like your standard garden variety type of cookie: a classic Birthday Cake here, a sweet Double Chocolate Chip there. But they're also secretly packed with vegetable extracts, powders, and juices, including organic beet powder and organic carrot powder. The colorful sprinkles of the Birthday Cake flavor come from spinach, broccoli, carrot, beets, and shiitake mushroom.

Other flavors, like the Carrot Oat and the Sweet Potato Millet feel more obviously "healthy," but the taste factor is still there.

In addition to being allergen-free and packed with clean, organic ingredients, the cookies contain less sugar and calories than traditional ones. One serving (three cookies) of Partake Foods cookies contains 7 to 8 grams of sugar and 130 to 140 calories, compared to one serving (three cookies) of Chips Ahoy cookies, which contains 11 grams of sugar and 160 calories.

partake foods allergy free cookies 2

I don't have any food allergies, but I would still choose Partake Foods cookies over traditional cookies as a better-for-you, vegan alternative. They're crunchy, they taste close to the real thing, and come in a perfectly sized snackable form.

For anyone with food allergies or parents of kids with food allergies, they're a welcome addition to the pantry and lunchbox because they're safe to eat, but they also actually taste good.

All too often, those with allergies have to sacrifice some important component of food — often taste, nutritional value, texture, or all of the above — if they want to eat the safe, allergen-free version. Partake Foods flips those assumptions on their head, providing tasty and healthy cookies that anyone can enjoy.

The mysterious life of Kim Jong Un's wife, Ri Sol Ju, who probably has 3 children and frequently disappears from the public eye

kim jong un xi jinping and wives

  • Kim Jong Un's wife, Ri Sol Ju, remains a mysterious but intriguing figure in the Kim family dynasty.
  • Though she remains a subject of curiosity, she reportedly did not accompany her husband on his trip to Hanoi for a summit with President Donald Trump this week.
  • She was first identified as Kim's wife in 2012 — but since then, few details beyond her fashion taste have emerged.

Ri Sol Ju, the wife of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, has for years been the subject of intense curiosity and international media speculation.

Despite her occasional media appearances alongside her husband, she reportedly won't be joining Kim in Hanoi, Vietnam, for the summit with President Donald Trump this week.

Over the last year, Ri has become a fashion hit in China after the couple paid a surprise visit to Beijing, and she has been seen cultivating what appears to be a warm friendship with South Korea's first lady, Kim Jung-sook.

But beyond her taste in fashion, few details are known about Ri, the woman who in 2012 was identified as Kim's wife.

She is thought to be 29 now and a mother to three children, according to South Korean intelligence reports. But the Hermit Kingdom's secretive government has not confirmed that information.

Ri doesn't appear in public very often. She's usually seen when Kim celebrates missile test launches, and is always photographed smiling politely, wearing clean-cut, pastel dresses.

She was reportedly born into an elite family — her father was a professor and her mother a doctor — but little else is known about her life, or how she ultimately became the wife of the world's most notorious living dictator.

Here's everything we know about Ri Sol Ju:

Ri's eventual public introduction was underwhelming, to say the least. North Korean media mentioned her almost as an afterthought during coverage of an amusement park opening in Pyongyang.

A photographer visited North Korea 6 times to see what life is really like — here's what he saw

NorthKoreaPhotos

  • President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are set to meet this week in Hanoi, Vietnam.
  • Photographer Eric Lafforgue has visited Kim Jung Un's North Korea six times to photograph life in the totalitarian country.
  • Lafforgue was banned after his sixth trip to North Korea, in 2012, after he made an off-handed comment about a group of Spanish tourists visiting the country.
  • Much of what he saw was the more affluent areas of North Korea, like Pyongyang, but he requested to visit far-flung destinations. He found that the further he traveled from Pyongyang, the more he saw the poverty in which most North Koreans live.

After publishing hundreds of photos from six visits to North Korea, it was an offhand comment that got French photographer Eric Lafforgue banned.

Lafforgue had seen Spanish tourists wearing Kim Jung Il shirts and told a friend that they likely wouldn't wear them in Barcelona. The Spaniards heard it and told the guide. One month after returning from the trip, he received a letter with screen captures of his photos, saying they were not good for North Korea and that he could not return.

That was in 2012.

"They know that when I come, I take pictures. They prefer the tourism money, until it causes a problem for one of the people in charge," Lafforgue told Business Insider.

Lafforgue has always been well aware of this, but throughout the years, he's played "their game," as he calls it, to produce some incredible photography.

“The North Korean regime controls everything that goes out of the country,” he said. “Even me, when they let me take a picture of kids smiling, its because it's good for the country. I take those pictures because there is a real part of the people that are happy and I want to document that ... North Koreans are brainwashed, but they live like everybody in the world.”

Lafforgue shared a stunning selection of photos from his many trips to North Korea with us. Many of the photos are available in a calender Lafforgue produced with North Korea-watching website NK News.

This is Pyongyang airport, where Lafforgue flew into.

All tourists must go on a guided tour when they visit North Korea. According to Lafforgue, the guides show more to tourists than stated journalists, so he always declared himself a tourist.

Each time Lafforgue visited, the guides tried to take him on the same "classic" tour to the expected sites.

How North Korean leader Kim Jong Un became one of the world's most feared dictators

kim jong un

  • Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader who is regarded as one of the world's most repressive and bombastic rulers, is meeting with President Donald Trump for the second time.
  • After a year of ushering in historic international peace agreements and much discussion over North Korea's nuclear arsenal, Kim's rule continues to cause concern on the world stage.
  • Despite his high-profile career, there is still relatively little known of the reclusive 35-year-old.
  • Here is the story of how he became one of the world's scariest dictators.

Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader who has presided over his country's shocking, uninvited entrance into the nuclear club, is meeting with President Donald Trump for the second time on February 27.

Kim, current head of the family dynasty that's ruled North Korea since the 1950s, has overseen several nuclear tests, dozens of missile tests, and the most tense, heated exchanges with a US commander in chief in his country's history.

But between threats of nuclear annihilation, brinkmanship, and attacks on South Korea, Kim — who assumed leadership at such a young age that many thought his rule would be doomed — has kept a firm grip on power throughout.

With all this attention, still relatively little is known of Kim.

Here's what we do know of how he grew to be one of the world's scariest dictators.

Paul Szoldra and Veronika Bondarenko contributed to a previous version of this post.

SEE ALSO: Mystery children, sibling rivalries, and sudden disappearances: This is Kim Jong Un's family tree

SEE ALSO: The mysterious life of Kim Jong Un's wife, Ri Sol Ju — who probably has 3 children and frequently disappears from the public eye

Kim Jong Un was born on January 8 — 1982, 1983, or 1984.

His parents were future North Korean dictator Kim Jong Il and his consort, Ko Young Hee. He had an older brother named Kim Jong Chul and would later have a younger sister named Kim Yo Jong.

While Kim Jong Un's official birth year is 1982, various reports suggest that the year was changed for symbolic reasons, including that it was 70 years after the birth of Kim Il Sung and 40 years after the birth of Kim Jong Il.

But when the US Treasury Department sanctioned Kim Jong Un, the agency listed his official date of birth as January 8, 1984.

Kim, here with his mother, lived at home as a child.

During this period, North Korea was ruled by "Great Leader" Kim Il Sung. While Kim Jong Il was the heir apparent, Kim Jong Un's path to command was far less certain.

Then it was off to Switzerland to attend boarding school.

Called "Pak Un" and described as the son of an employee of the North Korean embassy, Kim Jong Un is thought to have attended an English-language international school in Gümligen, near Bern.

Kim Jong Un is described by former classmates as a quiet student who spent most of his time at home, but he had a sense of humor, too.

"He was funny," former classmate Marco Imhof told The Mirror. "Always good for a laugh."

"He had a sense of humor; got on well with everyone, even those pupils who came from countries that were enemies of North Korea," another former classmate told the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag. "Politics was a taboo subject at school ... we would argue about football, not politics."

When I lived in Paris, visitors only ever asked for two things: to see the Eiffel Tower, and to stop by a French pharmacy.

France is famous for its quality skin care readily available in local pharmacies, and the not necessarily conscious thesis statement of gentle products that coddle skin rather than sterilize it is a stark departure from the astringents commonly found in the US. The legend of the French pharmacy is prevailing — and, I believe, well-earned.

However, flying to Paris every time you need a new face cream is not convenient per se. Luckily for us, you can find most of the cult-favorite products online these days if you just know what you're looking for. Below, you'll find a list of 17 of the most beloved, and where you can find them online.

Below are the 17 French pharmacy skin-care products to buy, and where to find them online:

A multi-purpose cream for everything from setting makeup in place to quenching dry skin

Embryolisse Concentrated Lait Cream 75 ml, $27.95

If you recognize this product's packaging, it's likely due to its  immense popularity in the States and abroad. The formula, created by a Parisian dermatologist, is a cocktail of natural ingredients like shea butter, soy protein, aloe vera, and beeswax that intensely hydrates as well as sets makeup in place. Like many of the products on this list, natural ingredients lend themselves well to being multipurpose. Use Embryolisse as a day cream, makeup remover, primer, and even as aftershave. It's earned its spot as a cult-favorite among makeup artists and models alike.

A water mist that calms and hydrates skin

Eau Thermale Avène Thermal Spring Water, 10.1 Oz, $18.50

Especially wonderful for sensitive skin, this thermal spring water coats skin in a protective, hydrating, mineral-rich mist that soothes, softens, and calms as it works to restore skin's natural balance. The company sites over 300 clinical studies that determined Eau Thermal does all three. If you're looking for healing and hydration, this is for you.

A micellar water that cleanses skin, removes makeup, and respects your skin's natural barrier

Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water, $11.74

If you asked a beauty veteran what to pick up from a Parisian pharmacy, this micellar water would almost undoubtedly be on the shortlist. The company estimates that a bottle is sold every two seconds, and it's firmly seated on Amazon's best-selling skin-care products. It gently cleanses skin and removes makeup without disrupting the skin's natural hydrolipid film. Thanks to the water's unique physiological pH, you shouldn't even have to rinse. It's also formulated to work with any skin texture.

How to tell if your Google Pixel phone is waterproof or water-resistant, and to what extent

$
0
0

Google Pixel 3

  • While the original Google Pixel was not waterproof or water-resistant, subsequent versions of the phone are varying degrees of water-resistant.
  • Google has improved the Pixel's water-resistant rating with each subsequent model.
  • The Google Pixel 3 has a rating on par with those of other new phones, like the iPhone XS and Galaxy S10.

It happened: That $1,000 phone you bought fell into a puddle, and the old rice-in-a-bag trick isn't working. Unfortunately, water protection isn't always a given, though that is changing for newer phone models.

If you're on the market for a new phone, getting a phone that's more water-resistant to being full-on submerged in water can provide peace of mind. (For what it's worth, no current phone is "waterproof" since none are completely impervious to water damage.)

But for those who are interested in a Google Pixel, here's what you need to know about the water-resistant specs for the phone's three iterations:

The original Google Pixel is not waterproof or water-resistant

Google Pixel

If water protection is a key feature, keep looking: The original Google Pixel phone is not waterproof or water-resistant. But if you're looking to buy a brand new phone through the manufacturer, you don't have to worry about this at all: Google doesn't sell the original Pixel model (or the first XL) anymore.

Google Pixel 2 models are water-resistant to a degree

Google Pixel 2 2

According to Google, Pixel 2 models have a "water-resistant metal unibody with a grade of IP67," under standards from the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), which sets the standards for things like waterproofing and dust-resistance. "IP67" means that the Pixel 2 can be submerged in up to a meter of water for up to half an hour, according to Trusted Reviews. (For those of us not yet on the metric system, that's about three feet.)

So while the Pixel 2 isn't 100% waterproof in all situations — and you shouldn't necessarily try to use it underwater — it can handle those common occurrences where your phone just slips out of your hand and into the kitchen sink. (Or wherever, no judgement.)

It also comes with a two-year warranty if you buy the device through Google. Keep in mind, however, that the charger and any accessories to the phone are not waterproof or water resistant, according to Google.

The Google Pixel 3 is slightly more water-resistant

Google Pixel 3

The Pixel 3, Google's latest iteration of the phone, has a rating of IP68, which means that it's slightly more water-resistant than its predecessor. It can withstand being submerged in up to 1.5 meters for 30minutes, according to Trusted Reviews.

Again, the water-resistance doesn't apply to the phone's charger or accessories. But having that extra bit of protection may be a good idea for those who suffer from slippery fingers around expensive electronic devices. Especially if you're the type of skip on insurance, or yours doesn't cover water damage.

How the Pixel 3 stacks up to its competition

For comparison's sake, both the upcoming Galaxy S10 and the iPhone XS carry the same IP68 rating as the Pixel 3. But Samsung specifies that the Galaxy S10 is rated only for freshwater. Apple, on the other hand, has said that its IP68-rated iPhone XS has a maximum depth of two meters.

Waterproofing is just one of many, many specs that help make a phone worth the expense. And on that point, Google's Pixel 3 rating is right up there with the other new phone models. But before you go forward with any purchase, be sure to check whether or not the warranty covers water-related damage — some manufacturers (Samsung, for instance) won't replace your phone if it ends up getting waterlogged. And maybe pick up a waterproof case while you're at it.

The best vegetable fermenting and picking kit

Why you'll love it: If you can't get enough of tasty, fermented foods such as pickled veggies, sauerkraut, and kimchi, make your own with the Easy Fermenter Wide Mouth Lid Kit

Fermented foods aren't just tasty — they are excellent for your health, as well. The bacteria that carry out the process of fermentation are also very friendly to your gut, and once inside their new home, they do their best to regulate your digestive health. But that's probably not the main reason you'll have so much fun with the Easy Fermenter Wide Mouth Lid Kit.

You'll get three specially designed fermenting lids that fit onto standard wide-mouth canning jars, though you'll have to buy jars separately. The lids let carbon dioxide escape while keeping mold and harmful bacteria out. You also get three glass weights to keep your veggies below the brine level for superior results and a pump to remove oxygen from the bottles.

There's no need to "burp" the jars during the fermenting process — just sit back and wait. Within a couple of weeks, you'll be enjoying your first batch of delicious pickles or other fermented fruits and veggies.

You also get full access to the "Fermenting Club," where you'll find recipes, instructional videos, fellow pickling fans, and everything you need to know to enjoy your new hobby.

In the words of one pleased Amazon reviewer, "These lids make it so easy, I can't stop! I've got six kinds of fermented veggies in the fridge and another six fermenting in the cabinet. Right now, it's radishes, eggplant, sauerkraut, and some others. Enjoy!"

Pros: Lids prevent food from molding and control gas exchange during fermentation, a dialed date indicator makes it easy to track the progress of your fermentation, excellent online support community for recipes, suggestions, and ideas

Cons: A few buyers had mold even with the lids, or complained of air leaks

The best book to learn how to sculpt with polymer clay

Why you'll love it: With the detailed instructions in The Polymer Clay Techniques Book, you'll soon be making beads, figurines, boxes, and bowls.

Unlike traditional clay, which comes from the earth, polymer clay is actually made of a moldable plastic that hardens in the oven — no kiln necessary. Nor do you need to paint or glaze the finished project, as you'll find polymer clay in a wide range of colors.

The Polymer Clay Techniques Book guides you through all the basics of working with this fun and versatile crafting material. You'll learn about color mixing, how to cut, carve, buff, and manipulate the clay, how to create millefiori and other types of beads, all about armatures, the basics of sculpting figures, and so much more.

By the end of the book, you'll be ready to move on to more advanced projects, such as those found in Creating Lifelike Figures in Polymer Clay: Tools and Techniques for Sculpting Realistic Figures, which covers the basics before moving into the techniques involved in turning a lump of polymer clay into a realistic sculpture of a person or fantasy creature.

Before getting started, you'll need some polymer clay. The Sculpey III Multipack contains 10 vibrant colors, including red, yellow, blue, green, and brown, and is excellent for beginners.

Pros: The best guide to all the basics of working with polymer clay

Cons: None to speak of

Alain and Gerard Wertheimer

  • The Wertheimer family fortune dates back to 1920s Paris when Pierre Wertheimer funded designer Coco Chanel.
  • His grandsons, brothers Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, control Chanel today, which generated $9.6 billion in 2018.
  • They own 3 vineyards in France and one in Napa Valley. They also breed and race thoroughbreds, according to Forbes.
  • The brothers have a combined net worth of $42 billion.

Alain and Gerard Wertheimer, co-owners of luxury brand Chanel, are amongst the 10 richest people living in France. Their wealth, while largely inherited, has been grown through business deals and acquisitions spanning retail, wine, and horse racing.

The brothers are largely tight-lipped, hardly ever speaking to the press or giving interviews about their wealth, companies, family, relationships, or hobbies. They live lavish lifestyles in private, surrounding themselves with those similarly closemouthed, and are known as fashion's quietest billionaires.

With a combined net worth over $40 billion, the Wertheimer brothers are among the richest people in the world.

Here's a look at their lifestyle.

Alain, 70, and brother Gerard Wertheimer, 67, both have a net worth of $21 billion for a combined net worth of $42 billion.

Their wealth began with their grandfather's acquisition of Chanel, the French fashion house, which they both co-own today. They also own various vineyards across the world and racehorses.

Porsche just confirmed that the best-selling Macan SUV will soon be all electric

Porsche Macan S 2019

  • The PorscheMacan is the brand's best-selling model and accounts for nearly half of its total sales.
  • The German automaker confirmed on Tuesday that the next generation Macan compact luxury SUV will be all electric.
  • The Macan EV will be built on the Porsche PPE platform.
  • According to Porsche, the next generation Macan is expected to debut at the beginning of the next decade.

The Porsche Macan has been a smash hit since its introduction in 2015. The compact luxury SUV is, by far, the brand's best selling model. In 2018, the Macan accounted for more than 41% of the 57,202 cars Porsche sold in the US.

On Tuesday, Porsche announced that the second generation Macan will be all electric.

"The next generation of the Macan fires the starting pistol for electrification," Porsche said in a statement.

According to Porsche, the new Macan is set to enter production at the beginning of the next decade and will be built at the company's plant in Leipzig, Germany.

Read more: We took an $81,000 Porsche Macan GTS on a road trip to see if it's a sports car in an SUV body — here's the verdict.

The new Macan will be on the Porsche PPE platform developed with fellow VW Group subsidiary Audi AG.

In addition, the brand's first all-electric SUV will feature 800-volt fast charging technology.

The Macan is part of Porsche's broader investment in electrification.

"By 2022 we will be investing more than six billion euros in electric mobility, and by 2025 50% of all new Porsche vehicles could have an electric drive system," Porsche CEO Oliver Blume said in a statement.

Porsche's first EV, the Taycan, known initially as the Mission E, is expected to hit the market at the end of the year. It's a mid-size, high-performance electric sedan that will compete with the likes of the Tesla Model S. After the Taycan sedan, Porsche is expected to follow with the Taycan Cross Turismo electric crossover.

How you can use a Visa gift card to shop on Amazon, despite it not being directly accepted

$
0

visa gift card debit

  • You can use a prepaid Visa gift card to make purchases on Amazon, but you have to work around the system to make it happen.
  • Amazon will not allow split payments between gift cards loaded onto an account and other payment methods, so you have to line up the price of your purchases with your gift card balance.
  • Here's how to load a Visa gift card onto an Amazon account so you can use it to shop with the online retailer.

If Amazon had its way, everyone would stick with Amazon gift cards. And while an Amazon gift card is a great gift and all, a Visa gift card is even better — in fact, a Visa gift card even beats cash. Why? Because you can't use an Amazon card at the local pizza restaurant, a gas station, or to buy movie tickets, and you can't use cash to shop on Amazon or other online retailers.

To use a Visa gift card on Amazon, you essentially have to trick the site into thinking you're simply adding another credit or debit card onto your account, and not using as gift card at all. So before you add the card's balance to your account, you need to make sure the Visa is ready for action.

And note that you can't split purchases between a gift card loaded onto your account and another payment method, so be sure to shop with care and your balance in mind. Or better yet, see the hack at the end of this article!

Make sure your Visa gift card is activated and ready

First, make sure the gift card has been activated (which should have happened at the time of the sale). You might have received a gift receipt or a card holder confirming its activated status, but you can also just call the phone number on the back of the card.

Next, check the card's balance. This is especially important if you have already used it, but as gift cards often have activation fees, that $50 card may actually have a $49 balance. You'll need to know the exact dollar and cent number, so don't skip this step!

Loading a Visa gift card on Amazon

To get started, go to Amazon's homepage on your computer or pull it up on your phone. Most of the steps are the same, so I won't differentiate — just know that you can substitute the word "Click" for "Tap" if you're on a computer instead of a mobile device.

amazon

  1. Go to the "Your Account" page from the dropdown menu from the three parallel lines at the top left of the page (or by hovering over the "Account & List" tab at the top right on a computer).
  2. Tap the "Manage payment options" link.

    amazon 2
  3. Under the words "Amazon Gift Card," tap "Reload your balance."

    amazon 3
  4. Enter in the balance on the card in the box ready "$ Enter an amount..." then click "Add a card" down below.

    amazon 4
  5. Add the info exactly as shown on the card, meaning the card number and the "name," which may be "A Gift for You" or some other short statement, and the expiration date.
  6. Enter the address as your own when prompted (though the card is not technically tied to any location).
  7. When next you shop on Amazon, make sure to select the gift card you just loaded as your payment method — you can identify it by the last four digits of the number on the front.

Another hack for using Visa gift cards on Amazon

It's kind of annoying that you can't use a gift card along with another mode of payment, right? But you can use your card's balance to buy an Amazon gift card (or code) that you give to yourself, and that can be used for anything on the site and combined freely with another payment method.

Michael Cohen has reportedly been disbarred in New York state

  • Michael Cohen has reportedly been disbarred in the state of New York.
  • State law says an individual cannot practice law if they've been convicted of a felony.
  • Cohen pleaded guilty to several counts of tax evasion, bank fraud, and campaign finance violations as part of the Manhattan US attorney's investigation into his and President Donald Trump's financial dealings during the 2016 election.
  • Cohen also pleaded guilty to one count of lying to Congress as part of the special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation.
  • Cohen plans to publicly accuse Trump of criminal conduct in office when he testifies before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday.

Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's longtime former lawyer and fixer who is embroiled in multiple criminal investigations, has been disbarred in the state of New York, Bloomberg News reported Tuesday, citing a state appeals court ruling.

Cohen kicked off a marathon week of congressional testimony on Tuesday, when he appeared before the Senate Intelligence Committee for a closed-door hearing about the Russia investigation and his dealings with Trump.

On Wednesday, Cohen will go before the House Oversight Committee for a public hearing in which he's expected to accuse the president of criminal conduct while in office. The oversight hearing will not focus on issues related to the Russia investigation. Instead, Cohen reportedly plans to shed light on Trump's character and financial dealings. He is expected to provide documentary evidence to support his claims.

Cohen on Thursday will appear before the House Intelligence Committee, led by Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, for another closed-door hearing about the committee's Russia probe.

Cohen pleaded guilty in August 2018 to several counts of tax evasion, bank fraud, and campaign finance violations in the Manhattan US attorney's office investigation into his and Trump's business dealings during the 2016 election.

In November 2018, Cohen pleaded guilty to one count of lying to Congress in the special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation, specifically over testimony before the House Intelligence Committee in 2017 regarding the Trump Tower Moscow deal.

Read more:Michael Cohen plans to publicly accuse Trump of criminal conduct in office during dramatic testimony before Congress

New York law states that an individual cannot practice law if they've been convicted of a felony. According to state law, Cohen can apply for readmission to the bar in seven years.

Though the president initially defended Cohen following an FBI raid on his property, the White House subsequently began distancing itself from Trump's longtime lawyer and fixer. Cohen reportedly felt betrayed by the president and decided to cooperate with prosecutors soon after.

Cohen served as the Trump Organization's lead lawyer for over a decade before leaving the company in 2017 to be Trump's personal lawyer. His proximity to Trump, as well as his elevated position on the campaign and in Trump's personal life, makes him one of the most dangerous cooperators against the president to date, legal scholars told INSIDER last year.

The president and his associates have frequently characterized Cohen as a liar since the lawyer stopped working for the president. Republican lawmakers on the House Oversight Committee also plan to paint Cohen as a liar whose statements can't be trusted.

But legal experts said their attacks may be undermined if Cohen can support his allegations with documentary evidence, as he reportedly plans to do.

Cohen is due to begin serving a three-year prison sentence in May.

  • Daily Harvest isn't the cheapest healthy-eating option ($7 - $8 per meal), but we think it has an unrivaled combination of taste and convenience.

Daily Harvest, if you haven't heard of it, is a startup that sends you frozen cups of pre-portioned meals that a team of nutritionists and chefs co-design for equal taste and nutrition. Each cup typically runs from $7-$8, and you can order everything from healthy lattes to harvest bowls to smoothies that can be made in under a minute at home — typically by pouring the contents into a blender, pan, or microwave-safe bowl. They're always plant-based, gluten-free, and organic, and they'll come in shipments either weekly or monthly, depending on your preference.

In other words, Daily Harvest is the loophole you should mention the next time you're watching a red carpet show and someone says "No wonder they all look so amazing — I'd look like that too if I had a chef making delicious and healthy foods for me every night." That's probably why it counts so many big names as its investors: Serena Williams, Gwyneth Paltrow, and celebrity chef Bobby Flay, to name a few.

Daily Harvest has already made healthy lunches, dinners, and complex smoothies easier. Now, the company has addressed breakfast with "breakfast bowls" (starting at $6.99) inspired by its customers' beloved breakfast foods — like an open-faced burrito or cheesy grits. This way, you can enjoy "slow foods" even if you're running out the door or already at the office, quietly chewing while on a conference call.

Rachel Drori, Founder and CEO of Daily Harvest, told Business Insider "The idea for breakfast bowls came directly from our devotees ... it became clear they wanted some vegetable-packed savory options made especially for this time of day. Our in-house chef and nutritionist co-create all of our delicious recipes directly with our customers, so we were able to create not just any savory breakfast items, but the very flavors they were craving."

The collaboration doesn't stop there. After the in-house chefs and nutritionists, who work hand-in-hand at the startup's headquarter kitchen, take customer ideas and then create recipes from scratch, they invite the same people to try the dishes ahead of their launch. Based on customer feedback, the team creates more and more iterations until they're finally ready to launch. Even then, Drori says "The process is never complete. Even after we launch something new, we refine our recipes for months afterward based on how our community responds."

For the breakfast line, the team took into account what the body needs to begin the day effectively.

"When it comes to breakfast in particular, we really focused on whole nutrition with all of the macro and micronutrients you need to kick-start your day and maintain energy and focus until lunch," Drori explained.

Here are the breakfast bowls that are currently available:

All of them are organic, plant-based, and gluten-free, and preparation is as simple as dumping the farm-frozen contents into a microwavable bowl. Find more on how each one tastes in our personal reviews further down.

The cost and other concerns

If $7 on breakfast isn't so bad to you, and you're after convenient, healthy foods that require zero prep, this could be a great option. They're tasty, healthy, and as easy to make as dumping farm-frozen foods into a microwavable bowl (you can also use the stove if you prefer).

If you're on a budget, the price can be hard to justify at $6.99 per cup. But, if you like the sound of them, it may be a good compromise to get a small monthly box and have them on hand for busy mornings where convenience is the top priority. It's also worth considering what it would be like to recreate these recipes at home. As a single person buying groceries for one, it can be less expensive to buy diverse, healthy meals this way. Even if I trusted myself to go buy the organic cauliflower, tomato, butternut squash, kale, flax seeds, and za'atar to make the Butternut Squash Kale Shakshuka, I would likely see a portion of those ingredients go to waste or grow tired of eating it every day in order to see a financial benefit from home shopping. And, being honest with myself, I probably wouldn't reliably make this for myself — mornings are the busiest part of my day, and breakfast is almost always on the chopping block. If I do eat, it's not healthy — it's fast.

It's also worth noting that some cups are more filling than others. You may find yourself having to supplement one or two of them with more food to fill you up. We didn't run into that most days, but it depends on you, and what you'd be happy to get for $6.99 per meal.

My last concern was its ecological impact. According to Drori, the company's packaging is now 100% recyclable, and shipping packaging is made from post-consumer materials. For instance, if you cut open the liners, you'll find recycled denim — "possibly your jeans from high school, which is biodegradable."

All in all, Daily Harvest delivers on its claims of fast, tasty, healthy food. If that's worth the cost to you, you should give it a try to see if it's a good fit for your lifestyle.

We tried the Daily Harvest Breakfast Bowls. Find our thoughts on each below.

Sweet Potato + Wild Rice Hash

Tastes like: Breakfast Burrito Bowl

The Sweet Potato + Wild Rice Hash was delicious, and it kept me full — but not weighed down or stuffed — for longer than I would expect a breakfast (healthy or not) to. Daily Harvest would likely attribute this to the all-star ingredients of sweet potato and wild rice for slow-burning energy. The avocado was a great addition, and the warm mushrooms were tasty — and they supposedly boost immune support. The only thing I was more excited about that taste and nutrition is that the extent of preparation was just dumping this cup into a microwave-safe bowl. — Mara Leighton, reporter

Spinach + Shiitake Grits

Tastes like: Cheesy Grits with Greens

I really liked Daily Harvest's cheese grits. Granted, they weren't really anything like cheese grits, but they tasted delicious. The mushrooms gave it a heartier feel and earthier flavor, and I felt full after eating a bowl at work (and it usually takes a lot for me to feel full in the morning). — Sally Kaplan, editor

Broccoli Rice + Dill Pilaf

Tastes Like: Lemon-Dill Grain Bowl

Dietary: Keto

This bowl was tasty, and that's surprising coming from someone who wouldn't call themselves a fan of dill. It's going to look lean, and you may need to supplement it later on in the day, but it will give you the sort of clean energy that feels light — never weighed down. The crunchy seed blend was a great texture and a good source of protein, and broccoli rice and coconut cream were delicious under lemon-dill dressing. All in all, a good breakfast, though you may be a little underwhelmed by the portion size.— Mara Leighton, reporter

Matt Gaetz

  • Rep. Matt Gaetz, a Republican on the House Oversight Committee, appeared to threaten to release publicly embarrassing details about Michael Cohen one day before Cohen is scheduled to testify before the panel.
  • "Hey @MichaelCohen212 - Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends?" Gaetz tweeted. "Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She's about to learn a lot."
  • Gaetz's tweet came on the heels of a Wall Street Journal report that said Cohen plans to publicly accuse President Donald Trump of criminal conduct while in office when he testifies on Wednesday.
  • Shortly after Gaetz sent out the tweet, some legal experts suggested his statement could amount to witness intimidation and obstruction of justice. Gaetz denied that, saying he was "witness testing."

Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz drew swift backlash after sending out a tweet in which he appeared to threaten to release embarrassing details about Michael Cohen's personal life on the eve of Cohen's testimony before the panel.

"Hey @MichaelCohen212 - Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends?" Gaetz tweeted. "Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She’s about to learn a lot."

Cohen is scheduled to testify before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday morning. Gaetz's tweet came on the heels of a Wall Street Journal report that said Cohen, President Donald Trump's former longtime lawyer and fixer, plans to accuse Trump of criminal conduct in office during the hearing.

Gaetz's tweet raised red flags among some legal experts, who said the congressman's statements could be seen as attempted witness intimidation and obstruction of justice.

Ken White, a criminal defense attorney at Brown, White, and Osborn LLP, wrote, "Dear Representative @mattgaetz .... are you represented by federal criminal defense counsel?"

"It sure seems like you're threatening Michael Cohen that if he testifies before Congress you, or people aligned with you, will bring out embarrassing details about him," White continued. "There's a whole bunch of obstruction statutes, sir, and if you're threatening to reveal embarrassing information to deter a witness from testifying before Congress, I think you need advice about whether you may be violating one or more of them."

The former federal prosecutor Renato Mariotti also chimed in, writing, "This appears to be an attempt to intimidate a witness before he testifies before the House Oversight Committee tomorrow."

When the Vox reporter Alex Ward asked Gaetz if he had a few minutes to discuss what he implied in his tweet about Cohen, Gaetz replied, "Watch tomorrow."

"Will do," Ward said. "Anything I should be prepared for?"

"Fireworks," Gaetz responded.

Asked whether he had any response to suggestions that he was engaging in witness tampering, Gaetz said, "I’m witness testing. We still are allowed to test the veracity and character of witnesses, I think."

Gaetz, a member of the House Judiciary Committee, is a staunch ally of the White House and took center stage during several congressional hearings surrounding the FBI's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Gaetz, California Rep. Devin Nunes, and several members of the House Freedom Caucus led the charge in investigating accusations of misconduct and surveillance abuse at the highest levels of the FBI and Justice Department.

Gaetz has also joined the White House in coming out swinging against Cohen in recent months, after Cohen pleaded guilty to several felonies and began cooperating with prosecutors. In particular, Trump and his allies say that because Cohen pleaded guilty to lying to investigators, among other things, his word cannot be trusted.

But legal experts told INSIDER that those attacks may be undermined because Cohen reportedly plans to support his claims before the committee with documentary evidence.

Gaetz did not immediately respond to a request for comment from INSIDER.
