There's a tiny boarding school in Vermont where students work on a dairy farm and can live in cabins without electricity — and it produced one of the most influential billionaires in Silicon Valley

The Putney School

  • The Putney School, located in southern Vermont, is small and located on a dairy farm.
  • The 238 students there must work on the farm and in other jobs to graduate.
  • They don't learn their grades until halfway through high school.

Reid Hoffman
cofounder of LinkedIn and a Greylock Partners investor, always had an independent streak. At 12, he applied to The Putney School, a tiny boarding school in southern Vermont, without telling his parents.

"Part of what appealed to me about Putney was that in addition to having academics, it was doing blacksmithing and woodworking and working on the farm and art and a bunch of things that I wouldn't otherwise had experience to do," Hoffman told Business Insider's Rich Feloni on an episode of  the podcast "Success! How I Did It."

Putney is certainly unique. Students don't learn their grades until more than halfway through high school, and have work requirements on campus, including on the dairy farm where Putney is located.

"Work on the farm, in the gardens, and in the woods is required of all students for graduation," the school's website explains. "New technology and old are combined to find a way to live more lightly on the land."

Keep reading below to see all of the aspects that make Putney a distinctive high school experience.

Located in Putney, Vermont, the school is a progressive boarding school located on a 500-acre working dairy farm.

It's small, with 238 students and an average class size of 11.

It costs $56,800 a year to attend for boarding students. The cost to attend puts it in the range of tuition at Ivy League colleges.

Day students pay $34,300 a year and the school awards financial aid to 43% of students, meaning almost half don't pay full price to attend.

American political polarization is playing out in grocery stores and restaurants — here's what brands are getting burned in Trump's America

Alt Right Brands

  • American political polarization is playing out on the dinner table with a recent round of brand boycotts
  • While the left is ditching Papa John's, the right is cutting out Starbucks and tossing Keurigs out the window.
  • The foods we eat eat are a shorthand for certain beliefs — and that can be dangerous for different brands.

The past two years have seen an unending series of politically sparked boycotts and counter-boycotts.

Now, as Thanksgiving nears, the boycotts seem to be playing out on dinner plates across America.

"We've never seen something like this — a consumer awakening, if you will," Chris Allieri, the founder of the communications and marketing firm Mulberry & Astor, told Business Insider on the rise of consumer boycotts in recent years.

In an effort to see how political divisions are dividing the American diet, we rounded up foods that have been politicized by the left and right over the last few years. Here are all the brands that have been sucked into politics and hit with boycotts, through everything from alt-right-led Twitter campaigns to anti-Trump spreadsheets.

SEE ALSO: Ivanka Trump is stealing a strategy out of the first lady's playbook — and it's a brilliant political move

Over the last two years, a new right-wing social media movement has risen in prominence — and that means new boycott threats.

Not every right-wing boycott starts with the alt-right, a loosely allied group of white supremacists, men's rights activists, and other far-right individuals.

However, with the social media power of many alt-right personalities who aggressively supported Donald Trump's political rise, right-wing boycotts are often rooted in or amplified by certain individuals or websites.

Perhaps no brand is a bigger target for the right than Starbucks.

Starbucks' most recent "scandal" is that it is currently featuring a cartoon lesbian couple in an ad and, potentially, on cups, leading to some backlash. However, this #BoycottStarbucks flap is nothing compared to past drama.

In February, some customers threatened to boycott the coffee giant after the company spoke out against the executive order barring immigrants from seven majority-Muslim countries from entering the US.

In late 2016, alt-right Twitter user Baked Alaska challenged his 123,000 followers to go to Starbucks and tell the employees that their names are Trump to "trigger SJW" employees.

And, while he was campaigning in late 2015, Donald Trump encouraged boycotting the chain for its lack of Christmas cheer.

Basically, if you're a pro-Trump conservative, Starbucks has been at the top of the boycott list for a long time. And, with its dedication to progressive social causes, it's likely to stay there for a while longer.

Keurig recently entered the spotlight as some people smashed their coffee makers to support Fox News host Sean Hannity.

Keurig faced backlash when it cut advertising on "Hannity" after the show ran an arguably sympathetic interview with Roy Moore, an Alabama GOP Senate candidate accused of sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old and other teens.

Many Hannity supporters promised to boycott the coffee brand, with some going as far as posting videos of themselves smashing their Keurig coffee machines.

Keurig's CEO apologized to employees for appearing to take sides in a political debate. Hannity decided to accept the apology himself, and promised to replace the coffee machines of people who smashed their Keurigs. So, at the end of the day, Keurig seems to have actually boosted sales over the course of the drama.

It's about to get more expensive for British passengers to fly long-haul in anything above economy

  • British passengers flying long-haul in anything above economy will have to spend more on air passenger duty (APD) following measures set out in the budget.
  • Chancellor Philip Hammond also announced plans to freeze APD for economy passengers, meaning no price hikes for years.
  • The move is an effort to "keep costs down for the vast majority of passengers."

It's about to get more expensive for British passengers to fly long-haul in premium economy, business, and first class.

The budget, delivered by Chancellor Philip Hammond on Wednesday, raised air passenger duty (APD) for customers on long-haul flights in anything above economy from 2019. Private jet rides will also get more costly.

But there was good news for the majority of passengers. The government will continue to freeze APD on short-haul economy flights, while the cost of long-haul economy flights will also be frozen at levels introduced in April next year.

Here are APD rates for next year:

APD

And the rates for April 2019:

APD2

Premium economy, business, and first class tickets will go up by £16, while private jet flights will increase by £47.

The new legislation will be introduced in Finance Bill 2017-18 to amend section 30 Finance Act 1994.

"This measure will impact on some individuals, households, and families who travel by air," the government said. "Freezing the short-haul and reduced long-haul APD rates for the tax year 2019 to 2020 will keep costs down for the vast majority of passengers. However, increasing the standard and higher long-haul rates will mean some passengers will pay more for their flights."

APD was introduced in 1994 as a tax to pay for the environmental costs of air travel, according to Skyscanner. The idea is that it makes passengers "think twice before flying" — and it delivers billions in revenue.

It applies to passengers on every flight departing from the UK.

• Many people will have time off this week, due to Thanksgiving.

• Business Insider reached out to some experts on how to set yourself up for success during a long weekend.

• Their suggestions focused on prioritizing tasks, setting technology guidelines, and spending time with loved ones.

Thanksgiving is nearly here.

That means you most likely have a few extra days off to add to your normal weekend.

But how should you spend that extra time?

If you're not sure how to make the most of the next few days, we've got some ideas.

Here are 17 things successful people do before and over long weekends:

SEE ALSO: 11 things unsuccessful people do over long weekends

DON'T MISS: 14 sleeping habits of unsuccessful people

1. They plan ahead

Many successful people plan out their activities for the holiday weekend well in advance so that they are not drawn into the temptation of working, says Michael Kerr, an international business speaker and author of "The Humor Advantage." They make reservations, book tee times, or schedule activities with their kids.

"They're strategic enough to have an action plan for the three-day weekend, but flexible enough to tackle any urgent work issues that may arise," says Lynn Taylor, a national workplace expert and the author of "Tame Your Terrible Office Tyrant: How to Manage Childish Boss Behavior and Thrive in Your Job."

2. They prepare at work

"Most of what they do happens before they leave for a long weekend so that they are psychologically free to relax and enjoy it," Kerr says.

This includes saying proper goodbyes to colleagues, cleaning up their office, finishing any pressing tasks, and creating a clear plan of action for when they return to the office so they can hit the ground running.

3. They unplug

Not only do they set guidelines, but truly successful people actually put their phones and laptops away — at least for part of the weekend.

Don't sit and stare at screens during your time off. Unplug and try to use as little technology as possible. It will help you sleep better and can keep your mind clear.

The mall doesn't open until its 'anchor stores' do

"Anchor stores such as Macy's, Nordstrom, and Target make the decision for the entire mall. The mall opens when they open, and those that don't comply are fined by the mall for every hour they stay closed. Some stores like Apple acknowledge this and happily pay those fines."

Black Friday sales are usually on older models and are often the same deal as last year

"Most of the bigger deals are actually outdated products. Yeah, you have your new tablets and phones, but those will be very limited in both how many there are and how much you can save. Most of the biggest and most tempting savings come from products that are at least a year old or more and they have to clear out the inventory in the warehouses."

According to a study from NerdWallet, 93% of stores offered customers at least one product for the exact same price in 2014 as in their 2013 Black Friday ad.

These products would probably have gone on sale anyway

"New product lines come out a couple weeks after Black Friday, so those older items that are on sale on Black Friday would go on sale anyway."

  • Four of the models that walked in this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show have made Forbes' list of the highest-paid models in the world in 2017.
  • Despite a chaotic lead-up to this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai, the iconic show went off with the usual bang.
  • There were a few notable absences, like supermodels Gigi Hadid and Kylie Jenner.

Forbes has released its ranking of the 10 highest-paid models in the world in 2017 — and four of the models who walked in this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion show have made the list.

The annual event took place in Shanghai, China, Monday, and will be broadcast on November 28.

The iconic show, famed for its dramatic, colourful, and skimpy outfits, is one of the most prestigious gigs a model can land. Gaining your "angel wings" — intricately designed pairs of wings given to the most highly regarded models in the show — is a whole other privilege.

Despite a chaotic lead-up to the fashion show which saw a number of models reportedly be denied Chinese visas, it went with the usual bang helped by entertainment from Harry Styles, Miguel, and Leslie Odom Jr.

There were a few notable absences, including supermodel besties Gigi Hadid and Kylie Jenner, who both gained their angel wings on stage at the 2016 show.

Despite missing the show, Jenner has been crowned the world's highest paid model by Forbes, billing an impressive £16.6 million ($22 million) over the course of the year thanks mainly to deals with Estee Lauder, La Perla, and Adidas, as well as her own clothing line. She earned more than double anyone else on the list, and casually knocked Gisele Bündchen off the top spot for the first time in 15 years.

Hadid came in at fifth place, earning a a cool $9.5 million (£7.1 million) over the year despite not appearing in the show. Her younger sister Bella, who did walk in Shanghai, was also ranked among the top 10 highest earners this year.

Meanwhile, Joan Smalls, Taylor Hill, Candice Swanepoel, and Lily Aldridge all missed this year's $5.5 million (£4.1 million) threshold to be ranked among the top 10.

Scroll down to discover the top billing models to walk in this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, ranked in ascending order.

*The earnings are an estimate based on income from all modelling contracts, both from Victoria Secret as well as other companies.

4. Bella Hadid — $6 million (£4.5 million)

bella hadid

21-year-old Hadid was the youngest person to make the highest earning models list this year. She came in at ninth place overall. Her wealth comes from contracts with brands like Dior, Nike, and Nars, according to Forbes.

Hadid's Instagram @bellahadid has an impressive 15.7 million followers.

3. Liu Wen — $6.5 million (£4.9 million)

Chinese-born Liu Wen became the first Asian model to take to the VS runway in 2009. 29-year-old Wen makes her money working with brands like luxury lingerie maker La Perla and Puma, and was the eighth highest-paid model overall in 2017, according to Forbes.

Her Instagram @liuwenlw has 3.4 million followers

2. Karlie Kloss — $9 million (£6.8 million)

Karlie Kloss

Kloss returned to the runway for this year's Victoria Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai. The 25-year-old has covered Vogue 36 times, Forbes reports, more than each year of her life. She came in as the seventh-highest billing model in the world overall.

Her Instagram @karliekloss has seven million followers.

1. Adriana Lima — $10.5 million (£7.9 million)

adriana lima

Brazilian-born Adriana Lima is the longest-serving Victoria's Secret Angel ever, and was the highest-paid model in 2017 to walk in this year's show. She was the fourth highest-earning model in the world overall, thanks in part to lucrative contracts with Sportmax and Marc Jacobs fragrance.

The 36-year-old has 11.3 million followers on her Instagram account @adrianalima.

Wolf of Wall Street Tribeca Mansion

  • Alan Wilzig is the inspiration for a character in "The Wolf of Wall Street."
  • He's been trying to sell his Tribeca townhouse for years.
  • The home recently had its price chopped by another $1 million.

Alan Wilzig, the real-life inspiration for a character in "The Wolf of Wall Street," is having a hard time getting rid of his New York City home.

Wilzig's Tribeca mansion has been on the market since 2014, when it listed for $44 million. It was later offered for $24.885 million and is now up for sale again for $18.75 million, down from $19.75 million in its fourth price chop.

Each time the townhouse gets relisted, its staging gets more and more tame. Many of its more eccentric features have disappeared and it's now more of a typical space in line with the surrounding area.

The 6,500-square-foot townhouse has a 2,200-square-foot roof deck, backyard, three bedrooms, and an attached multipurpose garage.

Wilzig inspired the character who introduced Leonardo DiCaprio's character to his future wife in a pool-party scene in the 2013 film.

Jane Powers of Douglas Elliman now has the listing.

Megan Willett and April Walloga contributed reporting to an earlier version of this article.

How to pick the perfect wines for the holiday season

$
0
0

drinking wine dinner

  • The holidays are stressful; wine shouldn't be.
  • Avoid Beaujolais Nouveau at all costs.
  • Embrace French wines.
  • If all else fails, buy Champagne.

A long time ago, I was a professional wine journalist. Later, cars stole my heart, but because I spent about five years deep in the wine world and wrote two books about the wine-loving life, I consider myself reasonably qualified to hand out advice.

When the holiday season rolls around, I routinely see otherwise sensible people flummoxed by booze. So many choices! So many events and parties! So many wildly different foods — sweet potatoes, an enormous bird that's only eaten in November and December — on the plate!

Relax. We can get through this. Here are some hacks.

SEE ALSO: Here's why the Rob Roy can be your go-to holiday cocktail

Champagne!

Around this time of year, I always get the question of what wines go with the Thanksgiving/Christmas feast staples: turkey, stuffing, potatoes, etc. Nothing is really ideal. Except ... Champagne!

Champagne goes with everything. And it's always good, as long as you stick to well-known houses, which strive for a consistently excellent product year after year ("vintage" Champagne is a different story).

My personal favorite label is Laurent-Perrier, but any of the big names is a good bet. You do, however, want to be careful about overdoing it with the bubbly.

Keep it simple.

We're back to the food-pairing conundrum here. You can make yourself nuts trying to wedge a good Pinot Noir in with the cranberry sauce and the giblet gravy.

Instead, choose plonk. An uncomplicated $10 wine that you drink all the time — reds are better — will make your life less complicated.

Spend a little bit more than usual.

Now let me immediately contradict my previous tip and suggest that you stretch the budget a bit.

This isn't really a holiday specific hack, more of a general rule. When I first took an interest in wine, there was some truly awful cheap stuff. But that's all changed and it's now hard to find a genuinely rotten wine from a major region (even some of the minor ones are bringing their quality way up).

But although the wine is all good, it's not particularly interesting or engaging. For that, you need to jump up from the $10-$20 level and get acquainted with wines that are pushing $50.

If you think of the holidays as a special occasion, then you have the perfect excuse. The best values at this price point are French, but Spain is also worth investigating. Italy is a mixed bag. California, unfortunately, demands that you get close to $75 for the same effect.

  • President Donald Trump has owned Mar-a-Lago since the 1980s.
  • The president visited the resort and hosted world leaders multiple times this year, earning it the nickname of the "Winter White House."
  • To join Mar-a-Lago, members must initially pay $200,000, plus $14,000 in annual fees.

Mar-a-Lago, President Donald Trump's Florida resort and club, has quickly become known as the "Winter White House." The Trumps are spending Thanksgiving at the resort, which Trump himself referred to as his "Southern White House" after spending several consecutive weekends there earlier this year.

Mar-a-Lago became the subject of an ethical debate after the president was photographed being briefed on North Korea's missile test while hosting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the resort in February. Democrats in Congress have called for Trump to release lists of the dignitaries he plans to host at the Palm Beach resort, as well as a complete list of paying members, in order to resolve potential conflicts of interest. The club has not yet done so.

According to The New York Times, the number of applications to join the club soared in the wake of Trump's election as president, and revenue has grown.

Shortly after the 2016 presidential election, the resort doubled its initial membership fee to $200,000, and members must also pay $14,000 in annual fees. Mar-a-Lago has 500 members who are welcome to enjoy the 20-acre club's beach, pool, spa, and dining options along with many of those in Trump's inner circle.

Earlier this year The Times and Politico published incomplete lists of Mar-a-Lago's members, many of whom are Wall Streeters, real estate moguls, energy executives, and Trump campaign donors. We've rounded up 15 of the most notable names among them.

On the Tiger Tour, vacationers can see both New Zealand's North and South Islands over the course of nine nights on Roberston's three properties: The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs, The Farm at Cape Kidnappers, and Matakauri Lodge.

This startup wants to bring the awkward family photo back to life

MINTED I Photo op 1

  • Online design marketplace Minted is launching a service where families can book professional photo sessions at the location of their choice.
  • Sessions start at $100 and last 30 minutes.
  • The service launched on November 22 and is available in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Family photos can be a pain, especially if they're taken in a professional studio. Portrait photography sessions are often time-consuming, expensive, and involve embarrassing, matching outfits.

Minted CEO Mariam Naficy hopes to change that. Naficy founded Minted in 2007 as a digital marketplace where users vote on designs submitted by independent artists, the most popular of which are sold on clothing, stationery, framed prints, and other home decor items.

Now, the website is launching an on-demand portrait photography service where users can schedule 30-minute sessions with photographers who have been vetted and trained by the company. Sessions start at $100, and users can have the photos taken in their homes or at a location of their choice. Within three days, customers are sent 10 retouched photos from the shoot and given the option to purchase holiday cards that feature the photos.

For Naficy, the idea came from the recognition that consumers want convenience, a quality that is not common in the portrait photography industry.

"A lot of people don't want to leave their homes, and they want both products and services to come to them. One of the hardest things to do, as a mom, is to get your kids to be willing to leave the house, get dressed up, and go somewhere for a long photo shoot," she told Business Insider.

MINTED I Photo op 4She added: "I thought of all the other parents struggling to get their kids bundled up and out the door for a picture and thought it would be way better if people could just stay in their pajamas if they wanted to and stay at home."

Naficy said she realized the service wouldn't work unless users could trust the photographers they would be letting into their homes, so she helped design an extensive vetting and training process where photographers are evaluated for their personal and technical skills.

But in order to expand the service to the level she desired, she would have to give photographers the opportunity to grow.

"One of the things we have to do as an organization is take emerging creatives and help them down their path of learning. In order to be able to develop a workforce at scale, you have to give people a chance," she said.

The service, which launched on November 22, is only available in New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles at the moment. For Naficy, the decision to debut the service in big cities was motivated by logistics.

"One of the reasons we went urban was just simply for density reasons ... It's much easier for us to have photographers traveling between locations if they're traveling within a denser area," she said.

The same applies to their clients, who are more likely to live near public spaces that would photograph well.

"It's a little bit easier for an urban family to perhaps just stay at home and go for a walk on their street to get a photo at the local park. I think there is a big convenience upgrade for the urban client," she said.

Naficy hopes she will soon be able to expand the service to other cities and suburbs. If the demand is sufficient, she might be able to make life a little easier for families, and make sure they'll never have their pictures taken in a department-store photo studio again.

This science-backed tip makes people eat less when they're stressed

This video was first published in 2016.

It has happened to all of us — you get home from an exhausting day of work and eat all the junk food you see around: pizza, beer and chips. Why does the body crave for that, instead of a salad? Here is the simple solution to keep stress eating away. Following is a transcript of the video.

Do your stressful days end like this? You're not alone. Researchers studied eating habits of 125 people. They were working in an information-tech firm in China.

For 3 weeks, participants recorded daily: Work demands and stress, eating habits at dinner, sleep quality.

The results point to a simple way to kick bad eating habits, get a better night's rest. People who had a stressful workday often: chose unhealthy food for dinner, ate more food for dinner.

But that all changed if they slept well the night before. When workers slept better they often ate better the next day, despite still being stressed.

Why the change? It could be that great sleep helps us deal with stress better. Stress attacks our self-control. So, stress makes it harder to stick with personal goals like eating healthy.

The next time you're tempted to eat the day away think about treating yourself to a good night's sleep instead.

8 celebrity homes that no one wants to buy

  • A celebrity owner isn't necessarily enough to sell a home.
  • Some celebrity-owned homes have sat on the market for years.
  • Michael Jordan, for example, has been trying to sell his Highland Park, Illinois mansion since 2012.

While an association with a celebrity seems like it would help a home sell more quickly, that doesn't seem to always be the case.

According to Redfin, homes owned by celebrities tend to spend 36 more days on the market than other homes, and they typically sell for less than what the seller had originally asked for.

It could be that these homes have price tags that only a celebrity-sized paycheck could cover — or, it could just be that the draw of a star power is not as strong as it would appear.

Either way, we've rounded up eight celebrity-owned homes that have languished on the market — some of them for several years at several different price points.

50 Cent's Connecticut mansion

50 Cent first listed his 50,000-square-foot home in Farmington, Connecticut, for $18.5 million in 2015. In the fall of that year, he lowered the price significantly, to $8.5 million, after he had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

He again lowered the price, this time to $5.995 million, in 2016, and the price has remained the same since.

The home is totally over the top, with "21 bedrooms, 25 bathrooms, an indoor pool and hot tub, a substantial night club, an indoor court, multiple game rooms, a green screen room, a recording studio," among many other opulent features, according to the Douglas Elliman listing.

Matt Lauer's Sag Harbor estate

Matt Lauer is having a hard time offloading his home in the Hamptons. Horiginally listed for $17.995 million in July 2016. He cut $1 million from the listing price in September 2016, and now it's asking $14.9 million.

The 8,000-square-foot home sits on top of a 25-acre private lot. The home was built in a stunning traditional style with plenty of space for entertaining guests and a backyard pool to lay out by.

Steve Cohen's mansion in the sky

Billionaire hedge funder Steve Cohen has been seeking a buyer for his Manhattan duplex penthouse since 2013.

It's had a number of different listing prices: $115 million, $98 million, $82 million, $79 million, $72 million, $67.5 million, and now, $57.5 million.

The 9,000-square-foot space has five bedrooms and six baths. Cohen is an avid art collector, and the home has a dedicated gallery to put his pieces on display.

  • The Trump Organization is cutting ties with Trump SoHo.
  • The upscale hotel has struggled to fill rooms and bring in guests following the election.
  • A restaurant in the hotel closed earlier this year after "the Kardashians stopped coming" post-election.

Trump SoHo — the Trump Organization-run, five-star Downtown Manhattan hotel — will no longer carry the Trump name or be affiliated with the family.

Trump hotel soho

On Wednesday, the Trump Organization reached a deal to allow the company to cut ties with the property, The New York Times reported.

According to The Times, the hotel has struggled to fill rooms and sell condominiums as President Donald Trump has risen in political prominence.

Koi, a restaurant located in the hotel, closed earlier this year after a reported drop in business following Trump's win in the 2016 election.

"Before Trump won we were doing great. There were a lot of people we had, our regulars, who'd go to the hotel but are not affiliated with Trump," Jonathan Grullon, a busser and host at the restaurant, told New York Magazine's GrubStreet. "And they were saying if he wins, we are not coming here anymore."

Another restaurant worker told GrubStreet that, following the election, "the Kardashians stopped coming" — and business plummeted. While Suzanne Chou, Koi Group's general counsel, "declined to speculate" why business declined, she said that "obviously since the election it's gone down."

A new restaurant called Spring & Varick recently opened in the space that formerly belonged to Koi.

Earlier this year, WNYC reported the five-star hotel was planning to lay off workers and reduce some of its services.

The hotel will continue to be owned by CIM, an investment firm in California. Now, however, the Trump Organization will no longer manage day-to-day operations or brand the hotel under the Trump name.

In  2010, the Major Economic Crimes Bureau of the Manhattan District Attorney's office opened an investigation into Ivanka and Donald Trump Jr. for reportedly misleading buyers in the Trump SoHo project. Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. dropped the case after receiving a donation from the Trump Organization's lawyer, Marc Kasowitz, as ProPublica reported in October.

This is how different types of alcohol alter your mood, according to science

  • A new study has analysed the relationship between different types of alcohol and emotion.
  • The study found that red wine and beer make people feel relaxed, while spirits make people feel sexy and energetic.
  • It also found that women, on the whole, had a more significant emotional response to alcohol than men — except when it came to aggression.

A new study has analysed how different types of alcohol cause different emotional responses in both men and women.

The study by BMJ Open questioned almost 30,000 people from 21 countries across the world. Each respondent drank different types of wine, spirits, and beer on different occasions and catalogued how the different types of alcohol affected their mood and emotions.

This is how each type of alcohol alters your mood, according to the study.

Red wine and beer may make you more relaxed...

Respondents were most likely to report feeling relaxed (52.8%) when drinking red wine; although almost half of respondents also reported feeling relaxed when drinking beer.

...But red wine is also most likely to make you feel lethargic

Red wine was voted the most likely type of alcohol to make a person tired or lethargic, with 60% of respondents reporting sleepiness after a few glasses.

Spirits can give you energy and confidence...

Over half of respondents across all countries associated drinking spirits with emotions of energy and confidence, with young people being the most susceptible to these emotions after a few shots.

...And make you feel "sexy"...

More than 40% of people said they felt "sexy" after drinking spirits. Differences in emotions varied between countries, with the highest association with feeling energised, relaxed, and sexy being the South American sample from Colombia and Brazil.

...But they also might make you aggressive, restless, tearful, and nauseous

One third of people said that drinking spirits made them feel angry, or susceptible to aggressive urges. While women tended to experience stronger emotional responses to the different types of alcohol, men were more likely to feel aggressive after drinking than women — particularly men that drank heavily.

While the study demonstrates an association between the feelings and the drinks, it does not explain the reason for these emotional changes.

One of the researchers behind the study, Professor Mark Bellis, said: "People may rely on alcohol to help them feel a certain way. People might drink to feel more confident or relaxed but they also risk other negative emotional responses too."
