What a legal drug that kills more Americans than heroin does to your body and brain

oxycodone

Despite being legal with a doctor's prescription, opioid painkillers can come with serious health risks.

The drugs belong to a larger class of drugs known as opioids, which includes legal, lab-produced drugs like oxycodone, fentanyl, and morphine as well as illegal drugs like heroin.

Since they slow breathing and act on the same brain systems as heroin, opioid painkillers carry serious risks, from overdose to, in rarer cases, addiction.

Read on to learn more:

DON'T MISS: The answer to treating drug and alcohol addiction may be far simpler than you think

Opioid painkillers capitalize on our body's natural pain-relief system.

We all have a series of naturally produced keys ("ligands") and keyholes ("receptors") that fit together to switch on our brain's natural reward system— it's the reason we feel good when we eat a good meal or have sex, for example.

But opioids mimic the natural keys in our brain — yes, we all have natural opioids! When they click in, we can feel an overwhelming sense of euphoria.

Opioid painkillers can have effects similar to heroin and morphine, especially when taken in ways other than prescribed by a doctor.

When prescription painkillers act on our brain's pleasure and reward centers, they can make us feel good. More importantly, though, they can work to reinforce behavior, which in some people can trigger a repeated desire to use.

You may also feel sleepy.

Opioids act on multiple brain regions, but when they go to work in the locus ceruleus, a brain region involved in alertness, they can make us sleepy. Why? The drugs essentially put the brakes on the production of a chemical called norepinephrine, which plays a role in arousal.

How to avoid the underarm issue a surprising number of men suffer from

0

underarm

Guys, do your underarms ever get itchy? Well, it turns out that might be a more serious thing than you think.

"It's a skin fold, meaning there's two opposing skin surfaces that are often in conjunction, so it's an area that is prone to friction," Dr. Terrence Keaney, a dermatologist who works with Dove Men+Care, told Business Insider.

Adding to that, the area also has a high concentration of sweat glands and hair.

All of those factors together can lead to irritation. Keaney recently told GQ that around 54% of men suffer from underarm irritation.

The easiest way to avoid that is to use the right deodorant. Keaney recommends men use an anti-perspirant, which can reduce irritation by eliminating some of the sweat that the area has to endure. Make sure you apply it correctly for maximum effectiveness.

He also recommends you choose an anti-perspirant with moisturizing properties like sunflower oil or vitamin E.

One thing you shouldn't do: shave your armpit. Though you may think getting rid of your underarm hair will reduce sweat and therefore friction, you must be careful — it might actually hurt more than it can help. Keaney recommends men trim instead of shave their underarm hair.

This might be the most controversial graduation speech of all time

0
0

6345227439_c04e1254a0_b

These days, even commencement speakers aren't safe from criticism aimed at their political or personal beliefs.

Students at Scripps College, for example, are protesting their school's choice of Madeline Albright and calling her a "war criminal," likely due to her involvement in NATO's bombing of Yugoslavia while she was Secretary of State.

But the outcry over Albright's impending speech, which she will give on May 14, doesn't come close to the controversy that erupted when Evergreen State College invited convicted cop-killer Mumia Abu-Jamal to speak at its 1999 graduation.

Abu-Jamal was on death row at the time of the graduation, so Evergreen played a 13-minute tape-recorded speech for the audience.

That decision spurred vehement outcry from many students, police officers, and public officials. Roughly 800 students walked out from the speech. Former Washington governor Gary Locke canceled his scheduled appearance.

Police officerAnd former House Majority Whip Tom Delay even asked for a minute of silence on the floor of the House of Representatives to protest the decision.

For its part, Evergreen said it asked Abu-Jamal to speak ''to galvanize an international conversation about the death penalty, the disproportionate number of blacks on death row, the relationship between poverty and the criminal justice system,'' according to the New York Times in 1999.

Abu-Jamal, a former radio reporter who's black, was convicted in 1982 of murdering white Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner after he pulled over Abu-Jamal's brother. He has a large number of supporters who claim he was framed for the murder, and, after a review of the case, Amnesty International found it did not meet international fair trial standards.

The speech that generated so much controversy centered on living a deliberate life and embracing the revolutionary struggle:

This system's greatest fear has been that folks like you, young people, people who have begun to critically examine the world around them, some perhaps for the first time, people who have yet to have the spark of life snuffed out, will do just that: learn from those lives, be inspired, and then live lives of opposition to the deadening status quo.

Maureen FaulknerAbu-Jamal urged listeners to remember the revolutionaries who fought racial and social injustice that came before them:

They chose the hard road of revolution, yet they chose. And but for that choice just like each of you seated here tonight, people who saw the evils of the system and resolved to fight it. Period.

Abu-Jamal has maintained his innocence, but the Supreme Court in Philadelphia upheld his conviction twice. He was sentenced to death, but in late 2011 prosecutors agreed to stop pursuing the death penalty and to take him off of death row.

He's serving a life sentence without the possibility of parole but continues to cause controversy behind bars.

Abu-Jamal also gave a commencement speech at Goddard College in Vermont in 2014 that spurred fresh outrage from opponents of the decision. Again, the speech was pre-recorded from jail.

You can listen to the entirety of Mumia Abu-Jamal’s 1999 speech at Evergreen here:

Academy for Information Technology NJ

The difference between a good and a bad teacher can make or break a class — especially for high-school students in the midst of preparing for college.

As part of their annual public-school rankingsNiche, a company that researches and compiles information on schools, found the places across the country that boast the highest-caliber public-school teachers.

To compile their rankings, Niche examined over 100,000 schools based on 27 million reviews from more than 300,000 students and parents. Many are charter or magnet schools, meaning they pull in qualified students from around their districts. You can read more about the methodology here.

Each of these schools received an "A+" ranking for their teachers — their numerical Niche scores are also listed below. Many of the schools boast a deep roster of these teachers, too, with student-to-teacher ratios below the national average of 16:1.

How to make the creamiest bacon mac and cheese ever

0
0

This is the creamiest, most delicious bacon mac & cheese that you've ever made, all without turning on your oven. Our secret ingredient is the ever-controversial American cheese, but just trust us — it melts like a dream!

Stovetop Bacon Mac & Cheese

Serves: 5-6 people

Total Prep & Cooking Time: 1 hour

Ingredients:

8 slices bacon, chopped

1 onion, finely minced

6 cloves garlic, finely minced

3/4 pound small pasta shells

4 tablespoons unsalted butter

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups whole milk

3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese

1/2 cup American cheese

1 teaspoon kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon ground mustard

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper

1/2 cup scallions, thinly sliced, plus more for garnish

1. First, bring a pot of salted water to a boil and cook your paste according to package directions. Drain and toss with a little olive oil to keep from sticking. Set aside, but reserve a bit of the bacon for garnish later.

2. In a heavy-bottomed pot, cook your chopped bacon over medium-high heat until crisp, about 8 minutes. Remove the bacon to a paper towel-lined plate and set aside. Drain all but 2 tablespoons of bacon fat from the pan, and add in your minced onion. Cook for 8 minutes or so over medium heat, until translucent. Add in your minced garlic and stir for 1 minute, until fragrant. Place on the same plate as the bacon.

3. In the same pot, reduce the heat to medium-low. Add in your butter and flour, and whisk until smooth, being careful not to let the mixture brown. Turn the heat up to medium, add in 1/2 cup of milk at a time, whisking until slightly thickened before adding in the next 1/2 cup. Bring to a simmer, then add in the cheddar cheese. Whisk until smooth, then add in the American cheese and use a wooden spoon to mix until smooth. Add in your salt and spices and stir to combine.

4. Add in your pasta shells, crisped bacon, scallions, and cooked onions and garlic. Stir to combine, taste, and adjust seasonings as needed. Garnish with extra scallions, bacon, and cracked black pepper. This will keep well, covered and refrigerated, for up to 3 days.

Billionaire VC Tim Draper wants 9 months and $40,000 to turn you into the next Steve Jobs, starting with military survival training

0
0

Tim Draper

If you are between 18 and 28, famous billionaire venture capitalist Tim Draper has a plan to turn you into the "next Steve Jobs."

That's why he launched a school for young, would-be entrepreneurs called Draper University of Heroes, he tells Business Insider, which he turned into a reality TV show last year.

The show, "Startup U," failed to attract an audience, was dropped from prime time, and there's no word yet if ABC will renew it or not.

But even if students won't appear on TV, Draper has a new plan for the school. He just added a new nine-month program to the curriculum, starting in the fall, which he views as an alternative to a master's degree.

This is in addition to the school's classic two months of "hero training" offered since it launched three years ago.

There's a reason he calls it hero training. Before you can become the next Steve Jobs, you have to learn to be tough. Navy SEAL tough.

Days of survival training

Hero training includes "four days of survival training with military teams. We have Navy SEAL special forces and Army Rangers that take them to real survival training," Draper says.

survival training jungleOnce students have spent those days foraging for food and shelter in the wilderness, the next step is city survival training, challenges that sound like what Donald Trump gave to contestants on his reality show, "The Apprentice."

"There's another couple of days in the two months of hero training that's Urban Survival training," Draper says. Students have to go out and "sell something embarrassing, or go to San Francisco and come back with a job offer, on paper, in 24 hours."

That job offer gives them the confidence that they can always quickly get a position, he says.

As Draper says, "How to create a Steve Jobs? It's a way of thinking." The school admits people "that have that spark and we create an environment that ignites that spark."

$12,000 to $40,000

Once the students have learned how to survive, they are ready to learn about the tech industry — Draper U-style. The nine-month program will include learning about the newest, buzziest technologies.

Tim Draper Startup UAlthough every class has a different curriculum, Draper says, students might explore Bitcoin — which Draper loves — learn design, and use the newest programming languages to build an app, or maybe a robot.

They'll also draft a business plan, turn that plan into a pitch deck, and turn the pitch deck into a two-minute presentation and pitch it to "between 30 and 50 VCs," including himself, he says.

He's dedicated a $1 million fund to invest seed money in startup ideas from the class, too, he says.

But it's not a scholarship program. The two-month hero training costs $12,000. The full nine-month program costs $40,000, Draper tells us.

Draper calls it an alternative to traditional school. That's important: This is not an accredited school. Students who finish the program do not earn an accredited degree.

Just to compare, many accredited universities charge about $40,000 to earn a bona fide master's degree.

Draper defends his school

Draper U has been controversial in its three years. While some students have posted glowing reviews of it on Yelp, some have given it bad reviews.

Draper says, "We definitely get mixed reviews. Our training is not for everybody."

And The Verge's Russell Brandom once called the school a BA in BS.

But Draper points to the alumni success stories as proof of the school's value. Draper U has had over 500 alumni from 53 countries who have created 200 startups and landed a total of $22 million in funding, he says.

He points to businesses like biomedical startup nVision and conference-tech firm Loopd as examples of alumni startups that got funding.

Not that Draper is worried about controversy.

He has come up with a plan to turn California into six statesoffered to make a large charitable donation if people watched his reality TV show, and bought a huge stash of Bitcoin auctioned by the government after seizing black-market site Silk Road and is fond of making large public bets.

The 25 best fast-food chains in America

best fast food places in america updated

Fast food took root in the US the 1950s and has flourished into a $255 billion industry. These restaurants — globally associated with American culture — evoke surprising passion, with many developing a cult-like loyalty from customers. But which chain is the best?

Business Insider teamed up with Restaurant Business, a food-service industry expert and media outlet, to compile a definitive ranking of the best fast-food restaurants in America. Using proprietary data collected by Restaurant Business and its sister research firm Technomic, we looked at nearly 100 of the largest US chains and rated them on three criteria that we considered the most telling for all-around fast-food excellence: financial performance, customer satisfaction, and overall value. Our calculations accounted for sales growth, average sales at each location, consumer-sentiment ratings, and the average cost of a meal, among other metrics. Read more about the methodology here.

Towering sales figures alone weren't enough to make the cut, as a number of fast-food heavyweights — such as McDonald's and Taco Bell — didn't crack the top 25 in our ranking. Rather, customers tend to gravitate toward more specialized and regional brands that offer a higher-quality experience, including fresh, sustainable ingredients, at an affordable price, according to Restaurant Business.

Keep reading to see the 25 best fast-food chains in America in 2016.

Headquarters: Lakewood, Colorado

US sales: $745 million

Number of US locations: 670

Financial performance rank: 18

Customer satisfaction rank: 40

Value rank: 73

Qdoba grew sales by 9% in 2015, but it can’t seem to shake constant comparisons to Chipotle, which had nearly the same rate of growth last year. The origins of the burrito behemoths are actually quite similar: Qdoba was founded in 1995 in Colorado, two years after and four miles north of the first location of its now faltering competitor.

But in an effort to distinguish itself, Qdoba announced last October that it would redesign locations and ramp up its menu — which offers tacos, salads, burritos, and quesadillas — based on a new version of its ideal customer, a woman named Quentessa, who’s “naturally magnetic” and leads “a story-filled life.”

24. Ben & Jerry's

Headquarters: South Burlington, Vermont

US sales: $78 million

Number of US locations: 235

Financial performance rank: 89

Customer satisfaction rank: 4

Value rank: 1

After taking a $5 ice-cream-making course at Penn State, best friends Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield purchased an old gas station and turned it into a scoop shop. Ben & Jerry’s is now known for inventive ice-cream flavors like Cherry Garcia, Phish Food, and Americone Dream.

Almost 40 years in the business, the ice-cream veterans keep finding new ways to bring its most loved products to customers. In May 2016, the company announced it would start “flipping” three of its classic flavors. For instance, the flavor Half Baked has been changed to Totally Baked — instead of brownies in chocolate ice cream and cookie dough in vanilla, the ice-cream-and-baked-good combos will be swapped.

23. Fuddruckers

Headquarters: Houston, Texas

US sales: $253 million

Number of US locations:173

Financial performance rank: 77

Customer satisfaction rank: 8

Value rank: 25

Since its inception, Fuddruckers has aimed to create the “World’s Greatest Hamburgers.” It prides itself on its never-frozen patties, baked-from-scratch buns, and DIY topping bar, ensuring customers get exactly what they want.

Despite slipping US sales — down 1.2% last year — Fuddruckers has accrued a host of loyal customers who flock to the chain for its juicy hamburgers and crisp sesame buns, earning the restaurant a top-notch customer satisfaction rating on Technomic.

Ask the Insider columnist Ashley Lutz answers all of your work-related questions, including the awkward, sensitive, and real-world ones. Have a question? Email asktheinsider@businessinsider.com.

Dear Insider,

I work for a bank and just got promoted (yay!). The bad part? In the past month my manager has been removed from my team. Additionally, my boss and my boss' boss have both moved to different departments and I'm responsible for 15 people. The person who has been brought in to oversee our department doesn't know anything about our projects.

Once all the bosses left, three other experienced people served their notice period too. They have been replaced by a bunch of inexperienced people.

My boss and I used to divide the responsibilities of monitoring the team because it's impossible to oversee 15 people at once. Now I am basically responsible for the entire team, and many of them are inexperienced and need training.

I have become completely overwhelmed and don't know what to do.

Sincerely,

Last Man Standing At My Job

***

Dear Last Man Standing:

I have good news for you: Even though you're overwhelmed right now, this is actually an amazing opportunity to advance in your career. Thanks to the recent departures, you're now the most experienced person in your department. Your company should value your loyalty and experience more than ever.

I see three major opportunities for you here: 1. You can make yourself invaluable to your new boss by showing her or him the ropes, 2. You can establish authority on the existing team, and 3. You can show off your chops by training the new and inexperienced people.

You definitely have ammunition to ask for another raise. It's clear you have more responsibilities, and if your company wants to keep you, they're going to have to make it worth your time.

The first thing you need to do is identify the next most-experienced person on the team whom you trust to act as your deputy. Explain the opportunity for advancement and delegate tasks to him or her. This will help free up your day for getting your boss up to speed.

Explain to the team that while you're busy training the boss, they need to look to the coworker you've appointed by support. Of course, you'll still be there for the big questions, but this will free up your day for training.

Focus on getting your manager up to speed and on training the three new people. Once you have accomplished this, you can divide responsibilities the way you did before.

Don't put too much pressure on yourself to accomplish this in record time. Remind yourself that you're doing the best you can. Your company is now relying on you, and it will likely cut you some slack given the situation.

Also invest in some self-care to set yourself up for long-term success. This is what I refer to as "whatever it takes" mode. Instead of making coffee at home, treat yourself to Starbucks. If you would normally spend Saturday cleaning, hire someone to do the work and do something fun instead.

Every guy should make this one change to get their skin ready for summer

sunscreen

Two issues pop up for guys more often in the summer than in any other season: sweating and sun damage.

According to Dr. Terrence Keaney, a dermatologist working with Dove Men+Care, sweat is primarily a problem for men in the summer months because they perspire nearly twice as much as women do.

And that's not just under the arms —which can be handled with an anti-perspirant deodorant— but everywhere, including the face.

This leads to the other issue: the sun's dreadful and damaging rays. Sun is primarily an issue from a dermatological point of view because men are less likely to use sunscreen, but have twice the rate of skin cancer.

"It's a big issue for men to protect themselves from sunlight," Keaney said.

If you sweat excessively, that can interfere with sunscreen and cause it to be less effective, eliminating the benefits of wearing it in the first place.

There is an easy way to combat both of these issues, however. A combination lightweight sunscreen and moisturizer can help prevent excess moisture on the face, ensuring your face is still protected throughout the day. This also helps you avoiding feeling like you have too much stuff on your face, which Keaney says is one of the top reasons men don't wear sunscreen.

Some options for this style of product include Harry's Daily Face Lotion ($7) and Clinique For Men Broad Spectrum Moisturizer ($26).

Another option is to use an oil control moisturizer, paired with a lightweight sunscreen separately, which would be even more effective in ensuring that sweat doesn't get in the way.
