The right way to wear a skinny tie

0
0

There's no special trick to wearing a skinny tie. Overall, your tie should match the rest of your clothes, and not stand out too much.

To help you get it right, we enlisted East Dane's accessories buyer, John Wong. He has 3 fail-safe tips you need to know, which we have interspersed with skinny tie-and-shirt combinations for you to shop, below.

1. Think about how your tie fits in with the rest of your clothes
"When deciding on when to wear a skinny tie, it’s important to look at the suit and shirt that you’ll be wearing it with," Wong told us. More specifically, he says skinny ties should be worn with slim-cut suits that have narrow lapels and dress shirts that also have slim collars. "The scale of the tie should match the rest of the suit and shirt." Since skinny ties also often more casual than wider widths, it's okay to pair them with non-dress shirts, like J.Crew's cloth oxford.

2. Think about how your tie fits your body type
"Recognize the type of suit that is flattering on you," Wong says. "A great example is if you look at Adam Scott on Parks and Recreation, who pairs a skinny tie with his slim suits and classic oxford shirts that are perfectly tailored to his thinner frame. If Chris Pratt wore the same style, his height and build would overwhelm the suit and tie."

3. Think about how your tie fits where you're going to be wearing it
"A skinny tie is usually seen as more relaxed or more fashion forward. In this vein, you should always consider where you will be wearing it," Wong recommends. "You’re probably safe to wear a skinny tie if you work in a more creative or relaxed environment, such as an advertising or architecture firm, as opposed to a more traditional environment, such as an investment bank or law office." Summer weddings and alfresco dinner dates are also acceptable occasions to wear one.

35 wine tasting terms and what they actually mean

0
0

wineThere's a lot of ego in wine speak, both on the part of eager oenophiles who want to assert their expertise and occasional wine drinkers who keep mum for fear of saying the wrong thing.

For those who identify with the latter, this glossary of wine tasting terms will get your vocabulary off to a roaring start. The list is a group effort by some of our favorite sommeliers and winemakers, all of whom are photographed below, plus Business Insider's own Matthew DeBord, author of "Wine Country USA."

Acidic

Pertains to the acid level in both red and white wines. It’s the sensation you get after sucking on a lemon, when your mouth gushes with saliva. Sometimes it can have a negative connotation — underripe, astringent, tart — but without acid, wine would be flabby and unstructured. Acid is the balancing agent to sugar and fruit. —Christine Wright, wine director

Jessica Brown

Angular

When a wine feels almost sharp in your mouth, with lots of acid and structure. It's the opposite of "velvety" or "flabby." Jessica Brown, wine director

Barnyard

Smells literally of a barnyard — manure, wet hay, game, fur, leather — but in a good way!—J.B.

Body

You want a well-balanced body, right? The same goes for wine, in terms of its weight and fullness on your palateWine can be light, medium, or full-bodied. —Charles Smith, winemaker

Brett(y)

Short for "brettanomyce" (a type of yeast) and a variant of "barnyard." Refers to wines that smell like sweat and manure. —Alexander LaPratt, sommelier

Chewy

Has to do with a wine's density and texture, almost like you can sink your teeth into it. —C.S.

Corked

Signifies a type of flaw that can come from a cork, but also from other places. It makes a wine smell like funky wet cardboard and tends to kill the fresh fruit flavors. —Matthew DeBord

Cut

Often used to characterize German Rieslings, a wine with a "good cut" is sharply defined in terms of acidity. —M.D.

alexander lapratt

Dry

Simply means the absence of sugar, not absence of flavor. You can have a full-flavored, fruity wine that's also dry. —C.S.

Earthy

Gives a sense of place and origin — where the grape was grown, the type of soil. It can almost give you a wine's backstory. —C.S.

Fat

Means a wine is high in alcohol with no acidity. A fat wine isn't refreshing. —A.L.

Finish

How long you can taste the wine in your mouth after you swallow. —J.B.

Flabby

When a wine lacks structure, tannins, and acid. —C.S.

Fresh

When a wine (white or red) is lively and refreshing. We use this term for more youthful wines. —C.S.

Charles Smith

Fruit-forward

Fruitiness in a wine doesn’t have much to do with sweetness. Sweetness is the end balance between sugar and acid; you can’t smell sugar. Fruitiness is the presence of fruit notes both on the nose and on the palate. —C.W.

Fur tongue

Refers to a cat's tongue; used to describe a wine that has high tannins. —A.L.

Grainy

A fine yet gauzy texture resembling, in a sense, projected 16 or 35 mm film. Generally denotes Old World, old-school, or old wines. —Scott Baker, wine director

Hyena

A wine that's all upfront with no backend. —A.L.

Hot

Wine with a noticeably high alcohol content. —S.B

Scott Baker

Jammy

A sense of really ripe, baked fruit. —A.L.

Jet fuel

Wine that is high in alcohol and/or out of balance. —A.L.

Juicy

The presence of fruit flavors plus acid to brighten them. —J.B.

Laser-like

Often used when talking about acid in a wine that is precise, focused, and cuts through everything like a laser beam.—J.B.

Lively

A wine that engages your palate and piques your curiosity. In other words, it has lots of action. Whether it's sparkling wine, Champagne, or Riesling, it has energy. —C.S.

Meaty

Simply means the wine has a lot of texture and density. You could liken it to the meaty quality of wild mushrooms. —C.S.

Christine Wright

Mineral

Smells and tastes of rocks, wet stones, ocean water, and saline. Really, it's like you are licking a rock.—J.B.

One-note

Simple wine that only showcases one flavor profile (i.e., green apple flavor and nothing else). —A.L.

Reductive

Denotes a wine that was kept air-tight during fermentation. Reductive wines often have a sulfur smell. This can be something the winemaker wanted intentionally in the wine or something that disappears after the wine breathes a bit.—J.B.

Rainwater

Diluted, watered down wine with no personality. —A.L.

Slutty

Denotes a lot of new oak influence. —A.L.

Smooth

Used a lot to describe red wine and usually translates to a wine with lower tannin levels. —C.W.

Spicy

Usually has to do with notes of pepper, spice, or ginger on the nose and palate. Grenache and syrah are both known to have pepper notes, so often people will think of these wines as “spicy.” —C.W.

Tannins

Present in red wines due to skin contact and oak aging. Tannins can dry out your mouth with a sort of astringency (think black tea that has been steeped for too long). They usually soften over time, but some grapes have a naturally lower tannin level. —C.W.

Tight

Describes a wine that's not expressing as much flavor or perfume as it should, usually because it's still young. It needs to "open up" more to unwind and become more expressive.—J.B.

Volatile Acidity (VA)

Evokes aromas and flavors found in nail polish remover. VA is prevalent in Italian red wines. —A.L.

Velvety (also: lush, smooth, silky)

When a wine has very soft tannins and, usually, a good amount of oak. Velvety wines feel soft and rich on your palate.—J.B.

Wooly

Smells like lamb's wool or an old sweater. Usually used to describe chenin blanc. —S.B.

Delightfully funny candids of a Long Island family in the '70s will take you right back in time

Meryl Meisler 7

Some photographers think they have to travel to the ends of the world to get the most interesting and unique images.

Meryl Meisler, however, did the opposite. In the 1970s, she decided to take photos of her charismatic family at home, in their neighborhood on Long Island.

“I documented celebrations and daily life with close extended family, neighbors, friends, and friends of friends, portraying special relationships between the subjects, the joys and activities of everyday life,” Meisler told Business Insider.

In her new book, "Purgatory & Paradise: SASSY 70s Suburbia And the City," Meisler's Long Island photos are juxtaposed with images of '70s street- and nightlife in New York City. The result is an unusual but strangely dynamic combination that flows cohesively as a singular narrative.

Keep scrolling to see a selection of images from the Long Island series, along with excerpts from our interview with Meisler.

Born in the South Bronx, Meisler moved to Long Island in 1954 at age two. She was around seven the first time she held a camera, but it wasn’t until graduate school that she set out to create her first body of work. “In the 1970s, I pretty much carried my camera with me everywhere,” she said.

Meisler photographed a local motorcycle gang in Madison during her first semester of grad school at the University of Wisconsin. Over Thanksgiving break back home, she shot movie theaters in Times Square. It wasn't until winter that she finally started her Long Island series, which would remain her complete focus from then on. Meisler had a clear vision from the start: "I wanted to photograph where I was coming from, emphasizing the elements of play and love."

Jacque Henri Lartigue, who photographed his aristocratic French family at play in the early 20th century, was a big inspiration for Meisler's images of family and friends. "I loved their costumes, attire, antics and obvious love of fun, life and each other," she said.

These headphones are great for exercising outdoors because they won't drown out important noises

0

Aftershokz Bluez 2With a pair of bone-conduction headphones, you don’t need your ear canals to listen to music.

Instead of transmitting sound in waves that float through the air and into your ears, bone conduction gets noise to your cochlea — that’s the auditory part of the inner ear — just by vibrating the bones in your skull.
ZInstead of jamming them inside the ear itself, exposing yourself to potentially harmful decibel levels, you place bone conduction headphones towards the top of your cheekbones. It sounds weird, but this allows you to enjoy music while keeping your ears free and alert to any noise that may occur around you.

In this vein, the Aftershokz Bluez 2 headphones are great for outdoor runners and cyclists who’d like to move through their neighborhood without constantly being in fear of a stray truck careening off the road beside them. The lightweight headset works wirelessly through Bluetooth and fits comfortably around your head, even for extended workout sessions.

Getting used to the bone conduction format may take some time — especially during loud tracks with deep bass, where the sound itself tends to leak and get muddied — and you’ll have a hard time hearing things with the Bluez 2 in particularly noisy environments.

If the idea of taking a phone call while listening to music interests you, though, the Bluez 2 are among the better options on the market. Originally retailing for $100, you can grab them from Touch of Modern for a more manageable $60 or $70 through July 25.

Aftershokz Bluez 2 Bone Conduction Headphones in Neon, $69.99 (originally $99.95), available at Touch of Modern.

Aftershokz Bluez 2 Bone Conduction Headphones in Black, $59.99 (originally $99.95), available at Touch of Modern.

You can also purchase the headphones on Amazon.

Science confirms dad bods are real

0
0

150430_dx_jonhammdadbod.CROP.promovar mediumlarge.jpg

The dad bod, the viral body type characterized by a not-so-flawless physique, just got more real thanks to science.

Men with a dad bod have a "nice balance between a beer gut and working out," as defined by Clemson University student Mackenzie Pearson, who first brought the term to the Internet’s attention back in March.

And, as it turns out, many men do put on a few pounds after their children are born, which likely contributes to this fit-but-flabby body type.

In the first study of this size, researchers at Northwestern Medicine kept track of the height and weight of about 10,000 men for 20 years, starting in 1994 when they were between 12 and 21 years old. By 2008, a third of them had become dads.

Those who became fathers for the first time gained anywhere from 3.5 to 4.5 pounds over that two-decade period, regardless of whether or not they lived with their kids.

The average 6-foot-tall father who lived with his kids gained about 4.4 pounds, while the average 6-foot-tall father who didn’t live with his kids still gained about 3.3 pounds. In contrast, men of the same height who did not have kids actually lost weight — 1.4 pounds, to be exact — over that same time.

Numerous otherstudies have connected weightgain to fatherhood, but this is the first of its kind to look at BMI, which can be an indicator of one's proportion of body fat and point to potential health problems. The researchers found that the BMI for dads living with their kids increased by 2.6%, while the BMI of dads who lived elsewhere increased by 2%. The higher the BMI, the more the men are at risk for diseases like diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

Not great news for the little tot or the spouse.

The researchers only collected numbers — they didn’t try to explain their findings. But they mention some potential guesses, like dads who nosh on their kids' leftovers or put off exercise in favor of spending more time with kids.

Guy who just won French Scrabble tournament doesn't speak a word of French

Nigel Richards, a 48-year-old New Zealander who was crowned the champion of francophone Scrabble, doesn't speak a word of French

Brussels (AFP) - Think you need to speak the language to win a top Scrabble match?

Think again.

Nigel Richards, a 48-year-old New Zealander who was crowned the champion of francophone Scrabble on Monday, doesn't speak a word of French.

Bushy-bearded, bespectacled Richards is already a celebrity in the English version of Scrabble, winning its world championship in 2007 and again in 2011.

But this is the first time in history that a player who cannot speak the language of Moliere has won the francophone world championship, which was contested by 74 players in Belgium Monday.

"AMAZING!" the French Scrabble Federation tweeted -- in English. "Nigel, I love you," it added.

Federation spokesman Antoine Rousseau said Richards had had just nine weeks to prepare for the competition.

He did so by memorising all of the possible words in the official Scrabble dictionary, from two to 10 letters.

In a three-hour final match, Richards won against Gabonese player Schelick Ilagou Rekawe with a word played on two  'triple-word score' boxes -- the most coveted in the game.

The federation told AFP that unlike some other players, Richards has a great eye for planning his moves and doesn't need to shuffle around letters when forming a word.

The New Zealander, a resident of Malaysia, will participate in more Scrabble competitions in Belgium this week, but with the added challenge of playing a format where all players start with the same letters.

After his win on Monday, Richards received a warm round of applause... but then needed a translator to thank the audience.

The best computer-science and engineering schools in the US are hotspots for elite companies like Google, Apple, Raytheon, Facebook, and Lockheed Martin to recruit new talent.

We surveyed over 400 Business Insider readers to find out which engineering schools have the most valuable undergraduate programs.

Survey participants rated the schools on a scale from 1 (not valuable) to 5 (extremely valuable).

To rank the schools, we took the percentage of people who assessed each school at a 4 or 5 and averaged that with the average SAT scores (from college admissions website CollegeBoard) for the students at each school.

Once again, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology came in first as the best school for engineering and computer-science undergrads. Read on to see which schools made the list.

Cooking a full meal at home is nice in theory, but it doesn’t happen as often as you'd like during the workweek.

If you have a hectic office life, you probably order dinner on Seamless or GrubHub four or five nights a week — a couple of clicks and a credit card charge later your order is on its way.

The online-food-ordering trap is real. And it is convenient.

img81oBut, still, there’s something to be said for home-cooked meals. There is more peace of mind when you control the ingredients — knowing exactly how much butter was or was not used to prepare your dish is always a plus — and portion size.

If you're short on time the Philips Multi-Cooker will help save you money and get you cooking more meals at home. You can use the countertop machine to prepare an endless variety of meals without much effort beyond putting your ingredients in the pot and setting its timer.

The Multi-Cooker has 10 preset programs that can slow cook stews, braises, risottos, and curries. It can also steam vegetables or rice, boil pasta, bake cakes or breads, and make fresh yogurt. When cooking is done, the machine switches to a keep-warm mode for up to 12 hours, so your food is ready for whenever you want to eat. Its nonstick interior makes the cleanup after quick and easy.

Right now, you can buy the Multi-Cooker at Williams-Sonoma for 50% off the sticker price of $300. The $150 you will spend on it is about what you spend on a week and a half's worth of Seamless orders.

Dallas is trying to become the hot new destination for gay couples

0

Gay pride dallas

Dallas, Texas, has the 6th-largest LGBT population in the US, and has been called one of the most gay-friendly cities in the US.

Since the US Supreme Court ruling that approved same sex marriage, Dallas is now trying to bill itself as the hot new destination for gay couples.

"The gay market is a natural market for Dallas, which comes as a surprise to many," said Phillip Jones, the president & CEO of the Dallas visitor's bureau. "People have this perception of Dallas, and of Texas, as being this politically conservative place, but we have a female lesbian Hispanic sheriff."

Jones emphasized how Dallas has a large and well-established gay community, and nationally-recognized gay neighborhoods like Oak Lawn, as well as the Bishop Arts District gayborhood, both full of bustling hotspots like the Round-Up Saloon, JR’s Bar & Grill and Station 4. The city is also home to the Cathedral of Hope, which is the world's largest gay and lesbian church with 30,000 national members.

Dallas issued its first same-sex marriage license mere hours after the SCOTUS decision was announced — and the tourism board is jumping on board to bring in gay couples looking for destination weddings.

LGBT magazine The Dallas Voice has put together the first annual Wedding Party & EXPO in conjunction with the North Texas GLBT Chamber, which will take place on August 2nd, and will feature more than 60 exhibitors, including venues, photographers, caterers, and florists, as well as a formal wear fashion show. While same-sex marriage in Texas is obviously still new, according to Engayged Weddings popular venues already include the scenic Towering Oaks Haven and Castle on the Lake.

So far, the Dallas CVB's efforts include targeted outreach through social media, a dedicated microsite, and even a LGBT visitor's guide for which they partnered with the local North Texas GLBT Chamber. They've been reaching out to the Cathedral of Hope as well as other local churches to make sure they have the infrastructure in place to accommodate the many same-sex weddings Dallas will hopefully be hosting in the future.

"If you happen to be gay and want to get married, why not in Dallas?" Jones said. "It's great for gay couples to say ‘hey, I got married in Texas!’"

A wild parenting debate is raging after a restaurant owner screamed at a crying toddler

Darla Neugebauer Marcy's DinerWhen restaurant owner Darla Neugebauer screamed at a toddler who was loudly crying in her restaurant then defended her actions on Facebook, it sparked a debate about parenting and the etiquette of disciplining noisy kids.

Neugebauer owns Marcy's Diner in Portland, Maine. It's a popular restaurant, and the busy owner had little patience on July 18 when a toddler began causing a scene, Chris Shorr of the Bangor Daily News first reported.

Neugebauer told local news station WCSH-6 that after hearing the child cry for 40 minutes, the restaurant staff requested that the parents either leave or take their child outside. When the parents instead decided to remain inside and ignore their screaming child, Neugebauer slammed her hand on the counter and shouted, "This needs to stop."

Neugebauer did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment.

Later that afternoon, Tara Carson, the mother of the screaming child, wrote a post on Marcy's Diner's Facebook page. "I had the worst experience at this establishment," she wrote, according to a photograph of the post taken and tweeted by WCSH's Ted Varipatis.

Carson went on to call Neugebauer an "absolute lunatic," "deranged," and "not suitable to run a business." Her post has since been removed.

Neugebauer responded with this fiery comment.

BuzzFeed Marcy's Diner

BuzzFeed was able to obtain screenshots of Neugebauer's first two posts concerning the incident before they were deleted, and you can see them here

Later, Neugebauer told WSCH-6 that although she may have used poor judgment, she has no plans to apologize since she was successful at silencing the little girl. "When things stop, it's usually a good thing," she said.

Facebook users are flooding the diner's page with their opinion about the incident, and many who have had their dining experiences ruined by loud children are voicing their support for Neugebauer.

Others, however, are criticizing Neugebauer for a lack of professionalism.

Early this morning, Neugebauer attempted to put the issue to rest with one final post on her diner's Facebook page.

It doesn't look like Neugebauer is too shaken by her critics."I might be a local hero," she told WCSH-6.

Schwa is run by a bunch of crazy motherf*ckers, and man do we love them. It’s unparalleled as far as expectations. Some days things are calm, and some days they wrestle in the middle of the restaurant and light off fireworks out back. All days the food is delicious.

El Ideas is tucked away and hard to find, but once inside, the super friendly and engaging staff makes for a great meal. The kitchen is completely open and you’re encouraged to walk in and chat it up while the chefs work.

The plates at Goosefoot are equal parts beautiful and delicious. It’s also a long meal, even for a tasting menu. Good news is it’s BYOB. Better news is they opened a wine store next door to help you select exactly what you need.

You won't believe the multimillion-dollar perk that comes with this ordinary job

dnainfoWho says Billionaire's Row has no affordable housing?

Resident managers at four of the newultra-luxurious condo towers near West 57th Street will live rent-free in multi-million dollar apartments while raking in six-figure salaries, according to documents filed with the state.

The resident manager at Vornado’s 220 Central Park South will live in a 1340-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath apartment with a walk-in closet and washer/dryer valued at $5,264,503, according to the condo’s offering plan.

The salary: $261,538 a year, plus union benefits.

At Extell’s One57, the 1,985-square-foot resident manager’s unit on the 34th floor sees your two beds and baths and raises you a powder room. Phone and electricity are also covered. The salary is $125,000 plus union benefits, including pension and health. The hours are 5 days a week, 8 hours a day, “and on call for emergencies day and night,” according to the offering plan. Duties include: “supervision of day-to-day building operation and building staff and liaison with residents for all homeowner related concerns.”

If you're more of a Park Avenue person, CIM’s 432 Park, unit 28M, priced at $3,918,000, comes with free utilities and a parking spot. The two-bedroom, two-bath 1,306-square-foot unit has wood floors, German appliances and bathroom fixtures and a walk-in closet. The salary is $125,000.

The sweetest gig in town may be the one at the MOMA tower, 53W53. The lucky resident manager will live in the Jean Nouvel-designed building beside the museum in a three-bedroom, 2.5-bath, 1,852-square-foot unit priced at $5.1 million. The salary is $225,000 and will be topped with union benefits.  No word if you can get away with sneaking a dip in the cold plunge pool on the spa deck. The job is not yet taken.

“53W53 is currently under construction, with occupancy scheduled for fall of 2018,” a spokeswoman for the building told DNAinfo. “So the topic of resident managers is very premature in this case.”

The management companies will post the jobs and make all hiring decisions, according to Rachel Cohen of SEIU 32BJ, the union that represents residential managers.

Of the five Billionaire’s Row condo towers that have filed plans with the state, only JDS’ Steinway projectwill not put its manager up. Their non-resident manager position pays $125,000 and will not be a union job, according to the offering plan.

25 hacks that will help you get through the airport as quickly and easily as possible

Airport woman with suitcase

Flying can be stressful, expensive, and exhausting — but it doesn't have to be.

We've rounded up the best tricks to make your next trip through the airport as easy as possible.

1. Get TSA PreCheck or Global Entry

Sign up for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry. The US Customs and Border protection pre-approval is basically a pre-flight upgrade, and will get you through security and onto the plane faster.

2. Book red-eye flights for an emptier airport

Long lines, crowded commutes, and traffic can be avoided by picking off-peak flights, especially overnight ones.

3. Use the Airport Parking Reservations app

Airport parking can be a harrowing experience — it's expensive and you may have to spend hours driving around to find a spot. The Airport Parking Reservations app, which is focused on airport parking in the US, Canada and UK, takes the stress out of the experience by allowing you to book a spot through your phone, choose the most convenient one, and book it at up to a 70% discount.

4. Pick the security line that's all the way to the left

Research has found that because most people are right handed, they gravitate towards the right, leaving security lines on the left with fewer people.

5. Or, pick the security line with the fewest TSA agents

If all the lines are equally long, choose the one with only one lone TSA agent staring at the computer. If there are two, chances are that one of them is being trained, and that pretty much every item will be stopped as it goes through the x-ray.

6. Bring Ziploc bags

Instead of awkwardly pulling shampoos and lotions out of your dopp kit, keep liquids in a separate Ziploc to easily pull out of your carry on. Bring an extra one to throw in your keys, jewelry and change at security as well, rather than grappling with loose change on the other side, barefoot, while the guy behind you tries to push by.

7. Pack extra densely to sneak on fluids

This might be risky, but the denser you pack your bag (lots of shoes, cables and electronics), the harder it is to see details on the x-ray, meaning that you might be able to sneak a bottle of wine onboard. However, you also risk losing it.

Frozen water bottle

8. Get liquids through security by freezing them

Ice is a solid, of course, so as long as liquids are frozen (make sure they don't melt by the time you get to the airport), they should be fine with the TSA.

9. Or, bring an empty bottle

Another way of bypassing the exorbitant cost of water at the airport is to simply bring an empty bottle. All airports have water fountains, and most even have water bottle filling stations.

10. Take a screenshot of your mobile boarding pass

Mobile boarding passes can be fickle. Sometimes the app signs you out, sometimes it crashes, sometimes you just don't have service. Take a screenshot of your boarding pass for easy access and to bypass any app related issues.

11. Check the My TSA app

TSAGet ahead of the game by checking current wait times and delays on My TSA. It'll also help you find the shortest security line.

12. Avoid luggage cart fees

Most airports no longer charge for luggage carts, but should you find yourself in one of the few airports that does, head to the pickup area to find a few strays that people have abandoned when getting picked up. Bonus: Smarte Carte will give you a quarter for returning carts.

13. Be loyal to one airline

Loyalty to an airline, as well as frequent flyer and reward programs, will get you perks like upgrades, lounge access, and priority boarding.

14. Get the GateGuru app

Basically an airport bible, this app tracks departure and arrival times, estimates TSA checkpoint wait times, features terminal maps with ATMs, bathrooms, lounges, shops and restaurants, as well as reviews, and even helps with discounted Avis car rental bookings. You can also choose to get push notifications for real-time updates to your itinerary (like gate changes, security wait time changes, delays or layover time adjustments). Another fun feature is that the app stores your travel stats, keeping track of the airports you've visited, miles you've flown and how you compare to other users.

15. Download the AirGrub app

Airplane food is notoriously bad, but recently airports have been stepping up their game with award-winning chefs and famous restaurant chains. AirGrub allows you to order food from your phone, pay for it through the app, and pick it up to eat on the plane. All you need to do is enter your flight number to see what meals are available near your gate.

16. Sit near a lounge for free wi-fi

This might not always work, but often at lounges the wi-fi signal is strong enough to extend beyond its doors, so sitting right outside of it may get you free wi-fi.

17. Check FourSquare for free wi-fi

Foursquare users not only post tips on the best meals, but often share wi-fi passwords.

18. Try and get into the lounge for free

Most lounges allow members to bring in a non-member. If you're friendly enough, you might be able to convince someone entering the lounge to sign you in as well.

19. Download the LoungeBuddy app

A handful of credit cards, like the Visa Black Card, Chase Ink Plus, Citi Prestige, and American Express Platinum, to name a few, either include free lounge access or a certain number of day passes a year. The LoungeBuddy app will not only help you figure out what lounges you can access by analyzing your itinerary, credit cards and loyalty status, but also maps out what lounges are nearby, as well as traveler's reviews of lounges around the world.

20. Or, treat yourself to a lounge pass

Airport LoungeMost airport lounges sell day passes, and others aren't affiliated with airlines at all. While these passes can be pricey (though buying them online in advance is usually a lot cheaper), if you have a lot of time to kill you might end up saving money, since access to the lounge includes wi-fi and food, both of which are notoriously expensive at airports.

21. Bring an outlet splitter

There are never ever enough outlets at airports, so bring your own outlet splitter and make some new friends.

22. Know where to get some shuteye

Airport chapels are a good place to find some peace and quiet, but if you're looking to catch some zzzs, check Sleepinginairports.net for the best places to sleep at airports around the world.

23. Never wait in line to get rebooked

If your flight gets cancelled or there's a really long delay, you'll find yourself in a stampede heading towards the help desk. Instead of following the herd, get on the phone with your airline ASAP. Get even more of an edge by pre-programming their numbers into your phone, because when a flight with hundreds of people gets cancelled, every second counts. The person on the phone can do everything the gate agent can, and may even have more options for rebooking. Plus, you get to skip the line. That said, the line is often worth it for food and hotel vouchers, should they be giving those out.

24. Tweet airlines

Arguing with some poor, stressed out gate agent will never do you any good, but we've found that airlines are super responsive to social media, especially tweets. As long as you're polite, tweeting at airlines might get you some extra perks.

25. Don't be afraid to ask for things

Always ask for upgrades — the worst that can happen is a polite rebuffal.
