A home in Palo Alto is worth more than twice as much today as it was in 2006

escobita avenue palo altoAspiring entrepreneurs and coders have been moving to Silicon Valley in droves for the past half-century.

High demand, combined with a multitude of buyers with disproportionately high salaries, have made this part of northern California a very expensive place to live.

Real estate site Zillow recently dove into its data to find what they call "the luckiest home buyers in America."

These are people who bought their homes in the right place at the right time: just before home values in that area skyrocketed.

According to Zillow's analysis, Palo Alto residents who bought their homes in September 2006 are the most savvy property owners in the county.

In 2006, the median value of a home in Palo Alto, California, was $1.17 million. Today, that same home would be worth more than $2.4 million, a more than 105% value appreciation.

Palo Alto, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, is home to a number of wealthy tech executives, including Apple CEO Tim Cook, Google CEO Larry Page, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer.

Richmond, California, was second in Zillow's analysis. Home values in the city, located across the Bay from San Francisco and perhaps best known for hosting a Chevron petroleum refinery, have appreciated by more than 103% since October 2011.

100 days of chipotle

Andrew Hawryluk has eaten Chipotle for 153 days straight — and he has the receipts to prove it.

The 23-year-old animator from Los Angeles joked to his brother that he was going to eat Chipotle for the 40 days of Lent.

He began documenting his journey on his website, Chipotlife, posting photos of each meal and receipt.

"Once the 40 days ended it was so anticlimactic," Hawryluk told Business Insider. "I decided to see how much longer I could do it."

Hawryluk has now eaten at Chipotle 153 days in a row. To date, he's spent $1567 on Chipotle.

He buys extra meals in advance of company holidays like Easter and July 4.

Hawryluk orders white rice, chicken, guacamole, and lettuce. He tops the concoction with Tabasco chipotle hot sauce.

"It’s an undeniably delicious meal," Hawryluk said on his blog. "It tastes kind of like Mexican sushi."

Hawryluk posted a picture of his bodybuilder physique on his blog to show that Chipotle hasn't caused him to gain weight.

He has no plans to stop eating at Chipotle every day, even planning his vacations based on which cities have the restaurant.

"I'm going to Vancouver, and they have one," he said. "I want to go to Berlin, but I can't because they don't have a Chipotle."

The company is aware of his experiment and sent him gift cards for his birthday.

Hawryluk says he still isn't tired of Chipotle.

"It's cheap, it's consistent, it's delicious," Hawryluk told Business Insider. "You know what you're getting every time."

"Chipotle is objectively the best restaurant," he writes on his blog. "I believe the main factors that determine the quality of a restaurant are cost, taste, speed, decor, consistency, ingredients, portion size, and transparency. If you know of a restaurant that dominates any or all of these categories as thoroughly as Chipotle does, please let me know."

The world's first figure-8 ferris wheel is being built inside this $3.2 billion Macau casino

Studio City Macau

Studio City Macau is a giant new casino rising in Macau's glitzy Cotai Strip (the peninsula's answer to the Vegas Strip). And smack-dab in the middle of the development is the world's first figure-8 Ferris wheel.

The whimsical ride is a sign of the times in Macau: As mainland China's anti-corruption campaign and visa restrictions loom, developers are scrambling to bolster the peninsula's non-gaming attractions.

With its faux Art Deco design, the $3.2 billion casino apes the golden age of Hollywood in all the signature ways — glitzy gambling floors, movie-themed entertainment options, a 1,600 room hotel, and finally, a Ferris wheel built to look like a gigantic 35 mm film reel.

Studio City Macau

Stretching 425-feet high, the "Golden Reel," as the ride is called, also happens to be Asia's highest Ferris wheel. It's sandwiched between the two huge towers that house the casino's many hotel rooms.

You can board one of the wheel's 17 cars (each with space for up to 10 passengers) on the 23rd floor of the hotel. As the ride moves, it snakes around the steel gold circles in a figure-8, similar to the movement of a film's reel. There's no crossover in the middle, however, so it's not a true figure-8. To get a sense of the movement, imagine two number threes facing each other.

Spectacular views of the city and the South China Sea are guaranteed.

Studio City MacauBuilt by Liechtenstein's Intamin Amusement Rides, Studio City Macau's Golden Reel is a clear response to Chinese regulators' demands for more non-gaming attractions.

The casino will also include a themed ride called "Batman Dark Flight," a variety of live magic shows, a nightclub, shopping outlets, a number of fine dining establishments, and a Warner Bros.-themed kids' center.

The Ferris wheel is currently undergoing mechanical tests and the entire casino is slated to open later this year.

An Olympic torch will once again be prominently passed when the one carried by Caitlyn Jenner during the 1984 Olympic torch relay is handed off at Heritage Auctions’ Summer Platinum Night event on July 30 — a highlight of the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago.

Jenner and the torch crossed from the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe into California as part of an 82-day relay that covered over 9,300 miles and 33 states. At the time, the 34-year-old athlete and winner of the 1976 Olympic decathlon had recently fallen off a motorcycle and sustained a broken leg, but she managed to have the cast off in time to participate in the relay.

The torch is expected to sell for more than $20,000. But it will not be the only item up for auction that will fire up collectors.

riley curry cooking competition

Yet another video of the adorable Riley Curry is making the rounds, and this time she's dancing the Nae Nae.

But we just found another clip from late last year that shows the three-year-old has been a great performer since she learned how to talk.

The two-minute video shows Riley judging a cooking competition between her parents, Steph and Ayesha Curry.

Riley first rose to fame when she made her presence known at a press conference while her dad was taking questions in May. Since then, she's made another press conference appearance and, most recently, danced the Nae Nae.

And in this throwback video posted by ESPN on Jan. 9, she's fully of witty rejoinders despite being barely able to speak a full sentence.

In the video, a one-off ESPN spoof called "Kitchen Warriors," Stephen and Ayesha have to cook their own version of chicken curry, as requested by Riley.

Riley then decides which one of her parents is the winner.

You'll have to watch the video to see what happens, but here's a hint: Riley has a pretty strong reaction to her dad's dish...

Rachel Dolezal still insists she's black

Rachel Dolezal

A little over a month after her outing ignited a firestorm of indignation, sensuality, and porn offers, Rachel Dolezal is still identifying as a black woman, despite both her parents being of European ancestry.

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the embattled impostor once again digs her heels in and insists that she is black, which she defines as a distinct identity from “African American,” and that she didn’t deceive anyone:

It’s not a costume,” she says. “I don’t know spiritually and metaphysically how this goes, but I do know that from my earliest memories I have awareness and connection with the black experience, and that’s never left me.

It’s not something that I can put on and take off anymore. Like I said, I’ve had my years of confusion and wondering who I really [was] and why and how do I live my life and make sense of it all, but I’m not confused about that any longer. I think the world might be—but I’m not.”

…“It’s taken my entire life to negotiate how to identify, and I’ve done a lot of research and a lot of studying,” she says. “I could have a long conversation, an academic conversation about that. I don’t know. I just feel like I didn’t mislead anybody; I didn’t deceive anybody.

If people feel misled or deceived, then sorry that they feel that way, but I believe that’s more due to their definition and construct of race in their own minds than it is to my integrity or honesty, because I wouldn’t say I’m African American, but I would say I’m black, and there’s a difference in those terms.”

“Sorry if you felt deceived when I lied about who my dad was, but that sounds like a personal problem to me.”

When the writer told Ms. Dolezal that most people consider “black” and “African American” to be synonyms, she responded with an evasiveness borne of years of toil in the academic mines:

“It’s hard to collapse it all into just a single statement about what is,” Dolezal says. “You can’t just say in one sentence what is blackness or what is black culture or what makes you who you are.”

Rachel DolezalCongratulations, identity politics, you’ve officially birthed a monster and equipped it with the language necessary to talk circles around any attempts to put it in its place. And I’m including myself in this.

On the one hand, I know Rachel Dolezal does not even meet American society’s already quite convoluted definition of what makes someone “black.” On the other, it’s hard to discredit her arguments without holding an essentializing definition of race. Snake, meet tail. Someone smarter than me please come explain, using decolonized language, why this woman who I intuitively know should take a seat, should take a seat. bell hooks? Bueller? It’s too early in the week for this.

You’ve got to admire her chutzpah, if nothing else.

Chicago is about to get the world’s largest rooftop greenhouse, and it’s the size of an entire city block

greenhouse

In April, the eco-friendly soap manufacturer Method opened up its newest factory on Chicago's South Side. This is no ordinary factory  the $30 million space is equipped with three solar "trees" that move with the sun and a 230-foot-tall wind turbine. Combined, the on-site renewable energy sources generate a third of all energy for the building.

But the most innovative element of the factory is on the roof, where a a 75,000 square foot greenhouse is set to be fully planted this fall. When complete, the space will be the largest rooftop greenhouse in the world, growing up to one million pounds of greens each year.

For some perspective on the size of the greenhouse: the average size of a city block in many parts of the U.S. — including Portland, Oregon and Houston, Texas— is 67,600 square feet. An NFL football field is 57,600 square feet. The Method greenhouse is larger than all of these things.

method

When designing the factory, Method looked to Ecover, its green cleaning partner brand, for inspiration. In 1992, Ecover built the first of what it calls "ecological factories," outfitted with sustainable building materials and a green roof.

"We wanted to meet the highest standards of green building," says Saskia Van Gendt, Method’s Chief Greenskeeper.

The rooftop greenhouse, which was built by a company called Gotham Greens, is much more efficient than a conventional agriculture operation, using 20 times less land and 10 times less water.

Instead of going in the ground, the plants are grown with a hydroponic system that requires water but no soil. Computer systems control irrigation, heating, cooling, and other variables.

methodfactory

The greenhouse, combined with its accompanying growing system, weighs a lot — so much so that Method had to re-engineer the factory roof for structural integrity. It also insulates the factory below, helping to keep energy costs down.

Once it's up and running, the greenhouse will produce a number of different kinds of pesticide-free greens, including kale, arugula, bok choy, and butterhead lettuce.  Gotham Greens will distribute the produce to local stores, restaurants, and farmer's markets.

"We need to use our urban spaces more efficiently," says Van Gendt. "Rooftop greenhouses are a representation of a model of doing that."

Diversify your coding skills with this $7 course bundle

$

coding javascript

You don’t need in-depth research to see that web development and coding are still highly sought after— and often lucrative— areas of expertise in today’s increasingly tech savvy job market.

The more you can get to know the key programming languages that make up our beautiful Web, the greater your chances of landing a high-paying position will become.

Attaining such knowledge, however, isn’t exactly straightforward.

If you’ve picked up some coding chops already and are looking to make your ideas a little more actionable, the Pay What You Want: Web Hacker Bundle currently listed on StackSocial provides a good and varied bridge from beginner- to intermediate-level abilities. Like similar deals we’ve highlighted in the past, it provides you with seven relatively comprehensive courses filled with lectures, lessons and, test projects that are applicable to both mobile and more traditional environments.

The bundle doesn’t cover all the essentials, but it’ll help sharpen your skills with major languages focused on both the front-end (like JavaScript) and the back-end (like PHP) of web development. Popular options like Python, Ruby on Rails, and MySQL are also highlighted, and you’ll be able to ingratiate yourself with tools like Apache Cassandra (for data management) and Docker (for more easily deploying apps) as well. You’ll make games, image galleries, Wordpress plug-ins, and other goodies along the way.

The elephant in the room is that a fair chunk of this knowledge is available for free through online sources like Coursera, but the bundle is organized and diverse enough to make its low $6.83 asking price worth it. That’s the average cost you’ll need to beat to get all seven courses in this “pay what you want” deal, but if you’re only interested in the aforementioned Apache and Docker lessons, you can name your fee and code away.

Pay What You Want: Web Hacker Bundle, $6.83 (average price), available at Stack Social.

The manager of a McDonald's in Scotland confirmed the existence of what has heretofore only been urban legend — the McDonald's secret menu. For years, I've read about a "secret menu" that offers up ridiculous items like the "Land, Sea, and Air Burger," which is a Big Mac stuffed with a chicken and fish patty, so I took to the streets of New York City and even tried to order one.

The employee at the time denied the existence of such a menu. Now the secret is out.

Taking a bath in warm crude oil is a popular spa treatment in some parts of the world

crude oil azerbaijan bath

Forget mani-pedis and seaweed wraps.

In Azerbaijan, you can go for a completely different kind of spa experience: a 10 minute bath in warm crude oil.

Soaking in a unique grade of oil produced in Naftalan, Azerbaijan is once again becoming a popular health spa activity in the energy-rich former Soviet Republic. According to locals, sitting in this liquid commodity is great for one's health.

The oil "can heal more than seventy diseases, including neurological diseases, skin conditions and impotence," Hashim Hashimov, a medical specialist at Naftalan Health Center in Baku, Azerbaijan told Reuters.

(This so-called medicinal Naftalan oil happens to be "too heavy to have much commercial value," according to the NYT.)

In a typical oil-immersion spa secession, roughly one barrel's-worth is heated up to about 40 degrees Celsius (or 104 degrees Fahrenheit) by a health center guru. Spa-attendees are permitted to stay in that bath for only ten minutes because, otherwise, "it can affect the heart rate," according to a BBC report. After the bath, the oil on the patients' bodies is scraped off for roughly 40 minutes, while the rest of it "goes back to a communal tank for future bathers."

A 10-to-12 bath course will set you back roughly between $200-$240 at The Naftalan Spa, although prices could vary at other spas and for other treatment options. As a reference point, a barrel of Brent crude oil is currently around $57/barrel.

spa azerbaijan oil bathHealth spas like the one where Hashimov works attract people from Russia, Kazakhstan, and Germany he told Reuters. Back in the 1980's, these kinds of oil resorts were at peak popularity, although the practice reportedly goes back as far as the 6th century BCE.

Notably, you can't just take a salubrious bath in any crude oil you happen upon.

The oil found in Naftalan, Azerbaijan is different from typical commercial varieties as it contains a special "ingredient" that "local scientists believe ... has curative properties," according to the BBC report.

"Naftalan crude contains about 50% naphthalene, a hydrocarbon best known as the stuff of mothballs," according to the NYT. "It's also an active ingredient in coal tar soaps, which are used by dermatologists to treat psoriasis, though in lower concentrations."

However, many American researchers would probably not recommend that you run to lather your skin with naphthalene just yet.

The US Department of Health and Human Services "concluded that naphthalene is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen" and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) "concluded that naphthalene is possibly carcinogenic to humans, because there is enough evidence that naphthalene causes cancer in animals, but not enough evidence about such an effect in humans."

Still, if you're ever feeling brave in Azerbaijan, a crude oil soak-and-scrape could potentially be an enjoyable way to spend an afternoon.

This quote from a fifth grader says everything about how kids spend their time

For over 30 years, the name "Nintendo" has been synonomous with joyful children.

Though many of the kids who once loved Nintendo have since grown up, the Japanese company's aim remains steadily targeted on the younger demographic.

But with the advent of smartphones, tablets, and multiple home computers, kids have never had more options at their fingertips over the distractions of yore.

Simply put: Nintendo's still popular with kids, but not quite as popular as, say, Snapchat.

Look no further than this excellent piece in Paste Magazine for evidence of that:

“Maggie,” I say, “you seemed pretty negative earlier. What do you play instead of Nintendo?”

“Instagram,” she says.

And in that child's (hilarious) response, we can see where kids are going instead of their handheld Nintendo 3DS game console. Instagram is actually the most popular social network among teens – a demographic kids like Maggie are just about to enter.

The Paste piece focuses on the recent passing of Nintendo president Satoru Iwata. Writer Jon Irwin is spending the summer teaching "ten- and eleven-year olds" at an educational camp outside of Atlanta, Georgia, and he asked the kids a variety of questions about that passing. Interestingly, of the kids present, "nearly all" own Nintendo devices. It sounds like gawking at rich kids living lavish lives may just be more appealing than Italian plumbers and pocket monsters.

An 8-year Navy veteran and chef explains how to avoid dehydration

$

Euro heatwave France

As the mercury rises — and we are in the thick of it — it can be hard to keep hydration at an optimal level to ensure quality exercise, avoid fatigue, and prolong endurance.

Soldiers, sailors, athletes, spouses and kids; no one is immune to dehydration.

Dehydration is a general term used to mean loss of water. There are several kinds of dehydration, but for my purpose here, I want to talk about the most common kind, which occurs when water intake isn’t enough to replace free water lost.

Your body can lose water through normal physiologic processes like going to the bathroom, sweating, and simple exhalation, or abnormal processes like throwing up, diarrhea, or blood loss.

Anyone who’s been to the sandbox knows what it’s like to drag ass; every endurance athlete has battled a poor performance; every booze hound has faced an awful morning because of it. I’ve been all of the above: sandbox dweller, athlete, and booze hound, and all to the extreme. Dehydration ain’t pretty. But I know how to fight and even prevent it.

In 2008, I raced Ironman Arizona and it was a toughie. In the words of Ironman columnist Lee Gruenfeld, “Temperatures in the mid-90s and enervating winds on the outbound leg of the three-loop bike course conspired to plant this season’s opening event firmly into the record books as having the third highest dropout rate in Ironman history. Nearly 18% of the field failed to make it to the finish line.”

As I rode past both elite and amateur athletes under emergency medical care on side of the road, I decided to double my gatorade intake. During the run, I chowed on bananas for potassium and drank water for hydration, broth for salt, and cola for sugar.

dubai international triathalon bike race bicycle

Whatever I did was just enough because I was on the edge of collapse. I’ve never written about that race, but let’s just say, I finished, barely, covered in my own throw up.

I’d properly hydrated before the race, but I hadn’t taken in enough electrolytes and micronutrients to allow me to finish strong. Lesson learned.

Anyone’s body can begin to fail due to dehydration. Milder symptoms include thirst, headache, fatigue, and irritability. As a dehydration situation becomes more dire, failure of the mind follows. Then we start looking at severe symptoms: delirium, dangerous spikes in heart and respiration rates, shock, and fainting.

Registered dietician Nutritionist Sara Burrill, a Navy veteran and one of my two favorite sisters, explains, “If a healthy, well-hydrated person loses 15% of bodily fluids, organs can begin to fail. A person of average health will see similar symptoms at 12% fluid loss.” As organs fail, you die. Don’t die.

Before you shrivel into oblivion, drop your kid, or pass out on the track, implement these ways to stay hydrated.

Drink water.

water bottle

You can last for days without food, but water is absolutely essential to bodily function. Follow  the “8×8” rule (eight eight-ounce glasses each day) as a baseline and increase as weather or conditions dictate. I suggest eight additional ounces of fluid for every 15 minutes of vigorous activity. I take in a gallon of water per day, at a minimum, but keep in mind that drinking too much water can lead to hyponatremia. I recently went through this when too much water in the body diluted the sodium content in my blood. So be smart and at least get your 8×8 down the hatch.

Replenish electrolytes.

Minerals found in the blood, called electrolytes, help control the amount of water your body retains. Coconut water and sports drinks are great ways to replenish when your body is in need of trace minerals, salt, and sugar. I avoid sports drinks and prefer coconut water, if necessary. Coconut water is lower in carbohydrates, but rich in potassium.

Monitor water loss.

wrestling sweaty sweat wrestle

If you are banging out workouts like a boss, weigh yourself before and after, even if you’re sipping during the workout. For every pound you lose, drink an additional 16 ounces.

Losing too much water during the course of a workout leads to muscle cramps, dizziness, and loads of other complications. Have hydration nearby with every workout. Run with a handheld bottle, sports belt, or your camelback. (Mine is camo and I think it’s pretty badass.)

Get color conscious.

Check out your urine. It should be a pale yellow. Anything too dark indicates dehydration, but keep in mind certain foods, like beets and supplements, can alter the color. If your pee is clear or borderline clear, you might be overly hydrated. This isn’t exact science, but can be helpful, especially when your kid is acting out of whack after a park play date.

Eat your water.

Cucumbers

Foods carry varying levels of water. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s nutrient database, cucumbers top the water-logged fruit and veggie scale at 95% and have a decent nutrient content, watermelon is 93% water and full of trace minerals, and strawberries come in at 92% and a healthy dose of fiber and vitamin C. Bananas don’t have as much water, but are potassium rich, one of those trace minerals essential to bodily function.

Celery and lettuce aren’t as nutrient rich, but pack serious hydration. I throw them and/or bananas into my mixer and make calorie and nutrient-rich smoothies as meal replacements when I’m on the go. Here’s an example recipe from my blog, and every month I have a superfood smoothie column you can check out in Iron Man magazine.

Avoid alcohol.

beer whiskey whisky liquor bar

Sad as it may be, alcohol is dehydrating and should be avoided before any strenuous activity. It’s also taxing on the body to exercise or do hard work with a hangover. My college days of waking up with a buzz and running Boston’s Charles River are over. That’s what happens when you get old; you get a little smarter about these things, hopefully.

Plan ahead to avoid dehydration. Carry water with you throughout the day and drink it before you get thirsty. If you have a big workout or upcoming mission, up your intake and stay off the sauce. Use common sense. Your body will thank you with heightened performance, clarity of mind, and radiant skin.

Being dehydrated in the field can mean life or death. You owe it to you comrades and loved ones to be operating at an optimum level.

11 things you should do before moving to Switzerland

$

Lucerne, Switzerland

Switzerland is a great place to visitIt's also a great place to be an expat.

But the process of becoming an expat isn't always easy and can be daunting when you don't know the steps to take.

Here are 11 things Americans should do before you make the big move to Switzerland.

1. Obtain a residence permit and submit your documents to your embassy.

The first two things Americans need to enter Switzerland is a valid US green card and passport, which allow for up to a three-month stay in the country. Those planning on staying longer than three months need to obtain a residence permit or "Ausländerausweis" as it's called in German.

There are three kinds of permits: short-term residence permits for those planning to stay less than one year, annual residence permits for those planning to stay longer than a year but not indefinitely, and permanent residence permits, which offer an unlimited stay in the country.

The Swiss don't let just anyone into the country. In order to be approved for a residence permit, you have to have a job offer and it has to be for a job that cannot be done by a Swiss national. Your company must second you — assign you to work in a different department for a certain period of time.

Once that's been determined, the next step is to submit all your documents to the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington DC. Those documents include an application, offer of employment, two passport photos, your original passport, and the visa fee. It's best to get your paperwork in to the embassy sooner than later since processing takes anywhere from eight to 1o weeks.

2. Figure out your moving strategy ahead of time.

Woman Moving Truck

Shipping household items such as furniture, matresses, and appliances internationally takes time. So if you choose to move your items before you leave the country, consider staying at a friend or relative's home until you make the move. You can then have your items delivered right when you arrive in Switzerland.

Or you can choose to have your movers come right as you leave the country, but then you'll have to find a temporary living situation once you arrive in Switzerland while you wait for your items to be delivered. Either way, looking into moving companies before your move will help reduce stress and ensure that you choose the option that's best for you.

3. Fill out an application for the items you plan on bringing with you into the country.

As long as you're making Switzerland your new place of residence, the Swiss government allows you to import belongings duty-free. However, that's only if you fill out form 18.44 (Declaration/Application for clearance of relocation goods) and have it with you to present at the customs office. The website of the Swiss Federal Customs Administration is a good place to go for more information.

4. If you plan on bringing a pet, make sure it's been vaccinated against rabies.

Cat at the Vet

Swiss regulations require a vaccination certificate for any dogs or cats entering the country. Your pet must have been vaccinated at least 30 days before entering the country, but the vaccination can't be more than a year old. In addition, dogs, cats, and ferrets have to be microchipped for identification purposes.

5. If you plan on having a car in Switzerland, know that you'll need a motorway vignette.

Although you won't need to apply for a Swiss driver license until a year after moving – you're allowed to drive in Switzerland for up to a year with your American driver license as long as it's valid — you will need to obtain a motorway vignette or "Autobahnvignette" in German. This is a sticker that goes on your windshield that allows you to drive on all of the country's highways. It costs 40 Swiss Francs per year (around $42) and can be purchased either at the Swiss customs office or at gas stations and post offices around the country.

6. Notify your bank of your move, and look into opening a foreign bank account.

It's a good idea to keep at least one bank account in the US, especially if your move is not indefinite and you still have property — and therefore bills to pay — in the US. However you'll want to make sure you tell your bank that you're moving and will be using your debit and/or credit cards from a foreign country. Otherwise your bank is likely to assume your card has been compromised or stolen and cancel it.

Even if you keep your American bank account, you'll probably want to open a bank account in Switzerland so you can use local ATMs and have some of your money in the country where you live. Start researching banks before moving; you might even want to try to open an account and transfer some money into it in order to make your transition and arrival more smooth.

7. If you're moving with children, look into schooling.

kids classroom ipads

The Swiss school system is very different from the American school system. So while sending your kids to Swiss school is a great way for them to learn the language and pick up on the country's customs quickly, it can be a tough adjustment at first.

The other option is to look into sending your children to international school. Most international schools give students the choice between following an AP (advanced placement) program or IB (international baccalaureate) program. The AP program is more similar to an American curriculum, while the IB program is better for students hoping to stay in Europe or go to the UK for college. The common language spoken at school — except for in language courses — is English.

International schools fill up quickly though, so it's a good idea to look into enrolling your children as soon as you find out about your move. Picking a school can also help determine where you're going to live, since you'll want your children to have a manageable commute.

8. Figure out if your health insurance will still cover you abroad.

Some health insurance companies offer coverage that travels — ie you're still covered when you move to a different country. But that isn't always the case, so make sure to check with your provider.

Also keep in mind that even if your health insurance will cover you in Switzerland, you'll still need to register with the residency office of the canton— or state — that you'll be living in. Foreigners have up to three months to complete this registration. Upon registering, the canton will tell you if you they accept your international health care plan — if you have one — and if not, what your options are for a Swiss health care plan. Each canton within the country offers one or two health insurance providers — known as "sickness funds" — to choose from.

9. Ask your company about a salary adjustment.

Switzerland's cost of living is one of the highest in the world. Chances are, maintaining the same type of lifestyle you had prior to moving to the country will cost you more to maintain once you actually move there. This could be an issue if your salary stays the same. For this reason, it's a good idea to ask your employer about adjusting your salary so that you're able to deal with the higher cost of living in the country.

10. Familiarize yourself with the language.

Zurich, Switzerland

Switzerland is split up into three regions: German, French, and Italian. Know what region the city you're moving to is located in, and learn a few necessary phrases in that language if you don't already know some. Even though most Swiss speak impeccable English, they'll be happy to see you make the effort to speak their native language, especially if you're going to be living in their country.

Keep in mind that although the Swiss who live in the German region of Switzerland learn proper German in school, they mainly speak a dialect of German known as Swiss German everywhere else. Because Swiss German is not a written language, it can be a little hard for foreigners to pick up. In the first few months, ask to speak "hoch Deutsch" (high or proper German), until you start picking up on Swiss German.

11. Be ready to embrace your experience living in Switzerland.

Moving to a foreign country is a great opportunity to get to know a different culture and to travel. The more you make the effort to establish roots in your new home, the more you'll be able to do these things and really absorb the experience.

If every trip you take is a visit back home, you'll be missing out on many of the benefits living abroad has to offer. Make the effort to celebrate holidays in Switzerland, have friends from home come visit you, get to know the new area you live in, and make friends with locals. This will not only help to make you feel more at home, but will also help you to take full advantage of living in Switzerland.

A New York restaurant is serving spaghetti in a completely different way

A Manhattan restaurant is aiming to make spaghetti portable.

Emanuele Attala, chef and co-owner of Spaghetti Incident on the Lower East Side, tells QSR Magazine that in his hometown of Rimini, Italy, it is customary to put pasta in a paper cone.

 on

"During the summer they do a festival on the beach … They use this kind of yellow paper, typical for butcher or fish market. Wrapped in a cone in this kind of a paper [is] a salad and pasta," he said.

Attala started practicing this at his restaurant, using double layered, high-quality paper to keep the items from leaking.

The New York Times reportsthat the cones of pasta cost from $6 to $12.

"You can get properly al dente spaghetti or bucatini with various sauces, and also salads and arancini, in sturdy paper cones with lids," the Times writes.

Attala tells QSR he is considering opening a food truck that only serves spaghetti in cones.

 on

"It is much better in the cone, and it’s cool. It looks like ice cream," he tells QSR. "You can try to walk in the street and have the flat plastic to-go [box], you have to stop yourself. With a cone, you can keep walking."

A basic principle explains why doing a 'detox' is utterly useless

woman girl drinking juice

Ever wished there was a way to cleanse your body of those last few months of subsisting on greasy takeout and leftovers?

No, you don't need to spend the next four days juicing and declining invites to dinner.

Meet your liver and kidneys.

Together, these two toxin-bashing organs act as a super-efficient system for filtering out most of the harmful substances we eat and drink.

While our kidneys filter our blood and remove any waste from our diet, our liver processes medications and detoxifies any chemicals we ingest. Paired together, these organs make our bodies natural cleansing powerhouses.

"Unless there's a blockage in one of these organs that [cleanse our bodies] day and night, there's absolutely no need to help the body get rid of toxins," family physician Ranit Mishori of the Georgetown University School of Medicine told NPRMishori has spent years reviewing the medical literature on cleanses.

Where did the idea of detoxing start?

detox diet lemon juiceThe original detox diet, called "The Master Cleanse," was thought up in the 1940s by Stanley Burroughs as a "natural" way to treat stomach ulcers. The method was never substantiated by any research.

He published a book describing it called "The Master Cleanser." The cleanse consists of a daily regimen of six to 12 glasses of water mixed with lemon juice, cayenne pepper, and maple syrup, plus a laxative at bedtime. Yum.

Cleanse proponents like Peter Glickman, who helped resurrect the cleanse in 2004 with a book called "Lose Weight, Have More Energy and Be Happier in 10 Days: Take Charge of Your Health with the Master Cleanse," say dieters begin to feel "euphoric" and "serene" after about a week of not eating. We could think of better words to describe the sensations of incipient starvation.

Why 'cutting sugar' is wholly unecessary

Perhaps you don't want to do a cleanse — you just want to get one of the alleged toxins you eat every day (like sugar) out of your system.

There's a basic principle that explains why you don't need to completely eliminate anything from your diet — aside from things you're allergic to, of course.

It's called dose-sensitivity, it's a basic tenet of toxicology, a branch of science that focuses on potentially harmful effects of things we encounter in our environment. As author Alan Levinovitz explains in his recent book "The Gluten Lie," this principle explains why consuming low and high doses of something — like water, for example — can have entirely opposite effects. Have enough to keep you hydrated, and you function like a normal person. Have six liters in one sitting, and you could die.

The same idea can often apply to sugar and many of the other "toxins" we seek to rid our bodies of.

Small amounts of sugar, like would be found in a serving of fresh fruit or a cookie after lunch, are likely far from harmful; huge amounts, like would be found in six cans of Coke or several bags of M&Ms, are probably harmful. (Overconsumption of sugar has been linked with serious health problems, from cavities and weight gain to insulin resistance, diabetes, and heart disease.)

Rather than cutting sugar completely or trying to finagle another way to rid your body of the "bad" foods you eat, a better alternative would be to eat them in moderation.

35 life hacks for the modern gentleman

Confident Gentleman

There are certain things every guy should know.

From how to properly cook a steak to clear-cut rules on matching your dress shoes to your suit, these tips will make every guy's life a little easier.

CLOTHING & STYLE

1. Roll your shirt sleeves the right way.

Instead of rolling the cuff slowly up your sleeve, flip the cuff back and pull it to just below your elbow. Then take the bottom (inside-out portion) and fold it up so it traps and covers the bottom cuff. Your shirt sleeves won’t unroll again.

2. Pack a suit without getting it wrinkled.

Simply wrap the suit in tissue paper and place it in a bag to keep it in good condition.

3. Learn the "sometimes, always, never" rule of jacket buttons.

The top button should sometimes be buttoned (stylistic decision), the middle button should always be buttoned (it pulls the jacket together and is flattering), and the last button should never be buttoned (it messes up the tailoring and flare of the jacket).

4. Match your dress shoes and suits.

Follow this simple chart to learn what colors and styles are best. If you're wondering which shoes to wear with shorts and chinos, click here.

5. When possible, always try to buy full-grain leather goods.

It's the highest-quality leather money can buy, it will last forever, and it’s far superior to top-grain and genuine leather.

6. Invest in quality shoe trees.

A good pair of shoe trees will maintain the shape of your nice work shoes, prevent the leather from warping or cracking, and absorb any excess moisture from your shoes so they don’t rot from the inside out. Bespoke shoe trees are the best for your expensive shoes.

7. Hang your suits and dress shirts on cedar wood hangers.

The cedar acts as a repellent for moths and absorbs moisture. And unlike wire hangers, these thicker hangers will not damage or stretch out clothing

8. Fold your sweaters instead of hanging them.

Even lightweight sweaters stretch out if they're on a hanger for too long. It's better to fold sweaters in your wardrobe and hang dress shirts and T-shirts instead.

9. Go sockless without causing a stink.

There's an easy way to cheat that oh-so-popular sockless look.Loafer socks are undetectable, but effective at soaking up sweat so there's no funky odor.

10. Use leather soap and oil to preserve your shoes.

After a tough winter, make sure to take care of your nice shoes. It will dramatically increase their lifespan and ensure your footwear investment pays dividends for years to come.

11. Let your shoes breath between wears.

You shouldn't just slip on the same trusty pair of dress shoes day after day. Why? Because if you let them rest they'll stay alive that much longer.

GROOMING

12. Use a non-soap cleanser before you shave.

Soap is bad for your skin. Really bad. The basicity of both liquid and bar soap dries your skin out and leaves it rough and raw. A non-soap cleanser like Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser is best for daily use.

13. Follow three simple steps to avoid razor burn.

We've outlined them here

14. Always tell a new barber how long it's been since your last haircut.

Barbers know how long it takes for hair to grow, so if you tell them how long it has been since your hair was last cut, they can imagine what your hair looked like way back when. From there, you can either tell them you want it to look the same or describe how you want it to be different from last time.

15. Tailor your haircut to your face shape.

If you have a rounder face, get a haircut that's tighter on the sides. If you have a longer face, ask for longer hair on the sides and around your temples.

16. Keep your sides cropped short if you're dealing with male pattern baldness.

Get the sides cropped close with scissors or clippers and the top short with the hair brushed to the side. Don't get any kind of part since you don't want any hard lines drawing eyes to the "problem area."

17. Only wash your hair three times a week.

Most hair professionals agree that you should wash you hair at most every two to three days. Some barbers, like Van Cappizzano of Ball and Buck in Boston, even advocate abstaining from shampoo altogether.

18. Pour salt on any stain immediately.

Say your date spills some red wine (it happens). Scatter some salt on it right away and work it into the carpet with your hands. Leave it there for a few hours and then vacuum it out.

19. Walnuts can get rid of wood scuffs.

Seriously. Run your finger along the scratch and then rub the walnut into it, too. Your finger will warm up the nut’s oil and help it soak into the wood. Then buff with a cloth.

walnut wood scratches

20. Fix your credit-card magnetic strip with cellophane tape.

Place it over the magnetic strip if your credit card ever stops being read by those machines.

21. Wrap some duct tape around an old gift card.

It's hard to find a small roll of duct tape to keep around your office or around the house. Instead of carrying around a huge roll, take an old gift card and wrap some duct tape around it for an impromptu, smaller roll. You can then either stick it in your wallet or keep it in a drawer so you always have it on hand.

22. Realize the effectiveness of a lingerie bag.

Though a lingerie bag can be used for underwear, for men it becomes a great tool to wash loafer socks, watch straps, and anything else that might get lost in the tumble.

23. Avoid drying your clothing at all costs.

Dryers do nothing but destroy clothing. Your clothes will last longer, look nicer, and not shrink if you air-dry them instead.

24. After washing tennis shoes, tuck shoelaces into the dryer door before drying.

A neat trick can stop your shoes from tumbling around in the dryer when you try to wash them. If you close the door on the shoe's laces, the shoes will hang there, still get dried by the heat, but avoid that terrible sound and possible dryer and/or shoe damage. It's a win/win/win.

KITCHEN

25. Use your thumb to tell if your steak is cooked to temperature.

This is a tip that Old Homestead Steakhouse co-owner Greg Sherry told us: Bring together your index finger and thumb and feel the fleshy area below the thumb  — that’s what rare feels like. Do the same thing with your ring finger and thumb — that’s medium. And the same with the pinky finger and thumb — that’s well-done.

26. Eat chicken wings the right way.

Eating drumsticks is easy, but the wing is a little harder because there are two bones. This blogger figured out how to easily remove the bones and dunk the entire wing.

27. Buy a really expensive, quality knife.

It'll last you forever, won't dull as quickly, and will make cooking so much easier. In fact, you’ll even save money in the long run because you won’t keep buying cheap knives.

28. Sharpen your knives with a ceramic mug.

A few strokes of the blade against the bottom is all you need. Just make sure the rough ceramic is exposed.

BAR

29. Know what kind of whiskey to drink and when.

If you’re getting wasted with shots, well, whiskey is fine. If you want a spicy whiskey neat or on the rocks, go for a rye whiskey. Check out our full breakdown of what whiskey to drink when.

whiskey flow chart infographic

30. Learn the difference between "strong," "weak," "sweet," and "sour" cocktails.

Strong means you want more alcohol, while weak means you want less. Sour means there will be a citrus note (lemon, lime, orange) while sweet means that sugar or syrup is involved.

31. Remember this simple "stirred versus shaken" rule.

Stir drinks that are all spirits and shake drinks that have egg, dairy, or citrus (unless otherwise specified).

32. Let lemon and lime juices sit out to age.

These two citrus juices taste best after they’ve been allowed to sit for 4 hours (you can keep them bottled, sealed, or refrigerated). Don’t do this with oranges though — freshly squeezed is the way to go!

33. Know how to make an Old-Fashioned.

Place a sugar cube in an old-fashioned glass and saturate it with two dashes of bitters and plain water. Muddle together and fill the glass with ice cubes and two shots of bourbon or rye whiskey. Then garnish with an organic slice and cocktail cherry. Done.

Cocktails Infographic full

34. When adding ingredients to cocktails, always start with the cheapest.

For example, add your citrus, then fruit juice, then alcohol.

35. Make simple syrup in a pinch with lime juice and brown sugar.

Mixed to taste, it's a great substitute that won't change the taste of the drink significantly.
