Explore 'Battleship Island,' the isolated city that's sat untouched off the coast of Japan since 1974

SebastienTixier_Hashima_01

Hashima Island, also known as "Battleship Island" due to its shape when seen from a distance, is an island off the coast of Nagasaki that's full of history. Nine miles from the coast, Hashima Island became occupied in 1887, when an underwater coal mine was built and began operating there.

Because of its distance from shore, the island became a permanent home for the mine's workers and their families. Hashima became a self-contained town, with homes, stores, and streets. Much of the architecture above ground was dedicated to large concrete apartment buildings to house the island's inhabitants.

In 1974, the coal mine was closed and all the residents left quickly after, leaving the island completely uninhabited. It has sat untouched ever since.

French photographer and explorer Sebastien Tixier visited the island in 2008 and brought back amazing images of the eerie, decaying, and utterly singular place. "It is quite unique place in the world: an entire city, on a totally urbanized island, completely abandoned," he tells Business Insider.

Tixier shared a selection of photos of the island with us. He has also compiled his photos in to a book, which you can get a copy of here

Tixier first became interested in Hashima Island as a joke. He was having a beer with a few friends and urban explorers, lamenting the fact that there didn't seem to be much left to explore. One person, in jest, suggested the island of Hashima. Initially they laughed, but then Tixier began to think about it seriously.

Tixier decided he had to go. He and some partners did research and then set out to Japan to try to gain access. When they arrived, Tixier says they discovered that "we were clearly not so prepared! None of us spoke Japanese and we had no idea how to get [onto the island]. Yet, it was amazingly easy to do."

Tixier visited Hashima Island twice, a year before commercial tours of the area became available in 2009.

Keanu Reeves has created a $78,000 motorcycle, and it looks incredible

Keanu Motorcycle

Keanu Reeves’s love of motorcycles runs deep—so deep that not only has he not abandoned bikes after several painful mishaps on Los Angeles roads, the 50-year-old actor still prefers to ride on two wheels through L.A. traffic than drive in a car.

Harnessing that passion, Reeves persuaded the custom-bike builder Gard Hollinger to become his co-conspirator on Arch Motorcycles, a low-volume manufacturer whose first product is the Arch KRGT-1.

Crafted at Arch’s Hawthorne, Calif., headquarters—located just blocks away from Elon Musk’s Space-X facility—the $78,000 KRGT-1 is a ground-up design incorporating extensive use of CNC billet-aluminum construction and an array of premium details.

Wheels are constructed entirely of carbon fiber by BST, the elegantly minimalist electronic instrument panel comes from MotoGadget, and the power plant is a hulking 2,032 cc S&S Cycle unit, mated to a Baker 6-speed transmission. Virtually all body surfaces are shot-peened and anodized for a sleek, slightly textured metallic finish that very high quality and almost futuristic.

During a daylong ride with Reeves in the rolling hills of Malibu, Calif., the KRGT-1 projected a charismatic (though not flashy) presence on the road, not unlike the megawatt personality of its company founder. Though the bike’s long wheelbase means its handling will not be confused with a nimble sport bike, the KRGT-1 manages to maintain high levels of controllability and stability when pitched into corners. The S&S V-twin pulls strongly from nearly any engine speed, and the chassis feels supple and compliant over bumps.

Keanu Motorcycle

We sat down with Reeves for insight into his company and its first product.

Robb Report: How did you decide what kind of motorcycle the KRGT-1 would be, and how it would be set up?

Keanu Reeves: When I first met Gard [Hollinger], and once we decided to do something together, we started with the idea of being able to go for a long ride. And then it was, “Well, then, how do you ride? And what do you want out of a ride?”

RR: Can it carry luggage?

KR: A backpack—and emotional luggage. But you try to get away from emotional baggage when you ride, which kind of lets everything drop away. It’s a cruiser and it performs. That’s where the intention came from, just the riding experience. It’s so fantastic.

RR: How are you addressing personalization?

KR: We’ve been trying to find not only an aesthetic seat, but a functional seat. Today, all of the bikes have different, subtle seat technologies. With cutouts, some are just bench seats and some have back pads in them. Whatever the customer wants with the seats we can do. And there are certain anodized colors and different finishes we can do. The bike can also be ergonomically customized.

RR: As a celebrity, how are you positioning yourself in relation to the company?

KR: I don’t necessarily want to be in front of the bike and say, “Hi. I’m Keanu Reeves. You might have seen me in this movie, but I also sell motorcycles.” [Laughs.] I don’t want to quite be that guy . . . I’m invested financially, but before that I’m also invested personally. I hope that people enjoy the bike enough that we can sell enough of them to keep going. I think we’ll always have the KRGT-1, but I’m really curious to see what we come up with for the next model.

Blind mom mother sees unborn son for first time 3D printing

In a heartwarming demonstration of how modern technology can help people achieve something that simply wasn't possible years ago, a blind mother was recently able to "see" her unborn son for the first time by touching a 3D printout of his ultrasound.

Tatiana Guerra, who has been blind since she was 17, was 20 weeks pregnant when diaper company Huggies Brazil offered her the chance to meet her meet her unborn son, Murilo, for the first time.

Unable to see ultrasounds, expecting mothers like Tatiana have traditionally relied on verbal descriptions to get a sense of what their child will look like. But thanks to advancements in 3D printing that make it cheaper to print out physical models that can be touched and felt, that's beginning to change.

Working with 3D printing company The Goodfellas, Tatiana was surprised with an accurate mold of Murilo's face, accompanied by the phrase "I am your son" inscribed in Braille, according to 3DPrint.com.

The woman behind the Tumblr that turns celebrities into redheads says she's not 'anti-ginger'

put a rang on it sofia vergara

A Tumblr blog that imagines what celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Kendall Jenner and Zayn Malik would look like if they were ginger is making the rounds on social media and has amassed more then 7,000 Instagram followers since April 28.

Australian ad creative Nadia Ahmad is the brains behind the blog, which is called "Put a Rang On It." "Rang" or "ranga" is a derogatory term for a person with red hair in Australia. It comes from the word orangutan, according to Urban Dictionary.

Other outlets that have covered this Tumblr suggested that the celebrities looked worse with red hair and that the blog was created in order to point that out. NewNowNext went as far as calling the blog "sickening" in a headline. This rubbed some — including Ahmad — the wrong way, although NewNowNext has since clarified on Twitter and via email with us that they meant "sickening" as a positive adjective, the way it's used in the drag community and on other posts on their site.

 on

Follower reactions on the project's Instagram account are mixed. The comments below, for example, all appear under Zayn Malik's photo.

put a rang on it ginger instagram account

But Ahmad insists that the blog wasn't created to hurt feelings or pile on to the anti-ginger hate that many redheads experience. Read on for our Q&A with the Put A Rang On It (PAROI) creator.

 on

BUSINESS INSIDER: How did you get the idea for this?

NADIA AHMAD: The name ‘Put A Rang On It’ was created a couple of years ago by my friend Josephine Burns (who is a fellow redhead) and myself. We were in a bar talking about an idea that had to do with ginger hair and it was coined ‘Put A Rang On It’. Years past and that idea didn’t go anywhere, but the name stuck with me so I recently decided to focus on famous faces and launched it on Tumblr, Instagram and Facebook just over a week ago.

 on

BI: Are you ginger yourself?

NA: No, I’m not, but thinking I might dye my hair now.

BI: Are you trying to make a statement at all with this, or do you just think people look interesting with red hair?

NA: The statement PAROI is making is that these celebrities look really good with red hair. I didn’t start PAROI to be malicious and I want people to understand that.

 on

BI: How do you feel about people who say hurtful things about gingers? For example, the headline that called PAROI "sickening" — what's your reaction to that?

NA: Yes, I saw that and it actually pissed me off because that is absolutely not what PAROI is about. It’s about embracing redheads and giving more power to them.

 on

BI: How do you decide which celebrities to put on PAROI?

NA: Sometimes it’s just who’s top of mind. Other times it’s event based, like the Met Gala. I also posted several ‘Throw Back Thursday’ images. Most suggestions come from friends, but I also like to throw in a few randoms like Jean Claude Van Damme, Betty White and Chewbacca.

 on

BI: You're Australian, right? What is the perception of redheads and gingers there?

NA: Yes, I am. My belief is people should judge others on who they are as people rather than what they look like or where they come from. Most Australians, and a vast amount of people around my age, are the same way. I’m proud to say that I have such a diverse group of friends who can all laugh at themselves and at each other, so it really doesn’t matter, as long as you’re not coming from a place of hate.

6 short-sleeved shirts you need this spring

$

0

We asked our friends at MR PORTER.COM, the men's style destination with same-day delivery in Manhattan and London, for expert style advice. This week's topic: the 6 short-sleeved shirts you need this spring.

Screen Shot 2015 05 07 at 9.06.02 AM

Some of us seem to fear short-sleeved shirts. Perhaps the blame lies with men who wear them with boot-cut jeans as part of a mandatory uniform for a night on the tiles. Maybe it’s the fault of TV writers, whose signifier for “this character is socially inept, but good with computers” is often a plain, oversized version of the garment. And what about Mr Michael Douglas, playing the divorced and unemployed engineer Mr William “D-Fens” Foster in Falling Down? An iconic short-sleeved shirt wearer and a total psychopath.

You can see why this item has spent a few years in the sartorial penalty box. Once a classic piece of work attire dating back to an era before offices were air-conditioned, the short-sleeved dress shirt has done its penance and is back as a smart addition to every man’s casual wardrobe. Here are a few of our favourites.

The perfect pastel

Screen Shot 2015 05 07 at 9.30.31 AMThe colour of this shirt reminds us of a hue you might find on an Amalfi-coast villa, or in a (mint) ice cream – both things that make for a particularly idyllic summer. It’s a timelessly sophisticated item from a brand that’s well known for its classic US-made pieces. We’re already planning a few summer garden parties to get some appropriate wear out of this.

Freemans Sporting Club slim-fit shirt: $195

The sun seeker

Screen Shot 2015 05 07 at 9.30.39 AMWe can imagine sipping cocktails on a beach or by a pool in this shirt, given its deep navy hue and the laid-back, summery feel that most Saturdays Surf NYC pieces are infused with. A smart button-down collar is countered by a subtle dot pattern, created by a delicate horizontal stitching. Pair with some chinos that are on the slim side to up the sophistication, and keep a blazer in mind for when summer days cool to night. To finish, just add Wayfarers.

Saturdays Surf NYC stitched cotton shirt: $110

The great white

Screen Shot 2015 05 07 at 9.30.59 AMThere’s no more classic or versatile an item in a man’s wardrobe than a crisp white shirt, and it’s no different when the sleeves are short. Although obviously not a dress shirt, the trim tailoring and sharp collar of this Calvin Klein Collection piece lends itself perfectly to a smart sensibility. And if paired with a blue jacket and some dark leather shoes, it can be dressed up or down for just about any occasion.

Calvin Klein collection Carbon short-sleeved shirt: $350

The smart choice

Screen Shot 2015 05 07 at 9.31.15 AMA classic blue and white stripe brings a businesslike air to a short-sleeved shirt – and this one is suitable for any office that doesn’t require formal dressing. The button-down collar keeps everything neat and tidy, and the trim on the sleeves helps you show off those “guns” you’ve been working on all spring (right?). You want the fit slim, but not too tight – so no buttons tugging at fabric across the chest. Seersucker is perfect for the heat – whether you’re in the sun or the office – and Thom Browne’s unique proportions mean you’ll stand out from the crowd.

Thom Browne striped cotton-seersucker shirt: $390

The cool cat

Screen Shot 2015 05 07 at 9.31.35 AMSome designers have gone full-on Happy Days with the bowling shirt this spring, adding everything from thick stripes to contrast collars. Beams Plus utilises a spread collar, but keeps things subtle in navy chambray, so you wouldn’t stand out too much were you to wear this in a relaxed work environment with black jeans, for example. Alternatively, it’s perfect for the weekend when the weather calls for some cool cocktails. This is a piece we can imagine a mid-1950s Mr Miles Davis might have enjoyed.

Beams Plus camp chambray shirt: $115

The check mate

Screen Shot 2015 05 07 at 9.31.54 AMMost prints or patterns only enhance the inherently casual nature of a short-sleeved shirt. But a gingham or check can bring an authoritative air that, say, flamingos or palm trees never will. Simply up the smartness and steal some slick rockabilly vibes with a pair of light wool trousers or some blue chinos. Make sure the sleeves don’t come down near the elbow, or you’ll look less Mr Eddie Cochran, more sullen teenager.

Grayers Clifton check cotton shirt: $78

To tie or not to tie?

Teaming a tie with a short-sleeved shirt can conjure up images of NASA control rooms or Homer Simpson. But there is a way to pull it off (if you’re brave enough).
Try these tips:

Keep it slim: Knitted ties are best (with a square base). Keeping your neckwear contemporary is key to avoiding geography-teacher territory.

Be daring: Being a little eccentric with your tie will help avoid the jumbo-jet pilot look. Subtle pattern and a bit of texture will work wonders, and your go-to brand should be Marwood.

Break things up: Adding more elements to your look will alleviate any of the stuffiness we’re trying to avoid. Try wearing a button-down shirt with its top button undone and a T-shirt visible underneath.

Turn up: Mr Nick Wooster can make a tie and short-sleeved shirt work effortlessly. You are not Mr Wooster, so turn up the sleeves of your shirt to avoid looking as if you’ve just stepped off the set of The Office

Wear a jacket: If it’s warm and the occasion warrants a tie, you might want to go with a short-sleeved shirt to beat the heat. Wearing a jacket means you not only look smart, but you can choose whether you reveal the length of your sleeves or not.

Or try one of these:

Left to right: Grayers, $80; NN.07, $120; Acne Studios, $280.

Left to right: Theory, $185; Lanvin, $575; Margaret Howell, $260.

Making Mother's Day breakfast at home? Here are 9 luxurious toppings for mom's eggs

caviar and eggs

For mothers and mother figures, one of the perks of the job is sleeping in and being served breakfast in bed on Mother's Day.

To her, a humble tray of scrambled eggs and toast (made by the ones she loves) is tantamount to room service at The Plaza.

But wouldn't she be delighted if you spooned a little caviar on top of those perfectly soft scrambled eggs? Of course she would. In that spirit of easy luxury, here are nine things you can crown her eggs with this Sunday.

1. A sprinkling of truffle salt.

For around $15 to $30, you can pick up a jar of truffle salt at nearly any food or grocery store.

2. Actual shaved truffles.

fresh black truffleBlack truffles (aka black diamonds) can be purchased year-round at specialty food stores and online (D'Artagnan is an excellent source). If you're short on time, swing by Whole Foods and grab a tin of Urbani black truffle and mushroom purée

3. Fresh pesto.

This one's a piece of cake to pick up. And it'll make her eggs green! A side of ham (serrano or ibérico if you're fancy) would be a good move here.

4. Paper thin slices of lox.

salmon loxThe combination of buttery eggs and briny lox is the stuff of waking dreams. Sliced thin, they can be draped over the eggs or folded on top like ribbon.

5. Showstopping gold leaf.

You can find edible gold leaf at high-end kitchen supply stores like Sur la Table. She will light up when she sees it.

6. Cheese, glorious cheese.

CheeseThe possibilities here are endless ... A showering of nutty parmesan, a dollop of tangy goat cheese, whatever tickles her fancy.

7. Fresh herbs and edible flowers.

Edible flowers are common in better grocery stores like Whole Foods. As for herbs, try laying down a few criss-crossed, whole chives.

8. Undetectable grated bottarga.

She'll taste these yellow-orange shavings of dried fish roe before she sees them — surprise!

9. And finally... caviar

petrossian caviarHow can you go wrong with eggs on eggs? Bonus points if you add crème fraîche and chives into the mix.

beth beard before and after gastric bypassThe before-and-after weight loss update is a social media staple at this point.

A Canadian woman and her photographer friend have taken the medium one step further by adding hair, makeup, wardrobe, elaborate sets and digital post-production to the mix.

Beth Beard approached Blake Morrow to ask if he would take her picture before she underwent gastric bypass surgery, Morrow told Business Insider.

"I was immediately onboard and excited about the idea," he said, "and in no time turned it into this giant series of dramatic imagery that was created. Beth and I brainstormed a bit, and then I went away and conceived and conceptualized the portraits, and then photographed, art directed, and composited them together."

He and Beard have known each other for almost 10 years, he said, and share "a love for geeky pop culture stuff." Morrow is active on Twitter and Instagram, and Beard is also a photographer in her own right.

beth beard before and after blake morrow

The first round of photos were shot a few weeks before Beard's surgery, Morrow said, while Morrow's friends provided clothing, styling and makeup and hair for the concepts he'd devised. Two years later, after she'd lost 150 pounds, Morrow brought her in for the "after" photos.

He shot about 24 versions of Beth and ended up using 12 of the Beth personae for the portraits. It took four to five months just to select the portraits and make the composites. He added environments in Photoshop while compositing the before-and-after portraits, he said.

"Beth's energy on set was great," Morrow said. "She was the perfect muse to photograph. She was fearless and was able to take advantage of her theatre background to bring drama to the shoots."

Morrow called Beard's weight loss an "amazing" accomplishment.

"The portraits I created as 'The Beth Project' are my way of celebrating her accomplishment," he said, "and hopefully putting something out there that encourages others to reach for their own personal best. Beth and I have already been hearing from people all over the world in the midst of their weight-loss journeys, or have been encouraged to start theirs after seeing the imagery."

mike judge house

Mike Judge, creator of "Office Space," "Beavis and Butthead," and, most recently, HBO's "Silicon Valley," has sold his Malibu ranch house for $4.3 million, Variety reports.

"Silicon Valley," partially inspired by Judge's time as an engineer in the 1980s, is a hilarious satire of today's tech industry.

Judge's 3,696-square-foot home has six bedrooms, a large pool area, and a detached guest house. It was originally listed for $5.3 million in 2013.

Judge also owns a 7,300-square-foot mansion in Austin, in addition to a large house in Santa Monica.

The home sits on a large, grassy lot in the Point Dume section of Malibu.

Originally built in the 1970s, the home was remodeled in 2002.

Inside, you'll find lots of the dark wood typical of the Craftsman style.

When he and his wife were looking for a place to raise their children, they wanted a property where they could teach their children the value of nature and provide ample space for play. That’s not exactly easy to find in the confines of Los Angeles County.

They eventually found a stunning 6,000 square foot, five-bedroom house on three acres of property in Malibu, California, bordered by state parks on one side and a gorgeous ocean view below.

Jones invited us over to check out the property.

Mike Jones and his wife, psychologist Dr. Jennifer Jones, live with their two kids in Malibu, off the scenic Pacific Coast Highway. To get there, you have drive up a long and snaking set of roads.

And through a private gate. Their house is set so far into the property that you won't even see it until you make your way halfway through the "driveway."

The house was built in 1958, but you wouldn't know it from the outside. It is one of the most booked houses in California for shooting commercials. The house has been featured in Verizon, Bose, and Apple commercials, among others.
