shark skitchFootage uploaded on YouTube earlier this week shows an 8- to 9-foot bull shark swimming alongside the seawall of a waterfront residence in Bonita Springs, Florida.

"It's really dangerous. I'm a parent and a grandparent and I don't let my kids or my grandkids to go in the water out here anymore," a resident told NBC 2.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened.

According to NBC 2, people are throwing bait into the water to lure in fish, which has also started attracting sharks. shark swimming

The bull shark is one of the most dangerous sharks in the world, according to the Florida Museum of Natural History. They're found in "abundance" near some human populations in the tropics, and they've been known to attack humans unprovoked.

AccuWeather notes that Florida tops the list of locations with the highest shark activity.

The 24-hour guide to fantastic men's grooming

$
0
0

We asked our friends at MR PORTER.COM, the men's style destination with same-day delivery in Manhattan and London, for expert style advice. This week's topic: must-have grooming products.

Screen Shot 2015 04 16 at 3.20.58 PMUnlike looking good in a tuxedo, being well-groomed is a full-time pursuit, which benefits from consistency, routine and a certain amount of dedication. As with exercise, and eating, if you’re one of those people whose personal trainer makes them eat six micro-meals a day (we do so enjoy joining you lot for dinners out, by the way) getting yourself into a daily rhythm helps a lot, and with a little patience, the results can be fast and dramatic. Here’s the MR PORTER guide, then, to grooming your way through the course of a day.

7 AM: The shower

Screen Shot 2015 04 16 at 3.38.59 PMBoth a hygienic necessity and an emotional crutch, the shower is your gateway into the world of the living – so it will help your general well-being if set out to make it as pleasant as possible. Jump in prepared with a few options – if you’ve got up on time and want to look and smell like a million dollars dipped in sandalwood and suede, Tom Daxon’s Resin Sacra is a particularly opulent variety of shower gel, which can be followed up with a matching body lotion to further moisturise and smooth your skin. If you want to greet the day a little less guns-blazing, then we recommend Ren’s light Neroli And Grapefruit Body Wash, which should both stimulate the circulation (thanks to Neroli’s aromatherapeutic qualities) and tone the skin (as the cold-pressed grapefruit oil used in this formulation both reduces oil and minimises pores). Hair care is a deep enough topic to constitute a whole guide in itself – but, for the moment, the most important thing is to identify your hair type and issues and pick a shampoo and conditioner accordingly. Stockholm-based brand Sachajuan is a good place to start here, given that it supplies a range of shampoos for different hair types, from normal to dry, including a revolutionary and highly effective anti-dandruff Scalp Shampoo – remarkable in its category in that it smells like rosemary oil and ginger rather than toilet cleaner.

8AM: The brush and shave

Screen Shot 2015 04 16 at 3.39.12 PM

We understand that at this point in the morning many people can barely open their eyes, but it’s crucial to pay attention here, as this is a time at which your day can really take a turn for the worse if you’re not careful. Brushing your teeth before you leave the house goes beyond style – it’s basic consideration for everyone that has to stand next to you on the tube – but you can certainly carry it off with finesse by trying out Foreo’s innovative Issa toothbrush, which employs high intensity vibrations and a hygienic silicone brush to offer users nothing less than the smile of the future. Shaving, of course, is crucial and full of pitfalls (in order of unpleasantness, ascending: cuts, burns, the dreaded bumps). We can’t help you hold your hand steady, but we recommend (a) that you prep your skin properly with a pre-shave lotion (D R Harris’ Arlington is a mild astringent with a citus-fern scent that slightly lifts the hair bristles, allowing you to cut them closer to the skin); (b) don’t skimp on the shaving cream (see the new grooming range from Penhaligon’s for inspiration); and (c) use a fresh razor for each shave (the sharper the razor, the less drag on the skin and hair bristles, therefore, the less irritation). The easiest and cheapest way to do this is to invest in a traditional safety razor from Baxter of California – the initial outlay is considerable, but the sturdy design can be refilled with standard razor blades, which come at a fraction of the cost of disposables and replacement heads. Once that business is out of the way cleanse deeply with Ren’s Hot Cloth Cleanser and then moisturise – it’s the best way to avoid the sudden appearance of rashes and blemishes during your 11am meeting. Finally, remember the deodorant (again, your commuting cohorts will thank you).

1PM: The gym

Screen Shot 2015 04 16 at 3.39.25 PMAt this time of day you may really be at your local, sizing up a pulled pork slider and wondering whether to go for that fourth coffee, you know, to push you through the afternoon. But for the purposes of this guide, let’s assume that you did what you promised this January and joined the virtuous ranks of those that make it to the gym at lunchtime. Grooming-wise, somewhat obviously, showertime is the first crucial step here – though if you can restrict the amount of grimacing and straining you put your face through during your work-out, that’s also good. It’s an awful drag rummaging around in the kit bag for seven different bottles to take with you for your post-treadmill hose down, so make your life easier by equipping yourself with Pankhurst’s Head To Toe Shampoo. It not only does exactly what it says on the tin, it’s an attractive tin to boot. Post-shower, be sure to wash your face, as the sweat produced during exercise can cause irritation and blemishes if left on the skin. And as your skin, like those weird muscles on your inner thigh you didn’t even know existed, has just been through a lot, it’s best to use a gentle cleansing product such as the Blind Barber’s Wild Watermint Cleanser or, if you’re serious about avoiding red face in your 2pm video conference, try M.E. Skin Lab’s all-natural Cleanser 27, which also has a mild exfoliating effect.

7PM: A quiet night in

Screen Shot 2015 04 16 at 3.39.32 PMScreenwriting genius Mr Dalton Trumbo spent a lot of time in the bath – in fact, that’s where he did most of his writing. The result? Spartacus and Roman Holiday. Now, we’re not promising anything, but surely this is evidence enough that everyone has time for a bath once in a while – and that the results can be beneficial. Actually, they almost always are, though not usually in the form of epic scripts. Bathing is fantastic for opening pores, exfoliating dead skin and, most importantly – if you leave your iPhone in the bedroom – chilling out. If you take a bath between 7pm and 9pm (later than that can keep you up) you can make the most of all three benefits by washing your face (the steam and heat of the bath will help this penetrate deep into the pores) with a gentle cleanser from Perricone MD and using a bar soap to scrub down the rest of your body (wait 15 to 20 minutes after you jump in, so the skin has had time to soften). Optional extras for the man who wants to put the “treat” in “treatment” include Foreo’s Luna, a sonic-pulse-emitting device that, when used on a low frequency setting, has an anti-ageing effect on the skin. Just try not to drop it in the water. After you jump out go for Aēsop’s Geranium Leaf Body Balm to maintain your skin’s glowing hydration.

8PM: A big night out

Screen Shot 2015 04 16 at 3.39.44 PMIt’s Taxi Driver time: take a look in that mirror, psyche yourself up and decide who you’re going to be tonight for that party/ dinner/ generic do. Or at least what he’s going to smell like. In the same way that you might match your watch with an outfit or occasion, you should match a scent to your mood, and keep several options on hand in case of troublesome swings. Feeling confident and outgoing? Go for Byredo’s Mister Marvelous – if the name alone doesn’t make your soul jiggle, its exotic notes of mandarin leaf and black amber will. For a more patrician sophistication, try D.S. & Durga’s Sir Cologne or Floris’ No.89 aftershave – the former has a rich, masculine base while the latter was a favourite of the late Mr Ian Fleming. Coyly raise one eyebrow, tip your Martini glass to your lips and imagine what that smells like (citrussy on application with a warm sandalwood base that deepens as you wear). Of course, one of the most difficult attitudes to maintain around other human beings post 7pm is a certain degree of mystique. But you don’t have to try so hard: Tom Daxon has concocted a spray-on version in the form of Reverie. It’s a fougère fragrance (meaning “fern-like”, think Brut for consenting adults), that combines contrasting notes (citrussy elemi, cool and languid iris, spicy rosemary and cypriol) in a rather intoxicating and unusual maelstrom of scent. Much better than the ice-breaker you’re currently rehearsing with your reflection.

11PM: And so to bed

Screen Shot 2015 04 16 at 3.40.16 PMSorry, no, you don’t get the night off. In fact, your skin is particularly prone to undesirable irritations while you sleep, getting increasingly dehydrated as the night goes on. We therefore recommend both a night cream (the results of these tend to be dramatic – prepare to be amazed) and, if you’re really looking to behave, supplements. Biotin, vitamin C and omega-3 fatty acids are all good for both skin and hair health. But, you cry, what about your mind? Groom that a bit before you drift off with a copy of The MR PORTER Paperback, and a Tom Dixon candle to help you relax. Snuff it out like a Dickensian gent, lie back, and try not to think of all the grooming you’re going to have to go through, once more, tomorrow.

In our increasingly health-conscious world, we are becoming more sensitive to the impact of the foods we eat.

A particularly controversial food is unprocessed red meat, which some believe to be a source of various health problems. However, many of these beliefs have no scientific basis.

Here are five common myths that have developed about eating red meat.

Celebrity trainer Tony Horton says this is the biggest mistake people make starting an exercise program

$

Tony Horton

Tony Horton is one of the most visible people — if not the most visible person — in all of American fitness.

The credit for that goes to his work creating P90X, the most successful home fitness program of all time.

Horton has created many home exercise programs and led training sessions himself, which gives him a particularly strong understanding of how people react to exercise programs.

We spoke to Tony recently and asked him about the biggest mistake people make when they begin an exercise program.

For Tony, it's all about the journey. And he thinks that the biggest mistake people make has everything to do with thinking about what they expect six months from now instead of focusing on crushing it right now.

Here's what he told us when we asked him about the biggest mistake:

"There's probably 20, but the one that comes to mind is that they have unrealistic expectations. And part B of that is that it's too much based on ego and not health and wellness …. but I think that most people who start workout programs put all their energy on the scale, a tape measure, the reflection in the mirror and the hope that people will say really nice things about how they look in the future."

"And none of that has anything to do with your health, your wellness, your fitness, your durability, your lack of vulnerability to illness and injuries, and that's where you should start. So it's all about prioritizing and purpose, if your purpose is more about 'I wanna do more, feel better, be less vulnerable, be more durable, and actually function well in my own flesh,' then that's a good way to do it."

"And typically it's not the focus on hoping things are going to change down the road as a result of something you're going to do now, so that you look better, and your dress size is smaller, and your belt goes down a few loops, and all that stuff."

"Ultimately I'm trying to create lifestyle programs through food and fitness. The idea here is to focus on being a better person, a more productive person, a less sick person, a better father, mother sister, brother, uncle, aunt, a better employee, someone who says 'yes' to things that are physically or emotionally challenging, as opposed to what they used to do prior to exercising and eating well."

The 30 most expensive homes in sports

$

lebron james house 2014

The biggest names in sports pay top dollar for homes that feature everything they need to relax off the court, field, or ring.

From Manny Pacquiao's new $12 million pad to Kobe Bryant's Orange County mansion — complete with a hair salon and shark tank — it's safe to say that these sports titans truly live in the lap of luxury.

We estimated the approximate current value of each house by looking at recent sales and public assessors' records, and speaking to expert realtors and appraisers in these homes' markets.

30. Floyd Mayweather Jr.'s Las Vegas getaway

Boxer

Estimated value:$3.6 million

Mayweather's mansion in the middle of the Las Vegas desert has 24-foot ceilings, crystal chandeliers, walls covered in red silk and textured glass, and every luxury imaginable. Its two-story movie theater, touch-screen video games affixed to the kitchen counter, golf course, and wet bar make it the perfect place to rejuvenate between fights.

He listed the "half Bellagio and half Caesar's Palace"-style home for $3.45 million in 2013 — the highest list price ever placed on it — but withdrew it in February of last year, according to Las Vegas real estate expert Joe Herrera, co-founder of The Joe Taylor Group. With a 600-square-foot walk-in closet and space for his fleet of sports cars, we can't imagine why he'd ever want to leave.

To estimate the approximate current value of the homes, we looked at recent sales and public assessors' records, and we spoke to expert realtors and appraisers in these homes' markets.

29. Maria Sharapova's Manhattan Beach abode

Tennis player

Estimated value:$4.1 million

Little is known about the place second-ranked tennis player Maria Sharapova calls home.

In 2013 she swapped out her Manhattan Beach, California, mansion for a quaint, $4.1 million oceanview property in the Hill section. She's a pillar of the M.B. community, having trained there for years and been awarded the key to the city in 2012.

Her other home, a Mediterranean-style home in Longboat Key, Florida — valued at $1.2 million— offers four bedrooms, a swimming pool, and a boat dock. She reportedly bought it with her winnings just before her 20th birthday.

To estimate the approximate current value of the homes, we looked at recent sales and public assessors' records, and we spoke to expert realtors and appraisers in these homes' markets.

28. Rory McIlroy's Florida paradise

Golfer

Estimated value:$5.2 million

In Rory McIlroy's 15,000-square-foot home in Jupiter, Florida, there's more than enough space for the 25-year-old golf champion to entertain. The estate holds six bedrooms and nine bathrooms, along with a game room, private gym, and, of course, a putting green. It was purchased in 2012 for $9.5 million, but it's currently appraised for about $5.2 million.

Right on the water, the house serves as a serene getaway from McIlroy's busy life. The location also provides space to dock a yacht, should he choose to purchase one.

Florida isn't McIlroy's only dwelling either; rumor has it that he's currently living on Dubai's famous Palm Jumeirah island.

To estimate the approximate current value of the homes, we looked at recent sales and public assessors' records, and we spoke to expert realtors and appraisers in these homes' markets.

There's a parenting trend that's taken over the US, and it's changing children everywhere

$
0
0

Katie Holmes Suri Cruise

According to the Department of Transportation, the number of elementary and middle schoolers who walked or biked to school dropped from 48% to 13% between 1969 and 2009.

What's happening here?

The Economist reports that in the US, wealthy parents have a tendency toward becoming "helicopters," constantly buzzing about their children, ferrying them from one extracurricular activity to another, and never letting them escape from sight.

It's become so normalized that when kids are spotted without an adult, it's seen as a crime, as in the case of a Maryland family that's been under police investigation for letting their kids walk home from parks alone. Child Protective Services charged the parents with "unsubstantiated child neglect" in March, The Washington Post reports.

Boston College psychologist and "Free to Learn" author Peter Gray tells Public Radio International that the helicoptering can smother a child's development.

"My historical research on this question suggests that there’s never really been a time or place in history, aside from times of slavery and intense child labor, when children have been less free than they are today in our society," Gray tells PRI. "This is a very, very serious issue."

Decades of research into what allows children to become successful and stable has revealed that autonomy is a defining factor. A young human needs to feel a degree of free agency in the way they navigate the world, otherwise they won't have the opportunity to become self-reliant or to develop the "grit" that's so closely associated with achievement.

What's worse is that children's declining autonomy is not a necessary response to a more dangerous world. That's a common misconception. Jennifer Senior of New York Magazine collected startling statistics showing how much safer things have gotten for kids in the US:

• The physical abuse of children fell by 55% from 1992 to 2011.

• Sexual abuse fell by 64% from 1992 to 2011.

• Abductions by strangers fell by 51% 1997 to 2012.

• Motor vehicle deaths for children under 13 years old fell by 43% in the past decade.

And as we've noted, America has become a much safer place for everyone since the 1990s — adults and kids both. But it's not just the last decade.

As The Washington Post reports, "there's never been a safer time to be a kid in America."

• In 1935, there were just under 450 deaths for every 100,000 kids between ages 1 and 4. Now there are 30 deaths per 100,000 kids in that age range.

• More than 800 child pedestrians were killed from being hit by a car in 1993. There were fewer than 250 such deaths in 2013.

• Reports on missing persons under age 18 have gone down 40% from 1997 to 2014.

Senior, the author of the best-selling "All Joy and No Fun: The Paradox of Modern Parenthood," says that the helicoptering isn't simply the result of parents being fearful for their children — it's a way of showing off their parental virtues to everybody else.

"It's become our new plumage, how we parent, peacockishly displayed on Facebook and in playgrounds and at birthday parties," she writes. "The result is a culture of surveillance and judgment rather than compassion and collaboration, and frankly, it’s exhausting — nor is it doing anyone one lick of good."

Shoppers can save a lot of money buying generic brands.

But some products are worth every penny.

A recent Reddit thread asked which items are worth shelling out for.

We selected some of our favorite responses.

1. Shoes.

"When I was a kid, my mom would always buy the Wal-Mart/KMart/Payless shoes that were no-name brand and my feet hurt all the time," writes IWannaBeAlone. "I'd also destroy them in the space of a month."

Everything changed when the author finally got a pair of Reeboks.

"I was amazed. My feet didn't hurt all the time! They lasted forever!" the happy shoe owner writes.

Larry David's Broadway debut "Fish in the Dark" was a smash hit before the first curtain even raised. The play broke the all-time record for advanced ticket sales, with a reported $13.5 million haul ahead of its premiere.

Audiences are paying big money to see Larry David, creator of "Curb Your Enthusiasm" and co-creator of "Seinfeld," perform in person.  However, there's always a chance that he won't be able to perform. Having an understudy waiting in the wings is a long-standing tradition in the theater. David's understudy is Richard Topol, a veteran actor who also plays a small role in the play.

Topol has an impressive résumé when it comes to both stage and screen. He also teaches acting at ESPA, which is the school associated with the Primary Stages  theater company.

We talked to Topol about his role as Larry David's understudy in "Fish in the Dark," and the unlikely story that led to getting the job.

How successful people make the most of their weekends

writing by a window girl woman lady journalingOver the course of our lives, we only get a few thousand weekends. The most successful people know better than to squander them by laying around or scrubbing the floors.

In her book, "What The Most Successful People Do On The Weekend," time management expert Laura Vanderkam outlines how to make the most of this sacred time off from your harried workweeks.

She outlines how you can take control of your weekends by planning ahead, being selective with your time, and finally indulging what you love most.

This is an update of an article written by Carolyn Cutrone.

The first step to controlling your weekends is making conscious choices.

It's so easy to plop down on the couch on a Friday night or Saturday morning and watch TV, but falling into these routines will suck away the few free hours you have. Instead of doing something by default, choose to decide how your time is spent.

Vanderkam writes, "In a world of constant connectivity, even loafing time must be consciously chosen, because time will be filled with something whether it's consciously chosen or not — and not choosing means that the something that fills our hours will be less fulfilling than the something our remembering selves will likely wish we'd elected to do."

Make appointments for yourself, even if it's only to read a book.

Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee says you need to have a plan for the weekend, setting specific hours or minutes aside for activities you want to do.Then you have to commit.

Huckabee advises: "If you know you want to read a book, then get the book out and have it set aside and make plans to read it. Say it's going to be at 1. When that starts, get on it. Don't wait until that afternoon, then think — could I read? Or listen to some music? Or take a walk? Then you'll sit about wasting an hour of what little time you have figuring out what to do with the rest of it."

You have to be disciplined and commit to the decisions you make.

Planning actually makes weekends happier, and unlocks a key mechanism of joy.

Vanderkam cites Harvard psychologist Daniel Gilbert's 2006 book, "Stumbling on Happiness." In it, Gilbert argues that "the greatest achievement of the human brain is its ability to imagine objects and episodes that do not exist in the realm of the real."

Gilbert is talking about anticipation. Anticipation accounts for a huge chunk of happiness, which comes from thinking about the events we plan. Vanderkam writes, "As you look forward to something good that is about to happen, you experience some of the same joy you would in the moment. The major difference is that the joy can last much longer."
