People are outraged and sending death threats after this hunter posted a picture with a dead giraffe

On Monday, Ricky Gervais posted a picture of 41-year-old hunter Rebecca Francis lying next to a giraffe she had killed.

He captioned the photo, “What must've happened to you in your life to make you want to kill a beautiful animal and then lie next to it smiling?”

What must've happened to you in your life to make you want to kill a beautiful animal and then lie next to it smiling?

Posted by Ricky Gervais on Monday, April 13, 2015

Since it was posted on Monday, Gervais’s post has been shared almost 69,000 times on Facebook. Commenters were outraged: “Giraffes are the friendliest animals ever. This b**** needs to be shot,” said one while another wrote “I would probably be smiling if I shot her (the woman, not the giraffe, you morons).”

Francis began receiving death threats on Twitter, too.

Though Business Insider was unable to trace where the photo Gervais posted originated from, Francis is a professional hunter who is no stranger to posting images of herself posing with dead animals — she has a gallery on her website of her big game kills such as dead lions, bears, zebras, and more.

She even became somewhat of a celebrity huntress after winning a reality show called Extreme Huntress in 2010.

Business Insider reached out to Francis to ask her about the controversy, but was unable to reach her. Francis did, however, give an exclusive statement to HuntingLife.com [emphasis ours]:

When I was in Africa five years ago I was of the mindset that I would never shoot a giraffe. I was approached toward the end of my hunt with a unique circumstance. They showed me this beautiful old bull giraffe that was wandering all alone. He had been kicked out of the herd by a younger and stronger bull. He was past his breeding years and very close to death. They asked me if I would preserve this giraffe by providing all the locals with food and other means of survival. He was inevitably going to die soon and he could either be wasted or utilized by the local people. I chose to honor his life by providing others with his uses and I do not regret it for one second. Once he was down there were people waiting to take his meat. They also took his tail to make jewelry, his bones to make other things, and did not waste a single part of him. I am grateful to be a part of something so good.

This is a similar sentiment to what Francis has written on her blog before in 2011:

There is no question that I am extremely selective about the animals I hunt. I feel it is absolutely necessary to hunt older and more mature animals. In a lot of cases, that puts that animal past it’s breeding prime and the animal can actually be kicked out of the herd and replaced with a younger, stronger male to introduce new genetics into the gene pool. Consequently, that animal can not only be bullied by the new male, but also be left all alone to suffer until it’s inevitable death.

Yet even with her new statement, many anti-hunters are not appeased. “Personally I don’t see how she could stand at the side of the animal with a big smile on her face even if she did do it a favor,” one commenter said. “She’s posing like she has a trophy!”

Francis joins Texas cheerleader Kendall Jones for receiving major backlash after posting pictures of herself posing with big game animals she had hunted.

Last year, outrage over Jones’s Facebook pictures posing with dead lions launched a Change.org petition that reached over 168,000 signatures that attempted to petition the American Embassy to ban Kendall Jones from hunting in Africa.

Gisele Bundchen victoria's secret

After more than 20 years, Gisele Bündchen has retired from the runway.

The world's highest-paid supermodel, the 34-year-old walked in her final show at Brazil's São Paulo Fashion Week.

Known in the industry as simply "Gisele," Bündchen has been the highest-paid supermodel for the past eight years.

She earned a stunning $47 million in 2014, according to Forbes. That's way ahead of second highest-paid model Doutzen Kroes, who raked in $8 million.

But before she was a one-woman empire, Gisele was an awkward teenager with modest aspirations in Brazil.

We chronicled how she broke into the scene and became a legend.

Gisele was born in Brazil, but her parents are of German descent. Here she's pictured (center) with her fraternal twin, Patricia, and another sister, Gabi.

Gisele was discovered by a modeling scout in Brazil while she was eating a Big Mac. Her childhood nickname was "Olive Oyl," a reference to cartoon "Popeye's" gangly wife. She won a contest and was sent to Sao Paulo. Here she's pictured in a 1995 interview telling the station about how she hoped to break into the business.

15 surreal pictures of Chinese 'nail houses' whose owners refused to cave to developers

Some homes are built out of spite. Others are left standing as a form of protest.

In China, "nail houses" — homes that remain standing despite pressure from real estate developers to sell — have become increasingly common.

In the cases of many nail houses, owners are protesting what they see as lowball offers from developers who want to build ambitious private projects on their land. A law passed in 2007 makes it more difficult for the government to seize land, but conflicts remain.

The resulting homes often look bizarre juxtaposed against modern high-rises, office buildings, and shopping malls. Some even stand proudly on roads, forcing drivers to take detours around them.

This ramshackle home stood on the square in front of a shopping mall in Changsha, in China's Hunan province, in 2007.

One of the most famous nail houses in China, this home in Wenling, Zhejiang province, belonged to an elderly couple that found their compensation offer inadequate. As a result, it stands in the middle of a road that was paved through their village.

Another nail house in a road, the owner of this home in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, reportedly failed to reach an agreement about compensation for demolition.

Kids in the UK are playing a dangerous game called 'sleeper,' where they 'cover the mouth and noses of younger children until they completely pass out'

On Wednesday, parents in Manchester, UK were alerted about a “Dangerous New Craze” in their playgrounds.

According to the Manchester Police Facebook post, a new school yard game known as “sleeper” had caused one child to be hospitalized.

Older children are covering the mouths and noses of younger children and causing them to pass out from lack of oxygen or “go to sleep,” according to law enforcement.

The Manchester Evening News reports that police were alerted after a local school teacher in the Collyhurst neighborhood informed them to the so-called schoolyard prank.

The full statement reads:

Dangerous New Craze Warning

Attention all parents/guardians...

We have received reports of a new craze called 'Sleeper' This involves children completely covering the mouth and noses of younger children until they completely pass out

This is extremely dangerous, a child is currently in hospital being treated after falling victim to this game. Please advise every child you know and warn them of the dangers, this could easily lead to concussion or even death.

Parents are being encouraged to warn their children about the game.

And while many parents were scandalized by what some were insisting was “attempted murder,” others were quick to point out that this is not a new “prank,” simply an old activity for a new generation:

"Sleeper" is similar to other pass out games that teens and children have long played with one another.

In 2005, an asphyxiation game went viral in the US where middle schoolers were choking themselves or their friends to feel the euphoric high of oxygen returning to their brains. Whether it was at the hands of their classmates or with belts, ropes, and even bicycle locks, the game ended up causing the deaths of three teens in 2005, according to TODAY.

Pass out games again gained national attention after two Chicago teens accidentally killed themselves while attempting to feel a high in 2010, as did a California-based teen in 2012.

And just last year there were parents and doctors concerned about an asphyxiation game going viral in Florida.

At the time of the post, the condition for the child who was hospitalized for playing the "sleeper" game has not been released. Business Insider has reached out to the Manchester Police and will update if we hear back.

Billionaires and millionaires are going nuts with their personal staffs

Got a billion dollars? Or a few dozen million? Then it might be time for you to set up a family office with a staff of uber-niche personal assistants – and there are a lot of people out there to help you do it.

As the number of billionaires and multimillionaires grows, so does the industry of running their personal and professional lives, reports Bloomberg's .

Via private companies that often employ 50 people or more, they hire everything from Wall Street-trained money managers to personal archivists to yacht captains, Collins reported.

The business of connecting these specialists to the ultra-wealthy is growing too. Aston Pearl works with single-family offices worth $400 million or more, and said they're always in demand of employees "who can be trusted to keep the families' private lives confidential," according to Bloomberg.

But seriously, the people they're hiring are crazy. They range from college advisers to Cybersecurity experts to private chefs who earn up to $200,000 – and, of course, highly-experienced chiefs of staff. They hire ex-Navy Seals and Swat operators for personal security, and ex-Secret Service or FBI agents to guard their homes.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen reportedly has a personal staff of 500 people, 17 of which are dedicated to managing his personal investment portfolio.

RANKED: The top 10 restaurants on tech campuses, where employees chow down for free

caffe macs

Silicon Valley's perk-filled campuses are the stuff of legends.

With a huge variety of free or cheap food available at all times of the day, tech companies' cafeterias are arguably the best perk of all.

But which tech company has the best food? Foursquare helped us compile a list of the tech cafeterias with the most satisfied customers.

To determine the ranking, Foursquare's data science team used a set of algorithms to calculate a "sentiment score." The sentiment score represents how many likes a cafeteria received, as well as whether the tone of the tips were generally positive or negative.

The more positive the sentiment score, the better it did in Foursquare's ranking.

Foursquare's own Fat Denny's cafeteria was excluded from the analysis.

#10 GOOGLE: Tetsuwan Atom Cafe

Googlers can enjoy free ramen and sushi at this campus cafe.

One favorite dish is a miso ramen served with pork, mushrooms, jalapeños, kimchi, and seaweed.

According to one Foursquare tip, Tetsuwan Atom used to be a secret cafe reserved for people working on Android, but now it's open to everyone at Google.

#9 LINKEDIN: InCafe

LinkedIn employees love the weekly specials at their campus cafeteria.

"I don't think I've ever had anything that isn't cooked perfectly here,"LinkedIn engineer Jon Bringhurst writes on Foursquare.

There's also a jukebox you can control with an app called Rockbot.

#8 APPLE: Caffè Macs - Results Way

This outpost on Apple's campus has "quality ingredients and reasonable prices," according to Foursquare user Rahul Sarathy.

The breakfast is delicious, and you can get apples for free.

Here's a glimpse of Bill Gates enjoying his 'guilty pleasure:' a massive private jet

bill gates

The world's richest man, Bill Gates, probably doesn't worry too much about money. But he does, on occasion, feel a little guilty about spending it.

He has called his private jet his "guilty pleasure" and "his big splurge,"on multiple Reddit Ask-Me-Anything sessions.

You might wonder why owning a plane feels like a guilty splurge to Gates, given that he's constantly jetting around the world, and he has some pretty demanding security needs.

Maybe the answer is because the jet is massive.

As part of his somewhat confidential, unofficial trip to the Philippines earlier this month, the local TV news station got a glimpse of him and wife Melinda getting onto a private jet and taking off. You can really see how big this private plane is:

Some news reports also said that the Gates entourage brought a helicopter on that trip, but the Gates Foundation never confirmed that. The whole trip was a bit under the radar, leading to reports that the country's president snubbed the billionaire by not meeting with him. But apparently, the Gates weren't on a political social call and weren't interested in a meeting. They were reportedly paying a visit to the International Rice Research Institute, as part of research they support on highly nutritious hybrid grains of rice.

It has been widely reported that Gates' plane is a Bombardier BD-700 Global Express that cost $40-ish million and seats up to 19 people. We can only imagine what it costs to fly this plane between jet fuel and crew.

Here's another video of that type of jet.

A new trend has tons of women cleaning out their closets until they're left with only 33 things

COURTNEY carver project 333

In 2010, Courtney Carver realized she simply had too many clothes.

“I remember thinking, ‘we have to do something about this closet,’” she told Business Insider. “I was decluttering my entire life and documenting it on my website Be More With Less, and my closet seemed to be a hotspot. It really started as a personal challenge — with all the clutter in the closet, I had no idea even what my style was.”

But instead of selling or donating just a few items, Carver decided she would do a complete overhaul and only allow herself to keep 33 clothing items for an entire three month season.

That included shoes, outerwear, clothing, accessories, and jewelry.

Capsule Items Fall 2014 project 333“I did a rough count of 33 items — it would cover four pairs of shoes, and this many shirts, this many pants, etc.,” explained Carver. She kept her favorite pieces that were flattering and fit her best, and decided she would not allow herself to shop or buy new clothes for three months unless she switched an item out with something else: If she bought a new shirt, she’d have to get rid of another one.

She began to document the process on a new website she called Project 333— 33 items of clothing for three months. Carver called it her “capsule wardrobe.”

Since then, capsule wardrobes have spread across America and around the world. “There are people in almost every state in the US and in many, many other countries making capsule wardrobes,” Carver said. “It’s interesting to see that over-shopping is a problem for us here, but it’s also an international issue.”

LAURA blanton lovely laura lifeOne capsule wardrobe-convert is blogger Laura Blanton of The Lovely Laura Life who’s based in Southwest Ohio. She was inspired to start a capsule wardrobe after coming across Project 333 as well as another popular capsule wardrobe blog called Un-Fancy by Caroline Joy Rector.

“I liked the idea of minimizing my wardrobe, especially because I didn’t like my spending habits,” Blanton told Business Insider. “I had no idea how much I was spending on clothes, but I knew it was definitely too much and didn’t line up with priorities in my life.”

But Blanton’s capsule wardrobe hit a snag a month later.

summer capsule wardrobe tops and jackets lovely laura life“After I started, I found out I was pregnant,” Blanton told us. “So I was building these seasonal maternity capsules and it was like the three different phases of pregnancy."

Though it was intimidating, Blanton stuck with her capsule wardrobe through all phases of her pregnancy. She is even planning to expand the idea to a yearly capsule wardrobe of 75 pieces (or less) because of the unpredictability of Midwest seasons. “I’m still in the building phase and I have a master list of what I want to attain to keep me focused,” she said.

The capsule wardrobe movement can be tied to a growing minimalistic trend in the fashion community.

Take for instance Marie Kondo and her wildly popular book “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.” A celebrity in Japan, Kondo’s entire premise is similar to the capsule wardrobe, but on a macro scale — only surround yourself by the things that bring you joy or make you the happiest, whether that’s your clothing or household mementos.

Carver even wrote a blog post on Project 333 about "Kondo-ing" her capsule wardrobe.

miranda kahl wardrobe, picThen there’s Matilda Kahl, a 27-year-old art director in New York, who has gone viral after sharing her story about wearing the same outfit to work for three years

“I have realized how much more efficient, productive, and happy I can be when I don’t let myself get distracted by the small things in life,” Kahl told Business Insider. “The uniform has become a great everyday reminder that I (and only I) decide what is important.”

She said wearing the same outfit keeps her from having creative fatigue when she’s working during the week — something Carver agreed with strongly.

“It’s becoming more and more mainstream,” Carver said of minimalistic wardrobes. “All creatives like to express themselves through what they wear, but they’re finding they are better able to focus their creative energies when they’re not thinking about how to create the perfect look.”

Ultimately, making a capsule wardrobe is about finding clarity in your style and life in general. Both Blanton and Carver said that it has helped them stop impulse shopping and uncovered their own personal sense of fashion.

“I don’t have to give a lot of attention to what I’m going to wear,” Carver said. “I’m saving time and money, and I find that with dressing with less, I get to wear my favorite things every day.”

a small snapshot of some of laura blanton's favorite pieces

If you’re just getting started building a capsule wardrobe, here’s some of their best advice:

1. Start by getting rid of everything you don’t love

“I think we all need to figure out what works best for us,” Carver said. “Get rid of the excess and start with the bare bones.”

Put the clothes that don’t fit you, you haven't worn in a while, or that you know you don't love into a separate box and store them away for the first three months of your capsule wardrobe.

When you pull them out later on, chances are you’ll realize that they don’t fit your style or body type, and you’ll wonder why you were holding onto them in the first place.

2. Create a master list of things you need

Look at what’s left in your closet after you purge, and then make a list of everything you need to buy, finding inspiration on Pinterest or blogs. Try and think about dual-purpose clothing items that you can layer in the fall and winter or wear alone in the summer.

“Some seasons I’ll have less than 33 items,” Carver told us. “Especially in the summer when I don’t need to count extra outerwear like hat, gloves, and things like that.”

3. Try to do all your shopping at once

Once you have your master list, do all of your shopping at once to fill the gaps and missing pieces — this will negate the need to impulse shop because you’ll know you’re simply not allowed to buy something new for the next three months.

If this doesn’t seem doable or you love thrifting, Blanton suggested giving yourself a one week rule. “I force myself to at least wait one week before I think about it again,” she said. “If you avoid it long enough, there’s not such a strong desire and you can be more logical."

4. Be lenient with yourself

Some people like to follow rules for their capsule wardrobe like Carver to prove to themselves they can do it. Others like Blanton prefer to not be so strict with her wardrobe.

“All three of my capsules were different numbers,” she said. “I started out with 50 because I differentiated between my work wardrobe and my everyday wardrobe. But after I did that first wardrobe I realized it was way more than it needed to be so I downsized to around 35.”

Ultimately, the goal of a capsule wardrobe is not to follow a set of arbitrary rules, but to be more intentional with your life.

5. Jump right in — the hardest part is the fear of starting

“The biggest struggle was before I started and it was the fear of not having enough,” Carver said. “But all of these imaginary things I worried about like running out of clothes or people at work noticing, none of them happened.”

The hardest part is always getting started. If you want to build a capsule wardrobe, just do it.

The 5 best coffee shops in Reykjavik

$

0

Iceland is known for its incredible natural landscape, but many are not aware that it has a vibrant capital city. Reykjavik is home to some great options for food, shopping, and nightlife.

And since there are no international coffee chains like Starbucks on the island, there are also plenty of amazing local cafés. As a Reykjavik native, I can personally recommend a few of my favorites.

1. Reykjavik Roasters

Formerly known as Kaffismiðjan Islands, Reykjavik Roasters has the best-quality coffee you will find in town. Since it opened in 2008, it’s been widely regarded as the best café for its superior coffee and friendly atmosphere. The shop is decorated in a minimal Scandinavia style, except for the bright blue roaster.

Kárastígur 1, Reykjavík

 2. Café Babalú

Café Babalú is quite possibly my favorite spot in all of Reykjavik. The café sits inside a brightly painted yellow house, which has two floors. On the first you can sit in booths while eating homemade cakes, and then an old winding staircase takes you to the top floor, which is more like an attic. There are bizarre decorations everywhere, and plenty of games to pick up.

The best part of the little café is the balcony — it’s always a perfect spot to hang out with friends on a warm day.

Plus, the staff is always nice and helpful.

Skólavörðustígur 22

3. Mokka Café

A photo posted by Andy Tye (@andytye) on Apr 21, 2014 at 10:25am PDT

Mokka is the oldest coffee house in Reykjavik, and it served the first espresso on the island. The shop opened in 1958 and has changed very little since then. The little café is filled with a nostalgic atmosphere and is decorated in an art deco style with vintage wood paneling, red carpets, and brown leather booths.

It’s incredibly tiny, but in the summers they put a few small tables outside. If you’re lucky enough to snag a spot, it’s a perfect place to eat their amazing waffles while people-watching on the busy shopping street.

Skólavörðustígur 3A

4. Kaffitár

Kaffitár
is technically a chain coffee shop, and you will find multiple locations scatter all across Reykjavik. But the local chain is credited with being the beginning of the high-quality coffee culture in town.

The café opened in 1990, and the shop became so popular that there are now eight locations around the city (and two in the airport). Kaffitár is pretty much a safe bet wherever you are — the service and coffee quality are always good.

The best location is downtown, on Bankastræti.

Bankastræti 8

5. Stofan

A photo posted by Haaken (@haakenreed) on Apr 6, 2015 at 1:19pm PDT

Stofan translates as “living room” — and the place is decorated like someone's living room. There are huge sofas and lounge chairs scattered across the two floors.

It has a limited coffee selection, but it’s a great place to camp out for a few hours.

Aðalstræti

BONUS: Puffin Coffee

This isn’t technically a coffee shop; it’s a guy serving coffee from his kitchen window, but it’s another reason why Reykjavik is one of my favorite cities. Sverrir Rolf Sander serves espressos, lattes, iced c
offee, and more from his apartment on Baldursgata. He occasionally has baked goods.

The coffee is free, but Sander accepts donations for charity. The store hours are a bit off, though, because they are basically just whenever he happens to be home. For updates on his opening hours, you can follow him on Twitter.

Sewol ferry

A year ago Thursday, a ferry carrying 476 people sank off the coast of Incheon, near Seoul, South Korea, during a routine trip to the island of Jeju.

In all, 295 people aboard the Sewol perished, many of them high-school students and teachers who were on a field trip. Many of the bodies still have not been recovered.

Since the disaster, controversy has centered on the South Korean government's response. Some argue the government attempted to whitewash its accountability in the incident; others have called for a thorough investigation.

Parents of the students who died in the catastrophe are still reeling from their loss a year later. Many still keep their children's rooms intact to keep their memories alive. Reuters photographer Kim Hong-Ji visited their homes and documented the families and the rooms.

Huh Heung-hwan (R) and Park Eun-mi, the parents of Huh Da-yoon, a high school student who died in the Sewol ferry disaster. "I haven't thought about anything but finding my daughter. I will never give up until I find her. For a year, every day was like that day, April 16, 2014. The times I laughed about trivial things have became precious moments. I thought living an ordinary life was the easiest thing, but I've realized it is the hardest thing," Park says.

Shin Jum-ja (R) and Jung Soo-beom, mother and younger brother of Jung Hwi-beom, a high school student who died in the Sewol ferry disaster. "Before the accident, my family talked a lot. Now we save our words, trying not to hurt each other. I am eager to see Hwi-beom just once. I wish I could hug him," says Shin.

Lee Sun-mi, mother of high school student Kim Ju-hee. "A thorough investigation has to be conducted. Spring has come and flowers are blossoming, but moms cannot smile. I hope the children who are still missing will be found. I wish I could bring back my daughter. The world after the tragedy is not the place that I had known," she says.

No Man's Fort view

Some people dream of getting married in a castle. For everyone else, there's No Man's Land Fort off the coast of southern England.

It's not a castle – but it's definitely unique.

It's a Victorian-era sea fort that's been completely renovated by AmaZing Venues into a luxury hotel that sleeps 44. There's also an events space.

Being a fort smack dab in the middle of the sea means it has a spectacular 360 degree view of the surrounding water and islands.

And if views aren't your thing, there's the "LaZer Battle Arena," mini golf, hot tubs, fire pits, spa facilities, a cabaret-style bar, shops, and restaurants packed into the space.

Welcome to No Man's Land Fort, an sea fort built in the middle of The Solent straight.

It was built between 1867 and 1880 to defend the island city of Portsmouth from suspected French invasion. The fort is about a two hour drive from central London.

The Victorian-era fort has been completely refurbished by AmaZing Venues for use as a hotel and reception venue.
