Here's how to expertly repair the damage this horrible winter did to your leather shoes

Leather Cleaning

After a long winter of rock salt, dirt, ice, and snow, it's finally time to give your trusty boots a rest.

But before you bury them in the back of your closet, you should be sure they're ready the next time it gets snowy again – because, sadly, the ice and slush will return.

Proper care can dramatically increase the lifespan of your footwear. Well-made shoes can last decades, if cleaned and oiled regularly. This routine maintenance will also increase their effectiveness at repelling cold and water.

Though I used an old pair of boots, most leather shoes can benefit from this sort of treatment – even many styles of women's shoes.

Let me show you how.

For this repair demonstration, I'm using my 4-year-old Chippewa Apache "GQ" boot. These boots have only been oiled once, and are in pretty rough shape. They've seen two long upstate New York winters, as well as two equally rough New York City winters. They were not babied in any way, and are prime candidate for this rejuvenation process.

There's road salt, dirt, and who-knows-what-else caked on. The leather is starting to show signs of age and is a bit dry. However, these boots still have a lot of life left in them. If taken care of properly – which is what we're doing now – I'm confident they could last another 5-10 years.

Yes, I am aware they may need to be resoled soon.

To start, we're first going to "wash" the leather with some leather soap. Leather soap, like the Saddle Soap I used here, is specially designed to clean up dried-out leather hides. Though it's a weird yellowish color, it lathers and foams just like the hand soap you use for your own non-dried out hide.

Executives and celebrities can buy a $230,000 guard dog that speaks 3 languages

Harrison K-9 german shepherd guard dogs

For the billionaire buying a guard dog, why go with a standard pup when you can get one that's trained in three different languages?

It only costs $230,000.

CNBC visited the Harrison K-9 facility, a South Carolina-based dog training company that only sells the most highly trained and intelligent German Shepherds to executives and celebrities.

Harrison K-9 has been in business since the 1970s when founder Harrison Prather began training dogs for law enforcement and the US government. Not long after, he learned there was a market for the über wealthy to have not only a guard dog, but a companion as well.

Harrison K-9 german shepherd guard dogsHe started an intense training course that taught the dogs to not only attack aggressors and protect their owners, but also be good with children and other animals. The goal was to create sweet and loving companion dogs that could — if the situation arose — snap into action.

k9 in action gif

The elite dogs are imported from Germany and taught multiple commands such as “come, heel, sit, down, or stay” in both English and German as well as through special hand signals. They are trained in a variety of places such as office buildings, city streets, parks, vehicles, and even yachts so they won’t become distracted or disoriented in a new environment.

The 25-acre Harrison K-9 training facility has obstacle courses where they teach the dogs to do perimeter searches for the home, bite and hold onto aggressors, and complete agility courses.

Harrison K-9 german shepherd guard dogsTo get one of these sweet pups, prices start at $35,000 and average between $40,000 and $50,000. CNBC points out that some of the more top-of-the-line dogs run over $80,000. They are sold when they’re around two-years-old to make sure they’re mature enough for the field and highly trained.

The most expensive dog Harrison K-9 ever sold was a dog named Julia for $230,000 to a businessman in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Julia was so smart that the head trainer told The New York Times she was almost like a person. “If my daughter Kailee was outside in the woods, I’d say, ‘Julia, where’s Kailee?’, and she’d go out and find her,” she told The Times.

Harrison K-9 german shepherd guard dogs

One thing's for sure — they're loyal. Plus, the company says on its website that having a dog will intimidate criminals far more than security systems and human guards would thanks to its sharp teeth and lack of hesitation to attack.

You can see the current guard dogs that Harrison K-9 is training here. In addition to being extremely expensive, they're also adorable.

Tourists from these countries spend the most when traveling abroad

$

0

The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) just released new data on tourist spending in 2014.

Last year international tourism generated over $1,245 billion around the world. Tourism is obviously a huge moneymaker for countries that are top travel destinations, but some tourists spend more than others.

Unsurprisingly, Chinese people spent the most when traveling abroad, spending a total of $165 billion in 2014. The luxury market has become increasingly dependent on Chinese shoppers, who spend the most at designer stores in top destinations like London. High-end retailers like Tiffany & Co. and Louis Vuitton employ Chinese translators at their stores to stay competitive.

Meanwhile, other emerging markets that used to be big spenders, like Russia and Brazil, spent significantly less last year.

Americans spent $112 billion while traveling abroad last year — that's 7% more than the previous year, perhaps due to a stronger dollar. Germans were also big spenders, spending $92 billion.

Other countries that increased spending on travel last year include the UK (4% more), France (11% more), and Italy (6% more).

See the top five tourism spenders in the chart below.

A decade of observing Earth from space has given us these breathtaking views

The European Space Agency may never have had the glamor of the Apollo missions or space shuttle launches, but they've quietly launched some of the most advanced Earth observation satellites around.

The ESA's Envistat satellite was the largest Earth observation satellite ever built.

Since 2002, it has circled the Earth, collecting invaluable information on our environment and the advancing danger of climate change. Contact with Envistat was suddenly lost in April 2012, but the wealth of information it collected remains.

Every week, the European Space Agency releases a new satellite image taken by Envistat and other Earth-observation satellites launched by ESA and other space agencies. They show incredible places on Earth, from the Sahara Desert to volcanoes in the Congo, in ways we've never seen before.

Clouds sweep across the North Sea in this image from Envistat. Denmark is on the lower right corner and Norway is in the upper center.

This is the Amazon River in the heart of northern Brazil's rainforest. Vegetation has been colored with shades of pink — the darker the color, the denser the vegetation.

7 things successful people do in their 30s

$
0
0

couple new

Your 30s are typically a time of settling down. You can't get away with many of the risks or bad habits that may have characterized your 20s.

We looked through the Quora threads "What is the biggest mistake you made in your 30s and what did you learn from it?" and "What do you regret not doing in your 30s?" in addition to author Mark Manson's "10 Life Lessons To Excel In Your 30s" and noticed recurring messages.

For instance, many 30-somethings focus so much on raising a family and building a career that they neglect important relationships and ignore opportunities they may never get again.

We've collected below the most common advice from those who have already experienced their 30s.

1. They spend time with people who add value to their lives.

Manson collected over 600 responses from readers who have lived through their 30s, and one of the most common pieces of advice was to stop spending time with those who don't treat you well and instead spend more time with loved ones.

"Don't just work. Make memories. The older you get, the harder it is to make meaningful relationships," writes Microsoft product designer Michael Dorian Bach on Quora.

The entrepreneur and blogger James Altucher writes on Quora that you also shouldn't forget that your parents grow older as you do. "When I was 34 I hung up the phone on my dad in an argument and never returned his calls. Six months later he had a stroke and died. A week before that he had emailed me to say hello but I didn't return the email. I'm sorry, Dad."

2. They pursue their loftier aspirations.

Twenty-somethings often begin their careers with big goals that they set aside to settle for a job they're not passionate about. Before they know it, a temporary job becomes a career.

An anonymous poster writes on Quora that the biggest mistake of his or her 30s was to become "addicted to a monthly salary," in the sense that he or she chose job security over career satisfaction.

While it's certainly more difficult to start a business or switch industries when you're 35 as opposed to 25, it's not impossible and may be the right choice.

Vera Wang, for example, didn't enter the fashion industry until she was 40 and now she's one of the world's premier designers.

3. They don't obsess about the future.

Manson recounts that one of the biggest lessons of his 20s was that there's not a magical moment where you start feeling like an adult who has it all figured out. He was happy to learn that his older readers said the same thing about their 30s.

"Unless you are already dead — mentally, emotionally, and socially — you cannot anticipate your life 5 years into the future. It will not develop as you expect. So just stop it. Stop assuming you can plan far ahead, stop obsessing about what is happening right now because it will change anyway, and get over the control issue about your life's direction," his reader going by Thomas writes.

It's healthy to have goals for you and your family, but don't stress out over specifics. Acknowledge that you still have plenty left to learn and that you're going to continue to grow as a person in unexpected ways.

4. They decide whether they want kids or not.

Kids certainly are not for everyone, but the majority of those who wrote to Manson or posted on Quora say they realized that putting off having children for an ideal situation is a bad idea. If you want to have kids, have them before it's too late.

"You don’t have the time. You don't have the money. You need to perfect your career first. They'll end your life as you know it. Oh shut up … Kids are great. They make you better in every way. They push you to your limits. They make you happy. You should not defer having kids," Manson's reader Kevin writes.

bay ridge brooklyn shore promenade bridge runner running park

5. They take care of their health.

With a growing list of responsibilities, one of the first things that can go is making exercise and healthy eating habits a priority. But think of putting forth a little effort in both areas as a long-term investment.

"Be healthy. That is priority 1. Don't get into your 30s being slow and tired all the time. It sucks," Michael Dorian Bach writes on Quora.

Adam Dehner says on Quora that "at 41, I've got a list of physical complaints that might not have come about had I been healthier."

6. They establish a financial foundation for the future.

Hopefully you used your 20s to figure out a way to pay back the student loan debt statistics say you most likely had after graduating, and also started saving. But if you hit 30 and you've set nothing aside, it's not too late. By this point, though, you need to start saving for your retirement.

Altucher writes about the many times in his 30s that he bet practically all of his money on a business venture and then lost all of it. He is doing well now, but he looks back on his failures as the result of recklessness.

Determine what percentage of your paycheck you can easily live without and consider setting up an automatic investment in a 401k and/or other savings accounts.

7. They still enjoy themselves.

And finally, just because you're not in your 20s anymore doesn't mean you need to stop having fun. Bach writes on Quora that he spent most of his 30s chasing money, and it only made him unhappy and more cynical about life.

Quora user Jeff Miller adds that he learned the best times in his 30s were going on dates with his wife and playing with his kids. Among all participants, there was a recurring theme that none of the money you work hard to make matters if you're not enjoying life.

I was having an incredibly hard time meditating until I started using this simple method that changed my life

$

If you do a Google Image Search for "meditation," you get bombarded with serenity. Mountaintops, beaches, and sunsets take over your browser window.

Like in the below screenshot.

meditation GIS

While the stuff of inspiring stock photography, all these beautiful young people sitting calmly in beautiful places do little to convey the actual experience of meditation practice. In my five years of meditating nearly every day, I've never had a session where I immediately felt at ease with the world.

Instead, there's always the mental chatter — what to cook for dinner, what projects are due at work, whether or not I'll go on a second date with that girlEven if I'm on top of some beautiful vista (like my roof in Brooklyn), that voice in my head will still insist on starting out a sit with a lot of gossip.

And that's where a super simple mindfulness technique taught by the renowned meditation teacher Pema Chodron is so helpful.

It's actually two parts:

• I try to anchor my attention on the sensations of breathing. In the same way that a sommelier attunes herself to noticing the various aspects of a sip of wine, I try to fully attend to the experience of breathing — the texture of my clothes, the movement of air from my nose. Once you take the time to appreciate it, you realize that your lungs do an awful lot of movement when they fill and empty of air to keep you alive.

• When I realize that my mind has started wandering away into some argument I had three years ago or a deadline I have coming up tomorrow, I say to myself thinking. As in, oh, I'm thinking right now, better return to my breath. I try to do this with a light touch — play the role of the nurturing parent rather than the punitive parent.

It's subtle stuff.

While you might not realize it, there's a skill slowly, slowly being learned here. As one of my favorite Buddhist teachers Ethan Nichtern, author of "the Road Home," has said, it's a meta-cognitive skill — every time we say "thinking" when we notice we're thinking, we're strengthening our ability to spot when our minds are getting lost.

And since it's a skill, it takes time to learn. You can't be expected to excel at the violin the first time you pick the instrument up. Same thing with meditation. But unlike practicing violin, practicing meditation won't be excruciating for the people who live with you.

This woman just became the greatest American female chess player in history

$
0
0

Irina Krush

Irina Krush won her seventh US Chess Championship this past weekend in St. Louis. In doing so, she notched her fourth consecutive US title and became without question the best American woman player of her generation and, really, in history.

It didn't come easy for Krush. Although she was the only Grandmaster on the women's side of the 12-player, 11-round tournament, she slipped back in the standings early and had to win four games in a row to set up an opportunity to snag the title with a draw in her final game (with the white pieces) against Katerina Nemcova.

In retrospect, however, Krush's win was easier than her victory last year, when she defended her title in tie-breaker rounds.

This year, her run began with a decisive win over Annie Wang, at age 12 the youngest player in the field. Wang became a Master at age 11, a pretty stunning achievement. Her presence in the US Championship was extra-special for me because she's from Southern California – where my family and I used to live – and has worked with an organization there called Beyond Chess that my son, James, has also spent some time with.

But she was no match for Krush, who won her first US Championship when she was 14, making her the youngest woman winner ever. Krush commented that she'd like to keep on competing, perhaps challenging the record of Gisela Gresser, a 9-time champion, with titles in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s.

Interestingly, while there are many more male GMs and highly ranked male players, we now have plenty of women in the game – and there's no reason why over time women and men couldn't more frequently play each other at the top levels. In some tournaments, they already do (Krush's GM title, by the way, is the equivalent of a man's – she isn't a "Woman Grandmaster" or WGM, due her high rating, and its worth noting that the GM title has been gender-neutral for decades).

Krush's comment about Gresser was classy and demonstrated the Ukranian-born GM's grasp of chess history (she came to the US when she was 4 and now hails from Brooklyn). Of course, women's chess in Krush's era is a lot more demanding that when Gresser played – the talent pool is deeper, players start a lot younger, the coaching is more intense, and computer analysis enables players to be far more deeply prepared than in the past.

For Krush, now 31, the obvious question is, "Can she contend for the World Championship crown?" That title is currently held by  Mariya Muzychuk of Ukraine, although she captured it through a "knock-out" tournament format that saw the previous World Champ, Hou Yifan of China, decline to play.

Krush is in the top 30 in the world, but although women's chess has grown by leaps and bounds over the past decade, there isn't a global circuit for female players that's as well established as there is for men. Krush is known for her contributions to U.S. international team titles, but her ranking is also significantly below that of the women in the world top 10.

In the US Championship, held at the stupendous Chess Club & Scholastic Center of St. Louis, Krush stumbled early, with a loss to Nazi Paikidze, a 21-year-old who ended up in a second-place tie (Paikidze is from the former Soviet republic of Georgia and only switched her affiliation recently, when she came to US to play for the strong chess team at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County).

I won't go through the entire game, just show the final position. There wasn't much Krush could do about that phalanx of white pawns marching down the center of the board – especially given that her black rook on a6 is unable to move across the 6th rank:

Screen Shot 2015 04 15 at 12.00.15 PM

Obviously, Krush cut a swath through much of the rest of the field, but she did get outmaneuvered by Paikidze, something that doesn't fit Krush's style, which is to play powerful chess, exerting strategic dominance over her opponents while looking for tactical possibilities.

She might have missed her longtime rival, Anna Zatonskih, but she won the tournament by a full point (8.5/11), vindicated her ranking and position in the field as the favorite, and bolstered her legend.

But don't think she's some kind of scary juggernaut. Although she's intimidating, she has a shaggy, slightly punk edge, a pile of not-always-too-carefully arranged hair spilling everywhere and a fashion sense that suggests a Sleater-Kinney groupie more than a Chess Life cover girl (which doesn't mean she can't pull off a dress with aplomb – see below). She is, in a word, cool.

And with her win in St. Louis, she's the best female American chess player we've even seen.

The amazing story of how the Aston Martin DB10 became James Bond's latest ride

$

Aston Martin DB10 James Bond SideAston Martin's handcrafted sports cars are world famous for their power, beauty, and soul.

But Aston has also enjoyed a 50-year run as the official wheels of the world's most famous super spy — James Bond.

As 007 gears up for his next adventure "Spectre," this tradition continues with the brand new Aston Martin DB10. But there's one major difference — the DB10 is for James Bond only.

In fact, the car was developed with the input of director Sam Mendes and the film's producers.

"It's never been done like this before," Aston Martin chief creative officer Marek Reichman told Business Insider. " For a movie character to have a major manufacturer create a car just for him is really quite special."

But the story of how the DB10 became the latest Bond car is even more incredible.

According to Reichman, Mendes and producer Barbara Broccoli dropped by the design studio to have a look at a production Aston the company had been preparing for the movie. However, as the filmmakers were examining the car, a sketch hanging on the studio wall caught Mendes' eye.

Aston Martin DB10 RomeReichman told the director the car in the sketch didn't actually exist. To which Mendes replied, "Great, could we make that just for James Bond?"

The result of that question is a limited run of 10 special James Bond Astons to be used exclusively for the film. Which sadly means that no one outside of the production team will have the chance to drive the car.

Fortunately, according to Reichman, elements of the DB10 design may make their way into future production Astons, as the company looks to revamp its whole lineup over the next five years.

James Bond's 24th adventure hits theaters on November 6, 2015.

Check out the fleet of Aston Martin DB10s on set in Rome.

Flower beard coachella

In recent years, the annual Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival has become as much a fashion show as it is about the music.

This year, trends on the fields included the typical floral headpieces, crazily braided hair, loads of jewelry, and even one floral beard.

But when it's nearly 100-degrees in the desert on the outskirts of Palm Springs, clothing is limited — and sometimes, optional.

Katy Perry (center) rocked a giant, tribal necklace while roaming the VIP area at Coachella with friends.

You can never have on too many jewels at the festival, including on your face.

Boulder Home

A unique home in the affluent community of Scottsdale, Arizona is up for sale.

Sixty percent of the structure is made from huge boulders. The walls, floors, and ceilings alternate between stucco and rock, creating an extremely earthy feel as well as an interesting floorplan.

In fact, the home is so unique, author and former CEO of Neiman Marcus Stanley Marcus once called it ''the most original home in America."

Estately has the listing, asking $4.3 million.

No this isn't just a random rocky outcrop ...

It's actually a house, built right into huge boulders.

The home uses a combination of stucco and boulders to mark its walls and boundaries.
