One Flew South hanger steak

Airport food is often thought of as underwhelming and overpriced.

But airports are changing all that. They're teaming up with top chefs and serving fresh, local cuisine in restaurants that are actually worthy of a visit.

We found 20 amazing dishes that are served at airports all around the world.

From high-end sushi in Tokyo's Narita International Airport to fried cheese curds in Milwaukee's General Mitchell International Airport, you won't believe these dishes came from an airport.

BOSTON LOGAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, US: Legal Sea Foods serves up classic New England dishes like clam chowder and steamers. The Terminal C location has a great breakfast menu, but if you are stopping by later in the day, be sure to try the seafood trio sandwich or a signature crab cake.

NARITA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, TOKYO, JAPAN: Sushi Kyotatsu, located in Terminal 1, has many fans. Some veteran travelers actually plan their trips to make sure they can stop by the restaurant, known for fish that's somewhat pricey but super fresh.

CHICAGO O'HARE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, US: Tortas Frontera, created by star chef Rick Bayless, has three locations in the airport. The Mexican sandwich shop was hailed as the best airport restaurant by Bon Appetit Magazine. Try one of the tortas (Mexican sandwiches), like the Choriqueso, which has chorizo, poblano peppers, avocado, and Jack cheese.

The Audi S4 is $50,000 of old-school driving fun and modern luxury

Audi S4

These days, there's no shortage of high-end sedans that are both luxurious and fun to drive. But there is a shortage of luxurious sports sedans that achieve that fun by directly connecting the driver and machine – in the old-fashioned way, channeling a powerful engine through a manual transmission.

In this sense, the 2015 Audi S4 Quattro – With a 6-speed stick shift! — is something special: a throwback that still feels thoroughly modern. When Audi handed us the keys, we just had to take it for a spin.

In the S4, Audi has achieved a fantastic balance of luxury and performance.

The S4 sits above the standard A4 sedan and below the RS4 Avant, a BMW M3-fighter. Sadly, the RS4 isn't destined for the US market.

Armed with a 6-speed manual transmission, the S4 allowed for old-school gear-shifting enjoyment.

Yahoo has made some progress since Marissa Mayer joined as CEO in July of 2012.

According to a new profile by Fast Company's Harry McCracken, Mayer has set a new tone at the company by encouraging team members to get things done quickly and with limited oversight.

In 2013, a group of 18 engineers was tasked with bringing Yahoo's native ad system up to speed. The group, which called itself Moneyball, had only 45 days to complete the project.

They finished work on the native ad system — now dubbed Yahoo Gemini — in just 43 days.

Mayer then rewarded each of the 18 team members with a free vacation to Hawaii.

"It was challenging, but it really made a difference that the entire company aligned around making this happen in so many different ways," VP of product Enrique Munoz Torres told Fast Company

What it’s really like to live in a New York City apartment with a shower in the kitchen

Alex Kuzoian shower in kitchen

On Monday, the listing for a $1,795 one-bedroom in Manhattan’s Lower East Side with a shower in the kitchen went viral.

And though not an ideal set up, these apartments with showers or bathtubs in the kitchen are not as uncommon as one might expect.

In fact, Business Insider associate video producer Alex Kuzoian currently lives in a similar set up with two other roommates.

“I never really had a problem with it,” he said of the apartment. “The bizarre-ness of it kind of just fades after awhile.”

Kuzoian has been living in his Hell’s Kitchen home for the past four months where he’s paying significantly less than $1,000 a month — extremely affordable for the Midtown Manhattan location where the average rent for a one bedroom is $3,374, according to Reator.com.

Even though the shower is in the common area, Kuzoian says that the lack of privacy isn’t too much of an issue since all of his roommates are on different schedules.

“The most annoying part is just not having a real bathroom,” he said. “We have one sink (the one in the kitchen) and then just a tiny room with a toilet. It would be nice not to have to brush my teeth, shave, and do the dishes in the same sink.”

It’s the act of shaving that really bothers him.

“I don't like to do it over the kitchen sink — plus theres no mirror there anyway — so I stand in front of the mirror that’s attached to my bedroom door and hold a garbage can under my chin,” he said. “That’s why I only shave like once a week.”

But Kuzoian said because the apartment is so affordable, he really doesn’t mind the set up. Plus, because he knew his roommates before he moved in, everyone is already comfortable with one another.

“We don’t have too many guests, mainly because the place is so small — there’s not a lot of room for them to stay,” he said. “It’s usually just our girlfriends or boyfriends.”

He added, “they’re already kind of used to it.”

As for any plus sides of living in an apartment where your shower is in your kitchen, Kuzoian said it’s definitely a “great conversation piece” and that someday he hoped he would be able to look back and get a great story out of his current living situation.

“Being young makes it easier,” he said. “If I were older there's no way I’d tolerate it. But for now, it's just part of the cliche 'NYC experience,’ I guess.”

4 items every modern gentleman needs this spring

$

0

Spring is here. Time to upgrade your wardrobe.

This season, we recommend picking up a linen-cotton suit, a weekend bomber jacket, a "new" going out shirt, and grown up shorts.

We've put together a list of our favorite items from Frank & Oak.

spring style men suitThings start to get hot and sticky come springtime, so we recommend getting a linen blend suit. Linen is extremely breathable, which basically means that you won't sweat through your suit.

Tack on a light colored tie, stylish shades, and a professional briefcase to complete the look.

(A)Laurier Glen Check cotton linen suit jacket, $185; (B)Laurier Glen Check trousers, $105; (C)cotton chambray tie, $36; (D)Illesteva Hundson sunglasses, $220; (E) genuine Italian leather messenger bag, $245.

Screen Shot 2015 04 13 at 3.47.16 PMThe bomber jacket took men's fashion by storm last year — and it hasn't lost its cool yet. For the spring, we recommend checking out a gray option like the one above.

Pair it with some high-top sneakers, sunglasses with colored lenses, and a navy weekend bag.

(A)Kingston bomber jacket, $125; (B)Illesteva Hundson sunglasses, $220, (C)Dylan denim in dark blue, $75; (D)Nylon travel duffel, $125; (E)Apollo leather high top sneakers, $155.

going out shirt men's fashion springFor some reason, guys in the mid-2000's went through a tragic "going out shirt" phase. You know the look: bright stripes shirt, un-tucked, maybe with a tuft of chest hair peaking out. Thankfully, everyone has finally come around.

That being said, we're all for a new version of a going out shirt — a solid, navy or charcoal button down that works for everything from date night to beers with bros.

(A)Cotton snap button shirt in navy, $65; (B)Leather bill fold wallet, $56; (C)Newport chinos, $55; (D)Perforated leather sneakers, $145; (E)Illesteva Leonard sunglasses, $178.

Screen Shot 2015 04 13 at 3.45.04 PM

As soon as temperatures rise, everyone busts out shorts. But just because your knees are showing, doesn't mean you have to look young or sloppy.

Pair the shorts with a white button down and knit pullover. Let the buttondown stick out from under the pullover to add a casual feel.

(A)Funnel neck knit pullover in Deep Well, $55; (B)7.5" Travis Oxford shorts in Alloy, $55; (C)Odessa chambray shirt in off-white, $45; (D)Perforated leather sneakers in navy, $145; (E)Super People sunglasses in beige stone, $150.

We bought a half-kilo of pure caffeine on the internet — the equivalent of 5,000 cups of coffee

We got to try some of the most mouthwatering pastries ever posted to Instagram

$

Anyone who frequently gets lost scrolling through picture after mouthwatering picture of "food porn" on Instagram knows that there is a lot of talent among amateur bakers on social media.

On April 11th, the popular restaurant review website The Infatuation rallied that online talent, inviting those budding pastry chefs to compete in a real-life bake sale. Twenty-five amateur bakers were chosen from a pool of more than 1,500 entries using the hashtag #InfatuationBakeSale — Twitter, Facebook, and email entries were also accepted.

The Infatuation teamed up with Whole Foods Market to help those aspiring bakers to actually get their creations into stores. The winner of the bake sale will meet with the Whole Foods' Local Forager, Elly Truesdell, to learn about what it takes to bring a product to market.

The contestants chosen to showcase their goods did not disappoint — there were some ingenious recipes like chocolate whiskey bombs, roasted banana chocolate chip muffins with espresso ice cream, mini olive oil cakes, fruity pebbles cookies, and many more delicious goods.

We stopped by to see what the next generation of great pastry chefs had cooked up.

Bake Sale Watermarked 22As soon as we got inside, we were given an old-school fanny pack filled with all sorts of goodies. Each guests got eight tokens as currency, so my friend and I pooled our resources to try and test everything.  Bake Sale Watermarked 3The bake sale was held at Canoe Studios in Manhattan. There were 24 vendors set up around the studios selling their sweets. Each baker was required to make a minimum of 250 pieces of their baked goods (and many stayed up all night to do so). Bake Sale Watermarked 5The Cereal Donuts from Sheri Silver were covered in Fruity Pebbles, Frosted Flakes, Cocoa Krispies, and Froot Loops. Bake Sale Watermarked 11The event sold out 500 tickets in just three days — and all the proceeds will go to the charity Cookies for Kids’ Cancer. Bake Sale Watermarked 12The team from Infatuation also encouraged people to post pictures from the event using the hashtag #InfatuationBakeSale— it’s worth checking out for many more pictures of delicious baked goods. Bake Sale Watermarked 8The ladies from Buttah Lovers took home the Infatuation People's Choice Award for their Peach Pie Donuts (and got lots of love for their "donut hate the player" aprons). All voting for the People’s Choice Award was done via Instagram. Bake Sale Watermarked 4These fruity pebbles cookies from The Kitchen of Alex were bizarre and wonderful. Bake Sale Watermarked 13There were baked peach donuts with a butter rum peach glaze sprinkled with pecan toffee crunch. Bake Sale Watermarked 15These Aztec chocolate pies topped off with popcorn were amazing. Bake Sale Watermarked 14There were way too many great choices.  Bake Sale Watermarked 16Catherine Vo won the bake sale with her Azuki red bean and carob cupcakes. Bake Sale WinnerThey were topped off with a green tea coconut whipped cream frosting — and it was amazing. Bake Sale Watermarked 10There was a Bosco photo booth with plenty of fun baking themed props. Bake Sale Watermarked 17There were great sponsors for the event like Allegory Coffee Company, Deep Eddy Vodka, Organic Valley, Wine Awesomeness, and Brooklyn Brewery  — who provided an open bar. Bake Sale Watermarked 20Suffice to say — it was a pretty great sugar high. Bake Sale Watermarked 21For more information on the all the amateur bakers, click here

I just drove the most exciting Buick in years – and yes, you read that right (GM)

$

0

2015 Buick RegalGS 022

Everyone used to think that Buick was an old-person's car.

This is not a shocking statement – Buick was the original General Motors brand and traditionally sat just below Cadillac in the company's hierarchy. GM spent decades cultivating and satisfying Buick owners. When you sell cars to people for decades, some of them are going to get old.

That's a definition of success, not failure.

Still, GM's challenge with Buick 10 years ago was to convince younger folks that one of the car maker's venerable advertising taglines continued to hold true: "Wouldn't you really rather have a Buick?"

Tiger Woods couldn't pull this off. His reign as a Buick pitchman didn't lead to a big boost in sales among younger customers. What did solve the problem, and make Buick in America more than just an ongoing marketing effort for Buick in China (where the brand remains highly respected), was, unsurprisingly, better cars.

Like the Regal GS.

I'd rather have this Buick!

The walkaround

I won't bore you too much with the underpinnings. The 2015 Regal GS that I recently spent a weekend with is based on a German Opel sedan – Opel is GM's main European division – and built in Canada. My test car stickered at $45,515, and it was a thoroughly loaded. All-wheel-drive. Six-speed auto ( you can get a manual version). The engine is a 2-liter turbo 4 that zings out 259 horsepower. Mine was a luxuriant black, deftly accessorized with Buick's signature "ventiports" on the fenders.

The interior was also black, coolly lit by Buick's familiar blue-green instrumentation, a color some might call a futuristic turquoise. This is a nice place to be, for everyone in the car, although taller folks might find the back seats too snug. Beneficially, as the one behind the wheel, you don't feel cut off from passengers, a compliant that some BMWs owners make due to the "cockpit" design of their driver's side.

2015 Buick RegalGS 015

Fun, fun, fun ...

Now the good stuff. This car is, with one notable exception, a pleasure to drive. It's one of those cars that does what does well, and does it well at normal, everyday speeds. It will do 0-60 in just over 6 seconds, which is plenty quick. It has a top speed of some sort, but you really don't need to go there.

So okay, it's not blow-your-doors off fast.

But I'd like to keep my doors, if that's all right with you, thanks very much. But if you have a modest need for speed, a intermittent appetite for velocity, the Regal GS has you covered.

It's also fine to drive on the freeway and fine to take for a spin on winding back roads. Various Volkswagen sedans are in theory meant to invite this type of behavior, but it's not clear to me that anyone has ever carved up a twisting byway in a Jetta. The Regal kind of encourages it, in a way that Buicks simply haven't in the past.

Heck, I was so inspired by driving the Regal GS that I broke out my driving gloves, which I normally reserve for only the snazziest performance rides.

With AWD, the GS can also handle lousy weather. I caught the tail end of some snow in New York, and while we weren't talking vast drifts of the white stuff, the roads were at times slick.Buick Regal GS Driving Gloves

When stuck in traffic, the Regal boasts a satisfying suite of infotainment options, including SiriusXM satellite radio. And like all GM vehicles, the Regal GS has 4G LTE connectivity, supporting a family's worth of wifi-enabled devices. OnStar is also at the ready, should you want directions downloaded quickly and conveniently to the navigation system without having to fiddle for half an hour with the touchscreen inputs.

But I said there was an exception, didn't I?

That's a firm ride

It's not a big deal, but the car feels pretty stiff. You notice this when bumping around uneven Northeastern pavement – pavement that now seems to demand AWD and that increasingly demands AWD bolted onto an SUV. Forget about a sedan – these potholes require ground clearance!

The stiffness is there to signal that this is car tuned for performance, not for toodling around town and taking leisurely weekend jaunts to quiet places for picnics. You can play around with the driving modes – "Sport" and "GS" are your alternatives to the basic setup – but the firm ride is the price of admission.

This is also the price of admission to the near-luxury car segment, increasingly. Luxury cars have steadily become less relaxing to drive over the past decade or so, a trend that can entirely be traced to German sports sedans and their dominance of the market. You might never have to attack a corner with verve and aggression, but the fact that you can in a BMW has got everyone thinking that they need to emulate this presumed virtue.

Of course, for Buick – a brand with the long reputation for selling very docile cars – this is great. Because if you want to put all 259 of the Regal GS's horsepower to work, test the capabilities of its AWD and even slip the transmission into manual mode and shift (sort of) the old-fashioned way, this ride doesn't disappoint. The GS mode serves up a subtly more crisp and responsive experience than Sport, but Sport is perfectly okay if you don't want to get rattled.

No shame on the valet line

Regardless, you'll smile while driving. But you won't scare yourself. And you'll be perfectly comfortable with a daily commute. Keeping the car fueled won't break the bank – combined city/highway MPG is 22, which isn't great but then again this is a near-luxury, near-performance car, not a set of economy wheels.Buick Regal GS Snow

Importantly, looks-wise at the valet line the GS won't make you wish you'd bought one of the usual Teutonic suspects. It might even draw some second glances, something that Buick has been highlighting in TV spots for its current ad campaign.

Buick has been trying to get exactly this sort of brand traction for over a decade. GS versions of the Regal from the 1990s were adequate cars, but they fell short, feeling more like revved-up freeway cruisers that honest-to-goodness sport sedans.

GS stands for "Gran Sport" and is a designation that reaches back to the mid-1960s and is evocative of the car maker's performance heritage, so there's something to live up to there.

With the new Regal GS, Buick and GM have. And for what it's worth, drivers both old and young can appreciate that.

15 heartbreaking drawings by child victims of Nigeria's deadly Boko Haram

hoko baram drawing unicef

April 14 marks one year since Islamist militant group Boko Haram abducted 276 girls from a Nigerian boarding school. While some schoolgirls managed to escape, over 200 are missing, according to a new report from UNICEF.

The girls' disappearance is "only one of endless tragedies being replicated on an epic scale across Nigeria and the region," says Manual Fontaine, UNICEF director for West and Central Africa.

The crisis in the country's northeast, fueled by conflicts between Boko Haram, military forces, and civilian self-defense groups, has forced 800,000 children to flee their homes in search of safety. Many of the displaced find shelter in host communities desperate for basic supplies, clean water, and health and nutrition services.

Haunted by memories of violence and atrocities, the children struggle to forget watching their parents and siblings be slaughtered, or seeing their homes burn to the ground. "They have the right to get their childhoods back," Fontaine says.

At many of the camps, UNICEF uses drawing during psycho-social therapy sessions to help the escaped children open up about what they've seen and endured, and what they miss most. A new awareness campaign, #BringBackOurChildhood, has celebrity Snapchat users recreating the images in the app. You can check out their renditions here.

With permission, we're sharing some of the children's original drawings.

During psycho-social therapy sessions, some children illustrated the trauma they witnessed. Umar, a child refugee in Chad, remembers assailants going into his school and shooting at children in several classrooms.

Another child refugee, Bulus, fled to Cameroon after the Boko Haram burned down his house. "We lost everything, even our mango tree which was on the court," Bulus says.

Sona, a child refugee in Cameroon, remembers the Boko Haram bombing the local church while the pastor was still inside.

This website reveals the most powerful passports in the world

Screen Shot 2015 04 14 at 1.59.30 PM

Arton Capital's Passport Index’ is an interactive website which “collects, displays and ranks the passports of the world."

Using data from the International Air Transportation Agency (IATA) as well as individual travelers, the site's creators crunched the numbers and determined a passports' Visa Free Score, or the number of countries that allow its holder to enter without a visa or obtain one upon arriving. The higher the Visa Free Score, the higher the "Passport Power Rank."

Unsurprisingly, the US and UK are the most widely accepted in the world with 147 nations opening their doors to travelers visa-free. Tied for second place are France, Germany, and South Korea, with 145 countries. Nations in conflict like the Palestinian Territories and South Sudan bring up the rear.

The site also features a map where users can click on a country to see the corresponding passport. If power rankings aren't your thing, you can sort the passports by color.

As part of an ongoing, interactive project, users are also invited to contribute pictures of their passports to make a more complete database.

Check out the range of passport colors from all over the world below or visit the website here.

Volvo's new luxury SUV will use crystal Champagne glasses to take on Range Rover

Volvo XC90 Excellence

Volvo's second generation XC90 SUV is taking the safety-centric brand into some unfamiliar territory— ultra luxury. For the 2015 Shanghai Auto Show, the Swedish automaker rolled out a Range Rover-esque version of its new SUV, called the "XC90 Excellence."

“This is our new flagship car,” Volvo senior vice president of design Thomas Ingenlath said. “We have created the ultimate experience of Scandinavian luxury."

Although you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between the Excellence and its less excellent siblings from the outside, the interior is where the upscale SUV's aspirations become apparent.

At the heart of this newfound poshness is the XC90's private jet-style rear cabin, which the automaker describes as a "Scandinavian sanctuary."

So what does such a sanctuary entail?

How about ambient lighting to set the mood, a retractable control touchscreen, folding tray tables, a refrigerator with bottle and glass holders, a heated and chilled cup holder and to top it all off, handmade crystal glasses by Orrefors.

Volvo XC90 Excellence

That's in addition to the ventilated and massaging captains chairs that have replaced the standard XC90's more utilitarian bench-style seats.

"What we have designed is amongst the best rear seat experience available in a luxury car,” Mr. Ingenlath said.

In fact, the whole car is designed to effortlessly glide down the road. Heck, the SUV even has Pirelli noise-canceling tires!

So why is Volvo going to such trouble to build a more aristocratic Swedish SUV when it's supposed to be a company built on safety, technology, and utilitarianism?

According to Mr. Ingenlath, the luxurious flourishes create a "superlative environment for relaxed comfort or doing business."

Volvo XC90 Excellence

Since Volvo is the crown jewel of China's Geely Automotive, the XC90 gives the company a massive opportunity to penetrate the the Chinese luxury SUV market that has thus far been dominated by German and Japanese rivals.

Chinese consumers don't have the same memories that Western customers have of Volvo as a seller of boxy station wagons – an unpretentious, understated anti-luxury brand. As a result, an uber-luxury model, such as the Excellence, only reinforces Volvo's stature in China as an upscale option.

Volvo XC90 Excellence

Volvo hasn't yet announced the engine choices for the Excellence, which is expected to hit the global market later this year.

But photos of the show car indicate that it's a T8, which is powered by a 2.0-liter supercharged and turbocharged inline 4-cylinder engine that's paired with an electric motor hybrid drive system to produce 400 horsepower.

There's also no word how big a dent the XC90 Excellence will make in your wallet. Although the base XC90 starts at just under $49,000 in the US.
