Why In-N-Out burger won't expand to the East Coast

$

in-n-out burger

In-N-Out, the cult favorite burger joint of the West Coast, has been teasing the East Coast with rumors of expansion for years.

The fast-food retailer has slowly expanded eastward over its 65-year lifetime to Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and more recently Texas. The company has also been holding "pop-up shops" around the world, where burgers tend to sell out within minutes.

All signs seemingly point to a plan for expansion.

But four major factors make it highly unlikely that East Coasters will get to experience the joy of an In-N-Out in their neighborhood anytime soon.

1. Quality control: There are no freezers or microwaves in In-N-Out restaurants because the company has a strict policy of serving its food fresh. Therefore, all locations must be close to the company's distribution facilities, which are in Baldwin Park, California, and Dallas.

"At In-N-Out Burger, we make all of our hamburger patties ourselves and deliver them fresh to all of our restaurants with our own delivery vehicles," In-N-Out vice president of planning and development Carl Van Fleet told Business Insider. "Nothing is ever frozen. Our new restaurant locations are limited by the distance we can travel from our patty-making facilities and distribution centers."

In-N-Out owner Lynsi Torres says the burger chain's quality is what sets it apart from competitors.

"We're not changing things like many other companies do," she told the Orange County Register in a February 2013 interview. "That's kept us unique; it's kept the customers feeling like we're not a sellout."

2. Exclusivity: Everything has more appeal when it's not available to everyone, and the exclusivity of In-N-Out is what has helped the restaurant gain such a rabid following of fans.

In response to pleading from a local politician for an In-N-Out to open in Denver, Van Fleet made it clear the company was not planning to expand farther east.

"You continue to give us the biggest compliment possible with your efforts to interest us in Colorado," he wrote in a letter obtained by The Denver Post. "That said, at this time, we're still not looking to add a sixth state and we're just focusing our growth efforts in the five states where we currently operate."

3.Competition: The East Coast has numerous burger joints that would offer tough competition for In-N-Out, including Shake Shack and Five Guys.

4. No franchising: In-N-Out is a family-owned company that doesn't believe in franchising. A large-scale expansion without franchising would require a massive amount of up-front capital from the company.

"In-N-Out remains privately owned and the Snyder family has no plans to take the company public or franchise any units," the company reaffirms on its website.

The 18 best snacks to eat at your desk

Sabra Hummus

What you eat all day doesn't just impact your health and weight — it affects your productivity, too.

High fat, high sugar meals and snacks make us sleepy and have low energy, says Lisa De Fazio, a healthy lifestyle expert and registered dietitian. But thanks to things like boredom, lack of time, and sleep deprivation, people tend to make bad eating decisions during the workday.

Luckily, there are plenty of quick, easy, and inexpensive healthy snack options.

Almonds

Almonds are a great source of protein and healthy fat that is satisfying. "They contain nine essential nutrients; have the highest rate of proteins when compared to other nuts; have the highest rate of fiber (3.5g per 23 pieces) when compared to other nuts; are rich in Vitamin E (23 pieces provide 35% of the daily value of Vitamin E); and contain monounsaturated fats that help increase HDL levels," explains Nicole Maftoum, a Lebanese clinical dietitian

Low-fat popcorn

This low-calorie snack will satisfy your craving for something salty and crunchy, and it’s also a good source of fiber, De Fazio says.

Fresh fruit

Fruits are packed with vitamins and minerals, and are full of great natural sweetness, Maftoum says. "They are also a great source of antioxidants needed for a stronger immune system and a better performance at work."

The most beautiful new library buildings in America

$

The library is not dead.

That sentiment is very clear when you look at these spectacular new designs for centers of learning and continuing education, all of which were built around North America in the last year. The American Institute of Architects, partnering with the American Library Association, chose these six buildings as the best libraries built in 2014 and awarded them the 2015 Library Building Awards.

From their spectacularly designed reading rooms to their apparent architectural beauty, it's clear to see why.

Cedar Rapids Public Library, OPN Architects

CRPL_Main Street Studio (9)

The new library in the city of Cedar Rapids, Iowa was built in response to a flood that destroyed the existing structure.

The new building was designed to be the center of the small city's urban core, which it archived with aim to look “more like an Apple Store and less like the DMV.” It was also constructed in such a way as to keep operating costs low and be much more environmentally friendly than the old structure.

Slover Library, Newman Architects with Tymoff + Moss

Slover_A

The new Slover Library in Norfolk, Virgina is actually a restoration of the 115-year-old original library structure, called the Seaford Building, as well as an addition of a 7-story glassy tower.

The old building provides a home for historical documents dating back to European colonization and the new building provides a "porous" welcoming hall for all visitors.

This library, set in Little Rock, Arkansas, is much more than a library.

It was created as "the place to be" for children of the community, and as a sign of urban renewal, and a literal bridge to ease the town's neighborhoods divided by Interstate 40.

In addition to multiple learning areas for children, it also has a performance space, greenhouse, vegetable garden, and arboretum.

University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth's library has been given a facelift, making it the center piece of the college's campus.

UMass Dartmouth is famous for its many buildings built in the brutalist style, but Carney Library has lost much of its concrete and gained a new glass facade. According to school officials, the library is getting three times as many visitors as before.

Built on the site of the former Mission Drive-in Theater in San Antonio, Texas, the new Mission Branch Library incorporates plenty of  local touches that "reference the materials found on the adjacent Mission San Jose and convey the cultural history of the site."

Some of these include "locally made barrel vaulted clay tiles " and "San Saba Sandstone wainscot that wraps the entire perimeter of the white stucco walls."

The new community library in Vancouver, Washington was built to be a central part of the master planned civic district of the state's fourth largest city.

Its huge atriums and "curtain glass" walls surround spacious lounges, study pods, and an interactive children's early learning center. On top of the building sits a rooftop garden and terrace. Benjamin Benschneider_3.S

This guy has gamed the airline industry so he never has to pay for a flight again

$

Scott Keyes

When I spoke with Scott Keyes, he was on a 10-hour layover in Dallas kicking back in the Centurion Lounge, where American Express has provided its members with free food and drinks, high-speed Wi-Fi, free spa services, and even its own shower suite.

“It’s just a day in the office in here essentially,” the 28-year-old Keyes told Business Insider. “I’ve got a nice work space, food, drinks, some Wi-Fi. This is like this whole other world.”

Keyes, a reporter for Think Progress, gained access to the lounge as a perk from one of his 25 credit cards. The card, an American Express Platinum, typically has an annual fee of $450, but Keyes managed to get it waived for the first year by taking advantage of an online deal. After that, he’ll either try to get the next year’s fee waived as well, or he’ll simply downgrade the card to something that doesn't carry a fee.

This is nothing new for Keyes, who told us that he uses his massive collection of credit cards to gain points, frequent flyer miles, and plenty of other member perks all the time. He then turns around and uses those perks on vacations like his upcoming trip that will take him20,000 miles on 21 flights— all for free.

This isn't luck. Keyes is somewhat of an expert on traveling for little to no cost, not unlike extreme couponers who put incredible amounts of time, energy, and thought into making sure they never pay a penny more than they have to when making purchases.

After jealous friends kept asking him how he does it, Keyes decided to write his e-books “How To Fly For Free” and “How To Find Cheap Flights.” He even made an email list to send friends updates on any amazing travel deals he comes across on Twitter or his RSS feed.

scott keyes itineraryThe epic world trip spans 13 countries — Mexico, Nicaragua, Trinidad, St. Lucia, Grenada, Germany, Czech Republic, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Greece, Macedonia, Lithuania, and Finland — over the next two months. Total airfare is 136,500 frequent flyer miles plus a few small taxes, such as ‘airport use’ fees, that are all under $20 per flight.

Aside from those taxes, Keyes will be paying exactly $0 for his trip, including his hotel stays.

He told Business Insider that it took around 10 to 15 hours to plan his itinerary, including finding flights that will use his miles, choosing between airlines, and avoiding “fuel surcharges” at all costs.

Scott KeyesKeyes had been living and working for the past year in Oaxaca, Mexico, but now that he’s returning to the US, he realized it was the perfect opportunity to spend some time traveling before jumping back into a full-time job.

“It’s tough when you have a job and you have to ask your boss for time off,” Keyes told Business Insider. “You only have a limited time off and then you spend a lot of that traveling. I figured while I’m in a position where I don’t have a 9-to-5, I might as well take advantage.”

Scott KeyesThis is not the first time Keyes has gone on an incredibly cheap getaway for next to nothing. He has flown to Milan for $130, gone to Galapagos for $45, and visited Norway and Belgium for around $350 instead of the typical $1,000.

“It’s not necessarily easy or intuitive for beginners,” he told Business Insider about finding bargain flights. “But the good news is that because if you do a little bit of leg work — learn how to get a few miles and how to use them well — you can start to travel really, really well.”

Scott KeyesKeyes has a few methods to procure his frequent flyer miles, including opening new credit cards that award miles or points, letting airlines know when there’s a problem with his flight, and not being afraid to get bumped if a flight is full.

He also uses Award Wallet and a detailed spreadsheet to keep organized so he never misuses his credit cards or loses track of his points and miles. In fact, since he started accruing cards, Keyes insists his credit score has actually increased just by virtue of handling his credit responsibly.

Scott KeyesAnd when it comes to finding cheap trips, Keyes has an RSS reader and Twitter list chock-full of blogs and websites like Airfarewatchdog and The Flight Deal that he skims to see if there are any “mistake fees” or cheap flights available.

The key, he said, is flexibility.

“If your ultimate goal is to be able to find as cheap a flight as possible and go somewhere cool for not much money then starting with an open, blank slate and going wherever there’s a cheap flight right now is going to be your best bet,” he told us.

Scott KeyesSince starting his frequent-flyer-mile journey, Keyes has been to 30 countries — this next trip will make that count 42 — and flown 354,000 miles or roughly 14.3 times around the earth.

“The moon is only 250,000 miles away,” Keyes laughed. “I’ve only got 150,000 more to go until I can get back from the moon."

As for his upcoming trip, Keyes said he’s most excited to visit a “beer spa” in Prague.

“I don’t quite understand it because I don’t speak Czech, but my understanding from pictures is that you just go and soak in beer,” he told us. “And who can complain about that?"

This tiny article of clothing solves every man's worst summer footwear issue

Sperry sock less

Summer is a time for going sockless.

Sperry's, moccasins, and even your trusty white plimsolls all call for the sockless look in summer — a look that's supposed to be effortless.

But anyone who has ever tried knows that going sockless comes with a steep cost.

The problem: feet sweat.

Walking around in canvas or leather shoes all day without any type of protection is a recipe for disaster. At the end of the day, you inevitably will have disgusting, smelly feet that will gross out anyone in the immediate vicinity when you remove your shoes.

One oft-recommended solution many try is to apply a sweat-absorbing powder, like talcum or cornstarch. After applying the powder to your foot and sliding your foot in, your feet will stay dry.

However, that's not without its cost. There are three major disadvantages to powder.

First: The powder makes a mess. When you take your shoes off, through walking and sweating your feet will have formed clumps of powder that will need to be shaken out of the shoe. Also, your foot will still be covered with powder so you must be careful where you walk as you WILL leave powdery footprints.

Second: The powder doesn't last forever. After a while, the effect will wear off and your feet will start to sweat again.

A better solution to go sockless is to wear socks.

Wait, what? Stay with me ...

It's not just any kind of sock – it's a special kind called a loafer sock (also know as "peds").

These are teeny-tiny socks that cover as little of your foot as possible. They hide in your shoe so no one can see them, yet still provide the essential sweat-wicking function that is so vital to keeping your feet dry and smell-free.

As a bonus, they're much more comfortable than going traditionally sockless.

Most major sock and underwear companies now make the socks for men, such as Banana Republic and Jockey. Look for ones that have a bit of rubber at the heel so they don't sleep off in

Some may call this cheating. But what they don't know can't hurt you.

The complete guide to cocktail glassware

$
0

Screen Shot 2015 04 08 at 11.15.43 AM

You don't want to be that guy who accidentally serves whiskey in a Collins glass. (Yikes.)

To help you out, we've put together a handy guide of which glasses and bar accessories you'll need for which cocktails.

And then it's up to you to mix the drinks.

If you're a fan of Manhattans and Negronis...

cocktails

You'll need a  a mixing glass for cocktails made of only spirits (such as Manhattans, Negronis, and Martinis).

Stirring the spirits will create the rich, crystal clear look of the drink.

The strainer and bar spoon are stainless steel. The strainer and mixing glass are dishwasher safe.

Yarai mixing glass cocktail set: $56

On the other hand, if you prefer Pisco Sours and White Russians...

cocktailsCocktails that are made with citrus, eggs, dairy or cream liqueurs will need a cocktail shaker.

That's because these drinks need to be shaken in order to properly emulsify the non-alcoholic ingredients.

This set is made of stainless steel.

Stainless steel cocktail shaker & jigger: $70

If you want to glam up mixed drinks...

cocktailsTumblers are flat-bottomed glasses that are used for mixed drinks with ice.

We recommend these blue-tinted glasses in particular because the color will compliment the drink's color.

Pro-tip: you can jazz up nonalcoholic drinks and plain old water with these glasses, too.

These tumblers, made of recycled glass, come from Morocco.

Hand-blown lightweight tumblers: $48

If you're a whiskey aficionado...

Screen Shot 2015 04 08 at 11.15.43 AMOn the other hand, these tumbler glasses dotted with golden diamonds work better with whiskey cocktails.

The golden colored diamonds nicely compliment the color of whiskey.

Pro-tip: These glasses also work for whiskey neat.

Retro diamond double tumblers: $50

If you can't get enough Gin and Tonics...

cocktailsNot everyone likes to drink their liquor straight.

Some prefer highball cocktails, which means that there is a larger proportion of non-alcohol mixer than alcohol in the glass.

In those cases, you'll want highball glasses. They are taller than your average cocktail tumblers, designed specifically to accommodate the larger proportion of mixer.

This set is made in Italy of 100% lead-free crystal glass.

Highball glasses (set of 4): $68

If you're a fan of the Tom Collins...

Screen Shot 2015 04 08 at 11.16.01 AMTechnically speaking, the Collins glass is designed for the Tom Collins drink.

However, you can also use these for mojitos, Long Island Iced Teas, and other mixed drinks that are heavy on mixers.

These glasses are made in Germany from Tritan crystal glass.

Collins glasses (set of 6): $66

If you're looking for the fanciest cocktail experience...

cocktails champagneCoupe glasses are the sturdier and more stylish cousin of the Martini glass.

Generally, these glasses are used whenever you're drinking something without ice. (It doesn't matter if it was shaken or stirred.)

Your Sidecars, Daiquiris and Aviations will look way more glamorous in these glasses.

Pro-tip: these glasses double as champagne coupes.

Cocktail & champagne coupe: $24

The most popular spots were Starbucks, Chipotle, Panera Bread, and The Cheesecake Factory, according to Clover, which analyzed data from 200,000 users for the survey.

Clover CEO Isaac Raichyk said he was surprised to find that most people were choosing to meet at casual restaurants and coffee shops over fine dining, bars and nightclubs.

"Men seem more willing to commit to a first meeting over dinner at a restaurant vs. women who prefer being able to screen dates quickly over coffee," he said in a release.

Here's why IPAs are so ridiculously popular

$
0
0

Stone RuinTen IPA beer

The India pale ale, or IPA, is without a doubt craft beer's most popular style.

Identified by the signature bitterness imparted by hops, the IPA derives from the pale ale, which was hopped in the early 1800s as a means of preservation on the long voyage to India.

Though some believe the days of IPAs are over, the numbers indicate otherwise. In 2014, sales of session IPAs — that is, IPAs with low alcohol by volume — were up 450% over the previous year. More than 100 new IPA brands were introduced to stores, and now imperial (high alcohol) IPAs are more plentiful than amber ales.

Given the IPA's bitterness, sometimes combined with a high alcohol content, the popularity of the style is a bit surprising, but many "hop heads" are obsessed with the beer — and it's not just about the taste.

IPAs are buzzy

The popularity of IPAs has allowed for a growing trendiness. Craft brewers are increasingly making IPAs a staple of their selection, and bars are increasingly making them a staple of their rotation.

Brooklyn Brewery brewmaster Garrett Oliver told Business Insider that bars and restaurants without IPAs could be at a disadvantage because so many people want them. The buzz around IPAs is so powerful that it has people calling anything with hops and a strong flavor an IPA.

"Now people are making black IPAs, which doesn't make any sense because the 'P' means 'pale,'" Oliver said. "The thing is that because people know that a lot of people like IPAs these days, putting the word 'IPA' on something that is not an IPA can automatically confer easier marketing."

Big Alice Brewing Co.

And it's working, especially for those still unfamiliar with the variety of beers available in the craft world, according to Kyle Hurst, cofounder of Long Island City, New York's Big Alice Brewing Company.

"For people new to craft beer, they start with IPAs because that's where the buzz is," Hurst said. "For the last three years people have been predicting that IPAs are going out and that sour beers are coming in, but that hasn't happened yet. Every year someone predicts a new trend, but it's always IPAs."

Our taste buds are changing

The popularity of bitter, hoppy IPAs could be linked to a larger movement: the changing of taste buds in America.

Americans are growing increasingly fond of bitter tastes, beer included. Mitch Steele, the brewmaster of Stone Brewing Company in San Diego, gave a simple analogy to explain how taste buds can change.

"It's a lot like coffee, I think," Steele said. "If you don't like coffee, which most people don't the first time they try it, you get used to it. It becomes an acquired taste, and then you start enjoying some of the bitter components and things that you find."

Hops being harvestedNow, after all these years, people's taste for beer has evolved.

"As people continued to drink craft beer, I think they acclimated to the point where the bitterness wasn't a problem," Steele continued. "And now, what I get from it, is people in the past couple of years are much more focused on the flavors in the beer as opposed to the bitterness."

Oliver's not entirely surprised by the popularity of IPAs, given that their flavor is among beer's most prominent and identifiable.

"Since craft beer was, to some extent, a reaction to bland mass-market beer," he said, "it's only natural, I guess, that a very flavorful style would be one of the main things to jump out."

There's a machismo in drinking IPAs

"There's a natural sense of competition" when it comes to IPAs, beer sommelier Joanna Carpenter says, "like, how much hops can they handle?" It's similar to the way people compete in hot-wing-eating contests.

Brooklyn Brewery East India Pale Ale

Oliver said: "Here and there you see brewers who are out there who say, 'Our beer has this level of bitterness or that level of bitterness,' and they're using it almost as a boast."

To Oliver, hop intensity does not equate to beer quality, noting that he does not think it's a sensible way of thinking.

But above the masochistic competitiveness people feel over their ability to handle spiciness, there's an additional curiosity when it comes to the bitterness and other flavors found in IPAs.

"There's definitely still an exploratory sense to it," Carpenter added, and now, more than ever, "people want to push their palates to the limit."

11 unconventional tips for winning at life

We often share career and life advice from the likes of Warren Buffett, Richard Branson, and other incredibly successful people.

It can also be helpful to learn from those in the trenches. A recent Quora thread asked users for their best unconventional life tips.

Here are a few of our favorites:

1. Follow the "60/60 rule" to get more done.

Quora user Doug Parker's "60/60 rule" says that "one minute on the phone will accomplish more than an hour or more of texts or emails." Sometimes you need to stop writing and just make a phone call.

2. Critical people can be blessings in disguise.

"If you meet a person who will criticize you immediately and bluntly in a way that seems completely rude or offensive, keep that person close and never let them slip away," writes user Josh Manson. "When you find someone who cares about you enough to tell you exactly how you do things wrong, make sure you appreciate that person."

3. Don't call in sick — call in well.

Quora user Rob Hanna says to "call in well." Literally.

When he started his career as a "grunt sales assistant" on Wall Street, he couldn't help but notice the insane hours logged by the majority of his coworkers. The top performers, however, followed a different schedule — they came and went to the office as they pleased.

"I simply decided to mimic and model the behaviors of people I wanted to become most like, and started to call in 'well' as a grunt. I surprised my VP by saying, 'Hi, I'm feeling really good so I'm taking the day off to go to Central Park,'" Hanna writes"He was stunned by my audacity, but my best insights on growing my sales and evolving our business model came from those periods of building positive feeling momentum in my life...

"Creatively loaf first to build positive feelings, and then you'll highly perform. Just remember to perform."Man Laying Down on Bench Reading

4. Sometimes all you need is a broom and dustpan to refocus.

"When you are overwhelmed with too many things to do and it feels like you don't have enough time to finish all of it, sweep the floor," says Parker. "Do something simple that will make your area seem less cluttered; this will allow you time to calm down and see that it is not as much as you may have thought previously."

5. Don't make New Year's resolutions.

Rather than crafting a list of resolutions to abide by, try eliminating one bad habit a year. "It'll take all year to actually get rid of it," says user Jennifer Bullard. On the flip side, you could add one good habit a year, and spend the year focusing on making it stick.

6. Random acts of kindness are powerful.

"Do something nice for someone once a month anonymously," suggests Bullard. This can be as simple as paying the toll of the car behind you, putting coins in someone's parking meter, or buying coffee for a customer behind you.

7. Mix in some healthy pessimism.

"Be pessimistic," says user Manish Baluja. "Imagine the worst case scenario of your actions, and then plan accordingly." It never hurts to be over prepared.

8. Don't underestimate the power of a smile.

Parker puts it nicely: "A smile has a sound when talking."

Hanna suggests you "smile, then ask" when negotiating, requesting a favor, or simply asking a question. "Keep the sequence correct," he says. "Always smile FIRST, and then ask. The reverse sequence smacks of insincerity and disrespect to your audience, and is only good for comic relief."women smiling

9. Never forget your manners, even when ordering fast food.

While the manners lesson was hammered home for many of us as children, "75% of people don't say 'please' or 'thank you' at the local fast-food joint," says Parker. "Say 'please' and 'thank you.' It's considered one of our culture's considerate, social oils."

10. Recess is not just for kids.

"Play with a child at least once a week," encourages Bullard. "And I'm not talking about taking your kids to their soccer practice or teaching them their ABC's. This is about silly games you make up on the spot. Run around being 5 again."

11. When nothing is going right, go left.

"Leave it behind you, and move on to something else," says Manson. "It's OK to quit something you can never succeed at."

Men's and women’s razors, soaps, and moisturizers are essentially the same — here's why the women’s version always costs more

Many products for women are no different than the same products marketed to men — but women are paying more.

Gender-based pricing, also known as the “woman tax” or “pink tax,” has been an accepted phenomenon since a 1995 California study that revealed women pay $1,351 a year more for the same products as men. This had such an impact that California became the first and only state to ban gender-discriminatory pricing.

In a new video on the YouTube channel The Daily Share, Mike Byhoff and Katie Isaacson tested just how true this remains in the other 49 states today.

First, they compared Schick razors, both the Hydro 5 for men and the Hydro Silk for women. Both are a similar product with five blades and moisturizing strips, but the women’s razor costs $1.41 more than the men’s.

shick razors pricingThey then did a side-by-side comparison of Neutrogena’s Healthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Cream for women and Neutrogena Men’s Age Fighter Face moisturizer which use the same ingredients according to the company, but the women’s version costs $1.07 more.

neutrogena costs moreWhile Schick refused to comment for the video, Neutrogena told the producers that the reason the women’s products were more expensive was “related to a number of factors, including packaging differences, modification of the formulation that impact the manufacturing process, and the discretion of each retailer.”

That was a similar response to what deodorant spokespeople told Consumer Reports in 2010 when the company found that equivalent women-marketed products such as deodorant and shampoo were significantly more expensive.

One product that the team found was unisex pricing were American Apparel’s Oxford shirts— they cost $74.99 for both genders.

Unfortunately, if you were to get these shirts dry cleaned at the same cleaners, you’d find that the “lady-shirt” would cost more than the men’s — in this case, $6 compared to $5.75.

And it’s not just products. Before President Obama’s Affordable Care Act, women were paying a total of $1 billion more than men for heath insurance premiums. The Affordable Care Act banned those gender-based premiums.

But women still pay more for long-term care insurance. Women can expect to be charged a full 13% more simply because they’re expected to live longer, according to The Daily Share producers.

Maybe it’s time to start buying men’s product instead if they’re cheaper and fit your needs. No need to always reach for the pink if that choice will cost you.

Why supermodels swear by Pilates

Supermodels undergo rigorous diet and fitness regimens to sculpt their bodies. However, they prefer to maintain long and lean figures and make a point to avoid certain exercises that aim to build bulk.

A popular approach to maintaining a lean model figure is Pilates, which was developed in the early 20th century by gymnast and circus performer Joseph Pilates. Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Hannah Ferguson invited us to a private Pilates class at Elev8NYC.

yunkai game of thrones

The fifth season of "Game of Thrones" starts this Sunday (Monday if you're in the UK), promising another 10 episodes of scheming, sex, and bloody violence in the fractured fictional kingdoms of Westeros and Essos.

With a staggering $6 million spent per episode, no expense is spared to faithfully replicate George R. R. Martin's world. Actors and crew travel to Iceland, Morocco, Ireland, and beyond to find the sets that represent the icy crags of the Vale, the untamed wilds of the North, and the bitter desert cities around Slaver's Bay.

But can you tell which is which? With a keen eye — and an encyclopedic knowledge of the Seven Kingdoms — it's possible to identify which real-life windswept hill stands in for the Crownlands, and which snowy tundra is North of the Wall.

(Warning: This post contains extensive spoilers for already-aired episodes of Game of Thrones.)

Let's start with an easy one. Castle Ward in County Down, Northern Ireland, provided the backdrop for which famous castle?

Yep — it's Winterfell, the historic seat of House Stark, ruling family of the North. Trailers suggest we will be seeing more of Winterfell this season.

(For information on Game Of Thrones set locations, we referred to articles by the Daily Mail, Skyscanner and the Irish Tourist Board, as well as our own knowledge.)

How about the Azure Window in Malta?
