Tech investor-backed Blue Bottle Coffee will open a branch in Tokyo this week

Blue Bottle Coffee, the high-end coffee chain that's a favorite among the tech community, will launch its first international outpost this week, SFGate reports.

The new cafe opens Friday in Japan, in Tokyo's residential Kiyosumi neighborhood. It will have the same menu as the U.S. stores.

Blue Bottle founder and CEO James Freeman has long been inspired by Japanese coffee culture. Many Blue Bottle stores, including the one in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, have high-tech coffee equipment from Japanese companies like Hario and Oji.

Freeman is currently in Tokyo to put the final touches on the new store.

"It’s such a dream," he told SFGate. "I’m walking down the street, I’m going to work, I’m going to roast coffee, and it’s in Tokyo."

Though the store won't open for a few more days, the company has put on a few preview events this week. If the huge turnout is any indication, Tokyo residents should plan to wait in line next time they want to pick up some Blue Bottle.

Last year Blue Bottle announced a $25.7 million Series B funding round with contributions from Instagram cofounder Kevin Systrom, Twitter cofounder Evan Williams, venture capitalist Chris Sacca, WordPress cofounder Matt Mullenweg, Google Ventures, and Morgan Stanley Investment Management.

Another BRIC has passed Russia in the billionaire rankings

0

sad russia hockey fans8

Russia just lost its spot as the world's third largest community of billionaires. It was knocked off the podium by another BRIC country: India.

That's according to the latest "global rich list" from publisher Hurun Report, which ranks dollar billionaires around the world.

Ten Russians dropped out of the ranking this year, while India's number jumped by 27 people up to 97 in total.

Their combined wealth is $266 billion, and Mukesh Ambani, worth $20 billion, holds his place as India's richest person. (He also has one of the flashiest houses on the planet.)

India has become a hotspot for investment since the pro-business Narendra Modi was voted in as Prime Minister last May. Stocks have rallied ever since, helping to line the pockets of Indian business owners and investors.

Meanwhile, weak oil prices, a plummeting currency, and sanctions from the West have hurt Russia's wealthy.

Props to India, but the US and China still dominate. They're home to 537 and 430 billionaires each, and together account for nearly half the world's total.

Here are the top 20 countries:

  1. USA: 537
  2. China: 430
  3. India: 97
  4. Russia: 93
  5. UK: 80
  6. Germany: 72
  7. Switzerland: 60
  8. Brazil: 56
  9. Chinese Taipei: 48
  10. France: 46
  11. Japan: 45
  12. Canada: 39
  13. South Korea: 33
  14. Turkey: 33
  15. Australia: 32
  16. Thailand: 29
  17. Italy: 28
  18. Singapore: 26
  19. Indonesia: 24
  20. Spain: 19

Check out Hurun's full report here for more information on the world's wealthiest, including rankings by city and industry, as well as China's wealthiest billionaires broken down by star sign.

washing dishes hands soap

Dishwashers are generally a luxury — unless you're left rewashing dishes that come out less than sparkling.

To avoid the dreaded rewash, our friends at FindTheBest found the finest dishwashers available using their Smart Rating system, which factors in each model's energy efficiency and specific features, as well as expert reviews from JD Power.

Here are their top 10 picks:

10. Bosch SHX68R5 ($1,099)

The Bosch SHX68R5 can fit up to 14 full place settings on its two adjustable racks, and allows users to delay its start up to 19 hours. This dishwasher's customizable settings also make it convenient for the host who hates doing dishes by hand — there's a 30 minute express wash and a delicate cycle for fine China.

9. Bosch SHV68R53UC ($1,199)

With the Bosch SHV68R53UC dishwasher, you'll get six different wash cycles, variable spray pressure, and a sanitizing option that achieves National Sanitation Foundation standards of cleanliness. Another perk: this model is so quiet, you'll hardly even realize when it's running.

8. Bosch SHE68R5 ($999)

At just under $1000, the Bosch SHE68R5 is slightly cheaper than its top-rated competitors, but that doesn't mean it skimps on any amenities. This dishwasher has six wash cycles, AquaStop leak protection, and a half load option for small batches of dishes. It's also energy friendly, with EcoSense technology that reduces energy use by up to 20%.

7. Bosch SHV7ER53UC ($1,299)

When you're faced with a full load, nothing beats the flexibility of the Bosch SHV7ER53UC. A third loading rack adds additional space, and VarioFlex racks allow users to maximize their space. It also has a flexible silverware basket and an extra tall item sprinkler.

6. Bosch SHX7ER55UC ($1,299)

The Bosch SHE7ER55UC features 10 different cycle options, including heated dry, extra rinse, and heavy duty for pots and pans. This model is also fairly energy efficient, using 66% less water than a standard dishwasher and earning an 87 out of 100 overall efficiency rating.

Bosch SHX8ER55UC

5. Bosch SHE7ER55UC ($1,299)

This stainless steel dishwasher comes with three adjustable racks, fold down tines, and water filtration and softening systems. And at 42 decibels, the Bosch SHE7ER55UC is also one of the quietest options out there.

4. Bosch SHX9ER55UC ($1,999)

Though it comes with a hefty price tag at $1,999, the Bosch SHX9ER55UC is worth the cash. It boasts a 97 out of 100 efficiency rating, runs at a quiet 39 decibels, and allows you to delay its start for up to a full 24 hours. This models is gentle on your dishes as well, with separate settings for delicate glassware and fine China.

3. Bosch SHV9ER53UC ($1,999)

Earning a 97 Smart Rating, the Bosch SHV9ER53UC comes with space to load 14 place settings, a multi-function LED screen that shows time remaining in each cycle, and an ActiveTab tray to optimize detergent. Its flexible design — complete with VarioFlex racks and an extra tall item sprinkler — allows users to maximize space, even fitting in oddly shaped pots or tall glasses.

2. Bosch SHE9ER55UC ($1,999)

When it comes to extras, this dishwasher's got it all. The Bosch SHE9ER55UC is equipped with six wash cycles, a sanitization option, variable spray pressure, an ActiveTab tray to optimize detergent, water softening technology, and a load size sensor that automates water temperature.

1. Bosch SHX8ER55UC ($1,499)

With a perfect 100 efficiency rating, the Bosch SHX8ER55UC uses 49% less energy and 66% less water than a standard dishwasher, making it a great choice for both the environment and the environmentally-conscious. It's also extremely quiet and comes with three racks for fuller loads.

12 common mistakes shoppers make at the grocery store

0
0

whole foods shoppers mother and daughter

Shoppers often waste money at the grocery store without realizing it.

We asked Melissa d’Arabian, Food Network host and author of the best-selling book Ten Dollar Dinners, about some of the most common mistakes they make.

Here are the expensive blunders—and easy ways to fix them.

1. Paying full price for meat. "Meat is usually the most expensive item on your dinner plate," d'Arabian says. She suggests checking circulars for "loss leaders"—highly discounted items that get shoppers into stores. Often, cuts of pork, beef, and chicken will be 50 to 75% off. Buy this meat in bulk then freeze it for later.

2. Being a slave to a recipe. Instead of buying every item on a long recipe list, think about ingredients you already have and could swap in. "Lemon juice is an acid, so try using another acid, such as vinegar or orange juice in its place," d'Arabian told us. "Soft leafy herbs such a cilantro, mint, basil and parsley, are often interchangeable."

3. Not using the freezer. You can save a lot of money by freezing bread, bacon, herbs (d'Arabian freezes fresh herbs with oil in ice-cube trays), and tomatoes. Buy these items in bulk when they're on sale, and you'll save even more.

4. Thinking that "inexpensive" ingredients don't warrant budget shopping. Yeah, a can of beans is pretty cheap. But d'Arabian points out that you can buy five cans' worth of dried beans for the price of one can. Check out her blog post for how to portion out and cook your own.

5. Not doing math in the produce aisle. Most produce items are available pre-packaged or loose. "Take 10 seconds to do some quick math to determine the per-pound price of a package before deciding whether to buy loose or packaged," d'Arabian says. Usually, potatoes and carrots are cheaper packaged, while mushrooms, apples, and oranges are cheaper by themselves.

6. Grabbing a big cart. "Studies have shown that grocery stores can do one simple thing that will result in you unwittingly spending more money: put out bigger grocery carts!" d'Arabian says. "Use this information to your advantage and always select the smallest cart available." If the store only has carts, fill up yours with less expensive products like produce before hitting the snack aisles. Ten Dollar Dinners Cookbook Cover

7. Splurging in the wrong department. Replacing rib-eye steak with filet mignon can cost you an extra $15 per pound, d'Arabian says. Instead, treat yourself in the produce aisle. Expensive wild mushrooms or heirloom tomatoes cost $1 or $2 more, but will make your meal a lot nicer.

8. Overlooking the salad bar. "A handful of hazelnuts from that aisle will set you back only 20 or 30 cents—toast, chop, and sprinkle over green beans or in an inexpensive lettuce salad and you have a fancy restaurant-worthy dish," d'Arabian says. "The salad bar is also a great way to grab a small quantity of a high-impact ingredient (such as high-quality briny olives for a tapenade)."

9. Not asking the grocery staff for help. "Ask the person behind the butcher counter for advice on how to cook an unfamiliar cut of meat that is on sale, or ask if he will break down a large inexpensive pork loin into a variety of cuts: chops, cubes, and a few smaller roasts," d'Arabian recommends.

10. Getting bogged down by a list. "Be open to guidance from the sales prices," d'Arabian shares. "I usually just write 'vegetables for dinner' on my list, and let the prices be my guide when I’m in the produce aisle."

11. Not knowing the prices of the things you buy most. In order to shop smarter, you need to know how much essential items like chicken breasts, milk, or diapers cost normally. That will help you spot a bargain at the store. Make a list of the items you buy most so you can stock up when there's a sale.

12. Thinking that saving only happens at the store. "Ask any restaurateur: Half the battle in saving money is in inventory management. Manage your pantry and ingredients wisely, and you will save money!" d'Arabian says. "Also important: managing your leftovers. Remember, the most expensive ingredient in your kitchen right now is the one you throw away."

This gorgeous Brooklyn mansion has 50 rooms and was just listed for a record $40 million

3 Pierrepont Place most expensive brooklyn listing

A four-floor townhouse in New York's Brooklyn Heights neighborhood has hit the market for $40 million, making it the most expensive ever listed home in Brooklyn.

It unseats Brooklyn’s previous most expensive home — a $35 million, 25,500-square-foot townhouse in Williamsburg — by $5 million.

The mansion is nearly 17,500 square feet with 9,000 square feet of garden space. It has 16 bedrooms, 16 bathrooms, and a whopping 50 rooms.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, retired banker and former president of Republic New York Corp Jeff Keil bought the property back in 1991 for $2.3 million. The WSJ reports that he wants to spend more time at his Florida home, but that “he’ll miss the large Thanksgiving gatherings — 34 people around a table — in their Brooklyn apartment.”

Time will tell if the mansion is able to sell at its staggering price point. A home in Brooklyn’s Mill Basin area that was built by a mobster and owned by a Russian heiress was ruthlessly price chopped from $30 million to $17 million after being unable to find a buyer.

Vicki Negron of Corcoran Group Real Estate has the listing.

Welcome to 3 Pierrepont Place, the new most expensive home listed in Brooklyn at $40 million.

The mansion is nearly 17,500 square feet and has four floors.

The view from the townhouse is described as cinematic with sweeping vistas of New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty, the Financial District, the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, and Governor's Island.

The incredible toys of hedge fund billionaire Steve Cohen

Billionaire Toys - Steve Cohen

When you run one of the world's most successful hedge funds, you can probably afford some pretty amazing stuff.

So it makes sense that Steve Cohen, with an estimated net worth of $10.3 billion, has a long list of incredible personal purchases.

Cohen started SAC Capital in 1992, and became a Wall Street legend after his firm saw returns of 70% for two consecutive years.

Cohen is known for his love of art, having spent lavish amounts on famous artwork by Pablo Picasso, Jasper Johns, Damien Hirst, Andy Warhol, Jeff Koons and more. He also enjoys buying up real estate, and owns several properties, each worth millions of dollars.

In 2013, an SEC probe into insider trading allegations at SAC Capital cost Cohen $616 million, and in the past couple years, the billionaire has started unloading some of his more expensive items. Cohen himself wasn't charged, and restructured SAC Capital into a new family office firm called Point72 Asset Management.

But the SEC settlement doesn't necessarily mark the end of Cohen's extravagant spending. Cohen's still in the game – Point72 Asset Management has been doing well since its creation and pulled in $2.5 -$3 billion for 2014.

Cohen once spent $100,000 for Food Network star Guy Fieri to spend the day with him.

He's dabbled in sports – Cohen bought a 4% stake in the New York Mets for $20 million.

Source: Reuters

He also made an unsuccessful bid for the LA Dodgers, during which he hired an architect for the Dodgers stadium.

London just approved a new plan for 'cycle superhighways' — here's what they'll look like

London Bike Lanes

London Mayor Boris Johnson just got final approval Wednesday for his ambitious plan to reshuffle the city's roads into a more cycling-friendly format. The plan includes the creation of "cycling superhighways" through the British capital.

Traffic lanes will be converted, new curbs installed, and parking spaces moved to put Johnson's plan for the bike lanes with dedicated traffic signals in place. "Quietways" will also be installed, which are less segregated bike lanes on streets with less traffic.

There will be two main highway lanes — one north-south, and another traveling east-west — and the project is expected to cost $240 million, according to Britain's ITV.

London Bike LanesThese improvements, all part of London's massive $6 billion Road Modernization Plan, will reshape and modernize some of London's busiest intersections and roads, creating a very different flow of traffic in the British capital.

London's City Hall has reportedly also admitted this may cause traffic disruptions for motorists, though this worry hasn't borne out in other cities with dedicated bike lanesSome taxi and business groups opposed the plan because of this, however, as well as the plan to ban vehicle turns at some intersections where turning is currently legal, according to the Guardian.

For a look at how drastically the roads will change, check out Transport for London's map of the changes below.

central london grid map

Johnson is famous for his championing of bike riding in London and was a main proponent of London's bike share program, which have been named "Boris bikes" in his honor. Cycling has doubled in London in recent years, but that rise is correlated with a rise in deaths from bicycle collisions with larger motor vehicles, according to NPR.

Picasso's granddaughter is about to flood the market with thousands of his paintings, and art investors are freaking out

0
0

Marina Picasso

Earlier this year, we learned that Marina Picasso, the granddaughter of famed Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, planned to sell off her grandfather's art from her private collection.

Early rumors hinted that she would be parting with seven very famous paintings as well as the villa she inherited, La Californie, which together have an estimated value of $290 million.

But on Wednesday, The New York Times reported that Marina Picasso is actually in possession of 10,000 original Picasso works that she inherited. She plans to sell them all personally — one by one — with the money going towards her philanthropic efforts.

The announcement has art investors, auctioneers, and dealers all worried — with that amount of goods flooding the market, prices for Picasso works could drop and the art world could lose out on millions of dollars.

Marina Picasso became famous in 2001 for her memoir "Picasso: My Grandfather," in which she accused the artist of destroying her childhood. She recounts living in near-poverty while her father begged for an allowance from Picasso.

Because Picasso left no will when he died in 1973, his wife, ex-wife, four children, and eight grandchildren were forced to scramble over his estate. Marina, to her surprise, inherited a fifth of the estate, including the villa La Californie.

Marina Picasso But her new-found wealth was not enough to soften her memory of her late grandfather. In her memoir, Marina wrote that she turned around all the paintings in the villa as an act of vengeance.

She is currently in possession of 10,000 works of art by Picasso, which includes 300 paintings, according to the Times. They will be sold directly by Marina, and she will meet the clients personally in Geneva, according to an earlier report by the New York Post's Page Six

The first work that Marina will sell is the 1935 painting "La Famille," a rare realistic-style painting that could fetch millions.

“It’s symbolic because I was born in a great family, but it was a family that was not a family,” Marina Picasso told the Times.

Marina is also in possession of a portrait of Picasso’s first wife, titled “Portrait de femme (Olga),” which could sell for over $60 million if she ever chose to part with it.

PicassoAnother set of famous works in her collection is the 1911 painting “Femme à la Mandoline (Mademoiselle Leonie assie)” which could sell for as much as $60 million (pictured on the left), and a 1921 work titled “Maternité” starting at $54 million (right).

Picasso A friend of Marina’s told Page Six that the decision to sell is “about letting go of the past." The Times reports that the money will go towards her philanthropy projects, including a pediatric hospital in Vietnam and projects in France and Switzerland that would benefit the elderly and troubled teens.
