Marriages And Businesses Fail For The Same 3 Reasons, Says A Silicon Valley Couples Therapist

$
0
0

facepalm wedding failPsychologist Peter Pearson started The Couples Institute with his wife Ellyn in 1984 in Menlo Park, California — the heart of Silicon Valley.

For Pearson, you cofound a marriage in the same way you cofound a company, and the two "ventures" run into the same set of problems.

"By and large, businesses and marriages fail for the same three reasons," Pearson says.

They are:

Not learning from experience.

"[Failing relationships] keep having the same damn problem over and over again, and they don't learn from it," Pearson says.

Similarly, a company that repeatedly falters with recruitment, sales, or shipping product is heading toward a downfall.

You have to acknowledge that there are always going to be issues that come up at work or in a relationship, Pearson says. The key is to adopt a growth mentality, seeing problems as opportunities for growth— and not getting stuck.

"The definition of success isn't that you don't have problems," he says. "Success is that you don't have the same problems that you had last year."

Not adapting to "disruption."

Legendary Harvard Business School professor Clay Christensen gave us the term "disruption," which describes how a change of conditions in an industry can destroy or nurture a business — like how widespread broadband internet access allowed Netflix to stream movies and topple Blockbuster.

If you don't adapt to those tectonic shifts in business, you're history — and it's the same with a relationship.

"If you have kids come along," Pearson says, "that's a change in condition."

Children are a "gravitational hole," he says. They change the whole dynamic of a marriage, pulling in energy from either party that used to be spent elsewhere.

"You have to find ways to compensate for that," he says.

Not predicting future problems.

Business leaders ask good questions about their futureDanny Meyer, the high-profile head of Union Square Hospitality, likes to ask, "How can we become the company that would put us out of business?"

But while a leadership team might ask how they could getblindsided, the couples that come into Pearson's office rarely make the same inquiries.

Take, for example, your prototypical power couple, both of whom put in long hours at the office. Pearson says that they're not likely to think, "Huh, if we stay on this trajectory, coming home exhausted every night and working through the weekend, I wonder where that might take us in five years?"

That's a major problem. Without thinking about where you're going, you're not going to have a thoughtful outcome. It follows, then, that asking about the trajectory of a relationship is useful in the same way that imagining the future of a business can be.

"Most couples stop thinking critically about their relationships after the honeymoon stage. After they get married they just assume that things will work out," Pearson says. "But it's no different than two people beginning a startup company. No two people would ever begin a startup company thinking, 'Well now that we started it we don't need to talk about it anymore.'"

16 Billionaires Who Were Once Dirt Poor

$

larry ellisonSome of the world's wealthiest people started out dirt poor.

Here are 16 rags-to-riches stories that remind us through determination, grit, and a bit of luck anyone can overcome their circumstances and achieve extraordinary success.

This is an update of a story originally written by Vivian Giang.

Kenny Troutt, the founder of Excel Communications, paid his way through college by selling life insurance.

Net worth: $1.5 billion

Troutt grew up with a bartender dad and paid for his own tuition at Southern Illinois University by selling life insurance. He made most of his money from phone company Excel Communications, which he founded in 1988 and took public in 1996. Two years later, Troutt merged his company with Teleglobe in a $3.5 billion deal.

He's now retired and invests heavily in racehorses.

Starbucks' Howard Schultz grew up in a housing complex for the poor.

Net worth: $2.3 billion

In an interview with British tabloid Mirror, Schultz says: "Growing up I always felt like I was living on the other side of the tracks. I knew the people on the other side had more resources, more money, happier families. And for some reason, I don't know why or how, I wanted to climb over that fence and achieve something beyond what people were saying was possible. I may have a suit and tie on now but I know where I'm from and I know what it's like."

Schultz ended up winning a football scholarship to the University of Northern Michigan and went to work for Xerox after graduation. Shortly after, he took over a coffee shop called Starbucks, which at the time had only 60 shops. Schultz became the company's CEO in 1987 and grew the coffee chain to more than 16,000 outlets worldwide.

Investor Ken Langone's parents worked as a plumber and cafeteria worker.

Net worth: $2.6 billion

To help pay for Langone's school at Bucknell University, he worked odd jobs and his parents mortgaged their home.

In 1968, Langone worked with Ross Perot to take Electronic Data Systems public. (It was later acquired by HP.) Just two years later, he partnered with Bernard Marcus to start Home Depot, which also went public in 1981.

asia carrera, former porn starEver wonder what porn stars do when they retire from "the business"?

They become real estate agents, authors, activists, private investigators, and your next door neighbor in the 'burbs.

The 2010 documentary "After Porn Ends" caught up with 12 former adult film performers to see where life had taken them. We've tracked down a majority of the film's stars for more recent updates.

Asia Carrera was the first half-Asian female to become an A-list porn star, appearing in 389 videos.

The Mensa International member walked away from a full academic scholarship to college to pursue a career in porn. She enjoyed learning all the crew members' jobs in between scenes.

Today, Asia lives with her two children in Mormon country, Utah, where porn is illegal. She recently made headlines for wearing a colander in her driver's license photo, as a religious statement.

The 10 Poorest States In America

$

The Center for American Progress Action Fund has released its 2014 State of the States Report examining how states rank in comparison to one another in terms of inequality, poverty, and opportunity.

The most recent Census data shows 14.5% of Americans, or 45.3 million people, live below the poverty line of $23,834 per year for a family of four. Poverty is heavily concentrated in the South.

Despite steady economic growth since 2009, the US' poverty rate remains fairly high due to the concentration of wealth at the top of the economic spectrum, the report concludes. In 2013, the top 5% of Americans took in more than 22.3% of all income.

Here are the 10 poorest states in the union:

1) Mississippi

mississippi

Poverty rate: 24.1%

Mississippi is the poorest state in the US, with 695,915 people living below the poverty line. It also ranks last in its rate of child poverty (33.7%), and next to last in hunger and food insecurity. Mississippi — along with Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, and South Carolina — has no state minimum wage, but the unemployed are largely covered by state welfare programs.

2) New Mexico

1926979442_d171a6be8e_b

Poverty rate: 22%

In New Mexico, 31% of children live in poverty, and many of them are homeless. New Mexico has the highest teen birth rate in the country, with 47.5 births per 1,000 women ages 15 to 19 in 2012. But the state ranks eighth-best for number children living with their parents: only four in every 1,000 live in foster care. New Mexico has been slow to recover from the national recession. In 2012 alone, 3,900 people working in the public sector lost their jobs.

3) Louisiana

Louisiana

Poverty rate: 19.8%

Louisiana is the most unequal state in the country in terms of its gender wage gap: women earned just 66% of what men earned in 2013. Louisiana is also the third most unequal state overall: in 2013, the share of income going to the top 20% of households in Louisiana was 18.5 times that going to the bottom 20%. Its unemployment rate, however, is fairly low, at 6.2%.

4) Georgia

georgia

Poverty rate: 19%

Almost two million Georgians currently live below the poverty line, and 21% of residents ages 18 to 24 were not in school or working as of 2012. Benefits are scarce: 84% of unemployed workers in Georgia do not receive any kind of unemployment insurance — even as poverty is soaring, fewer than 4,000 adults in Georgia receive welfare.

5) Washington, D.C.

d.c.

Poverty rate: 18.9%

Washington, D.C. has the highest level of income inequality in the country: in 2013, the share of income going to the top 20% of households in Washington, D.C. was 30.3 times the share received by the bottom 20%. Only 59% of high school students graduated in 2012 — the national average is just over 80%. D.C. adults ages 25-24 are among the most educated in the country, however, with 70.2% having obtained an associate's degree or higher as of 2012.

6) Kentucky

kentucky

Poverty rate: 18.8%

At just over 8%, Kentucky's unemployment rate is one of the highest in the country. The eastern Kentucky counties of Clay, Jackson, Lee, and Leslie have fared particularly poorly: the unemployment rate in Clay County is 12.7% and only 7.4% of the population has a bachelor’s degree or higher, The New York Times reported.

7) Alabama

alabamaPoverty rate: 18.7%

More than one in four children live in poverty in this rural Southern state. From 2011 to 2013, 16.7% of Alabama households were food insecure, meaning they struggled to provide enough food for their families. Nearly one million Alabamians were dependent on food stamps in 2013, the Montgomery Advertiser reported.

8) Arizona

arizonaPoverty rate: 18.6%

Much like Georgia, the percentage of unemployed Arizonians receiving welfare from the state is very low. As of 2012, almost one in five young people ages 18-24 were neither in school nor working. Despite Arizona's high rate of poverty and unemployment, only 6.7% of unemployed workers in Arizona were helped by unemployment insurance in 2013.

9) South Carolina

294428636_a0ede4ee9c_o

Poverty rate: 18.6%

South Carolina has one of the highest rates of child poverty in the country, with 27.3% of children living below the poverty line in 2013. South Carolina's median household income was $23,906 in 2012, and it was even less for African Americans ($15,398) and Hispanics ($13,681), according to the South Carolina Revenue and Fiscal Affairs office

10) West Virginia

west virginiaPoverty rate: 18.5%

West Virginia has traditionally relied on its mining industry for jobs and growth. But as mining jobs become increasingly scarce, West Virginians — many of whom never obtained a college degree — are finding themselves stuck. Only 31.3% of young adults ages 25 to 34 had an associate's degree or higher as of 2012, and women earn far less than men. In 2013, women’s median earnings were 69% those of men.

It's About To Get A Whole Lot Easier For Americans To Travel To Cuba

Plaza de Armas book stalls Havana Cuba

The US just announced major policy changes in its relationship with Cuba and the two countries are working towards normalized diplomatic relations.

This means that soon it's likely going to get much easier for Americans to travel to Cuba.

It's worth noting that travel to Cuba is already booming; In 2012 and 2013, more than 90,000 Americans legally visited Cuba, according to the New York Times — and there's a good chance many more have visited illegally.

But it's complicated to travel there: Travelers currently need special visas or are required to travel with set tour groups, and there are no direct commercial flights between the US and Cuba.

All of that will likely change soon.

Senior Obama administration officials announced in a press conference call with reporters on Wednesday plans to lift many of its existing travel restrictions. While all of the details have not yet been made clear, an official said the change will include a "number of steps to significantly increase travel, commerce, and the flow of information to and from Cuba.Officials also noted that the eased travel restrictions would allow more Americans who qualify under the current license program to visit Cuba.

While it's not technically illegal for US citizens to travel to Cuba, most are prohibited from spending any money there. These new measures would allow visitors to be able to purchase "$400 of general goods and up to $100 of alcohol and tobacco products that can include cigars" while in Cuba.

We're still waiting for more information on the ease of these travel restrictions, but it's clear that more Americans will be traveling to Cuba very soon.

Alibaba Founder Jack Ma Nearly Doubled His Wealth This Year — Here's His Inspiring Life Story

alibaba jack ma

Fresh off the biggest IPO in history, Alibaba founder and chairman Jack Ma is now the richest person in China.

Ma made more money that anyone else in the world this year. His wealth grew by $18.5 billion between December 2013 and December 2014, a whopping 173% increase.

He's now worth an estimated $29.2 billion, which includes his 7.8% stake in Alibaba and a nearly 50% stake in payment processing service Alipay.

Ma's is a true rags-to-riches story. He grew up poor in communist China, failed his college entrance exam twice, and was rejected from dozens of jobs, including one at KFC, before finding success with his third internet company, Alibaba.

Jack Ma (a.k.a. Ma Yun) was born on October 15, 1964, in Hangzhou, located in the southeastern part of China. He has an older brother and a younger sister. He and his siblings grew up at a time when communist China was increasingly isolated from the West, and his family didn't have much money when they were young.

 Source: 60 Minutes, USA Today

Ma was scrawny and often got into fights with classmates. "I was never afraid of opponents who were bigger than I," he recalls in "Alibaba," a book by Liu Shiying and Martha Avery. Still, Ma had hobbies just like any other kid. He liked collecting crickets and making them fight, and was able to distinguish the size and type of cricket just by the sound it made.

After then-US president Richard Nixon visited Hangzhou in 1972, Ma's hometown became a tourist mecca. As a teenager, Ma started waking up early to visit the city's main hotel, offering visitors tours of the city in exchange for English lessons. The nickname "Jack" was given to him by a tourist he befriended.

The Pope Is Having A Wonderful Birthday

pope francisPope Francis celebrates his 78th birthday today in St. Peter's Square ahead of Cuba's release of ailing American prisoner, Alan Gross.

According to the Vatican, Pope Francis helped broker a deal between the US and Cuba which resulted "in solutions acceptable to both parties." The Holy Father even hosted a discussion between the two nations at the Vatican, according to an Obama official.

"Pope Francis personally issued an appeal in a letter that he sent to President Obama and to President Raul Castro calling on them to resolve the case of Alan Gross and the cases of the three Cubans who have been imprisoned here in the United States, and also encouraging the united states and Cuba to pursue a closer relationship,” an official reportedly told TIME.

pope francisThe 'very rare Papal letter' encouraged both delegations, who have not had diplomatic relations since Fidel Castro's rise in 1961, to negotiate a deal.

The US has maintained a trade embargo on Cuba for more than 50 years.

Pope Francis, who is from Argentina, congratulated both administrations on their agreement and offered support on the newfound bilateral relations.

Meanwhile, the highly popular met with visitors in St. Peter's Square, blew out the candles on his birthday cak, and sipped on the traditional Argentinean drink of mate.

Forget Matching Furniture: Here Are The 5 Hottest Home Design Trends For 2015

$

cowhide bedding

If you're looking to decorate your home with some Ikea basics — stop right now.

Matching furniture and solid paints wall colors are apparently "soon-to-be forgotten" interior decorating fads, according to the interior design experts at Zillow Digs.

And you wouldn't want your house to look completely untrendy, now would you?

But good news! The experts at Zillow Digs have also kindly announced with the five new interior decorating trends that will take 2015 by storm.

"Unexpected textures and an eclectic, modern vibe are about to find their way in 2015. Expect to see a more sophisticated look in 2015 that incorporates gold hardware, natural textures, and a subtle mid-century modern undertone," writes Kerrie Kelly, a Zillow Digs design expert.

So what are these so-called "sophisticated" trends of 2015? Lets take a look.

1. Gold Fixtures

"In 2015, homeowners will no longer be limited to silver or stainless steel fixtures, and will feel free to mix and max finish colors, or go bold with all gold," according to the Zillow Digs report.

So that means you can bling out your house exactly as you've always dreamed of doing in the new year. We think you should start with the bathroom — no sink is complete without a gold faucet.

gold sink

And since it's officially on-trend to mix finishes, you may want to consider a bronze-and-gold gryphon lamp fixture for your living room.

gryphon gold bronze

If you're not quite sure exactly how to go with the whole gold design thing, you can take a cue from St. Petersburg's Hermitage. They really nailed the trend in the boudoir room.

Hermitage Russia St Petersburg red

2. Cowhide

Without a doubt, there is nothing more "sophisticated" than the cowhide rug. Your apartment or house certainly won't be complete without one.

“Cowhide is the ideal accent texture for 2015’s modern, yet approachable design aesthetic. Zillow Digs Designers say elements of cowhide will fight their pay into pillows, rugs, throw blankets, and even artwork this year," according to the Zillow Digs report.

Just imagine how nice it would be to have a few guests over for a glass of wine in this living room:

cowhide rugOr perhaps you would rather keep the cowhide all to yourself? You can also get a few cowhide pillows, and even a cowhide throw to add "the ideal accent texture" that's also an "approachable design."

Screen Shot 2014 12 17 at 9.53.39 AM

 3. Wallpaper

"Wallpaper is coming back in a big way," says Zillow Digs designer Jamie Backwith of Beckwith Interiors.

According to the experts at Zillow Digs, consumers should expect to see an increase in available colors and textures in home stores because everyone's dying to spice up their wall game.

So say good-bye to those plain white walls in lieu of some bold light-blue mixed with yellow:

bedroom printed wall paper

Or maybe even a deep purple and white flower combination:

wall paper

But if you're looking for something a tad more demure, perhaps something like this lime-green option is your best bet.

wall green

4. Blue Accent Colors

Blue will be the most popular accent color for interior decorating, and — believe it or not — it also happens to be the perfect complement to Marsala, the 2015 Pantone Color of the Year, according to the Zillow Digs designers.

"Pops of indigo blue or deep navy will become a stable in home design this year, as their deep natural hues become extra vibrant against warm earth tones like Marsala," according to Zillow Digs home design expert, Kerrie Kelly.

If you're not sure how you feel about the navy-accent trend, a pillow like this is a great way to dip your toes in.

pillow

If you want to go a bit bolder, blue chairs could add that perfect "pop" of blue in your room, like so:

Screen Shot 2014 12 17 at 10.11.37 AM

And if you really want to take your decorating game to the next level, you should invest in a 2-in-1 navy blue and gold accent chair like this:

chair

5. Modern/Mid-century Modern elements.

Last but not least, a throwback to modern design elements of the 1950s through the 1970s. So that couch you saw on that 1970s family-style sitcom is officially trendy today.

However, "while this trend will be popular, Zillow Digs experts advise homeowners to be careful when integrating into homes, as the trend is great for inspiration, but shouldn't take over the house."

Consequently, we think these are the best subtle ways to bring the 1970s to life in your home. First and foremost, a nice mustard and wood chair:mustard chairOr maybe this orange and printed combo chair — just the right accent to punch up your room a bit.

The company holiday party presents an interesting challenge for people who want to let loose and enjoy the company of their coworkers without damaging their reputation.

Here are 14 tips to make sure your office holiday party is an unmitigated success.

This post is an updated version of a story originally written by Vivian Giang.

Ask about the dress code ahead of time.

You need to find out what the dress code is and stick to it, career coach Barbara Pachter tells Business Insider.

Pachter, the author of "The Essentials of Business Etiquette," says you don't want people talking about what you wore the day or night after the party. Whatever you wear, remember that it's still a business event.

Aside from the company's dress code, don't forget that behavior and harassment policies still apply— even if the party is off-site.

Don't go on an empty stomach.

Although there might be hors d'oeuvres, you should still eat at least a little bit before the party begins. If not, you may become more intoxicated than you intended. Furthermore, eating while you're mingling isn't the most comfortable in a professional setting.

"Eat a little before you go to a business social event," says Pachter. "If you drink, you'll have something in your stomach, and if the food is delayed, you won't be hungry."

Don't even think about skipping the party.

To show that you're committed to the company, make sure you show up for at least 30 minutes. Always assume company gatherings are "must attend" events.

A Tycoon In Iraq Is Building A $20 Million Replica Of The White House Miles From ISIS Strongholds

A Kurdish business tycoon is building a $20 million replica of the White House in a swanky neighborhood in Erbil, Iraq. The knockoff is situated not 50 miles away from ISIS-held Mosul.

Shihab Shihab, a Kurdish business tycoon, commissioned the mansion to be built with Greek marble instead of sandstone, and while it is smaller than the original White House at 32,300 square feet, the home comes complete with a 9-foot crystal chandelier, 21-karat gold ceilings, and a Turkish bath.

Shihab dreams of Obama coming to visit the house in Kurdistan one day. "If Obama comes, I will invite him to come here," Shihab told NPR. "We will invite him to have Erbil kebab and fish."

Here's a peek inside the construction:

The mansion is being built in Erbil's Dream City, a luxury neighbourhood in northern Iraq lined with million-dollar villas.iraq white house

The mansion is slightly smaller than the actual White House, measuring 32,300 square feet instead of 55,000 square feet. The home's columns have been finished with 21-karat gold leaf.iraq white house

The banister of the home's grand staircase, as well as the ceiling, have also been trimmed with 21-karat gold.iraq white house

A large swimming pool is just one of many features Shihab has made on his replica of the White House.iraq white house

A Turkish bath, decorated with intricate Turkish tiles, is another.iraq white house

Shihab hopes people will talk about his copy as much as they talk about the real White House. He plans to make this colorful room the gym.iraq white house

The home will have two master bedrooms, but Shihab doesn't remember how many rooms the mansion has total — he told NPR it's so big, he can't keep track.iraq white house

When a buyer offered to pay $17 million for the mansion back in October, Shihab reportedly refused, according to the NY Daily News.iraq white house

"I wanted a house people would talk about," Shihab told NPR. "I wanted to create a new landmark that rivals the Citadel. And I think if you have money you should live in luxury."iraq white house

Jeff Bezos Sad Wealth-X just announced its list of the biggest losers this year, proving that even the wealthiest hit rough patches.

Russian gas mogul Leonid Mikhelson lost the most, with over 40% of his fortune slipping away between Russia’s struggling economy and weak oil prices.

Here are the billionaires who lost the most in 2014:

1. Leonid Mikhelson lost $7 billion.

Mikhelson, CEO of Russian gas company Novatek, lost nearly 41% of his $17 billion fortune this year, leaving his current wealth at around $10 billion. His losses stem from a number of factors, including the decline of Russian currency, weak oil prices, and economic sanctions placed on Russia by Western nations in light of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

2. Masayoshi Son lost $5.9 billion.

Though he remains the richest man in Japan, the CEO of SoftBank, Asia’s top Internet and telecommunications corporation, lost nearly $6 billion this year. Losses from Sprint, which SoftBank purchased last year, dragged down the company’s overall earnings this year.

3. Lui Chee Woo lost $5.5 billion.

Chinese casinos struggled overall this year, and Galaxy Entertainment Group, which Woo owns, saw a 20% drop in revenue. Despite earning a strong $8.3 billion in 2013 as gambling surged last year, Woo ended this year with a $5.5 billion loss instead.

4. Jeff Bezos lost $5.5 billion.

As Amazon shares shares continue to drop — down 28% in 2014— Amazon is predicted to lose an estimated $40.5 billion this year, according to Bloomberg. Bezos’s personal wealth took a $5.5 billion hit as well, but the founder remains confident in Amazon’s recovery

5. Sheldon Adelson lost $5.2 billion.

It was a tough year for casino mogul Adelson, who is the CEO of the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. In addition to his personal monetary losses, hackers effectively shut down a major Las Vegas casino of Adelson’s in February, stealing customers’ Social Security Numbers and clearing hard drives.
