The 10 Fattest Countries In The World

$

Obese womanThe number of overweight and obese people has skyrocketed over the past thirty years, jumping from 857 million in 1980 to more than 2 billion in 2013. That's approximately a third of the world's population.

In 2010 alone, between 3 and 4 million people died due to complications from obesity.

While the United States is often pegged as the standard-bearer for overweight populations, there are more than a few countries tracking close behind.

With people in the world becoming more sedentary thanks to desk and computer jobs and more and more gaining access to high calorie, high fat foods like fast food and soda, the obesity epidemic will become a massive public health crisis in the coming decades, unless drastic steps are taken.

A new study out in The Lancet by the Global Burden of Disease has revealed the ten countries with the highest rates of obesity. A few may surprise you.

1. United States

78 million people, or 33% of the adult population.

2. China

chalet le petit palais house 9

The world’s billionaires are flocking to the French Alps this ski season, where deluxe “super chalets” are renting for over $40,000 a day.

These vacation homes rent for such extraordinary prices because they offer luxurious amenities such as personal chefs, butlers, nightclubs, and more.

Of course, the mega-wealthy clientele love it.

One such home is Le Petit Palais chalet in the Three Valleys area of the Alps — a stunning, modern chalet that was only just completed back in 2012. The owner, Dennis Crema, told the Wall Street Journal he values the chalet at over $60 million.

But instead of selling the home, Crema rents it out on a week-by-week basis for anywhere from €100,000 ($125,000) to €240,000 ($300,000) at the height of ski season. That averages to over $40,000 a day, and the reservation requires a deposit of 50% of the total price.

The six-floor, ski-in/ski-out home has its own chef, pool, wine cellar, cigar room, nightclub spectacular views, and over 18,000 square feet of space.

There are seven bedrooms and it can fit between 12 to 15 guests. If that’s not enough, Le Petit Palais also connects to its sister villa, Le Petit Château, via a large underground parking area.

Le Petit Palais is a part of the Courchevel 1850 ski resort and is closest to the Bellecôte slope, perhaps the most popular slope due to its connection to a nearby village with lots of shopping and restaurants.

You can see prices for Le Petit Palais and other super chalets at Alpinel.com.

Welcome to Le Petit Palais chalet at the French Alps ski resort Courchevel 1850.

The stunning chalet has over 18,000 square feet of space.

It is spread over six floors and was renovated in 2012.

Everything You Need To Know About The Giant New Sewer That London Is Building Under The River Thames

$

Thames Tideway Tunnel

London's Victorian-era sewer system is at its breaking point.

Structurally, there's nothing wrong. The web of underground pipes is holding together well more than 150 years after it was first constructed.

But every time it pours, the system overflows. The result: Millions of tons of raw sewage empties into London's Thames River each year, with at least one spillover every week.

To address the problem, London is building a new £4.2 billion "super sewer," which will keep waste out of the riverbank by directing it to other treatment plants.

The project is controversial. Most are concerned about the exorbitant cost, which will be funded largely by the private sector. There are some environmental worries, too.

But the Thames Tideway Tunnel is forging ahead regardless. In September, Britain's largest water utility, Thames Water, received the green light from the government. Construction is expected to start in 2016 and take seven years to complete.

London's 160 kilometers of intersecting sewers were introduced in the second half the 19th Century. At that time, the project was hailed as an engineering feat.

Before that, the Thames was a disease-ridden dumping ground for cesspools, dead animals, garbage, and raw sewage.

This practice went on for hundreds of years, until the summer of 1858 when an unusually intense heatwave resulted in a horrendous smell. The river waste was roasting.

An Experimental Ebola Vaccine Just Took A Giant Leap Forward

The National Institutes of Health's initial trial found the experimental vaccine for the Ebola virus so far is safe for humans and produced an immune response.  Researches found anti-Ebola antibodies in the blood of all 20 healthy adult volunteers. The findings mean the potential vaccine can move to the next phase of testing, which could involve thousands of participants and could start early next year.

The trial vaccine includes genetic material from two Ebola strains, including the one fueling the deadly outbreak in West Africa, which has now infected nearly 16-thousand people.

HOUSE OF THE DAY: A Financier With A Pirate Fetish Is Auctioning Off His Insane Caribbean Mansion

Virgin Islands Villa Whydah

Financier Tom Hudson, founder of investment firm Pirate Capital, is auctioning off his pirate-themed villa on the island of St. Thomas.

Previously on sale for $35 million back in 2012, the island couldn’t find a buyer so it will now be auctioned off to the highest bidder, starting at the low, low price of $6 million.

"The owner has selected the luxury auction process because he is ready to start another real estate project, and wants to first know this property is off his books,” Platinum Luxury Auctions President Trayor Lesnock told Business Insider. “The date-certainty provided by the auction was very attractive to him in this regard, as opposed to continuing the traditional listing process, which can be quite lengthy for higher-priced island properties.”

Known as Villa Whydah, it's been described by Hudson as "the retirement home of a pirate who surrounds himself with the bounty of his exploits with his wife at his side."

Named after a pirate ship that sank in 1717, Whydah sits on the western tip of St. Thomas with views of Botany Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Caribbean Sea. Not only does the 19,000-square-foot home have helipad access, two guest homes, and a caretaker house, but it's fully-outfitted with every bell and whistle someone could dream up.

It comes with six bedrooms, eight bathrooms, and a custom-tiled pool and spa. The mansion is also outfitted with top-notch security and a Crestron System that allows you to control every aspect of the home's electronics, lighting, and temperature from anywhere in the world on your smart phone.

According to the Wall Street Journal, it cost Hudson almost $20 million to renovate the compound.

Lee Steiner at Sotheby's International Realty will be sharing the sale with auction house Platinum Luxury Auctions.

This is Villa Whydah in Charlotte Amalie, the capital of the Virgin Islands.

It's located on the western tip of St. Thomas, and has incredible views of Botany Bay.

It's a part of a 397-acre gated community known as The Preserve.

14 Things Every Traveler Should Pack In Their Carry-On

christmas airport

When you're hovering by your gate at one of the most frustrating airports in the US, holiday travel can seem more tedious than fun.

For that reason, it's imperative that you do everything you can to make it go smoothly — like, for instance, packing the perfect carry-on.

Even if your luggage isn't lost (fingers crossed), you'll no doubt be glad to have a fully-stocked bag on hand at all times.

At the very least, it will spare you the expense of having to buy temporary replacements while your sweater/snacks/toothbrush idle in the bowels of an airplane.

As far as what should go in said bag, we asked experts and scoured the web to figure out what you'll need by your side.

This post was originally written by Mandi Woodruff.

Stop paying for airport WiFi and stay connected with your own MiFi hotspot.

Unless you're interested in shelling out up to $12 to use airport WiFi, it's a good idea to invest in a WiFi hotspot of your own.

With its slim, credit card-sized package and simple access to 4G networks, personal MiFi hotspots like the Verizon Jetpack 4G LTE MiFi are a personal favorite of Yahoo! CEO Marissa Meyer and David Rush, cofounder and CEO of Earshot.

"It is a huge time-saver because you always know you can stay connected regardless of your location," Rush told Business Insider.

Bring a reusable water bottle to fill after going through security.

"My number one tip is to invest in a water bottle with a filter," said Talia Salem, a communications rep for PlanetWildlife. "I have taken this all over the world and it has saved me hundreds of dollars."

Brand is up to you (there are dozens to choose from online). Salem is a fan of the Camelback Groove ($25) and we're crazy for AquaGear water filtration bottles ($29.99).

They remove 99.99% of tap water contaminants and can save up to 600 plastic bottles over their lifetime.

Pack a small kit with medicines, band aids, and first aid essentials.

If you've ever paid $10 for a minuscule bottle of aspirin at an airport kiosk, you'll appreciate this tip.

Stock up on essentials like pain reliever, band aids, vitamins and cough drops before heading out on your flight, and be sure to pack them in your carry-on.

12 Things Successful People Do Before Breakfast

running jogging beach sunset

"If it has to happen, then it has to happen first," writes Laura Vanderkam, time management expert and author of "What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast."

Those among us who have managed to find professional success and eke out a life actively embrace this philosophy. They must set aside their first hours of the day to invest in their top-priority activities before other people's priorities come rushing in.

Science supports this strategy. Vanderkam cites Florida State University psychology professor Roy Baumeister's famous finding that willpower is like a muscle that becomes fatigued from overuse. Diets, he says, come undone in the evening, just as poor self-control and lapses in decision-making often come later in the day. On the other hand, early mornings offer a fresh supply of willpower, and people tend to be more optimistic and ready to tackle challenging tasks.

So what do successful executives and entrepreneurs do when they are rested and fresh? From Vanderkam's study of morning rituals, we outline the following 12 things that the most successful people do before breakfast.

They wake up early.

Successful people know that time is a precious commodity. And while theirs is easily eaten up by phone calls, meetings, and sudden crises once they’ve gotten to the office, the morning hours are under their control. That’s why many of them rise before the sun, squeezing out as much time as they can to do with as they please.

In a poll of 20 executives cited by Vanderkam, 90% said they wake up before 6 a.m. on weekdays. PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi, for example, wakes at 4 a.m. and is in the office no later than 7 a.m. Meanwhile, Disney CEO Bob Iger gets up at 4:30 to read, and Square CEO Jack Dorsey is up at 5:30 to jog.

The bottom line: Productive mornings start with early wake-up calls.

They exercise before it falls off the to-do list.

The top morning activity of the rich and powerful seems to be exercise, be it lifting weights at home or going to the gym. According to Vanderkam, Xerox CEO Ursula Burns schedules an hour-long personal training session starting at 6 a.m. twice a week; Christie's CEO Steve Murphy uses the mornings to do yoga; and Starwood Hotels CEO Frits van Paasschen runs for an hour every morning starting at 5:30.

“These are incredibly busy people,” says Vanderkam. “If they make time to exercise, it must be important.”

Beyond the fact that exercising in the morning means they can’t later run out of time, Vanderkam says a pre-breakfast workout helps reduce stress later in the day, counteracts the effects of high-fat diet, and improves sleep.

They work on a top-priority business project.

The quiet hours of the morning can be the ideal time to focus on an important work project without being interrupted. What’s more, spending time on it at the beginning of the day ensures that it gets your attention before others (kids, employees, bosses) use it all up.

Vanderkam uses the example of business strategist Debbie Moysychyn, who dealt with so many ad hoc meetings and interruptions throughout the day that she felt she couldn’t get anything done. She started thinking of the early mornings as project time, and chose a top-priority project each day to focus on. Sure enough, not a single colleague dropped in on her at 6:30 a.m. She could finally concentrate.

7 Things Successful People Do In Their 30s

$
0
0

couple new

Your 30s are typically a time of settling down. You can't get away with many of the risks or bad habits that may have characterized your 20s.

We looked through the Quora threads "What is the biggest mistake you made in your 30s and what did you learn from it?" and "What do you regret not doing in your 30s?" in addition to author Mark Manson's "10 Life Lessons To Excel In Your 30s" and noticed recurring messages.

For instance, many 30-somethings focus so much on raising a family and building a career that they neglect important relationships and ignore opportunities they may never get again.

We've collected below the most common advice from those who have already experienced their 30s.

1. They spend time with people who add value to their lives.

Manson collected over 600 responses from readers who have lived through their 30s, and one of the most common pieces of advice was to stop spending time with those who don't treat you well and instead spend more time with loved ones.

"Don't just work. Make memories. The older you get, the harder it is to make meaningful relationships," writes Microsoft product designer Michael Dorian Bach on Quora.

The entrepreneur and blogger James Altucher writes on Quora that you also shouldn't forget that your parents grow older as you do. "When I was 34 I hung up the phone on my dad in an argument and never returned his calls. Six months later he had a stroke and died. A week before that he had emailed me to say hello but I didn't return the email. I'm sorry, Dad."

2. They pursue their loftier aspirations.

Twenty-somethings often begin their careers with big goals that they set aside to settle for a job they're not passionate about. Before they know it, a temporary job becomes a career.

An anonymous poster writes on Quora that the biggest mistake of his or her 30s was to become "addicted to a monthly salary," in the sense that he or she chose job security over career satisfaction.

While it's certainly more difficult to start a business or switch industries when you're 35 as opposed to 25, it's not impossible and may be the right choice.

Vera Wang, for example, didn't enter the fashion industry until she was 40 and now she's one of the world's premier designers.

3. They don't obsess about the future.

Manson recounts that one of the biggest lessons of his 20s was that there's not a magical moment where you start feeling like an adult who has it all figured out. He was happy to learn that his older readers said the same thing about their 30s.

"Unless you are already dead — mentally, emotionally, and socially — you cannot anticipate your life 5 years into the future. It will not develop as you expect. So just stop it. Stop assuming you can plan far ahead, stop obsessing about what is happening right now because it will change anyway, and get over the control issue about your life's direction," his reader going by Thomas writes.

It's healthy to have goals for you and your family, but don't stress out over specifics. Acknowledge that you still have plenty left to learn and that you're going to continue to grow as a person in unexpected ways.

4. They decide whether they want kids or not.

Kids certainly are not for everyone, but the majority of those who wrote to Manson or posted on Quora say they realized that putting off having children for an ideal situation is a bad idea. If you want to have kids, have them before it's too late.

"You don’t have the time. You don't have the money. You need to perfect your career first. They'll end your life as you know it. Oh shut up … Kids are great. They make you better in every way. They push you to your limits. They make you happy. You should not defer having kids," Manson's reader Kevin writes.

bay ridge brooklyn shore promenade bridge runner running park

5. They take care of their health.

With a growing list of responsibilities, one of the first things that can go is making exercise and healthy eating habits a priority. But think of putting forth a little effort in both areas as a long-term investment.

"Be healthy. That is priority 1. Don't get into your 30s being slow and tired all the time. It sucks," Michael Dorian Bach writes on Quora.

Adam Dehner says on Quora that "at 41, I've got a list of physical complaints that might not have come about had I been healthier."

6. They establish a financial foundation for the future.

Hopefully you used your 20s to figure out a way to pay back the student loan debt statistics say you most likely had after graduating, and also started saving. But if you hit 30 and you've set nothing aside, it's not too late. By this point, though, you need to start saving for your retirement.

Altucher writes about the many times in his 30s that he bet practically all of his money on a business venture and then lost all of it. He is doing well now, but he looks back on his failures as the result of recklessness.

Determine what percentage of your paycheck you can easily live without and consider setting up an automatic investment in a 401k and/or other savings accounts.

7. They still enjoy themselves.

And finally, just because you're not in your 20s anymore doesn't mean you need to stop having fun. Bach writes on Quora that he spent most of his 30s chasing money, and it only made him unhappy and more cynical about life.

Quora user Jeff Miller adds that he learned the best times in his 30s were going on dates with his wife and playing with his kids. Among all participants, there was a recurring theme that none of the money you work hard to make matters if you're not enjoying life.
