How Thanksgiving Took The Place Of An Awesome Military Celebration

Evacuation Day

If you asked a New Yorker, or anyone from the Northeastern Seaboard for that matter, 150 years ago if they were excited for Thanksgiving you would have received a blank stare.

Instead, that individual would likely be quickly preparing for the major late-November holiday of the time: Evacuation Day.

Prior to President Lincoln's establishment of Thanksgiving as an annual national holiday — a decision that followed the Union victory at Gettysburg in an attempt to foster national unity — Thanksgiving simply did not exist as a standard celebration.

States and communities within the Northeast celebrated the idea of giving thanks, but it was never a widespread national event linked to a certain day, as it is now.

Instead, November 25th was a day for national celebration for a vastly different reason.

On November 25, 1783 the last British troops withdrew from Manhattan, signaling the end of the Revolutionary War.

Grant Stoddard, writing for Cafe, recounts the birth of Evacuation Day:

Washington's triumphal entry into [Manhattan] was delayed as the last Union flags that still flew were torn down. British soldiers went to the pains of flying a Union flag in Battery Park and greasing the flagpole. (The spiteful lubrication was intended to make removing the flag exceptionally difficult and all but ensured that it would still be in view as their ships departed.)

But as soon as British vessels raised sail, patriots did their all to remove it and replace it with the Stars and Stripes. Wooden cleats were quickly cut and nailed into the pole.

Despite the grease, Continental Army veteran John Van Arsdale managed to clamber up the pole and rip down the flag while the British were still in view of the harbor.

In retaliation, the British fired a single cannon towards crowds lining Staten Island, but the shot fell short.

The celebration of Evacuation Day continued until the lead-up to World War I, as a secular feast featuring plentiful amounts of food and liquor. The completion of the holiday was a competitive reenactment of clambering up an oiled pole to rip down a British flag.

Prison Ship Martyrs Monument

As relations with Britain warmed — and perhaps because the US and Britain were such close allies in World War I —  interest in Evacuation Day was quickly subsumed by Thanksgiving.

But Evacuation Day should at least be brought back into the public conscience. Not because of any lingering ill will towards the British, of course. But rather because it's aa celebration, in properly unique fashion, of a newly established United States.

Along with the celebration of kicking out the British, Evacuation Day also serves as a poignant reminder that Americans died trying to free Manhattan from British rule — a place that's now the site of the US's greatest and most iconic city.

Over 10,000 Revolutionary soldiers and sailors perished aboard British prison ships in Brooklyn's Wallabout Bay (near the present-day Brooklyn Navy Yard) during the seven year British occupation of the city — a total that exceeds the number of soldiers killed in battles throughout the war.

By celebrating Evacuation Day, the US can help remember these thousands of early American patriots, and commemorate the end of America's founding conflict.

See Which States Have The Most Super-Rich Residents

As part of its annual World Ultra Wealth Report, wealth intelligence firm Wealth-X created a map showing which US states are home to the most super-rich people (defined as those with $30 million or more in assets).

Some states have more ultra-high-net-worth (UHNW) individuals than major countries. Wealth-X found that California had more super rich people than the United Kingdom (13,445 v. 11,510); New York had more than India (9,530 v. 8,595); and Texas had more than Canada (6,510 v. 5,305).

The numbers in the grey circles show how many UHNW individuals live in each state; colors indicate change in that number from 2013.Screen Shot 2014 11 26 at 6.39.35 PM

In 2014, the world’s UHNW population grew 6% to 211,275, and that group's collective wealth increased 7% to nearly $30 trillion, according to Wealth-X. Although these individuals account for only 0.004% of the world’s adult population, they control almost 13% of the world’s total wealth.

"Even though North America was strongly affected by the Global Financial Crisis, recovery for the region’s wealthiest was swift," the report noted. The chart below shows how North America's UHNW population and their wealth have grown (and are projected to grow) in this decade.Screen Shot 2014 11 26 at 6.51.42 PM

The 88-Year Evolution Of The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade

Macy's Day Parade

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade has become an irreplaceable staple of Thanksgiving festivities.

Every year, 3.5 million people flock to New York City to see the parade march down a two-and-a-half mile stretch of Manhattan.

Another 50 million people gather around their television sets to watch the event from home.

What began as a small Macy's employee-run event called Macy's Christmas Parade, has morphed into a huge production that requires almost an entire year's worth of preparation.

Macy's 88th Annual Thanksgiving Day spectacle will feature appearances from Idina Menzel, KISS, and The Vamps. Six new balloons including Paddington Bear will make their debut in the parade.

Christina Austin and Jennifer Michalski contributed to this report.

The first Macy's Day Parade was on November 27 in 1924. The parade originally featured Macy's employees and live animals from the Central Park Zoo. Floats, instead of balloons, were the main attraction.

The parade began in Harlem at 145th Street and ended in front of the Macy's flagship store on 34th Street. It was originally called the Macy's Christmas Parade, but was renamed the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in 1927.

An estimated 250,000 spectators attended the first parade. Today, about 3.5 million people attend.

Anyone who's seen a dog show has probably wondered: "What are the judges doing to those poor dogs out there?"

David Frei is the host of the National Dog Show, which airs annually on Thanksgiving Day — so, he has a pretty good understanding of what those judges are looking for in a "Best of Show" type dog.

The voice of the Westminster Kennel Club (and founder of a therapy dog charity called Angel on a Leash) tells us how show dogs are judged.

Here's Why We Celebrate Thanksgiving When We Do

thanksgiving turkey dinner

Instead of a specific date, such as Dec. 25, the weekday tells us when to start downing turkey — the fourth Thursday in November.

We've celebrated Thanksgiving then since 1941. But getting there required some complicated moves, mostly from politicians.

At the request of Congress, President George Washington tried to set a date back in 1789. He wanted America to dine and give thanks on Nov. 26, which happened to fall on a Thursday that year. But no one really listened. The timing continued to vary, and other presidents even tried to make their own proclamations.

Until President Abraham Lincoln rolled up his sleeves. His 1863 proclamation (no, not the emancipation one)  officially commemorated Thanksgiving as the last Thursday in November.

In 1939, however, the last Thursday in November fell on the last day of the month. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, concerned consumers didn't have enough time between Thanksgiving and Christmas to shop for gifts, moved Thanksgiving to the second Thursday in November. Thirty-two states followed suit, but 16 refused to listen. For the next couple years, the country celebrated Turkey Day at two different times.

Congress decided to end the confusion once-and-for-all in 1941. The House passed a joint resolution declaring the last Thursday in November as the legal day for Thanksgiving. But the Senate, thinking back to what happened in '39, amended the bill to say the "fourth" Thursday in November. Some years, November does have five Thursdays.

Roosevelt signed the bill into law on Dec. 26 that year.

So now you know.

This Map Shows What People Are Most Thankful For In Every State

Over the last few months, you may have seen your friends on Facebook posting lists of things for which they are thankful or grateful. You may have even participated.

The analytics team at Facebook recently looked at those posts to see what people around the US are most thankful for. They came up with some pretty interesting trends and fascinating maps showing the most distinctive topics by state.

One note: Facebook found that over 90% of the people who participated in this challenge were women.

Overall, "friends" were the thing for which people around the US were most thankful, followed by family, health, "family and friends," and their jobs.

Broken down by the most distinctive things for which people are thankful by state, things get a little more interesting. Map_Base

Weather was popular in the southwest and midwest. People from both Maine and Florida were thankful they lived in close proximity to the beach.

Google, YouTube, Netflix, and Pinterest all popped up on the coasts. Facebook itself doesn't appear on the map, though the data analysts note, "Facebook was mentioned more often than any other form of social media and uniformly enough to not show up on the map for any particular state."

The analysts also looked at the things people are most thankful for by age:age_topic

The analysts note, "Wee see some trends that you would expect: friends are always one of the most important things people are thankful for, 'husband' doesn't enter the charts until the early twenties, opportunities start decreasing after early thirties, and health is more important later."

You can see more about the trends and read about the methodology here.

The Most Popular Man In Every State, According To Scores Of Women Who Rated Them Anonymously

lulu alexandra chong

Who are the most popular men in the US?

You could measure men by the number of Facebook friends they have, but not all profiles are searchable. Luckily there's an app, Lulu, that pulls in men's Facebook profiles automatically.

Lulu is a controversial app that's like Yelp for men. It lets millions of women rate men they know anonymously on everything from looks, to ambition to relationships — even sex.

It has generated billions of profile views and it's used by one in four college women in the United States. Over the summer, it launched a feature for men so they could review the scores women were giving them; it has been used by more than one million guys. Additionally, Lulu recently launched anonymously messages and questions called "Truth Bombs," which generated five million views in its first month.

Business Insider worked with Lulu to find the highest-rated men in every state, according to women who know them. Men are rated on a scale of 1—10.

While there are no perfect scores in the US, a man in Texas and a man in Illinois men both received a 9.7 score. Their friends used the following hashtags to describe them: "#DoesDishes," "#RemembersBirthdays," and "#OneOfTheGoodOnes." (All descriptions in Lulu are hashtags — free form answers could put Lulu's users in libelous territory.) Business Insider blurred out any NSFW hashtags too.

How To Pour And Taste Beer Like A Pro

Craft beerBI Answers: What is the best way to pour and drink beer?

It's holiday season, a fine time for all celebratory beverages — but if you want a break from ciders, eggnogs, and other festive drinks, it's a great time for a beer.

Breweries release some great seasonal options and limited release brews around this time of year.

So why not step up your beer drinking game? Instead of just swigging from the bottle or can, do what beer experts recommend and pour your beer into the perfect tasting vessel to savor all the hoppy and malty goodness in each brew.

This involves three steps: finding the right glass, properly pouring your beer, and then tasting it while really considering the flavor. While this may seem slightly excessive, consider that beer flavor is incredibly complex — beers actually incorporate more ingredients, styles, and flavors than wines do.

There are more than 100 different styles and sub-categories of beer, with flavors that range from smoky to salty to sour and everywhere else imaginable. People who study to become a "Certified Cicerone," the beer industry's version of a sommelier, learn to distinguish not only these varieties and the different types of hops and malts used to make them, they learn the proper way to serve and describe the unique factors of each.

And while not everyone needs that level of knowledge, once you realize there's that much to know about beer out there, don't you want to learn as much it as possible?

If you're drinking good beer (craft, preferably local) in the first place, you're already doing it right, but here's how to take your beer game to the next level.

The Glass Matters

A lot of the beer glassware you see might seem like just marketing material, but that's not all those beer glasses are for. Much of what we taste is due to what we smell, and it's hard to catch a whiff of what's inside a bottle or can while you drink it. A nice wide top on a glass will help you get a big whiff of the beer before you drink it.

The head on your beer — that inch or so of foam at the top of your glass is very important. It helps enhance the flavor of your beer by capturing many of the compounds in beer that create its aroma, and through that, its flavor. For that reason, different styles of beer work best with different glasses.

As this Cicerone-recommended Beer Advocate article explains, most styles of beer are best drank from one (or more) of ten basic styles of glassware. This infographic details this full line of glassware, and the beers that go with them, but we'll include a few basic choices here.

1. The classic pint glass.

This glass usually comes in either a 16 (standard US) or 20 ounce (imperial or "nonic") size and is the most versatile of glasses. It's a great option for dozens of beer styles, including American lagers and pale ales, saisons, and most stouts. It's a great glass for beers you're going to drink in large quantities and for beers that need a large head on top.

beer glasses info2. The stemmed tulip glass.

This one you might frequently see in your local craft beer bar. It's a great option for rich, flavorful beers like double IPAs, Belgian strong ales, some saisons, and lambics. The stem makes it easy for a drinker to hold without warming the beer too much. The wide mouth creates a thick foamy head that enhances those already rich aromas.

beer glasses info3. The snifter.

Originally designed for brandy, turns out to be a great vessel for some other strong ales like barleywines, tripels, and imperial stouts. It's a smaller volume glass, which is great for beers that'll knock you out with their alcohol levels often being in the 10% range, and its shape makes it easy to swirl and agitate the aroma enhancing particles known as "volatiles" in those brews.

beer glasses infoEven if you don't have these exact glasses in your home, re-think the glassware you have available — a lot of things that work in a snifter also would fit well in a big wine glass.

2. The Pour

pouring beer

Once you've got your brew and your glassware, you want to pour it to create the perfect head on that beverage.

When pouring from a bottle hold your glass at a 45 degree angle until it's about half full. At that point, gently tilting it upright and pouring into the center should create the perfect inch of head (certain beers, like weizens and Belgian ales, usually get a bigger head, from two to four inches).

Many interesting unfiltered beers will have a small amount of yeast in the bottom of the bottle. Whether you drink this or not is up to you — it'll generally make the beer a bit cloudier and can add some good flavor. If you don't want any extra yeast, watch carefully and don't pour out the dregs of the bottle.

If you are pouring from a tap, hold the glass at a 45 degree angle about an inch away from the spigot. Open the tap fully and fill to about halfway, making sure the tap never touches the glass or the beer. At the halfway point, tilt the glass upright and continue letting beer flow into the center, moving the glass down to make sure there's a little space between the tap and the brew.

3. The Taste

As Beer Advocate explains, "When analyzing a beer, you can't just swill it down, burp and say 'it's great' or 'it's crap.'" Or, you can, but we're trying to drink like a pro now, remember? This way you'll be able to describe your beer better than any wine snob.

Take a look at the beer itself. Notice the color, the head, the bubbles.

If it's in a glass that won't overflow like a snifter, swirl it lightly, like you would a nice whiskey. This pulls out the aroma.

Take a whiff. Do if first through your nose, then through your nose with your mouth open, and then through your mouth. The way your nose and mouth are connected mean that you'll catch slightly different variations depending on how you smell something.

Take a decent sized sip and hold it in your mouth for a moment. See how your tastebuds react, what flavors come to mind. Notice the consistency and mouthfeel of the beverage. Afterwards, see if you notice any new flavors as you breathe out.

Continue, and enjoy.

Black Friday crowds

Retailers around the country opened their doors on Thanksgiving evening to the massive crowds already gathered outside, waiting in preparation for the deep discounts that have become the trademark of "Black Friday."

Some 140 million shoppers are expected to line up this weekend, the most popular shopping weekend of the year in the US. It is estimated that these shoppers will spend over $36 billion during the course of the weekend.

By Friday morning, Wal-Mart had already seen 22 million customers pass through its doors, the company said.

Here's what the crowds looked like around the US.

Many lined up hours, or even days, in advance. These intrepid folks braved cold temperatures in Indianapolis, Indiana to take advantage of the deals at a local Best Buy.Black Friday crowds

The 16 Best Snacks To Eat At Your Desk

lunch desk eating workWhat you eat all day doesn't just impact your health and weight; it affects your productivity, too.

"If you eat high fat, high sugar meals and snacks you will be sleepy and have low energy overall," says Lisa De Fazio, a healthy lifestyle expert and registered dietitian. "High fat foods take more work to digest. Candy causes sugar to spike in your blood stream then crash, and you also may have an upset stomach. Who can be productive with all of this going on?"

But, unfortunately, she says, many people tend to make bad eating decisions during the workday.

"Boredom and stress often lead to mindless snacking on things like sweets and chips," De Fazio explains. "Also, there may be limited healthy food choices or too many temptations around the office, like candy dishes on your colleagues' desks, cupcakes for birthdays, or greasy pizza during lunch meetings."

Time — or lack thereof — also plays a part. "One of the reasons people don't stick to their healthy eating resolutions of bringing their own homemade prepared food, rather than ordering or eating out, is because of a lack of time," explains Nicole Maftoum, a Lebanese clinical dietitian. "In a fast-paced world, fast food comes as the optimum solution."

Maftoum says sleep deprivation also affects appetite and pushes one to eat twice the amount of calories that they'd typically consume in a day.

The experts say all of these factors make it easy for us to develop bad eating habits at work — but they're terrible excuses.

Luckily, there are plenty of quick, easy, and inexpensive healthy snack options.

Almonds

Almonds are a great source of protein and healthy fat that is satisfying. "They contain nine essential nutrients; have the highest rate of proteins when compared to other nuts; have the highest rate of fiber (3.5g per 23 pieces) when compared to other nuts; are rich in Vitamin E (23 pieces provide 35% of the daily value of Vitamin E); and contain monounsaturated fats that help increase HDL levels," Maftoum says.

Low-fat popcorn

This low-calorie snack will satisfy your craving for something salty and crunchy, and it’s also a good source of fiber, De Fazio says.

Fresh fruit

Fruits are packed with vitamins and minerals, and are full of great natural sweetness, Maftoum says. "They are also a great source of antioxidants needed for a stronger immune system and a better performance at work."

A Photographer Quit His Job To Document The Aftermath Of Isolated Plane Crashes Around The Globe

happy end 1 4

In 2010, photographer Dietmar Eckell was the general manager for Southeast Asia at a German Fortune 500 company, working and living comfortably. But, since his childhood, Eckell says he's felt the strong pull of "wanderlust," so that year he resigned his post and began traveling the world, documenting abandoned and decaying relics of earlier times.

Since then, he's traveled almost 75,000 miles and visited four continents. "I haven't regretted it for one day," Eckell tells Business Insider.

For one of his main projects, Eckell researched and photographed 15 downed planes around the globe. The series is titled "Happy End," because not a single passenger died in any of the crashes. "Pictures of fatal airplane crashes are all over the news. There's no need for me to document graves," Eckell told Slate. "I want to surprise the viewer with stories of heroes and miracles and give their viewing experience a 'happy end.'"

Acting as part detective, part explorer, and part artist, Eckell traveled by any means necessary to some of the most remote areas of the world, tracking down these abandoned planes, many of which were difficult to locate.

"It's just a great feeling to finally sit on the wing of a plane that you've been trying to reach for years," he says.

Eckell has shared some of his photos here with us. For the full story on many of the planes he visited, we suggest you buy his beautiful new book

Douglas C-47, part of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Crashed near Snag, Yukon, Canada, in 1950. All 6 survived.

Eckell had no exact location for the C-47 when he arrived in Snag, Canada. After speaking with the locals, he secured a flight with a friendly pilot who flew him over the wreckage. Later, Eckell attempted to reach the plane on the ground, but that proved treacherous as the land around the wreck was very swampy. Traveling by ATV, "we had to pull each other out with the trench every five minutes and maybe made one mile per hour," he says. Finally, he arrived at the wreck and documented what was left before the whole thing eventually sinks into the bog.happy end 2 1 2000

Grumman HU-16 Albatross. Suspected drug-running plane. Crashed near Puerto Escondido, Mexico, in 2004. All survived.

Eckell had heard rumors of a "mysterious drug plane" on a remote beach in Mexico, so when found a cheap flight to Ixtapa, he jumped on the opportunity. Upon landing, he rented a car and traveled 45o miles to Puerto Escondido. The locals told him that after the crash, the survivors carried as much cocaine as they could from the wreckage, but were subsequently eaten by crocodiles in the lagoons nearby. Eckell isn't sure if he believes this.

Today, the airplane is almost gone. Eckell told Slate, "I document these structures before nature takes them back. Maybe it's a way to make their stories immortal."

happy end 3 2 mexico 2004

Avro Shackleton. Crashed in Polisario-controlled area of the Western Sahara in 1994. 19 survived.

Eckell found this wreck in the "no-man's land" between Morocco and Mauritania. After days of travel, including 26 hours of non-stop driving and 20 hours on Mauritania's famous iron ore train, he finally arrived at the Avro Shackleton in a remote desert setting. He stood on the roof of his car and held his tripod above his head to get the shot, before making the treacherous drive home. happy end 43 western sahara 1994
