This Chart Reveals The Age Distribution At Every Major Social Network

$
0
0

Social networks continue to be popular with teenagers, but their largest group is actually a bit older.

At some of the biggest social networks like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, and Pinterest, the largest share of the user base comes from internet users in their late 20s and early 30s, according to a new report from BI Intelligence.

This changes when you look at relatively newer social networks, however.

GWI Age DistributionSocial networks like Instagram, Tumblr, and YouTube attract a younger demographic, with the largest user base coming from internet users aged 16 to 24.

Tumblr, in particular, is incredibly popular among teens and early 20-somethings, with almost 50% of its user base between the ages of 16 and 24.

Interestingly enough, both Tumblr and Instagram also have the lowest share of older users, with less than 5% of their user base coming from internet users aged 55 to 64.

Even though social networks are already incredibly popular with teens and millennials, social networks are still seeing user growth from these demographics.

In the US, for example, 18- to 29-year-olds actually increased their adoption of Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, Google+, Pinterest, and Tumblr between the fall of 2013 and the spring of 2014.

Here's The Cheap Truth About The New Bone Broth Trend Everyone's Wasting Their Money On

$
0
0

beef brothThere’s a new food trend out: it’s called “bone broth.”

Goop is into it. Quartz is into it. There’s an instagram hashtag. New York City has recently acquired a “take-out window for sippable broths.” A small coffee cup full of bone broth costs $4.

Here’s the thing: all broth (save veggie broth) is made with bones. That’s how you make broth!

Broth is also called stock (that was trendy for a few years leading up to 2014). This concept is roughly 20,000 years old. Basically as soon as humans figured out a way to keep boiling water encased in something fire-resistant while cooking, someone also figured out how to put a leftover animal carcass in that boiling water. And there bone broth began.

This is one of the best examples I’ve seen recently of The Quaint Economy. The Quaint Economy, as a refresher, is the idea that you can create value by creating a good story about a product. More specifically, it’s usually a story that involves cozy nostalgia for a simpler time. a time before perfect reproductions and cheap commodities. Often, a time before flushing toilets (though artisanal outhouses have not yet become a trend, thank god).

But back to the broth. Wise Choice Market, an online store, sells beef bone broth for $33.75 (you get 2 24 fl. oz. broth packets)*.

bone broth

Here’s the story on the website:

“Following traditional methods, the beef bones are cooked gently for 48 hours with organic onions, garlic, and celtic sea salt in filtered water. Organic apple cider vinegar is added to pull the vitamins and minerals from the bones into the stock. Finally, organic parsley is added for the extra minerals to finish the just-like-homemade beef stock properly.”

At Walmart, you can get 3.25 oz of beef boullion cubes (makes 25 cups of broth) for $2.

Perhaps a closer parallel is the Superior Touch Better Than Bouillon Organic Beef Base (8 oz, pack of 6) for $35 at Walmart. That’s the same number of ounces at roughly the same price as the bone broth.

Except the Walmart product is concentrated, and actually makes 9.5 quarts of broth.

Broth

It’s hard to tell here what exactly the value is in the “bone broth” rebranding. Obviously using expensive, organic ingredients is going to make the final product more expensive. But how much is the cost of production and how much is a premium charged to be part of a trend story?

(h/t Ben Walsh)

* Wise Choice Market is a Canadian company with some services based in the US, so these might be Canadian dollar prices? But it seems like it's American dollars, since the shipping info assumes a US address. The exchange rate today is 1.14 CAD : 1 USD.

Don Corleone Godfather house_edited 1

The Staten Island mansion made famous by the Corleone family in "The Godfather" is on sale for $2.9 million.

The mansion was the location for several famous scenes in the 1970 film, like Connie Corleone's wedding and Don Corleone's famous "You ask me to do murder" scene.

The house was originally built in 1930 for former Staten Island borough president Joseph Palma.
"Godfather" actor Gianni Russo from the film showed the house to producers because he grew up down the street.

The five-bedroom, four-bathroom house has been renovated with more modern furniture and brighter colors, and the backyard now sports a pool. There are custom moldings throughout the house, and the basement now boasts an English pub.

Despite being gut renovated in 2012, the outside of the house still has the English Tudor style with a very green yard.

The backyard now has a pool.

The 6,248-square-foot home sits on 24,000-square-foot grounds.

Cash-Strapped Americans Are Abandoning Restaurants

$

Olive GardenAmericans are abandoning restaurants, with financial concerns named as the culprit.

The average American goes out to dinner 74 times a year, The Washington Post's Wonkblog reports, citing the consumer research firm NPD Group. That's the lowest reading in three decades.

The popularity of takeout and prepared foods, like frozen pizzas, has partially contributed to the decline, reports Roberto Ferdman at Wonkblog.

But Americans are also worried about cash and are looking to cut back.

"Consumers spent roughly 7 percent less on eating out in 2010, compared to the year before, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics," Ferdman writes. "Meanwhile, people are buying more groceries, because it's cheaper."

The Federal Reserve Board reports that all groups of consumers had a lower mean income in 2013 than they did in 2007. Mean wealth also declined for all the groups.

The trend is hurting business at casual dining establishments like Olive Garden, Applebee's, and Red Lobster.

The restaurants have tried implementing more promotions to lure back customers.

Even McDonald's customers are complaining that the fast-food fare is too expensive, according to a Bloomberg report

The retail sector is also hurting.

Low-income and middle-class retailers including Wal-Mart, J.C. Penney Co., Target, Macy's, and Family Dollar have reported disappointing earnings this year.

Executives at these retailers say that Americans are increasingly unwilling to spend money on discretionary items, despite modest gains in the job market.

"Low-end and middle-income retailers are still suffering because people are buying so close to need," Brian Yarbrough, consumer analyst at Edward Jones, told Business Insider. "In the past, retailers could depend on people spending a little more."

Why This UPenn Professor Will Let Students Watch Porn Throughout His Class

kenneth goldsmith

An undergraduate creative writing course became a news story recently after the Vice site Motherboard revealed that the University of Pennsylvania was offering a spring semester class called "Wasting time on the Internet." Things got meta when thousands of people wasted time at work sharing links to the course description and related stories on social media.

The professor teaching the course is the acclaimed American poet Kenneth Goldsmith. He tells Business Insider that he of course meant for the title of his weekly experimental class to be provocative, but he figured it would only grab attention within a limited sphere. In the three-hour class, students will distract themselves across as many screens as they like without communicating verbally before writing a creative piece on their experience.

Goldsmith explains that he was frustrated by thinkpieces about the internet making us dumber, along with things like the "anti-screen" movement. "I'm thinking, 'No, the internet is actually making us smarter. We're reading and writing more than we have in a generation, and yet somehow it's not being proposed or being seen as being properly literary," he says.

He says that his students will be spending the rest of their lives in front of computer and smartphone screens, and so he wants to teach his students that they don't need to be ashamed of their habits.

"I think that we are a very guilt-ridden culture about the time that we're spending on the internet. I'm trying to get rid of those notions," he says.

Goldsmith is not going to impose any restrictions on his students, either. He explains:

If they want to watch three hours of porn and write a great piece of erotica inspired by it, I'm all for it. If they want to troll right wing sites and grab dialogue for a spy story that's nefarious and hate-filled, then they can do that as well. I mean — what they want to do. I feel that just by their engagement on the internet they'll be expressing themselves. Who they are, their likes, their interests, their politics. One thing they could do is they could check their browser history and present it as a memoir to me, which I think would be indicative of who they are. As indicative as a conventional memoir.

Despite what the above may suggest, he's approaching this class from a highbrow perspective. There will be supplemental readings from the likes of André Breton, the founder of Surrealism.

"Breton proposes that the best state of the entire culture would be sleep walking and a dream state. And then I really sort of think we're in that state right now, induced by our electronics and our distractions. So the idea is to tap into a new electronic collective unconscious and see what kind of new automatic writing emerges out of that," Goldsmith says.

Goldsmith says there were critics saying, "Why would I spend $50,000 for my kid to waste time on the internet?," but the class has been very popular at UPenn among both students and faculty. Goldsmith tells us that hundreds of students applied to the class, but he limited it to just 15 students. He also says the English Department has been supportive and the school enjoys the publicity.

To Goldsmith, he will be exposing his students to the artistic tradition of letting your mind wander in the pursuit of creative inspiration. If he's successful, they'll stop seeing their social media-posting, listicle-reading, YouTube-watching habits as dirty indulgences, and appreciate them as engaging aspects of the modern world.

"This is not television; this is not passive," he says. "We're actually actively seeking out content that we find stimulating. What could be better than that?"

Netscape Cofounder Jim Clark May Have Just Built One Of The Fastest Yachts In The World

jim clark yacht

Netscape cofounder Jim Clark is no stranger to the high seas.

The 70-year-old serial entrepreneur — who's now worth $1.4 billion after investments in Apple, Facebook, and Twitter — owns two massive super yachts that he uses to compete in long-distance races.

However it's his brand-new boat, named "Comanche," that's grabbed the attention of the yachting world.

Comanche is a 100-foot monohull sailboat that can reach speeds of up to 40 mph. According to CNN, it took Clark's team a year to finish it.

The tech billionaire told CNN that the primary goal is for Comanche "to be a record breaker" and "go really, really fast."

The yacht will get its first chance with an upcoming race that takes competitors 630 nautical miles from Sydney, Australia to Hobart, the capital of Tasmania. It will be the first outing for Comanche.

"I wish Sydney-Hobart wasn't the first race, in fact you couldn't choose a worst race for our first race. It's like we've gone straight from the gym to the heavyweight championship of the world,"  Ken Read, Comanche's skipper, said to CNN." And it could end up like an F1 car blowing its engine on its first outing on the track."

Comanche and its 22-person crew have already set sail for Australia, where they will prepare for the Hobart race, which usually starts just after Christmas.

Clark's other boat, the 295-foot "Athena," is currently for sale for $75 million.

Check out this video that shows how fast Comanche can really go.

Kim Kardashian And Kanye West May Be Flipping Their New $20 Million LA Mansion

Update: The listing for Kardashian and West's home was taken down shortly after this article was posted. We'll update when we know more.

That was fast.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are selling the 8,000-square-foot French country-style home they purchased for a reported $19.75 million in August, Curbed LA reports.

The mansion just reappeared on real estate listing site Zillow with a $19.99 million price tag.

The home, which was formerly owned by Lisa Marie Presley, includes eight bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, two swimming pools, two spas, and even a vineyard on its three acre property.

"I am so ready to be out of my mom's house, you have no idea," Kim told People magazine in August. "We wanted to be away and have more privacy ... but it will be nice to still be close."

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West bought an $11 million mansion last year in Bel-Air — but decided to sell it because they wanted more space. Apparently their $20 million Hidden Hills estate wasn't spacious enough.

The 8,000-square-foot estate is located on 3 acres of land right down the street from Kim's mom's house, where the couple had previously been staying with baby North.

The home — which boasts a very grand entrance —was previously owned by Elvis' daughter, Lisa Marie Presley.

How Silicon Valley Cafeteria Food Got So Gourmet

fedele bauccio bon appetit

Silicon Valley was a completely different world when Fedele Bauccio started his restaurant company in 1986.

Called Bon Appetit Management Company, Bauccio's business sought to completely revolutionize the corporate cafeteria.

"I was with a public company for many years, so I understood what was going on there, but I was kind of appalled at the state of corporate food — the mystery meat, frozen food. I felt strongly that I could create a restaurant company with talented chefs and change that part of the industry," Bauccio told Business Insider. "That was unheard of in 1986."

One of Bon Appetit's first clients was a young company called Oracle, whose CEO, Larry Ellison, wanted to set up a paninoteca, or classic Italian sandwich shop, at the company's Redwood Shores campus.

"Being Italian, I said, 'I could do that,'" Bauccio said. "But we knew a sandwich shop wasn't going to last long."

What they decided to do instead would change Silicon Valley culture forever. Bon Appetit installed a number of small, customized restaurants — Japanese, Mediterranean, and Indian eateries, for example —  situated among the headquarters' many office buildings.

Soon, other companies were following suit.

"We got lucky because we were in the middle of this startup world in San Francisco and Silicon Valley," Bauccio said. "Once we started doing things with Oracle and others, other companies felt that they should do it also."

Bon Appetit currently operates more than 500 cafes across the country, including at offices for Google, eBay, Adobe, LinkedIn, Uber, and Yahoo, among many others. They also operate restaurants at 200 universities and several museums.

With more than 30 cafes serving nutritious, free food to about 30,000 employees at their Mountain View headquarters, Google has become the gold standard of dining in Silicon Valley. Each cafe has its own concept — from Mexican cuisine to vegan specialties — and a menu focused on using local ingredients.

Variety is key for tech workers, many of whom spend more time in the office than they do out of it.

"These people creating new products now — there’s no beginning or end of the day for them. They’re here all the time," Bauccio said. "No one wants to eat in the same place five days a week. It challenged us to create different experiences that create what I call 'casual collisions' — that as people break bread together, they come up with new ideas and innovations."

Bon Appetit's latest venture at Google is Kitchen Sync, a health-and-wellness cafe that has its own teaching kitchen run by top-notch chefs. The idea is that employees can learn solid skills for healthy cooking that they can eventually bring them home to their families.

kitchen sync google

Bon Appetit's most popular venture at Google, however, has been Cafe Baadal, an Indian restaurant with a prix fixe menu and delicious small plates. Googlers can make reservations, and many people stand in line to grab a bite.

"It was in an old cafeteria that they had, and we wanted to change it up," Bauccio said. "It's healthy, and the flavors are great."

According to Bauccio, Bon Appetit has a few major concerns when creating new cafes. First, seasonal and fresh ingredients are of supreme importance, and the company insists that chefs use produce grown within 50 miles of a particular cafe.

Authenticity is also incredibly important. Before they determine a menu for a particular cafe, Bon Appetit conducts multiple focus groups to make sure they are well acquainted with the culture and demographics of the company.

The variety is obviously great for employees, but it's attractive to chefs, too. Unlike in the restaurant industry, chefs who cook in corporate cafeterias work standard hours and enjoy employee benefits. Bon Appetit employs many talented chefs, including several who have won the prestigious James Beard Award.

"We now have more resumes than we can use. With us, they can use their love, passion, and soul, and make relationships with local farmers," Bauccio said. "Once we get chefs, they don't leave."

Step Inside The $17 Million Brooklyn Home That Was Built By A Mobster And Is Owned By A Russian Heiress

brooklyn house of the day $17 million

The most expensive home in Brooklyn at $30 million has suffered a steep discount to $17 million, according to Curbed New York.

Though it has significantly dropped in price from last year, the Mill Basin mansion keeps its title as Brooklyn’s most expensive property. The chop seems to stem from the fact that the original listing included a guest house on the property while the current listing does not.

The gated four-story compound includes five bedrooms, 9 and a half bathrooms, and over 14,700 square feet of space.

Outside, the mansion has a 1,000-square-foot pool, a 40-person pavilion for parties, and 30,000 square feet of outdoor gardens.

There’s also a downstairs wine cellar, 257-feet of waterside frontage, a four-car garage, and a two-boat marina. It's a pretty nice spread that looks like it could belong in Miami instead of deep Brooklyn.

The mansion was originally built and owned by John Rosatti, a multi-millionaire with mob connections to the Colombo crime family. Known as an “earner,” he generated millions for their illegal activities with his car dealerships, according to the Village Voice.

He then sold the property to Russian heiress Galina Anisimova (mother of the "Russian Paris Hilton") for $3 million in the late ‘90s after he got caught up in some legal drama for building his home on wetlands.

Anisimova remains the current owner, according to public records found by The Real Deal.

James Cornell and Leslie Marshall of Corcoran Real Estate Group are currently sharing the listing.

Welcome to 2458 National Drive, Brooklyn's most expensive property.

The home is perched right on the Mill Basin waterfront.

For those who don't know where that is, it's in deep Brooklyn — far, far away from Manhattan.

Bill Nye: America Is Making A Big Mistake

Here's How To Figure Out Everything Google Knows About You

Larry Page

When you use Google, you are making a deal. You get to use Gmail and search and YouTube and Google Maps for free and in exchange, you agree to share information about yourself. Google gets to sell that information to advertisers.

The more Google knows about you, the more it can match you to an advertiser who thinks you are an ideal customer. Advertisers are willing to pay more for ads served to ideal potential customers. For instance, airlines want to target people who love to travel. Children's clothing makers want to target parents.

Google uses a lot of methods to learn about you. There's the stuff you tell Google outright when you sign up for its services, like Gmail and Google Maps, or via an Android phone, like your name, phone number, location, and so on. Google also deduces information about you from watching your internet searches (what do you search for? click on?) and from the stuff you do with Google's products.

By visiting a site called "Ads Settings" you can see what Google knows about you.

It's not that easy to find Ads Settings. First, click on the link below or type it into your browser: https://www.google.com/settings/

Then click on "Account history".

Scroll down to Ads and click on "Edit settings".

This page shows you what Google thinks it knows about you including your age bracket, the languages you speak and ...

Google tracking 2

... including your interests.

From that page, you can edit that information or "opt out" of allowing Google to share your information with advertisers.
