14 Things You Probably Do That Infuriate Your Bartender

0

bartender

Bartending sounds like a cool job in theory. You learn how to make drinks, watch funny drunk people all night, and are paid to be in a bar.

But the reality is a whole lot less fun since bartending is a service job that can often show the unflattering side of humanity. Sloppy drunks, spills, rude clientele, and annoying orders are what bartenders around the world look forward to each night.

In a recent /r/AskReddit thread, bartenders on Reddit answered the question “What is something that we do at bars that piss you off?” Keep reading to learn how to treat your bartender better.

1. Don’t snap your fingers (or do anything else annoying to get their attention).

“This isn't work. This is a bar. Everyone gets served in a timely fashion unless I'm avoiding you, which I have no problem telling that I am, and you'll have to wait for the other bartender. I'm not your personal bartender, so don't yell at me when I'm taking orders. If I skip you, it was probably an accident (unless I've told you previously that I will not wait on you). Just stay calm and you'll get your drink. Yelling, screaming and waving makes me move towards you slower or not at all. I know everyone thinks it's easy to bartend a high volume bar on a weekend, but it's not.

"Just be respectful and tip accordingly and you will be acknowledged and served all night." - jasanova

2. Don’t haggle.

“Seriously, I don't own the bar and I'm not in any position to give you discounts without taking it from my tips.” - Phr4gG3r

paying at the bar with cash bar tab bill

3. Don’t get cute.

"A girl in a nightclub went to pay me once, and then every time I went to get the note she would quickly pull away as if it was some hilarious game. This happened a few times in the middle of a busy shift until I started to take her drinks back and she finally coughed up.

"She wasn't such a fan of the game though when I did the same back to her with her change.” - qwertylaura123

bartender

4. Don’t ask why you need to show your ID.

"The folks who throw a fit when I ask to see their ID are the worst. I live in a college town where underage kids are constantly trying to be served alcohol and members of ATF are looking to bust bars. Just hand over the ID! Even if you're not getting a drink, here you have to be 21 to be inside a bar! You're not funny!”

5. Don’t ask for the impossible.

"'Give me something that's strong, cheap and tastes good!' You can have any two of the three." - zerobass

drinks bartender

6. Know what you want (and be specific).

“I don't mind being creative and coming up with a drink for you, but you have to point me in the right direction: 'Give me something good with GIN in it ' Alright, now we're talking! ' I don't know what I want, but maybe I will start with a light beer.' Okay good.

"I guess the point is that you need to have your shit together. You were not magically teleported to the bar, have an idea of what you want to drink before you get the bartender's attention.” - CobraCornelius

Old Fashioned Bartender

7. Don’t try to get more alcohol by asking for “less ice.”

“Customers that ask for less ice then complain that their cocktail doesn't have any alcohol in it. Less ice = more mixer = diluted alcohol flavor.” - stickeykey_board

Cocktail from JBird

8. Don’t tell your bartender to make your drink strong.

"You are essentially asking me to steal from my company to give you more alcohol. And that $1 for the extra $6 worth of booze I just stole from my company is definitely not worth risking my job for.” - FrisbeeKing

Bartender mixologist

9. Don’t order your drinks one at a time.

"Please order all of your drinks at the same time! Don't order two Makers & Cokes, I go grab the Makers, make the drinks, put it back, and you say 'Make that three.' I go get the Makers, make one more and you say, '... and a vodka gimlet.'

"Just order three Makers & Cokes and one vodka gimlet. Ordering drinks one at a time doubles the transaction time. People are waiting.” - GrammarIsPhun

bartender

10. Always order Guinness first.

"A Guinness takes a relatively long time to make as you have to leave it to settle 3/4ths of the way through pouring it, so you learn to make the Guinness first out of a round of drinks to cut down waiting time.” - MarlonBrandoLovesYou

[Ed note: This is how long it takes to pour a Guinness]

Guinness cheers

11. Don’t transfer your drink to the dining room.

"[Don't] order drinks/appetizers at the bar, sit there for 30 minutes and then leave and go to the dining room to eat dinner. We transfer your tab, clean/re-set your seat and then you tip out the server — not us. More of a restaurant policy issue, but as a bartender, I always close my tab when I leave someone else's bar.” - sharkabroad

The Restaurant at Meadowood bar

12. Don’t hit on the bartender.

“Don't hit on me. I'm here to work, not date. Besides in a bar full of drunk and available people, why would you want to hit on the only sober one?” - NoPhilosophy

Female bartender pouring a beer

13. Don’t put trash in your glass.

“Having to cram your hand inside and grope around for [trash] among the dregs of your beer is not pleasant. Its gotta come out before going in the dishwasher so please just leave it on the table or better yet find a bin. Don’t use the glass.” - Beef_souls

14. Be ready to pay.

“When you order drinks, I'll usually tell you how much it will cost up front. This is so you can prepare payment while I'm making the cocktails. Don't sit there and watch me make the drinks and then decide to find your wallet or crumpled up bills when I'm done. Remember, people are waiting.” - GrammarIsPhun

The Inspiring Life Story Of Alibaba Founder Jack Ma, Now The Richest Man In China

0

alibaba jack ma

Fresh off the biggest IPO in history, Alibaba founder and chairman Jack Ma is now the richest person in China.

Ma is now worth an estimated $25 billion, which includes his 7.8% stake in Alibaba and a nearly 50% stake in payment processing service Alipay.

Ma is a true rags-to-riches story. He grew up poor in communist China, failed his college entrance exam twice, and was rejected from dozens of jobs, including one at KFC, before finding success with his third internet company, Alibaba.

Jack Ma (a.k.a. Ma Yun) was born on October 15, 1964, in Hangzhou, located in the southeastern part of China. He has an older brother and a younger sister. He and his siblings grew up at a time when communist China was increasingly isolated from the West, and his family didn't have much money when they were young.

 Source: 60 Minutes, USA Today

Ma was scrawny and often got into fights with classmates. "I was never afraid of opponents who were bigger than I," he recalls in "Alibaba," a book by Liu Shiying and Martha Avery. Still, Ma had hobbies just like any other kid. He liked collecting crickets and making them fight, and was able to distinguish the size and type of cricket just by the sound it made.

After then-US president Richard Nixon visited Hangzhou in 1972, Ma's hometown became a tourist mecca. As a teenager, Ma started waking up early to visit the city's main hotel, offering visitors tours of the city in exchange for English lessons. The nickname "Jack" was given to him by a tourist he befriended.

Forget Comfort — These Are The Real Advantages Of Private Jets

0
0

gulfstream g450 private jet

Which is more valuable? Time or money? As it turns out, if you can save one, you can save the other.

Private jets are a way to make that win-win happen.

Sure, private jets are swanky. But if you can spend less money to get an equally luxurious experience in first or business class, why not fly with an airline?

A quick search turns up one-way first class flights from New York to Los Angeles for about $1,000.

The same flight with private jet charter company JetSuite costs over $4,500 per passenger.

That's a lot of money to justify for the added luxury of having no one else around.

To find out what the real benefits to flying private are, we spoke with Steve Cass, vice president of communications at private jet maker Gulfstream.

It all comes down to saving time, which means saving money.

Less Time On The Ground

It starts on the way to the airport. Small jets don't need the huge runways and staffs offered by major airports, so they can fly out of smaller spots.

There are many more minor airports than major ones, so you often don't have to travel as far to get to one. And they're less congested, making the experience more pleasant.

You don't have to deal with the TSA or long check-in lines, so you can you arrive at airport minutes, not hours, in advance. That's time, money, and aggravation saved. And when you get off, your bags are thrown right into your car, so there's no time spent at the baggage carousel.

Plus, you fly when you want. Flying commercial, Cass said, "we adjust our schedule to meet the needs of the airline." In the sphere of private aviation, it's the other way around.

A Faster Trip

Private flights aren't tied to the same hub and spoke networks used by airlines, so if your plane has enough fuel capacity to reach your destination, you'll go direct. "That saves a huge amount of time," Cass said.

Private jets are usually designed to climb faster than airliners, so they're above crummy weather sooner. They usually fly faster, too.

Commercial jets cruise around 35,000 feet; smaller jets typically fly higher. That puts them above the traffic, so their routes are more direct — they don't compete with bigger planes for space. The extra flexibility lets the jets capture better winds and avoid adverse weather, too.

Privacy In the Air To Get Work Done

On top of moving faster and wasting less time, it's easier to get work done in the air when you're alone. Even in first or business class, Cass pointed out, it's risky to have confidential conversations, because you don't know who may be around.

He also directed us to a 2009 survey by the National Business Aviation Association. Respondents rated themselves as 20% more productive while on company aircraft than in the office. Their counterparts flying commercial reported a 40% drop in productivity.

So the next time you wonder why companies spend tens of millions to buy their own jets instead of putting employees on commercial fights, know that it's not about creature comforts. It's about saving time and money.

The Definitive Explanation For Why Beer Gets Skunked

0

Skunked Beer

BI Answers: Why Does Beer Get Skunked?

It's fall. Time for football tailgates, baseball playoffs, and Oktoberfest — which technically began in September, but no one is going to stop you from celebrating. So go ahead and pop open a beer.

But sometimes an awful thing happens when you lift that cool glistening bottle to your lips. Something tastes off. The beer is bad.

It's skunked.

Skunked is really bad. If you've experienced it, you know, and you don't want it to happen again.

The Alchemist Heady Topper Beer Cans

Some people blame bad refrigeration practices — letting the beer go from cool to warm and back again — but even though that can make beer stale by increasing the rate of oxidation, it's not the culprit for that skunky taste.

Skunked beer is caused by a specific chemical reaction triggered by exposure to light, as explained in the latest Reactions video by the American Chemical Society.

Brewers know this — there's a reason why craft beer comes in brown bottles or cans, as opposed to green or — shudder — clear glass.

What's more, the name skunk is particularly relevant.

Beer gets its bitterness and a lot of its flavor from hops, one of the main ingredients needed to make the delicious beverage.

They're added to the wort, or not-yet-beer, during the brewing process. When boiled, hops release iso-alpha acids into the liquid.

So far so good.

But if beer is exposed to sunlight, the sun's power breaks down those iso-alpha acids. The resulting compounds bind with proteins that contain sulfur.

This creates a new chemical — one that's almost exactly identical to the one released by skunks.

Chemical That Causes Skunked BeerIt's incredibly potent too.

People can taste this chemical in concentrations of one part per billion. As the video explains, "if you filled an Olympic-sized swimming pool with beer, one eyedropper of this stuff would change the way it tasted." Which would ruin an otherwise delightful Olympic-sized swimming pool full of beer.

So treat your beer with respect and keep it out of the sun, especially if the beer is in a clear glass. Supposedly, enough light can get through a green bottle to skunk it, if given enough time.

Watch the full video for more.

How To Dress Like A Wall Street Hotshot Without Spending Cash Like One

0

Fashionable man on his phone during Milan fashion week

This one comes straight from you — our gentlemen readers.

It has come to our attention that while some of you out there would love to dress fresh to death at all times, you believe that achieving that goal is beyond your means.

It's not.

Affordable men's fashion is everywhere, and with a few key pieces, you can make your wardrobe look crisp and tidy. Business Insider reached out to some of our favorite men's fashion bloggers and retailers to get their opinion on where to get a stylish wardrobe without breaking the bank.

Think about it: They love clothes, but a brother still needs money to eat.

We've organized this list by item, and with each item we've included a list of awesome retailers — including some you've probably never heard of — that carry what you need, in a reasonable price range.

Special thanks to Sabir Peele of Men's Style Pro, who sent us an especially awesome list of stores. Follow him on Instagram here.

Suits, under $650

Why you need them: For obvious reasons, you need a suit, and the truth is, it should be made to measure. Our good friend, The Fine Young Gentleman, wrote an excellent post for us about how you can get a made-to-measure suit without spending a trillion dollars. Read it. Then read it again.

Also, remember, you can't go wrong with gray, navy, and black.

Where to get them: FYG recommends brands like Indochino, Black Lapel, Knot Standard, and My Suit.

Follow FYG on Twitter here.

Dress shirts, $60 to $85

Why you need them: This goes without saying: You need something to wear to the office, and you may not want to spend $200 on something from say, Thomas Pink.

Where to get them: For a perfect fit we highly recommend our friends at Hugh and Crye, based in DC. Also SuitSupply.com and Lands' End Canvas have good stuff ranging from $56 to $80.

Casual shirts, $45 to $85

Why you need them: Dude, you can't wear a T-shirt everywhere.

Where to get them: This item's not too hard to find, but we especially love Frank and Oak for this. Everything's under $50, and they have a great selection, but you have to sign up and be member (which is free). There's also NewLook.com (out of the UK), which has a huge variety of styles, fabrics, and brands at low prices.

Here's How Much Italy Spends On Counterfeit Goods

Italy fake goods

The Italian economy might be in deep trouble, but the country is still spending a lot on counterfeit goods.

Italians spent €6.5 billion ($8.2 billion) on counterfeit products in 2012, according to a report by Italy's census bureau, CENSIS, released on Thursday.

That's actually lower than the previous figure from 2008, when the Italian economy lost €7.7 billion ($9.7 billion) to the black market. People are spending less money due to Italy's economic slowdown over the last few years. Italian black market - decline But the Italians haven't completely stopped purchasing knockoff items. The country's counterfeit spending habits are detailed in the chart below. At €2.25 billion (nearly $3 billion), fake clothes and accessories account for roughly one-third of the total amount spent on counterfeit goods. Music and videos come in second, with food and drink placing third.

Italian black market - pie

If all these fake products were sold through legal channels, rather than on the black market, the Italian economy would instantly grow by €17.7 billion ($22.3 billion), according to the report. It would also mean 105,000 extra jobs.

The counterfeit market is massive in Italy: Three out of five Italians are "aware that there are illegal businesses in their neighborhood," the report said. It's even worse in the south of the country where nearly 80% know that counterfeit products are being sold in their area.

What are the hot spots to buy and sell counterfeit goods? Eight out of 10 Italians said that they usually buy these knockoff goods, like bags and scarves, on the street. That's followed street markets, the beach, department stores, online, and door-to-door sales.

The Most Famous Movie Set In Every State

Everyone has that one movie that reminds them of home.

We set out to name the most famous movie in every state — a challenging and subjective endeavor. Some states were more obvious than others. While there's no place like Kansas, New York has inspired directors ranging from Martin Scorsese to Woody Allen to Rob Reiner.

To pick the most famous, we evaluated the state's prominence in the movie and leaned toward movies that were filmed in that location as well. The movie's lifetime gross, its critical acclaim, and testimonials by our geographically diverse staff also influenced our decision.

Two bloggers — Jason Kottke, the creator of the Silkscreen typeface, and Meg Hourihan, who launched Blogger and cofounded Kinja with Gawker's Nick Denton — have listed their West Village townhouse for $5 million, according to Curbed NY.

Kottke and Hourihan, both web designers and blogging pioneers, met online through their personal websites and were married in 2006.

They then bought the renovated four-bedroom townhouse, which used to be a home for 19th-century Lutheran priests, for $2.89 million in 2007.

Highlights include marble fireplaces, a clawfoot tub, and a large backyard.

The townhouse is located in the West Village in a building that was a rectory for a nearby church in the 19th century.

Once you enter, you'll find a quaint living room with a marble fireplace.

The living room leads into the kitchen, which is pretty large, especially by New York standards.

A Sommelier Chooses His 10 Favorite Wines For $16 Or Less

0

sommelier presents wines

Recently, we wrote about an experiment showing that most people can't taste the difference between cheap and expensive wine, and it got us thinking: What are the best inexpensive wines?

So we asked an expert: Sommelier Jörn Kleinhans, the owner of the Wine Elite Sommelier Company.

"We've found that appreciation of wine usually comes with deeper knowledge, which you can gain when a specific wine is a good representation of its grape varietal," Kleinhans says. He explains that such a wine must marry varietal (that's categories like Cabernets, Pinot Noirs, and Rieslings) with a region in which it grows best.

"The wines here are typical examples of their kind," he says. "If you buy one, that's great, and if you buy all of them, you basically have a box of all the important wine styles in the world."

Here, Kleinhans presents his top 10 wine picks for $16 and under, broken down by varietal and region. While they may be available in your local wine store, we've also provided links to where you can purchase them online.

1. Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand

Such as: 2013 Giesen Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough, $10.99

"This is perhaps the most drastic example of Sauvignon Blanc because it shows strong grapefruit, lemon, and grass notes, which is the clearest taste profile of this wine," says Kleinhans.

2. Riesling from Germany

Such as: 2009 S. A. Prum "Urziger Wurzgarten" Riesling Kabinett, $12.99

"Germany is where Riesling should belong," explains Kleinhans. "This wine has a sweetness, high aroma, and high acidity that you look for in every Riesling."

3. Chardonnay from Burgundy, France

Such as: 2011 Château de la Charrière Bourgogne Chardonnay Domaine Yves Girardin, $14.99

"This is the ultimate expression of a Burgundy," says Kleinhans. "It's clean, mineralic, and made to be consumed with food."

Why You Laugh When You Get Tickled

The 15 Best Pumpkin Beers In The US

0
0

Pumpkin beers assorted

When the weather cools down and people start breaking out sweaters and scarves, breweries start breaking out the pumpkin beers.

So after sampling a number of seasonal releases — and with a little help from craft beer authority RateBeer.com— we came up with the 15 best pumpkin beers you won't want to miss out on this fall.

15. SHOCK TOP – Pumpkin Wheat (5.2% ABV)

Say what you will about Shock Top, but the company known for its Raspberry Wheat and Lemon Shandy beers actually makes a decent pumpkin beer. The Pumpkin Wheat is slightly acidic in a way that's reminiscent of orange juice, yet malty with a mild pumpkin flavor.

14. HEARTLAND – Imperial Smiling Pumpkin Ale (8% ABV)

Heartland Brewery partnered with Brooklyn's Greenpoint Beerworks and KelSo Beer to concoct this dark amber-colored imperial pumpkin ale. It's well-spiced and only slightly bready, a bigger and better version of the standard 5.5% ABV Smiling Pumpkin Ale.

Harpoon Brewery, UFO Pumpkin, beer, pumpkin beer

13. HARPOON – UFO Pumpkin (5.9% ABV)

Strong aromas of cinnamon and spice are the first thing you'll notice about this beer, a seasonal addition to Harpoon's UFO (UnFiltered Offering) series. Pumpkin beers are notorious for being bready and heavy in body, but Harpoon's UFO Pumpkin is surprisingly light and clean for a pumpkin beer. It's perfect for one of those warmer fall days.

12. CONEY ISLAND – Freaktoberfest (6.6% ABV)

Freaktoberfest is a roasty, dark orange pumpkin beer brewed with espresso beans. Sounds like an odd combo, but if you drink pumpkin spice lattes, this makes sense. Freaktoberfest received poor marks on RateBeer, but I personally liked this unusual beer and was surprised, with such strong flavors preset, how easy and enjoyable this was to drink.

11. SCHLAFLY – Pumpkin Ale (8% ABV)

This Saint Louis brewery makes its pumpkin beer with both pumpkin and butternut squash, creating an amber-colored beer that screams fall. Schlafly's Pumpkin Ale is nicely spiced, with nutmeg front and center.

Southern Tier, Pumking, Pumpkin Beer, Beer

10. SOUTHERN TIER – Pumking (8.6% ABV)

Perhaps one of the best-known and most sought-after pumpkin beers on the market, Pumking pours clear orange. The beer itself, just like the bottle label, is a little bit different every year. This year's batch is maltier but lighter on spices than last year's version, which I enjoyed more, and most agree that the 2011 was still the 'king's best year.

9. CIGAR CITY – Good Gourd Imperial Pumpkin Ale (8.5% ABV)

Good Gourd is like pumpkin pie à la mode in liquid form. This imperial pumpkin ale from Tampa's Cigar City Brewing incorporates Ceylon cinnamon, Zanzibar cloves, allspice, and nutmeg to make a spicy and exotic pumpkin beer.

8. AVERY – Rumpkin (16.7% ABV)

Each September, Avery Brewing Co. in Boulder, Colorado, releases Rumpkin, a mega imperial pumpkin ale aged for four months in rum barrels. Rumpkin usually ranges in ABV from 15-18%; this year it finished at a whopping 16.7%. Richly spiced and boozy, it's a good idea to share this one.

Elysian pumpkin beers

7. ELYSIAN – Night Owl Pumpkin Ale (5.9% ABV)

Night Owl is a light-bodied, generously spiced, but easy-to-drink beer brewed with with nutmeg, clove, cinnamon, ginger, and allspice. Elysian Brewing also makes a number of other pumpkin beers, including their Dark O' The Moon Pumpkin Stout and The Great Pumpkin Imperial Pumpkin Ale.

6. ITHACA – Country Pumpkin (6.3% ABV)

This hazy orange pumpkin beer from upstate New York is malty and nostalgic of fall. It's light with a dry finish, and doesn't punch you in the face with too much pumpkin.

5. MIDNIGHT SUN – T.R.E.A.T. Imperial Chocolate Pumpkin Porter (7.8% ABV)

Just the name, T.R.E.A.T., says it all with this beer. The dark warmth that porters are known for blends perfectly with the breadiness of pumpkin and roasted cocoa nibs. Made by Anchorage's Midnight Sun Brewing Co., the oak-aged version of this beer back in 2007 is still rated the best ever pumpkin beer by RateBeer.

4/3. ALMANAC – Dark Pumpkin Sour (7% ABV), and Heirloom Pumpkin Barleywine (12% ABV)

This San Francisco brewery hit the ground running in New York last month, finally making its beers widely available to the Big Apple, including two exceptional pumpkin beers. The Dark Pumpkin Sour, a dark pumpkin beer soured in red wine barrels, is complex and appeals to multiple palates. The Heirloom Pumpkin Barleywine is a soul-warming, wine-strength beer aged half in rye barrels and half in brandy barrels that draws out the sweetness of heirloom pumpkins.

Dogfish Head Punkin Beer

2. DOGFISH HEAD – Punkin Ale (7% ABV)

Named for the annual Punkin' Chunkin Festival in Lewes, Delaware, Dogfish Head's Punkin Ale is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. The smooth, brown ale is lightly carbonated and slightly sweet, with notes of cinnamon and brown sugar that don't overwhelm.

1. STEVENS POINT – Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale (7.5% ABV)

Low in bitterness but high in flavor, Stevens Point Brewery's pumpkin ale is medium-bodied and brings a subtle, apple-like tartness to the beer. The balance and complexity of the Wisconsin brewery's Whole Hog Pumpkin Ale makes it the clear winner this year.

Those Terrible Bag Fees Are Keeping The Airline Industry Afloat

0
0

airport laguardia bags vacation baby couple

The global airline industry should see record-breaking profits in 2014, and the key sources of revenue are the myriad fees that annoy passengers so much.

Called ancillary fees, they're what you pay when you want to check a bag, have extra legroom, or change a reservation.

They may seem minor and annoying, but they are an absolute gold mine for airlines.

In 2010, airlines around the world made $22.6 billion in ancillary revenue, worth 4.2% of industry revenue, according to an October 2013 report by IdeaWorks. In 2013, that number will reach $42.6 billion, worth 6% of total revenue.

About half of that comes from commissions for hotel bookings and sale of frequent flier miles. The rest is from "a la carte fees," like the $100 fee Spirit and Frontier charge some passengers for the right to have a carry-on bag.

That extra money is keeping the entire industry in the black.

According to a forecast by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), fuel efficiency, consolidation, and robust passenger demand all play a role in pushing profits up, but ancillaries are especially crucial:

Ancillary revenues are a key driver of improved financial performance. Worldwide ancillary revenues have risen to an estimated $13/passenger. Airlines are underpinning their profitability with innovative products and services.

On a per passenger basis, ancillary revenues are greater than the $5.94/passenger profit that airlines are expected to earn in 2014. Without ancillaries, the industry would be making a loss from its core seat and cargo products.

This IATA chart tells the whole story. Over the past few years, revenue from fares has flatlined, while ancillaries are steadily bringing in more and more money:

According to IdeaWorks, KLM makes €65 million ($89.4 million) annually by charging extra for economy comfort seating. Southwest raked in $161 million with EarlyBird boarding charges in 2012.

So travelers should get used to fees like these, and be prepared for more: They're too effective to disappear anytime soon.

This Chart Shows The Incredible Explosion Of Crayon Colors Over The Last 100 Years

crayola crayon chronology

First invented in 1903, the original Crayola box contained only eight colors, including red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, brown, and black. It sold for only a nickel.

chart posted on Reddit shows how Crayola crayon colors have grown from eight basic hues to dozens in a little over 100 years.

Now, there are 120 colors in the Crayola color wheel. The names have evolved as well to include colors like “denim,” “screamin’ green,” “dandelion,” and “razzle dazzle rose.”

Stephen Von Worley, a visualization researcher at Data Pointed, created the visual crayon chronology with his pseudonymous friend who he calls "Velociraptor." They used Wikipedia’s list of Crayola colors and added the standard 16-count crayon box released in 1935 for schools to create the beautiful graphic.

The pair also figured out that the average growth rate of crayon colors was 2.56% annually, meaning that the number of colors doubles every 28 years.

So by 2050, our future children could be coloring with 330 different colored crayons.

You can see an interactive version of the so-called “Crayon-Bow” at Von Worley’s Data Pointed website that allows you to scroll over to see the crayon names.

A London-Based Architect Has Designed This Crazy Rug That Magically Transforms Into A Couch

stumble upon sofaAlessandro Isola, a 39-year-old Italian architect, has invented a rug that can turn into a couch.

He calls it the ’Stumble Upon Sofa,’ a nod to his being inspired after continuously tripping over his own carpet.

stumble upon sofa“Ordinarily a 'ridge' in a carpet would immediately be pulled straight or be stood on to regain its flat purpose,” the London-based designer explained on his project’s website. “But not in this case.”

Instead, the rug is designed to be its own seating structure with supportive curves and ridges molded with a carbon fiber core. Padding was also added to make the sofa more comfortable, and there are built-in shelves that can hold books and display knick-knacks beneath the folds.

stumble upon sofaThe dimensions can be custom-made to fit the home owner’s needs and will remain static once installed in the home. Isola's studio told Business Insider that they are currently in contact with makers in Italy to see how much it would cost to make the concept design into a reality.

stumble upon sofaThis is not the first design of its kind that Isola has created. He previously revealed the 'Stumble Upon' coffee table that is a combination of a rug and highly-polished side table.

Isola Alessandro is having a prototype of the table constructed, and will be selling it for €6,900 or $8,600 (not including tax and transportation), the team at Alessandro Isola's studio told Business Insider.

Stumble Upon coffee tableThere is no price for the 'Stumble Upon Sofa' as of yet, but you can be sure quite a few eccentric millionaires will want this statement-making piece in their homes.
