Project Jewel

Singapore's Changi Airport is already considered to be the world's best airport. Soon, it will be even better thanks to a "lifestyle destination" addition to connect all three terminals.

Nicknamed Project Jewel, the addition will be a dome-shaped space that will house airport operations, indoor gardens, retail stores, and and hotel facilities. Project JewelDesigned by the architect of Singapore's iconic Marina Bay Sands hotel complex, Moshe Safdie, Project Jewel will be built of glass and steel and shaped like a donut. It will be approximately 1.4 million square feet with five stories.Project JewelProject Jewel will connect the all three of Changi's terminals via all-glass walkways, and will include green walls to offset the emissions from the planes overhead.

It is set to cost $1.47 billion and will be completed in 2018, according to AsiaOne.Project Jewel"We are very excited about this opportunity to create at Changi Airport an iconic global attraction that will capture the hearts of both tourists and Singaporeans," said Lee Seow Hiang, CAG’s Chief Executive Officer.

Project Jewel should be complete in 2018.

Get Ready To See Classic Art Everywhere Around America

Art Everywhere US

Starting Monday, passersby around the country will stumble across classic pieces of art on their daily commute.

A project called Art Everywhere is coming to the US after launching in the UK last year. The project is replacing standard outdoor advertisements with famous paintings through Aug. 31 to spark enthusiasm and conversation around the arts. The hope is also that the project will prompt more museum visits.

There will be 58 pieces of American art displayed in all 50 states on about 50,000 different displays, including billboards, bus shelters, subway platforms, and airports. With the help of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America, the paintings are going beyond the museum's walls and will be available to the general public. You can locate the different displays on Art Everywhere's interactive map.

Leading up to the launch, thousands of people voted on their favorite American classics, and the winners — along with a couple add-ons from the creators of the project — make up the 58 paintings, which draw from five different museums across the country.

But instead of just plastering pictures around the country, Art Everywhere is integrating social media and technology to create more of a buzz.

Passersby are encouraged to share their thoughts on social media and take selfies in front of the painting using the hashtag #ArtEverywhereUS, according to Maxwell Anderson, the Eugene McDermott Director of the Dallas Museum of Art and one of five museum directors participating in Art Everywhere. The top ten most creative photos will win a prints of one of the project's artworks.

Art Everywhere US

On top of that, 39 of the 58 paintings can be scanned with the app Blippar to add an augmented reality feature that makes the paintings look like they're floating. It also gives users more information about the artwork, and some works even offer audio guides. Users can also take a selfie through the Blippar app to enter the social media competition.

Art Everywhere US

The idea for Art Everywhere all came from Richard Reed when he happened to walk down a street in the UK and notice a random piece of art.

Art Everywhere US

"It gave me a lift and brightened up that ugly street," Reed said at the Times Square press conference for Art Everywhere's US launch.

"There are frames on every building wall," he said. "They currently show advertising, but posters don't have to just convey consumer messaging. I thought maybe we can use it to show the country's art. It's an opportunity to flood our streets with art, create moments of beauty and reflection amongst our trips to the shops."

Here's Some Of The Great Food You Can Order From Caviar, The Delivery Startup Just Bought By Square

0
0

Foodies who can afford a $9.99 fee can finally order from chic restaurants that typically don't offer other delivery options. The service is called Caviar, and you can think of it as the GrubHub for rich people.

The online ordering startup launched last year in San Francisco and is now active in New York City, Boston, Seattle, Chicago, and Washington, D.C., with plans to expand to other cities soon.

And now, after weeks of speculation, Caviar has confirmed it has been acquired by Square, the mobile payments company run by Jack Dorsey. Though the exact purchase price hasn't been reported, the New York Times previously speculated that the deal could be worth as much as $90 million.

"Together we’ll double down our mission of delivering premium food through a premium delivery service with no compromises — giving buyers easy access to the food and restaurants they love so much," Caviar said in a blog post announcing the deal.

Caviar's appeal is that it allows customers to order from popular restaurants that don't usually deliver, like Ike's Place in San Francisco and Momofuku in New York.

"We look for the best restaurants in the city that have great food," partner John Keh told Business Insider. "Our restaurant partners do not have to be the fanciest in town, but if they make some of the best dishes in their category, we partner with them."

Once Caviar partners with a restaurant, it send a professional photographer to capture mouthwatering images for the online menu.

"A picture of the food lets you quickly determine if the dish is appealing to you," Keh said. "As the saying goes, we eat with our eyes."

Prices on Caviar, which are set by restaurants, can be slightly higher than prices in the restaurant, as noted by Eater. Users also pay a 18% gratuity charge and the $9.99 delivery fee.

Keh learned about logistics and operations firsthand while serving as a geospatial analyst for the U.S. Air Force.

"That directly tied into my work now at Caviar, of looking at maps and routes, trying to make everything as efficient as possible," he said.

Caviar gave Business Insider an exclusive list of the ten most popular New York restaurants on its site, along with the most popular dish from each.

10. L'Apicio: Pork Chopl'apicio pork chop

L'Apicio is a trendy East Village Italian restaurant that's been popular with critics since it opened in 2012. Although known for its polenta and award-winning meatballs, L'Apicio also makes a popular $30 pork chop, served with apples and roasted turnips, which Caviar users love.

9. DBGB Kitchen and Bar: The Frenchie Burgerdbgb kitchen and barThis gastropub by famed French chef Daniel Boulud offers diners a wide selection of house-made sausages and burgers, among other bistro fare. The $17 Frenchie — a burger topped with confit pork belly, arugula, tomato-onion compote, morbier cheese, peppered brioche bun, cornichon, and mustard — is a favorite with Caviar users.

8. Taim: Green Falafel Sandwichtaim green falafelTaim, which has locations in the West Village and Nolita, serves some of the best falafel in the city. Taim's most popular item on Caviar is the green falafel sandwich, a cheap option at just $6. It's served with pita on the side.

7. Motorino: Cherry Stone Clam Pizzemotorino cherry stone clam pizzeIn 2010, New York Times restaurant critic Sam Sifton declared Motorino the best pizza in New York City. Caviar users love Motorino, too, especially the $17 cherry stone clam pizza.

6. Blue Ribbon Sushi: Omakase Sushiblue ribbon sushiBlue Ribbon's sushi outpost is a favorite on Caviar, as is its omakase sushi. The fish selection depends on the daily catch, and at $85, it's a pretty steep choice for lunch.

5. Katz's Deli: Katz's Pastramikatz's deli pastramiKatz's Deli has been a Lower East Side classic for decades, and Caviar users can't get enough of its famous pastrami. You can order the sandwich for $18.45 with Caviar.

Consumer Reports: 11 Ways To Get The Best Deals On Rental Cars

0
0

Rental Car Companies At Seattle-Tacoma International Airport

As arduous as air travel might be, getting around town after landing can be even worse. Many travelers turn to public transit, others hop in cabs, but most rely on a good old-fashioned rental cars. In fact, the car rental business become a $25 billion industry in 2013

Unfortunately, there's a bewildering array of rental companies, locations, cars, and optional features that can affect the price of a rental. As a result, the actual cost of a rental can end up much higher than advertised.

In response, some travelers have turned to the simplified user experience of car sharing programs, such as Zipcar. However, unless you're renting for less than day, car sharing programs are far more expensive than major car rental agencies, Consumer Reports Senior Editor Jeff Blyskal told Business Insider.

Luckily, there are some valuable tips that can help you snare the best deal the next time you are in the market for a rental car (via Consumer Reports).

Shop around online

Like airplane tickets or hotel rooms, it helps to do some shopping at the various online travel agencies. Websites like Kayak, Hotwire, or Priceline offer a variety of prices and deals that can save you a bundle. According to Consumer Reports, online quotes for a four-day rental of a Toyota Corolla at O'Hare Airport in Chicago varied by as much as $60 per day.

Avoid renting at the airport

Renting from the counter at the airport can be a great convenience, but it's a convenience that can cost you. According to Consumer Reports, renting from an airport location often includes tacked-on fees and taxes aimed at tourists by local governments seeking to raise funds. As a result, significant savings can be had by taking public transportation and renting from an urban or suburban location.

The publication noted that Enterprise quoted a four-day Corolla rental from O'Hare for $386, while the same car can be had for just $157 at an in-town Enterprise location.

Don't book at the counter

When possible, it's best to have reservation. Booking at the counter could end up costing you more money to get the car you want. It could also put you at risk of getting stuck with a more expensive model. This is especially the case on Mondays, when business travelers flock to a city.

Reserve a smaller car

Hertz Rental Car LotAnother way to get a good deal is to book a smaller or more affordable car ahead of time. Sometimes, the model or vehicle type you booked isn't available, so the rental agency will upgrade you to a more expensive car for free.

Rent for longer periods

Renting by the week or even longer can result in cheaper per-day costs. For example, a two-day rental of a Hyundai Accent from Avis at Newark Liberty Airport was quoted at $106 per day. However, a nine-day rental went for just $41 per day. This is because rentals that last a week or more have the benefit of a lower weekly rate instead of a daily rate.

Timing Matters

The cheapest fares at the rental counter tend to be in the form of weekend rates. Consumer Reports also recommends that you avoid changing reservation details mid-trip. In fact, returning your rental car a couple of days early can result in your weekly rate being changed to a daily rate. Returning the car and hour late can lead you to being charged for an extra day. Return at a different location than the one your rented, and you'll be in for a hefty relocation charge.

Use alternative rental insurance

Instead of opting for the rental company's insurance, use your own insurance — but only after making sure your insurance has collision coverage that includes rentals.

In addition, American Express and certain Visa and MasterCard holders can get rental-car insurance as membership perk.

Take a look at smaller rental companies

Rental Car Counter Atlanta Airport ThanksgivingWhile the prices and service at the agencies like Enterprise, Avis, and Hertz don't vary a great deal, it may be worthwhile to explore small local rental companies. But smaller companies tend to have fewer locations located further away from the airport and have fewer vehicles,  Blyskal warned.

Avoid optional extras

Rental car companies will offer customers a variety of optional extras, like a navigation system or a baby seat. For what they charge, it is usually much cheaper to simply buy your own baby seat or simply use Google Maps on your smartphone (safely, of course).

Fill up your own gas

One scheme to watch out for are the "full-tank" deals that rental companies offer, Blyskal said. These seem like a good deal to consumers because they no longer have to shop for their own gas and can return the cars on empty. But Blyskal warns that these offers come with expensive charges for the service. You'll pay for a whole tank even if you return the car half full.

Join a club

Another simple way to get a good deal on a rental car is to join an automotive club, like AAA or AARP. Auto clubs usually offer special deals on rental cars for their members, along with roadside assistance should anything go wrong. In addition, warehouse stores with membership fees and credit cards may also offer discount deals on rentals.

San Francisco Is The Least Affordable Housing Market For Millennials, But They're Still Moving There In Droves

san francisco bay bridge

San Francisco County has the least affordable housing market for millennials, according to a recent survey by real estate site RealtyTrac.

This shouldn't be too surprising to anyone who's been following the anti-tech gentrification protests that have been increasingly common in San Francisco in recent months. Some argue that as more and more young tech workers have moved into the city, demand has far outpaced supply, and prices have skyrocketed.

Analysts looked at what percentage of income was necessary for an average income earner to purchase a median-priced home or rent an average three-bedroom apartment in 351 U.S. counties. Only counties with a population of at least 100,000 and where millennials made up at least 24% of the population were considered. Additionally, only counties that saw an increase in their millennial population between 2007 and 2013 were considered.

For the purpose of the survey, a millennial was defined as someone born between 1977 and 1992.

Using those data points, RealtyTrac found that someone earning a median income in San Francisco would need to spend more than 78% of their income on a median house payment. Renters, on the other hand, would need to spend 47% of their income for a three-bedroom rental, the fifth-greatest percentage for all U.S. counties.

It's generally recommended to spend about 30% of a household's income on rent and utilities.

Despite the unaffordable prices, more millennials are moving to San Francisco than pretty much anywhere else in the country. According to RealtyTrac, the city's millennial population increased by 68% between 2007 and 2013. The only county with a greater increase was Alexandria, Virginia, a Washington, D.C. suburb that saw an 81% increase.

Alameda County, located across the bay from San Francisco, also ranked high for both renters and buyers.

You can see all of the results in the chart from RealtyTrac below.

4 'Lost' Dr. Seuss Stories From The 1950s Will Be Republished This Fall

Horton and the Kwuggerbug and More Lost Stories

Oh, the places they'll go!

Some forgotten Dr. Seuss stories published in Redbook magazine in the 1950s will re-surface in a new Random House book this September.

The book, titled, "Horton and the Kwuggerbug and More Lost Stories," resurrects four of Seuss's lost tales and compiles them into one book.

Favorite characters like Horton from "Horton Hears A Who" and the Christmas Grinch make an appearance, getting into new adventures in two of the four stories.

"For the most part, those magazines were tossed out when the next month's issue arrived and the stories were largely forgotten," writes Charles D. Cohen, a Seuss scholar, in his introduction calling the stories "fresh encounters with old friends and familiar places."

The other two tales are titled "Marco Comes Late" and "How Officer Pat Saved the Whole Town." The former is about a boy who is late to school, and the latter is about a vigilante police officer.

A review from Publishers Weekly reported that the stories were "by no means gems," but do "suggest how Geisel [Dr. Seuss] tinkered with characters, developed his signature tetrameter, and commented on ethical issues, circa 1950."

You can buy an advanced copy of the book here.

Neverland Ranch train stationMichael Jackson's famed Neverland Ranch will soon hit the market.

The 2,800-acre ranch in Santa Ynez, California, hasn't been occupied since Jackson moved out in 2005. Private investment firm Colony Capital bought it in 2008 for $23.5 million and, after a restoration, plans to seek a buyer in the near future, Bloomberg reports.

Jackson bought the ranch in 1988. It features 22 buildings, including apartments and a movie theater. During his time there, the singer also installed a private railway and fairground (which has since been turned into a "zen garden").

Real estate experts say Neverland could fetch up to $50 million. An AP photographer visited the property in 2009.

Welcome to Neverland Ranch, the famed 2,800-acre property that once belonged to the late Michael Jackson.

Passing through the gates into the driveway, visitors will see a bronze statue of children playing in front of the main house.

The World's Best Business Schools 2014

For our fifth annual list of the World's Best Business Schools, we conducted a survey that asked thousands of real professionals around the world to rank the world's best business schools.

This year, nearly 10,000 readers voted and ranked Harvard the world's best business school.

Survey participants rated the reputation of the graduates from top business schools around the world on a scale of poor to excellent (1 to 5), with the percentage of excellent ratings used as a tiebreaker.

We included responses only from professionals who said they had experience hiring MBAs at least half the time. We also filtered the data to obtain better geographical balance.

Nearly 60% of respondents said they had an MBA or comparable business degree. Respondents work in a variety of fields, including finance (39%), tech (20%), consulting (13%), media and marketing (8%), and more. See the full breakdown below:

Best Business Schools 2014 results

In response to the question, "In your opinion, how important is it to have an MBA in your industry?" 20% of respondents said that an MBA was "extremely important," 31% responded that it was "very important," and 32% said that it was "moderately important." Only 5% of respondents said that an MBA was "not important at all."

When we added the filter of including only responses from people with MBAs, the results were similar, but these respondents seem to stress the value of an MBA even more, with 24% saying that an MBA was "extremely important," 38% saying that it was "very important," and 30% saying that it was moderately important.

Forty-two percent of respondents said a network of contacts was the most valuable asset business school provides, while 36% of respondents said that "skills and knowledge" was the biggest benefit of an MBA. This chart shows how respondents answered this question:

When we filtered the data to include only responses from people with MBAs, the answers to this question changed, with 43% saying that "skills and knowledge" was the biggest benefit of having an MBA and 37% responding to that question with "network of contacts." These 10 Up-And-Coming Neighborhoods Are The Next Big Things In Housing

The housing recovery has been slowing and home price growth is starting to cool. In fact Case-Shiller home prices fell 0.3% month-over-month in June.

But there are pockets of the country where housing is rapidly heating up.

The real estate company Redfin says that the up-and-coming areas are "mostly adjacent to highly sought-after neighborhoods that have become difficult to get into because of high prices and few homes for sale."

Redfin used its own proprietary website data to figure out which neighborhoods are about to get hot. By looking at the neighborhoods at which more and more people are looking on the website, they're able to make a guess about what housing markets are about to get hot.

To rank the top 10, Redfin looked at year-over-year increase in the average numbers of page views and favorites per home, as well as the changes in rank.

Here's Why Colgate University Is The Most Beautiful School In America

Colgate University

I've always known that Colgate University has the most beautiful campus in the world.

Granted, I'm a bit biased because it's my alma mater, but I'm happy to say I'm not alone: The Princeton Review just named Colgate as having the most beautiful college campus in America.

It conducted a survey that asked 130,000 students at 379 top colleges to rate their schools on dozens of topics ranging from the beauty of their campus to the quality of food and dorms, and Colgate, a small liberal arts school in Hamilton, New York, took the top spot in the category of most beautiful campus

These photos help show why.

Colgate is located in Hamilton, New York, about 40 miles from Syracuse.

It is very remote, surrounded by farms, hills, lakes, and wooded areas.

The campus is built on a hill.

Michael Kors is gearing up to launch an expanded clothing line for men.

The handbag maker said Monday that it plans to open its first menswear-only store next year, and sees the potential for up to 500 such stores in the future. Kors currently has 605 locations worldwide.

"We are just now starting to put together a greater emphasis on the men’s business," Michael Kors Chairman and CEO John Idol said on an earnings call Monday. "I believe that we have the potential to be a leading global menswear brand."

Kors has hired Mark Brashear, the former CEO of Hugo Boss, to lead its menswear line. When the company opens its new flagship store in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan in October, an entire floor will be devoted to men's products.

The current offerings in Michael Kors menswear line are sparse. There's a camouflage leather messenger bag, cable-knit sweaters, dip-dyed hoodies, neon yellow vests, floral-print polos, leather jackets and puff coats.

Here's a selection of items and prices from the website:

For a clue into the type of men that Kors is targeting, consider Idol's remarks about the company's new men's fragrance, which is launching in September.

"The scent was created with the men-on-the-go in mind and balances urban sophistication and rugged style," he said. "We are also launching an ad campaign to support this, including a thrilling TV spot reminiscent of an action movie and print ads that exude jet-set glamour."
