SCOTCHPOCALYPSE: How The Upcoming Referendum Could Harm Scotland's Famous Distilleries

scotch

In September, Scottish citizens will vote on independence and whether it should withdraw from Great Britain.

There are all kinds of interesting angles here — politics, debt, currency, oil rights, etc. — but for many people the big question is, what does this mean for Scotch export?

Bank of America is out with a long note titled What if Scotland votes for independence? At the very end, they look at some risks that a yea vote would pose for the industry.

The firm notes several ways that the Scotch industry could be affected.

The most straightforward way is on the currency side:

At present, the large producers typically invoice Scotch whisky in U.S. dollars irrespective of the final destination market. As such the main transactional FX risk faced is the movement in Sterling/US$ which is typically hedged on a 12-month basis. A volatile currency would likely be more difficult and expensive to hedge making pricing and planning decisions harder.

There would also be free-trade issues:

— Loss of protected status for scotch: Scotch whisky enjoys the protection of ‘geographical indication status’ under E.U. law. This protected status could therefore be put at risk leaving the industry exposed to greater overseas competition/private label brands and reversing the progress that industry has made in tackling counterfeit products.

— Loss of tariff free trading opportunities: E.U. membership allows scotch producers to export tariff free across the E.U.'s 28 member states.

Scotch producers might also lose their global support networks:

As a major exporter the scotch industry currently benefits from access to the U.K.'s extensive network of overseas embassies, agencies and trade delegations.

And finally, producers might come under more burdensome pension and tax regulations:

Given the uncertainty over the eventual fiscal position of an independent Scotland, there is the risk that business rates and taxes have to rise to plug the fiscal gap. The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has also voiced a number of concerns over the potential impact on company pension schemes – pension schemes are typically run on a U.K. wide basis. Such schemes may have to apply with onerous E.U. cross border rules, potentially raising costs for business.

So higher costs, higher tariffs, the loss of marketing power, and more volatility for Scotch producers. Seems plausible that availability will go down and prices will go up for consumers.

Meanwhile, here's a chart of the big export markets for Scotch:

Life In Rio Revolves Completely Around The Beach [PHOTOS]

Praia vermelha, rio beach

Daily life plays out at the beaches in Rio de Janeiro: families gather for informal meals, kids play football (soccer), and young people flirt over beer and caipirinhas.

Brazil's capital city is famous for its beaches, from world-famous Ipanema and Copacabana to lesser-known beaches like Prainha and Vermelha.

The beaches are so popular that they become the city's backyard, where Cariocas (people who live in Rio) eat, socialize, and play.

This is world-famous Ipanema beach. It is located in the heart of the city, separated from the urban center by a roadway.

Every Sunday, the roadway closes to cars, while pedestrians, cyclists, and skateboarders take advantage of the open space.

Yet the beach feels like it's a world away, with its white sands and clear water. There are two mountains, called the Dois Irmãos (Two Brothers), at the western end of the beach.

Parents Are Spending $1,000 To Have Professionals Pack Their Kids' Suitcases For Summer Camp

summercampNew York City mothers are paying "professional organizers" up to $1000 to pack their kids' trunks for summer camp, The New York Post reports.

Barbara Reich of Resourceful Consultants charges $250 per hour and sometimes needs up to four hours to sufficiently pack all the camp necessities — including "French-milled soaps" and "scented candles."

“I talked three people off the camp ledge,” Reich told The Post. “For a lot of mothers, particularly when their child is going away for the first time, it’s very stressful. Clients will say, ‘I need to touch and feel the sheets for softness.’ ”

Dayna Brandoff, a professional organizer with Chaos Theory, already expects 15 "sleep away preparation" sessions in June.

“It’s really about bringing the feel of home to camp,” Brandoff said. “A lot of the parents that I work with want to duplicate the bedding that they have at home. They’re sending plastic boxes and shelving to give their kids more space.”

Although one could make an argument that French-milled soaps, scented candles, and the exact duplication of a child's sheet threadcount goes directly against all that summer camp stands for, what's clear here is that these kids are going to have the neatest trunks at camp. That is, until all their clothes wind up wrinkled, covered in mud, and piled under their bunk beds after day one.

Chocolate chip cookies are one of America's favorite sweets.

But crafting the perfect one can be a science, says food blogger Tessa Arias of Handle The Heat

"Have you ever wondered why chocolate chip cookies can be chewy, crisp, soft, flat, thick, cakey, greasy, bland, flavorful, moist, or crumbly?" Arias writes on her blog

To demonstrate her point, Arias made eight batches of cookies, all with slight variations.

She chilled one batch of dough overnight, and adding more baking soda to another batch.

As you can see, the results vary widely.

The 10 Best Used Cars For First-Time Drivers

$

Ford Fusion CC BY Carlmages

For most young people and their parents, buying a first car is a major step.

One great option is to look at used cars, which can often be had for a fraction of the cost of brand-new versions.

We came up with 10 used cars we think are the best for the young car buyer on a budget.

To make our list, we focused on cars that are available on the market right now for under $10,000. We looked for ones that are reliable, fun to drive, comfortable, attractive, economical, practical, and most of all, safe.

For safety, we checked out the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety's (IIHS) rankings and ratings (where applicable) for the cars we selected. Prices are based on current prices on Autotrader.com and reflect the lowest price we thing a decent example may cost.

1976 - 1996 Mercedes-Benz Diesel

Starting price: $1,500 and up

IIHS crash test rating: N/A

Why buy it: Back in the 1980s and early 1990s, Mercedes built some of the most durable and tank-like cars on the road. Its diesel models were the biggest tanks of them all.

These cars were virtually unbreakable and can run for hundreds of thousands of miles without complaint. Other parts of the car may start to break, but in our research we have seen that even a series of the most extensive repairs should not cost more than $1,000.

Though the big diesels may not be the fastest sedans on the road, what kid wouldn't want to cruise around in a Benz?

1997- Present Honda CR-V

Starting price: $2,500 and up

IIHS crash test rating: Marginal (1997-2001), Good (2002-Present)

Why buy it: Since its launch in 1997, the Honda CR-V has been one of the hottest selling mini-SUV's in the world. The CR-V offers an incredible blend of economy, utility and Honda's unbeatable track record for reliability.

Though some may find the CR-V's smallish four-cylinder engine to be a tad underpowered, it is more than acceptable for most daily commutes. Honda has also included a host of fun features like a collapsible center console and an in-car picnic table.

1998-2004 Toyota Tacoma

Starting price: $2,900 and up

IIHS crash test rating: Acceptable

Why buy it: Toyota's Tacoma pickup makes our list as the only representative of the pickup segment. The Tacoma offers rugged off-road capability in addition to Toyota's strong build quality.

The truck's available four -and six-cylinder powerplants offer good performance, but some may find them to be a bid thirsty when it comes to fuel.

The Hunger Games, Catching Fire

Think no one is judging you when you highlight your book passages in “The Hunger Games”? Think again.

Kindle users can highlight their favorite book passages so they can return to them later, and Amazon keeps track of the most highlighted excerpts (Vox did a neat analysis of the ranking today).

It turns out that Kindle users seriously love Katniss Everdeen, the heroine of "The Hunger Games" series. One of her quotes in “Catching Fire,” the second installment of the series, was highlighted by almost 18,000 readers.

To put that in perspective, that’s twice the number of people who highlighted Jane Austen’s famous opening in “Pride and Prejudice."

Below. are the 10 most highlighted book passages of all time (see the full list here). Aside from two “Pride and Prejudice” quotes, the list is dominated with passages from the “Hunger Games” series.

  1. “Because sometimes things happen to people and they’re not equipped to deal with them.”– “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 17,784 Kindle users)

  2. "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”– “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen (highlighted by 9,260 Kindle users)

  3. “The rules of the Hunger Games are simple. In punishment for the uprising, each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and one boy, called tributes, to participate. The twenty-four tributes will be imprisoned in a vast outdoor arena that could hold anything from a burning desert to a frozen wasteland. Over a period of several weeks, the competitors must fight to the death. The last tribute standing wins.” - “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 9,260 Kindle users)

  4. “It takes ten times as long to put yourself back together as it does to fall apart.”“Mockingjay” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 8,833 Kindle users)

  5. “‘I just want to spend every possible minute of the rest of my life with you,’ Peeta replies.”– “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 8,500 Kindle users)

  6. “‘I wish I could freeze this moment, right here, right now, and live in it forever,’ he says.”– “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 8,437 Kindle users)

  7. “Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us."– “Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen (highlighted by 8,437 Kindle users)

  8. “Life in District 12 isn’t really so different from life in the arena. At some point, you have to stop running and turn around and face whoever wants you dead.”– “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 8,223 Kindle users)

  9. “‘Having an eye for beauty isn’t the same thing as a weakness,’ Peeta points out. ‘Except possibly when it comes to you.’”– “Catching Fire” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 7,900 Kindle users)

  10. “I am not pretty. I am not beautiful. I am as radiant as the sun.”– “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins (highlighted by 7,519 Kindle users)

And these are the most highlighted books of all time (see the full list here):

  1. "The Holy Bible, English Standard Version (with Cross-References)" by Crossway Bibles

Two Finance Guys Have Created The Ultimate Solution For Men's Shoes

Evan Fript, Ben Earley Paul Evans shoes

You may not know this boys — and if you don't consider this your lucky day — but everyone is looking at your shoes. Your boss is looking at your shoes, your clients are looking at your shoes, and that girl is without question looking at your shoes.

Unfortunately a lot of men's shoes at a decent price point are uninspiring, heartlessly put together pieces of leather meant singularly for foot protection.

You should want more than that.

There are alternatives to this situation. Here is one. Among certain circles of fashion conscious gentlemen, a company called Paul Evans is absolutely exploding. Founders Ben Earley and Evan Fript planned it that way.

"The ideal shoe is stylish, comfortable and represents incredible value," Fript told Business Insider. "Our direct to consumer model adds the convenience factor. We do free shipping and free returns. Our competitors are missing all four of those ingredients: style, comfort, value and convenience. There are some great brands out there that make beautiful shoes, but not one brand is doing what we are doing at our price point. Period the end."

Think: Warby Parker of shoes.

The brand, which launched last August, is dedicated to ensuring high quality, Italian made product for the discerning eye at a lower price point than your average Ferragamo (Think: $300-$400 versus $550 to $700).

Paul Evans, The Martin

"If [guys] aren't wearing stylish footwear the entire outfit looks ridiculous..." said Fript. "There really isn't an excuse anymore. "

Fript and Earley, both in their late 20s, met while studying at Tulane. After that, they both went into finance. That's when they started noticing, by and large, how tired the average guy's shoe game was (and is).

They knew that if they were going improve the situation for all of us (the guys, their girlfriends, society), they were going to have the make the experience convenient and efficient.

Now Paul Evans is pulling in six figures of revenue, adding new shoe styles, and talking about an expansion into women's shoes. Fript is dedicated to the business full time, while Earley juggles it along with his work on Wall Street — no easy task.

And if all goes well, it's one that Earley can forgo.

"[In five years] We'll be dominating the menswear industry of course," said Fript, adding, "The question is, what does your outfit say about you? What kind of message are you sending? For us, and our customers, that message is power, intelligence and decisiveness."

Get your message straight.

Photos Of The 5-Star Hotel Where The US Team Is Staying During The World Cup

us world cup team hotel 26

The United States men's national team is staying at the Tivoli Sao Pãulo Mofarrej during the World Cup.

The location is not ideal. The team booked its World Cup base in Sao Pãulo before it found out that it'd be playing in Natal, Manaus, and Recife. It now faces 8,900 miles of travel in the group stage alone.

Inconvenience aside, the hotel looks fantastic.

The Daily Mail ran a delightfully tabloid-y article on the digs entitled, "Who cares if they can't win: US soccer team arrives at luxury base ready to enjoy Michelin starred chef's food, calming Thai massages and a pool that appears to be filled with orange Fanta."

That is, obviously, overstated. But the five-star hotel is still one of the best in São Paulo, and the photos look gorgeous.

The lobby.

The hotel was recently renovated to give it a more modern look.

There's a 23rd-floor restaurant that overlooks the city.

10 Things You Didn't Know You Could Do With Your iPhone

This Stylish Wearable Tech Solves An Annoying Problem For Women

$

ringlyThe latest in wearable tech doesn't look much like tech at all.

Ringly is an 18k-gold plated ring that connects with a smartphone to discreetly notify the wearer when she gets a call or text.

The idea is to incorporate tech into women's everyday accessories so that they can enjoy the moment without missing something important  even when they're not wearing pockets or holding a bag.

"It started with me being frustrated from leaving my phone in my purse and missing a bunch of calls and texts," Ringly cofounder Christina Mercando said to Business Insider. "It turns out a lot of other people have a similar problem."

Ringly offers a selection of four different stones set in gold plating, which vibrate and light up when activated.

In a way, it's the anti-Google Glass.

As they were designing Ringly, Mercando and cofounder Logan Munro wanted all of the technology — accelerometer, Bluetooth LE, motor, and LEDs — to be incorporated into the ring as discreetly as possible.

"We were going for something that was simple, classic, something that a lot of women could get behind," she said. "It's so small and discreet that people wouldn't know the technology is there."ringlyEven those who don't care about subtlety could make use of Ringly.

Once you connect the ring to your smartphone through the Ringly app — available for both iOS and Android — you can customize the way you want to be notified. Blinking lights and vibration patterns are adjustable, as well as which apps you want to receive notifications from.

You can even customize notifications for certain people — if you wanted, for example, to only have Ringly light up when your significant other is calling, you could do that.

To charge the ring, all you have to do is drop it back into its box.

Mercando comes from a background in computer interaction and product design. She served as head of product at machine learning startup Hunch, which was acquired by eBay in 2011, when she was introduced to Munro.

"We were both excited about wearables and the future of the space," she said.

ringly

But it turned out that designing Ringly meant they would have to learn about a host of new techniques, including stone-cutting, sourcing, plating, and casting, among others. They've enlisted the help of jewelry designer Annie Van Harlingen to guide them through the process.

"There's jewelry design, mechanical design, industrial design ... lots of stuff to learn about," Mercando said. "But even our engineering team loves learning about jewelry now."

The project has come together rather quickly — Mercando quit her job to focus on Ringly in April of 2013, and by August the team had received $1 million in funding from Mesa+, First Round Capital, PCH, and Andreessen Horowitz. They then spent four months in San Francisco working on the prototype.

Ringly launches today, with each ring costing $145 on preorder. The price will go up to $195 once it ships in the fall.

How Do Microwaves Cook Food?

$

microwave

Microwave ovens cook food incredibly fast, warming up refrigerated leftovers in minutes or less. But how does this great invention work?

Here, we explore the science behind one of the most revolutionary household appliances of the 20th century.

Microwaves Are A Form Of Energy

Microwaves are electromagnetic waves that fly through space at the speed of light. We can't see microwaves, but if you could, you would see the microwave cooking chamber light up with an intense glow.

Microwaves are shorter than radio waves but longer than infrared radiation. The microwave used for cooking is about 12 centimeters from crest to crest, says Louis Bloomfield, a professor of physics at the University of Virginia. At this wavelength, microwaves are readily absorbed by most foods. But the particles in a microwave, known as photons, don't have enough energy to damage molecules and cause cancer like ultraviolet rays or X-rays.

800px BW_EM_spectrum

The Microwave Oven

A component called the magnetron generates microwaves from electricity inside the microwave oven. To power the magnetron, a transformer converts the standard household electricity from a wall socket of 120 volts to about 4,000 volts or higher. The voltage heats a filament at the center of the magnetron, boiling off electrons.

microwaveThe electrons would rush out in straight line toward an anode, or positive terminal, that surrounds the filament, but two ring magnets above and below the anode bend the electrons back toward the filament and they fly around in a circular path.

microwave aMicrowaves are created as the electrons whip past cavities, or openings, in the anode.

microwave b"It's like blowing across the top of a glass bottle," says Bob Schiffmann, president of the International Microwave Power Institute. But instead of producing a sound whistle, oscillating waves are generated at a specific frequency, typically 2.45 gigahertz. The microwaves are transmitted into the cooking compartment by an antenna where they are bounced around eventually penetrating the food.

microwave cThe microwave door contains a metal mesh that reflects the microwaves like a mirror and keeps them from leaking out. The mesh holes are too small for microwaves to escape through but large enough that visible light can, so we can see what's cooking inside.

Most microwaves have a glass turntable that moves the food around like a carousel so that it heats evenly. If the food wasn't being rotated, parts of your meal would get stuck in the microwave's hot and cold spots.

Microwave Diagram_04

How Microwaves Cook Food

When you hit the start button "it usually takes about 2 seconds to heat up a filament inside the magnetron tube," says Schiffmann. The microwaves are then blasted into the food compartment.

The commonly used frequency of microwaves, 2.45 gigahertz, is easily absorbed by water, fat, and sugar. Says Bloomfield: "The waves are at the right frequency to penetrate deep into food and they deliver cooking power primarily to the food's water content. Water-free solids barely absorb microwaves." That's why microwave-safe containers don't get as hot as the food inside them.

Microwaves heat food, like a cup of coffee or a slice of lasagna, by twisting water molecules back and forth. Water molecules are positively charged at one end and negatively charged at the other. A single water molecule looks like Mickey Mouse's head, says Bloomfield. You can think of the negatively charged oxygen atom as Mickey's face and the two smaller positively charged hydrogen atoms as Mickey's ears.

The positively charged end of the water molecule tries to align itself with the microwave's electric field while the negatively charged end points the other way. But because the field reverses 2.5 billion times a second, Mickey's ears and face are being twisted back and forth rapidly.

As the molecules twist back and forth, they rub into each other. This creates friction, which produces heat.

water moleculesA microwave cooks food much faster than a conventional oven because it heats both the inside and outside of the food the same time, says Schiffmann. A conventional oven or frying pan heats the surface of the food first and the heat gradually moves toward the center. Because the air inside the microwave oven is room temperature, foods don't get brown or crispy as they would with other forms of cooking.

Shoppers could easily get lost for hours in the brand new, 57,000-square-foot "lifestyle center," which is located in Manhattan's Herald Square.

The store features a coffee shop, a hair salon, hundreds of vinyl records, and a Sephora-sized makeup shop, as well as fun gadgets like a "lensometer" that can scan a customer's glasses and read their prescription.

We took a trip to the new location to see what it's all about.

The main entrance faces Macy's on the corner of Broadway and 34th Street.

At first glance, the store looks like any other Urban Outfitters, just a lot bigger.

But unlike most Urban Outfitters locations, here you can grab a cup of coffee and a bite to eat without ever having to leave the store.

6 Awesome Designs To Protect Areas Hit By Hurricane Sandy

$

Hurricane Sandy wreaked absolute havoc on the east coast, and now several design teams have come up with plans to protect vulnerable cities from future storms.

U.S Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan just announced the winners of the "Rebuild by Design" competition, which asked designers to develop projects that would protect cities and redevelop storm-affected areas in environmentally healthy ways.

HUD has allocate $920 million to the winning concepts, which focus on New York, New Jersey, and Long Island, though the projects will need a significant amount of additional support to be put into action.

Take a closer look at the designs below.

The design team BIG received the largest amount of funds—$335 million—for their project, titled The Big "U," according to ArchDaily. The Big "U" would Manhattan by shielding it from floods with an 8-mile protective system, while also providing environmental benefits to the community.13562479315_5ab51999e8_b

This project, titled "New Meadowlands," was built by a team from MIT CAU, ZUS, Urbanisten. This project would expand and protect marshland between Jersey City and Newark, and create an infrastructural park that would protect the land from floods while also existing as a place for residents to gather together and enjoy the outdoors.Meadowlands Project

The Interboro Team created this project, titled "Living with the Bay," which targets Nassau County's South Shore. The project aims to add protective structures along the coast; build new marshland to reduce wave action, to improve the ecology, and to host recreational activities; use green infrastructure to reduce pollution in the north-south tributaries; and create a green corridor along Sunrise Highway by using smart streets and other technology.Nassau County Project

Design firm OMA recognized that a comprehensive solution for storm damage was beyond their means, so they created a strategy that will tackle flood risk. Titled "Resist, Delay, Store, Discharge," their project will do just that—it will resist flood waters with coastal defense, delay floods by slowing rainwater runoff, store excess rainwater, and discharge drainage through water pumps and alternative routes.13562546763_12c9ca0a54_bThe "Living Breakwaters" project by SCAPE/Landscape Architecture focuses on protecting Staten Island without building a wall between people and the ocean. The team will do this by putting a necklace of breakwaters in place to protect the land from flooding and erosion, while also protecting communities of sea creatures.13562482595_38c4425061_o

"Hunts Point Lifelines" is a collaboration between the University of Pennsylvania School of Design and OLIN that offers a flood protection plan for Hunts Point in the Bronx, N.Y. The team sees Hunts Point as a strong community, especially because of The Hunts Point Food Market, which is creating more than 25,000 jobs and $3 billion in economic activity. Therefore, "Hunts Point Lifelines" aims to protect this valuable resource with a locally-built levee, green roofs to help store rain, and more.13562852644_9d81835e43_o

A Million-Dollar Vintage Sports Car Was Demolished By A Falling Tree

1968 Toyota 2000GT Model MF10 lwaoFrom 1967 to 1970, just 351 2000GT sports cars left Toyota showrooms around the world.  After an unfortunate meeting with a tree last weekend, there is now one fewer example of the ultra-rare classic left.

According to NHK, the legendary Toyota was destroyed in the western Japanese city of Nanto after a 100-foot-tall beech tree fell on it as it drove by. Fortunately, reports indicate that the car's 28-year-old driver emerged with only cuts and bruises.

As sad as classic car fans may be to see the remnants of the once-majestic Toyota, the 2000GT's insurers might have simply fainted. The car's rarity and desirability have skyrocketed in recent years with an example selling for $1.2 million at auction last year

For most, the 2000GT's rise to notoriety comes by way of an appearance as a Bond car in 1967's "You Only Live Twice." The model driven by 007 is one of two custom convertibles built for the film due to Sean Connery's inability to fit into the diminutive sports car.

For Japan, however, the 1967 Toyota 2000GT means much more. At a time when the island nation was best known for building cheap motor bikes and flimsy economy cars, the arrival of the 2000GT knocked the automotive world back on its heels. The sleek sports car proved to the U.S. and Europe that Toyota and the Japanese auto industry as a whole were capable of producing a stylish, high performance vehicle to match the industry's best.

TOYOTA_2000GT_Bond_vehiclesThough the car's 8.2-second 0-60 time is fairly pedestrian by modern standards, the lightweight 2000GT is still capable of offering a spirited driving experience. Powered by a 2.0 litre 150 horsepower inline-six co-developed by Toyota and Yamaha, the pint-sized 2000GT gave Europe's best a run for its money in its heyday. For that reason alone, we mourn the passing of an automotive great.
