Italy Is Selling Off This Very Creepy 'Haunted' Island In Venice

Poveglia

The Italian government is auctioning off Poveglia Island, formerly home to medieval plague victims and 20th century asylum patients, as part of a continued effort to raise money to cover the country's national debt

Italy is offering a 99-year lease on the island in the Venetian Lagoon for a price that will be determined by online bidders next month, according to The Telegraph, citing a state sale's agent who noted that barracks on the island had previously sold for 3.8 million euro ($5.25 million).

The country reportedly hopes Poveglia's buyer will transform the former mental hospital, which operated between 1922 and 1968, into a luxury hotel.

The small island's other structures include a 17th-century fort, a church, a prison and a bell tower. Legend has it a doctor who routinely performed lobotomies at the asylum threw himself from the tower after having been driven mad by ghosts of the plague victims. Estimates allege tens of thousands of people died and were burned or buried on the island.

The stories and history of Poveglia helped earn it the title of "The Most Haunted Place in the World." The television shows "Ghost Adventures" and "Scariest Places on Earth" also filmed episodes there.

Citizens of Venice are organizing to stop Italy's private sale of Poveglia. They want to keep ownership local and open the island to the public.

Take a look at the island as it stands today:

Dodge Charger new york auto show 2014The New York International Auto Show, the most popular auto show in North America, opens to the public this weekend.

If you're in the area and want to see the future of the auto industry, it's worth making the trek over to the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center before the show closes on April 27.

We were on the scene for the press-preview days to check out what the world's biggest automakers have been working on.

From the gorgeous new Corvette convertible to the latest Rolls-Royce to the future of the iconic Land Rover Discovery, here are the cars you won't want to miss while you're there.

The engine under the hood of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage GT cranks out 430 horsepower, good for a 0 to 60 time of 4.6 seconds. Even better is the unusually low price tag for the British luxury mark: $99,900. And to top it all off, the GT comes with a standard manual transmission.

After a two-decade hiatus, Alfa Romeo has finally returned to the U.S. market, and its ambassador is the lovely 4C sports car. Thanks to lightweight construction and sleek aerodynamics, the 4C should hit a top speed of 160 mph and run from 0 to 60 mph in about 4.5 seconds.

This week is the 50th birthday of the iconic Mustang, and Ford pulled out all the stops to mark the occasion. That included bringing a car to the top of the Empire State Building and a special edition car, complete with retro styling to complement modern performance.

The New York Attorney General Is Going After Airbnb For What It Calls 'Illegal Hotels'

brian chesky

The New York Attorney General's office filed legal paperwork on Friday to compel Airbnb to turn over names of some of its users.

The AG wants to subpoena Airbnb's records to locate people it believes are running "illegal hotels," according to an AG spokesperson.

New York's top attorney believes that some people are using Airbnb to rent rooms as a business, sidestepping licensing requirements and not complying with rules like fire safety regulations, the spokesperson said. The AG is also looking at how hotel tax laws should apply to Airbnb rentals, the court documents said.

The spokesperson says the AG isn't trying to shut down Airbnb entirely in New York, nor stop people from using it to rent out a spare room now and then.

"It is illegal for residents of Class A buildings to rent out their apartments for any period of time less than 30 days unless they are also present in the apartment," the documents say.

In other words, in New York, it is okay to sublet your apartment for a month or more; it's not okay to rent it for a few nights.

One reason the AG is pursuing this is because of an increasing number of complaints by landlords and fellow tenants when Airbnb rentals go awry, according to the documents.

The AG's office is especially interested in finding those Airbnb users who have multiple New York listings on the website, the spokesperson told us. The spokesperson sent us a list of the type of user they want to investigate, those that have 15-140 properties for rent through the website.

Airbnb has filed a motion to quash the subpoena.

On its blog, Airbnb argues that the issue in New York is hotel taxes:

"Earlier this week, we released new data indicating that the Airbnb community will generate $768 million in economic activity in New York and support 6,600 jobs this year. We highlighted a state law that prevents Airbnb from collecting and remitting $21 million in hotel taxes. And we asked leaders to work with us to change the law to permit Airbnb to collect and remit taxes on behalf of our hosts and guests. It isn’t every day that a company offers to help contribute more tax revenue."

Airbnb is fighting legal battles on both coasts. People in San Francisco are getting evicted for using Airbnb and are starting to fight back.

We reached out to Airbnb for further comment and will update when we hear back.

Here's the full court document that spells out the AG's argument:

IT'S RECORD STORE DAY: Here Are 18 Record Stores Every Music Lover Needs To Visit At Least Once

$

shangri la records

Billboard reported this week that vinyl sales were the only format of music experiencing growth — for the first time ever, digital sales declined.

So we wanted to provide a guide for the greatest list of vinyl shops on earth.

You may have seen some of these lists elsewhere. But with a couple of exceptions, there won't be much overlap. Our list is based on a combination of aesthetics and the exclusivity of their holdings. You won't find L.A.'s Amoeba, Chicago's Reckless Minneapolis' Electric Fetus, and Nashville's Grimey's — everyone knows about those. We also excluded ones from Portland and Austin, as we figured their collections of indie rock could be found throughout the world (though please write if you believe we're mistaken).

The other thing: many of the record stores that should have been on this list have gone to the great turntable in the sky...

But perhaps that makes the following survivors all the more notable.

Check it out.

1) Spillers Records, Cardiff, Wales

Spillers lays claim to being the oldest record shop in the world, having operated out of one location or another in Cardiff since 1894, when it sold phonographs, wax phonograph cylinders and shellac phonograph discs.

spillers records

2) Picadilly Records, Manchester, UK

The place that gave the world England's greatest indie bands, from The Smiths to Joy Division and New Order. As Morrissey wrote in his recent autobiography, "It is here that secures the New York Dolls' first LP as the main window of hte shop blazes with thirty Dolls sleeves stapled together in a dramatic traffic-stopping mosaic, 50 million unimpressed shoppers running by with a speed suddenly increased by the sight of Arthur Kane."

picadilly records

3) Wuxtry Records, Athens, Ga.

The shop that launched a thousand indie bands, because it launched America's greatest one: REM. It's here that future guitarist Peter Buck worked after dropping out of Emory, and where he is said to have met singer Michael Stipe (not to mention the band's lawyer).

wuxtry

4) Gramophone Records, Chicago

Some shops gave birth to bands; Gramophone gave birth to an entire genre, Chicago House. The dusty original moved up the block several years ago but remains as vital as ever.

gramophone records

5) Mazeeka Samir Fouad, Cairo

Here's how online music zine The Quietus editor John Doran describes this joint:

"It is packed to the gills with giant reconditioned gramophone players, huge valve radios and other long outdated formats for playing music. The walls are lined with Egyptian film posters and portraits of stars such as Umm Kulthum and Abdul el-Halim Hafez, the Nightingale of the Nile. I buy a (literally) dusty pile of albums by the former and Joost buys some jazz 7"s. I waver dangerously for a second when [the proprietor] offers to sell me one of the many pear-shaped ouds hanging from the ceiling."

Mazeeka Samir Faoud

6)  Forever Young Records, Grand Prairie (near Dallas), Texas

Just look at it: 11,000 square feet of wax and platinum:

forever young

7)  The Thing, Brooklyn

Everything is $2 and there are possibly a million records. If you like your music shopping to double as a test of will, this is your sport.

the thing

8) OHM, Dubai

According to Time Out Dubai, OHM is "the first store in the Middle East and South Asia to carry vinyl." Presumably they mean modern music on vinyl — Beirut has a long, rich history of incredible east-west crossover productions— but the place seems chill.

ohm records

9) Spacehall, Berlin

The coolest record store in the coolest city in the world. Also doubles as a performance space.

10) Tower Records, Tokyo

The last one left on Earth

11) Louisiana Music Factory, New Orleans

Home to the greatest collection of New Orleans jazz, cajun, zydeco and big band music in the world.

12) Shangri-La, Memphis

Generally regarded as the greatest collection of Memphis blues discs in the city.

13) Jazzhole, Lagos, Nigeria

Serving all your Afrobeat and Fela Kuti needs. Also has frequent live in-store performances.

14)  Submerge, Detroit

Home of the Underground Resistance, the politically active wing of Detroit's techno scene. Also home of the greatest collection of Detroit techno and electronic records in the world.

15)  Rotate This, Toronto

This tiny shop helped fuel the careers of Canada's greatest indie bands including Broken Social Scene and F*** Up.

16)  Big Oomp, Atlanta

If you like your hip hop extra dirty, this is where you want to go.

17) Ernest Tubbs, Nashville

Again, everyone will tell you to go to Grimey's. Where you should really go is Tubbs', the real home of country.

earnest tubbs

18)   12 Tónar, Rejkavik, Iceland

All of the best classical recordings in the world appear to have been packed up and moved here, to this tiny house at the top of the world. According to classical authority Gramophone, this has probably made it the great classical outlet on the planet.

Why Humans Evolved To Like Alcohol

DrinkingBI Answers: How did people evolve to drink alcohol?

There are endless arguments for why people drink, the simplest being that alcohol is tasty and it makes us feel good.

But those reasons do not address the ultimate explanation for why our brains evolved to like alcohol in the first place, at least according to Robert Dudley, a professor of biology at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of "The Drunken Monkey."

Dudley's drunken monkey hypothesis is the first attempt to place alcoholism in an evolutionary context. In a 2004 paper, he argued that modern patterns of alcohol consumption and abuse have a biological basis that can be traced to our fruit-eating primate ancestors.

Hard-Wired For Booze

Sugars in fruits, grains, and nectar are naturally turned to ethanol by yeasts during a process known as fermentation.

The earliest archaeological evidence suggests, based on chemical residues from pottery jars, that humans did not start fermenting honey, rice, and fruit to produce alcoholic beverages until 9,000 years ago.

But these fermented beverages were probably not our first exposure to alcohol, according to Dudley. Our preexisting taste for booze likely developed tens of millions of years ago in our primate ancestors, who survived mostly on fruits.

As fruit ripens, more alcohol is created by the yeasts. When a fruit starts to seriously rot, it can contain up to 8% ethanol, although most ripe fruit contains less than 1%.

Dudley's theory suggests that the alcohol concentration of ripe fruit would have served a purpose for both the fruit-bearing plant and the primate. In tropical forests, fruit can be hard to track down. However, the scent of alcohol from ripe fruits travels long distances, and may have helped primates to find their next meal.

Being attracted to the scent of ethanol from ripe fruits would have been evolutionarily adaptive, enabling the primates to find fruit easier. It was also helpful to the plants, because the primates helped to disperse the seeds in the fruit.

But the gains of eating these alcoholic fruits doesn't end there. Once digested, the theory goes, the alcohol would have stimulated feeding, encouraging the primates to "gobble up the food before anyone else got to it." Humans know this feeling today as the aperitif effect, which you may have experienced if you've ever had a cocktail before a meal and found yourself hungry. Or craved cheese fries after a night out.

Modern Problems

Primates probably weren't getting wasted, because fruits house only tiny concentrations of alcohol compared to today's drinks. In one study, Dudley found that the pulp of ripe palm fruits contained ethanol concentrations of 0.9% on average. Most beers have an alcohol strength of 4% and wine usually 14%.

This could explain why a little bit of alcohol can be healthy, he said. The problem today is that humans aren't drinking alcohol in small amounts. Much like the story of sugar — which in ancient times was limited — alcohol is not only plentiful but, thanks to distillation, available in much higher concentrations than found in fruit.

Our bodies have preserved the biological urge to drink from when alcohol sources were few and far between, even though we live in an age where the supply is unlimited.

Here's The 'SUV Coupe' Mercedes-Benz Made To Battle BMW [PHOTOS]

Mercedes-Benz Concept Coupe SUV

In 2008, BMW introduced the X6 and created a new kind of car, the sport utility coupe. An odd blend of high-riding SUV and sporty coupe, the X6 was a hit.

Now Mercedes-Benz is getting in on the action. Today at the Beijing Auto Show, the automaker unveiled the Concept Coupé SUV, a preview of its entry into the segment BMW created and now dominates.

During a preview event at the New York Auto Show, Dr. Andreas Zygan, Mercedes' chief engineer for sport utility vehicles, said the concept is "unlike any we've done before."

The concept is definitely headed for production, Mercedes says, and will sit a level below the 2015 GLA compact SUV. The automaker promises top of the line driving dynamics to make the funky looking car "curve hungry," and says it combines the "best of both worlds."

Asked during the preview if the Concept Coupé SUV is a copy of the BMW X6, global communications chief Christoph Horn simply said, "customers love more choices."

Here's a closer look at the new Benz:
