The New York Public Library Has A Brilliant New Mapping Tool That History Fans Will Love

$

The New York Public Library has uploaded thousands of maps onto its website.

That's not the cool part, since many of these maps are already available online in some form or another, if you know what to look for.

The cool part is that the NYPL's website has overlaid these maps on their present locations, so you can see how past residents viewed their homes.

Here's what you do: Go to maps.nypl.org/warper and choose "Browse Rectified Maps."

nypl browse

Start searching areas you want to explore to see if there are any historical maps. We'll choose Chicago. We got one result showing Illinois circa 1860. That's OK; we can zoom in.

nypl map

Click "Preview Rectified Map."

nypl maps

And we're here. You'll now want to start zeroing in on Chicago.

nypl maps

Welcome to Chicago, 150 years in the past.

nypl

The coolest element is the transparency bar. It lets you see the overlay of the old map with the new:

nypl maps

This allowed me to learn a ton of things I never knew about Chicago, including:

  • Wilmette, where Rahm Emanuel grew up, was settled by German farmers as Gross Point.
  • Part of River Forest — home of Paul Harvey and the creators of Mars bars — used to be called Harlem, because the guy who bought the land there had grown up in upper Manhattan.
  • There used to be a community north of the city called Angola, for reasons that are not clear.

Anyway, you can also see one for New York City, which shows how much lower Manhattan has expanded into its surrounding bay.

A Chinese travel company brought bags of air from China's Laojun Mountain to Zhengzhou in China’s Henan province, reports Te-Ping Chen at The Wall Street Journal.

Zenghzou, like many major Chinese cities has struggled with a smog problem. On Monday Zhengzhou's air quality index (AQI) was at 158. This compares to a reading of 45 in Bakersfield California, which is the most polluted city in the U.S., The WSJ reports.

Of course this isn't the first time that we've heard such reports out of China.

Chinese officials and businesses have been trying to come up with a multitude of ways to tackle China's smog problem.

Officials have introduced curbs on car purchases and use in certain cities. Aviation Industry Corporation of China was testing a parafoil smog-clearing drone. A multimillionaire handed out free canned air, according to NPR.

The event was intended to promote fresh mountain air from Laojun Mountain, a tourist resort.

The air was reportedly brought from 118 miles away.

$

old palo alto home

Tech money has contributed to a rather bloated real estate market in Silicon Valley.

Homes in this in-demand market often sell for more than $1,000 per square foot. It's not uncommon for 1,000- or 2,000-square-foot homes that would be tear-downs anywhere else to sell for more than $1 million here.

Our friends at real estate listings site Point2Homes helped us compile a list of Silicon Valley homes that are listed for startlingly high prices.

You may be surprised to see just how little your money will get you.

This single-story home may not look like much, but it will set you back nearly $1.5 million.

Address: 1720 Laurentian Way, Sunnyvale

Price: $1,455,000

The listing describes this 2,433-square-foot Sunnyvale home as a "great business opportunity." There are six bedrooms, four bathrooms, and some interesting '60s-inspired decor.

For $2.1 million, this 3-bedroom home will give you a great location.

Address: 2080 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto

Price: $2,100,000

This lot has "lots of potential," and it's conveniently located within walking distance of the desirable Old Palo Alto neighborhood.

This ranch home dates back to 1961 and has 2,833 square feet of living space.

Address: 632 Leaf Court, Los Altos

Price: $2,495,000

The entryway is modest, but a pool area in the backyard would be great for sunny days.

Wine has enjoyed a renaissance in the U.S. in the last twenty years. Wine consumption varies from state to state, but across America, wine drinking has become more popular over the last two decades.

Vinepair, a blog dedicated to discussing and popularizing wine, made an animated map beautifully illustrating wine's increasing popularity since 1994.

Here's a larger version of the key:

Vinepair map key

change in wine consumption vinepair w...

Vinepair points out in their article showcasing the map that the growth in per capita wine consumption is a widespread phenomenon:

Up here in the Northeast we’ve always been liberal with our wine drinking (and by Northeast we include Florida, our warm weather colony). The same goes for the wine producing states on the West Coast. What we find interesting is that the long, steady increase in American wine consumption isn’t a story of the same-old-people just drinking more wine. Rather it’s more people in more states drinking more wine.

For more, check out Vinepair's discussion of the map.

The Backyard Punk Scene Is Alive And Well In East LA [PHOTOS]

Boatwright_BW214264_D3_R 010Drive down the back streets of East Los Angeles on a Friday night, and you may hear 300 or 400 teenagers shouting, thrashing, and partying to the beat of a fast-kicking bass drum. This is the East Los Angeles backyard punk scene, as raw and do-it-yourself as it was when it first sprouted in the '70s.

Photographer and documentarian Angela Boatwright— who's fascinated with rock and music culture and once spent 4 years following a small-time heavy metal band on and off — recently partnered with Vans to document this vibrant scene for its "Off The Wall" series. Boatwright spent months following teenagers who support a scene that doesn't have the backing of traditional music venues.

She shared some of the photos with us here, and you can check out the rest of her work her website. The entire documentary series on East Los Angeles is available at Vans.

Concerts are held in various places, including apartment complex parking lots, backyards of residential houses, and on abandoned properties.Boatwright_215469_O 041Many families, who have no affiliations with punk, host concerts in their backyards because they can make money from hosting and enjoy supporting the neighborhood kids. Hosts will typically collect $2-$3 for admission per person. Boatwright_EastLA_PUNKS_5 6 13_B 048Shows can attract hundreds of kids from all over Southern California. While most are from East L.A., some come from as far as Orange County or San Diego.Boatwright_215469_S 020Most of the kids in the scene are somewhere between 14 and their early 20s.Boatwright_EastLA_PUNKS_5 6 13_J 011

The scene is primarily made up of Latino teenagers, but Boatwright says that kids of all races are represented. Boatwright_215272_CC_004The scene gives the kids a place to belong. Some of the teenagers have difficult living situations that they are looking to escape. As one teenager told Boatwright, "It's a way to get out of the house, forget about all this, and party."Boatwright_214205_D1_BB 041In Boatwright's "Off The Wall" documentary, one teenager talks about how meaningful the backyard punk scene has become. "Family is like the true meaning of what keeps everyone together. And that's pretty much how our scene is, it's like a big family," she says.Boatwright_215272_Q 044At many of the concerts, there are no set times or set lists, says Javier Cabral, a LA Weekly writer, who was once heavily involved in the scene. While some shows have a promoter, many get put together at a moment's notice. They can fall apart when the bands can't find gas money to get to the gig.Boatwright_214205_D1_U 050Teenagers find out about the shows either through Facebook or mass texts. In order to get the invite, you have to be in the know.Boatwright_214205_D1_M 041Like most music scenes, the East L.A. scene comes with its own history, mythology, and current bands. The new teenagers continue the decades-long tradition by starting new bands or moshing at the shows.Boatwright_215272_V 008The music at the shows spans the numerous different sub-genres of punk rock, from ska (an upbeat, reggae-like punk) to street punk (a faster, more relentless version of hardcore punk). Boatwright_215469_V 009The moshing can get pretty intense, but it's all in good fun. When someone falls, usually a group of people step in to get him or her out of the way. For many, it's a safe outlet for the aggression and anger that the teenagers build up in daily life. Boatwright_215469_Z 013Cabral credits the shows with keeping him out of gang warfare. "If you have long hair or tight pants, you are considered a 'rocker' and usually left alone," writes Cabral.Boatwright_EastLA_PUNKS_5 6 13_D 054Boatwright produced a series of documentary episodes for Vans on the East L.A. scene. Italy is putting hundreds of cars up for auction on eBay as part of a public crackdown on government waste.

More than 150 "auto blu" — the common term for the dark blue sedans — hit the market last week, including models from BMW, Alfa Romeo, and Lancia, according to CNBC.

Based on the eBay page, the effort has been a success. Even though the auction runs until April 16, as of Wednesday morning, only 25 cars are left. It's slim pickings now, but there are a few solid rides still available:

7 Hot Men's Fashion Trends You'll See This Spring

$
0
0

Though it may not feel like it quite yet, it's officially spring — that means it's time to talk about men's spring fashions.

The majority of men's New York Fashion Week collections were preppy and athletic, with lots of printed pants, jackets, and suits.

Check out the top seven trends to watch out for this season.

1. Double-Breasted Blazers

Double Breasted men's fashion New York Fashion Week Spring 2014

(Left: Malan Breton; Center: Billy Reid; Right: Ovaida & Sons)

How To Wear Them: Sparingly. Double-breasted blazers are hard to pull off, and if the cut is too baggy, they can look like a bad '80s vintage find.

"It should be tailored short in the body and fitted well around the waist, so I would only recommend it for those well-versed about style and fit," The Buying Director at online menswear retailer MR PORTER Toby Bateman previously advised us.

2. Patterned Jackets

Printed jackets men's fashion new york fashion week spring/summer 2014

(Left: David Hart; Center: Todd Snyder; Right: Mark McNairy)

How To Wear Them: Expect to see lots of different printed jackets this year, from plaid to floral. Even camo will make a resurgence.

Pair a patterned jacket with solid-colored shorts or pants. If you're style savvy, throw a contrasting print in the mix with a button-down shirt.

3. Printed Pants

Printed Pants men's fashion New York Fashion Week Spring 2014

(Left: Michael Bastien; Center: Ernest Alexander; Right: David Hart)

How To Wear Them: Printed pants have been really popular in women's fashion for the last few years, and now they're inching into the men's market.

Use the same rules as printed jackets and keep things minimal. Also make sure your pants are well-tailored so they don't end up looking like you wore PJs to the office.

4. White Suits

White Suits men's fashion New York Fashion Week Spring 2014

(Left: Son Jung Wan; Center: Billy Reid; Right: Diesel Black Gold)

How To Wear Them: All-white suit combos were popular at a wide range of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week shows, including the edgy Diesel Black Gold, the eccentric Billy Reid, and the preppy Black Sheep by Brooks Brothers collections.

The trick with wearing all white is to make sure textures contrast to keep it from becoming tacky: a white cotton shirt looks good with a linen suit, a white t-shirt balances out a silk jacket, etc.

5. High-Rise or Rolled Pants

High-rise pants men's fashion New York Fashion Week Spring 2014

(Left: Nautica; Center: DKNY; Right: Michael Bastien)

How To Wear Them: Choose a pair of pants that fit you well, put on some awesome sneakers or boat shoes, and just go for it.

Of course, this style works better with casual pants like chinos and jeans than with suit attire, so keep that in mind.

6. Color-Blocked Shirts

Color blocking men's fashion New York Fashion Week Spring 2014

(Left: GENERAL IDEA; Center: David Hart; Right: Nautica)

How To Wear Them: Whether horizontal, vertical or diagonal, color-blocked patterns are a casual and preppy look for this spring.

Treat these like your new classic black t-shirt and wear them with all your favorite pants and shorts.

7. Bomber Jackets

Bomber jackets men's fashion New York Fashion Week Spring 2014

(Clockwise from top: Tim Coppens; J. Crew; Shades of Grey by Micah Cohen; Ovaida & Sons; AllSaints; Calvin Klein)

How To Wear Them: By far the biggest trend from New York Fashion Week was men's bomber jackets. Whether they're leather, color-blocked, wool, or athletic, these jackets go with everything.

When you go shopping for one, make sure the sleeves don't hang past your upper wrist, and that the coat has a slim silhouette to keep it from looking too much like a bulky Letterman jacket.

We Found A Standing Desk That's Both Automatic And Affordable

$

stand desk standing desk

We finally found the standing desk that has everything and won't destroy your wallet.

Billed as the "most affordable automatic standing desk," Stand Desk has launched a Kickstarter campaign to get its product out to the market.

Already, 209 people have pledged $84,608 to the project.

It has an impressive array of features: Standard up and down controls (or deluxe memory control system), a number of different surface types and colors, and cable management in the back. But perhaps what's most impressive is the price: $399.

Standing desks of this caliber typically range anywhere from $700 all the way up to $4,000.

"[The] 'traditional' sit-to-stand desks are designed way more complicated than they should be," said Steven Yu, in an email to Business Insider. "I just simplified everything while finding the perfect balance between function, quality, and price."

The benefits of standing desks in general are noteworthy, with increased productivity, energy, and reduced lower back pain. A January article in The Washington Post even showed plenty of the health hazards to sitting.

Back pain, and more specifically, a motorcycle accident, was what pushed founder Steven Yu to create the product.

"After my motorcycle accident, I wanted a natural solution for my back pain," he told us. "But I didn’t want to spend thousands of dollars for an automatic standing desk."

Yu teamed up with a number of people that provided help and testing, to include Dr. Joan Vernikos, former Life Sciences Director at NASA, Dave Asprey, CEO of Bulletproof Executive, Bing Howenstien, CEO of Backjoy, and Robert Yung, former CTO of Intel and Oracle.

Here's the result:

How To Create A Super Strong Password With Ease

There’s A Secret Size At Starbucks That Makes For A Better Cappuccino

$
0
0

While espresso drink purists deride Starbucks for its gargantuan sizes — including the larger-than-a-human-stomach Trenta— the chain actually offers a secret smaller size that is perfect for an Italian-style cappuccino.

The unlisted size is called a "short," and every Starbucks is stocked with 8-ounce cups for the rare customer who orders it.

The history of this secret item dates back to the early days when Starbucks offered two sizes: an 8-ounce short and a 12-ounce tall. It was only as the Seattle brand expanded that it added larger sizes to accommodate customer demand: first the 16-ounce grande, then the 20-ounce venti. To simplify the menu at that point, the company stopped listing the short size, while keeping it around for old customers who liked it — no matter that calling the smallest listed size a tall struck many as annoying and confusing. And then came the 31-ounce Trenta, just one more step away from the "Italian coffeehouse tradition" to which the brand aspired.

You see, you can't make a good cappuccino in a 30-ounce cup and it gets hard in anything larger than 8-ounces.

As noted by Slate's Tim Harford, the World Barista Championship defines a traditional cappuccino as a "five- to six-ounce beverage." And yes, while I, a former Starbucks barista, noted last summer that Starbucks makes better cappuccinos than most places in America, this is only true if you order the right size.

A classic Italian cappuccino is a shot of espresso and a small dose of finely foamy hot milk. There's more milk than in a caffè macchiatto, which is just espresso plus foam, but less milk than in a caffè latte, which is espresso plus a bunch of hot milk plus a layer of foam.

It should look something like this:

cappuccino

It's nearly impossible to get enough microfoam to fill a large cup, and anyway you won't get a good ratio of espresso to milk. This should not be called a cappuccino:

cappuccino venti starbucks

The best option at Starbucks is the short: starbucks short

It's true that large cups comes at a cheaper cost per ounce and will provide a longer lasting drinking experience. But the short, which is cheaper than a tall, provides the brief, energizing, and delicious experience that makes a cappuccino such a nice way to start the morning.

You can also order a short size in other hot drinks. Don't worry, the barista will know what you're talking about.

But on a recent trip to Sin City, I was shocked by the number of lesser-known, reasonably priced establishments that offered excellent dining experiences.

More than 60 new restaurants have opened, been designed, or plan to open in Las Vegas, according to Travel & Leisure. Many of these are affordable establishments with entrées in the $15-$30 range. It makes sense that the food scene is expanding: thanks to Vegas’ nearly 40 million annual tourists, the restaurant industry rakes in an estimated $8 billion annually, according to Applied Analysis. The demand for great, attainable food is there, and the city has begun to deliver.

Contrast this with a decade ago, when the Vegas culinary scene was an arms race for hotels on the Strip to acquire a five-star restaurant. “When I first came 10 years ago, we felt a sort of competition between the restaurants that were within the casinos to set up these quality restaurants,” Joël Robuchon told Business Insider. “I knew the president of MGM, and he was very passionate about food and beverage. He came to Paris and asked me to open a high-end dining restaurant; he wanted somebody who already had three stars in the Michelin Guide.”

MGM Grand did ultimately open a Joël Robuchon, as well as Robuchon's L’Atelier, both of which now boast Michelin stars. For more ultra-high-end dining the Strip, the Bellagio has Picasso, a restaurant filled with works by the late artist, the Mandarin Oriental has highly-rated Twist, Aria has barMASA and Jean Georges Steakhouse, and Caesars Palace has Guy Savoy. The list goes on and on.

deep fried green beans TAP sports bar mgm grandIf you want to break the bank to eat amazing food, Las Vegas has you covered.

But whereas it used to be all about the fine dining, Vegas restaurants today are placing more value on quality food at affordable prices. Hotels now have sports bars, buffets, and sushi spots with ridiculously good food, and these places are mere doors away from the fine dining powerhouses that used to dominate the scene.

Take for instance TAP, a new sports bar that recently opened in the MGM Grand. With more tahn 60 huge flatscreen TVs lining the bars, and classic bar food like sliders and spinach dip on the menu, some foodies would walk right past it. But the executive chef Steve Barr has the best fried veggies in the city (his green beans and onion rings still manage to have a snap) and TAP’s Reuben sandwich is made with pastrami that melts in your mouth.

There aren't very many sports bars on the Strip, so it would be very easy for TAP to have simply relied on the standard beer and burgers. Instead, they make their own ice cream, cure their own meats, and offer a specialty beer flight menu.

And TAP isn't a rarity. House-cured meats, fresh ingredients, and homemade fare like bread or ice cream are becoming standard at casino establishments and on the Strip.

Bellagio buffet las vegasAnd then of course, there’s the true heart of the Las Vegas culinary scene, which has also seen a revamp: the buffets.

From the huge selection at the Bellagio Buffet to the amazing food at the Cosmopolitan’s Wicked Spoon and the high-class fare at the Bellagio’s Jasmine, Vegas buffets are shaking their abysmal reputations. The ones I tried were all top-notch, with cooks and staff at each station who were not only knowledgeable about how the food was prepared, but where it came from.

There’s no doubt the food scene in Las Vegas will continue to get better. Celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis is coming to the Cromwell and everyone in Vegas is excited about Daniel Boulud's upcoming DB Brasserie at Venetian, both of which will be opening on the Strip in 2014 and promise to only add to the city’s burgeoning foodie culture.

So the next time you’re in Sin City, skip the sinning and get right to the food.

Woodside, Calif. is officially the hottest luxury real estate market in the U.S., according to a new index  created by realty firm Coldwell Banker Previews International.

To compare different markets, the index used figures like average and median sale prices, volume, and sales in units.

Woodside has long been home to wealthy venture capitalists and tech entrepreneurs, in part because its secluded hillside location offers residents a good amount of privacy. Larry Ellison's lavish Japanese estate is located here, as is Steve Jobs' historic mansion

Like many other cities in Silicon Valley, the real estate market in Woodside is notoriously inflated. According to CNBC, one of the city's cheapest homes is a two-bedroom cottage situated on less than an acre of property. It's listed for $949,000

But Woodside wasn't the only ritzy Silicon Valley city to make an appearance on Coldwell Banker's ranking. Portola Valley, Woodside's neighbor to the south, came in third, while nearby Hillsborough came in fourth. Also ranking in the top 20 were Atherton, coming in tenth, and Los Altos Hills, in the seventeenth spot.

Here's the full ranking of luxury real estate markets in the U.S.:
