The Most And Least Generous People In Tech

Bill Gates

Inside Philanthropy has come up with a new list of the most generous donors in tech, basing the ranking on the size of their donations relative to their overall wealth.

The names who made the list may seem surprising, especially compared to other rankings of philanthropy. While the Chronicle of Philanthropy creates a list of the 50 largest donors any given year, this list in particular uses relative generosity as its main criteria.

12. Michael Dell

The Michael and Susan Dell Foundation has given away nearly $1 billion since 2000, equal to about 10% of their estimated net worth of $17.5 billion.

11. Paul Allen

The Microsoft co-founder gave away $327.6 million in 2011, making him the most generous American of that year. He's given away just over $1.5 billion of the estimated $16 billion he's worth.

Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook10. Mark Zuckerberg

The 29-year-old's $992-million gift was the single biggest donation of 2013. He's donated about $2 billion of his wealth, which is now estimated to be $28.5 billion.

9. Pierre Omidyar

E-bay founder Pierre Omidyar and his wife Pam have given away more than $1 billion, donating $225 million in 2013 alone.

8. David Bohnett

Bohnett made $300 million when he sold GeoCities to Yahoo! in 1998. Since then, his foundation has given away nearly $53.5 million to charitable causes, with a special focus on the LGBT community.

7. Irwin Jacobs

The Qualcomm founder and his wife Joan have been very generous over the past few decades, donating around $500 million of their fortune, estimated at $1.8 billion.

Skoll and Omidyar6. Jeff Skoll

When eBay's first president signed the Giving Pledge, he said he hoped to donate nearly all of his $3.8 billion "to the betterment of humanity."

5. Tim Gill

Gill made about $500 million when he sold Quark at the height of the dotcom boom. His foundation has given about $240 million towards LGBT initiatives.

4. Ed Scott

Scott, who made his fortune with a software company called BEA, isn't at the Forbes 400 level, but Inside Philanthropy describes him as "Silicon Valley's most effective global giver." His donations have gone towards fighting global poverty and disease, as well as projects to find better treatments for autism.

3. Bill Gates

Gates has donated more money than any other living person, but he wasn't first on Inside Philanthropy's list because his current net worth is $76 billion, nearly twice the endowment of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

2. Gordon Moore

Intel co-founder Gordon Moore and his wife Betty put about half of their wealth into their foundation in 2011. It has since made about $3 billion in grants, focused mostly on scientific research and Bay Area charities.

sandy lerner1. Leonard Bosack and Sandy Lerner

The Cisco co-founders have given more than anyone else, relative to their total wealth. They made $170 million when they walked away from their company in 1990, but they gave about 70% of that money away to charity.

The Least Generous Tech Leaders

Inside Philanthropy also compiled a list of the least generous people in tech. Though these executives have made valuable contributions to charity in the past, IP argues that these six people have donated the least amount of money compared to their total amassed wealth.

Among the biggest offenders are (not ranked): Jeff Bezos, Larry Page, Steve Ballmer, Larry Ellison, Jerry Yang, and Michael Birch.

A Chinese Property Developer Just Paid Nearly $2 Million For This Puppy

a79c676ebc1c1f2939a2f83014cfc8f8

A Tibetan mastiff puppy has been sold in China for almost $2 million, a report said Wednesday, in what could be the most expensive dog sale ever.

A property developer paid 12 million yuan ($1.9 million) for the one-year-old golden-haired mastiff at a "luxury pet" fair Tuesday in the eastern province of Zhejiang, the Qianjiang Evening News reported.

"They have lion's blood and are top-of-the-range mastiff studs," the dog's breeder Zhang Gengyun was quoted as telling the paper, adding that another red-haired canine had sold for 6 million yuan.

Enormous and sometimes ferocious, with round manes lending them a passing resemblance to lions, Tibetan mastiffs have become a prized status symbol among China's wealthy, sending prices skyrocketing.

The golden-haired animal was 80 centimetres (31 inches) tall, and weighed 90 kilograms (nearly 200 pounds), Zhang said, adding that he was sad to sell the animals. Neither was named in the report.

"Pure Tibetan mastiffs are very rare, just like our nationally treasured pandas, so the prices are so high," he said.

One red mastiff named "Big Splash" reportedly sold for 10 million yuan ($1.5 million) in 2011, in the most expensive dog sale then recorded.

The buyer at the Zhejiang expo was said to be a 56-year-old property developer from Qingdao who hopes to breed dogs himself, according to the report.

The newspaper quoted the owner of a mastiff breeding website as saying that last year one animal sold for 27 million yuan at a fair in Beijing.

But an industry insider surnamed Xu told the paper that the high prices may be the result of insider agreements among breeders to boost their dogs' worth.

"A lot of the sky-high priced deals are just breeders hyping each other up, and no money actually changes hands," Xu said.

Owners say the mastiffs, descendants of dogs used for hunting by nomadic tribes in central Asia and Tibet, are fiercely loyal and protective.

Lifelong Sweethearts Die Of Heart Attacks Within 15 Minutes Of Each Other

Tom and Naomi Shirley

It's a love story with a final chapter that practically floats off the pages of a Nicholas Sparks novel.

After 45 years of married life, Tom Shirley and his wife Naomi both passed away of heart attacks within 15 minutes of each other on March 15.

They died separately at the same Florida hospital.

Mr. Shirley, 83, was taken to the Cleveland Clinic with heart problems Saturday afternoon, reports the Sun Sentinel. Mrs. Shirley, 75, "succumbed to a heart attack herself after being summoned from their Southwest Ranches home for what doctors said may be a last visit with her husband."

Their son Troy said Mrs. Shirley died on her way to the hospital to visit her husband.

"Dad didn't know that she had passed, and she didn't know that he had passed," Troy Shirley said. "I don't understand it, but it's beautiful."

This isn't the first story of its kind.

In February, New Jersey residents 95-year-old Olympia DeNittis and 94-year-old Michael DeNittis died just hours apart after a 60-year marriage.

In August, a couple from Ohio married for nearly 66 years died just 11 hours apart in a nursing-home room they shared in their final days.

The Watches Wall Street's CEOs Wear

$

Masters of the Universe aren't known for having anything resembling a jewelry collection except for one item — a watch. They're collectible, gorgeous and at times incredibly expensive pieces that can be handed down from generation to generation

Exactly the type of thing a titan of any industry would want.

We've put together a list and commentary about the wristwatches worn by some of Wall Street's most public executives.

As expected, a couple of the watches are flashy. A few of them are really, really cheap by Wall Street standards. And one prominent banker doesn't even wear a watch. Ever.

(If you know of the type of timepiece that an executive at your firm wears, feel free to send the tip to jlaroche@businessinsider.com)

Check it out:

Lloyd Blankfein, Goldman Sachs CEO

Lloyd Blankfein, watchGoldman Sachs CEO Lloyd Blankfein rocks a Swatch with what appears to be a clear plastic band. Swatch's tend to range between $50 to $245. It's also not exactly the sort of timepiece you'd expect a chief executive of a Wall Street investment bank to wear. Then again, Goldman is "the most hipster" bank on Wall Street.

Jack Bogle, Founder of the Vanguard Group

Jack BogleInvesting legend Jack Bogle, the founder of the Vanguard Group, wears a $14 wristwatch he received from a shareholder.

"I received in the mail a wristwatch from a devoted shareholder in California. On the dial were printed our Vanguard logo, my name, and a phrase that was an indication I was still looking out for our shareholders: "Still on Watch." It was also an outrageous pun: "Still on Watch." Confident that it would be my rabbit’s foot, I put the watch on my wrist, where, having proved itself, it remains to this day. (Yes, I knew about the $50 limit on gifts. So I checked the catalog for the price. It was $14. Talk about value!)," he wrote.

Bond guru Jeff Gundlach, CEO of DoubleLine Capital

Jeff GundlachWe learned about Jeff Gundlach's watch collection when he had a bunch of his artwork and personal property stolen.

According to the Santa Monica Police Department report, the watches that were stolen included a Glashutte, Breitling, A. Lange & Sohne, TAG Heuer and a Patek Philippe. We couldn't nail down prices for these specific models, but every one can run in the tens of thousands of dollars or more.

See below:

Talk about some serious wrist candy. Fortunately, the DoubleLine Capital CEO brilliantly helped the FBI recover his stolen property.

Hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman, CEO of Pershing Square

Ackman watchBill Ackman, the CEO of Pershing Square Capital, sports a watch with a black band and dark face. It's classy and not flashy. We can't identify the watchmaker, though.

Private equity chief executive Lynn Tilton

Lynn Tilton watchPrivate equity chief Lynn Tilton, the founder of Patriarch Partners, wears a MASSIVE bejeweled timepiece by Jacob the Jeweler. It's definitely fits her "dust to diamonds" persona.

Hedge funder Phil Falcone

FalconeHedge funder Phil Falcone wears a black sports watch (it looks like Casio G-Shock) and some friendship bracelets and beads (We're assuming his twin girls made those for him).

James Gorman, Morgan Stanley CEO

James Gorman watchJames Gorman wears a stainless steel Rolex Daytona, according to Ben Clymer, the founder of watch site Hodinkee.

Jamie Dimon, JPMorgan Chase CEO

Jamie DimonJamie Dimon doesn't wear a watch. Ever. Apparently, he doesn't care for jewelry.

Pat Acton, a former career counselor in central Iowa, spent some 1,000 hours a year between 2007 and 2010 building a matchstick model of the mythic Minas Tirith city from "Lord of the Rings." The finished replica contains 420,000 matchsticks and 23,000 small support wooden blocks. It stands over six feet tall in the Matchstick Marvels museum Acton founded.Minas Tirith Matchsticks 2"Number one is I've been a JRR Tolkien fan since I was a kid," Acton told Business Insider. "The movies reignited my interest in 'Lord of the Rings' and I wanted to build something iconic from the story."

The model includes hundreds of city buildings, the Citadel, the Tree of Gondor, and the White Tower of Ecthelion, all of which should excite LOTR fans.Minas Tirith Matchsticks 3Acton has built matchstick models for the past 23 years as a hobby, but after retirement he took on a three-year contract to construct models full time with Ripley's Believe It Or Not. He has about a year and a half left on that arrangement now.Minas Tirith Matchsticks 1"I used to buy all the matchsticks the grocery store had and cut the tips off myself," Acton said. "I was just interested in the pure wood. But it's time consuming to cut the tips. After about 10 years, my wife said, 'Why don't you contact the match makers and ask to buy them without the tips?'"Minas Tirith Matchsticks 4People buy matches so rarely these days that when Acton gets them, they're made-to-order. He uses U.S. wood matches like Fire Chief, Blue Tip and Diamond, and goes through a half-million match splints every year. Minas Tirith Matchsticks 5

Porsche Is Putting A New Engine In Every New 911 GT3 After Fires Destroy Two Cars

$

Porsche 991 911 GT3

Porsche will replace the engine on every 2014 911 GT3 it has sold, after fires sparked by engine damage destroyed two cars.

The automaker took this rare step after it alerted owners last month of a potential defect and asked that the cars be taken off the road immediately.

785 cars had already been delivered. The engine issue has not led to any injuries.

A Porsche UK spokesperson confirmed to the Daily Telegraph that the defect was traced back to faulty screws used to join the piston connecting rods to the crankshaft, causing damage to the crankcase.

The defect resulted in two examples of the cars being gutted by fire in Europe earlier this year.

Porsche CEO Matthias Mueller told Bloomberg, "(The company) is not taking any risks when it comes to the safety of (its) customers." He also made it clear the firm is "very keen to ... allay concerns and keep any disgruntled customers."

The Porsche 911 GT3 is a lighter, performance-oriented variant of the automaker's flagship 911 sports car. Selling for more than $190,000, the GT3 is named after the FIA GT3 Championship racing series.

We Tested Taco Bell's New Breakfast Menu — Here's The Verdict

Taco Bell breakfast

Taco Bell is launching breakfast nationwide March 27.

The new menu is expected to challenge McDonald's morning offerings. The breakfast selections will be available from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. at most Taco Bell locations.

We got the chance to try the Waffle Taco, A.M. Crunchwrap, and Cinnabon Delights at a special testing event in New York.

First, we tried the much-touted Waffle Taco. This item has received the most media attention and hype. Taco Bell breakfast Scrambled eggs, sausage and cheese are wrapped inside a waffle shell for a total of 370 calories. The chain gave us syrup to pour on top. A bacon version will also be available in stores.

In general, we liked the taste of the Waffle Taco. The waffle itself is savory, so definitely add syrup if you want the sweetness. The egg-to-waffle-to-sausage ratio was perfect. No one flavor dominated the experience, and they melded together nicely. Taco Bell breakfast The item held together pretty well—an impressive feat considering how delicate waffles generally are.

Our only tip is to have plenty of napkins on hand. The taco was somewhat messy and left some grease on our fingers.

The Waffle Taco is probably best to eat in the restaurant, at your desk, or at home. It's a little too messy for eating in the car.

Next, we tried the 660-calorie A.M. Crunchwrap, which consists of bacon, scrambled eggs, shredded cheese, crispy hash brown, and creamy chipotle sauce grilled in a tortilla.Taco Bell breakfast The result? Delicious.

The A.M. Crunchwrap was our favorite by far. The crispy hashbrown and grilled tortilla provide nice textures, while the cheese and sauce provide the right amount of richness.

This mix of flavors was consistent throughout, thanks to the quesadilla-like format. You never end up with a bite of just egg, hashbrown, or cheese that you might get with a breakfast burrito.

Here's a deconstructed view of the product. Taco Bell breakfast The item is also incredibly neat and portable and we weren't left with any grease on our hands after eating. We would feel comfortable eating this item one-handed in the car on the way to work. The grilled tortilla stays together nicely, and the crunchwrap is delicious up to the last bite.

Definitely order this.

Finally, we tried the Cinnabon Delights. These are the only new items that are available all day.

The Delights come in packs of four, totaling 310 calories, and are about the size of traditional donut holes. The outside is covered in a cinnamon and sugar mix, while the inside is filled with a gooey, icing-like substance. Taco Bell breakfast We can vouch that these were indulgent and delicious. The filling tastes more like custard (think of a creme-filled donut), than Cinnabon's icing.

A tip—eat the entire Delight at once. If you take a bite, you'll probably end up with the filling on your face and fingers.

We loved the Cinnabon Delights with coffee, but they were so rich that it was difficult to eat more than two. We suggest sharing this dessert with a friend.

Overall, Taco Bell's breakfast menu is a likely challenger for McDonald's. The items are innovative, fun, portable, and delicious.

We definitely recommend trying it next week.

How To Keep The Spark In A Long-Term Relationship

People With An Offbeat Sense Of Fashion Get More Respect

$

lady gaga

A series of studies by the Harvard Business School has confirmed what Lady Gaga has known ever since she debuted her lightening bolt-covered eye and meat dress: people tend to like outlandish dressers.

The research, by doctoral student Silvia Bellezza and two Harvard professors, examines how individuals perceive status and competence from those "not conforming"  particularly in their style.

And what they found was somewhat surprising: that people grant higher status and competence to the more unique individuals, viewing them as more autonomous.

In order to reach their conclusions, the researchers conducted their research in the lab on students and evaluations in the community, reports Shirley S. Wang of The Wall Street Journal.

One experiment included sending two types of people into luxury boutiques in Milan: one wearing gym clothes and the other in fancy clothes. The salespeople in the shops actually assumed the schlumpy-looking clients were going to be the big spenders. They perceived them as confident enough to be dressed down, and therefore "more apt to be a celebrity making a purchase than someone wrapped in fur," Wang wrote.

The abstract from the study goes further by stating that odd behavior "can act as a particular form of conspicuous consumption and lead to positive inferences of status and competence in the eyes of others."

Another experiment included students judging a bearded professor wearing a T-shirt over a clean shaven one wearing a tie. It was scruff for the win.

However, there are no rules without exceptions. And one of the big exceptions in this case is if the behavior or style is perceived as completely unintentional. "In order to think that the person's a big shot, you have to understand that the person is willingly engaging in this nonconforming conduct," Bellezza said.

Both will have your LED lights, your bottles, your models, your general debauchery.

It's just that for one night, you can switch off between the two whenever, however you want.

It all goes down on April 19. Here are the set times:

MAP: Residents Of These States Are Most Likely To Have A Passport

Over 100 million passports are registered to U.S. citizens. The travel rewards management website MileCards recently crunched the numbers to discover people who live in New Jersey are the most likely to hold a passport. At 54%, more than half the state's residents have one, which blows past the national average of 37%.

New York, Massachusetts, Alaska, and Connecticut round out the top five states for passport holders.

MileCards suggests northeastern residents are more likely to have passports because of their proximity to Canada and Europe, and the Caribbean, which is a popular destination during harsh winters. Major airports are also within easy distance to people across those states, a further inducement to international travel.

The states with the fewest passport holders include Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Mississippi, where only 15% of the population is registered for passports.

MileCards made its calculations based on dividing the State Department's annual passport statistics by the 2013 U.S. Census population estimates.

Unbelievable Photos Capture The Disappearing Art Of Hunting Honey In Nepal's Cliffs

In the foothills of the Himalayas in Nepal, the Gurung people practice an ancient tradition. Twice a year, the Gurung men gather around the cliffs that are home to the world’s largest honeybee and, with 200-foot ladders and long poles, they harvest the bee’s wild honey.

It’s a fascinating event, one that documentary photographer Andrew Newey knew he had to see. This past year, Newey stayed with the Gurung tribe in a hilltop village, photographing their culture and attending the annual autumn honey hunt.

The hunt that Newey witnessed was six weeks later than usual due to a dwindling bee population. Any further decreases in the population could put the entire ecosystem of the region in jeopardy. Without intervention, the honey hunt could soon be a thing of the past.

But while it's here Newey snapped and shared some photos from the hunt. You can check out the rest at his website, where he sells fine-art prints from the project. He also shares photos from new projects on his Facebook page.

Take a look at the honey hunt:

Before a hunt can commence the honey hunters are required to perform a ceremony to placate the cliff gods. This involves sacrificing a sheep and offering flowers, fruits, and rice, and praying to the cliff gods to ensure a safe hunt.01When they reach the cliffs, the hunters use smoke to draw the bees out of their nest.02

The honey hunter clings precariously to the rope ladder, while he waits for the rising smoke to drive the bees out of the nests.

05

Most of the nests are located on steep inaccessible, south-west facing cliffs to avoid predators and for increased exposure to direct sunlight.

03Using precision and skills mastered over many years, the "cutter" jousts tentatively at a bee's nest with a sharpened stick known as a "tango."04

One of the Gurung men watches from the base of the cliff as the cutter repositions himself on the rope ladder 200 feet above.06As the honey hunter descends the rope ladder, the blood, blisters, and bee stings that are synonymous with this treacherous tradition become visible.07After a 3 hour trek back up to the village, carrying approximately 20kg of honey, a hunter enjoys a hard earned piece of honeycomb by the fire.09The honey is divided up among the villagers and one of the first uses is for a cup of honey tea.10

Student Hazing Is A Serious Problem At Portuguese Universities

Hazing rituals have become almost synonymous with Greek organizations at American college campuses — so much so that one of the largest fraternities in the country recently banned their new member pledging process in order to keep students safe.

However, hazing is not a uniquely Greek problem — and may even be more prevalent outside of America. A recent New York Times article on Portugal's hazing problems demonstrates how the European country is reacting to the drowning deaths of six students last year.

The six students were reportedly at a rented beach house to prepare for their university's hazing. It is unclear how or why they drowned, and the one surviving student "has since been receiving psychological treatment and has not given his account of the events," according to The Times.

It is also unclear how much of a connection these deaths have to any official university actions.

The students' school, Lusófona University, is relatively new  it was founded in 1989. As The Times reports, many newer Portuguese universities have used hazing to link themselves to the historic University of Coimbra, where "hazing has a strong and storied tradition."

"Many of our universities, especially private ones, are of bad quality, so people are desperately trying to recreate the feeling that studying there is something special," one professor told The Times.

Portugal's hazing practices are also more widespread than those in America. "Unlike at American universities, and others in Europe, hazing is not limited to fraternities or sororities, but is a general rite of initiation for first-year students," The Times reports.

Since the six students deaths, a debate seems to have erupted in the country, between those who want hazing banned and those who see it as a bonding tool for new students. One student told The Times that hazing is "a great way to break the ice between students and give a sense of family belonging to people who come from everywhere."

This discussion appears to be happening more frequently around Europe. Last summer, an elite Swedish boarding school was shut down after multiple reports of hazing.
