Here's The Problem With Speed Reading

open book

Ever since startup Spritz released a tool that let's you finish a 233-page novel in 77 minutes, speed reading has become a hot topic.

But is it really a magical efficiency booster?

Steve Leveen, author of "A Little Guide To Your Well-Read Life" and CEO of specialty office retailer Levenger, says speed reading works, but "it's not that important."

"What’s important is what you think about after you read, what you conclude, what you do with what you read," he told Business Insider.

Leveen, who has a Ph.D in sociology from Cornell, compares speed-reading to the ability to run quickly during a tennis match. "Yeah, running fast is good, but it’s only one part, and not even the biggest part, of the game," he said.

In fact, speed reading gained widespread appeal back in the 60s. Schools even started teaching the skill, but its popularity has declined since then. Apparently, it wasn't that useful.

"Step back for a second and say, 'Well, what’s the purpose of reading in the first place?' The purpose is to learn more about the world, learn about subjects you’re interested in, and then act upon what you learn, right? Live your life in a virtuous circle of reading and doing," Leveen said.

So while speed reading can help you understand what a book says, only you can take the time to determine what a book means.

The most valuable part of reading may be those a-ha moments, where readers stare into space and process new information. "At these moments, your reading speed slows to zero, but your understanding soars," Leveen wrote in his book.

While speed reading has its uses, so do other strategies, like simple preparation.

"There are all these ways you can sort of preview the book and prime yourself to get the most of it," he said. In the age of information, we can watch a TED Talk, scan a copy of a book on Google, or even listen to an audio version.

And most importantly, we should know when to quit."So many people are still suffering from the 'clean your plate mentality.' They feel compelled to finish it," Leveen said. He abides by the 50-page rule — if you don't like the content after 50 pages, move on.

"Put it on a special shelf called 'maybe later,'" Leveen said.

A water tank full of fish burst open at the T-Rex Cafe in Downtown Disney on Monday. A diner was able to capture the leak on video and post it on Instagram before staff ushered guests out of the restaurant.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, everything ended well with employees "scooping up the fish in a net as they brought out trash cans and long-handled squeegees."

No word on if they found Nemo.

Check out the video of the leak below:

Karl Lagerfeld, the eccentric designer behind Chanel and Fendi, has launched a new project that doesn't have much to do with fashion.

His latest project is an app called emotiKarl, where users can communicate with their fellow fashionista friends using emojis inspired by the German fashion designer himself.

On the app, you'll find  some fingerless gloves, an image of Lagerfeld in his signature ponytail and shades, and even his beloved cat, Choupettekarl lagerfeld emoji

According to the New York Daily News, Lagerfeld created the app to promote his new line of fragrances, Karl Parfums

The only complaint thus far is that the emojis haven't been integrated with the iPhone's messaging app, meaning that users have to open the emotiKarl app separately to use the images.

The app is available for free on Apple and Android devices.

New Zealand photographer Henry Hargreaves has always liked to play with his food. In his newest collaboration with food stylist Caitlin Levin and typographer Sarit Melmed, Hargreaves takes playing with food to another level by creating maps that use the iconic foods of the countries and continents that they depict.

Before he was a photographer, Hargreaves worked in the food industry and found himself fascinated by how what people ordered reflected their personality. In many ways, Food Maps similarly reflects how what we eat connects with who we are.

Hargreaves, Levin, and Melmed shared some of their playful maps with us here, but you can see more of Hargreaves and Levin's work at their website. Note that each map is made using real food.

20 Handyman Skills That Everyone Should Have

$

fixing a sink

When it comes to the heavy handyman stuff  serious electrical work, deep plumbing, anything to do with a septic tank  we understand why you might want to leave it to the pros.

But a man should also know his way around a toolbox. Even if you live in an apartment or condo, it’s important to be able to take care of the basics yourself.

Plus, if you’ve been calling a plumber every time your sink gets clogged, then you’re throwing away your money.

But most importantly, knowing how to take care of things yourself will give you self-assurance and a greater sense of ownership over your home  which in turn will make you likelier to pick up more handyman skills as your confidence grows.

Men used to learn a lot of basic carpentry, plumbing, electricity and other maintenance skills from their fathers as a matter of course, but for those of you who didn’t get these lessons, here are 20 skills every man should have to be the master of his own castle.

1. Find a stud

Studfinders  the tool that spawned a thousand easy jokes  aren’t expensive, but why depend on a gadget when you can find the stud yourself? Studs are the vertical beams that support walls, and they provide support when mounting decorations, TV screens or to anchor heavy furniture. There should be a stud on either side of each window, as well as beside electrical boxes for switches and outlets. Another giveaway is to look where any nails have been hammered into the molding, as they’re usually driven into the stud. Studs tend to be set every 16 or 24 inches around the room, so once you’ve found one you can measure the rest. To check, you can sound out where the studs are: when you tap the wall, it will mostly have a slightly hollow sound but it will sound noticeably denser where there’s a stud.

2. Anchor a bookcase to a wall

Now that you can find a stud, it’s time to use it. Heavy standalone objects like bookshelves should be attached to the wall to ensure that a seismic event, household accident or super-athletic bout of sex doesn’t bring it down.

First, find the studs in the wall where you want to anchor your bookshelf. Depending on what kind of bookcase you’re anchoring and how much damage you’re willing to see it take, there are a few ways to approach this. If the bookshelf is backless, you’re golden: simply measure and space two L-brackets at least 24 inches apart, making sure one of them is on the stud. Use a pencil to mark the drill holes on both the wall and the shelf; hammer or drill a pilot hole in the marked spots; then screw the L-bracket to the side or underside of the shelf and to the wall.

For a bookcase with a back, first measure the case, minus its frame (so, the width of the case’s shelves), then cut a 1x6 piece of lumber to match. Drill two or three evenly-spaced pilot holes at the height of the case’s top shelf, making sure that at least one of these goes into a stud. Mark their locations on the piece of lumber you cut, then place the lumber and drill a second set of pilot holes so that the holes in the lumber line up with those in the walls. Then screw the board to the wall with screws long enough to pass through the board and drywall and into the wall stud. Finally, attach two L-brackets to the underside of the book case’s top shelf, then return the bookshelf to its place and screw the brackets to the mounted piece of lumber.

3. Spackle a hole or scuff

Nothing mars your man-cave more than the unsightly holes and bumps that result from relocating or removing your wall art. To keep your pad looking good, get in the habit of keeping spackle, a putty knife and paint around. First, clean up any loose bits or anything that sticks out from the hole you want to fix. Spread a bit of spackle over the hole using the putty knife, pressing hard to lay a thin, smooth layer  spackle shrinks, so it’s OK if there’s a little extra over the hole. Let it dry a few hours, and if needed, apply a second layer. Smooth the spackle with a fine-grade sandpaper until it’s flush with the rest of the wall, then paint over the damaged area.

4. Fix a loose tile

Loose or wobbly tiles are the precursors of broken tiles, making this a minor problem worth getting fixed before it gets major. First, run a preheated iron over the loose tile and surrounding area to loosen its adhesive, then gently lift the tile out. Clean the area underneath with alcohol, then scrape it clean with the putty knife to get all of the old adhesive off. Apply a new coating of tile adhesive to both the gap and to the back of the tile and carefully replace the tile. Use a rolling pin to press the tile into place and get rid of any air bubbles, then wipe clean any excess adhesive on or around the tile. If it’s a floor tile, weigh the tile down with a heavy object, like a stack of books, until the bond sets.

5. Caulk a shower, sink or tub

This one’s almost fun. If you notice that there’s a bit of leakage around your sink, shower or bathtub, it might be time to replace the caulking  that line of putty or gel at the seam where the basin meets the wall or floor. Caulking loses effectiveness over time, so you should reseal it once a year.

First, use a plastic putty knife to scrape off the old caulking, then clean the surface with rubbing alcohol. Apply a stripe of masking tape above and below where you’re applying your caulk  this will give you a clean, even-looking line. Take your tube of caulk  there are numerous kinds, but choosing one with silicone will give you better mildew protection  and load it into the caulking gun, following the directions on the package to cut open the application tip and making sure that you pierce through any secondary layer of packaging inside.

Smoothly move the caulking gun along the seam you want to patch while depressing the caulking gun’s trigger evenly. Once it’s applied, use your finger to smooth and flatten the line, removing any excess caulk, then peel off masking tape. Let the caulking dry for at least a day or two before exposing it to water or moisture.

6. Fix a leaky faucet

The details depend on the model, but the basics are the same: In the end, the solution is almost always to replace a worn-down or faulty washer, O-ring or stem. The following steps will guide you through identifying the problem, but make sure you match the size precisely when you replace any damaged parts.

First, turn off your water, both from the handles over the sink and the mainline, usually a small valve attached to the pipes under your sink. Next, very gently use your flat-head screwdriver to remove the knob handle(s); use a little penetrating oil for lubrication if it feels too tight to slip off easily. Loosen the packing nut with a wrench. This should let you spot the stem, which you can also remove, then check for damage. Do the same with the O-ring and washer, as one of these three elements is likely the culprit. Replace any damaged parts, then reassemble the faucet in the same order  washer and O-ring, stem, packing nut, screw, handle  turn the water back on, and test the water.

If it’s still leaky, then you’ve done what you can. The problem runs deeper and it’s time to call a plumber.

7. Unclog a drain

Depending on the extent of the clog, you’ve got a few options here. First, try to clear the drain with a mixture of vinegar, hot water and baking soda  a few good glugs should clear any soft blockages like grease or product. If that doesn’t do the trick, your next stop is the plunger  not the one you use for your toilet, dude; you deserve better than that. Fill the sink half-full of water, then plunge the sink drain like you would a toilet, pumping the rubber part to create suction.

Still clogged? Check the trap. Place a bucket under your pipes, then unscrew the trap  the curved piece of pipe that connects your sink to the vertical pipe  either by hand or using a pipe wrench. Empty the water and clear any clogs, then return the trap to its place, reattach to the other pipes, and test by running some water to see whether the drain is cleared. And if that doesn’t work…

8. Snake a drain

No, it’s not glamorous, but you’ve got to get that gunk out of there. To do this, you’ll need a drain auger, a coiled spiral tool that pushes or drills through a deep clog; if you don’t have your own, most building centers rent both manual and electric models.

First, try the drain: Push the end of the snake into the opening and turn its drum handle clockwise, sending the auger cable down the drain until you feel resistance. Keep rotating the snake until the resistance passes, then pull it out  whatever’s plugging up the sink will likely come out with it. Run water to ensure that the clog has passed.

If it’s still obstructed, then the problem likely runs deeper. Under your sink, remove the horizontal pipe that connects the trap to the stub pipe in the wall, either by hand or using a pipe wrench. Turn the snake handle clockwise, while pushing the auger further into the pipe, trying to catch and pull anything that provides resistance, as above. Once you’ve cleared the problem, retract the cable from the stub pipe and re-attach the trap and horizontal pipe.

9. Seal a pavement crack

If you don’t live in an apartment, your empire (and its maintenance) could well extend out into the driveway. Sadly, cracks in concrete and asphalt are a reality of life  ones that, left unaddressed, will develop into a full-blown potholes. Luckily, they’re easy to fix. Before you start, remove any plants or debris from the crack, first with a screwdriver or knife tip, then by giving it a once-over with the garden hose to blast out anything deeper. Let the crack dry.

When it’s dry, apply crack filler until it’s flush with the rest of the surface you’re repairing, then wait at least 24 hours until it’s fully dry. If the crack’s still visible, go for a second coat. Wait a good one to two days before walking or driving on the crack once you’ve repaired it, to ensure that it’s fully set.

10. Change a shower head

To remove the old shower head, turn a wrench counter-clockwise to loosen its notch, then screw off the old head with your hands. Use a rag soaked with vinegar or a little bit of alcohol to scrub off any scum or residue around the old shower head stem. Wrap the end of the stem pipe with a few layers of Teflon tape, then use your fingers to smooth the tape. Install the replacement head, tightening it onto the pipe clockwise by hand. Turn the shower on to check for leaks  if it’s still spouting, tighten the new shower head with a wrench, being careful to proceed gradually to prevent over-tightening.

11. Clean the gutters

Regardless of the climate you live in, cleaning out the gutters is part and parcel of living in a house, rather than an apartment or condo  and not doing it will give you a bigger headache in the long run. If your gutters are higher than one story, then it might be time to hire a pro. But if they’re on the first floor, you should be able to handle this yourself.

First, get up on a ladder, making sure it’s stable. You can use a stand-off, or ladder stabilizer, to avoid damaging the gutters or house siding. First, use a trowel to dig out dead leaves and other debris that’s collected in the gutters, collecting it in a bucket or garbage bag. Next, flush the pipes clean with a hose  the higher the pressure, the better. Finally, use the hose to flush out the downspouts, making sure to check that the water flows through without blockage.

12. Replace a toilet seat

This one’s a small chore that can make a world of difference. First, open the bolt caps, the plastic snap-shut lid at the back of the toilet seat. Reach around and under the toilet seat to the nut that secures the seat to the bowl, and grip this with an adjustable wrench. Holding the nut, unscrew the two seat bolts and lift off the old toilet seat. Place the new seat, aligning its anchor bolts with the two holes in the toilet base. Push the bolts through the holes, then screw on the nuts from the underside by hand. Make sure that the seat is centered, then finish tightening the two nuts with a wrench.

13. Tighten a loose door hinge

If you notice an interior door sticking or scraping, it’s probably time to tighten up its hinges. If you can jiggle the door up and down when you grab it by the lock side, then this is your culprit  but it’s almost criminally easy to fix. First, find and remove any loose screws in the hinges. For each removed screw, take a wooden matchstick, dip it in carpenter’s glue, and drive it into the screw hole, then break or cut off any part of the matchstick that sticks out. Drive each screw back into the patched hole, and the matchstick-glue combo should hold it secure.

14. Use anchor screws to hang heavy objects

Sometimes there just isn’t a stud where you need it, but there’s no need to let that mess with your feng shui. It just means that you’ll have to anchor your screws into the wallboard. Be warned, though: While anchored screws do give you a bit more leverage while you’re hanging things like artwork, a mirror or a small shelf, no amount of anchoring is going to let you hang heavy objects from plaster or drywall without support from a stud.

First, buy your anchors  you’ll need to use a metal anchor for plaster walls, while plastic anchors work better in drywall. The anchor also needs to match the size of the screws you’re using, and these should be at least 1.5 inches long to secure your hanging. Drill or hammer your pilot holes where you want to hang something the heavier the object, the more anchors you’ll need to hold it up. Gently hammer in the anchor until it’s flush with the wall, then screw in the screw, leaving about a quarter-inch to hang your mounted object on.

15. Change a doorknob

Unscrew the two screws in the handle’s face plate (the piece that fixes the door to the door jamb), knob plate (the piece that fixes the knob to the door) and strike plate (the piece in the door jamb with a slot for the latch). Pull the handles off both sides of the door, slide out the face plate and pawl and remove the strike plate. If the new knob you’re installing is a different size than the one you’re replacing, use a hammer and chisel to adjust the openings in the door and door jamb.

To install the new knob, first push the new pawl mechanism and face plate into the side of the door, making sure that the latch faces the same direction that the door will close so that it connects correctly with the strike plate, then screw the face plate into place. Insert the handles into the door so that the pawl’s square peg fits into its slot in each knob, the screw holes align with threaded cylinders on each side, and any levers and locks face the right direction  then screw each knob plate into place. Finish it off by screwing on the strike plate.

16. Change a furnace filter

Furnace filters should be changed at least every three month  and more often if you smoke in your house or have pets that shed heavily. First, remove the vent cover  depending on the furnace model, this will either be a large ventilation grate in the wall, floor or ceiling or else in the furnace itself. Look to see if there are arrows on the screen  some models have to face a specific direction to function  and note which direction they point. Put the old filter directly in a garbage bag (or else it’ll spread dust everywhere), then slide in the new filter, making sure it faces the correct direction, and replace the vent cover.

17. Replace a screen window

Take down the window frame and lay it on a flat surface. Pry the old screen out of its frame. If the frame is wood, you can rip the old screen out of the staples or nails used to attach it; if the frame’s metal or vinyl, look for a black rubber seal, the spline, and use a screwdriver to pry the spline out. Roll the new screen over the top of the frame, then cut it so that there’s one inch of extra screen around the frame’s edges.

For a wood frame, use a hammer or staple gun to attach the stretched screen to the outside of the frame. For a metal or vinyl frame, use a spline tool or putty knife to force the spline and the screen into the window groove. Secure one corner of the screen and pull the rest of the screen tight as you work your way around the frame, then use a screwdriver to attach the spline and screen into the frame’s groove in each corner. Finish it up by cutting away any excess screen, then return the frame to the window.

18. Paint like a pro

While pretty much anyone can paint indoor walls, doing it right means taking steps for a neat, clean job. Before you start, repair any holes or scuffs in the wall with spackle. Prep the room for painting: Cover the floor and any furniture you can’t move with a canvas or plastic sheet, taping down its edges, and remove any light switch plates and electrical outlet covers and cover those with tape too.

Next, use a pole-sander and 120-grit sandpaper to sand the walls  this helps the wall take paint better and more evenly  then vacuum the sanding dust off the walls and run a wet cloth or sponge all over the walls. Apply lines of painter’s tape wherever there is an edge that isn’t being painted  the floor, around the ceiling and any wall you don’t want to be on the same color. Take some care with this, as uneven or hastily applied tape will create a sloppy line to your paint.

You might need to apply a coat of primer, a lighter coat of paint that helps your final color pop. You should definitely prime the wall if it’s never been painted, if you spackled any damaged spots, if the existing paint is glossy or if you’re painting over a darker colour. Let your primer coat fully dry before you start painting  an hour minimum for latex-based paints, and at least eight hours for other kinds.

For the main act, start by using an angled brush to paint a 2-inch line in each corner. For the walls themselves, you should use a roller. First wet the roller, then dip it into the paint colour and roll it in the paint try until it’s evenly coated. Apply the paint all over the walls in M and W-shaped motions, then let the paint dry.

19. Stop a toilet that runs

toilet that “runs,” or where the tank is constantly refilling with water, is one of the easiest handyman fixes. The culprit is likely the flapper valve, a rubber flap in the toilet tank that controls the flow of water into the bowl.

Remove the toilet tank lid and set it aside. Inside the tank you’ll find a balloon-like ball called an overflow tube, which should lie flush with the tank’s waterline; the tube will be attached to flapper guides, arms secured to the rubber flapper at the tank’s base. A common problem is that the chain or rod that connects the flapper to the flapper guides breaks or snaps free; if this is the case, just replace or reattach the piece and the toilet should flush as normal. If the chain is still attached but is slack, then you need to adjust its length  simply disconnect the wire from the flapper guide and reconnect it to a different hole in the bar.

20. Change a light switch

First, shut off the power. Turn the power off at the breaker  and make sure to test that you’ve flipped the right breaker and the power’s definitely off before you start meddling with electricity, preferably with a voltage tester.

Use a screwdriver to remove the switch plate cover, then unscrew the switch’s mounting screws (usually found at the top and bottom) from the electrical box and pull the switch out if the wall with the wires still attached. There will be two or three wires attached to the switch: an incoming hot wire (black), a return wire (any color except green) and maybe a grounding wire (either green or plain copper)  although exceptions abound. Use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the wires from the switch, then cut the wire connection or use needle-nose pliers to remove the wires from the terminals. Remove the insulation from each wire with wire strippers, and use needle-nose pliers to make a small loop at the end of each wire. Get ready to connect the new switch, but make sure it’s in the right position  the switch turned down with the word “off” showing.

Attach the wires to the new switch in the same positions where they were connected in the old switch, hooking the loops over the new switch’s terminals and then tightening them. Mount the new switch into the electrical box and reattach the switch’s face plate.

Belfort is the author of a bestselling, tell-all memoir that chronicled his boozy, drug-fueled high-flying Wall Street lifestyle running '90s-era boiler room Stratton Oakmont.

The convicted felon's book was recently adapted into a film directed by Martin Scorsese starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Belfort was arrested in 1998. In 2003, he was convicted for securities fraud and money laundering. He served a 22-month prison sentence after being sentenced to four years. He was also ordered to pay $110.4 million in restitution to victims of Stratton Oakmont. He hasn't finished paying them back yet either.

While the nearly 4,000 square-foot California home is much smaller compared to his former palatial Long Island home, it's still incredibly nice.

Now we're going to take a tour.

Clarification: It's unclear if Belfort currently lives in the home.

You Can Own The Most Amazing Door In The World

kinetic door klemens torggler evolution

Last month, the world was taken by Austrian artist Klemens Torggler and his amazing kinetic doors.

But a lot of us were left with questions: Can the door be opened from the other side? Do they take a long time to build? And where can I buy one?

We reached out to the artist for some answers.

"You just have to push it [to open the door from the other side] — that's all," Torggler wrote to Business Insider in an email. "Honestly, in the ideation phase, I was skeptical myself that the door could be opened properly from the other side. Building and testing the first prototype convinced me!"

Torggler is currently building the doors by hand in his studio in Austria according to customer specifications (some with specially designed locks) and shipping them internationally. He would not disclose the price since it can vary based on materials and how much time the doors take to build. But he said, "the price will be similar to other high-quality design products."

You can currently order your own through Torggler's own website, or see his unique designs on Artelier Contemporary gallery's website.

In the future, Torggler told Business Insider that he has plans to commercialize his doors instead of making one-off art pieces, which will hopefully speed up production and bring the doors to larger retailers around the world — something that would be particularly helpful given the overwhelming response to his creations.

The designer also hinted that he's working on a new project, which "will also be related to doors." Of course.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out the videos showing how Torggler's doors work:

Tencent Is Building A Stunning New 'Vertical Campus' In China

As companies like Google and Apple make plans for huge, sprawling campuses in Silicon Valley, Chinese Internet giant Tencent is looking forward to a new office building with an innovative approach to design.

The "vertical campus" that architectural firm NBBJ designed for the Shenzhen, China-based company involves two towers that will stand at heights of more than 800 feet, connected by three bridges spanning the street below. It will house the Internet portals 12,000+ employees.

"The Tencent building design essentially takes a campus model with its green spaces, quads, and amenities that are usually on the ground plane and flips them vertically," NBBJ said to Business Insider.  "Three interlinking bridges — sky streets — spread key social spaces across the organization."

The idea is that the inverse design will help break down office social hierarchies.

"By relating to the towers as a vertical campus, the central circulation breaks down the building hierarchy and therefore, any implied social hierarchy, aligning the headquarters with today’s flattening social and workplace structures," NBBJ said.

Each of the connecting bridges will have its own theme.

The theme of the top bridge is "knowledge," and, fittingly, it will be home to the company's libraries and conference rooms. The second, middle bridge will be themed "health" and will house basketball courts and a swimming pool.

Outdoor green space will top each of the bridges.

tencent building shenzhenInside, there will be a variety of spaces for employees to explore, with foosball tables and swings among some of the more fun perks offered.   tencent buildingConstruction has already begun on the site, and work is expected to be completed by 2016.

NBBJ has become a mainstay among large tech companies like Tencent in recent years. The architecture firm is also behind the glass-domed "biospheres" that will be Amazon's headquarters in Seattle, as well as the new 1.1 million-square-foot Googleplex in Silicon Valley.

When deciding on an office design, the firm analyzes how each company's employees interact with their workspace. That data-driven approach is something that's attractive to tech companies.

"A lot of our clients have cultures around data-driven decision-making," NBBJ managing director Scott Wyatt said to Wired. "They feel that if we’re going to make a statement of a preference or a direction, we need to prove it."

This Map Shows The 323 Restaurants That Have Been Successfully Funded By Kickstarter

The first restaurant to be funded successfully by a Kickstarter campaign was Homeroom, an Oakland, Calif.-based macaroni-and-cheese shop, in 2010.

Since then, more than 300 eateries have been launched with the help with the crowd-funding site.

"I really think of them as being the perfect project because they are, obviously, so community based, largely by physical location, but not always," Kickstarter CEO Yancey Strickler said to Eater. "They're great ways for communities to get together and to really have a closer relationship with a place that can be a pretty central hub to that neighborhood or town."

Kickstarter created this map of all of the restaurants, donut shops, pizzerias, and assorted eateries that have been funded through their site. You can find an interactive version of the map on their blog. kickstarter restaurant map

10 Essential Rules Of How To Dress For Work

$

This post originally appeared on Details.com.

The line between on-call and off-the-clock has never been blurrier. Not surprisingly, the same is true of what constitutes appropriate, good-looking office attire (whether your desk is at a museum or a hedge fund).

Consider suit separates (like the slate-gray silk pants and pale-blue two-button-jacket combo by Ermenegildo Zegna shown on the right) the new godsend, as they make buying off the rack easier than ever (though you'll still need a tailor, which is why we've included some of the best in the country who just happen to make desk-side calls).

Of course, on the following pages you'll see less-formal options, too—dark-wash denim, a bold, bright tie, and even a leather jacket should and can be incorporated into the daily and evening grind. How you dress for the job will always leave a lasting impression.

1. Dress up your denim with a pop of color

The key here is choosing a vivid shirt-and-tie combo in complementary shades and a blazer. Try an unstructured one in a can't-miss neutral.

2. Wear a suit without the tie

Get even more mileage out of a well-tailored suit. A fine-gauge crew neck knit sweater strikes the perfect note of refined yet relaxed.

Pattern suit Joseph Gordon Levitt

3. Mix and match patterns

Keeping these pieces in the same color family means that a subtle pattern on the jacket effortlessly introduces some visual texture.

4. Remaster the button down shirt

You should own a fail safe white shirt, but you can also pair a spread collar with a skinny knit tie makes it easy to do casual Friday right. Also, a soft linen blend in a light cream is both unexpected and elegant.

5. Upgrade your briefcase

Carry a sleek and streamlined case if you're a modern minimalist. Other classic options include a bag with structure cut from preposterously soft leather, and one just big enough to double as a weekender.

6. Broaden your footwear options

Yes, classic lace-ups are always office-appropriate. But so are other, less-conventional shoes, from leather slippers to suede boots. Look for shoes at Black Fleece by Brooks Brothers, Bruno Magli, Church's, John Lobb, Gucci, Grenson, Cole Haan, Tod's, Hermes and J. Crew.

7. Less fragrance is more

No one wants to be the guy whose enthusiasm for eau-de-whatever makes sharing an elevator with him unbearable. It's hardly unprofessional to hit the bottle — in fact, the right fragrance can get you noticed in a good way — but the secret is to find something understated.

Opt for a cologne with strong base notes (the woody, musky, earthy molecules that most easily bond with your skin), and use as you would REPLY ALL: judiciously.

Here are some good ones.

Bulgari Aqua Amara: With its blend of bitter mandarin and orange oils, this is the scent your girlfriend is most likely to steal. But those citrus aromas are balanced by patchouli essence (less Woodstock-y than woodsy), resulting in a strong finish.

Arquiste L'etrog: Perfumer Carlos Huber describes his creation (inspired by the Calabrian countryside) as "very herbal; a bit of pine needle, a bit of rosemary." Think Mediterranean fields that go on forever.

Dior Homme Eau For Men: Fresh and floral, Dior's classic for men gets an update in which the original's signature iris notes mingle with grapefruit and coriander to create a clean, just-out-of-the-shower vibe.

Malin + Goetz Dark Rum: This mix of plum, leather, and patchouli is a strong representative of the subset of fragrances with a boozy bouquet; after an initial hit of spice, it dries to a warm, sweet finish.

Ermenegildo Zegna Haitian Vetiver: Proof that simple doesn't have to mean basic: The star is high-quality vetiver, a lemony grass that's a common crop in Haiti; bitter hints of neroli and orris root add depth.

TAG Heuer watch Leonardo DiCaprio

8. Wear a low profile watch

Leave the Garmin for the gym. Classic and sleek, look for a leather-strap timepiece. They are the professional's ultimate accessory.

Shop brands like TAG Heuer, Montblanc, Patek Philippe, Vacheron ConstantinA. Lange & Söhne and Omega.

9. Travel with first-class gear

Luggage with extra padding: A handsome roller, perfect as a carry-on but big enough for a longer trip, is sleek and streamlined while still offering a padded compartment for your laptop.

Try the first foray into luggage by Montreal-based Want Les Essentiels de la Vie and a signature example of its point of view: traditional style, subtly subverted. The unexpected element is the rich chocolate-brown leather, a sophisticated alternative to the business traveler's standard-issue black nylon.

Comfy-chic sweats: Mastering the art of looking good on (and after) a red-eye flight means finding those elusive pieces that are elegant yet comfortable.

Thanks to two new labels, you can: Los Angeles–based LongJourney's relaxed black mesh drawstring pants get a luxurious upgrade by way of swatches of suede on the front (think elevated sweats).

And a just-boxy-enough white French-terry sweatshirt from Smith & Smith's debut collection will keep you warm when the air-conditioning is blasting from on high. Once you touch down, throw your topcoat or a classic trench over it and you won't look like you're wearing pajamas or, worse, yesterday's outfit.

Pre-flight Tiger Balm: Invented in the 1870s by a Chinese herbalist and perfected by his sons (one of whose name meant Gentle Tiger), Tiger Balm has long been a multitasking standby for headaches and sore muscles.

Our style director, Eugene Tong, swears by it; before takeoff, he puts some on his temples to ward off airsickness.

10. Hire the best help

Tailors, barbers, and bootblacks to put on speed dial. Most make desk-side calls, so you'll never have to blow a lunch hour again.

Chicago: Since 1990, Tailor's Touch has been a Gold Coast mainstay, altering suits (working buttonholes are a specialty) and jeans alike. Be sure to ask for head tailor Raymond Vasquez.

Born into a family of stylists, Miguel Betancourt picked up a pair of scissors at 13 and has found his niche offering on-call services for the guy with a demanding schedule, making himself available 24 hours a day.

Altman's Shoes for Men has been an institution for businessmen in the Loop in need of a quick shine.

Dallas: A former alterations manager at the Barneys New York Dallas outpost, Orland Morales counts boutiques like Alexander McQueen and hotels including The Joule as clients. He runs The Tailor Shop Dallas.

With three locations citywide, the Osgood-O'Neil salon empire is manned by 18 stylists (some of whom have prepped clients for Good Morning America and New York Fashion Week), which means you can usually get an appointment a day in advance.

In addition to shining or repairing your kicks, Deno's of Highland Park also works on small bags and belts.

Los Angeles: Taline Mazlemian's family has owned Paragon Cleaners for almost half a century; regulars include the Los Angeles Opera and the vintage boutique What Goes Around Comes Around.

The stylists at Hair Room Service by Michael Dueñas offer a full slate of treatments, including beard trims and light facials. They've even spiffed up celebs like Adrian Grenier and Aaron Paul. Bonus: They're on-call after hours.

Shoe Lab, a Beverly Hills spot, is known for its resoling skills on designer shoes.

New York City: Request a fitting with Wilfredo Rosario himself when you go to Wilfred's Tailoring. He learned the trade from his father and older brothers as a kid. He regularly makes alterations for Helmut Lang and Costume National and often leaves the shop to provide services for A-listers like Will Smith and Denzel Washington.

Marcos (Reggae to his friends) Smith has groomed models and cut hair for Usher, Jason Derulo, and top execs at Atlantic Records, but extends the VIP treatment to all his clients.

Leather Spa regularly takes on repairs for Gucci, Fendi, and some of the Big Apple's most demanding clientele.

Washington, D.C.: If you want the best, call Hamza Simrick, the man who wrote the book on tailoring, literally. Simrick is the author of The Art of Tailoring, and with stints on Savile Row and at Burberry under his belt, he knows how a suit should fit.

After 32 years in the business (with Armani, Valentino, and Milan Fashion Week on his résumé), Luigi Parasmo recently opened his eponymous salon in Georgetown, but Beltway insiders know the pro gives the finest in-office cuts in town.

Back when he was a senator, Joe Biden was a regular at Union Station Shoe Shine. If you don't have time to leave the building, avail yourself of its pickup and delivery service.

This Map Shows Which Coffee Chains Dominate America (SBUX)

The U.S. remains a country deeply divided ... by its coffee chains.

Flowing Data's Nathan Yau has the breakdown.

First, here's the overall shakeout. Starbucks dominates the entire country. But somehow the western U.S. has been deprived of the joys of Dunkin' Donuts. (BLENZ, Coffee Time, and, of course, Tim Hortons are Canadian brands.)

coffee circles opaque (1)

Next, here are the maps by chain. Aside from Starbucks, Seattle's Best also has an impressive showing nationwide. There's a minor Royal Mounted Canadian invasion in the north by Tim Hortons. We've never heard of Dutch Bros.

Finally, pizza chains vs. coffee joints. Sort of an elite vs. middle-America thing:

coffee usa

Yau writes:

I'm not totally sure why this is. I've only lived on the east and west coasts. Not so much anywhere else. Maybe fancy coffee drinks aren't as ubiquitous as I thought. Or maybe people get their coffee from mom-and-pop places. Or maybe people in these areas tend to drink coffee at home, and it's not profitable enough for these chains to open shop? Are these areas more into soda and tea? They why needs more investigation.

We would definitely be down to help, Nathan.

Lululemon Has Entered Completely New Territory With A New Clothing Line

Lululemon &Go

Lululemon has launched a brand new line of casual clothes for outside the yoga studio that includes sundresses, pants and tank tops.

The line, called "&Go," targets women who are "out the door at daybreak and moving until midnight," Lululemon says on its website.

"You don't have time for a wardrobe that keeps forcing you to change," an ad for the line says. "You're busy living. We get it."

&Go, which is being sold online and in stores, launched on Tuesday. Six of the 12 products that were part of the debut sold out in a matter of hours, according to Canaccord Genuity analyst Camilo Lyon.

The line's shorts are going for $54, tops for $58, dresses for $198 and pants cost between $108 and $118. Racked National first reported on &Go.

Lyon says the new line is proof that Lululemon "is still very much relevant and not fading," despite recent troubles.

"In our opinion, it is the most progressive, fashion-forward line the company has brought to market in quite some time," Lyon said in a note to clients on Tuesday. "We believe the strong reception to &Go could turn investor sentiment positive after months of deserved pessimism given the company's underperformance and mis-execution."

17 Tips For Saving Time In The Morning

$
0
0

getting up, morning, waking up

For many professionals, getting out the door in the mornings fed, dressed, and on time can seem like a constant battle.

A recent Today Show/AOL survey found that women spend an average of 55 minutes each morning on their appearance — or a total of 6.4 hours each week — while men spend a total of 4.5 hours a week getting ready.

How can you get out the door faster? Here are a few easy adjustments that will significantly shorten your morning routine:

The Night Before

1. Write the next day's to-do list.

By planning out the following day, you can go to sleep with less on your mind and wake up on the right track.

2. Pack your bag.

Don't spend the next morning scrambling to make sure you've got everything for work.

3. Make lunch.

Preparing lunch the night before for yourself or your kids frees up your time. It's also good for your wallet, since going out for lunch every day costs you about $1,000 each year.

4. Check the next day's forecast.

Knowing the weather will help you prepare your clothes, as well as plan your commute. For example, if there's going to be a snow or rain storm the next morning, you should probably get out the door sooner than usual.

5. Pick your outfit.

You can cut down a significant amount of preparing for the day if you wake up knowing what you're going to wear. (Don't save any ironing for the morning, either.)

6. Get to bed at the same time every night.

By getting into a strict sleep schedule, you'll wake up feeling more refreshed and focused. Studies have shown that "better sleep is better than more sleep."

7. Prepare your coffeemaker.

If you need a dose of caffeine in the morning, you're better off setting up the coffeemaker the night before and coordinating the brewing time with your alarm. A Keurig machine will save you even more time because it brews individual cups in under 30 seconds, and you can also set a time for it to turn on and warm up.

In The Morning

8. Lay off the "snooze" button.

Any time you hit snooze and drift off, you're restarting your brain's sleep cycle, which will make you feel even groggier when you finally roll out of bed. If you consistently wake up tired, you may need to go to bed earlier.

9. Do some quick stretches.

If you don't have time for a full-blown exercise routine, it's worth setting aside a moment for some easy stretches. You'll get your heart pumping faster and get the excess fluid out of your joints, ridding you of some lethargy.

10. Let the sun in.

When light hits your eye in the morning, it taps into your brain's circadian rhythm and helps you wake up. Research suggests that the sun's orange light and the sky's blue light have a greater impact than the light bulbs in your ceiling.

11. Drink a cold glass of water.

A glass of water first thing in the morning will give your metabolism a boost— and thus your energy level — without affecting your digestion. Some dietitians believe the energy used to process cold water enhances this effect.

12. Play some music.

Not only can music improve your mood and energy level, but it can also serve as a way to track how much time has passed, especially if you use a playlist you made for the morning.

13. Ignore your phone, computer, and TV.

If you're trying to save time, don't get caught up in emails, texts, or a TV show.

14. Set a strict time to leave the house.

Determine a time to leave your home that has proven to get you to work early. Set an alarm if you have to.

15. Cut your personal-care products down to the essentials.

Women, for example, can save time by using beauty products that multitask, like stick foundations that act as both concealer and foundation.

16. Have a fast, nutritious breakfast available.

If you want optimal energy, then you need to eat breakfast. Foods like Greek yogurt, granola, and fruit are quick and nutritious, and you can take them along for your commute if you're running late.

17. Have set locations for things like your keys, bag, and coat.

There's no need to spend 10 minutes hunting down your keys. Adding some order to your life will free you up each morning.

HOUSE OF THE DAY: Drop Nearly $1 Million On This Insane Hamptons Summer Rental

Ox Pasture Road 1

The Hamptons summer season stretches just 14 weeks from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but renters can spend some serious dough in that brief period.

While many Hamptons rentals cost six figures or more for a summer, some take it to another level.

This home, a 12-bedroom Southampton estate on 10 acres with an indoor pool and grass tennis court, is one example.

It was initially listed for $1.3 million for Memorial Day to Labor Day, making it the priciest rental out east. But even with a price cut to $950,000, it's still one of the most expensive Hamptons houses still available. Michaela Keszler at Douglas Elliman is handling the rental.

This $950/summer rental sits on 10 acres in Southampton Village, the oldest English settlement in the state of New York.

The house has 18,000 square feet of space.

It was originally built in 1915, but recently underwent extensive interior renovations.

Two Friends Quit Their New York Jobs To Spend Seven Months Backpacking Across Asia

Laos.4000Islands2

Last September, two college friends did something a lot of people dream about, but few actually do. They quit their New York City jobs to travel for more than half a year.

Over the course of their journey, Jennifer Diamond and Hilary Walke, both 26, made friends from around the world, hiked volcanoes, saw gorgeous scenery, and created unforgettable memories. In total, they visited 12 different countries in Asia.

They were just catching up on each other’s lives when the idea for the trip came up on the phone one night.

Click here to jump right to their photos >>

“At first it was casual and somewhat hypothetical,” Walke told Business Insider. “We had been following The Lost Girls, three girls who were living in New York City and quit their jobs to travel the world for a year. We always felt our 10-day trips were cut short.”

Then it clicked. They booked two one-way tickets to Tokyo without a second thought.

"In terms of the itinerary, we looked at a map and checked off the countries we wanted to travel through. That was it," Hilary told Business Insider. "You can't plan 7 months of travel in advance, which is something that excited us."

Both had saved money by living at home after they graduated. During the six months before they left, they saved a bit more and settled on a budget of $20,000 for the year.

At the end of the trip, there was hardly any of the Asian continent they couldn't say they had seen: First they went to Tokyo, then Korea, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, Bali and Indonesia, and finally, the Philippines.

Staying healthy was their biggest challenge. One night Jen got an especially bad case of food poisoning.

"With my friend totally out of commission, I had to carry two 35-pound backpacks,” Hilary said. “I was trying to communicate with people who couldn't understand me or where my guest house was.”

Most of the trip, though, was serene. Hilary’s favorite destination was the Indonesian island of Gili Trawangan.

"We were sitting in our beach bungalow with our local friends, playing cards, guitar, singing, laughing, unaware and unconcerned about where on the island our shoes were," Hilary said. "We were definitely wishing we could live in that moment forever."

Now they're back where they started  at least physically.

"Jen's an accountant and I'm writing, just like before," Hilary said. "But the trip changed who we are."

Hilary shared the trip photos with Business Insider. We've put them together in the following slideshow, along with her original captions.

Have an amazing travel story and photos to share? Send an email to thelife@businessinsider.com and we could feature your adventure next.

Our first stop in Tokyo. This was Japanese efficiency at its best — skip the waiters, go right to the ramen vending machine to place your order.

Tokyo arcades are as common as Chase Banks are in New York City. Kids and businessmen alike blow off steam at these overly stimulating technology playgrounds. Eye enlarging is an automatic Photobooth enhancement, but we didn't realize it until we had stared at the photo for a few minutes.

PHOTOS: An Airbnb Guest Held A Huge Party In This New York Penthouse And Trashed It

Airbnb NY Condo 03

Rachel Bassini had a horror story experience with Airbnb last month.

She rented her penthouse in New York's East Village to a man she thought was traveling with his family, but returned home to find that it had been used for a wild party and the place was completely trashed.

There was human feces, used condoms and other disgusting things all over her bathroom and furniture.

(Skip straight to the photos.)

And then, Airbnb gave her some confusing information when she asked about being covered by Airbnb's Host Guarantee.

Airbnb advertises that it will cover hosts for property damage up to a $1 million, via a program called the Host Guarantee. But when Bassini contacted Airbnb about it after the incident, a representative discouraged her from filing a claim, telling her she wouldn't be covered, she says.

The good news is that, after being contacted by Business Insider, the company did the right thing by her, and promised to cover the damages if Bassini sends in the necessary paperwork.

Airbnb sent us this statement:

Airbnb is built on a foundation of trust and respect and this conduct is unacceptable. We permanently banned the person who rented this space from using our site shortly after this incident occurred. Over 11 million guests have spent the night on Airbnb and problems don’t happen often, but when they do, we work hard to address them. We encourage hosts to submit documentation as quickly as possible so we can expedite our review, but we should have moved faster to ensure this case was properly evaluated. We’re working to reimburse the host for costs associated with this incident.

Here's what happened:

A guy named "Jeffrey" booked her condo through Airbnb for Feb. 15. Bassini had rented her condo out a few other times when she traveled via Airbnb and had good experiences.

Jeffrey had no reviews on Airbnb "but his profile was of him and his wife and young daughter — seemingly harmless," Bassini said. "Upon my return, I found feces covering the bathroom and couch, used condoms all over the bedroom, and chewed gum on the floors, walls, and couches, among other horrendous things."

Then she discovered Instagram pictures and videos showing a massive party in her house, wall-to-wall people and booze.

Jeffrey also failed to return her keys, she says, including special elevator security keys to her building and penthouse. She calculated she was out about $2,000.

Bassini called Airbnb on the phone Feb. 18 and was told the damages she experienced were not covered, she says.

"I had been informed by a customer service agent on the phone that the Host Guarantee only covered structural damage, not contents," she said. But that's not true. Airbnb does cover these kinds of damages, it tells Business Insider.

She then made a mistake of her own. She never filled out a claim.

"They told me, I think twice, to fill it out and I didn't do so because I had been told I wouldn't be covered," she explains.

Thinking Airbnb wouldn't reimburse her, she reached out to the guest directly, Jeffery, trying to get him to pay for the damages and return the keys. When messages to him via Airbnb began to bounce back, she contacted Airbnb again and was told that Jeffrey's account was suspended, pending an investigation.

She asked again about the host guarantee and was told this time that she wasn't covered because she failed to fill out the claim within 72 hours of the incident.

Airbnb then credited her $100 and told her, "Unfortunately this case has been closed and no further payouts will be possible."

After Business Insider began inquiring about Bassini's situation, Airbnb reversed that decision, reopened her case and promised to cover damages if she submits the proper paperwork, including the cost of the keys.

Also, to its credit, the company apologized in writing, sending Bassini an email:

"I am very sorry for the initial confusion with respect to whether these damages were covered under the Host Guarantee. The founding principle on which that program was founded is grounded in the belief that hosts should have peace of mind when booking with Airbnb."

Business Insider talked to "Jeffrey," who doesn't deny the party or the mess. He says he was contacted by Bassini and agreed to pay the cleaning bill.

He told us: "We had discussed that and she said she was going to hire cleaning services. I sent her an email asking her how does she want the payment to be sent for the cleaning services." He says once he hears from Bassini about the bill, he expects to remit payment and "be done with it."

This is a photo of how Bassini's New York penthouse usually looks.

Here's a view of the kitchen.

Here's the living room. Note the white couches.
