HOUSE OF THE DAY: Live Next Door To Tim Cook In Palo Alto For Under $3 Million

Maris HOTD

Bill Maris, managing partner of Google Ventures, has listed his Palo Alto home for $2.85 million.

According to Realtor.com, the home has four bedrooms and a beautifully modern design, but the most interesting part of it may be who happens to live next door.

Maris' home actually shares a small piece of land with a similarly designed house belonging to Apple CEO Tim Cook. Cook reportedly bought the modest 2,095-square-foot condo for $1.9 million back in 2010, around the same time Maris moved in.

The decision to keep the rival close by is interesting, especially considering that other tech executives like Marissa Mayer and Mark Zuckerberg have been known to buy surrounding properties just to keep other people away.

Maris reportedly moved to Mountain View in 2012, meaning that the opportunity to be Tim Cook's neighbor is yours for the taking.

The house is listed with Zane MacGregor & Co.

The 2,065-square-foot home is situated at the end of an ultra-private driveway, to the rear of Cook's home.

Enter through this glass-paned front door.

The entryway is decorated with some pretty interesting modern art.

The Wall Streeter's Guide To Not Completely Ruining Valentine's Day ... Again

$

Jennifer Garner, Valentine's day pinata

It isn't that bankers are particularly insensitive people. It's just that they're very busy — and the way they see it, it's only Valentine's Day obviously, so their date will get over it, right?

Wrong.

Even if screwing up Valentine's Day doesn't end with tears and regret, it makes a big check mark on the "reasons-why-I'm-so-over this-relationship" tally.

To avoid this, Business Insider reached out to veteran Wall Streeters to get a sense of what they've done horribly, horribly wrong on Valentine's Day and how they've tried to rectify it.

Pro tip: You can't recover from having your assistant ask your date out for you.

When the bankers ran out of ideas (it was quick), we turned to our friends at InsideHook, a men's lifestyle newsletter for gentlemen of a certain caliber — the caliber that does not ruin Valentine's Day. In fact, the Inside Hook man ends up in the Valentine's Day Hall of Fame.

You want to get into the Hall of Fame.

Make it clear you're setting the agenda — because if you don't plan it, your date will dream it.

Make sure that your Valentine knows that you will be planning the day a few weeks ahead of time.

You don't actually have to do the planning then, but at least then you'll be in control.

And you want to be in control so your date doesn't get any fancy ideas they want to throw out there. For example, one banker was dumped soon after his girlfriend was shocked that he did not fly her to her family's vacation home in Stowe.

It was her idea.

First things first: Experiences trump things.

Taking your date out for an awesome outing will trump presents any day. Things get lost, get old, get eaten — experiences are memories that last forever (if they're any good).

InsideHook has a solid Valentine's Day guide complete with some ideas to get you started. Business Insider can attest that the NYC guide is very handy, and even if you're not in any of the cities Inside Hook covers — New York City, San Francisco, Chicago, or Los Angeles — at least you'll know that Valentino makes a killer leather clutch.

"Don't take a vegetarian to a steakhouse."

You want your date to enjoy the evening, yes? Then know their taste.

This requires attention to detail, a skill many Wall Streeters have in their professional lives, but not always their personal lives.

Notice your date doesn't order desert? Well then your date probably won't like the box of Godiva you picked up.

Never seen your date wear a pair of earrings? Well then you date's ears probably aren't pierced.

Pay attention.

4 Moves You Need To Master Before You Hit The Gym

$

exercise, push up, health, fitness, crossfit

details logoThis post originally appeared on Details.com.

It's amazing what too much time sitting at a desk or on a couch can do. And by amazing, we mean horrible: Weak glutes, poor posture, a powerless core, and tight hips and hamstrings are just some of the consequences. "You bring those imbalances and weaknesses into the gym and start doing even the most basic movements incorrectly as a result," says Florian Roth, a Tier 3 trainer and performance coach at Equinox Soho.

Add resistance into the mix, and while you may think you're getting stronger, you're actually putting yourself at risk of injury, he says. "You must first master the following four movements, using proper form, and then allow them to serve as the building blocks from which you can safely advance your training."

1. The Movement: Pull

Do: Keep your shoulders down, your chest out, and your chin up. "Most people, especially those who work in an office all day, tend to have a weakened posterior chain, which causes your shoulders to roll forward," says Roth. "Properly executed pull exercises (rows, flyes, etc.) work to counteract this effect by strengthening your back. For this reason, you should routinely perform three pull moves for every one push exercise you do."

Don't: Let your shoulders be in a constant shrugged-up position. The movement should come from your back—not your traps, says Roth. Otherwise, you'll develop a huge neck.

2. The Movement: Push

Do: "Apply everything you learned in the pull to the push movement," says Roth. Again, keep your shoulders back and down, your chest out, and chin up. Start by doing some push-up variations that will engage your entire body, really strengthen your core, and do not involve any added resistance.

Don't: Work on your push movement until you master your pull. "Any form issues or imbalances that you notice with the pull are going to be present in the push as well, and it's harder on your back so you need to build up some strength before you jump right in," says Roth.

3. The Movement: Squat

Do: "Roll a toddler a ball and watch him pick it up—that's how you should squat," says Roth. How low you go is individually specific, but you bend straight down from the knees, keeping your upper body tall, core engaged, shoulders back and chest up, moving in one fluid motion, and then use your glutes to stand back up.

Don't: Push through any kind of knee pain. "It's usually an indicator that you're doing something wrong, so as soon as you feel anything bad, stop," he says.

4. The Movement: Deadlift

Do: Hinge from your hips, with your shoulders down, core engaged, and spine long and neutral, says Roth.

Don't: Bend forward from your knees or allow your core and shoulders to collapse inward. Steer clear of adding big weights on until you can look in the mirror and see that you're following good form first.

Ugg Sent Philip Seymour Hoffman's Celebrity Friends Boots In Hopes They'd Be Worn To His Funeral

The private funeral services for Philip Seymour Hoffman were held at Manhattan's Church of StIgnatius Loyola this morning, and public relations departments were quick to pounce on an opportunity.

According to a report in The New York Post, PR teams for various fashion labels are tastelessly sending out photos of stars wearing their brands while paying their respects to the legendary actor.

The Post writes:

Valentino emailed fashion bloggers and journalists on Friday morning photos of Hoffman’s “The Master” co-star Amy Adams wearing their Garavani Rockstud Duble bag on her way to the memorial service.

“We are pleased to announce Amy Adams carrying the Valentino Garavani Rockstud Duble bag from the Spring/Summer 2014 collection on February 6th in New York,” is the release Pavelski is referring to.

Other companies, like Ugg, sent Hoffman's celebrity friends gift bags filled with Ugg products, including boots.

Ugg also included a message encouraging them to wear their winter boots in the cold city weather, according to Ugg Australia associates.

When the Post reached out to Ugg; another PR spin: “UGG does not know nor would we presume to ask what our consumers or fans are doing in New York, or for what event or purpose they need the product. That is none of our business. UGG does not request photo opps from those to whom we gift product.”

You can read the Post story, and see some of the photos of Amy Adams here.

How Miranda Kerr Went From Teen Model To The Face Of H&M

Miranda Kerr

Miranda Kerr just replaced Gisele Bündchen as the face of H&M.

The huge contract comes after a year full of controversy for Kerr, who departed after rumors she was difficult to work with.

It's possible that Kerr, 30, simply became too hot for Victoria's Secret. The brand goes out of its way to hire models whom its customers can relate to, and the stunning Kerr might not have fit the bill.

In short, Kerr was so hot that female customers felt threatened by her.

H&M is obviously happy to work with Kerr, who was the highest-paid model behind Bündchen last year, according to Forbes.

Miranda Kerr has been modeling since she was 13, appearing in television advertisements. Her most prolific campaign before Victoria's Secret was for Maybelline Cosmetics.

In 2007, she signed a contract with Victoria's Secret to replace Gisele Bundchen as an Angel.

She also began dating her first husband, actor Orlando Bloom. The two, who are now going through a divorce, have a child, Flynn, together.

The 25 Most Romantic Cities In America

Las CanariasCities from Texas to the East Coast got a lot of love in the survey of most romantic cities in America, conducted by restaurant reservation site OpenTable.

"These are the cities where  people are really seeking a date night," OpenTable’s chief dining officer Caroline Potter told Business Insider. "Places with nesters and families were often thought of as romantic. Brooklyn is more of a date night town than Manhattan, which didn't make the list this year because it's more about singles mixing."

OpenTable calculated a city's romance level by ranking the percentage of restaurants in the area rated as "romantic," according to OpenTable diner reviews, the percentage of tables seated for two, and the percentage of people who dined out on Valentine's Day last year.

Regardless of location, Potter said she noticed romance is alive and well in the dining industry, which routinely sees increased traffic on Valentine's Day.

"People are still seeking to celebrate their love over meals," she said.

Richard Branson Rode The 'Vomit Comet' To Prepare For His Trip To Space [PHOTOS]

Richard Branson is getting ready to visit suborbital space later this year on the first commercial flight of Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo.

To prepare, Branson took a trip on the ZERO-G Experience, better known as the "Vomit Comet." The specially modified Boeing 727 flies up to 34,000 feet then plunges down at a 30-degree angle, eliminating gravity in the cabin. (For $4,950, you get a dozen cycles.)

Branson booked a vomit comet ride for himself, his son Sam, and his daughter-in-law Bellie, who will be on the first commercial flight with him. Peter Diamandis, owner of the ZERO-G plane and founder of the XPRIZE competition, came along as well.

On his blog, Branson wrote: "As you get more confident, you can do loops, float around and have the kind of fun that causes the priceless looks on our faces in the photos!"

From the photos, it looks like Branson and company were doing more goofing off than serious training, but maybe that's the better way to sell tickets for space tourism.

There's A $43,000 Fee For Planes That Show Up Late To The Sochi Airport

$

sochi olympics plane landing

The Winter Olympics have begun in Sochi, and the city's small airport is preparing for an influx air traffic by taking a few unusual steps.

One of those is a remarkably large penalty for jets that show up to the airport half an hour late. A Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) posted on the FAA's website says that during the Olympic and Paralympic Games:

DUE TO INCREASED INTST OF FLT FOR THE PERIOD OF OLYMPIC GAMES THE PENAL SANCTIONS WILL BE IMPOSED FOR BUSINESS AVIATION ACFT AT SOCHI AP AT THE RATE OF 1500000 ROUBLES (WO VALUE-ADDED TAX) WHEN VIOLATING THE SLOT FOR MORE THAN 30 MIN.

150,000 roubles comes out to a whopping $43,137. The penalty doesn't apply if the plane is late due to weather or technical reasons.

Brad Stewart, CEO of private jet charter company XOJET, which is not running flights to the Games, told Business Insider that while the penalty is extreme, it's not shocking. Airport officials are "probably trying to do aggressive slot control," he explained.

Because traffic will be so heavy, flights that don't arrive when they're supposed to can mess up carefully coordinated plans. They're "trying to create a major deterrent," Stewart said.

In addition to the late fee, jets won't be allowed to park at the airport for more than two hours, a policy that will help save space.

Eric Ammon, SVP of sales and services at Paramount Business Jets, another charter company, said he booked a flight for a client from Istanbul to Sochi. But because the plane can't park at the airport, it has to land there twice — and pay the landing fees twice. The round trip will cost its passengers $17,000.

This Awesome Map Helps You Find The US Cities With The Best Weather

$

Bad weather have you bummed? Kelly Norton, a designer and software engineer living in Atlanta, Ga., has created an interactive map that makes it possible to find U.S. cities with the most "pleasant" days in a year.

We first saw Norton's map posted at The Atlantic Cities by John Metcalfe.

Pleasant means different things to different people, but Norton defines it as place were the mean temperature is between 55 degrees and 75 degrees Fahrenheit. The maximum daily temperature doesn't go above 85 degrees or dip below 45 degrees. Norton also considered precipitation. Days with greater than .010 inches of precipitation or greater than .1 inches of snow were not viewed as pleasant, Norton told Business Insider through email.

Norton used 23 years of data collected by NOAA weather stations around the country to create the map shown below. The darker the circles, the greater number of pleasant days.

"I constructed the map by breaking the country up into a grid and then looking at the weather stations that fall within each of [the] squares in the grid," Norton said. "I use a zip code database to determine which zip codes fall within each region. I name each region by its most populous city." Los Angeles has two circles because it's large enough to be the most populous city in two regions.

To find out exactly how many "pleasant" days a city has, just type in the zip code and it will return a chart that tells you the total number of pleasant days as well as a month-by-month breakdown. For instance, New York City has, on average, 67 pleasant days each year. Most of those nice days occur in September.

weather2

For anyone who's planning their winter escape, here's a quick list of the U.S. cities with the best and worst weather:

The 5 most pleasant places:

Los Angeles — 183 days/year

San Diego— 182 days/year

Oxnard — 166 days/year

Simi Valley — 156 days/year

San Francisco — 153 days/year

The 5 least pleasant places:

McAllister, Montana — 14 days/year

Northeast of Reno, Nevada — 15 days/year

Clancy, Montana — 15 days/year

Douglas, Wyoming —15 days/year

East of Cedarville, California — 16 days/year

The New Corvette Stingray Is The Most Fun Car I've Ever Driven

2014 Chevrolet Corvette yellow

Last month, I finally booked myself a weekend behind the wheel of the the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, fully loaded with Z51 performance package and painted a dazzling bright yellow.

With a base price of $53,800 (including the Z51) and loaded up with just about every feature available, my ride came with a $71,960 sticker.

I had planned several non-driving activities for that weekend, which I regretted as soon as I climbed into the Stingray (this requires the same muscles you use to get into a crawl space).

Simply put, I've never had more fun in a car. The Stingray is hugely powerful. Frills are limited, everything is designed to keep you focused on the road. And people absolutely love it. Even in January, I kept the window down, because so many people caught me at red lights and wanted to talk/shout nice things at me.

Their collective spirit is summarized by the first guy who spoke to me: "Dude, your Corvette is sick, bro."

First, let's just take it in. Gorgeous. The color, by the way, is "velocity yellow." I heard the working title was "look at this thing!" yellow.

The car's interior is simple, and focused on the driver. I felt like a fighter pilot sitting in this thing.

Partly, that's because of the head-up display — it gives you speed and RPM, right in front of your eyes. I think every car should have one of these.

Valentine's Day gifts for Men 4x3

Valentine's Day is fast approaching, which means that men in relationships should have probably started to think about gifts by now.

But men deserve gifts that show how much they're loved just as much as women do.

So we asked our coworkers, fathers, and friends what they would want most for Valentine's Day.

And though a lot of the suggestions were extremely practical, that doesn't mean they're not romantic. Just knowing what your guy likes or needs will let him know how much you care.

Reference his favorite movie by bringing the Force to breakfast.

Take pancakes to a new level with Williams-Sonoma's "Star Wars" Heroes & Villains Pancake Molds. The set includes three non-stick steel molds in Yoda, Darth Vader, and Stormtrooper shapes.

Place your character-of-choice on a preheated griddle and pour in your batter; once the first side has set, remove the molds and flip the pancakes. There's even a separate vehicle set with the Millennium Falcon and an X-Wing Fighter.

Buy it: $8 at Williams-Sonoma

Make an investment for future date nights at home with a Netflix account.

Date nights at home will get a whole lot more fun for both of you if you get a Netflix account for your Valentine. All the movies and TV shows at your fingertips will also be a nice gift for anyone who travels regularly or is a TV addict.

Plus, one of our tech editors was quick to point out that season two of "House of Cards" premieres on Valentine's Day. Even better.

Buy it: $7.99/a month

For the early riser, make sure his coffee never goes cold again.

Sure it's practical, but one of our reporters said the Thermos his girlfriend bought him was one of the best gifts he's received in years.

This highly recommended stainless steel Thermos has a double-wall vacuum insulation so it can keep hot or cold beverages at a steady temperature for up to 24 hours. No more tepid coffee.

Buy it: $25 at Target

Huge areas of Japan, including the capital city of Tokyo, were hit by a rare heavy snowstorm on Saturday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued the first heavy snow warning for Tokyo in 13 years, the AFP reports.

Hundreds of flights have been canceled and thousands are without power due to the severe weather.

The Associated Press reports that the storm had already dumped about 4 inches of snow on the city by Saturday afternoon and a total of 8 inches is expected by Sunday morning. Tokyo averages around 4.3 inches of snow each year, according to Weather.com meteorologist Nick Wiltgen

26 Vintage Photos That Show How New York Has Transformed Since The 1970s

Vintage NYC

The Museum of the City of New York has published a collection of photos from Edmund V. Gillon that capture street scenes in New York in the 1970s and 1980s.

Gillon has published more than a dozen books on New York City, the museum notes.

Some of the city's landscape looks the same today as it did back then, but some areas look drastically different.

Today's downtown skyline is missing the Twin Towers, and Times Square has transformed dramatically since the '70s with the addition of many more lit-up billboards and signs.
