This Heat Map Reveals The Secret To IKEA's Store Design

0

In our recent tour of IKEA's store in Brooklyn, we kept thinking back to a 2011 lecture from Alan Penn of the UCL Bartlett School of Architecture.

Penn and his assistants analyzed IKEA's layout by following customers through one of the enormous stores. He was surprised to find an extremely uniform and efficient customer flow.

"If you shop in IKEA, all you do is follow people around the store," Penn said. "You very seldom find people going the other direction."

In fact, Penn realized, there was something very clever going on here, ultimately leading to higher sales. As he concluded in his lecture slides:

  • IKEA is highly disorienting and yet there is only one route to follow
  • Your time allocation is used in the showroom
  • By the time you get to the marketplace you feel licensed to impulse purchase
  • Unintelligibility removes autonomy
  • Submission is the first part of a two part contract
  • Delay is followed by gratification

In short, the overwhelming shopping experience is all part of the plan.

Here's the IKEA customer heatmap from Penn's presentation:

'Tiger Mom': Data Prove That The Longer You're In America, The Worse You Perform

0
0

amy chua

It's the No. 1 story on NYTimes.com today.

But in case you missed it, Yale Law professor Amy Chua, better known as "The Tiger Mom," along with her husband, are out with an essay summarizing the views of their latest work, "The Triple Package: How Three Unlikely Traits Explain the Rise and Fall of Cultural Groups in America."

The main thesis of their book is likely to elicit some groans: The most successful cultural groups in America, they write, tend to possess three qualities: an attitude of superiority, a concurrent sense of insecurity, and impulse control. Some groups got 'em, others don't, they argue.

But there was another, more plausible assertion that jumped out to us: Being in America a long time seems to correlate with declining performance.

They write:

"Most fundamentally, groups rise and fall over time. The fortunes of WASP elites have been declining for decades. In 1960, second-generation Greek-Americans reportedly had the second-highest income of any census-tracked group.

"Group success in America often tends to dissipate after two generations. Thus while Asian-American kids overall had SAT scores 143 points above average in 2012 — including a 63-point edge over whites — a 2005 study of over 20,000 adolescents found that third-generation Asian-American students performed no better academically than white students."

This stat shows success in America is not about blood:

"The fact that groups rise and fall this way punctures the whole idea of “model minorities” or that groups succeed because of innate, biological differences. Rather, there are cultural forces at work."

This sort of helps clarify the view we got from the book via The New York Post's recent preview: that Chua and her husband believe specific cultural groups are inherently better than others.

But still, Chua and her husband hedge. Any individual, they say, is capable of defying their group's broader performance and develop the "triple package" of successful qualities:

The way to develop this package of qualities — not that it’s easy, or that everyone would want to — is through grit. It requires turning the ability to work hard, to persevere and to overcome adversity into a source of personal superiority. This kind of superiority complex isn’t ethnically or religiously exclusive. It’s the pride a person takes in his own strength of will.

Indeed, New York Magazine's Lisa Miller calls the work a "triumph of caution." "One can almost hear the arguments in the Chua-Rubenfeld household after the publication of Tiger Mother,"  she writes.

We're not sure if that will make for compelling reading. But these kinds of "secret recipe for success books" always blow out best-seller lists. "The Battle Hymn Of The Tiger Mother," Chua's first salvo on parenting, remains near the top 5,000 best-selling books on Amazon. So this new work will probably get gobbled up anyway.

The Real Reason Kale Chips Cost So Much

Jordan Belfort's Former Head Of Security: He's Still A 'Scumbag'

0
0

jordan belfortThe debate continues. Is Jordan Belfort — the 'Wolf of Wall Street' now immortalized in film — a reformed man out with a message, or is he a degenerate happily cashing in on his past misdeeds?

Policy Mic's Vivian Giang has one take from Belfort's former head of security, detective Bo Dietl of Bo Dietl & Associates.

Dietl installed Belfort's home security, and was vigilant over the convicted fraudster's affairs during his darkest days — the days when Belfort was running scams and making millions in a drugged out haze during the 1990s.

Dietl even played himself in 'The Wolf Of Wall Street' movie.

So what's Dietl's take on his former client?

Dietl thinks Belfort's remorse is "bulls**t", and that he's just trying to cash in with two books, a movie and a potential reality show. Meanwhile, Dietl points out that Belfort has only paid  $243,000 in restitution since 2007 and still owes $110.4 million to his victims.

From Policy Mic:

"Just think about your life, having the greatest actors playing you ... having the Martin Scorsese directing it ... having a $100 million budget... He's like Robinhood now and he stole $200 million from grandma and grandpa .... he's a scumbag," Dietl said an interview at his office.

Dietl goes on to say that the movie also glazed over a really important part of Belfort's life while he was running his firm, Stratton Oakmont — his relationship with the mob.

Dietl was hired to make sure that Stratton Oakmont wasn't destroyed by these connections — kind of like the bar Tommy and Henry burned down in 'Goodfellas.'

"He.. had the gangsters lurking...," Dietl told Policy Mic, "the wise guys from organized crimes ... he was making a lot of money," Dietl said. "When [these guys] see a lot of money ... well, you need some protection. [The gangsters] want to weasel their way in so [Belfort] called me up to weasel them out."

Bloomberg Businessweek wrote about this in an article about the mob's relationship with Wall Street back in 1997:

The Mob has also allegedly found its way into short-selling of chop stocks. According to traders and chop-house officials, Barry Gesser, a close friend of Stratton founder Jordan Belfort, has systematically shorted chop stocks. He has allegedly demanded cash from chop houses in return for not shorting the stocks, or has demanded cheap stock to cover his shorts, threatening to ''crush'' the stocks if he doesn't get his way.

We wonder how that didn't make it into the movie...

You Can Now Drive From Los Angeles To New York On Tesla's Supercharger Network

tesla model s supercharger station 2

Tesla Model S drivers can now make it from Los Angeles to New York recharging the electric car only at the company's supercharger stations, CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter.

To mark the occasion, two teams will race to set a cross-country speed record in an electric vehicle, Musk continued.

Superchargers allow Tesla owners to charge their cars quickly and for free, for life. The network is a big part of Tesla's efforts to convince drivers that range anxiety — the fear of running out of power on the road — shouldn't stop them from going electric.

There are currently 71 stations in North America and 14 in Europe. Tesla says that covers about 80% of the U.S. population.

Musk also confirmed he will set off on the cross-country trip he first announced in May, accompanied by his five young sons:

Here's the current state of the Supercharger network in the U.S.:

Musk Tweeted that the two teams will depart Los Angeles on Friday and should arrive in New York on Sunday.

According to EV charging network PlugShare, one duo racing cross-country is John and Jill:

Last week, Tesla announced its European customers can now move between the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, and Austria using only Supercharger stations to fill up their batteries.

North Korea's First Ski Resort Is Open For Business

0

North Korea's infamous leader Kim Jong Un recently unveiled his latest project: The Masik Pass Ski Resort.

The recently opened luxury resort took 10 months to build, a quick turnaround, according to The Irish Independent. It features nine ski runs, with the longest reaching over three miles, which are serviced by Chinese-made lifts (the Europeans reportedly refused to sell their lifts to the communist country). The slopes can accommodate 5,000 visitors a day, but so far only a couple hundred have checked them out.

See the slopes for yourself in the video below produced by Koryo Tours, a British-run, Beijing-based operation that specializes in trips to North Korea.

In a country that struggles to feed its people, some suggest that Kim Jong Un wanted to construct a ski resort that made North Korea look just as capable of hosting the Winter Olympics as South Korea, which will host the 2018 Games.

If There Are No Gays In Sochi, Then Who Goes To The Gay Cabaret Club?

0
0

This weekend, Anatoly Pakhomov, the Mayor of Olympic Host City Sochi, told reporters that there were no gays in his city. Asked if gay people should hide their sexuality in the city, Pakhomov told the BBC's Panorama program, "No, we just say that it is your business, it's your life. But it's not accepted here in the Caucasus where we live. We do not have them in our city."

Pressed on the issue of gays in Sochi, Pakhomov said that, "I am not sure, but I don't bloody know them."

You have to wonder, however, if there are no gays in Sochi, then who is going to the gay bars? As opposition leader Boris Nemtsov told the BBC, there are a number of gay bars and clubs in the city.

For example, there's Club Mayak, a cabaret venue which openly features drag queens and describes itself as "gay friendly" on its website (girls are allowed in the club, but they pay 200 rubles more than the boys). They've even put together this wonderful flyer to promote themselves during the event:

Sochi Gay Club

Put simply, Pakhomov's comments are wrong — according to the Daily Beast, up to 400 people can be found at the club every night. There are gay people in Sochi, just like there are in any large group of people anywhere in the world.

But Pakhomov's comments are illuminating. Let's consider why he was even asked about gays in the first place — Russia's "non-traditional sexual relations propaganda" laws, which came into being last year and have been a constant source of controversy ever since. Critics say that the laws, which don't mention homosexuality directly, essentially prohibited teaching kids about homosexuality, gay pride marches, and speaking in defense of gay rights.

It's worth remembering that Russia doesn't have the worst anti-gay laws in the world (not by a long way, in fact). If you go to Moscow or St. Petersburg you will find many packed gay clubs and plenty of relaxed attitudes to sexuality. Pakhomov and the Duma deputies who voted in the "non-traditional sexual relations propaganda" haven't tried to make homosexuality illegal in Russia, but they seem to believe they can will it out of existence. That's just plain dumb.

Here Are The $25,000 Headphones Every Player Will Receive For Playing In The Super Bowl

Graff Diamonds and Beats By Dre have partnered to create diamond encrusted headphones for every player in the Super Bowl according to Darren Rovell of ESPN.

Michael Bowie of the Seattle Seahawks tweeted a picture of his headphones, saying they are valued at $25,000. That is a significant gift, especially for players that will only play one or two years in the NFL at the minimum salary of $405,000.

If we assume only players on the active 53-man rosters will receive headphones, the entire lot would be valued at $2.65 million.

Air Force Veteran Shares His Tips For Efficient Packing And Traveling

0
0

photo

With their reputation for adaptability and traveling at a moment's notice, it's no surprise that a military veteran had an outstanding answer to the "What Are the Best Travel Hacks?” question on Quora.

Thomas Snerdley, an airman who served in Iraq and a former military brat, has traveled around the world more than a few times and in the process developed a system for traveling light and efficiently.

Here’s his advice from Quora, republished with permission here:

1. The Two Bag System.  Every pro traveler I've ever met travels light using some variation of this system.

bolinas

Bag#1: Travel bag:  High quality 25-40 liter travel pack with (preferably fold-away) hip belt. This is for clothes, electronics, toiletries, gifts.  Put all your liquids/gels in a quart Ziploc by itself for easy inspection removal.  My clothes are rolled up into an Eagle Creek 2-sided travel cube with a plastic divider in the middle to separate the clean from the unwashed (isolating the smell away from the clean clothes and the rest of the bag) without having to pack two separate clothes bags ... genius!  Always leave the travel bag at least one third empty for souvenirs and to leave room to carry:

1083_torch_red_l_z

Bag #2: Purse/man-bag or hiking waist-pack:  Everything you will need to survive up to 18 hours in your airplane, train, boat, bus or tuktuk seat (e.g., iPad, smartphone, snacks, eyeshade, earplugs, wet wipes, water bottle, etc). You never have to touch your main travel bag after putting it in the overhead bin.

geartie2. Going through Security:  Put the small bag inside the big bag.  Put everything except your picture ID and boarding pass into one of the big bag's zippered pockets and secure it with a heavy duty twist-tie (I use Nite Ize gear ties).

Since your Ziploc bag with liquids/gels is in its own pocket (right?) you won't accidentally lose anything taking it out for inspection.

After clearing security, it'll take 30 seconds to put the Ziploc bag back in, your shoes back on and be on your way.  Walk until you find a nice quiet area of the airport away from potential pickpockets to put everything back in your pants pockets. Walk by the folks paying $4.50 for a small bottle of water and, without being smug, fill your empty water bottle from a drinking fountain. (Check here to see if the water is safe to drink.)

3. How do I know what to bring?  As you pack your bags, make a text list on your smartphone of everything you pack.  On your trip, once in a while when you're bored waiting for a bus or plane, go through the list and put a + next to everything you actually used. Next time you travel, don't pack anything without a + next to it.

Even after all these years my travel pack gets a little lighter every time I travel.  That's important because if it's too early to check in to a hotel, I can actually walk around town all day with my light pack (with at least 75% of the weight resting on the hip belt, not the shoulder straps!) unlike "overpackers".

 4. How do I wash my clothes, for freeIn the shower with hotel soap and/or shampoo, while you're still wearing them. That's why world travelers swear by quick-dry Marmot, Icebreaker and Ex-Officio clothing. Start with t-shirt, socks, shorts, undies, then yourself.

After your shower, first wring them out as dry as you can without overly stressing the fabric. Then, lay a hotel towel out on the bed, put one article of clothing on it at a time, roll it up as tightly as possible, then sit on it for a few seconds. This gets them much drier than hand-wringing alone. Your clothes will now easily air dry overnight draped over the furniture even if there's no fan or A/C.

5. How do I figure out where to stay and what to do, for free?  Before you travel: WIKITRAVELor Quora. After you travel: ask people.

My personal system is to upload Wikitravel pages to my Evernote account, which I have set to automatically download to my iPhone, so I can use them even with no Internet connection. No muss, no fuss ...

6. How do I make friends in a strange city or country if I don't know anyone and I'm an introvert (that's me!)? Sign up for a several-hour activity of some kind through your hotel, hostel or whoever's offering one. Elephant riding, bamboo raft ride, parasailing, ziplining, hot springs soak, cooking class ... doesn't matter, whatever floats your boat. You'll inevitably meet people with whom you have something in common, strike up a conversation, and gather serious intel on this location (since they've probably been there a day or two) and lots of other places they just visited that they can't wait to tell you about and show you pictures of themselves standing in front of.

At $2.4 Million, This Yacht Parking Spot Near Cannes Is A Bargain

0
0

There's a yacht parking spot available just a 20-minute drive from Cannes, France, and broker Moran Yacht & Ship says the $2.4 million price tag is a steal.

The berth, number 29 at the Port de Mandelieu in La Napoule, is marked down from $3.42 million for a ten-year lease. The price is "in the market" and negotiable, Moran Yacht & Ship told Business Insider. It dropped from last year "due to uncertainties regarding lease prolongation by the authorities."

The berth is 44 meters long, 8.1 meters wide and 6 meters deep, enough to fit a sizeable yacht, though nothing huge.

So if you're looking for a place to keep your luxury yacht, now may be the time to head to France.

Here's an aerial view:

HOUSE OF THE DAY: After A $60 Million Discount, Connecticut Mansion Is No Longer America's Most Expensive Home

0

Cooper beach mansion $190 million

Last May, a Connecticut mansion went on the market for $190 million and became the most expensive home for sale in the U.S.

Now, that price tag has been reduced to $130 million, meaning the property  Greenwich's Copper Beech Farm  no longer holds that title, according to Curbed (an estate in Dallas remains on the market for $135 million).

The 50-acre property dates back to the 1890s, and is currently owned by timber magnate John Rudey. It carries a reported $120 million in debt, likely accounting for the sky-high initial sale price.

The 12-bedroom home has 15,000 square feet of living space, 7,000 square feet of basement and attic space, and an 1,800-foot-long driveway. There's also a grass tennis court, innumerable gardens, apple orchard, greenhouses, 75-foot-long heated pool, and a carriage house.

The estate is currently listed with Christie's International Real Estate and David Ogilvy & Associates.

RANKED: The Most Popular Girl Scout Cookies

0
0

Girl Scout cookies are a national icon, making an average of $800 million annually. Last year, troops of green-sashed little girls sold more than 200 million boxes of cookies, Girl Scouts of America told Business Insider.

And because National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend kicks off on February 7th, people around the country can expect to start seeing those colorful boxes in offices and malls in the coming months.

In honor of the cookies' return, we asked Girl Scouts of America which flavors were the most popular.

Here are the top five cookies, along with a rough count of how many boxes were sold last year.

5. Trefoils/Shortbread Cookies

girl scout cookies trefoils shortbread9% of last year's sales came from Trefoils, also known as Shortbread cookies. That means over 18 million boxes of the buttery cookies were sold, which adds up to roughly 720 million Trefoils (40 cookies per box).

4. Do-si-dos/Peanut Butter Sandwiches

Do si dos girl scout cookiesOver 22 million boxes of Do-si-dos, were sold last year, accounting for around 11% of sales. At 20 cookies per box, that means we scarfed down more than 440 million of those peanut butter sandwiches.

3. Tagalongs/Peanut Butter Patties

Tagalongs peanut butter patties girl scout cookiesOver 26 million boxes, or 13% of all sales, went to Tagalongs last year. Those chocolate-covered peanut butter treats have an average of 14 patties per box, which equals 364 million cookies.

2. Samoas/Caramel deLites

Samoas caramel de-lites girl scout cookiesThese delicious combinations of chocolate, cookie, caramel, and toasted coconut accounted for 19% of last year's sales. That's well over 38 million boxes, and roughly 570 million cookies (given that Samoas have an average of 15 cookies per box).

1. Thin Mints

Thin Mints girl scout cookiesOf course, Thin Mints are the #1-selling Girl Scout cookie in America. The crispy treats merge chocolate and mint for one delicious snack. Girl Scouts of America sold more than 50 million boxes last year, or roughly 1.6 billion cookies (with an average of 32 cookies per box). Thin Mints made up 25% of total cookie sales.

For those keeping track, the remaining 23% of sales were made up collectively by all the other varieties of cookies, including Dulce de Leches, Savannah Smiles, Thank You Berry Munches, Thanks a Lots, Cranberry Citrus Crisps, Lemonades, and Mango Crèmes — basically, all the flavors you judge people for ordering.

It also did not include this year's new flavor, gluten-free Chocolate Chip Shortbread cookies that are making waves among Girl Scout cookie aficionados.

And if you disagree with the ranking and feel really strongly about one of the 12 flavors, you can go to the Girl Scouts website and vote on your favorite cookie. So far, Samoas/Caramel deLites are winning.

We Tried This Do-It-Yourself Kit That Turns Cheap Vodka Into Gin

homemade gin

Making your own liquor can be dangerous (not to mention illegal).

But we're in something of a craft distilling renaissance these days, and people really want to make their own booze.

For gin enthusiasts, now you can.

We sampled the HomeMade Gin Kit, which provides juniper berries, botanicals, and the necessary flasks and funnels to make it all possible.

All you need is 36 hours and a bottle of vodka (not included).

Our verdict: Gin lovers might find this gin different from what they're used to. Given the strong botanical flavor, mixologists might be wiser to make a cocktail out of it rather than a classic G&T. But for $50, it still makes for a fun novelty gift.

You can read more about the HomeMade Gin Kit here.

The kit includes two flasks, directions, the ingredients, a strainer, and a funnel. We went to our local liquor store and grabbed a bottle of cheap vodka.

The juniper and botanicals are what will turn the vodka into gin.

First up, the juniper berries.

Get The Best Nap Possible With A Sleep Mask That Mimics The Sunrise

0
0

We've all heard that naps are good for us, both for our physical wellbeing and in our professional livesRecent scientific studies have even shown that short power naps of 20 to 30 minutes can improve cognitive function and boost productivity.

But sleeping in the middle of the day comes with its own set of complications. It's tough to set aside time for a nap, and waking up suddenly can leave you feeling groggy for the rest of the day.

A new sleep mask developed by engineers from MIT, Harvard Medical School, and Stanford aims to solve that problem, using calming lights to help you wake up slowly and make the most of your limited napping time.

napwell maskThe Napwell lets you specify how long of a nap you'd like to take, adjustable with a timer on the front of the mask. As you draw closer to your nap's end time, the inside of the mask gradually lights up, mimicking a natural sunrise and gently bringing you out of sleep.

napwell mask insideAccording to the company's Kickstarter page, waking gradually helps to prevent "sleep inertia," or that groggy feeling you get when you're awoken abruptly.

"Our goal is to build products that help people lead efficient and productive lives," co-creator Justin Lee said to TechCrunch. "The mask is battery operated so you don’t need WiFi, Bluetooth, or a smartphone to make it work. This goes back to our philosophy of building products so that they can be used by anyone, anywhere."

The Napwell isn't the first gadget to use artificial sunrises to improve sleep — lamps like the Philips Wake-up Light and Pure Twilight have the same idea. Incorporating the technology into a sleep mask that can be easily transported, however, is a whole new spin on the concept.

The Napwell was successfully funded on Kickstarter last week, and preorders are now being taken on the company's site for $60.

You Can't Take Uber To The Super Bowl

metlife stadium

If you're heading to Super Bowl XLVIII in New Jersey on Sunday and were planning to grab an Uber or a taxi, think again.

According to the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT), taxicabs and for-hire vehicles will not be allowed to access MetLife stadium:

Please be aware that due to eestricted [sic] access at MetLife Stadium, yellow and green taxicabs as well as any for-hire-vehicles will not have access to the stadium and should not attempt to provide passenger service to the game.

Taking any kind of car from New York to New Jersey for the game seems like a bad idea. The DOT says to "expect increased activity and limited use" around the Lincoln Tunnel and on these streets:

  • Ninth Avenue, between West 34th – 65th streets

  • Westbound lanes of 42nd Street, river to river

  • 57th Street, river to river

  • 49th Street, river to river

  • 53rd Street, river to river

There are, however, plenty of public transportation options to get to the game Sunday. Read about them here.
