Flying Business Class Really Is An All-You-Can-Eat Buffet

$

doha airport food

DOHA — I'm currently on my way from New York City to Tanzania, where I'll visit "the best hotel in the world" and some lesser-known game reserves in the southern part of the country.

After a 12-hour flight from JFK International Airport, I've spent the last six hours in Qatar Airways' premium terminal at Doha International Airport, and there's almost nothing to do here but eat.

Eating has pretty much been the theme of my trip since I arrived at JFK last night around 9 p.m. It's my first time flying business class, and I'm quickly realizing that one of the biggest differences between a coach ticket and a business class ticket is the food.

First there was the buffet in the Admirals Club at JFK's Terminal 8, which featured everything from roast chicken to pasta salad even though it was nearing midnight by the time I left.

And from the moment I sat down on the first leg of my flight on Qatar Airways, I was plied with food. Dinner, which was served around 1 a.m., was a five-course meal that included an amuse bouche and cheese course. The airline is known for its food and service — it was recently named the world's best airline by Skytrax — but I still didn't actually expect to enjoy the taste of my airplane meal.

buffet admirals club jfkNow I'm Qatar Airways' holding pen for business class travelers, and it's pretty impressive. The expansive room has several seating and rest areas, as well as a business center, kids' playroom, and clinic. There are no blaring speakers, either — an airline employee walks around the entire center and quietly informs travelers every time a flight starts boarding.

But the real highlight of the premium terminal is the food. There are three separate buffet areas, as well as four dessert buffets and a bar. Men in chefs' toques constantly replenish the fare and a waitstaff in suits set tables with linen napkins and serve drinks.

There's a continental buffet with beef stew, a mixed seafood curry, and steamed vegetables. There's also the Oriental Brasserie, where plates of sushi sit alongside salmon falafel and skewered shrimp.

Nothing I tried at the buffets was outstanding, except for an Asian-style chicken salad, but everything has been good, and piping hot. And it sure beats standard airport fare.

Scroll down to see some of the dining options in business class. You'll be able to find all my stories about the trip here.

Disclosure: Our trip to Tanzania, including travel and lodging expenses, was paid for by the Tanzania Tourist Board, The Africa Adventure Company and Singita Grumeti Group, and Coastal Aviation.

'Dead' Man Turns Up At His Own Funeral In Brazil

dead guy brazil

If there's one surefire way to make sure your funeral is remembered, its turning up at it alive.

That, at least, was the experience of Gilberto Araújo, a 41-year-old car-washer from Brazil, whose unexpected arrival at his own wake reportedly sparked terror and then delight among his family and friends.

Araújo's family, from the town of Alagoinhas, about 70 miles from Salvador, had mistakenly identified a body in the local morgue as his and were mourning his death on Sunday night when the man they believed was in the coffin beside them showed up at the front door.

"A friend told me there was a coffin and that I was inside it," he said. "I said, 'guys, I'm alive – pinch me,'" Araújo was quoted by the O Globo news website.

His appearance prompted some people to faint and others to flee in panic.

His mother, Maria Menezes, a shopkeeper, said: "It was a fright. I'm very happy because what mother has a son that they say is dead then turns up alive?"

The mixup is reported to have stemmed from the fact that another car-washer in the town, who closely resembled Araújo, was murdered at the weekend, and police called Araújo's brother, José Marcos , to tell him they believed his brother was the dead man.

The brother then went to the morgue and wrongly identified the body. "Police called my husband and told him that his brother had been killed and his body was at the morgue," Jose Marcos Araujo's wife, Ana Paula, told the UOL website.

Police Inspector Roberto Lima said the confusion was "understandable", as Araújo and Genivaldo Santos Gama, the man later named as the real murder victim, looked so alike. "The two men closely resembled each other and both worked as car-washers," he said.

Araújo said he had learned of the mistake from an acquaintance, who had come up to him in the street to tell him his family was setting off for his funeral. He had tried to tell them he was still alive by telephoning, he said, but his call was dismissed as a cruel prank. There seemed nothing for it but to turn up in person.

"He went to his mother's home to let everyone know he was very much alive," said Lima.

It Costs A Fortune For Kate Middleton To Look So Gorgeous

Kate Middleton Princess Duchess of Cambridge

Kate Middleton is one of the most-emulated women in the world. Women rush to copy everything from her hairstyle to the brands she wore.

But looking like Middleton is basically impossible for the average woman.

According to an analysis in the Australian Vogue, she spends about $160,000 a year to look as gorgeous as she does. We converted the amounts from Australian currency to dollars and rounded to the nearest hundred.

Here's a basic rundown of her expenses, according to the magazine:

  • About $56,000 on her wardrobe, which includes both cheap items from retailers like Zara and designer Stella McCartney duds.
  • Getting a deluxe facial every two weeks: $6,600 per year.
  • Keratin hair treatments and blow-outs three times a week cost $14,000 per year.
  • The Duchess spends $3,100 per year on coloring her hair chocolate brown every six weeks.
  • For all her cosmetics, Kate probably spends around $2,200 per year.
  • Kate's weekly manicure and pedicure cost about $6,700 per year.
  • Her twice-weekly spray tans cost $13,000 every year.
  • Kate also has miscellaneous expenses such as perfume, a personal trainer and skincare.

While the Duchess has more than her share of natural beauty, she definitely spends a lot for her polished look.

Fans shouldn't beat themselves up for not being able to achieve her perfectly coiffed hair.

The 'Snackification' Of America

$

Krispy Kreme Burger

America is becoming snackified.

"Snackification" is one of the hot food and dining trends mentioned in restaurant consultancy firm Baum+Whiteman's latest report for 2013.

People are eating less at every meal, but they're making up for it with endless snacking. Snacks now account for one of every five "eating occasions," and the traditional three meals are "degenerating into nibbles and bits."

So, why's this happening?

There are a variety of reasons. People are always on the move, they're looking for a quick satisfying fix, they're needing a jolt of energy or they've missed lunch.

Either way, people are flocking to snacks, and now snacks are getting more sophisticated than they've ever been.

From the report:

Greasy fries no longer do the trick. Snacks are becoming increasingly sophisticated … glorified mini-burgers, wraps with exotic fillings, upscale dips are building off-hours bar traffic. Lots more minis showing up at fast food chains, adding impulse revenue to between-meal shoulder hours … cake bits, mini-dippers, teeny shakes.

You find all-hours grazing across the economic spectrum: Food trucks define a new market for creative, portable food … and hotel lobbies, morphing into livingdining rooms, give rise to social snacking and all-day drinking … and breakfast getting fancified and served at all hours.

Every food purveyor is chasing after serial munchers … particularly convenience stores and drug stores … ramping 7/11 snack tray, Japan, coming to you up new selections with “fresh” connotations. Walgreen, 7/11 et al grabbing market share from fast feeders and restaurant takeaway departments.

And, in turn, companies are responding.

Take fast food for for instance. KFC's a big player in the industry, and it has been leaning toward snacks. It may actually be KFC's "next frontier."

Tim Nelson, president of ad agency Tris3ct, explains to Nation's Restaurant News:

“The next frontier for a place like KFC is to become a snack destination. The sales and traffic growth in QSR is going to come around snacking. You also can sell these Dip’ems in the drive-thru, which where you can sell more drinks, where the best margins come in.”

Lady Gaga's Name Now Graces 19 Species Of Fern

A group of researchers at Duke University have an obsession with Lady Gaga. How do I know this? They've named a genus of ferns after the pop star.

The genus, a classification label for a group of closely related species, contains 19 ferns found in Central and South America, Mexico, Arizona and Texas. They've named the genus "Gaga" and it includes two species new to science and 17 that have been reclassified based on their genetics. Lady gaga and one of the 19 ferns named after her

The press release from Duke explains:

At one stage of its life, the new genus Gaga has somewhat fluid definitions of gender and bears a striking resemblance to one of Gaga's famous costumes. Members of the new genus also bear a distinct DNA sequence spelling GAGA.

Two of the species in the Gaga genus are new to science: Gaga germanotta from Costa Rica is named to honor the family of the artist, who was born Stefani Germanotta. And a newly discovered Mexican species is being dubbed Gaga monstraparva (literally monster-little) in honor of Gaga's fans, whom she calls €œlittle monsters.

Airlines Are Going To Start Profiling You And Deciding How Much You Should Pay For A Ticket

$

airfare, airplane, plane

Airlines are about to start testing a new ticket initiative meant to compete with airfare websites, according to USA Today's Bart JansenIf all goes well, it could be adopted by 2016.

Basically the initiative involves asking for personal information, including frequent flier membership, travel history, and use of credit card, to cook up a personalized ticket. This would enable them to offer discounts to frequent fliers or bundle charges such as meals, extra legroom or expedited boarding.

Is this good for consumers? Hard to say yet.

Some consumers will be put off if they feel their information is being used against them to charge higher prices, said Brett Snyder of CrankyFlier.com, which tracks the airline industry: "It won't go over well."

However, "travelers should be excited if the airlines use [the plan] well," he said, like if they offer a bag fee or not based on their status. "If the airlines are concerned about public perception, then there should be a standard widely available published rate as there is today, but as people log in, it should give the opportunity to bring the cost down."

Speaking of status, "having airline elite status or an airline co-branded credit card is even more important than ever," said The Flight Deal, a daily deals site. With the move toward an à la carte pricing model, it's the only way consumers can dodge fees and be the first to nab discounts.

The pricing plan could also make life harder for agents if they can't access the same discounts as airlines. "In theory, the airlines want travel agents to have access to this," said Snyder, who runs a concierge service of his own, "but the third party intermediaries that airlines use to make reservations stand in the way of that becoming a reality." As a result, people might turn to booking experts if airline pricing becomes more complex and they'll jack up their prices.

Comparison sites might try to show the differentiated prices to users, if the airlines allow it.  "If the opportunity is out there, it might force these sites to push for a better customer experience," said Snyder. "They could go with an alternate strategy of trying to scold the airlines, and from past experience, that wouldn't be a surprise. But they always end up resolving their issues in the end because both sides need other—for now."

A Model Who Partied With Prince Harry In Vegas Claims The UK Secret Service Put Her In Jail

$

0

prince harry vegas poolA former model jailed hours after claiming she enjoyed a “drunken fumble” with a naked Prince Harry in a Las Vegas hotel room has blamed the British secret service for her month-long stay in prison.

Carrie Reichert, who claims she is 32 but according to police records is 40, said in August that she had spent 20 minutes alone with Prince Harry after being hand-picked to attend the hotel party.

Within hours of going public, she was arrested for allegedly bouncing £13,000 worth of cheques and spent almost a month in one of the toughest prisons in the US.

Yesterday, Miss Reichert said she had not been treated fairly and blamed her incarceration on the intervention of British security services. She said: “I believe the British secret service or whoever protects the royals have something to do with my situation.”

In August, Prince Harry was photographed playing strip billiards with a girl in a £5,100 eight-room suite at the Encore Wynn resort.

Miss Reichert, a beautician, claimed she was one of 10 “really pretty girls” who were hand-picked to attend the party and described Prince Harry as a “gentleman”. She said that they shared a kiss that was “fun” and “not romantic”.

She said the pair then had a conversation about her childhood in Britain before enjoying a “drunken fumble”. She told the People newspaper: “I’m not going to pass an opportunity to party with Prince Harry. Harry was already undressed [when I arrived]. It was just crazy, he looked actually delirious.

“There was a pool table and he was playing air guitar with pool sticks. We kissed for 15 to 20 minutes. I am sure someone stumbled in as there were people going in and out of rooms all the time. We kissed again and he said 'that was great’.”

Her claims are strongly denied by royal aides, who said they were “completely untrue” and that she was not even present on the night of the party.

Miss Reichert told the newspaper that she was 32, but the warrant issued for her arrest in the US disclosed her true age.

She was arrested at San Diego airport shortly after the interview was published on Aug 24 for allegedly writing four “rubber” cheques worth a total of £13,000.

She denies the charges, which date back to 2003, claiming that the cheques related to a failed business venture. She spent almost a month in Harrison County jail in Mississippi, which is known as one of the toughest prisons in the country.

Donald Rafferty, her lawyer, said her treatment appeared excessive. He said: “She became very high-profile very quickly because of an interview she gave that had an impact.

“I am not convinced that Mississippi authorities were the ones necessarily stirring [things], but something was. She is disappointed and very upset over the way this is going down. She has several legitimate defences.”

In the US, writing cheques which do not clear can be a criminal offence. Officials at the circuit court of Harrison County confirmed that Miss Reichert had been arrested on a “felony bad cheque” charge.

According to Mr Rafferty, US authorities did not need to jail Miss Reichert but could have released her on bail. The Mississippi attorney general, however, treats “bad cheque” charges seriously and Miss Reichert could spend up to five years in prison if found guilty.

The attorney general in Mississippi said: “It is an open case and it would be inappropriate for us to comment.”

Prince Harry’s trip raised concerns about his royal security officers, who accompanied him but failed to intervene and stop photographs being taken.

The College Bubble Just Got A Little More Inflated

Yale campus, students

We all know that the cost of a college education is ridiculously high—topping out at almost $60,000 per year—but a new report by The College Board says that college prices are higher than ever.

The College Board Advocacy & Policy Center's Trends in College Pricing 2012 report found that overall the average cost of tuition and fees has gone up for both public and private schools by over 4%.

Here are some of the key findings from the College Board report:

  • Average published tuition and fees for in-state students at public four-year colleges and universities increased from $8,256 in 2011-12 to $8,655 in 2012-13. The 4.8% increase in tuition and fees was accompanied by a $325 (3.7%) increase in room and board charges for students living on campus. At $9,205, room and board charges account for more than half of the total charges for these students.
  • Average published tuition and fees for out-of-state students at public four-year colleges and universities increased by $883 (4.2%), from $20,823 in 2011-12 to $21,706 in 2012-13. Total charges, including room and board for students living on campus, average $30,911.
  • Average published tuition and fees at private nonprofit four-year institutions increased by $1,173 (4.2%), from $27,883 in 2011-12 to $29,056 in 2012-13. Total charges, including room and board for students living on campus, average $39,518.
  • Average published in-state tuition and fees at public two-year colleges increased by $172 (5.8%), from $2,959 in 2011-12 to $3,131 in 2012-13.

And though it is difficult to project future prices, it's likely that the cost of tuition will continue to rise, leaving students with enormous amounts of debt in student loans.

Given the high cost of tuition, do you think college is worth it? Take our survey below on the Best Colleges in America—or tell us why it's all a big waste of money.

Russian Officials Need To Stop Wearing Incredibly Expensive Watches

$

Earlier this year we brought you the story of Russian Orthodox Church Leader and his mysterious disappearing $30,000 watch.

Patriarch Kirill's team had apparently Photoshopped the Breguet watch out a photo from an official event, apparently hoping to stem any criticism about why a religious leader would be wearing such an expensive watch. Of course their plan backfired and the story spread from blogs to international press in a matter of days.

Have Russian officials learned?

Apparently not. The New York Times' Lede Blog as a great summary of the case of ethnic republic Udmurtia’s president, Alexander Volkov, who appeared on a billboard and cuddling a tiger and wearing some kind of watch.

Russian bloggers were soon able to reveal that the plain watch on the poster had in fact been stuck on top of the previous, more glamorous watch.

Here's the poster:

Russia Watch

This video below shows that the new watch is a sticker.

The blogger, Andrey Konoval, was able get the sticker off and post photos of the watch below on his blog. It appears to be the "Classique Complications" watch from Breguet.

Volkov's team denied that the president had worn either watch, and insisted that both watches had been added by the poster's designers. However Konoval has been able to find more images of the watch, despite an apparent attempt to scrub photos of the expensive watch from the internet.

Volkov may have something else to hide. According to Ria Novosti, the covered-up watch was thought to be worth $123,000 — slightly over Volkov's annual salary of 3.6 million rubles ($116,000). Exactly how he would be able to afford it isn't clear

Russia isn't the only country where bloggers are uncovering the wild watches of allegedly corrupt individuals.

In recent months in China many allegedly corrupt officials have seen their watches passed around on Weibo. In at least one of these cases, the official has since been fired.

Our advice to corrupt officials around the world: leave the watches at home.

The costume-booze industrial complex long ago repurposed Halloween from a night about chills into an opportunity for women to dress in "sexy," "sassy," and sometimes "sultry" outfits, rather than scary ones.

While we've grown immune to shops shilling everything from sexy cop to sexy Bert and Ernie (yes, that Bert and Ernie) garb, there's one recent trend that we can't get used to ... sexy costumes for pets.

Americans spent $310 million on pet costumes last year, and some showed a little too much fur.

Redfin Is Transforming Real Estate By Thinking Like Apple

redfin app

Glenn Kelman, CEO of Redfin, wants his company to be the Apple Store of real estate.

"Shopping for a home should be all about the customer," Kelman told us. "By thinking more like a retailer, it's possible to make the experience better."

Kelman said he was particularly inspired by the Apple store model, in which employees are extensively trained as experts and customers are helped at the Genius Bar.

Many people don't look forward to buying a home, and see it as a chore, like buying a used car, Kelman told us. They're also wary of trusting real estate agents because they're painfully aware of the commission at stake.

Redfin made a few changes to the classic real estate model to make the experience better for the customer.

Redfin's agents are paid a good salary and their commission is dependent on customer satisfaction. Customers have access to all the listings online, and don't have to rely on a realtor to show them what's for sale. The company also charges a lower commission than most agencies.

The company also has an amazing real estate app that allows people to drive around and search for nearby listings that fit their criteria. That makes it easier to browse by neighborhood.

The model is working: Redfin's homes sell 15 days faster and for $8,700 more than average. The company also has a 97 percent customer satisfaction rating.

Right now, the majority of Redfin's customers are under the age of 40. The older crowd is harder to draw in because they already have established companies realtors.

But Redfin's model is appealing to today's demanding consumer.

"We wanted homebuyers to feel like their agent was someone on their side," Kelman said. "We've racked our brains to think about how we can make the process of buying a home cooler, easier and more efficient."

Park Your Yacht In The Front Yard At This Incredible New House in Poland

MOOMOO Architects Yacht House

What's a luxury house without the ultimate parking space?

We've shown you the Singapore high-rise that allows you to park your car in the living room, but this Yacht House by Polish architecture firm MOOMOO Architects takes it to the next level.

The firm designed a home in Poland that has a parking space for a yacht (or any boat, really) in the front yard.

A water canal runs through the central design of the house and the house includes a lock lift that would allow the boat to sail along the window line of the kitchen and living room.

The U-shaped house, which is currently undergoing construction, is 700 square meters (not including storage rooms and the garage), and will be embedded on a steep slope that is close to the shoreline, giving unparalleled views of the water. The home is being built for for private clients.

This schematic shows how the yacht would be parked. The lock lift rises once the boat is docked to secure it from drifting away.

The inspiration for the working canal came when the Polish architects learned of their clients' love for motor yachts.

A look at the house from the side shows how the yacht would sail past the lower-level windows of the house.

New Yorkers Are Hiding Exotic Pets In Their Apartments

New York is often called the concrete jungle, but some Manhattan dwellers are giving that phrase new meaning with their exotic pets.

As of late, New Yorkers have been caught keeping jaguars, kangaroos, and wolves in their apartments, Caitlin Abdo of Real Estate Weekly is reporting.

Abdo writes:

It seems that if they can covertly transport the exotic pet into the building, they can remain there happily unless the animal becomes disruptive and draws attention to itself.

Overall, national pet ownership is on the rise. But leave it to New Yorkers to try and go bigger, better, and wilder than everyone else.

City Connections broker Mollie Bean told Real Estate Weekly she ran into a jaguar that the owner swore "doesn't bite" while showing an apartment. Another agent talked about trying to find a duplex for a client and his pet kangaroo.

For the record, section 161.01 of the Health Code of New York City bans the housing of a wild animal in residential buildings, but that doesn't stop most residents who have an affinity for wild pets.

Media mogul John Malone owns land equivalent to twice the state of Delaware or 151 times the island of Manhattan.

Malone's 2.2 million acre empire is the largest private landholding in the country, according to The 2012 Land Report. His lands range from forests, dessert, islands, to ports.

And while many of the largest landholders in the country have held their land for decades, Malone acquired most of his land recently. Malone purchased the 290,000-acre New Mexico Bell Ranch in 2010 and over 1-million acres of Maine and New Hampshire wilderness in 2011.

Malone owns around 500,000 acres in Colorado, including the Greenland Ranch, shown here, off I-25 between Denver and Colorado City.
