ipad using man

Microsoft Word allows you to write, edit, and save documents — whether it's a shared assignment, a presentation for work, or a personal project. Although it's most commonly used on a PC or Mac computer, you can also download the app to access files on your iPad.

The Word app is extremely similar to the desktop version, and allows you to create a blank document or start from a template. Additionally, you can quickly view a list of your recent files or shared projects. After downloading the app from the App Store, you'll be prompted to sign into your Microsoft Office account, or create an account if you don't have one already.

It's important to note that your document changes will only sync across devices if you are signed in with the same Microsoft Office account on both the mobile app and your PC or Mac.

Here's how to download and sign into the Microsoft Word app on your iPad, along with how to use it.

Prince Andrew

Prince Andrew's attempts to stem the slew of negative press he's received over his association with late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has turned into a "PR disaster."

In a nearly hourlong Newsnight special interview with BBC presenter Emily Maitlis that aired Saturday, the Duke of York spoke publicly and answered questions for the first time about his friendship with Epstein and the sexual abuse allegations made against the royal himself. Most notably, Prince Andrew said that he has "no recollection" of having met Virginia Giuffre, an American woman who alleges that she was subjected to abuse by Epstein and forced to have sex with Prince Andrew when she was underage.

The duke had previously "emphatically denied" these allegations (which first circulated widely in 2015) via a Buckingham Palace spokesman and apologized for his friendship with Epstein, which continued even after Epstein was a registered sex offender.

In the BBC interview, the prince also offered several extremely specific alibis in an attempt to "prove" he never had sex with Giuffre while she was underage. On the day of one particular alleged encounter, the prince said, he was "at home" with his children, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, after having taken Beatrice out for pizza. He claimed to remember the outing "weirdly distinctly" because it was an "unusual thing" for him to do.

The reaction and backlash to Prince Andrew's "car-crash" BBC interview was near immediate. The Financial Times reported that the royal "is losing corporate support for his charitable work as companies including KPMG and Aon distance themselves from the Queen's second son in order to protect their reputations." Bloomberg's James Ludden called the high-profile interview "a farce that threatens to be the British royal family's biggest public relations disaster since its handling of the death of Princess Diana in 1997."

Criticism similarly poured in on social media, particularly on Twitter.

"I expected a train wreck,'' Charlie Proctor, editor of the Royal Central website, which reports on the British monarchy, tweeted on Saturday. "That was a plane crashing into an oil tanker, causing a tsunami, triggering a nuclear explosion-level bad."

As Business Insider's Sahar Esfandiari previously reported, the interview has seemingly intensified attacks on Prince Andrew, with many noting that his alibis seem implausible and that he didn't express sympathy for the alleged victims of Epstein's sex-trafficking, including by trivializing the situation when he referred to Epstein's crimes as "unbecoming" conduct.

A spokesperson for Prince Andrew didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

iPhone X home screen apps

The Notes app on your iPhone is a great way to stay organized. You can also share notes with friends or sync across multiple devices using iCloud

Regardless of how, or how often, you use Notes, you may want to adjust your Settings to personalize the app. These adjustments are all found in the Settings app on your iPhone.

Along with adjusting how notes are sorted, you can change how new notes start — changing the title, headings, subheadings, and body text. The iOS 13 update automatically switched notes to start with a large, bold title. If you noticed this change and you'd like to switch back to starting with normal body text, you can also learn how to do so here.

Here's how to make that change, along with others.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

15 newspaper front pages show how the media reacted to Prince Andrew's 'car crash' interview about Jeffrey Epstein

prince andrew

Britain's Prince Andrew became the laughingstock of the tabloid world over the weekend, when he sat down for a very awkward interview about his past friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The interview was largely panned since the Duke of York didn't show much regret for continuing the relationship once the sexual abuse accusations against Epstein first started coming out in the late aughts.

And he made up several elaborate excuses to discredit the allegations made by one of Epstein's accusers, Virginia Giuffre Roberts, who alleges that she was forced to have sex with the prince as a teen.

Here's how 15 tabloids covered the story.

A long-awaited interview with Britain's Prince Andrew about his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein aired Saturday night on the BBC.

The interview was widely panned since the Duke of York failed to show remorse for Epstein's victims, and gave excuses trying to discredit claims that he had sex with one of Epstein's victims, who was a minor at the time.

Tabloids in the UK and the US were largely negative in their coverage of the interview.

Epstein accuser Virginia Roberts Giuffre said she was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew when she was 17, and said that he sweated profusely before their sexual encounter in 2001.

Prince Andrew tried to discredit Giuffre Roberts' story by saying he had a medical issue at the time which made it impossible to sweat at the time.

Prince Andrew also claimed that the night Giuffre Roberts alleged he met her at a club, he was actually at a pizza party with his eldest daughter.

The general tone of many of the stories was that Prince Andrew didn't show enough remorse in his interview.

Many of the headlines the morning after the interview focused on Andrew's pizza restaurant alibi.

Others laughed at his claim to have an issue sweating.

Some outlets spoke to sources who relayed how Prince Andrew believed the interview was a success.

The Daily Mail's royal correspondent, Rebecca English, reported that Prince Andrew told friends he "regretted" not expressing sympathy for Epstein's victims.

Tribeca, a trendy neighborhood in downtown Manhattan, is home to New York City's richest ZIP code, where the average income of residents is $879,000, Bloomberg reported.

It's the fifth-richest ZIP code in the US, according to Bloomberg's ranking.

Tribeca is "the epitome of downtown cool," according to StreetEasy. The neighborhood, which borders the Hudson River to the west and the Financial District to the south, is a celebrity hotspot that has been home to stars including Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lawrence, and Steven Spielberg.

And real estate in Tribeca is notoriously pricey. PropertyShark ranked it the most expensive neighborhood in New York City, with a median sale price of $3.9 million. The median rent is $6,195, according to StreetEasy.

Earlier this year, I spent an afternoon walking through the downtown Manhattan neighborhood. Here's what New York City's richest and most expensive ZIP code looks like.

DON'T MISS: The East Coast's priciest ZIP code is a tiny Hamptons village of 322 residents. Here's what it's like living in Sagaponack, where the median home price is $4.3 million.

Tribeca, a trendy neighborhood in downtown Manhattan, is New York City's richest ZIP code.

The average income of Tribeca residents is $879,000, according to a recent report from Bloomberg, making it the fifth-richest ZIP code in the US.

It's also the most expensive ZIP code in New York City, with a median sale price of $3.9 million, according to a recent report from PropertyShark.

Tribeca sits on the west side of lower Manhattan.

It borders the Hudson River to the west, SoHo to the north, Chinatown to the east, and the Financial District to the south.

Tribeca is well-served by public transportation.

The A, C, E, 2, 3, N, Q, R, and W trains all serve various parts of the neighborhood.

On a late-spring afternoon earlier this year, I decided to take a walking tour of Tribeca to get a feel for the neighborhood.

I walked up from my office in the Financial District, the neighborhood directly south of Tribeca. Even though it's not far from where I work, I had never spent much time in the neighborhood.

Tribeca, which used to be home to warehouses, is known for its industrial architecture.

But in recent years, sleek luxury condominium towers have been rising across the neighborhood.

The tallest building in the neighborhood is 56 Leonard, a 60-story tower built in 2015.

It houses 145 condominium residences, including a four-bedroom penthouse on sale for $24.5 million. Another penthouse is listed for rent for $123,000 per month.

The cheapest available units in the building are a two-bedroom condo for $4.85 million and a one-bedroom rental for $8,850 per month, according to StreetEasy.

Tribeca is home to a Whole Foods Market that spans an entire city block.

It's one of two Whole Foods locations in lower Manhattan.

I also passed chains like Starbucks and the luxury fitness center Equinox, which has locations across New York City.

I saw many young families and parents pushing strollers in the neighborhood.

According to Niche, Tribeca is a relatively young neighborhood, with 45% of its population between ages 18 and 44.

One of New York City's most prestigious schools, Stuyvesant High School, is in Tribeca.

Wealthy New York families will pay a premium to live within walking distance of schools like Stuyvesant High School, Business Insider's Hillary Hoffower previously reported. The median sale price near the high school is $1.86 million.

I was surprised by the amount of green space I found in Tribeca.

I stumbled upon Teardrop Park, a 2-acre green space tucked away between Warren Street and Murray Street where a children's birthday party seemed to be taking place.

And just a few minutes' walk away is Hudson River Park, which offers panoramic views of the Hudson River and the New Jersey skyline.

It's the longest riverfront park in the US.

Tribeca is one of New York City's oldest neighborhoods, and much of its pre-Civil War architecture is intact.

"[Tribeca] boasts one of the world's largest collections of Neo-Grec designs and wrought-iron facades, in loft-style low-rises that real estate investors from around the globe covet," Heather Senison wrote for Forbes in 2018.

The neighborhood is known for its celebrity residents, several of whom have been known to cluster in one luxury condominium building: 443 Greenwich.

The luxury building has been called "paparazzi-proof" because of features such as its lower-level parking and interior courtyard garden.

Jennifer Lawrence looked into buying a condo there, according to Curbed New York, and Mike Myers bought a $14.65 million loft in the building in 2017, only to put it on the market a week later and eventually resell it at a loss for $14 million.

A penthouse in the building was on the market for $57 million earlier this year. As of September 16, it was no longer available.

The neighborhood is full of leafy cobblestone streets that are surprisingly quiet.

I can certainly understand why those areas would be attractive to celebrity buyers.

I started to head back toward the Financial District and passed a doggy daycare called PupCulture that had a sign out front advertising CBD products for dogs.

The sign read: "We now carry CBD oils, capsules, and edibles ... for the puppies!"

Given the skyrocketing popularity of CBD products, I shouldn't have been too surprised.

As I strolled through the neighborhood, I noticed that Tribeca is home to virtually all of the trendiest chains in the city, from restaurants to fitness centers.

Sweetgreen and Dig Inn, two of the most popular fast-casual healthy-ish dining options in the city, can both be found in Tribeca.

And when it comes to fitness, in addition to the usual suspect, Equinox — which can be found all over the city — Tribeca is home to Flywheel Sports, SoulCycle, Crunch Fitness, Barry's Bootcamp, Planet Fitness, Pure Barre, SLT Tribeca, a CrossFit gym, and other fitness centers.

Tribeca is also home to upscale eateries.

Among those eateries is Cut by Wolfgang Puck, "where New Yorkers broker deals over power meals," according to its website, as well as Wolfgang's Steakhouse.

The temperatures were in the low 80s during my tour of the neighborhood.

Many people were taking advantage of the weather by eating and drinking outside.

I noticed people wearing a lot of stylish athleisure jumpsuits, summer dresses, and sneakers.

I was also surprised by how many big dogs I saw in the neighborhood, given that New York City is home to some notoriously cramped apartments.

But considering the average income in the neighborhood is $879,000, I can also see how residents might have more disposable income to pay a place like PupCulture to walk their large dogs — and feed them CBD edibles.

As I wrapped up my tour of Tribeca, it struck me that the neighborhood draws a stark contrast to Billionaires' Row, the stretch of luxury skyscrapers along Central Park in midtown Manhattan.

On Billionaires' Row, penthouses sit at the top of 1,000-foot-tall luxury towers along Central Park, while most of the homes in Tribeca are literally more down-to-earth.

And while midtown Manhattan is a bustling business, tourism, and retail district, Tribeca is more walkable, a key factor when millennials are deciding where to live, with cobblestone streets and a vibrant restaurant and bar scene.

Millennials have also been called the "wellness generation," and they are willing to shell out serious money on gym memberships, which helps explain the plethora of fitness centers in Tribeca.

To me, while Billionaires' Row strikes me as more "old money," Tribeca, with its SoulCycles and Sweetgreens, exemplifies the changing look of wealth in the city.

3. A new menu will open. Near the top of this menu, there should be a toggle switch labeled, "Get notifications from apps and other senders." Switch it to "Off." This will turn off all notifications.

4. Two checkboxes remain: "Show me the Windows welcome experience..." and "Get tips and tricks..." These are like tutorials — if you're already familiar with how Windows 10 works, it's recommended that you uncheck these boxes as well.

5. Alternatively, if you scroll down, you can turn off notifications on an individual application-by-application basis. If you turned all notifications off already, these switches will be greyed out.

How to add a prepaid gift card to your PayPal account to use as a payment method

One of the obvious perks of the holiday season is gift cards galore.

Prepaid gift cards sold by credit card companies are a particularly great gift, because you can put the balance toward just about anything — including your PayPal account.

And adding a gift card balance to your PayPal account might be a good idea if you often use PayPal

It's also a great way to eliminate the possibility of forfeiting your funds before you've even had a chance to splurge — a lot of us are prone to losing physical copies of things.

Here's how to add a prepaid gift card from Visa, American Express, MasterCard, or Discover to your PayPal account.

How to add a gift card to PayPal

1. Go into your PayPal Wallet on a desktop computer.

How to add gift card to PayPal

2. Click "Link a debit or credit card."

3. Tap "Link a card manually" if given the option to link manually or through a bank.

4. Enter the gift card information.

5. Tap "Link Card."

How to add gift card to PayPal

Sometimes, you might run into an error trying to add a gift card to your PayPal account as a payment method because gift cards lack personal identifiers, unlike traditionally-issued credit cards.

If you run into this kind of trouble, register your gift card — there should be instructions on the card that will direct you to a website for registration.

Additionally, there are also ways to exchange non-credit card gift cards for money in your PayPal account, but the cost of the transaction is significant — usually a minimum of 10% of the value of the gift card.

This is especially true when you're at work or with the kids — fortunately, your iPhone's Screen Time feature can limit access to websites you'd rather not have pop up on that screen.

If you blocked access to a website you now wish to visit, you can undo the block in a matter of seconds, either by allowing that specific site or by turning off all restrictions. Both actions are handled in the same place.

Here's how to do it.

  • This sale also includes free shipping on orders of $50 or more.

In lieu of, or adjacent to Black Friday (however you want to view it), REI is running its annual Gear Up and Get Out sale now through November 25. REI hardly ever has sales, so despite where you stand on the matter of consumerism and Black Friday, you can probably save a good chunk of change on at least something you'll want or need in the coming year anyway. Why not join the masses from the (relative) safety of your home and computer screen?

The retailer is running deals on everything from skis and snowboards to camping and climbing gear to outdoor clothing. You can expect deals of up to 50% off and free shipping on orders of $50 or more.

If there's something you're looking for that's not on sale right now, REI Co-Op members can also get 20% off one full-price item that isn't on sale and an extra 20% off one REI Outlet item with the code GEARUP2019 during Gear Up and Get Out.

The best deals from REI's Gear Up and Get Out sale

  3. Buy one get one free on Nalgene bottles $10.95 (originally $10.95 each) [You save $10.95]
  4. Up to 33% off select Garmin GPS watches (and handhelds)
  5. Save 20% on Smith ski goggles and helmets
  6. REI Co-op Base Camp 4 Tent, $271.99 (originally $389) [You save $117.01]
  7. Save 25% on all Swiss Army Knives
  8. REI Co-op Men's Wallace Lake Down Shirt Jac, $63.99 (you save $65.01) [originally $129]
  9. Up to 65% off REI "Peak Deals" items
  10. Save up to 75% on select United By Blue clothing, apparel, and gear

How we selected the best deals at REI:

  • We only chose products that meet our high standard of coverage, and that we've either used ourselves or researched carefully.
  • All deals are at least 20% off, with the occasional exception for products that are rarely discounted or provide an outsized value.

Why we selected these particular deals:

patrei

1. Up to 30% off Patagonia clothing, jackets, and more

Patagonia stuff is, by and large, not cheap. 30% off puts the brand's top-notch outerwear that much more within reach, making it an exceptionally good time to buy it.

2. Up to 30% off Smartwool base layers, hats, gloves, and more

Smartwool is great in all seasons, but it really shines in winter, during ski season, which is often when we're stuck paying full price. This is a great time to stock up on the brand's merino wool products before heading out onto the slopes this year.

3. Buy one get one free on Nalgene bottles $10.95 (originally $10.95 each) [You save $10.95]

We could all stand to have an extra reusable water bottle lying around, and, probably two for that matter. Being unbreakable, Nalgene is a favorite, and a twofer always comes in handy if you're buying stocking stuffers or party favors.

4. Up to 33% off select Garmin GPS watches (and handhelds)

Garmin is a leader in the GPS realm and makes some of the most user-friendly handheld devices around. The brand also offers some great GPS watches for hikers and runners, and you can save well over $100 on select models.

5. Save 20% on Smith ski goggles and helmets

In 1965, Dr. Bob Smith brought to life the first prototype of the modern-day ski goggle. The brand as remained at the forefront of the technology ever since. As with any, Smith's goggles can run upwards of $200, so saving 20% is substantial.

6. REI Co-op Base Camp 4 Tent, $271.99 (originally $389) [You save $117.01]

REI Co-op's Base Camp tents aren't the lightest, but they're built well and much more affordable than others. Shave off an extra $100+? That's a steal.

7. Save 25% on all Swiss Army Knives

There's always room for a Swiss Army Knife, be it on a keychain, in a toolbox, or a pocketbook. Another item we don't see on sale all that much, this is a deal worth jumping on for most anyone on your list (over a certain age, at least).

8. REI Co-op Wallace Lake Down Shirt Jac - Men's, $63.99 (originally $129) [you save $65.01]

Shirt Jacs, Shackets, or Work Shirts, are all the rage of late, but for good reason. And while most of them are brushed cotton or flannel, this one is made with a light (but formidable) filling of down, and at its sale price is far less than most quality Shirt Jacs on the market.

9. Up to 65% off REI "Peak Deals" items

REI Peak Deals is a roundup of the retailer's best deals at any given moment and all of which are exclusively at least 50% off. REI-Co-op is healthily covered here, but you'll see tents from Kelty, ski goggles from Spy, and eventually (we predict) more.

10. Save up to 75% on select United By Blue clothing, apparel, and gear

United By Blue makes our favorite winter socks using Bison down, which is also used in its puffer vests and jackets. The brand also pulls one pound of plastic trash out of our waterways for every product it sells.

Shop REI deals by category:

REI return policy

If you're not happy with your purchase, you can return new products within 90 days of purchase and used gear within 30 days of purchase. You will, however, be responsible for shipping and handling. We recommend bringing returns to a store if there's one nearby.

Black Friday is coming up quickly, but for some retailers like Walmart, the big holiday sales event has already begun.

Online and offline, Walmart is one of the most popular retailers to shop during Black Friday. This year, you can once again expect great deals on all the products you need for gifting and personal use

You can now shop the best early Black Friday deals from Walmart's Deal Drops.

Shop the best early Walmart Black Friday 2019 deals by category:

  1. TV deals: Up to 60% off
  2. Smart home deals: Up to 50% off
  3. Wearable deals: Up to 30% off
  4. Video game deals: Up to 35% off
  5. Kitchen appliance deals: Up to 40% off

How we selected the best deals at Walmart:

  • We only chose products that meet our high standard of coverage, and that we've either used ourselves or researched carefully.
  • We compared the prices against other retailers like Target and Amazon and only included the deals that are the same or better (not including promotional discounts that come from using certain credit cards).
  • All deals are at least 20% off, with the occasional exception for products that are rarely discounted or provide an outsized value.

Shop the best of Walmart's Deal Drops:

1. Apple iPad (6th Gen) 128GB Wi-Fi

Best Buy and Target are also selling this 2018 model, 6th generation iPad, but you'll get the best Black Friday price at Walmart. It may not be the newest iPad, but it's still the best one you can buy because it has nearly all the same features as the more expensive iPad Air — just an older processor. The 6th-gen iPad features a sharp screen, high-end metal design, Apple Pencil support, a Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and a generous 128 GB storage.

2. Apple AirPods with Charging Case

AirPods don't go on sale often, so when they do, you should take advantage of the opportunity. On Amazon, the new AirPods Pro are $15 off (now $235), but if you're not looking to spend more than $200 and you prefer to shop on Walmart, the original AirPods are still a powerful and convenient alternative.

3. Powerbeats3 Wireless Earphones

The Powerbeats3 are one of the most popular models from Beats. Its comfortable earhooks make them optimal for workouts, they have a 12-hour battery life, and when they're close to your Apple device, they'll automatically pair. This particular set on sale is cool because it comes in four bright and eye-catching color options, instantly differentiating them from other earphones.

4. KitchenAid Classic Plus 4.5 Quart Tilt-Head Stand Mixer

There's a reason why a KitchenAid stand mixer is considered a countertop staple. The 4.5-quart bowl is up for any mixing challenge, featuring 10 different speeds to help you mix, knead, and whip up ingredients. If you're a beginner baker on a budget, we recommend this mixer because it's versatile, dependable, and quiet. Compared to other stand mixer models, it has the least powerful motor.

5. Shark Ion Robot Vacuum Cleaning System

Save time and energy on cleaning tasks by getting a robot vacuum. The S86 is one of Shark's older vacuums, which might explain why it's enjoying such a large discount. Still, it's efficient and smart. It's able to navigate around your home thanks to sensitive sensors, and you can schedule cleaning sessions from anywhere with the Robot app. If you have a pet that always sheds hair, this vacuum with powerful suction and an extra-large dust bin is your best bet for cleaning up after it.

6. Google Smart TV Kit

You probably can't go a day without using Google at least once. The Google Home Mini captures the capabilities of Google Assistant and the Google search engine in a tiny device and can accomplish a huge number of tasks, from giving you a preview of your week's schedule to controlling your smart home devices. This Walmart Exclusive pairs it with a TV streamer that lets you stream entertainment right from your phone.

7. Google Smart Light Starter Kit

If you already have a TV streaming device that you love, another Google Home bundle you might like is the starter kit to a smart lighting setup. The GE bulb screws on like a regular light bulb, but is much cooler than your average light bulb. P.L. Travers, the author of the "Mary Poppins" series, lived in a four-story Chelsea home for over 30 years.

The property was even featured in the movie "Saving Mr. Banks," which depicted Travers (played by Emma Thompson) grappling with whether to let Walt Disney (played by Tom Hanks) adapt her books into the now-iconic 1964 film.

'Why won't my flashlight work on my iPhone?': 4 ways to troubleshoot your iPhone flashlight if it isn't working

  • If the flashlight won't work on your iPhone, you can usually troubleshoot the issue in a matter of minutes and get your trusty light shining again.
  • A nearly exhausted battery can prevent an iPhone's flashlight from working, especially if the phone is very warm or cold.
  • If you cannot find your flashlight in your iPhone Control Center, you may have accidentally removed it, but you can quickly add it back in the Settings app.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Even the most prepared people rarely walk around with a flashlight in their pockets, but these days, there's really no reason to when our smartphones have a decent flashlight built right in.

While not bright enough to fill a large room with light or to cast a beam dozens of feet ahead down a hiking trail, an iPhone's flashlight creates more than enough light to help you find your dropped keys, read in a tent, light up the sidewalk ahead of you, or rock out at a concert.

How to troubleshoot your iPhone's flashlight

If your iPhone flashlight isn't working, however, you don't necessarily have to be left in the dark.

Here are four ways to fix an iPhone flashlight that won't turn on.

Charge your iPhone

If your iPhone's battery is almost empty, the flashlight may not work. This is all the more true if the phone is very warm or very cold, conditions that already reduce its proper function. Charge your iPhone, get it down to a moderate temperature, and try again.

Close the Camera app

If your phone's camera app is open, the flashlight won't be able to take control of the LED.

  • On an iPhone X or later, swipe up and hold on the center of the screen, then swipe up to close the Camera app.
  • On an iPhone 8 or earlier, tap the home button twice then swipe up to close the Camera app.

Restart your iPhone

Turning your iPhone off and on again may refresh the software and restore the flashlight.

Hold the Sleep/Wake button on your iPhone until the "Slide to power off" option appears and shut the phone down, or perform a force restart.

Reset your iPhone settings

If a basic restart doesn't do it, reset your phone's settings. You won't lose any data, images, or other stuff, but you may need to reset your wallpaper and alarms and other basics.

1. Launch the "Settings" app, then tap "General."

2. Then tap "Reset," and finally "Reset All Settings."

3. Tap "Confirm."
