Hotel review: I spent a night at MADE, in Manhattan's NoMad neighborhood — here's what I liked most about the understated, boutique hotel

Made NYC 4x3

  • A relatively new spot in Manhattan's NoMad neighborhood, the MADE Hotel is a great spot for travelers who crave convenience, comfort, and creativity while traveling.
  • MADE was designed by a team with a passion for art and style, which can be seen in everything from unique textiles in the guest rooms, to rotating art exhibits lining the lobby walls.
  • Nightly rates start just over $200 for a standard Studio, though prices vary depending on time of year. There are a range of options to fit different budgets; I spent a night in a Creative Suite and loved the unique look and feel of it.

Whether you're visiting New York for the first time or have lived here for years, the city has a vibrant energy you can't ignore. A calm oasis to refresh and recharge is crucial, and I found one at MADE Hotel.

MADE Hotel New York is a relatively new addition to the neighborhood — it opened in 2019 — but has quickly become popular with both tourists and business travelers for good reason: the location is central, the design impressive, and well, it's just cool.

An expression of New York's eclectic culture, MADE features industrial yet simple furnishings and innovative work on display from local artists. With corners spilling over with lush greenery from fresh plants, there's almost a tropical vibe that makes you take a step back and savor things slowly. It's a stark, yet refreshing contrast to the grit and frenetic pace of New York streets outside.

I spent the night in a Creative Suite, comped for review purposes, which typically books for around $320 a night depending on the time of year. Smaller rooms like Studios are more affordable and priced starting around $200 per night.

Keep reading to see why I was so impressed by the MADE Hotel NYC.

You won't find big signs shouting that you've arrived at MADE. Rather, subtle signage showed itself only in the form of a simple MADE logo emblazoned on the sidewalk.

Once I opened the big wooden door, I immediately felt at ease in the casual space. The lobby didn't really feel like a lobby at all, but rather a relaxed communal space.

I smelled the aroma of Paper Coffee, the hotel's coffee shop right away, which was directly to my right when I entered. The space was open, meant to encourage guests to meander freely.

While there was barely a line when I checked in, if there had been, I could have easily sat and admired the pastries (okay, and eaten one) in the coffee shop, or perused the menu at the bar while I waited.

Check-in itself was quick and easy. It was prime time, but there was only one person ahead of me and the whole process only took a few minutes. The hotel concierge was friendly and informative, quick to answer my questions or offer tips about the surrounding area.

I loved the casual, yet inviting vibe, made warmer by lighting, natural wood finishes, and potted plants. The collective look gave the space an aspirational living room vibe, and it felt like the kind of space my chicest friend would design. The room was full, with many people working on computers, or ordering small bites from the bar. There was also a nice outdoor terrace filled with picnic-style tables and plants. I'd surely have spent some time out there if it was a nicer day.

Lobby walls also acted as art exhibits. When I visited, the "On, Line" exhibit explored digital mediums and unique expressions of lines. Art typically rotates every two to three months, curated by MADE's own art consultant, who also leads a calendar of art and culture events, from meditation to painting.

After getting off the elevator and moving through the dim hallway, I arrived at my room — a Creative Suite

It was clean and tidy, yet colorful.  The open layout felt particularly luxurious for New York, and I had more than enough space to move comfortably. Long windows flooded my room with natural light, brightening the space even more. Instead of a closet, there was exposed, bronze shelving.

Exposed red piping and a fire sprinkler was visible along the ceiling, which was actually a bit of an eyesore in comparison to the carefully crafted look of the room, but was easy to ignore.

The suite struck me as a good option for those coming to New York for a special occasion, on an extended stay, or need to spend a good amount of time in my room. With a sitting area and bathtub, the higher price tag still seemed reasonable compared to pricier hotels in the area.

Though, if I was traveling alone or just wanted a cozy launchpad to explore the city, I'd probably go for the more budget-friendly studio, which is just as design-forward as larger options.

I liked the unique and functional desk, which could be pulled down or folded up when not in use, which was a nice way to keep the space open.

The minibar was stocked with local, artisanal (and pricey) treats like Hal's potato chips and Cactus Candy. I was surprised to find a Byredo candle in the minibar, though I suppose that speaks to the experience MADE creates for its guests — something special but comfortable.

I also appreciated other small, thoughtful details such as an arts and culture magazine and a retro-looking Revo SuperConnect deluxe table radio, which gave the space added character and something to play with right off the bat.

The highlight of the room, however, was the incredibly comfortable mattress. My room, like all at MADE, had a Leesa hybrid mattress, which also happens to be Insider Picks' favorite mattress. Laying down on the cloud-like surface, I was lulled to sleep by the sounds of the city. Though if you are sensitive to sound or a light sleeper, you may want to ask the front desk for a quiet location. Similarly, I also heard noise from the rooftop bar.

The bathroom was small, with grey tile walls, a stone sink, and bronze fixtures that set a soothing tone. There was a bathtub (a perk of the suite) that felt like an unnecessary, but lovely indulgence, equipped with two showerheads. My bath and shower was elevated by the addition of MOMO shampoo, conditioner, and shower gel, which felt luxurious, rather than cheap hotel throwaways.

Though, some features weren't totally practical.

The sink was shallow, which made water splash out while washing my hands. The mirror was also just a sliver, and not wide enough to actually get a good look at myself. Though this was likely a design feature of the Creative Suite, as I was able to take a peek at a standard room, and mirrors in those bathrooms were far more traditional, and useful.

During my stay, I was able to compare my experience against a cheaper Studio room.

While the space was more humble, it boasted all of the same amenities that I had in my larger suite. I particularly liked how the lofted bed offered some storage beneath it.

The Studio room felt small, but not cramped. Sized between 185 to 200 square feet, it was actually pretty spacious by New York bedroom standards. If you're looking for a cheaper price and can compromise on space, it's a good option that's both affordable and sophisticated.

MADE's lobby bar is open from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. (and 2 a.m. on Friday), making it a convenient spot to grab a breakfast bite before a busy day or craft cocktail in the evening. There's a small menu of bites too, such as avocado toast, Cacio e Pepe, and a classic burger.

On the top floor, don't miss Good Behavior, the hotel's rooftop bar known for cheeky tiki cocktails. Open year-round, the sun-drenched space offers great views of New York City inside and out. They also host fun events; during my stay they were setting up for an alien-themed Halloween party, attracting New Yorkers in addition to hotel guests.

For something more mellow, head to the patio on the second floor. Food and drink aren't served, but it's a nice open space that only hotel guests can use, and easily accessible from the lobby. If I had been here on a summer day, I would have found it a great place to relax in the sun.

MADE's prime NoMad location means you're a short walk to Madison Square Park for people-watching with a burger from the original Shake Shack.

It's also well-located for sightseeing: the Empire State Building is also a quick walk away.

When it's time to eat, try anything from fast-casual spots like Bondi sushi to the experiential Italian food hall Eataly, or a classic New York haunt like The Smith.

Located near most major subway lines, MADE's location is convenient but with more of a neighborhood feel than you'll find in tourist-trodden Midtown Manhattan.

With a 4.5-star rating on Trip Advisor and a 9.0 on Booking.com, reviewers generally have positive things to say about MADE.

Most comment on the friendly staff, fun rooftop bar, comfortable bed, and overall "cool" vibe.

One of the more common complaints was that furnishings proved more aesthetic than practical.  Additionally, many reviewers commented on the small size of the bathrooms. If you are traveling with another person, this is definitely something to consider. Still, MADE NYC makes the cut as one of Booking.com's top picks in New York.

Who stays here: Business travelers, families and couples, and creative-minded travelers.

We like: The leafy, art-filled lobby. You'll want to grab a coffee, melt into one of the couches, and get some work done in this inviting space.

We love (don't miss this feature!): The design-forward aesthetic, super comfortable Leesa mattress, and the culture calendar, which is filled with all kinds of cool events and shouldn't be overlooked.

We think you should know: There's a $25 daily curation fee that gives you a free beverage, Liberty Cruise line tickets, and access to bikes each day. This has become somewhat of a norm in boutique properties like MADE, but is not a fixture of all New York hotels and can drive up the overall price. It is a pet-friendly building too, but you'll have to pay a one-time $100 pet fee for your furry friend to join you.

We'd do this differently next time: Stay on a lower floor. I like to go to bed early, and the 17th floor was a bit loud as it's directly under Good Behavior, the hotel's rooftop bar.

With a prime New York City location and in a space focused on art and design, MADE offers an exciting, untraditional escape for business and creative types.

It's cool without feeling pretentious, and the range of rooms offers affordable options for multiple budgets. MADE is a comfortable oasis in a busy city (no doubt due to the plethora of gorgeous plants) with rooms as creative as the hotel's own art-minded ethos, making it a perfect counterpart for New York's boundless energy.

Berlin will at the Hilton

  • After the Berlin Wall came down on November 9, 1989, pieces of it scattered around the world.
  • These photos show the surprising places the pieces ended up, from the grounds of the Vatican to a bathroom in Las Vegas.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

Three decades after the fall of the Berlin Wall, which once separated East Berlin from West Berlin, hundreds of the portions of the barrier stand scattered in countries throughout the world.

In fact, more pieces of it actually reside in other countries than in Germany itself, according to The Guardian.

We've put together a collection of images that show where pieces of the wall stand today and how they look in different countries, from a segment gifted to Nelson Mandela in South Africa to a massive display in Los Angeles.

Barneys shutting down is 'surreal' but 'not surprising,' says the millennial CEO at the head of a luxury eyewear brand that Jeff Bezos and Brad Pitt have been spotted wearing

Eyewear Barneys

  • Garrett Leight, the founder, CEO, and Creative Director of luxury eyewear company Garrett Leight California Optics, used to sell his products in Barneys.
  • Barneys was one of his first introductions to the mass retail market, and Leight said it was "surreal" that the retailer was closing down.
  • But at the same time, Leight said he wasn't suprised. He said the retailer failed to establish an "identity" to connect with younger buyers, and that this should be a lesson for other big department stores.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

If anyone is feeling the impact of Barneys' recent shutdown, it's Garrett Leight, the 35-year-old luxury eyewear designer who sold his brand, Garrett Leight California Optics (GLCO), at the once-esteemed retailer.

"Barneys is such a big part of my life," Leight said in an interview with Business Insider. "When I launched [GLCO], it was like, 'we want to open in Colette and Barneys,' and that was all."

Leight's father, Larry Leight, is the founder of the high-end eyewear brand Oliver Peoples, which also sells in Barneys. Leight recalls that, while growing up in Venice, California, he would be surrounded by the iconic black bags and watch as his father conducted business with the retailer.

If anything, it was a dream come true once Leight's own eyewear brand (which has been sported by household names, from Jeff Bezos to Brad Pitt) finally made its first shipment to the department store. Leight's eyewear brand launched in 2009 and officially debuted at Barneys in 2011.

"There's this whole intimate experience about opening [in] Barneys, and it was like the very first thing I shipped," he said. "It was such an important part of our brand."

Leight, like many others in the retail sphere, is still shocked that Barneys is set to close its doors for good. The entrepreneur called Barneys one of his first introductions into the luxury retail market, a sentiment that's true for many others in the industry.

Garrett Leight + Elena Doukas

"Surreal ... but not surprising"

"It's a bit surreal," Leight said when we asked about his reaction to the sale and shutdown news. "But I mean, it's not surprising, you know — I think they just didn't do the right things to stick around."

The famed department store, which was once a symbol of splendor and wealth, filed for bankruptcy on October 16. It is set to be sold to the investment firm B. Riley Financial and Authentic Brands Group — owner of brands like Nine West and Volcom — who have filed to purchase both Barneys' name and assets.

In the end, Barneys is selling for only $271 million, with all its remaining stores set to close.

"This development is a positive step forward for Barneys and a strong recognition of the value of Barneys' assets and brand name," a Barneys spokesperson said in a statement to Business Insider. "We are working hard to achieve a successful sale process that will preserve the integrity of this incredible brand and ultimately benefit our employees, customers, vendors, and other business partners."

As Leight remembers his time spent working with Barneys, he said part of the store's downfall was that they failed to establish themselves as a brand to the younger generations — himself included.

"I'm not really sure who the voice was or what the voice was [of Barneys]. I don't really know what they stand for. Even in leaving, they just made an Instagram post, and it just had a hashtag on it," Leight said. "Today, millennials and Gen-Z — we want to connect with something. We want to know who we're supporting, and I just don't know what [Barneys'] identity was."

Magician Alchemist GLCO Garrett Leight

Modern consumers wants brands to have a "face"

On the same note, Leight knows that it is difficult for these large retailers to find ways to connect with younger audiences, especially in the digital era. He said that consumers today are looking for the "face" or "message" of what these big name brands stand for, so that the young consumers know and understand exactly what they are supporting.

"It's not easy," he said. "[But] you've gotta dedicate some effort — both financially and creatively — to creating something that buyers [and] consumers can connect with."

If anything, Leight noted, Barneys' bleak outcome should be a lesson for other department stores on how to survive in a new era, with a new generation of consumers.

"Their competitors need to make sure that they're doing the right thing," Leight said. "Or they're next."

Hotel review: I spent a weekend at the brand-new Guild Hotel in San Diego, part of the Marriott Bonvoy collection — here's why I plan to go back

The Guild San Diego 4x3

  • Downtown San Diego is chockablock with hotels — and tourists — but The Guild San Diego is a new property that offers a real respite from the crowds with a peaceful courtyard and charming, historic details.
  • Formerly a 1920s-era Army-Navy YMCA, the building was thoughtfully reimagined as a tribute to San Diego, while delivering on the style and upscale decor expected from a Tribute Portfolio hotel within the Marriott Bonvoy family of hotels.
  • With rooms starting at $170 a night, there are certainly cheaper hotels in the city, but you'll be hard-pressed to beat the intimate vibe at this price point. I spent a night in an Artisan Room and think it's worth the money for the overall experience.

Ships have been sailing in and out of San Diego's bay since the 16th century, but it's easy to forget the past when staying in vibrant, revived, and bustling downtown.

The Guild San Diego, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel, is a newer addition to the neighborhood, housed in a century-old Armed Services YMCA. Yet rather than erasing the building's past, the owners have lovingly embraced its former life in an effort to honor San Diego's rich maritime heritage.

Ornate, Italian Renaissance Revival exteriors were maintained, while run-down dormitory-style interiors were totally transformed. In fact, standing in the lobby now, it's hard to believe that this former Y was once a low-budget hostel. But before it fell into disrepair, in the 1920s, millions of servicemen and women passed through its doors for recreational dances, pool laps, and runs on the track.

Now, it's a 162-room luxury boutique hotel from Marriott Bonvoy, with a tranquil courtyard, two-bedroom penthouse with a private rooftop, and an urban garden for all to enjoy.

I spent two nights in an Artisan Room on a recent busy weekend and loved the witty nods to yesteryear with cozy but modern velvet furnishings, and an intimate, friendly vibe that extended all the way from the front steps to the bar and restaurant.

But what I really loved was the subtle balance the hotel strikes, while still being located within the heart of downtown San Diego. There are lots of corporate big-box hotels here, and it can be hard to find a middle ground between modern and intimate at a reasonable price point.

With rates starting as low as $170 per night, and the opportunity to use and redeem Marriott points, I'd happily return to this rehabbed Y, where a late breakfast in the pale pink courtyard felt far more like the south of France than San Diego.

Keep reading to see why I was so impressed by The Guild San Diego, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel

SEE ALSO: Hotel review: Le Méridien San Francisco is a great option for comfort, value, and excellent last-minute deals

SEE ALSO: Hotel review: I spent a night at 1 Hotel Brooklyn Bridge and loved the waterfront location, city views, and how my room embraced nature

I pulled up to the building on a Friday evening, and it definitely looked like the hot place to be.

Lots of dressed-up couples were headed up the stairs while I, in my wrinkled car trip attire, and accompanied by a Maltipoo and 10-year-old child, felt instantly frumpy in comparison.

But my attention soon shifted to something far more impressive, the buildings' strong bones. With rich columns, arched windows, and a rustic exterior, the look was classic Renaissance Revival. It was clear the hotel's renovation had taken painstaking care to preserve such intricate architectural elements.

I opted out of the expensive valet service ($50) and parked around the corner on India St. in a lot that was $25 for overnight parking.

Inside, the look was both modern and historic, with cozy velvet banquettes and little nooks filling the high-ceilinged space.

There was no wait for check-in, and the friendly staff gave me a rundown on hotel features, and also tipped me off to a card in my room that could fill me in on the full story of the building's history.

After a brief tour of the lobby, where I clocked a sleek onyx-topped communal table and the entrance to the central courtyard restaurant, Luca, I was directed to my room on the lobby level.

As we walked down the hall to our room, I peered into the romantically-lit courtyard that was opposite it and made a mental note to check it out next.

But first the room: all first-floor rooms are called Artisan Rooms, and feature, like the lobby, rich velvet touches. In my room that meant floor-to-ceiling curtains hiding a wonderful secret: impressive arched windows.

The feel was decidedly cozy and compact, with warm retro touches. Artisan Rooms have remarkably high ceilings, which makes them feel massive, even though they're pretty intimately scaled. A bright white bath stocked great custom Maison Margiela Replica amenities (the fragrance is "Jazz Club," with notes of "heady cocktails and cigars" —they're not wrong.

Other unexpected and appreciated touches included a flat iron as well as a hairdryer in the bathroom, a handheld steamer rather than an iron in the little wardrobe, and a Netflix-equipped TV.

Being on the lobby floor, we were quite close to the street and late at night, we definitely heard the noise of the San Diego weekend crowd. But surprisingly, drawing the heavy curtain took care of much of the noise.

If I were a light sleeper, I might opt for a higher room (with lower ceilings), but since I'm not, I'd gladly take that fabulous, large window and sky-high ceiling.

I also thought perhaps I had been placed in the first-floor room since my dog accompanied me to this pet-friendly hotel, but the concierge told me later that the $100 non-refundable pet cleaning deposit, for any length of stay, covers all dogs for all rooms. So if you have a special request of where you'd like to be, make it.

I ate at Luca, the Mediterranean-inspired restaurant when The Guild first opened and thought the central courtyard was a lovely focal point for the whole hotel.

I was glad to return on this visit to take a closer look at its potted palms and peach-hued walls. The feeling was hardly California cool, but rather, south of France sophistication.

At night there was a warm glow from the custom outdoor fireplaces and ambient lighting from the city, while in the morning it felt bright and resort-like.

As the hotel restaurant was located only steps from my room, I felt totally relaxed coming in without worrying too much about hair and makeup. Astro, my Maltipoo, was welcome, too.

If you don't feel like lingering, there's complimentary coffee in the lobby until 9 a.m.

The Guild Bar, just opposite Luca's entrance, was also a great place to start the evening with cocktails that acknowledged the hotel's historic roots, such as the Guild Old Fashioned (Elijah Craig bourbon, blood orange liquor, Luxardo, demerara syrup, orange bitters). On the evenings I was there, people lounged with a drink in discreet little lounge areas and at the bar.

One of the most surprising features of the hotel was its Grace Garden, a little oasis behind the hotel that was fully enclosed (and not accessible from the street). It felt totally protected and would be a great place to hold an event.

It was formerly a basketball court (keep an eye out for hints of the original flooring), with an elevated running track that's still intact.

In the basement, vintage pictures from the 1920s line a wall opposite the former swimming pool, which is now a ballroom-multipurpose room. There's even a photo of the original swimming pool, which is a great touch.

Nearby, a surprisingly large workout room houses Peloton bikes, weight machines, and is decorated with vintage boxing gloves for another fun reminder of the former life as a Y.

The Guild also holds partnerships with businesses in the neighborhood, which comes in handy if you need spa services, or for tips on local happy hours, exclusive to hotel guests.

The Guild is close — walking distance close — to anything you want to do in downtown San Diego.

Massive, historic Balboa Park with all the museums of the Prado and the gorgeous Spreckells Organ Pavilion is a quick Uber drive northeast (walkable if you wish).

Broadway Pier is a straight shot west from the hotel. From there, you can walk to the Star of India/Maritime Museum, the Port of San Diego (this is the perfect spot to stay before and/or after a cruise from San Diego's port), and catch the ferry to Coronado, too.

All the great restaurants of Little Italy are a quick walk to the north up India Street, Copley Symphony Hall is nearby, and the bustling Gaslamp Quarter and Petco Park are to the south.

There's no need to have a car here, unless you arrived in one, as I did.

Since The Guild is fairly new, the fact that there are only around 40 reviews on Trip Advisor isn't surprising.

Reviews are favorable overall, with a score of four out of five stars. I noticed that guests were polarized by the very aspects I liked about the hotel. Where I loved the simple elegance of the rooms, some negative reviewers wished for built-in closets, or a mini-bar or fridge. Several guests took issue with the fact that there's no pool in the hotel. This wasn't important to me, but I could understand why that would be desired in sunny San Diego.

Noise was an issue for guests staying in the Artisan Rooms, but as I noted, I'd happily close the curtain to enjoy those high ceilings, and accept a little noise for more indoor ambiance. But, to each their own.

Those who love a hotel with historic bones and decor loved the sofas, bar, and courtyard as I did. And no one could fault the ideal location or the friendly and accommodating staff.

Read reviews, compare prices, and book on Trip Advisor

Who stays here: Staycationers who want a little fun in downtown's walkable restaurant scene; party-goers using the courtyard as an event space; tourists eager to see downtown San Diego; business visitors who would rather eschew big box hotels for a more intimate stay with a European feel. And of course, Marriott loyalists.

We like: The stories of local artisans in each room, and the warm, retro design, which was a great foil to all the beachy decor you get in San Diego.

We love (don't miss this feature!): Don't miss a morning latte or evening cocktail in the gorgeous courtyard restaurant, Luca. I don't think there's a more transportive place in all of San Diego.

We think you should know: Downtown gets noisy, and if you love a high ceiling, you might be opting for high decibel level in Artisan rooms, too. Plan accordingly, especially if you're a light sleeper.

We'd do this differently next time: I'd come back on a romantic weekend (as I saw a few couples doing). And although my dog and child were absolutely welcome and loved, this feels more like a playground for adults.

The Guild Hotel San Diego, A Tribute Portfolio Hotel from Marriott, is for those who love grand, early 20th-century revival architecture. It's also a great place to stay when you want to pretend you've whisked yourself off to the South of France, without the jet lag.

The hotel has done a fabulous job of honoring its history through great design, preservation of certain rooms, photography, and a strong overarching narrative. All that work might be wasted on someone who doesn't love a good dose of history or architecture.

But getting a thoughtful, fun, and useful gift can be easy. In fact, it doesn't even require you to leave Amazon. Below, I've rounded up 21 gift ideas for teen girls in your life that you can find there. As someone who was once a teen girl, and who has teen sisters, I feel confident in saying this is a good jumping-off point.

Shop the best gifts for teen girls:

A cool new Popsocket

Popsockets, beyond making it easier to hold or prop up their phone, are a great way to add personality to the tech they use every day.

The complete works of Jane Austen

Jane Austen deserves her spot in the Mount Rushmore of authors — and she has a particular talent for speaking to teens about the humor, nuances, and absurdity of navigating life and love. If you're looking to get books that she can enjoy now and again in ten years, Austen is one of the best picks possible.

A hair towel that cuts down on drying time

This hair towel can cut in half the amount of time it takes for hair to dry. It also helps protect the hair during its weakened state while wet. If they've ever fought frizzy hair, this and a silk pillowcase may be especially thoughtful gifts.

A personalized zodiac necklace

Zodiac signs have become increasingly popular in recent years, as has the mainstream interest in horoscopes and astrological personality types. If they're into the topic, or you just want to find a small way of personalizing an affordable gift, pick up a gold-dipped zodiac necklace that they can wear with anything.

An Echo Dot with a clock

The Echo Dot is popular on Amazon for a few reasons, and one is how compact it is. They can stack it on top of a pile of books or on their nightstand, use it as a speaker or an alarm clock, and get access to all the capabilities of Alexa (weather updates, recipes, music, news, connections to other smart devices). It also has a decent speaker.

An instant camera and some film

Maybe because it's now possible to document and curate everything just-so online, but the spontaneity and authenticity of instant cameras have experienced a rise in popularity in recent years. If it's a comfortable purchase, they'll probably get a lot of use out of the $70-something camera. It comes in fun colors, and they can hang the pictures up around their room. Pick up some film so they can get started right away.

The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Whether she saw the Ruth Bader Ginsburg documentary (which this was featured in), considers RBG amongst her favorite celebrities, or she may appreciate a keepsake that focuses on an empowered woman in history, this is a great gift that combines fun, creativity, and education.

A powerful portable charger

Anyone with a phone can see the convenience of an external battery, and this one happens to be our pick for the best portable charger iPhone users can buy. Beyond convenience, it's also good for safety when she's out and about with friends or traveling.

The sequel novel of "To All the Boys I've Loved Before"

Unless you've been living under a rock, the cultural phenomenon of the book-turned-Netflix-movie "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" has probably touched your life. If they've seen the movie and already read the first book, this is the sequel. It's also being turned into a Netflix movie

A bunch of Korean sheet masks

Few things are as fun as lounging around with a decadent sheet mask slapped across your face. It's also an affordable gift that gives outsized fun to the recipient, and a great addition to sleepovers with friends.

Really nice new bedding

We recommend Brooklinen often, and for good reason. We think they make the best high-end sheets at the best price, and most of the Insider Picks team sleeps with Brooklinen on their own beds. If she may appreciate a more grown-up gift, this is a good one.

Hanging glass terrariums for their room

A living green thing is nice in any space, especially in the form of a pretty hanging terrarium like this. The set includes three types: a water drop, diamond, and triangle shape. Plus, you can help her hang them in her room.

A projector the size of a soda can

Anker's Nebula Capsule is tiny but mighty. It's the size of a soda can, weighs only one pound, and has a quiet and continuous playtime of four hours. It'll take movie nights up a notch, and they can take it with them on trips easily. Find a full review here.

A US Women's National Soccer Team shirt

The United States women's national soccer team is the most successful team in women's soccer in the world. In 2019, they made waves for earning their fourth FIFA Women's World Cup title and for putting pressure on US Soccer to support equal pay. Whether she's into sports, the USWNT, or feels invested in the fight for equal pay, this is a great option.

Wireless headphones with up to 40 hours of battery life

Beats Solo3 headphones are good for zoning out to music, studying, and blocking out the noise on family road trips. They have good sound, up to 40 hours of battery life, and five minutes of charging equals three hours of playback.

Foreo's cult-favorite Luna 2 cleansing device gently and effectively cleans with thin, antimicrobial silicone touchpoints, and claims to remove 99.5% of dirt and makeup residue without irritating the skin. Majesty 140 profile

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show has established itself as the biggest in-water boat show in the world.

With credentials like that, it's no surprise that the largest and most lavish yachts from shipyards across the world flocked to South Florida in early November for a chance to entice over 100,000 boat showgoers for the event's 60th year.

The yacht that impressed the most of all was Majesty 140.

The over 140-foot superyacht built in Dubai by Gulf Craft, in addition to being named best in show by NBC Sports, sold for around $20 million on closing day, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel.

Keep reading for a closer look at the "best in show" superyacht.

I designed my own men's overcoat at Indochino — here's what it looks like, how it fits, and why I recommend custom clothing to everyone

Indochino Outerwear

  • Made-to-measure menswear brand Indochino recently added outerwear to its product offerings.
  • Priced at $295 to $445, the Indochino outerwear collection includes a variety of overcoats, mac coats, and trench coats. For a limited time, you can save $50 on all overcoats during Indochino's Black Friday special.
  • I got fitted in the store and designed my own custom overcoat. The fit turned out to be spot-on and the personalized touches make it a coat that stands out in a crowd — in a good way.
  • Instead of ruining your formal looks with puffer coats and ski jackets, Indochino's outerwear collection is a great way to stay warm and in style this fall and winter.

It's a chilly fall morning, and you're getting dressed for another day at the office. You pick out the perfect wool suit and pair it with your best dress shirt, tie, and dress shoes. You're ready to go; all you need to do is put on your jacket. You reach in the closet and grab a hooded puffer coat or a technical ski jacket to block out the chill. And just like that, your impeccably stylish formal outfit is ruined by bright colors and performance materials.

Unfortunately, this is the fate of many men who dress formally, whether on a regular basis for their careers or on occasion. That's why every man should own a piece of formal outerwear to pair with his suits and ties — and Indochino is now one of the best places to get one that's perfect for you.

The popular menswear brand recently launched its first-ever collection of customizable outerwear including overcoats, trench coats, and mac coats.

Indochino Outerwear

How to make your own custom Indochino coat

There are two ways to go about getting fitted for Indochino. You can follow an in-depth, step-by-step video guide to accurately measure yourself at home, or you can visit one of Indochino's many showrooms in the United States and Canada to get measured by a professional.

Once you have your measurements, you can complete the ordering process online. I decided to go to Indochino's Financial District, Manhattan, location to get measured since it's a short walk away from the Insider Inc. office.

In addition to being made specifically for your body, the customization process includes options like choosing the lapel style, lining color, buttons, and adding a monogram. By creating a custom coat, you'll stand out from everyone else wearing off-the-rack garments. After I got measured, I ordered a double-breasted Heartford Quilted Camel Overcoat with a burgundy interior lining and my name monogrammed onto the collar.

Indochino Outerwear

How it fits and what it's like to wear

My coat took about two weeks to arrive, which is expected for a custom garment. My first impression was that it's a well-made, high-quality coat. The 90% wool/10% cashmere blend is super soft to the touch, and it has a substantial weight to it. It's far from a cheap fast-fashion overcoat that will only last you one or two seasons.

Indochino Outerwear

When I first tried the coat on, it fit me perfectly. Indochino does offer free alterations if you need to make some adjustments, but I had no issues or complaints. It's worth noting that overcoats are designed to be worn over a suit jacket, so if you try it on over just a T-shirt, you'll have the impression that it's too big.

In my opinion, the double-breasted design I chose lends itself more to formal than casual, so I wore it with a T.M. Lewin Infinity Suit, a Rhone Commuter Dress Shirt, a Jos. A. Bank tie, and Bonobos Percy Wingtip Shoes. I got several compliments on my way to work and while shooting this photo set on Wall Street — and there are plenty of guys in Downtown Manhattan going for the same exact look.

Indochino Outerwear

If you're not going to wear your overcoat with formal attire, I'd recommend pairing it with a chunky cable-knit sweater or a cashmere turtleneck for a more casual look. I found the coat to be exceptionally warm for this time of year, and I'll likely wear it into the winter. However, I'll definitely pick a warmer coat in my closet when temperatures dip well below freezing.

The bottom line

Priced from $295 to $445, with mac coats being the least expensive and overcoats being the most expensive, Indochino's outerwear collection has pieces for a range of styles and budgets. I do believe that overcoats will be the most popular variation, and luckily, they're on sale. For a limited time, you can save $50 on all overcoats during Indochino's Black Friday special. With the discount, the $445 Heartford Quilted Camel Overcoat I got comes down to $395.

If you've ever worn any other custom clothing from Indochino, you can expect the same level of quality in the materials and production and the same level of accuracy in the fitting. If you're a first-time customer, you should shop with confidence knowing that you'll get a quality garment in return. I discovered Indochino when the brand released chinos last year, and I've been a big fan ever since.

As we lean further into fall and soon winter, you don't want to be that guy wearing the wrong jacket with your suit or going without one for the sake of looking good. Indochino custom outerwear is the way to go.

Shop all custom Indochino outerwear now, starting at $295

How to zoom in and out in Photoshop in 3 different ways

0
0

Photoshop Logo Website

  • You can zoom in Photoshop using the Zoom Tool, which will let you zoom in and out of your canvas freely.
  • To change between zooming in and out, you can use the tool options at the top of the screen, or zoom out by pressing and holding the Alt or Option key while using the tool.
  • You can also use the mouse's scroll wheel, or edit the zoom percentage reading at the bottom of the Photoshop screen.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

If you need to zoom in or out of your image in Photoshop to get a better view, or perform detailed editing work, you can use the Zoom tool.

This isn't the same as using the Crop tool — when you zoom, you're only changing how the image is magnified on your screen, not how big the final image is.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Adobe Photoshop (From $129.99 at Best Buy)

Macbook Pro (From $1,299 at Best Buy)

Microsoft Surface 2 (From $1,999 at Best Buy)

How to zoom in Photoshop

Use the Zoom tool

1. Select the Zoom tool either by clicking it in the Tools Palette on the left side of the screen — its icon looks like a magnifying glass — or by pressing Z on your keyboard.

2. To zoom in, click on the part of the image you want to see in more detail. Each time you click, you'll zoom in one level closer, until you reach Photoshop's max zoom.

zoom 1

3. To zoom out, click the Zoom Out option in the Tool Options bar at the top of the screen (or bottom if you're using Photoshop Elements), which looks like a magnifying glass with a minus in it, and then click the image again. Remember to switch back to the Zoom In option when you're done.

zoom 2

4. As an alternative way of zooming out, you can press and hold the Alt key (or Option key if you're on a Mac) on the keyboard when you use the Zoom tool on the image.

Use the mouse scroll wheel

You don't have to select the Zoom tool to change the image's magnification — if your mouse has a scroll wheel, you can zoom in and out while using any tool.

1. Place the mouse pointer at the spot in the image where you want to zoom in or out.

2. Press and hold the Alt key on a PC (or Option key if you're on a Mac) on the keyboard, and then spin the scroll wheel to zoom in or out.

Use the zoom percentage box

This method of zooming is a bit slower, but allows you to get more precise.

1. At the bottom of the Photoshop screen is a small box with a percentage in it. This percentage represents your current zoom level.

2. You can click on the box to edit the percentage by typing in a new zumber. The higher the number, the more zoomed in you are.

How to crop an image in Photoshop in a few simple steps

0
0

photoshop

  • You can crop an image in Photoshop by using the Crop tool, which is one of the basic tools in your Tool Palette.
  • Use the Tool Options to specify details like the photo's final aspect ratio and orientation.
  • Drag and resize the crop box, then click the checkmark (or press Enter) when you're done.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Photoshop makes it easy to crop your images. This is a powerful tool for changing the way a shot is framed — you can use the Crop tool to trim away distracting elements in a photo, or to "zoom in" on the most interesting details.

It can also change the aspect ratio of a photo, or even flip the orientation from portrait to landscape (or vice-versa).

Here's how to use it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Adobe Photoshop (From $129.99 at Best Buy)

Macbook Pro (From $1,299 at Best Buy)

Microsoft Surface 2 (From $1,999 at Best Buy)

How to crop an image in Photoshop

1. Open the Photoshop app on your Mac computer or PC

2. Click the Crop tool in the Tools Palette on the left side of the screen — it looks like two right angles overlapping — or press the keyboard shortcut, C. You should see the crop box appear over your image.

crop 1

2. If you want the final image to have a specific aspect ratio, you can specify that in the Tools Options at the top of the screen (or bottom if you're using Photoshop Elements). You can pick a preset aspect ratio, or click "Clear" (or "No Restriction") to make the crop box "free form," so you can adjust it manually with your mouse.

crop 2

3. Use the crop handles in the corners or sides of the crop box to change the size of your crop. If you set a specific aspect ratio, the box will maintain that ratio as you make it larger or smaller. If you cleared the aspect ratio, then you can change the width and height of the box separately.

4. You can also drag the crop box around the image by clicking and dragging inside the crop box.

5. To flip the orientation of the crop from portrait to landscape (or vice versa), click the double arrows in the Tools Options menu.

6. When the image is cropped to your satisfaction, click the checkmark at the top of the screen, or press Enter.

NOW WATCH: Why it's so hard for planes to land on water

The best base layers for men

0
0
  • Good base layers are the first line of defense in any layering system, which also includes an insulating layer and a shell layer that protects against rain, snow, and wind.
  • These are our five favorite picks for the best men's base layers you can buy.

Everyone knows that if you want to stay warm in the winter, you need to layer properly. Every good layering system starts with a set of base layers, which, although thin and light, play an important role in keeping us comfortable in the outdoors when it gets cold. Good base layers not only provide extra warmth, they also wick moisture away from the body, which is crucial for keeping the chill at bay, even on the coldest of days.

Based on our usage experience and research, these are the best base layer tops and bottoms that will help you stay warmer in the outdoors this winter.

Here are our top picks for the best base layers for men:

Smartwool

Made from soft, comfortable merino wool, these base layers are not only warm, they're durable too. That makes them great for travel, long days on the ski hill, or just lounging around at home. They even come in three different colors for those who want something other than basic black or white.

This also has a matching bottom if you are looking for a complete set.

Helly Hansen

If there is an outdoor brand that knows a thing or two about keeping us warm during the winter, it's Helly Hansen. The company has been making cold-weather gear for more than 140 years and its base layers are some of the best in the business. Pair the Lifa crew top with the matching base layer pant and you have a winning combination for any active outdoor winter pursuits.

Icebreaker

As the name implies, these base layers are built for everyday use, meaning they are just as handy for cold commutes as they are for winter hikes or a weekend on the slopes. Made with a blend of stretch fabrics and merino wool, they're designed for maximum comfort and versatility no matter where you end up wearing them.

This also has a matching bottom if you are looking for a complete set.

Under Armour

Under Armour's mid-weight base layers include plenty of features for those cold-weather workouts. For instance, the fabrics not only have four-way stretch properties that won't inhibit motion in any way, but they're also designed to avoid collecting odors. Throw in the ability to quickly wick perspiration away from the body, keeping you warmer for extended periods as a result, and you'll quickly find yourself running out of excuses for why you're not exercising in the winter.

This also has a matching bottom if you are looking for a complete set.

ColdPruf

If you're looking for protection from the cold that is easy on the wallet, it's tough to beat base layers from ColdPruf. These tops and bottoms offer excellent performance at a great price, making them a great choice for outdoor enthusiasts on a budget.

This also has a matching bottom if you are looking for a complete set.

'Can you download from Hulu?': You can with the Hulu app and a No Ads subscription — here's how to do it

iphone Hulu app

While most of us are connected to the Internet pretty much 24 hours a day, there are times when being online isn't an option, like flying with an airline that doesn't offer in-flight Wi-Fi or while on vacation in an area with low, or no, coverage.

That means that if you want to watch some TV shows or movies on Hulu to entertain you on these occasions, you'll need to download them so you can access them while offline.

Hulu only introduced the downloading option in October 2019, and unfortunately, it's still only available to subscribers on the $11.99 per month No Ads plan — subscribers to the basic $5.99 per month plan aren't eligible.

You can download up to 25 titles at a time across up to five different devices, and they'll stay on your device for 30 days before expiring, giving you plenty to watch in the meantime.

Here's how to download movies and shows on the Hulu app.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Hulu (No Ads) subscription (From $11.99/month)

How to download on Hulu for offline viewing

1. On your device's home screen, tap the Hulu icon to open the app.

2. Since the downloading feature is still new and there aren't many titles available, it makes sense to go directly to the "Downloadable" section listed at the top of the "Search" menu.

  • To find this option, simply tap the "Search" option in the menu bar at the bottom of your screen, then tap "Downloadable."

Can you download from Hulu

3. Tap on the TV show or movie you wish to download.

4. Tap the small icon next to the episode or movie title you want to download, which contains a downward-pointing arrow inside of a circle.

Can you download from Hulu

5. Your file will then begin downloading. Once finished, you'll be able to access your downloads by tapping the "Downloads" option on the bottom menu bar.

It should be noted that downloading isn't available on desktop via the Hulu.com website.

15 cruelty-free beauty gifts to give for the holidays — from limited-edition makeup sets to skin-care essentials

0

Cruelty free beauty sets

  • If you're looking to give someone a beauty or skin-care gift this holiday, you might want to consider going cruelty-free.
  • None of the products in this list have been tested on animals, nor do they contain any animal-derived ingredients. However, some of the brands we've included make products that aren't 100% vegan (we've noted which ones below).
  • From skin-care and hair-care bundles to sultry highlighter sets, here's what we recommend buying for anyone on your list.

Through trial and error, I've learned that beauty and skin-care gifts are almost always a safe bet — whether your loved one is a skin-care expert, makeup novice, or somewhere in between. Even as a well-adjusted adult, I still revel in unwrapping cosmetics and skin-care gifts around my family's Christmas tree.

However, many beauty brands still use animal testing on their products. Globally, over 115 million animals undergo experiments each year, and according to Cruelty Free International, that figure is growing — even as more shoppers opt for ethically-made products

The good news is that there are tons of cruelty-free beauty products that make great presents. From soothing lip scrubs to personalized bundles, all of these gifts are vegan and cruelty-free (though if a brand also makes products that are not vegan, we've noted it below). And for added assurance, everything on this list is either Leaping Bunny or PETA certified.

See our picks for cruelty-free beauty gifts, below:

JBL

  • Teens can be a daunting demographic to buy for — they're often the first to forecast the next "Big Thing" but also don't have the expendable income to buy everything they'd like to have.
  • To help lessen the stress of shopping for them, I've rounded up 40+ solid gifts they'll love to receive.
  • After more ideas and inspiration? Check out all of Insider Picks' holiday gift guides for 2019.

Teens are a daunting demographic to buy for. Thankfully, that leaves plenty of opportunities open for you.

Below, you'll find 44 gifts teens will be happy to receive. There's useful technology like mini projectors and shower speakers as well as of-the-moment must-haves like instant cameras and lightboxes that mimic cinema marquees. If you're still having trouble finding something great, and you can't just ask them what they want, it's a good idea to browse stores like Urban Outfitters to get a sense of what's popular.
