The Croatian city featured in 'Game of Thrones' is so flooded with tourists that it might ban new restaurants. It's one of many cities buckling under the weight of overtourism.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

  • Dubrovnik, Croatia, is proposing a ban on new restaurants, Julia Buckley reported for CNN Travel
  • The ban would prohibit restaurants from adding outside tables and chairs, Buckley reported.
  • Dubrovnik mayor Mato Franković told Buckley that the majority of Dubrovnik restaurants operate with outside tables since indoor space is so limited.
  • The city — where several famous scenes from the hit show "Game of Thrones" have been filmed — has seen a spike in tourism as "set jetter" fans have descended on it.
  • Dubrovnik joins a growing list of cities around the world that are buckling under the weight of overtourism.

A ban on new restaurants is Dubrovnik's next line of next defense against overtourism, Julia Buckley reported for CNN Travel

Dubrovnik's mayor, Mato Franković, told Buckley that the ban would prohibit restaurants from adding outside tables and chairs. Because of limited space, this would effectively ban new restaurant business, he confirmed.

The city council owns Dubronvik's public spaces and will vote on the proposal in December, according to Buckley.

"They can open inside, but knowing the Old City it's very hard to find a place where you can work inside. Ninety nine percent of restaurants work mainly with outside tables," Franković explained.

Even if a restaurant closes, a new one won't be able to take its place with the ban in place, Buckley noted.

In recent years, Dubrovnik has experienced a surge in tourism due to its role as the fictional city of King's Landing in the popular TV series "Game of Thrones." According to the Croatia Times, Dubrovnik has experienced record tourism in 2019.

Dubrovnik joins a growing list of cities and towns buckling under the weight of overtourism

Cities around the world are taking measures to combat overtourism. Venice, which is flooded with tourists every year, will ban large cruise ships from its canal beginning in 2022, Kieran Corcoran reported Business Insider. In July, Rome instituted a $450 fine for anyone who sits on the historic Spanish Steps, Evie Carrick reported for Insider

Similar to Dubrovnik, Maya Beach in Thailand experienced a surge in popularity as a result of the 2000 movie "The Beach" featuring Leonardo DiCaprio. Last year, it closed to tourists until June 2021 to preserve the marine ecosystem, Karla Cripps and Kocha Olarn reported for CNN in May

The negative effects of overtourism include overcrowding, pricing locals out of real estate, and environmental damage, Annie Lowrey wrote for the Atlantic in June. And overtourism doesn't appear to be dying down anytime soon. As Lowrey aptly observed: "Like breakfast margaritas on an all-inclusive cruise, it is suddenly everywhere."

You can't delete your Venmo history, but you can make all past and future transactions private — here's how to do it

Venmo logo is seen on an Android mobile phone.

  • You can't delete your Venmo history, but you can make all of your transactions private.
  • When you make your past transactions private, only the recipient and sender will be able to view it, effectively hiding it from the rest of your friends.
  • You can also make individual past transactions private, or set all of your future Venmo activity on private in the app.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The Venmo app is a great, easy way to transfer money between people without having to hand out cash or write checks.

It has made shared payments like splitting bills easier for everyone, and it seems rare to run into somebody who doesn't have it.

Venmo also has a sort of social media aspect, where you can add friends and see who's paid who for what.

This can be fun, but if you're a more private person and would rather that information not be on display, there is a way to make it so that nobody else (beyond the sender and recipient) can see any of your past transactions.

Here's how to do it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

3. A confirmation box will pop up. Tap Change Anyway.

How to get a Venmo card, which is like a debit card that uses money from your Venmo balance

0

venmo card

  • You can get a Venmo Card by applying on the app. You'll usually receive it in five to seven business days after you're approved for it.
  • A Venmo Card is a debit card offered by the mobile payment service that uses the balance you have on the app for purchases made within the United States.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Venmo, the popular app-based payment service owned by PayPal, launched its debit Venmo Card in the summer of 2018.

The card allows users to use their Venmo balance to make purchases outside of the app and at any vendor across the US that accepts Mastercard.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

Samsung Galaxy S10 (From $899.99 at Best Buy)

What is a Venmo Card?

The Venmo Card acts as a debit card and operates through Mastercard's network. As of right now, the Venmo card can only be used in the US.

With a Venmo Card, you will be able to use your Venmo balance at any and all vendors who accept Mastercard. There is no fee to apply for a Venmo card, and the card even has a handful of cash-back options (for example: 5% cash back on purchases made at Target).

Like opening any new banking account, Venmo will ask you to enter your personal information, including the last four digits of your social security number and your address. Once you are approved for a Venmo card and receive it, you will be able to track your purchases using the app and split costs with your Venmo friends.

The Venmo Card also allows you to temporarily disable it if you've briefly misplaced it, then re-enable it once its been found.

How to get a Venmo Card using the app

1. Open the Venmo app on your iPhone or Android phone.

2. At the top left-hand corner, select the menu icon, resembling three horizontal lines.

How to get a Venmo card

3. Scroll through the menu and select "Venmo Card."

8. The next page will ask for your address to ship your Venmo card. Enter it, then press "Next."

9. The next page will ask if you want your Venmo card to be automatically reloaded if there is ever a low balance, and from what connected bank account to make the withdrawal. Once you've made your choices, and selected an already connected bank account, tap "Next" at the bottom.

10. Review your information, then tap "Submit" at the bottom. Venmo will then verify your identity, and if it is approved, your Venmo card will be "in the works" — it will then show you the address the card is being shipped to and when to expect it, which is typically five to seven business days. You will also receive a confirmation email.

How to restart a Chromebook to fix issues with your laptop

0

Chromebook Asus logo

Restarting your computer is often necessary to clear up issues and get it back to working order.

But on a Chromebook, getting this done is not exactly straightforward.

If you hold down the power button on your Chromebook, you'll be able to either sign out or turn off your computer. Sometimes, turning your computer off and then on will solve your issues.

But other times, you might need to reboot your system more fully. Here's how to do it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

ASUS Flip 14-inch Chromebook (From $569.99 at Best Buy)

How to restart a Chromebook

You can also try a hard reset, which affects the computer's hardware, rather than the software (where your data is stored), and may fix whatever issues you're facing. Here's how to get that done:

1. Turn off your Chromebook by pressing one of the power buttons, or by clicking into the menu in the bottom-right corner and selecting the power icon.

1 HOW TO RESTART CHROMEBOOK

2. Press and hold down the "refresh" button (which is located just above the 3 and 4 keys) and tap the power button.

3. Release the refresh button when you see your Chromebook starting back up.

Keep in mind that there may be different requirements to perform a hard reset on your computer, depending on the type of Chromebook you have, though the above steps should work for most Chromebooks.

If that still doesn't fix your problem, you can reset your Chromebook to its factory settings, which will make it run like new again. Just make sure to back up your computer before doing so.

How to factory reset your Chromebook computer, if you're selling it or a restart didn't solve your problem

0

Man holding Chromebook

  • You can complete a factory reset on your Chromebook in a few simple steps.
  • A factory reset is a pretty drastic step, but sometimes that's necessary to get your computer working properly, or to protect your data if you plan on selling your computer.
  • Keep in mind that a factory reset will wipe out all of the information stored on your hard drive, including files and apps. So it's always a good idea to back up your data beforehand, if possible.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

A factory reset can be a useful way to get your Chromebook back to a more functional state if something went wrong, like your profile or settings are messed up and a restart didn't fix the problem, or for providing security if you plan on selling your computer.

Sometimes, you might even see a message telling you to reset your Chromebook. Here's what you'll need to do to get it done:

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

ASUS Flip 14-inch Chromebook (From $569.99 at Best Buy)

How to factory reset a Chromebook computer

Before you get started, be aware that a factory reset will erase all of the information on your hard drive. That includes settings and apps as well as files.

So to make sure a factory reset is the right move, try restarting your computer, turning off your extensions, and resetting the hardware before moving on to a full factory reset.

Backing up your data is also a good idea, if possible, before moving forward. If you're still having issues after troubleshooting, here's how to do a factory reset:

1. Sign out of your account by clicking open the menu in the bottom-right corner of the screen and clicking "Sign Out."

How to reset Chromebook

2. Press "Ctrl" "Alt" "Shift" and "R" on your keyboard, and then select "Restart" — a box will appear on the screen.

3. Select "Powerwash" and then "Continue."

4. Follow the prompts and sign back into your account, then follow the on-screen instructions to set up your Chromebook again.

Harper Wilde makes affordable bras in sizes up to 42F — we had 4 women test them, and here's how they fit

0
0

harper wilde bras review

  • Women's underwear has gotten markedly better in the startup age, with companies bringing innovation to basic items and leaner business models to the market.
  • Harper Wilde is one bra company worth knowing. The company makes some very comfortable, affordable bras in sizes 32A to 42F.
  • Four women on the Insider Picks team wore a Harper Wilde style to see how it stacks up. The gist is this: They're reliable, comfortable bras that are worth the $40.
  • See also: the best women's underwear you can buy

Over the last few years, women's intimates have undergone a renaissance.

Legacy brands like Victoria's Secret stumbled. Startups like ThirdLove, Lively, and Everlane improved the category. They brought softer materials and recycled materials, lower price points, expanded size ranges, and silhouettes that catered to comfort and confidence over the male gaze. Some hyper-popular men's underwear startups like Tommy John followed, issuing a women's collections in response to customer requests

Another noteworthy name is Harper Wilde. I came across the company the same way that many of us do these days — on Instagram. The startup, like a few of those mentioned before, set out to create a company that could offer affordable, comfortable, intuitive bras that counteracted the expensive, over-sexualization of the bra industry. They interviewed hundreds of women, and then they built their bras using those tenets as nonnegotiables.

What can you buy at Harper Wilde, and which sizes do they carry?

Currently, the company offers a spare core collection of the essential basics in reliable nude tones that will likely expand alongside the company. You can shop Harper Wilde for a $40 flexible everyday bra, a $45 everyday bralette, a $40 push-up, $40 flexible strapless, $45 sports bra, and a $45 nursing bra. Sizes range from 32A to 42F.

harper wilde bras

Like many new underwear companies, Harper Wilde makes no mistake on messaging.

This may have something to do with the fact that, unlike a surprising number of legacy companies, Harper Wilde was founded by two women who met shortly before attending business school. Specifically, Wharton School of Business, the genesis of many successful retail startups.

The company focuses its efforts singularly on women's needs — those who will be actually wearing and approving of their product — rather than focusing on the potential for men's approval by virtue of their product.

The name Harper Wilde is a portmanteau of Harper Lee and Laura Ingalls Wilder, and each purchase helps support girls' education and mentorship via a donation to Girls, Inc., since limited resources and opportunities mean women make up over two-thirds the number of illiterate adults. The company also says it chose the manufacturer of its bras because of its women's empowerment program.

What are the returns policies like, and do they have a home try-on?

As with many companies that have cut costs by cutting middlemen and moving online, Harper Wilde compensates for the removal of in-store fittings with a Fit Quiz, a good 30-day return policy, and a Home Try-On program. The latter allows you to pick three bras to try at home with no upfront charges for seven days. Keep what you like, and return what you don't free of charge. You can also email them for help picking the right style at stylist@harperwilde.com.

Are Harper Wilde bras worth buying?

Harper Wilde sent Insider Picks a few styles to test, and despite prices that hover around $40 per bra, they're some of the best we've found and tried from the internet's seemingly endless innovation and specialization.

You can read on to find our full impressions, but the gist is this: Harper Wilde makes great everyday bras that we highly recommend with one exception below. The full-coverage and sports bras are reliable, the material is surprisingly soft and cool, and the price points are very reasonable. We count their base layer bra and sports bra as among our favorites. But, for now, we'd recommend True & Co. for their lounge bra/bralettes.

Four women on the Insider Picks team spent a few weeks testing a Harper Wilde bra. Here are our impressions:

The Base

$45, available in four colors

I wear this bra often throughout the week because the soft and smooth fabric feels great on my skin. In terms of feel and look, it's pretty standard as bras go — full coverage, sturdy but comfortable underwire, and lightly lined cups — but its this reliability that makes me return to it every time. At just $40, this bra provides real value, and if you need some solid everyday bras, the price is reasonable enough to justify buying more than one. —Connie Chen

This has quickly become my go-to everyday bra when I'm not wearing a low-key True&Co Racerback Bralette. One of the downsides of the internet is that you can't tell how soft the material is, but it's cool-to-the-touch and one of the best materials in my drawer. The cups are indeed lightly lined, and the bridge between the cups is soft and pliable. I also appreciate that, unlike many multifunctional clothing pieces, this bra is just as comfortable when worn as a traditional bra as when it's used as a racerback. I gravitate toward this bra increasingly often, and at $45, I'd happily buy another or recommend it to my friends. —Mara Leighton

The Bliss

$45, available in four colors

I try to wear bralettes as often as I possibly can, so I was very excited to try Harper Wilde's Bliss bralette. As promised, this bralette is buttery soft. I really wanted to love it because the material is wonderful, but the sizing was very off for me. Following the sizing and fit directions on the website, I opted for a size small since my band and cup size fell in the range of bra sizes that would convert to a small in this bralette. Unfortunately, the Bliss starts to rise whenever I'm wearing it, even if I'm not moving, and cuts into me in awkward places. I'm pretty petite, so I'm not really sure why I had this issue, but sizing up might be the way to go with The Bliss bralette. —Ciannah Gin

The Move

$45, available in five colors

My only complaint about this sports bra is that it doesn't come in more colors. This is seriously my favorite sports bra of the moment. The material is simultaneously soft, stretchy, and supportive. There are no pads or wires, but the compression helps keep you secure while exercising. The super-soft fabric is antimicrobial, so it wicks away sweat quickly, and it feels really nice on my skin. It also doesn't feel too tight, and the band doesn't dig in anywhere, which makes working out a lot more comfortable. As far as sports bras go, I've found The Move to be pretty flattering. I love the ice blue color and will probably buy another in black soon. —Remi Rosmarin

Thanksgiving is coming up, and with it, Black Friday. Black Friday marks the beginning of the busiest shopping season of the year when shoppers pursue their gift-shopping list with increased urgency.

When is Black Friday?

Officially, Black Friday lands on Friday, November 29.

But like many other retail holidays, Black "Friday" really starts a few days, or even earlier at some stores, before the real event. The high levels of anticipation for deals are enough to make retailers launch their sales early.

That's probably better for shoppers anyway. It means they have extra time to shop the countless online sales at their leisure, rather than try to cram all their shopping into one hectic day.

What time does Black Friday start?

Here's when Black Friday starts at various retailers. While a handful will start their Black Friday sales on Thanksgiving Day, there are also many that won't be open on the holiday. We will share the start dates and times of more stores, like Walmart, when they're announced.

Amazon: Device deals start online at 12 a.m. November 22.

Best Buy: Store doors open at their regular operating time on Thanksgiving Day. Sales start online at 12 a.m. November 29.

Kohl's: Store doors open at 5 p.m. Thanksgiving Day. Sales start online at 12:01 CT November 29.

The Home Depot: Appliance Special Buys are live now in participating stores and online.

What time does Black Friday end?

In stores, most Black Friday sales end after November 29. However, sales will continue online.

Once we learn the exact Black Friday 2019 end dates and times of the most popular retailers, like AmazonBest Buy, Walmart, and Target, we will share them below.

The Home Depot: Appliance Special Buys end at 11:59 p.m. December 5.

How long do Black Friday sales last?

Again, don't be fooled by the name that suggests it's a single day. Black Friday sales usually last at least a few days, whether they start early or continue on until Cyber Monday.

Black friday target deals 4x3

Black Friday is, statistically speaking, one of the best days of the year to shop. Nothing is off-limits when it comes to a discount: TVs, cult-favorite cooking products, the latest smart home gadgets ... if you go into the shopping event knowing what you want and which retailer is selling it for the lowest price, you can make quick work of a shopping and holiday gifting.

Alongside Best Buy, Walmart, and Amazon, Target will likely be offering some of its best discounts of the year.

When does Target release its Black Friday deals?

It depends. This year, there will be a public Black Friday preview sale on November 8 and November 9.

Target will again give RedCard holders early access to shop more than 100 deals all day on Wednesday, November 27. Members of Target Circle (the company's free loyalty program) will reportedly get early access at 6 p.m. Central Time on November 27.

For everyone else, Target Black Friday deals became available on Thanksgiving morning.

Early Black Friday deals and predictions

Target released its Black Friday ad on November 6. It's also instituting something called "HoliDeals" which includes discounts dropping throughout the season on thousands of items. That will start on Friday, November 8 with a two-day Black Friday preview sale with reportedly four times as many early deals as last year.

Target's Black Friday preview sale is November 8-9, 2019. Here's what to buy:

Here are Target Thanksgiving and Black Friday deals we already know:

And, to keep up with retailers with great shipping policies (cough, Amazon), you may see cheaper expedited shipping. Target already offers free shipping on everything.

Another good rule of thumb is to pay attention to which popular items are being featured in the Black Friday ads of other retailers, like the Instant Pot, or devices like smart home gadgets that are exclusive to select retailers and openly competing with one another. No one likes to be outdone, and even if the same model isn't on sale at both Amazon and Target, you're likely to find a different model similarly discounted at a competing retailer. Plus, while major retailers like Target tend to suspend their price-match policy during big sales events, they typically try to price-match sales on popular items with their biggest competitors.

Will Target be open on Thanksgiving?

Yes. Target will be open for an eight-hour shift from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day like it was last year. Doors close at 1 a.m. and re-open again at 7 a.m. on Friday, November 29.

Does Target allow in-store pick-up?

Sometimes, but you may not want to count on it. There are certain items that will be eligible for in-store pickup, but not likely everything you'll want to buy.

What is Target's return policy?

For items purchased from November 1 – December 25, the 30-day return period will start on December 26. As usual, RedCard holders have a longer returns window.

Is Target price-matching during Black Friday?

No. Target will price-match between its online and in-store prices, but not with competitors.

However, Target will likely keep prices as close to competitors as possible, and most major retailers tend to adjust prices throughout the day to remain competitive. You just won't have 14 days to ask for a differential refund if you come across something lower.

Will RedCard holders still get 5% back on purchases at Target through Black Friday?

Yes. You'll see the return back on your RedCard in one to two business days.

Are there any ways to save even more at Target on Black Friday?

As mentioned, it certainly doesn't hurt to be a RedCard holder. They typically get early access to the deals, and they get an extra 5% off their purchases. You'll also get free shipping with no minimum. If you make purchases with a Target Debit Card, Credit Card, or Target Mastercard (all RedCards) you also get an additional 30 days to return a purchase.

You can also get early access for free by joining Target Circle, the retailer's free loyalty program.

The benefits may be slim in comparison, but it also doesn't hurt to download the Target app. Retailers with apps are known to push specific coupons or exclusive discounts to those with it downloaded already or to incentivize downloads.

And while it pays to get early access to avoid sellouts, Target is offering incentives for shopping on Black Friday, too. Shoppers who spend $50 (in-store or online) on November 29 get a 20% off coupon to redeem online or in stores December 3 through December 14.

In terms of strategy, the best plan is to have a plan. Make a wish-list of what you'd like to buy day-of by clicking the heart on a Target product. When Black Friday deals open to the public, shop your wish-list and don't get lost browsing. And prioritize whatever is most likely to sell out first.

As more Black Friday deals drop, we'll update this page with the best discounts Target is offering and when you can access them.

'How many people can watch Hulu at once?': An unlimited amount, with the right subscription — here's what you need to know

0

Best Shows on Hulu 4x3

  • By default, up to two people can watch a Hulu account at once, meaning that you can stream on two different devices simultaneously.
  • There are exceptions to this rule, however, depending on which Hulu tier you're subscribed to, which devices you're using, and where you are.
  • If you want to get rid of the limits on how many people can watch one Hulu account, you'll need to have a Hulu + Live TV subscription and pay an extra $9.99 a month for an "Unlimited Screens" add-on.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Sharing the costs of a streaming service by sharing passwords with friends and family is common. As many as one in five adults do it

Although this is great for consumers, streaming companies aren't so happy about missing out on potential customers.

Hulu is no different. Although they used to only allow users on the basic plan to watch on one device at once, you can now watch on two devices. You can create up to six profiles for your family and friends, but you'll still be limited to two simultaneous streams.

However, this isn't the case for all Hulu subscription tiers. Here's what you need to know.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Hulu Basic Subscription (From $5.99 per month)

Hulu + Live TV Subscription (From $44.99 per month)

Hulu watching limits, explained

Hulu has a number of different subscription tiers, each of which has its own limits and add-ons.

If you're subscribed to Hulu with Ads ($5.99 per mo.) or ad-free Hulu ($11.99 per month), you'll be permanently limited to two simultaneous streams at once.

However, if you subscribe to Hulu + Live TV for $44.99 per month or Hulu (No Ads) + Live TV for $50.99 month, you can subscribe to the "Unlimited Screens" add-on for an additional $9.99 per month.

This allows you to share Hulu with as many devices as you'd like, but only if those devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network — called your "Home network."

This package also allows you to stream Hulu on up to three mobile devices outside of the Home network, but these devices have to "check in" with the Home network at least once every 30 days in order for the service to continue working.

hulu

So for most cord-cutters, the cost of Unlimited Screens and Live TV, along with their restrictions, won't solve the problem of sharing accounts.

If you're sharing with more than one other heavy user of the services, you may want to consider buying your own independent subscription.

This $200 AI toothbrush was the most fun I've ever had brushing my teeth

Genius X toothbrush

  • Oral hygiene company Oral-B released a new electric toothbrush that uses AI to improve brushing.
  • The toothbrush tracks brushing patterns to give specific feedback when users brush too hard, or miss certain areas.
  • An accompanying app lets you set goals and track brushing habits over time.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Oral-B's new Genius X toothbrush with AI technology went on sale in October, and I got a test version to try out.

Artificial Intelligence has become available in more household items than ever, from washing machines to ovens to toilets, so a toothbrush isn't exactly unexpected. AI products are typically more expensive than their non-smart counterparts, and this is no exception. One of the best-selling and top-rated electric toothbrushes on the market sells for $40, while the Genius X goes for $220, or as much as $280 on Amazon.

Oral-B isn't the first company with the idea to apply AI to brushing your teeth. Last year, Colgate released a $100 AI toothbrush, which sold at Apple stores.

Oral-B says the AI for its toothbrush has "learned from thousands of brushing styles" to direct users to improve brushing. It tracks areas in the mouth that weren't brushed enough, and areas with too much pressure, which it displays in an accompanying app.

Here are my thoughts and experiences using a $200, AI toothbrush:

SEE ALSO: A TikTok creator used a clever $5 hack to make an older iPhone look like the new $1,000 iPhone 11 Pro

I opened the Genius X box, which came with body, 3 heads, a charging case, and a manual.

The manual instructed me to download the app, which I did. From there, using it was really straightforward, and I didn't refer to the manual again.

The app syncs with your toothbrush to store your brushing data. When you brush, you can either have the app open or sync afterwards.

In the beginning, the app takes you through some settings and basic tutorials. You also have the option to connect with Amazon and set up refills of brush heads.

You can set a notification for when it's time to replace your brush head, which was one of the features I appreciated most.

You have the option to start a "dental care journey" if you have specific health goals you want to focus on. I chose gum protection.

The app asked me to assess my gums, then gave me a daily routine to follow, even telling which brush head was best and adjusting the settings on the toothbrush. This was probably the next best thing to have a dentist personalize a regimen.

Other features seemed less helpful. I couldn't imagine a scenario in which I would share my tongue cleaning streak on Facebook, for example.

The feedback from brushing was really useful. I found it made more sense to keep an eye on the app as I brushed, which updated in real time to show how I was doing, rather than checking afterwards and feeling like the app was scolding me.

Maybe it's silly, but it felt weirdly good to have the app tell me I did a great job.

There are also badges you can earn if you do certain things well.

Overall, this toothbrush is definitely more powerful than my $20-something electric toothbrush, and I like the ability to see the areas I'm missing, but until my dentist tells me it's life or death I can't justify spending hundreds of dollars on a toothbrush.

Bill Gates isn't interested in space exploration and doesn't like Elizabeth Warren's wealth tax: Here are 5 highlights from the billionaire's DealBook interview

0
0

big gates dealbook

Bill Gates isn't interested in space or juggling iPhone apps to communicate.

These are just two of the thoughts the billionaire shared in a wide-ranging discussion with New York Times reporter Andrew Ross Sorkin at the DealBook Conference on November 7. The day-long conference brought together Airbnb CEO Brain Chesky, Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, Hillary Clinton, Kim Kardashian West, Kris Jenner, Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow, and others to discuss the intersection of business and policy at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Here are five highlights from the Gates interview.

1. Bill Gates thinks billionaires should pay higher taxes

However, Gates said he isn't a supporter of the wealth taxes proposed by Democratic presidential candidates.

"I happen to believe something in the middle [of the two parties]," Gates said. "I think you can make the estate tax higher; you could even take people who have sat on huge gains for say ten years, and say okay, you should create a taxation event there. I think just by treating capital income the same as labor income, that goes a very long distance, so I'm all for super progressive tax systems."

Warren's wealth tax would cost Gates an additional $6 billion in taxes annually, Sorkin said during the interview. Gates said he's already "paid more than anyone in taxes," totaling more than $10 billion in his lifetime.

Other ultra-wealthy Americans including George Soros and Abigail Disney have lobbied for a moderate wealth tax and cited Warren's proposal as an example, Business Insider previously reported.

Hillary Clinton, who was interviewed by Sorkin later in the day, also expressed support for a high estate tax, saying that a wealth tax would be "too disruptive," and that she "couldn't see" how it would work. While the idea of using a wealth tax to solve America's inequality problem has gained traction in recent years, proposals have been hampered by questions over the effectiveness and the constitutionality of such a tax, Business Insider previously reported.

2. Gates is more interested in solving malnutrition than exploring space

When asked by Sorkin if he was interested in space exploration, Gates replied, "No." When Sorkin alluded to Jeff Bezos' plan for space colonization, Gates interrupted to say, "He can have it."

Gates said he has talked about space exploration with Bezos, and that he "read a lot of science fiction but I guess not as much as [Bezos and Elon Musk] did." Business Insider previously reported that Bezos' space exploration plan was heavily influenced by a 1976 book he read in high school that proposed connecting the Earth and the moon via a series of enormous, cylindrical tubes.

Sorkin asked Gates why he isn't interested in space, to which Gates responded: "Because malnutrition is so much more impactful. You know HIV is more impactful, malaria is more impactful.

3. Gates thought Warren Buffett played a "parasitic" game before they became friends

"I didn't even want to meet Warren," Gates told Sorkin, "because I thought, 'Hey, this guy buys and sells [companies],' and so he found imperfections in terms of markets — that's not value-added to society, that's a zero-sum game that is almost parasitic. That was my view before I met him."

The pair has since gone on to share a 28-year friendship, Business Insider's Shana Lebowitz previously reported. Gates was even introduced at the conference as "Warren Buffett's best friend."

4. Gates believed "billions of dollars" would come from his meetings with Jeffrey Epstein

"I made a mistake in judgment in thinking those discussions would go to global health," Gates said. "That money never appeared."

A New York Times investigation published in October found that Gates met with Epstein multiple times after Epstein's conviction in 2011, including at least three meetings at Epstein's Manhattan townhouse. Following the publication of that story, a spokesperson for Gates said Gates regretted the association, but Gates himself hadn't publicly addressed it until Wednesday afternoon, Business Insider's Aaron Holmes reported.

"I gave him the benefit of my association," Gates said.

5. Gates said he's too "large-screen oriented" for his kids

"I have kids that think I don't see the world in a modern enough way, including even some technology things they use," Gates said while explaining that he is a normal parent who washes dishes and takes his kids to school. Gates has three children: Jennifer (23), Rory (20), and Phoebe (17).

"I'm not as phone-centric as they are," Gates said. "I mean, I have to tell myself, 'Oh I've got to check Instagram because my youngest daughter likes to communicate there,' I have to check WhatsApp because another child likes to communicate through that. It's like, oh my God, I have to do all this? But you know, if I forget to do it, then it's like,  'Wow, you're not paying attention to my life.'"

When it comes to communication, Gates said he prefers emails.

Meet the 2 Americans who were chosen from a pool of 140,000 people to spend 10 days on a mini-sabbatical in Antarctica with Airbnb this winter

Tynthia King - Spencer Ingley - Diptych - Airbnb 2019 Antarctica Sabbatical

  • Airbnb received 140,000 applications this fall for its all-expenses-paid expedition to Antarctica in December.
  • Five individuals were selected for the trip. Among those are two Americans: Tynthia King from Arizona and Spencer Ingley from Hawaii.
  • Together with citizen scientists from Dubai, Norway, and India, King and Ingley will study the impact of microplastics alongside scientist Kirstie Jones-Williams.
  • The "Antarctic Sabbatical" follows Airbnb's inaugural sabbatical trip to Italy earlier this year.
  • King and Ingley told Business Insider that they hope to use the trip to inspire a larger conversation about the effects of waste on the environment.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Earlier this fall, Airbnb announced that it would be accepting applications for a month-long, all-expenses-paid research expedition to the most remote destination on Earth: Antarctica. In total, 140,000 people hailing from 200 countries and territories applied — and five were selected to go.

The five expedition members, announced on October 30, include Tynthia King, a 35-year-old loan officer from Phoenix, Arizona, and Spencer Ingley, a 33-year-old assistant professor of biology at BYU-Hawaii.

King and Ingley will be joined by citizen scientists from Dubai, Norway, and India to study the presence of microplastics in Antarctica alongside scientist Kirstie Jones-Williams.

The expedition members will first attend immersion training for two weeks in Punta Arenas, Chile. They will then fly to Union Glacier Camp in Antarctica to collect snow samples and measure the presence of foreign microplastics over the course of 10 days. During the final week of their sabbatical, they will return to Chile to review their findings and partner with the Ocean Conservancy to communicate their findings.

The trip comes on the heels of Airbnb's inaugural sabbatical program this spring, which sent five individuals to help revitalize the historic town center of Grottole in southern Italy. The overarching goal of the sabbatical trips, according to Airbnb, is to provide "eye-opening opportunities for people around the world to travel with purpose and do good."

Business Insider spoke with King and Ingley about what inspired them to apply to the sabbatical program.

Tynthia King is a loan officer whose efforts at reducing waste, from Ghana to her office in Phoenix, brought her to the sabbatical program

Tynthia King Airbnb Antarctica Sabbatical

King's interest in the environment started on the humanitarian side, she told Business Insider.

King grew up in a poor neighborhood in Chicago and spent much of her childhood homeless. "I'm actually the only one of my siblings that hasn't been in federal prison," she told Business Insider. "I know a lot about what it is to grow up without things, and that kind of drove me to be passionate about youth — having been a homeless youth."

A few years ago, an opportunity opened up for King to volunteer at an orphanage in Ghana. The purpose of the trip was to help build a composting bathroom.

Initially, King didn't know much about how composting bathrooms worked. "I am absolutely not an engineer," she said with a laugh.

Once she learned more about the process, she began to reflect on humans' environmental footprint.

After volunteering at the orphanage, King decided to explore more of Ghana and was aghast at what she saw in the fishing villages along the coast. "When you go to the beautiful Atlantic-side beaches, they're just littered with all types of old fishing equipment. They have bottles, they have plastic, and it's just filthy," she told Business Insider.

There was no clean-up effort around the beaches, so she started to clean them up herself.

King now works as a loan officer in Phoenix, Arizona, and has become "hyper-aware" of the impact of her everyday actions on the environment since her Ghana trip. Recently, a small Amazon order came to her office enclosed in a massive box wrapped in what King likened to "20,000 pieces of bubble wrap plastic." This level of excess prompted King to approach her COO and begin a recycling program.

King heard of the Airbnb Antarctic Sabbatical amid discussions of reducing office waste and was surprised to learn that microplastics would reach such a remote region.

Antarctica has also been on King's travel list since childhood. "When I was a kid, I knew that I wanted to visit every continent," she said. "I never wanted to spend the money halfway across the world to take some pictures in a bikini on a beach somewhere. I wanted to make my time wherever I was going important or worth it or to take something away from that experience."

Spencer Ingley is an assistant professor of biology who sees parallels between Hawaii and Antarctica

Spencer Ingley (Airbnb Antarctica Sabbatical) in El Chato Preserve, Isla Santa Cruz, Galapagos

Growing up near a lake in Gainseville, Florida, Ingley developed a love of nature at an early age. Today, he shares his passion for the outdoors with Brigham Young University-Hawaii students as an assistant professor of biology.

BYU-Hawaii has a student body of 2,500 representing 70 countries. Many of these students come from Asia and the Pacific, which presents a unique teaching opportunity, according to Ingley. "These are the countries that are having some of the biggest impacts on environmental issues like ocean plastic pollution, and also they're the countries that are being most impacted by these issues," he said.

"Our students can go back to their home countries across the Pacific and throughout Asia and be leaders in their community," he added.

Ingley told Business Insider that one of his favorite classes to teach is an introductory biology course that focuses, in part, on conservation issues in Hawaii and across the Pacific.

Ingley's students are often surprised to learn that the trash washing up on beaches of Oahu is by and large not from the island. "Virtually none of the pollution that we find on our shores is local," said Ingley. "Almost all of it is coming from Asia and from the west coast of North America."

In this sense, Ingley noted, Antarctica is not all that different from Hawaii. "It's incredibly remote, but it's threatened. It's being bombarded with these outside forces, such as plastics coming in," he said.

One thing that is quite different, however, is the weather. While Ingley has spent time in cold locations before, Antarctica is in a league of its own. "I'm not sure there's anything that you could do to prepare for Antarctica other than being in it," he said.

Ingley learned about the Airbnb sabbatical program through one of his students and hopes that his experience will encourage future students, and others around the world, to be stewards of their environment.

Ingley also calls himself "an explorer at heart."

Though preparing to be off the grid for a month will be a challenge, fieldwork is par for the course in his profession, Ingley said, and he plans to be in touch with his students as much as possible during the trip. "I'm thrilled about the adventure and work that awaits," he told Business Insider.

'Does Amazon accept Venmo?': It doesn't directly, but here's how you can use a Venmo Card instead

0

iphone laptop computer Amazon prime day

Unfortunately, Amazon doesn't directly accept payment through Venmo (or Venmo's sister payment service, PayPal).

Part of the reason for this is historical – PayPal has always had a strong relationship with eBay— and was once owned by eBay— which Amazon has always treated as a direct competitor.

But that is not the entire story. It's possible to use Venmo to make purchases on Amazon using a Venmo Card.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

Samsung Galaxy S10 (From $899.99 at Best Buy)

How to use a Venmo Card to make Amazon purchases

Venmo offers a Mastercard debit card with which you can use to make purchases using your Venmo app balance. It's a physical debit card that you can carry in your wallet or purse, and use it at any store in the US that accepts Mastercard.

But more importantly, you can add the Venmo Card to your Amazon account and use it to make purchases as a debit card.

1. To get a Venmo card, start the Venmo app on your phone and then tap the three horizontal lines at the top left of the screen.

2. In the menu, tap "Venmo Card."

3. Then tap "Get the Venmo Card" and follow these instructions to request your Venmo Card.

Does Amazon accept Venmo

Once you've received your Venmo Card, you can add it to your Amazon account or checkout cart to make purchases, just as you would with any other debit or credit card.

When is Cyber Monday 4x3

Black Friday is coming up, and close on its heels, Cyber Monday. These two retail holidays tell us that it's time to get serious about gift shopping— but the process doesn't have to cost a lot thanks to the abundance of deals offered by retailers.

When is Cyber Monday?

Cyber Monday takes place this year on the Monday after Thanksgiving, on December 2.

In recent years, however, the term "Cyber Monday" is slowly being phased out in favor of the longer and more intensive "Cyber Week." Previously, the main differentiation between Black Friday and Cyber Monday was that Black Friday focused on in-store sales and Cyber Monday on online sales.

However, as shopping habits increasingly favor the internet, Cyber Monday seems to be edging out Black Friday as the premier holiday shopping event of the season.

What time does Cyber Monday start?

Typically, it begins at 12 a.m. on Monday. However, it can also start earlier. For example, Amazon's sale began at 8 p.m. the Sunday before Cyber Monday.

Once we learn the exact Cyber Monday 2019 start dates and times of the most popular retailers, like AmazonBest Buy, Walmart, and Target, we will share them below.

And what time does Cyber Monday end?

Once we learn the exact Cyber Monday 2019 end dates and times of the most popular retailers, like AmazonBest Buy, Walmart, and Target, we will share them below.

How long do Cyber Monday sales last?

Cyber Monday sales could start as early as on Black Friday as part of a larger Cyber Week promotion. Though Cyber Monday sales once only took place on Monday, we've been seeing them extend to longer and longer durations.

Cyber Monday sales could last throughout the end of the week (ending December 6 or 7).

What else can I learn about Cyber Monday?

The Centurion 'black' card has a $2,500 annual fee and is invite-only, but you can get most of its benefits with the Amex Platinum

Business Centurion Card Amex

  • The Amex Centurion "black" card makes other premium credit cards look downright affordable. With an initiation fee of $7,500 and an annual fee of $2,500, it's for big spenders. Oh, and the annual fee is jumping to $5,000 starting in April 2020.
  • It's also invite-only; you can't apply without permission from Amex.
  • The card offers some incredible benefits, like complimentary elite status across four hotel chains and with Delta, airport arrival services, and access to a concierge.
  • While some of these perks are exclusive to the Amex black card, you can enjoy many of them with the Platinum Card® from American Express and the Business Platinum® Card from American Express.
  • Read more personal finance coverage.

Also known as the Centurion card, the American Express "black" card is so prestigious that you have to be invited to use it. Yes, you read that right — you can't just apply for it and expect to get approved. You have to receive a private invitation from American Express.

So, how do you get an invite for a black card? While the requirements aren't officially published, rumor has it that you have to be a high earner who has spent and paid off between $350,000 and $500,000 across all of your American Express accounts in a calendar year.

And once you're approved for the card, there's a $7,500 initiation fee, and a $2,500 annual fee. It makes premium credit cards like the Amex Platinum ($550 annual fee) and the Amex Business Platinum ($595) look downright affordable. Plus, as The Points Guy reports, the annual fee is increasing to $5,000 starting in April 2020!

Keep in mind that we're focusing on the rewards and perks that make these credit cards great options, not things like interest rates and late fees, which will far outweigh the value of any points or miles. It's important to practice financial discipline when using credit cards by paying your balances in full each month, making payments on time, and only spending what you can afford to pay back.

Benefits of the Amex black card

Aside from the status symbol that comes with simply carrying an Amex black card in your wallet, you can enjoy these perks by having one.

Hotel elite status

With a black card, you can lock in hotel elite status at four major hotel chains: Marriott, Hilton, Intercontinental Hotels Group, and Relais & Châteaux. Hotel elite status gets you sweet benefits like room upgrades, late checkouts, resort and spa credits, and free breakfast.

The Amex Platinum and Amex Business Platinum offer status with Hilton and Marriott, but not with IHG and Relais & Châteaux.

Delta elite status

According to The Points Guy, the black card also offers cardholders Platinum Medallion elite status with Delta. You can't get this benefit with any other credit card, and it offers you perks like complimentary upgrades and bonus miles.

Airport lounge access

There's nothing better than knowing you have access to a comfortable airport lounge while you're traveling, especially if you have a long layover. The Amex black card gets you free access to more than 1,200 airport lounges around the world, including Amex Centurion Lounges, Delta Sky Clubs when you're flying Delta, and Priority Pass airport lounges. You can sit back and relax on the comfortable chairs while indulging in some good food and drinks.

The airport lounge access you get as a Centurion cardholder is virtually identical to the lounge access you get with the Amex Platinum and Amex Business Platinum.

Equinox membership

The Centurion card added several new perks in late 2019, along with the announcement that Amex would be raising the annual fee. One of the most valuable new benefits is Equinox Destination Access Membership, which lets Centurion cardholders use any of the 100-plus Equinox gym locations in the US, UK, and Canada. This membership costs $300 per month plus a $500 initiation fee, so it's quite valuable if you're a fan of the high-end fitness club chain.

Unsurprisingly, there's no comparable benefit on the Platinum and Business Platinum cards.

Up to $1,000 per year in Saks Fifth Avenue credits

The Amex Platinum offers up to $100 in credits for Saks Fifth Avenue per year, so it's only fitting that the Centurion has an even better version of this perk.

Starting in 2020, Centurion cardholders will get up to $1,000 in credits for Saks purchases — divided into four credits of up to $250 per quarter of the year. To get the credit, cardholders just have to make an eligible Saks purchase with their Centurion card, and they'll be reimbursed up to the quarterly and annual limit in the form of a statement credit.

As a bonus, Saks stores will open their doors to Centurion cardholders outside of normal business hours — a pretty extravagant perk for those who want to make a power move or impress their non-Centurion-holding friends.

CLEAR membership

CLEAR is an expedited security membership (an alternative to TSA PreCheck), and you can use it at more than 30 airports and more than 20 sports and concert venues in the US.

The recently revamped American Express® Green Card offers a statement credit for up to $100 toward CLEAR membership, which costs $179, but with the Amex Centurion card you can get a statement credit for the full cost of membership when you use your card to buy it. Plus, you can get statement credits to cover adding up to three family members.

24/7 concierge service

An Amex black card gets you your own personal concierge whenever you'd like one. You can count on the round-the-clock concierge service to help you make travel plans or reservations at exclusive restaurants. This service can also get you tickets to just about any event and/or purchase gifts on your behalf.

Once again, the Amex Platinum and Business Platinum also offer concierge services. However, Centurion cardmembers are definitely the top priority for Amex concierge, and they get the best access to restaurant reservations and more.

International arrival service

If you travel abroad often, you'll love the black card's international arrival service. As long as you fly business or first class via American Express Travel, you'll be assigned to your own personal guide who will make the immigration and customs process a breeze. This isn't a benefit you can replicate with any other Amex card.

Another exclusive airport perk: Centurion cardholders get complimentary membership to The Private Suite at LAX, a private VIP terminal. But there's a big catch: You have to pay each time you use it — and it costs up to $3,000.

No spending limit

There are no preset spending limits with the black card, so you can easily buy big-ticket items that you may not necessarily be able to pay for with other credit cards. Keep in mind, however, that since the black card is technically a"charge card," you must pay off your balances in full every month. (The Amex Platinum and Business Platinum are also charge cards.)

Other lifestyle perks

Beyond offering elite status with more travel partners, international arrival service, and the top tier of Amex concierge service, the black card stands out from the Amex Platinum and Business Platinum with its selection of wine-related benefits, such as consultations with a wine specialist and wine-buying offers.

Black cardholders also get several shopping perks, including special offers and VIP benefits with Net-a-Porter.

The Amex Platinum is more attainable, and offers many of the same perks

If you don't get an invite for the American Express black card, don't fret. As you can see, many of the benefits it offers are available on the Amex Platinum, which has a $550 fee. You'll get no preset spending limits, hotel elite status, complimentary access to airport lounges, and concierge services.

If you're a business user, the Amex Business Platinum is worth a look. It offers most of these benefits as well, and has a $595 annual fee.

How to save audio messages on your iPhone and change your settings so audio messages stop deleting after 2 minutes

iphone messages/imessage app

  • You can save audio messages on your iPhone by tapping "Keep" under the message in your Messages app, or export them by using the "More..." button to select a message.
  • By default, audio clips sent to you using iMessage expire and disappear two minutes after you listen to them for the first time.
  • If you want to always save audio clips, turn off the expiration option in the Messages app's settings.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

One of the perks of using iMessage to chat with another iPhone user is that you can send audio messages in addition to text, emoji, and photos.

But Apple treats these audio messages like top secret communications — by default, they expire and are permanently deleted two minutes after the first time you listen to them, with no option to get them back. However, it's easy to preserve them longer.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

How to save audio messages on iPhone

When you receive an audio iMessage and play it for the first time, a clock starts counting down from two minutes. When the timer runs out, the audio clip is unceremoniously deleted without warning.

But you can save it — after you listen to it, tap "Keep" under the message. When you keep it, it'll always be available in Messages for playback.

How to stop audio messages from expiring on iPhone

Rather than using the "Keep" button to save audio messages, you can change the Messages app's settings so audio messages no longer expire after two minutes and will always stay available in the Messages app.

1. Start the Settings app.

2. Tap "Messages."

3. In the Audio Messages section, tap "Expire."

4. Tap "Never."

How to save audio messages on iPhone

The "Save" button in Messages no longer works, but you can export audio messages with the "More..." button

You might have discovered that you can tap and hold an audio message, which opens a pop-up menu with a "Save" option. Prior to iOS 12, selecting "Save" would put a copy of the audio message in the Voice Memos app, where you could share and email it.

Starting with iOS 12, though, the "Save" button no longer saves the audio clip and doesn't, in fact, appear to do anything at all. This might be a bug that Apple will eventually fix, but as of iOS 13, it continues to no longer export the audio. However, there is a way around this by exporting it to an email address.

1. In your Messages, open the conversation containing the audio message that you'd like to save.

2. Press down on the audio message until a menu pops up. Tap "More…" from the menu.

3. Select the arrow icon in the lower-right corner.

4. Select "Mail" which will open a pop-up window to compose an email.

6. Tap the arrow in the upper-right corner to send your message.
