  • Part of holiday fun for those who celebrate Christmas is the buildup before the main event with activities like decorating the tree, making cookies, and wrapping presents.
  • Another great tradition is the advent calendar. Every day brings a new surprise, delighting adults and children alike.
  • Below, you'll find 15 of the season's best (and earliest available) advent calendars to consider for the lead-up.

For those who celebrate Christmas, the holiday season is a lot of building up to the main event. There's shopping, gift-wrapping, decorating, and filling your seasonal to-do list with nostalgia-centered activities like sledding and drinking hot cocoa by an open fire. If you're lucky enough to treat yourself to some cozy traditions with loved ones, it can easily be the best time of the entire year.

One of the best "buildup" traditions is the advent calendar. Each day, you get to surprise yourself or loved ones with a treat. Think: candy, grooming products, little notes, and other daily reminders of care and appreciation that you may otherwise be too busy for the rest of the year. It's an easy way to make every day of the holiday season feel special and exciting.

Below are a few of the season's best advent calendars:

'Why does my iPhone go straight to voicemail?': How to troubleshoot your iPhone to ensure it rings when you get a call

$

Man using iPhone

  • Your iPhone might go straight to voicemail for a number of reasons, including your Do Not Disturb settings or several other issues with your phone.
  • There are a few troubleshooting methods to try if your iPhone is sending calls directly to voicemail, most of which involve checking that you haven't accidentally made it impossible to receive calls.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

While many of us would rather text these days, the truth is that there are many occasions when we need to be aware of who's calling us.

Whether you're waiting to hear back from a potential employer, or simply want to talk to a friend, you'll need your iPhone to ring when someone calls.

But what happens if your iPhone goes straight to voicemail whenever you get a call?

There are several reasons why your iPhone might not ring, and instead send the caller directly to voicemail. If this is happening to you, you might have to go through a few different troubleshooting options.

Below are some reasons why this might be happening, and some solutions to fix the issue.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

How to make sure your iPhone won't go straight to voicemail

Turn off Do Not Disturb mode

When your iPhone is in Do Not Disturb mode, any call you receive will go straight to voicemail, and you won't be alerted when you receive notifications.

You might not have enabled Do Not Disturb mode on your iPhone intentionally, but if your device is going straight to voicemail, it's worth making sure that you didn't accidentally turn it on.

You can check this in two different ways.

To disable "Do Not Disturb" via the Control Center:

1. Open the Control Center on your iPhone. To do this, swipe your finger up from the bottom of your iPhone's screen (or from the upper-right corner on an iPhone X or newer).

2. Look for the icon that looks like a crescent moon — this is the Do Not Disturb icon.

3. The icon should be grayed out, but if it's illuminated white, this means that you have Do Not Disturb on.

IMG_8511

4. Tap the icon so the white is replaced by gray, and you've turned Do Not Disturb off.

You can also check to see if "Do Not Disturb" is enabled through the Settings app.

1. Tap the Settings app icon on your iPhone's home screen.

2. Scroll down to the "Do Not Disturb" option, and tap to open it.

3. Tap the switch at the top of the page so it turns gray.

IMG_8513

On this page, you can also see how Do Not Disturb may have turned on in the first place. Make sure that you don't have the mode scheduled, and that it isn't set to turn on automatically when you're driving.

For more information on how Do Not Disturb works, see our article, "How to use Do Not Disturb on iPhone manually, or schedule it to activate at a specific time each day."

Check your iPhone's volume

While your iPhone's volume being muted won't keep calls from coming through, it does make it harder to hear calls when you receive them.

To make sure you hear all your calls:

1. Open the Settings app and tap on "Sounds & Haptics."

2. Adjust the slider beneath the "Ringer and Alerts" header to your desired volume — as you slide your finger along, the phone will play a short sound showing how loud the ringer will be.

IMG_8514

If you've perhaps turned off your volume because you're receiving too many calls from spammers, check out our article, "How to stop robocalls and other spam calls from reaching your iPhone."

Restart your iPhone

If you can't find anything in your settings that would send a call straight to voicemail, your iPhone might simply need to be refreshed. You should try restarting it to work out the kinks.

To learn how to restart any iPhone model, check out our article, "How to restart and force-restart any iPhone model."

Make sure your iPhone is updated

Again, while running an outdated version of iOS doesn't necessarily mean you'll experience this problem, Apple advises that whenever you're having trouble with your device, you should make sure you're fully updated.

To check this that you're updated:

1. Open your Settings app.

2. Tap the "General" tab.

3. Tap "Software Update."

If a new version of iOS is available, you'll be prompted to download and install it here.

IMG_8515.PNG

Check with your service provider

If none of the above methods work, it's worth checking in with your cell service provider to see if they're experiencing any system-wide issues.

If they are, that might explain why your calls are being sent straight to voicemail. If there aren't any problems, it might be time to contact Apple for further support.

I ate at the first US location of a popular Chinese chain, and it was like dining in a creepy Orientalist crypt

Helen's New York Interior

  • Helen's is a popular Hong Kong-based lounge chain with over a hundred locations across China and Hong Kong. Its Asian locations combine extravagant decor with creative cocktails and Cantonese pub snacks.
  • I visited the first Helen's location in the US, which opened in New York in September.
  • It was like dining in a creepy crypt, and only kind of in a good way. Helen's American menu is generic, while its decor and drink names go overboard with outdated Orientalist themes.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Going abroad is never easy, but it can be rewarding.

US chains like McDonald's, KFC, and Pizza Hut have had branches all around the world for decades and have integrated into their new cultures in unexpected and sometimes marvelous ways. Pizza Hut is a sit-down fine-dining establishment in China. KFC has become a Christmas tradition in Japan.

So it only makes sense that international chains coming to the US might have the same chance to build something new and exciting in a foreign land.

But only in the past few years have international chains, like Jollibee and Bonchon started coming to the US. These chains have carved out a place in the American pantheon of chain restaurants by bringing their signature foods and styles to the table, with minor adaptations to appeal to American diners.

So I was excited when I heard that Helen's was opening its first US location in New York. Helen's is a bar and lounge chain from Hong Kong with over a hundred locations across China and Hong Kong.

Read more: I ate at a fast-growing fried chicken chain from Korea and it was maybe the best fried chicken I've ever had

In order to get an idea of what I might expect, I checked out the TripAdvisor page for a Hong Kong location. From what I could tell, it had extravagant decor with many traditional Chinese motifs, but it also seemed to have a relaxed, pub-like atmosphere. Customers seemed to love it for its cheap beer, creative cocktails and affordable snacks like fish and chips, deep-fried cheese, and seafood spaghetti.

I went to the new Helen's location in Manhattan expecting a similar experience, but what I got was an eerie Orientalist fantasy with one foot in the grave.

SEE ALSO: I ate at Benihana for the first time, and my disappointing experience made it clear how far Asian-American cuisine has come

I walked past the unassuming entrance before I retraced my steps and forced myself to take a closer look. At first glance, I thought Helen's was closed.

Finally, I saw the arrow pointing down a flight of stairs. Although the Hong Kong location I'd seen on TripAdvisor had a typical restaurant entrance with a sign, this location went full-on New York with a hidden entrance.

Speakeasy-style establishments are all the rage right now, and whoever opened this location of Helen's knew that. I was still unsure I was in the right place until I opened the door.

The door opened into a dark stairwell that I almost tumbled down. There were multicolored Moroccan-style lamps hanging from the ceiling and a mural relief of Chinese warriors on the wall behind.

I went at 4:30 pm, so I wasn't surprised that the place was completely empty. However, the staff seemed surprised to see me. It took me a couple of minutes to find someone to seat me.

'That's weird," one of the staff told me when he saw me taking photos. "The last guy who came in here was also a photographer."

It was easy to see why people would want to take photos here. The decor was just as extravagant as I'd expected.

Since the staff seemed less than bothered, I took a couple of minutes to explore the place.

The decor reminded me of old Chinese mansions I had visited, but also of Buddhist temples and, oddly, the Terracotta army tomb.

This elaborate wood carving is the twin of a wood carving I saw in photos for the Hong Kong location of Helen's.

I had also seen these exact wall decorations in TripAdvisor photos for the Hong Kong location.

Their contemporary style contrasted with some of the hyper-traditional decor ...

... like this warlike statue of a woman.

There were also elements that made Helen's feel crypt-like, like the grated skylights that were the only source of natural light.

Some of the stone wall carvings looked straight out of an "Indiana Jones" movie. And like any rational human, I love me some whip-wielding Harrison Ford.

But Indiana Jones is built on some pretty outdated Orientalist logic. And there were a couple of things about Helen's decor that raised my eyebrows.

It seems to take the "Mysterious East" trope a little too seriously.

Naturally, I had to see if the food reflected the environment. I was pretty excited to try some of the snacks I'd seen on TripAdvisor. I expected Hong Kong-style food: Chinese meets British meets other Pacific influences.

The drinks had names like "Pearls of the Orient" and "China Doll," and the food available was pretty generic pan-Asian. Nothing about it was distinctly Hong Kong.

In order to avoid having to say "Pearls of the Orient," I ordered a lychee martini — not exactly an original concoction.

It was a caustic mix of bottom-shelf vodka and lychee puree from concentrate. I like my drinks strong, but I couldn't get through half of this one. It was distractingly bitter.

Even the lychee seemed to be pulled from a can. I should have taken this as a warning.

Alas, I had ordered takoyaki (fried octopus dough balls) and chashu bao (BBQ pork bun sandwiches) to nibble on.

The takoyaki looked really appetizing when they arrived. They were lathered in Japanese mayo and takoyaki sauce and were dusted with lemongrass and bonito flakes.

My server advised me to wait a few minutes before starting in on them, as they were very, very hot. The bonito flakes on top were very, very fragrant.

After a few minutes, I went for my first ball. But a poke of the pick revealed that it was squishy and soft. Takoyaki is supposed to be crispy on the outside.

My first bite into these mushy spheres was one of the most disappointing first bites I've had in a while. There were real chunks of octopus, which was nice, but there was zero crisp on the outside.

The flavors were all there, but I just couldn't get over the texture. I asked my server about these, and she told me that they were frozen takoyaki that had been reheated in an air fryer.

The chashu bao looked absolutely gorgeous. They were steamed buns filled with pork belly, pickles, green onions, and hoisin sauce.

This style of bao is more Taiwanese than Cantonese, but I love them, so I couldn't resist.

A good steamed bun should be fluffy and soft, like a carby cloud. But these buns were flat and stiff. My server informed me that they had come from a refrigerator.

Like the takoyaki, all the flavors of a bao were there. They just weren't good flavors. The pork was dry, tough, and bland. The pickled vegetables were fine, but that's because they required no preparation.

The dipping sauce, oddly enough, was not hoisin sauce, although that's what was already on the bun. It was astringent and didn't go with the other flavors.

In the end, I polished off most of the takoyaki and two of the chashu bao. I was full but unsatisfied. The Helen's US website promises an "elevated" experience, but I found myself craving the down-to-earth pub food that I'd seen on TripAdvisor.

The menu and decor of this Helen's lacked the casual charm of the Helen's I'd seen in photos. This location had erased much of what made Helen's so appealing and replaced its charm with an outdated Orientalist aesthetic that Americans may have wanted a decade ago.

But the most successful Asian chains planting US roots — Din Tai Fung, Little Sheep Hot Pot, and Ippudo Ramen — do well because they offer an experience that is true to their home cultures, not a watered-down version that condescends to an audience of American diners who are more culturally literate and culinarily adventurous than ever before.

Sure, you can line your walls with wood carvings and giant Buddha statues. But if the food and drink consist of air-fried frozen takoyaki and the drinks have more exciting names than flavors, people won't buy what you're selling.

Helen's stripped its concept to something that's pedestrian and unexciting despite all the bells and whistles. It missed a golden opportunity to bring a uniquely Hong Kong experience to America, but that's ok. Someone else will do it.

Glenlivet is trying to get customers on board with drinking whiskey out of little pods that dissolve in your mouth — and people have questions

glenlivet whiskey capsules

  • Glenlivet is now selling its whiskey in the form of small pods that dissolve in your mouth.
  • The Scotch whiskey company released a video advertisement showing people enjoying the collection of "edible cocktail capsules" that can be consumed with "no need for a glass, ice, or a cocktail stirrer."
  • Each capsule, which is made of seaweed, holds 0.77 ounces— or about half a typical shot — of booze.
  • People had many questions on social media, with many wondering if it was a joke and others comparing the capsules to Tide Pods.
  • Some said consuming whiskey this way would ruin the experience because you can't smell it or sip it.
  • Glenlivet did not respond to Business Insider's request for comment on whether or not the cocktail capsules are a real product the company will be rolling out.
  • Notpla, the packaging startup that made the dissolvable capsules, told Business Insider the collection is a limited release that will only be available at one London bar during London Cocktail Week, which runs through October 13.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Scotch whiskey company Glenlivet seems to have launched an already controversial new product: "The Capsule Collection," which sells whiskey in small, biodegradable pods that dissolve in your mouth.

The company released a video showing people enjoying what the narrator calls "edible cocktail capsules" made from seaweed that can be enjoyed with "no need for a glass, ice, or a cocktail stirrer."

According to the video, Glenlivet partnered with sustainable packaging startup Notpla to create the pods and London bar Tayer to create three new Founder's Reserve-based recipes.

"To enjoy them, pop the capsule in your mouth and take a bite to release the delicious cocktail ingredients," the narrator says in the video.

Each capsule contains 23 milliliters of booze, or about 0.77 ounces. A typical shot glass holds 1.5 ounces.

"As a brand that celebrates originality, we are always looking to break the conventions that have determined how single malt Scotch has historically been enjoyed," Glenlivet director Miriam Eceolaza told Food and Wine magazine. "The Glenlivet Capsule Collection does exactly that, and we're excited to see how people react when they try our glassless cocktails."

People on the internet have a lot of questions

Many people on Twitter wondered if the capsule collection was a joke or a parody.

Glenlivet did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment on whether or not the cocktail capsules are a real product the company will be rolling out.

Some said the capsules reminded them of Tide Pods, the laundry detergent capsules that have long been at the center of a meme about the product appearing edible. In the "Tide Pod Challenge," some people — mainly teens — pretended, or in some cases, appeared to actually eat Tide Pods.

An overarching criticism of the whiskey pods was that the capsules would "cheapen" the mystique of the Glenlivet brand and ruin the experience of drinking whiskey.

glenlivet whiskey capsules pods

"Scotch is meant to be sipped, its complex flavors enjoyed in micro sips," one Twitter user wrote. "As soon as you treat it like tequila or cheap hooch, your brand is dead."

Another user wrote: "This destroys the experience of tasting a good scotch. You can't nose it. You can't sip it. You can't fold your tongue, and then flatten your tongue inside your mouth, exposing different flavor receptors."

On Instagram, one person pointed out that most whiskey drinkers seem to particularly enjoy the experience of sipping the beverage.

"I don't imagine they get a thrill out of popping a pod in their mouths," they wrote.

whiskey pods

Notpla, the packaging startup that created the capsules, told Business Insider that the capsules are a limited release product that will only be available at the Tayer bar in London during London Cocktail Week, which runs from October 4 through October 13.

The creator of the capsule cocktail recipes, bartender Alex Kratena of Tayer, told The Washington Post that the collaboration was "an exploration of the flavor pillars" in Glenlivet whiskey.

"For me, there's so much more which makes the liquid complex," Kratena told the Post. "When you insert them in your mouth and gently press them against your palate, you get all the flavors."

He added that any similarity to Tide Pods was a coincidence.

Glenlivet also did not reply to Business Insider's request for comment on the price of the "capsule cocktails."

I used to think packing cubes were a waste of space, but this $48 set cuts down my packing time and helps me stay organized on trips

PC1601_PACKING_CUBES_BLUSH_PINK 1_copy_1000x1000

  • I travel often, and while I've optimized every other part of the process, I still dreaded packing.
  • Packing cubes are the only things that have made a difference. They've cut the time it takes to pack and get ready in the morning down to a third of what it's been in the past.
  • I pack with Calpak's five-piece set ($40.80 at Nordstrom), but there are more lightweight and/or budget-friendly options to consider as well, depending on your needs.

If I could have back every moment I've spent blindly digging in a suitcase (and then repacking said suitcase), I'd tack weeks back onto my lifetime.

I travel often, and I've gone to great lengths to optimize virtually every other part of the process — from the best under-$20 airplane headphones to the best camera purse to ways to get around costly international cellular data and carry-on restrictions— even the best credit cards for travel rewards and services that literally plan each day's itinerary for you— but I still dreaded the nights during which I had to pack.

Apps like PackPoint, which generate a basic packing list based on the number of nights away, activities planned, and the weather of your destination, make packing easier, but the only travel essential that has made a difference for me before, during, and after the trip itself are packing cubes. Specifically, Calpak's $40, five-piece packing cube set.

Why packing cubes are useful:

The idea behind packing cubes is that you can create mini organized compartments within the unstructured main compartment of a suitcase so you can find the essentials instantly. No digging involved. You can organize them by occasion (wedding rehearsal, wedding, Sunday brunch, airplane outfit, etc.) or by type (pants, underwear, grooming essentials, etc.) depending on how you think about getting dressed every day.

PC1601_PACKING_CUBES_BLUSH_PINK_2_1000x1000

What's included in the Calpak packing cube set:

The Calpak 5-Piece Set includes a large, (17" x 12"), medium (15" x 11"), and two small (12" x 8.8") cubes, plus one Envelope pouch (13" x 10") with a water-resistant lining. Each cube has space for a label for extra organization (occasion, outfit, item types), a top-carry handle, and a zippered pocket on the back. The mesh front window lets your clothes breathe, and lets you see at a glance what's inside.

My experience using the packing cubes:

For a decade of travel, I thought packing cubes were an unnecessary expense that would take up space in a suitcase. And after one trip spent traveling with them, I was converted.

Compartmentalizing my trip into events made it easier to pack smarter and avoid overpacking. Since I could visualize — and thereby had to acknowledge — that I was bringing four matching pants options for one event and none for another, I was able to course-correct while packing. It also meant that on the morning of a particular event, I wasn't unzipping fifteen pockets to find the right pair of socks, a pair of underwear, the barrette I swore I packed, and anything else I had once imagined with this particular outfit. Just by adding in individual dedicated cubes, I cut both my packing time and my daily getting-ready time to a third of what it has been in the past. I also started keeping all my dirty laundry in a cube once I no longer needed the items from each event, making laundry at home faster and easier.

Packing cubes are an especially good idea if you're going on a trip with multiple stops. For instance, if I'd had them on my 12-day road trip through the south of France, I wouldn't have had to make unpacking and re-packing all of my things a nightly routine.

Alternatives to the Calpak cubes

I personally like the look and structured nature of Calpak's set in a suitcase, but if you're looking for something more lightweight, you may want to check out the Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Tech Cubes ($39.95) made out of breathable, translucent fabric. If you're looking for an option that actively compresses your clothes so you can fit as much as possible, you may want to check out the Eagle Creek Pack-It Compression Cubes ($36.95). And, lastly, if $50 is still not justifiable for you no matter how good-looking the products, you can find a set of four by AmazonBasics for $19.72 on Amazon.

The bottom line

All in all, I can't recommend using packing cubes enough. I've dreaded packing for years, but my set from Calpak has cut my packing time down to a third of what it used to be. I'm also no longer spending 40 minutes getting ready in the mornings because I can't find anything, forgetting essentials, or repacking my suitcase every night just to keep things manageable.

How to delete games on your Nintendo Switch to free up storage space, and keep your saved data

$
0

Nintendo Switch Lite

  • You can delete games on a Nintendo Switch right from your home screen, and delete saved data from the Settings menu.
  • The Switch only comes with 32 GB of storage space by default, so if you aren't playing certain games anymore, you can remove them to free up space.
  • Your saved data won't be deleted automatically when you delete a Nintendo Switch game, so you can always reinstall it and resume playing.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The Nintendo Switch is a great console, but it only takes a few games to fill up all its storage space with digital downloads.

The Switch only comes with 32 GB by default. Something like "Team Sonic Racing," which requires 6.6GB of space, is an average-sized game. On the other hand, there are behemoths like "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," which takes up 13.4GB — nearly half the Switch's space.

So, unless you've upgraded your Switch's storage capacity with a micro SD card, you'll probably need to delete some Switch games from time to time.

You can delete a game's program data, which takes up the most space. Optionally, you can also delete its saved data (which contains all your progress in the game) to free up a bit more space.

But don't worry, you can always reinstall your games for free later.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Nintendo Switch (From $299.99 at Best Buy)

SanDisk Ultra 256 GB SD card (For $37.50 at Amazon)

How to delete games on a Nintendo Switch

1. From the Switch home screen, scroll to the game you want to delete. If you have enough games and apps, you might need to select the "All Software" icon at the right end of the home menu to see everything you have on your device.

IMG_5865

2. Once you've found the game you want to delete, press the plus (+) button on the right-hand Joy-Con controller or the minus (-) button on the left. If you're using a Pro Controller, or another controller that doesn't use Joy-Cons, the plus and minus buttons will still be on the right and left, respectively.

3. Select "Manage Software" in the menu that appears.

4. Click "Delete Software" and then confirm your choice.

IMG_5866

And that's it, the game is gone.

But it's not lost forever. You can even leave a shortcut to re-download the game at any time, by selecting "Archive Software" instead of "Delete Software." Archiving a game does remove its data from your console, but leaves its icon and your save data on the homepage. This is great if you just want to clear space temporarily.

If you want to fully delete the game, save data and all, it will free up more space, but you'll have to start from scratch if you ever download it again.

How to delete saved game data off a Nintendo Switch

1. From the bottom toolbar on the home screen, open the Settings menu.

2. Select "Data Management."

3. Click "Manage Save Data/Screenshots," and then "Delete Save Data." If you're in handheld mode, you can click "Delete Save Data" right away.

4. Select the game for which you wish to delete data.

5. You can delete the save data for a specific user profile, or select "Delete All Save Data for This Software" to erase all the save data on your device.

EGSj39RUUAAVyDi

If you ever want the game back, just redownload it from the Nintendo eShop. It'll be free, and if you didn't delete your saved data, you can pick up right where you left off.

50% of millennials have left a job for mental health reasons, a new study shows — and it speaks to some of the biggest problems plaguing the entire generation

Millennials are bringing mental health to the forefront in the workplace.

Half of millennials and 75% of Gen Z have left a job due to mental health reasons, according to a study conducted by Mind Share Partners, SAP, and Qualtrics published in Harvard Business Review. The study, which looked at mental health challenges and stigmas in the US workplace, polled 1,500 respondents ages 16 and older working full-time.

That's significantly higher than the overall percentage of respondents who have left a job for mental health reasons — 20%, according to the study. This indicates a "generational shift in awareness," wrote the authors of the report, Kelly Greenwood, Vivek Bapat, and Mike Maughan.

That shift is no surprise, considering that millennials have also become known as "the therapy generation." They're cognizant about their mental health and helping to destigmatize therapy, Peggy Drexler wrote in an essay for The Wall Street Journal.

Millennials, she said, see therapy as a form of self-improvement — and they also suffer from a desire to be perfect, leading them to seek help when they feel they haven't met their expectations.

But their inclination towards therapy also highlights some of the biggest problems plaguing the generation.

Depression and "deaths of despair" are becoming more common among millennials

Depression is on the rise among millennials— there's been a 47% increase in major depression diagnoses since 2013, according to a Blue Cross Blue Shield report. And a follow-up Blue Cross Blue Shield study found that millennials are less healthy than Gen Xers were at their age, and more likely to be less healthy as they age.

More millennials are also dying "deaths of despair" —  deaths related to drugs, alcohol, and suicide, reported Jamie Ducharme for TIME, citing a report by public-health groups Trust for America's Health and Well Being Trust. While these deaths have increased across all ages in the past 10 years, they've increased the most among younger Americans, reported Ducharme.

They claimed the lives of 36,000 American millennials in 2017 alone, according to the report. Drug overdoses are the most common cause of death.

There are a few reasons behind the uptick, one of which is that young adults are more inclined to engage in risk-taking behaviors. However, the report also identified other structural factors at play — namely the many financial problems millennials are facing: student loan debt, healthcare, childcare, and an expensive housing market.

These four costs are part of The Great American Affordability Crisis plaguing millennials that's putting them financially behind.

Burnout is also a problem

Cases of burnout have also been increasing at an alarming rate over recent years, reported Business Insider's Ivan De Luce. The World Health Organization recently classified burnout as a syndrome, medically legitimizing the condition for the first time.

It's a growing problem in today's workplace because of trends like rising workloads, limited staff and resources, and long hours — particularly for millennials, who consider themselves the "burnout generation."

In fact, 86% percent of overall respondents in the Mind Share Partners, SAP, and Qualtrics study said a company's culture should support mental health. "Mental health is becoming the next frontier of diversity and inclusion, and employees want their companies to address it," wrote the authors.

They added: "It is not surprising then that providing employees with the support they need improves not only engagement but also recruitment and retention, whereas doing nothing reinforces an outdated and damaging stigma."

'Why does my Apple Watch die so fast?': How to improve the battery life on your Apple Watch in 7 ways

apple watch workout

Compared to other smartwatches, the Apple Watch does not have a particularly robust battery life.

An Apple Watch lasts for just 18 hours, which means you need to charge it daily. Most people charge it overnight, which is why it doesn't have a built-in sleep tracking app like many other smartwatches and fitness bands.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Apple Watch Series 5 (From $399.99 at Best Buy)

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

Why your Apple Watch battery dies so fast, and how to fix it

If your watch isn't lasting all the way through the day, it's likely that you are using the watch's battery a lot more aggressively than the average user. But there are several things you can do to extend the battery life.

Here are the seven best ways to improve your Apple Watch battery and get more out of a single charge.

SEE ALSO: The Apple Watch Series 5 is available now from Best Buy, Apple, and more for $399 and up

Reduce the Wake Screen time, or turn the feature off

When you raise your wrist to see your watch or tap the screen, it "wakes" the display for a short time.

If you have the wake time set to 70 seconds, that will drain the battery quickly. You should set it to 15 seconds instead.

1. Start the Watch app on your iPhone.

2. On the "My Watch" tab, tap "General."

3. Tap "Wake Screen."

4. Tap "Wake for 15 seconds."

You can also turn off the Wake Screen on Wrist Raise feature, so your watch will only wake the display when you tap the screen or turn the Digital Crown.

Simply disable the "Wake Screen on Wrist Raise" option at the top of the screen.

Re-pair your Apple Watch and iPhone

If your battery is running out faster than it should, it's possible that there's something wrong with how your watch and phone are paired.

You can resolve a lot of issues by un-pairing your watch and then re-pairing it as a new watch, which should wipe out any of the corruption that caused the battery glitch.

Here's how to do it.

1. Start the Watch app on your iPhone.

2. On the "My Watch" tab, tap your watch at the top of the screen.

3. Tap the little "i" to the right of your watch information.

4. Tap "Unpair Apple Watch" and then confirm your choice.

Now that your watch is no longer paired to your phone, follow the instructions in our article "How to pair an Apple Watch with your iPhone" to set up your watch as a new device.

Turn off some push notifications

Sending a lot of notifications to your watch can also seriously drain your battery. You should only enable the most essential notifications.

1. Start the Watch app on your iPhone

2. On the "My Watch" tab, tap "Notifications."

3. For each app listed on the Notifications page, tap the app and specify whether it should be allowed to send notifications. Some apps default to "Mirror my iPhone." If that's the case, change the setting to "Custom," and you will be able to fine-tune the notifications.

Manually stop workouts at the end of an exercise routine

When the Apple Watch is in workout mode, it uses a little extra battery power, since it measures your heart rate continuously, instead of every few minutes.

If your watch doesn't realize your workout has ended for a while, it can keep running at higher power longer than needed.

Instead, get in the habit of ending a workout manually by swiping the screen to the right and tapping "End." For more information, see our article "How to start a workout on your Apple Watch in 2 different ways."

Turn off Background App Refresh

When Background App Refresh is on, apps can exchange data between the iPhone and Apple Watch, so they always have current data when needed.

This can affect battery life, of course, so you can turn the feature off entirely, or select specific apps.

1. Start the Watch app on your iPhone.

2. On the "My Watch" tab, tap "General."

3. Tap "Background App Refresh."

4. On the Background App Fresh page, you can disable the feature entirely by swiping the button at the top of the screen to the left. Or, you can enable and disable specific apps so only the apps most important to you get refreshed automatically.

Turn on Reduce Motion

This feature controls some graphical effects and animations which can drain the battery.

1. Start the Watch app on your iPhone.

2. On the "My Watch" tab, tap "General."

3. Tap "Accessibility."

4. Tap "Reduce Motion."

5. Turn on "Reduce Motion" by swiping the button to the right.

Get your Apple Watch serviced

If you have tried all these tips and your Apple Watch is still unable to last all the way through the day, it's likely that there's a hardware problem with your Apple Watch — the battery may even be defective. Contact Apple customer support for servicing.

  • Just as we naturally adjust our wardrobes to adapt to cooler temperatures, our skin-care routines could use a reboot to help our skin adjust to the colder, drier climate.
  • To help you transition your skin-care routine from summer to fall, we're sharing the best tips and tricks skin-care scientists actually swear by to keep their skin healthy through the fickle fall weather.
  • Below find 10 of the best tips and tricks for great fall skin, according to 18 scientists from Procter & Gamble.

With the weather cooling down, you've probably already thought about changing your wardrobe — swapping out tanks and shorts for cozy knits and long pants. Sweater weather means more than just ditching your cutoffs though. If you want to keep that summer glow, you'll need to update your skin- and body-care routines to keep up with the cooler, drier fall air.

And who better to help you make that transition than skin-care scientists from Procter & Gamble, parent company of popular personal-care brands like Native, SK-II, and Olay. We're sharing some of the best fall skin-care tips, according to 18 Procter & Gamble skin-care scientists themselves. From adding new products to your regimen to getting creative with how you moisturize, they shared plenty of helpful tips and tricks that'll help transition skin from summer to fall.

Some of the products included may be ones that these scientists developed themselves, though many are ones they swear by in their own lives regardless of brand. Where they have not suggested specific brands, we offer recommendations based on our own expertise. If you're looking to transform your skin-care routine for fall, but don't know where to start, keep reading.

Below you'll find 10 tips and tricks for maintaining healthy skin this fall, according to skin-care scientists:

Show your feet some TLC

Aquaphor Healing Ointment, available at Amazon, $11.89

Feet are often overlooked when it comes to body care, but after long days spent in stuffy shoes, your feet need some extra attention to get rid of calluses, blisters, and dry skin. Nicole Russell, research specialist at Procter & Gamble, swears by Aquaphor to keep her feet feeling soft.

"I apply Aquaphor to my feet and then put socks on to help keep my feet moisturized," she said. "I will also use feet exfoliating masks to help exfoliate my feet."

Lather on the body lotion

Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion, 2-pack, available at Amazon, $18.39

Dry air can really dehydrate your skin. To keep it at bay, use a really hydrating moisturizer — and use it often.

"I use Cetaphil Lotion ALL over my body after showering," Procter & Gamble Section Head Angelica Brown said. The non-greasy formula is super-hydrating, but still lightweight enough to use on your face as well as your body.

Check out our guide to the best body moisturizers you can buy for even more recommendations.

Exfoliate and hydrate for maximum moisture

Fresh Brown Sugar Scrub, available at Sephora, $39

Moisturizing is great for dry skin, but exfoliating every so often can help your moisturizer work even better. Skin feels immediately softer after sloughing off dead skin cells and adding lotion or oil to the skin after exfoliating will retain moisture for a supersoft feel.

Tori Moore, scientist at Procter & Gamble, knows the power of this combination. "I really like to focus on hydration and exfoliation because ash is nothing to play with as the season changes!" she said.

Halima Moncrieffe, PhD, assistant professor of pediatrics at Procter & Gamble, also prioritizes exfoliation in the fall, though her product of choice is a facial brush. With exfoliants, she cautions to watch "for any changes that may be caused through overuse like excess oils or outbreaks."

We recommend theFresh Brown Sugar Scrubbecause it uses a combination of natural ingredients that exfoliate and moisturize all in one.

You can find even more recommendations for great body scrubs in our guide here

Use a heavy oil to counter dryness

Nutiva Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, available at Amazon, $8.47

Coconut oil can do it all. While many use it in the kitchen, its hydrating, antibacterial, and antifungal properties make it safe and healthy for use on skin too. When the weather cools down, Shameika Wilmington, senior scientist at Procter & Gamble, turns to heavy oils to keep her face moisturized. There are many different coconut oils to choose from, but this one has over5,500 5-star reviews on Amazonfor its high quality and affordable price.

If you don't love coconut oil, check out our guide to the best body oils you can buy for more great options.

Add retinol to your regimen to keep skin looking fresh

Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Retinol Cream, available at Amazon, $24.97

Whether your skin-care concern is acne or wrinkles, retinol promises a fix. The (almost magical) ingredient can help mitigate the signs of aging, acne, hyperpigmentation, and more. Tori Moore, scientist at Procter & Gamble, calls the ingredient "the secret sauce to smooth, younger-looking, even-toned skin."

Check out our guide to the best retinol products you can buy to find a retinol product that's right for you.

Drink water to hydrate from the inside out

S'well Stainless Steel Bottle, available at Amazon, $28

At the end of the day, what we put inside our bodies is just as important as what we put on the outside. That's why Halima Moncrieffe, PhD, assistant professor of Pediatrics at Procter & Gamble, makes sure to drink lots of water to keep skin feeling fresh.

"Healthy skin comes from the inside out," she said. "I like to keep hydrated with filtered water  that I carry around in a metal bottle to reduce chemicals from plastic." We recommend S'well water bottles to anyone looking for a practical stainless steel option in fun colors and designs.

If you don't have a water bottle, check out our guide to the best water bottles you can buy to find one that's right for you.

Use an old-school, hydrating formula

Astral Moisturizing Cream, available at Amazon, $10.93

Astral cream has been around for more than 60 years, and its formula has stayed the same the whole time. So it's clear that people find it effective. Halima Moncrieffe, PhD, assistant professor of pediatrics at Procter & Gamble, includes this popular British product in her cold-weather body-care routine to keep skin "glowing and protected against the elements."

Add vitamin E to speed up skin repair

M-61 Supersoothe E Cream, available at Blue Mercury, $68

Antioxidant vitamin E is said to combat free radicals and help repair skin damage. "I like to return to a heavier vitamin E cream as my main moisturizer and then layer a thin sunscreen product on top of that," Procter & Gamble Research Specialist Nicole Russel said. This soothing cream from Bluemercury's in-house brand,M-61, has a rich texture that'll nourish dry skin.

Double up on moisturizing products

Sky Organics Shea Butter, available at Amazon, $14.95

Depending on how dry your skin gets in the cold weather, it could benefit you to double up on moisturizing agents, like lotions and creams. Lola Kelly Smalls, beauty clinical section head at Procter & Gamble, lives by this method. "I will layer up a petrolatum based product and/or shea butter with lotion to ensure that my skin stays protected and moist," she said. Over 1,500 Amazon shoppers give this product 5 stars. One shopper even saidthis shea butter"saved [their] dry winter skin in a matter of one day."

Use a moisturizing body wash in the shower

Olay Ultra Moisture Body Wash, available at Amazon, $8.48

Some body washes can strip skin of natural oils, so in the fall opt for one that includes hydrating ingredients to keep moisture in. Tina Allen, beauty clinical trial manager at Procter & Gamble, has been on the Personal Cleansing Clinical Team for most of her 11 years at the company. After being involved in many Olay Body Wash clinical studies over the years, she still goes back to this moisturizing option from the brand. She likes to follow up with Olay Quench Lotion to lock the hydration in.

But Procter & Gamble scientists aren't the only ones who champion the Ultra Moisture Body Wash — more than 1,000 reviewers on Amazon give the product 5 stars.

(Editor's note: Products listed are Procter & Gamble products.)

The next great mental health app will look like Pokemon Go, according to a Silicon Valley psychologist

  • Dozens of mental health apps are available in the App Store, which remind users to drink water, take note of their feelings, and more.
  • Apps like SuperBetter adopt aspects of traditional games, like powerups and quests.
  • According to a Silicon Valley mental health professional, the future of mental health apps is to become more like successful games.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

You probably wouldn't think of chugging a glass of water, or talking to another person as "power-ups," but app SuperBetter is reframing mental health upkeep as a game.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the US, affecting 40 million adults, a potentially huge market for apps that claim to help alleviate symptoms to tap into. Anxiety is already a big business, with the rise of products including fidget spinners, weighted blankets, coloring books, and more.

Other apps, like Happify, also use the trend of gamification as a way to market anti-anxiety practices, like meditation and overcoming negative thoughts. In Happify, you get silver or gold medals for successfully completing steps, while in SuperBetter you can do power-ups, battle bad guys, and complete quests.

Dr. Cameron Sepah, a psychologist who works primarily with tech executives and VCs in his San Francisco private practice, believes that "digital therapeutics," like these apps, are the future of mental healthcare, because they are more easily scaleable and accessible than traditional therapy. He says that the next generation of mental health apps won't look like traditional treatments, instead they will be more like games.

"The next great mental health app will look like Pokemon Go, and SuperBetter is the closest I've seen so far," he told Business Insider in a phone call.

Here's how these game-like mental health apps work:

SEE ALSO: 'Dopamine fasting' is a new Silicon Valley trend, but some people are already taking it too far

Superbetter is a "way of living gamefully in real life," according to its FAQ. Healthy activities are put into typical video game language, so power-ups are positive actions that make you feel better, quests are small steps toward goals, and bad guys are anything that gets in the way of those goals.

According to Dr. Sepah, applying gaming terms to anxiety symptoms can encourage you "not to escape your real life, but play the game of life."

Dr. Sepah says that the biggest challenge is digitizing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), which has been proven to be effective, but can also be "boring."

CBT is a type of talk therapy that can help people cope with stressful situations and identify negative thinking.

Source: Mayo Clinic

For Dr. Sepah, the key to determining if an app like this is worth your time is if it uses evidence-based treatments. Ideally, the app will run studies to validate what it's doing.

In an email, CEO Keith Wakeman told Business Insider "SuperBetter is one of the very small percent of mental health and wellbeing apps that have been evaluated in studies published in peer reviewed scientific journals."

A randomized trial conducted by The University of Pennsylvania found that using the app for 30 days "significantly reduced symptoms of depression and anxiety."

An NIH study at Ohio State University found that the symptoms of teens with concussions improved more while playing SuperBetter for 3-6 weeks than a control group.

SuperBetter and Happify both emphasize the scientific basis of the apps.

Unlike SuperBetter, Happify does not list research that specifically studies the app's impact on anxiety symptoms. It does, however, have a board of experts including PhDs and MDs.

Source: Happify

Happify also uses mindfulness and self monitoring, both of which Dr. Sepah said have also proven useful for managing anxiety.

Apps that turn anxiety treatment into games can seem childish, but Dr. Sepah says they are likely the future of mental healthcare for people of all ages.

Dr. Sepah noted that if you want an app to have daily, active users, it must be fun, and anxiety treatments are not necessarily fun.

Rewards and in-game achievements may seem juvenile, but they keep people coming back, Dr. Sepah says.

As talking about mental health becomes less stigmatized, maybe we'll see more people using online treatments.

Tatiana Santo Domingo

Monaco is known across the globe for its wealthy residents, luxurious yacht shows, and for being the home of Europe's longest-ruling royal family

Although Monaco is one of the smallest countries in the world, it is also one of the richest per capita. According to Fox Business, Monaco has a wealth per capita of $2.1 million. A zero income tax policy in the country attracts the super-rich to its shores and an estimated 32% of Monaco residents are millionaires.

One member of the Monegasque royal family who is well known within high society and the fashion elite is Tatiana Santo Domingo.

The granddaughter of a wealthy beer brewing tycoon, the American-born heiress has a net worth of $2 billion. Forbes confirmed to Business Insider that, as of October 7, 2019, Santo Domingo is the richest citizen of Monaco. (There are other residents of Monaco, who are not citizens, with even higher net worths.)

Even as a member of one of the world's elite royal families, the heiress leads a relatively private life.

Tatiana Santo Domingo, otherwise known by her married name Tatiana Casiraghi, was born in New York City on November 24, 1983.

She was raised in Geneva, Switzerland, but has lived in Paris, Rio, France, and London throughout her life.

Her grandfather, Julio Mario Santo Domingo, was named the second-richest man in Colombia by Forbes in 2011, before his death that same year.

As the owner of Bavaria, one of the largest breweries in South America, he later traded his ownership for a 15% stake in SABMiller, making the entire Santo Domingo family extremely wealthy.

The American-born heiress attended Institut Le Rosey, an exclusive boarding school in Switzerland.

The elite boarding school is one of the most expensive schools in the world. The price to attend is as much as $130,000 annually for tuition and boarding. The school is also the oldest in Switzerland. One of the campus' buildings, the Château du Rosey, was built in the 14th century, while the school was founded in 1880.

At the time of his marriage to Tatiana, Andrea Casiraghi was second in line to become the Prince of Monaco. He is now fourth in line.

The couple reportedly began dating in 2006 before tying the knot in 2013. Their wedding was a small yet high society affair.

The bride wore a V-neck Missoni dress with three-quarter-length sleeves and flat silver sandals, while Santo Domingo's bridesmaids wore designer dresses from Dolce & Gabbana and Valentino.

A few months before the royal couple married on August 31, 2013, Santo Domingo gave birth to her first son, Alexandre Andrea Stefano Casiraghi, nicknamed "Sacha."

As Santo Domingo and Casiraghi were not married when their first son was born, he was not originally given a place in the Monegasque line of succession.

In accordance with Monaco's rules about legitimacy and eligibility to the throne, legitimate heirs must be related by birth to the ruler, and their parents must be married. However, when the two wed in 2013, Sacha became fifth in line to the throne.

Casiraghi and Santo Domingo now have two more children — daughter India, age 4, and son Maximilian Rainier, born in 2018.

Founded in 2011, Muzungu Sisters collects and resells sustainable and ethically sourced goods from 17 artisan communities across the world.

The brand's website claims that purchases "stimulate local economies" in India, Morocco, Peru, South Africa, Colombia, and more.

Dresses, tops, and skirts on the site hover around $150 to $300, while the brand's iconic basket bags go for around $350.

According to the heiress' biography on the Muzungu Sisters website, Tatiana Santo Domingo lives in London with her husband, their three children, and the family's two dogs.

When she's not attending fashion industry events or spending time with her royal family members, Santo Domingo enjoys visiting her favorite haunts in New York, Paris, and London.

In 2015, the heiress revealed to W Magazine that her favorite spots for going out on the town were Bar Pitti and Indochine in New York, Ferdi in Paris, and Maggie's Club in London.

When asked about the three items every woman should have in her wardrobe, Santo Domingo said "a good pair of jeans, a pair of Charlotte Olympia heels, and a Muzungu Sisters shawl" were her necessities.

As for her favorite footwear, the free-spirited billionaire said she prefers to be barefoot whenever possible.

Though Tatiana Santo Domingo is unlikely to ever be Princess of Monaco, it is nevertheless intriguing to know how this enormously wealthy member of the royal family lives — especially now that she is officially the wealthiest Monegasque citizen in the world.

Apple Watch

Despite all the capabilities of an Apple Watch, it's not very good at playing video.

There's no YouTube app for the watch, for example, and for the most part, you can't watch videos on your wrist.

But there is one significant exception — you can play videos embedded in SMS and iMessages.

Here's how to do it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Apple Watch Series 5 (From $429 at Best Buy)

How to watch videos on an Apple Watch

1. To watch a video on your Apple Watch, it must be a video file that's embedded in a text message (SMS or iMessage). It can't be a link (like a YouTube URL), and it can only be sent via a message. You can receive a message from someone else or you can send a video in a text message to yourself from your iPhone.

2. When you receive the message, tap the video thumbnail. The video should start to play.

video 1

3. Tap the screen to pause the video. Tap again to resume playback.

video 2

4. You can adjust the volume with the Digital Crown.

5. When you're finished, tap "Done."

You can return to the message in your Messages app to watch the video again later.

Unfortunately, you can't play video from a link on your Apple Watch. If you try, you'll generally get a message that says your browser does not currently recognize the video file.

Yes, Apple just killed iTunes — here's what that means for your library of music, movies, and TV shows (AAPL)

macos music

  • Apple is nixing the iTunes app in the next version of its Mac software, which launched on Monday.
  • With macOS Catalina, the contents of iTunes will now be split up between three apps: Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Apple TV.
  • Here's what will happen to your library of music, movies, podcasts, and shows.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

It's official: iTunes is dead.

Apple announced last June at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference that the standalone iTunes app would be killed off when the company rolled out its new macOS operating system. On Monday, that software began rolling out to Mac users.

Under macOS Catalina, as the new version of the Mac operating system is called, Apple is nixing iTunes in favor of three apps: Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, and Apple TV.

For die-hard iTunes users — the people who have been storing music, movies, and shows in there for years and have an extensive library built up — this might sound scary. What will become of all your stuff?

Don't worry — it probably isn't going anywhere. Here's what will happen to iTunes in macOS Catalina.

SEE ALSO: Here are the biggest changes coming in Catalina, Apple's next big software update for Macs

Apple Music will become the home for all things, well, music.

Apple is redesigning the Music app for Macs to accommodate the elimination of iTunes.

Now your entire music library will live inside one app, including downloaded songs, purchased songs, and songs ripped from a CD, according to Apple.

Plus, you can still buy songs if you really want to: Apple will still offer an iTunes Store.

The Apple TV app is coming to the Mac.

Starting this fall, the Apple TV app will live on all of your devices — iPhone, iPad, Mac, and, of course, your Apple TV.

That means that rather than renting movies and TV shows through iTunes on your Mac, you'll watch everything through the Apple TV app. Apple said that more than 100,000 iTunes shows and movies will be available to rent or buy through this new app.

The app will include Apple TV channels, so you can stream shows and movies from your favorite channels and services (although that's less necessary on a Mac where you can also just watch them on the channel's website).

On top of that, the app will contain Apple's original streaming service, Apple TV Plus, once it becomes available this fall.

Apple Podcasts will now be a one-stop shop for all of your podcasts.

The way it works right now, there's a Podcasts app on the iPhone, but there's also a Podcasts section of iTunes on the Mac. This doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and thankfully, Apple is changing that.

Now there will be a standalone Podcasts app on the Mac that should work the same as the one on your phone. Apple said it would offer more than 700,000 shows, as well as perks like the ability to get a notification when there's a new episode of one of your favorite shows.

Plus, the app will feature curated collections and better search tools to help you find new podcasts to listen to.

There's one more crucial change involving iTunes coming in macOS Catalina.

You know how right now, when you plug your iPhone into your Mac, iTunes opens automatically? Isn't it annoying?

Well, Apple seems to have realized this because in macOS Catalina, nothing will happen when you plug your phone into your computer. Seriously — Apple even did a demo of this onstage at WWDC to prove it.

Now when you plug your phone in, you'll see your device in the sidebar of your Finder and nothing more.

However, Apple isn't eliminating using a cable to sync your phone and computer altogether — you'll still be able to sync your media that way, but you'll do it through the individual apps for music, movies, and podcasts.

The best baby carriers you can buy

$

  • A baby carrier lets you and your little one explore the world together. You'll be glad to have your hands free and your child nestled close, while babies love feeling warm and secure.
  • The Ergobaby OMNI 360 All-in-One Carrier is our top choice because it's adaptable, comfortable, and very easy to use.

The first few years of a child's life are a unique and wonderful time for his or her parents, but it would be dishonest to say that the baby years don't also make life more complicated. The simple act of leaving the house to run an errand, grab lunch with a friend, or even just to take a walk becomes a much more involved process, requiring everything from diaper bags to bottles to bibs to a spare set of clothes in preparation for inevitable messes. While the modern marketplace is cluttered with baby gear and accessories that you can skip, there are a few items the savvy parent should have on hand. A great baby carrier ranks near the top of this list.

With a baby carrier, you and your young child can venture out into the world — whether for a walk around the block or an all-day adventure through a foreign city — with ease and comfort. Baby carriers keep your hands free while keeping your child warm and secure, offering you convenience while strengthening the bond between you and the little one.

By using your hips, shoulders, and core to support the weight of your child, a baby carrier minimizes the strain put on your body. They are also, of course, designed with child's ergonomic needs in mind, keeping a baby properly supported and comfortable at the same time.

When choosing the right baby carrier for you and your child, first consider the child. That is to say think about your baby's age and size, and about how quickly he or she is growing. Some baby carriers are ideal for newborns, while others cannot even safely be used by a child until he or she is at least six months old. Try to find a baby carrier that will provide you years of use, but don't ever choose one not suitable for your child's current size. They can "grow into" hand me down clothes, but not a carrier that can't offer proper neck support.

Then think about the types of activities in which you and your child will participate while the baby is strapped to you. A hiking baby carrier might be a ridiculous choice if all you tend to do is run errands and visit friends and family, but a cloth baby wrap is equally a poor choice for the one-year-old coming along for a trek.

Once you have considered your child's needs and the activities during which you want to keep your child close and your hands free, take a look at the baby carriers on our list. Surely one or two of them will suit your needs, with design preference and budget informing your final decision.

The best baby carrier overall

The Ergobaby OMNI 360 baby carrier can be used to tote little ones along in any logical position you can think of on your back, hip, or chest.

A lot of baby carriers pride themselves on being three-position carriers. Some highlight how they allow a baby to ride on your back or front with equal comfort. Others tout their face-in or face-out baby position options. The Ergobaby OMNI 360 All-in-One carrier cuts through all the noise and simply calls itself an "all position carrier." I am an owner of this carrier and I can tell you this firsthand: Ergobaby is not lying. Face-in or face-out on your chest? No problem. Want the baby on your back? Easy. Either hip preferable? It works for both.

Now let's talk carrying capacity. You could use this carrier to bring most babies home from the hospital, as it's rated safe for kids weighing seven pounds and up. And I could just about still use it with my four-and-a-half-year-old because it can handle kids weighing as much as 45 pounds. Though technically the brand doesn't advise use above four years, for the record.

A built-in tuck-away hood can keep your little one out of the sun and wind and will even resist light rain, and it can also be used as a nursing cover so moms can feed their babies without ever taking the kid out.

OK, so your baby/toddler has all these positioning options and can be covered and fed and snuggled and that's all great. But what about you? Well, you'll appreciate the broad waist belt that distributes weight, the lumbar pad that helps prevent sore backs, and the soft yet sturdy shoulder straps.

All straps and belts and such can be adjusted easily to accommodate an adult's waist that measures anywhere from 26 inches to 52 inches, while the shoulder straps can adjust from 28 to 46 inches. And going back to the waist belt, you can wear it high or low, which is great for personal comfort preference and superb for women recovering from C-sections.

I'm not the only fan out there, either. On Amazon, one mom speaks for many when she relates having tried a plethora of other options only to find this one "perfect and worth every penny" based on her comfort, her son's comfort, and the extra features like the hood and a pocket for stashing a phone and keys and such.

A writer from BreastFeedingNeeds said this Ergobaby carrier "can do it all," comfortably carrying babies and toddlers in any position you'd want.

We previously recommended the ERGObaby Three Position ADAPT Baby Carrier as our top pick, but the new 360-model is even better because it's more versatile.

Pros: Multiple position options, large padding and adjustable straps, cool mesh keeps parent and child comfortable

Cons: Expensive but worth it

The best low cost baby carrier

The Infantino Flip Advanced 4-in-1 Convertible Baby Carrier offers the same baby support, parent comfort, and versatility of use as baby carriers that cost four times as much money.

Let's start with the drawbacks on this one, because they are relatively few in the scheme of things. The Infantino Flip Advanced 4-in-1 Convertible Baby Carrier is only rated for use with babies weighing between eight and 32 pounds, so for smaller newborns or premature babies, it's not going to work in those first few weeks. And that 32-pound maximum capacity is a good deal smaller than what's offered by many other carriers. Also, the leg straps can be a bit confusing to configure.

But here's the thing: This baby carrier costs thirty dollars. Yes, you could pay significantly more than that and get a carrier with a 40-pound weight capacity and with simpler adjustment points, but think long and hard about the value there. Will you even still be using a baby carrier when your child is that large? And are those few minutes of time spent readjusting the unit now and then to accommodate the growing child worth the savings? The answers are likely no and yes, respectively, so go ahead and save some cash if your family is on a budget.

The Infantino Flip Advanced 4-in-1 Convertible Baby Carrier can carry a baby face in or out on your chest or face in on your back. They call it a "four position" carrier because in the chest face-in configuration you can use a neck and head support flap or fold it out of the way, so really it's more of a three position carrier, but that's not really a strike against it, just a matter of semantics.

Parents love this carrier, giving it an average rating of 4.5 stars with hundreds of reviews logged. One mommy loves how easy it is to adapt the shoulder and waist straps to her frame and "to daddy's size as well." Another mom reports that she puts her son "in it while doing dishes, vacuuming, walking, really anything."

A writer with Baby Carrier HQ praises the Infantino seat's "natural positioning that helps to keep your baby happy," while a video reviewer with Positively Mommy demonstrates how easily she can remove her child from the carrier and place him back into the unit single-handedly.

Pros: Great low price tag, easy to adjust to fit different adults, inward and outward facing positions

Cons: Only suitable up to 32 pounds, leg adjustment points can be a hassle to use

The best hiking baby carrier

With the Clevr Baby Backpack 202 Cross Country Carrier on your back, you and your child will be ready to trek into the backcountry.

Hiking child carriers differ from regular baby carriers in several notable ways, and the Clevr Baby Backpack 202 Cross Country Carrier exemplifies all of these major design elements. First and foremost, as with a good hiking pack, this carrier features an extra wide waist belt and lower back support system that allows you to carry most of the pack and baby weight on your hips. The shoulder straps are also thicker and more substantial than those of most standard baby carriers.

Quite unlike most baby carriers, this and other similar hiking baby backpacks do not carry the child directly against the parent, but instead, house the child in his or her own compartment. This snug and secure compartment is outfitted with internal straps that hold the baby in place, and the child can be protected against sunshine using a built-in hood and even against rain with moveable plastic panels.

Also unlike standard baby carriers, the Clevr Baby Backpack 202 Cross Country Carrier has a large storage pocket that can accommodate diapers, snacks, spare clothes, a camera, and other such sundries. There are also two side pockets perfect for an adult's water bottle or a baby bottle. When you need to take a break from the trail, you can set the backpack down without removing your child thanks to its folding stand.

Pros: Good price for category, excellent hip and shoulder strap system, good storage pockets

Cons: Not suitable for smaller infants, not comfortable for shorter adults

The best carrier for newborn babies

The Moby Wrap Baby Carrier is the closest thing to a parent's embrace that does not actually require use of the hands.

Having used a Moby Wrap many times myself, I'm going to start out with a qualification: While this product is positioned as suitable for use with children weighing up to 35 pounds, I don't know any kid that size who is going to want to be wrapped up in bands of fabric and tied to his or her mom or dad (or nanny).

That said, I also know of no better system for recreating the natural feeling of a parent's embrace for kids still in their infant stage, a period during which most babies want nothing more than to be held close and fast to the chest of a loved one.

Proper use of a Moby Wrap Baby Carrier comes with a bit of a learning curve. There are no buckles to clip, straps to tighten, or snaps to secure. You simply wrap this 18-foot-long band of soft fabric around your torso and around your baby in various ways to create a sling-style carrier.

At first, using the Moby Wrap can be intimidating, as it's hard to tell if you're using it properly. With practice, though, it becomes liberating, because unlike with a two-, three-, or even four-position carrier, there are almost endless ways you can carry your child using this unique band.

A Moby Wrap Baby Carrier is a great way to help nurture the bond between a newborn and a mother or father and can be a great way to calm and soothe a child who is sick, colicky, or just generally upset. Just keep in mind that you will probably need to switch to a more traditional backpack style of carrier as the child grows.

In an article on Top10Reviews.com, a writer called the Moby Wrap one of the "most versatile" baby carrier options available. A LongLiveGrow.com reviewer called the wrap "the perfect carrier of comfort is your goal." What To Expect also places the Moby baby carrier high in its rankings.

Pros: Soothes and comforts child, highly adaptable positioning options, easy to wash

Cons: Proper use takes practice, uncomfortable for use in warm climates

The best baby carrier for parent comfort

The Stokke MyCarrier Front Baby Carrier is designed to spread a baby's weight out across its wearer's torso, with padding and adjustment points that allow for an easily customized fit.

Our first baby carrier was a Stokke, and with a few qualifications, I can say that we chose well and that I recommend the Stokke MyCarrier Front Baby Carrier. Let's talk about the issues first.

The Stokke uses a few more straps, buckles, buttons, and snaps than most baby carriers and learning how to properly adjust and secure it can be frustrating. Once you have it down, it's simple enough to use, but I definitely lost my patience a few times in the early days. Second, as the name suggests, you can only use this carrier on the front of your torso, which is great for snuggling your baby and fine for errands, social visits, and so forth, but limiting for longer wear such as an all-day tour of a city or a hike in the woods.

Those points aside, Stokke makes a fine carrier. And with all those many adjustment facets comes one extremely comfortable, secure carrier, for the record. It's remarkable how well you can customize this carrier to fit your body, creating the ideal arrangement for your own comfort even while your child is kept securely tucked into the seat in the "happy hips" position that is so natural for babies. Parents will also appreciate the two little storage pockets built into the carrier.

One satisfied mother who uses the Stokke MyCarrier Front Baby Carrier says it is "much more comfortable on [the] upper back" than many other carrier options. She also noted that she could breastfeed while her baby was in the carrier.

A review on MadeForMums.com called the Stokke a "hip-healthy baby carrier," while a writer from Magic Beans said the MyCarrier was "supportive and comfortable, with good weight distribution."

Pros: Great weight distribution, holds baby's hips in natural position, durable and well-made

Cons: Only worn on front of torso, proper use takes practice

  • The best backpacks help you stay organized and are comfortable to carry. It's not too much to ask for them to look nice, too.
  • Whether you need a bag for school, work, travel, or everyday use, there's a backpack for you here. They all boast thoughtful design, durable construction, and many color options to make you stand out in a crowd.
  • Our top pick is the Dagne Dover Dakota Backpack, a versatile bag with smart organization features.

The search for a nice backpack often lands you squarely in two camps. On the one hand, you can choose to look like you've stumbled into an 8 a.m. lecture with a large coffee in hand. On the other hand, you have a cute accessory to go along with your outfit, but you still don't have enough space to store your phone, much less a laptop.

Tote bags and other types of bags that go over one shoulder are one solution, but let's face it. It's simply more comfortable to carry a backpack and distribute the weight across your back and both shoulders.

And that's how you end up here, in our guide for the best backpacks for women. You want a bag that's practical and can carry your work, gym, or everyday essentials — or all of the above. You also want a bag with style and personality, an accessory that doesn't look like all the other backpacks in the market.

Below, you'll find our favorite picks for a backpack you'll be excited to both pack and show off. Important factors to consider are fabric construction, interior organization, and price. Do you like synthetic and more rugged materials like neoprene, nylon, and polyester? Or do you want the rich feel of leather? How many compartments do you prefer, and will you need to fit a laptop in the backpack? Do you want to spend less than $200, or is price no object?

Read on to learn why each women's backpack is the best in its category and weigh the pros and cons of each bag.

Here are the best backpacks for women:

The best backpack overall

No backpack has taken over the scene more than the Dagne Dover Dakota Backpack. The easily recognizable neoprene bag seamlessly transitions from office to gym thanks to its organization features and versatile look.

"Fusing fashion with athlete-caliber function" is what drives design at online bag startup Dagne Dover. While the brand makes a variety of bags, including laptop bags and weekenders, the best representation of form and function is in its Dakota Backpack (11.5 inches wide, 5 inches deep, 17 inches high).

The Dakota Backpack is the bag you put on in the morning when you're not exactly sure where the rest of the day will take you. What you do know is that you don't want it to look out of place, and it needs to keep your essentials organized.

It's made from a high-performance premium neoprene that's water-resistant, dries quickly, and is shock-absorbent, effectively protecting your bag's contents. The neoprene also makes an otherwise simple backpack look more sporty, tapping into a strong-as-ever athleisure trend. Dagne Dover's color curation for the backpack adds further appeal — colors rotate out, but they often lean toward dusky, muted colors, soft pastels, or bright jewel tones.

Unzip the backpack and you'll find pockets and pouches galore. There's an air mesh laptop sleeve that can fit a 13-inch laptop, three zippered pockets on the interior panel, a shoe bag, and a small zip-top pouch. The front pocket has two loops and a key leash, while there are four additional side pockets (two zippered and two open).

Insider Picks first reviewed the Dakota Backpack more than two years ago, and it's still one of our all-time favorite women's backpacks. Online reviewers are big fans of this combination of organization and style, and they carry it for a variety of uses. Students, teachers, businesswomen, and travelers all love the bag.

Pros: Soft and practical performance fabric, smart organization system

Cons: Some reviewers report that the fabric can run hot

The best leather backpack

Cuyana's Leather Backpack, like all of the brand's Italian leather goods, sits at the perfect intersection of durability, sophistication, and accessibility.

This beautiful backpack is just one of Cuyana's many highly covetable leather accessories. If you're in the market for other bags as well, go for the Classic Tote or Saddle Bag.

The backpack (12.75 inches height, 10.5 inches width, 7.75 inches depth) is made in Italy with soft and supple pebbled leather. Available in five subtle, neutral colors, it's the type of bag that can go with any outfit effortlessly.

I've owned the Blush version of the backpack for two years now and watched it weather into a bag that I appreciate even more than when I first got it. Though the leather initially feels a little stiff, it loosens up and gets softer as you wear it. The light Blush color requires more care to maintain, but if you're worried about keeping your bag clean, you also have black, burgundy, caramel, and stone to choose from.

There are two pockets on the outside, where I usually keep my work ID and subway card. The pockets are secured by strong magnetic snaps and I've never had anything fall out, but if you want to be super-cautious, I suggest keeping your belongings in the main compartment. It has a zip pocket inside and is covered by a flap top with a magnetic closure.

The straps are on the thinner side, and they can dig into your shoulders if you load the bag with heavy items. However, you'll ultimately like the thin straps because they look more put-together and sophisticated than thick straps. Two parts of the bag are adjustable, the cinch belt and the shoulder straps. By adjusting these parts, you can get a feel that's most comfortable for you.

Pros: Soft and durable leather, secure pockets

Cons: Thin straps may be uncomfortable

The best packable backpack

The Everlane Packable Backpack saves space without sacrificing style, versatility, and durability. It's made from lightweight nylon twill and available in three attractive colors.

A packable backpack is a smart accessory to bring on your travels. Since it folds into its own pocket, you won't waste valuable luggage space, but it still expands into a full-size backpack so you can carry all your day's essentials comfortably.

In order to allow them to fold, most packable backpacks are made from nylon, which can look and feel cheap. Everlane's Packable Backpack (16 inches height, 4 inches depth, 9 inches width) manages to avoid this common problem by virtue of its simple design and eye-catching color options (pink, burgundy, and sage).

It has a small front zip pocket for those accessories you need to access most often and a main compartment that can fit a 13-inch laptop. You shouldn't expect to stuff it to the brim with things, but it is a good "Goldilocks" size for carrying an assortment of accessories including a wallet, pair of headphones, water bottle, light jacket, and the like.

The slick nylon actually feels thick and surprisingly substantial, meaning it's also comfortable to carry. At the same time, it's more lightweight than a canvas or leather backpack, so you won't feel bogged down by your bag. This material is water-resistant and easy to spot clean.

Reviewers love that the backpack looks sleek enough to go basically anywhere, from a day hike to a nice sit-down dinner. Whenever you need to pack it back up, you simply turn it inside out, fold the edges in, and stuff it into the interior pocket.

Priced at $35, this versatile and convenient backpack is a great deal, but if you're looking for a slightly more luxe (but equally simple) packable bag, we also like Paravel's Fold-Up Backpack ($65).

Pros: Affordable, versatile, simple design, saves space

Cons: Unpadded, so it may not be suitable for tech devices; may be too small depending on your needs

The best luxury backpack

The distinctive Senreve Maestra Bag costs a pretty penny, but you won't regret investing — it looks sharp, has a well-designed organization system, can be worn four different ways, and comes with a lifetime warranty.

Let's address the elephant in the room: The Maestra Bag costs $895. As you can tell, it's certainly a nice-looking backpack, but is it really worth nearly $900? According to everyone who has ever made the plunge and entrusted Senreve with this commitment, the answer is an enthusiastic yes.

Senreve even managed to win over one of our editors who initially thought the price of the bag was "ridiculous." It did this by making a bag that's as practical as it is beautiful. There are eight interior compartments, including a padded tech compartment that can fit up to a 13-inch laptop and a main compartment that can fit up to a 15-inch laptop. There are also smaller, individual pockets for everything from your AirPods case to your sunglasses. The bag has a zippered top, covered by a flap top with a collar stud belt, so everything inside stays secure.

Another big draw of the bag is that it's convertible. Simply by pulling the shoulder straps up, you can turn it into a shoulder bag, crossbody, or satchel. Whether you want to switch configurations out of desire or plain necessity (e.g., when you're squeezing into a tight elevator or subway car and need to free up space), the Maestra can quickly adapt.

The original Pebbled Leather version of the bag comes in 13 colors. You can choose from a wide range, from classic black to a bright coral. Just keep an eye on availability — some colors aren't available forever. There are also different types of leather you can choose, but they're more expensive and can make the bag cost more than $1,000. Regardless of which type you opt for, all the bags are made with 100% Italian leather by craftsmen who work with top luxury brands.

In addition to the Maestra (10.25 inches height, 12.25 inches width at base, 16 inches width at top, 6.75 inches depth), there are smaller sizes, the Mini and Midi, but if you intend on carrying this bag for everyday use, the largest size, the Maestra will be the most useful for your needs.

While $900 is a lot to pay for a single bag, Senreve works with Quadpay so you can pay for your bag in four interest-free installments. Plus, it offers a lifetime warranty and will repair your bag for free in case it's ever damaged.

Pros: Sleek design, organized, convertible, many color options, comes with a lifetime warranty

Cons: Pricey, may feel bulky

The best backpack for work

The Calpak Kaya Leather Laptop Backpack is the more sleek and stylish cousin to a traditional laptop bag. The structured backpack has its own space for your laptop, with plenty of room to spare.

Sometimes you need a backpack that's designed for a specific purpose. While all the backpacks mentioned in this guide can fit laptops, the Calpak Kaya Laptop Backpack (15.5 inches height, 11.5 inches width, 4.5 inches depth) is the only one with a completely separate zippered compartment for it.

In the front pocket of the rectangular bag, you can keep things like your wallet, notebooks, and a change of clothes, while in the back pocket, you can store your laptop. By separating your work life and personal life in these compartments, you'll know exactly where everything is and feel more physically and mentally organized.

With its whipstitched trim, knotted zipper pulls, and gold hardware, it's more attractive than a traditional laptop bag but equally functional. The stiff and structured frame looks composed but also protects its contents from accidental bumps. The backpack is made from a scratch-resistant, water-resistant faux leather and comes in four colors. I own another one of the brand's backpacks and can say that this synthetic fabric holds up to the grind of regular use. That the sturdy bag also looks great is a major plus and why many women use it for work.

If and when you have to travel for work, the Kaya Laptop Laptop Backpack is ready with a back sleeve to slip over luggage handles. This sleeve feels a little tight, so it might not be easy slipping it over the handles. However, this design also means that once it is on, your backpack isn't going anywhere.

Anyone who commutes to work will find this laptop backpack useful. Since it's likely your day consists of more than just going to and from the office, you'll also appreciate its fashionable style.

Pros: Separate laptop compartment, affordable

Cons: Some reviewers report quality issues

The best convertible backpack

A practical, travel-friendly solution to your organization and comfort woes is the Lo & Sons Edgemont backpack. Carry it as a tote or backpack, to work, the airport, and beyond.

The designers at Lo & Sons, a brand known for its travel-friendly bags, seem to have thought of everything when making the Edgemont backpack (13 inches width, 14.5 inches height, 5 inches depth).

The backpack converts into a tote when you unbuckle the straps and stash them in the back pocket. Inside, there's a padded compartment that can fit a 13-inch laptop, a water bottle pocket, and other small pockets to keep your belongings organized. Best of all, this entire compartment insert is removable. Instead of rummaging in the depths of a large bag, you can take the insert out to make packing a little easier.

On the outside of each side, there are stash pockets for those accessories you need the most often, and they include a key leash. This bag is perfect for traveling, both because of these organization details and because it has an adjustable sleeve on the back to let you slip the bag onto your luggage handles.

Don't be afraid of packing the backpack to the brim. To my delight when I tested it myself, it remains comfortable to carry and feels lighter than expected. Since founder Helen Lo originally launched the company because she wanted a bag that alleviated her back pain, it shouldn't come as a surprise that the backpack is comfortable enough to carry all day. The shoulder straps are padded with memory foam for extra comfort and layered with mesh so they won't slip off your shoulders.

The bag is also eco-friendly. The polyester exterior is made from recycled plastic bottles and is water-resistant. It is lightweight and feels like canvas. Currently, it's available in two solid colors, which are fairly innocuous, and three camo prints, which have a bit more flair.

Pros: Easy to convert between backpack and tote, removable insert, water-resistant exterior, comfortable to carry

Cons: Style is more plain than other backpacks

What else we considered

  • Caraa Sport Small Studio Bag ($395): The internet loves Caraa's all-in-one backpack, which looks like a mini duffel and can be carried three different ways. The mix of materials — waterproof nylon, leather, and metal hardware — gives the bag a cool, sporty look. However, it is expensive, and you might be equally happy with another convertible bag half its price.
  • MZ Wallace Metro Backpack ($245): The quilted backpack feels light and fluffy as a cloud, and it comes in cool colors and prints. The brand is better known for its totes, but its backpacks are also worth checking out.
  • State Bags Kane Backpack ($80): The Kane is the signature backpack from State Bags, a startup that supports students and families by donating fully packed backpacks and partnering with charities and schools on social and educational initiatives. There are 21 colors to choose from and you can personalize it with symbols, patches, and pins. We also love that it costs under $100.

'What does the half-moon icon mean on an iPhone?': How to turn off Do Not Disturb mode, or unmute a specific conversation in Messages

iphone do not disturb

  • When you see a half-moon icon at the top of your iPhone's home screen, it means that you've enabled Do Not Disturb mode.
  • Do Not Disturb mode sends your calls directly to voicemail and turns off all notifications. It's easy to turn off Do Not Disturb in two different ways.
  • The half-moon icon may also appear in your Messages app — this means that you've muted a specific conversation, and it's possible to unmute it in just a few steps.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Even if you know your way around an iPhone pretty well, chances are there are some features on the device you're not really familiar with.

If you've ever picked up your iPhone and noticed a small half-moon icon in the status bar at the top of the homescreen, you might be confused about what it means and how you can get rid of it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone 11 (From $699.99 at Best Buy)

What the half-moon icon means on your iPhone, and how to turn it off

This icon means that your iPhone's Do Not Disturb feature is enabled.

When Do Not Disturb is turned on, all of your phone calls will be sent straight to voicemail. While you'll still receive texts, you won't see an alert for any new ones that come in while the feature is enabled.

In addition, none of the apps which you've allowed to send notifications will be able to do so.

If you want to disable the Do Not Disturb option, doing so is pretty easy and can be done in one of two ways.

How to turn off Do Not Disturb on your iPhone

Swipe up from the bottom of your iPhone's home screen (or from the upper right corner on the iPhone X and later) and locate the half-moon icon in the Control Center.

This small box should be dark; if it's illuminated white, Do Not Disturb is enabled and you'll need to disable it. To do so, just tap on the icon until it turns gray and you're good to go.

You can also open the Settings app on your iPhone, and then tap the Do Not Disturb tab. Simply tap the green lever to toggle the feature off.

How to unmute a conversation in Messages on your iPhone

It should be noted that you might also see the half-moon icon in your Messages app. This means that alerts are muted for that specific conversation.

To re-enable notifications, swipe left on the conversation and tap "Show Alerts." The conversation will then be unmuted.
