lyft driver

  • Lyft Express Drive is a rental car program that allows those who don't own a car to become Lyft drivers.
  • Lyft uses Hertz, Avis, and Flexdrive rental cars for the Express Drive program.
  • The cost of participating includes insurance and maintenance, and may vary based on your location (Express Drive is available in most major cities and a few smaller ones).
  • Once you make sure Lyft Express Drive is available in your area and successfully sign up to be a driver via the app, you'll be able to sign up for a rental car on Lyft's dashboard for the program, provide a refundable deposit, and start giving rides.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

If you want to drive for a ride-hailing service like Lyft or Uber, it might seem like you need to own a car — which can be a tall order, especially since that car usually has to meet certain requirements to be qualified as a vehicle, depending on the company.

That's where Lyft Express Drive comes in. In short, it's a rental program that allows those who don't own a car to become Lyft drivers.

Here's what you need to know about Lyft Express Drive.

What is Lyft Express Drive?

The Lyft Express Drive program lets those who don't own a car use rental cars from agencies — like Hertz, Avis, and Flexdrive — to give Lyft rides.

According to Lyft, the rental period is "flexible with no long-term commitment" and the costs of participating include insurance and maintenance. Your total costs will also depend on your location.

Cars are made available on a first-come, first-served basis, so timing is critical for those who wish to participate.

How to qualify for Lyft Express Drive

To participate, you have to be at least 25 years old, apply to be a Lyft driver, and meet those requirements. This includes being able to pass national and county background checks, as well as a DMV check.

You also have to be located in a place where the program is available, which includes most major cities and even a few smaller ones.

After meeting those requirements and successfully applying to be a driver through Lyft's app, you can apply for a rental car via the company's dashboard for the service, you'd be able to schedule a pickup of the rental car. At that point, you'd provide a refundable deposit and start taking rides.

The gap between the rich and the poor in the US has widened to a record high, and it mirrors the growth of 'dynastic wealth'

The gap between the rich and the poor continues to widen.

Income inequality reached a record high in 2018 since the US Census began tracking it 50 years ago, reported Taylor Telford for The Washington Post, citing the US Census 2018 American Community Survey released this week. The chasm is most prevalent in wealthy coastal states and areas with "widespread poverty," she wrote.

While the median household income in the US also reached an all-time high — just over $63,000— it's about the same as it was two decades ago when adjusted for inflation, according to Telford.

This stagnant growth underscores a 2018 report by the Pew Research Center, which found that America's middle class is shrinking — while it's stable in size, it's financial gains were "modest" compared to higher income households.

An Insider and Morning Consult survey from earlier this year also found that middle-class America isn't faring that well. Middle-class Americans are behind on homeownership and retirement savings, partly because they have debt to pay off, the survey found. Even some respondents making six figures identified as middle-class rather than affluent.

Generational wealth also continues to grow

As income inequality has continued to increase in the US over the years, many consider generational wealth to be one of its key causes.

The 15 family dynasties in the US own a combined $618 billion, according to the left-leaning Institute for Policy Studies' Billionaire Bonanza report. It examined the growing concentration of wealth in the US by looking at 15 dynastically wealthy families from the Forbes 400 list and data from the Federal Reserve Survey of Consumer Finance.

Since 1982, the combined wealth of the top three families— the Waltons, the Kochs, and the Marses— increased by 5,868%, totaling $348.7 billion, the report found.

But some billionaires are thinking twice about how they're tackling generational wealth. Bill Gates and Warren Buffett plan to give most of their money away through the Giving Pledge, instead of keeping it in the family.

Buffett has been vocal about his efforts to reduce the vast wealth sitting in the hands of a few influential people. "Dynastic wealth, the enemy of a meritocracy, is on the rise," Buffett said during a Senate Finance Committee hearing about the federal estate tax 2007. "Equality of opportunity has been on the decline."

A fitness influencer will serve nearly 5 years in jail for using 369 Instagram accounts to harass bodybuilding colleagues and allegedly faking her daughter's kidnapping

A fitness influencer has been jailed after creating at least 369 Instagram accounts to threaten and harass several colleagues and competitors in the fitness community.

Tammy Steffen, 37, has been sentenced to nearly five years in federal prison after she pled guilty back in December to charges of cyberstalking and sending online threats, according to the Department of Justice. A federal investigation found that Steffen repeatedly called, texted, emailed, and contacted via social media at least six people over the course of two years.

She made threats to their lives and the lives of their friends and family, and tried to discredit their professional reputations, federal prosecutors say. Steffen's threats included a message telling a victim she planned to "slice you up into little pieces," and a text to another saying, "all hell is gonna rain fire down on your world like never seen before," followed by a picture of a woman holding two knives with the caption, "I'm coming," according to the police report.

However, these threats over social media and text may have been just the tip of iceberg in Steffen's alleged scheme to take revenge against competitors and former colleagues in the bodybuilding community.

Florida authorities allege Steffen organized two separate incidents in July 2018 that she tried to pin on a former business partner, according to police reports. In the first incident, Steffen reported to police that a headless doll was left on the front porch of her home, with a note inside the doll that read, "new toy for the kids."

Just five days later, Steffen reported to police that someone tried to kidnap her 12-year-old daughter, according to The Washington Post. Steffen claimed that the person grabbed her daughter's arm and tried to drag her into the woods "against her will." She also pointed authorities toward a black laptop cover found near the location of the attempted kidnapping, in which a notepad was found with Steffen's personal information on it, according to the arrest report.

When police later questioned the child, they said she asked them what would happen to her mother if she told the truth.

However, authorities say they discovered Steffen had purchased the same kind of laptop cover and notepad a few days earlier at a local Walmart. Police say they also found a witness who overheard Steffen and a friend discussing the plan to leave the headless doll on her own porch.

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office arrested Steffen in July 2018 and charged her with filing a false police report, tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, and tampering with a witness. Following her arrest, Steffen told her daughter to take the blame for the idea of fabricating the kidnapping, and told her she wouldn't get in trouble, according to police reports.

Steffen will serve her nearly five-year federal sentence after she finishes serving time related to the false kidnapping report. The Federal Bureau of Investigation didn't arrest Steffen until November on the charges of stalking and cyberbullying, the Washington Post reports.

Steffen once ran a business for training and coaching bodybuilders and bikini competitors called "Beyond Fit Bikini" out of Florida. The company hasn't posted on Instagram since January 10 (five days before Steffen was arrested), and its website is not up and running.

How to properly clean an iPad's charging port when it won't charge

0
0

ipad charging port clean

  • To clean an iPad charging port properly, care must be taken and the best starting point is to not physically touch it at all.
  • If your iPad can't charge, one of the most common causes is a dirty charging port.
  • The charging port is a very sensitive and sophisticated piece of your iPad's hardware, but cleaning it is an easy fix.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Apple makes most of its devices relatively rugged considering how technical they are. Their main weakness is the charging port. Not only does it have sensitive wires that need to be perfectly aligned to charge properly, it's also a pocket for catching all sorts of debris and detritus.

There are several ways to clean out the port but here are the best ways to do it carefully and ensure your iPad can keep charging.

Just shoving utensils into your iPad charging port (or any form of metal, in particular) is a pretty good way to damage the sensitive components of it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPad (From $329.99 at Best Buy)

CRC Compressed Air Duster (For $12.74 at Amazon)

How to properly clean an iPad charging port

Start using compressed air

1. Purchase an air duster. Don't try to blow the dust out by blowing on it. Warm, damp breath can damage the components.

air duster

2. Point the air nozzle at the charging port. Do not put it into the port since the air can come out with force enough to hurt the sensitive prongs, and you could also hit a component with the straw.

3. Spray several short bursts. Don't hold down the nozzle for extended periods.

ipad charging port

4. Try plugging your iPad in. If it still doesn't charge, you can move onto step two.

Try using a toothpick

Sometimes dirt and dust can get caked on and require a little more to remove it from the port, requiring an implement. A wooden toothpick has less of a chance of damaging components than a plastic or metal one though you do have to worry about the tip of the toothpick breaking off in the port.

1. Look inside the port for any caked-on dust or dirt. If you can't see inside, try shining a flashlight into it.

2. Delicately insert the toothpick into the port. Try to remove large pieces of lint or dust — don't just blindly grind it too hard against the sides.

3. If the compressed air and the toothpick don't work, you may want to take your device to an Apple store where they have special tools specifically for cleaning the Lightning port, and would be able to properly diagnose if perhaps there's a deeper, underlying issue.

The Laundress makes safe, eco-friendly laundry products for all types of fabrics — including ones that purport to be 'dry clean only'

the laundress detergent 1

  • Most of your "Dry Clean Only" clothes can actually be washed at home. You just need the right products.
  • The Laundress is the 15-year-old company recently acquired by Unilever that's making these safe, highly effective detergents and fabric care products.
  • Each highly concentrated bottle is filled with toxin-free and plant-based ingredients that deliver more value per wash than traditional detergents.
  • You can wash your everyday fabrics, delicates, and even wool and cashmere without a worry. We're also big fans of its stain-removing bar soap

No matter what material your clothes are made of or how carefully you wash them, maintaining them to look and feel brand new seems like a challenge no one is ever able to surmount.

We've come to accept that the stains of life — sweat, everyday dirt and grime, wine, baby burps, and more — are inevitable, but removing the evidence is a task less easy to swallow as we get our daily arm workouts scrubbing vigorously in the sink, encounter washing machine mishaps, and schlepping armfuls of clothing to the dry cleaners.

A few years ago, we discovered the power of a $6, 2-ounce magic-in-a-bar stain remover from a company called The Laundress and it gave us hope that the nice clothing we've spent hundreds of dollars on will really last a lifetime.

Founded in 2004, The Laundress makes highly effective, eco-friendly detergent and fabric care products for the clothing you thought you could only let the dry cleaners handle. It was recently acquired by Unilever, which will only help accelerate its mission of "taking the chore out of doing laundry."

the laundress detergent

We're not surprised The Laundress caught the eye of the consumer goods giant because its products work beautifully at cleaning while doing better things for both your body and the environment. From food to beauty, shoppers are more concerned than ever about how their purchases will impact them and the world around them, but they still want the products to work well.

The founders of The Laundress, Lindsey Boyd and Gwen Whiting, first met at Cornell University's Fiber Science, Textile and Apparel Management and Design program. Both went on to careers in luxury fashion, Boyd as a US sales manager at Chanel Ready-to-Wear, and Whiting as a senior designer at Ralph Lauren.

Their specialized knowledge of all things fabric and garments, plus their frustration with toxic cleaning products and ineffective natural ones, put them in the perfect position to bring change to the laundry market.

the laundress detergent 3

Knowing that 90% of "Dry Clean Only" items are actually washable, they developed powerful cleaning formulas that can take care of fabrics like cashmere and wool, as well as everyday cotton, linen, and blends without ruining them. The formulas don't resort to harsh and harmful ingredients to be effective. They're free of ammonia, chlorine bleach, dyes and colorants, perchloroethylene (a chemical solvent often used by professional dry cleaners), parabens, phthalates, and VOCs.

Instead, you'll find ingredients like oxygenated bleach, which is gentler, safer, and just as effective as chlorine bleach; enzymes like cellulase, lipase, and mannanase, which quickly break down soil and stains; plant-based grease-cutting agents; biodegradable surfectants made from coconut and sugar to help dissolve dirt and stains; and natural essential oils to lend a light, fresh scent to your clothing.

the laundress detergent 2

Some Laundress products we recommend are the Delicate Wash, Signature Detergent, and Sport Detergent. These 16-ounce bottles are highly concentrated and should last 32 washes, giving you more value and less waste per wash. Fabrics that you thought you couldn't confidently wash yourself, like silk or performance fabrics, will stay preserved with each wash.

My experience using the detergents:

Long hesitant to buy more wool and cashmere clothing simply due to their tricky care process, I was most excited to try the Wool & Cashmere Shampoo on my favorite soft sweaters and coats. I lightly hand-washed the wool and cashmere items with the shampoo, let them soak, and dried them on a rack. They kept their shape and came out softer than I ever remembered, plus they had a light cedar scent (which also happens to keep moths away).

The convenient thing is that you can use the products for hand-washing or any laundry machine at any water temperature, so you don't have to juggle a handful of different care instructions for every load of laundry. Putting aside time to do laundry is enough of a nuisance, but The Laundress makes the chore seamless, and our clothes look like they got the professional dry cleaner treatment without the high cost or harmful chemicals.

The aforementioned Wash & Stain Bar that multiple Insider Picks members swear by is another secret to vanquishing the realities of coffee spills and makeup stains. This vegetable soap is excellent for spot treating and pre-wash prep. Since it's small, you can carry it wherever you go in case a stain disaster ever strikes.

The bottom line:

The Laundress has also succeeded in making laundry and cleaning glamorous and sophisticated — something the category has never been described as. With its minimalist designs and Le Labo partnership that have landed it in the shelves of luxury department stores, it's making shoppers excited to do their laundry.

Shop The Laundress cleaning products at Amazon, Target, Nordstrom, or Shopbop.

Inside the 'monstrosity,' a gritty, mostly-abandoned bus station in Tel Aviv that’s become an oasis for artists and urban explorers

In a neighborhood on the west coast of Israel ...

... just about two miles from Jerusalem Beach ...

... lies the Tel Aviv New Central Bus Station. It opened in 1993 on the outskirts of Nave Sha'anan, and it's the second-largest bus station in the world.

Source: Atlas Obscura, The Guardian

Since then, the station has fallen into disrepair, and many parts of it are abandoned. But this has allowed the station to take on a new life as a cultural hub.

People with various ethnic and religious backgrounds live and work around the station, and they attend community events within the station. The sense of community in the station is "like no other in Israel," according to the Guardian.

Source: The Guardian

"It is a place where many peoples and cultures intersect — it's certainly one of the most diverse spots in the country," Naomi Zeveloff, a reporter based in Tel Aviv, told Business Insider. "The building is run down, no question, but peel back the layers and there's so much to discover."

One of the cultural centers is Yung Yidish — a non-profit organization that aims to preserve Yiddish culture. The center is open Tuesday through Wednesday each week, according to Time Out.

The bus station also serves as a host for different events, like the annual beauty contest for migrant workers from the Philippines residing in Israel.

Stav Pinto is a circus artist who practices her acrobatics in the station. Pinto uses her circus talents to teach life skills to children with disabilities and meets with an informal circus group on Monday evenings.

"There's a magical air to the Central Bus Station that reminds me of a dark urban forest," Pinto told Reuters.

Another artist, Tamar Lehman, uses space at the station to practice dancing and playing the accordion. "I felt this building is just like the people I work with — they may appear totally confused within themselves, not understood, bizarre, but the more you learn about the people and their inner structure you slowly become more familiar with their inner world, with all its craziness, and you see the beauty," Lehman told Reuters.

But Tel Aviv's bus station isn't just for practice, it's also the stage for "Seven" — a performance by actors from the Mystorin Theatre Ensemble — which uses all seven floors of the station as a stage.

The show was created specifically for the station, according to Broadway World.

Actor and manager of the play, Dana Forer, called the station a "playground for imagination."

The station is not only used by performing artists, though. Visual artists come to the station for inspiration and a space to work, too.

The station fosters several communities outside of the arts. There is a Filipino church in the building where worshipers like Merry Christ Palacios, seen here, come to pray. Palacios says she also gets her shopping done inside the building.

Source: Reuters

"It's special because I can find everything we need to buy," she said of the station, which is home to a Filipino food market called Makati Cabalen. The market is open seven days a week, according to Time Out.

Source: ReutersTime Out

In fact, the entire fourth floor of the station turns into a Filipino food market on Saturdays when public transport is shut down in observation of the Jewish Sabbath.

Even outside of the church, people find peaceful places to worship in this spacious station, like in front of this graffiti.

But that's not the only place you'll find visual art in the station. This is a room that functions as a gallery for street art. The gallery holds several exhibitions each year, according to Reuters.

The station offers guided tours called Talking Art. "We discovered a world that we didn't know existed," a Trip Advisor reviewer said of the tour.

While it remains filled with art, the station functions a little differently during times of war. Aside from being a transit hub for soldiers, the station is a gathering point, bomb shelter, and command center when it needs to be, like for Operation Pillar of Defense in 2012.

Source: The Guardian, Haaretz

"In times of conflict it kind of transforms instantly into its military function ... But [the sense of military] is always in the background, like it is with everything else," artist and activist Yonathan Mishal told The Guardian.

According to the Jerusalem Post, a bat colony took over an abandoned terminal at the station. The terminal was closed off during construction in the '80s before the station was even opened, and the bats were drawn to it because it resembles a cave — the fruit bat's natural habitat.

Source: The Guardian, The Jerusalem Post

The bats were drawn to Tel Aviv because of the city's abundance of fruit trees — they stayed because food is easier to find in a city, which saved them time and energy. The bats are harmless, according to The Jerusalem Post.

Source: The Jerusalem Post

Refugees and people without homes have also found a safe space in and around the station's deserted parts.

Source: The Guardian

The station's empty areas and failed businesses have a lot to do with the way the station came to be.

Source: The Guardian

Construction on the station began in 1967 but kept getting delayed until its opening nearly 26 years later. Designed by Ram Karmi — who also designed Israel's supreme court building and a terminal at Ben Gurion Airport — the station was intentionally built to be confusing. Karmi reportedly hoped lost commuters would spend more money at the station’s stores.

Source: The Guardian

The finished product is far from the initially-planned design. The station was originally supposed to have two floors — one for transit gates and one for commerce, according to Atlas Obscura. The idea for a third floor sprung up because two leading bus companies each wanted their own floor of gates.

Source: Atlas Obscura

Construction paused when funding for the station ran out in the 1970s. Desperate for new investors, the building plan had to expand to include more retail space.

Source: Atlas Obscura

This cycle of adding more retail space to get funding continued until 1993, when the station was complete with six floors, more than 1000 shops, and a movie theater.

Source: Atlas Obscura

Although the bus station was supposed to be located in the center of Tel Aviv's business district, by 1993, the business center of Tel Aviv had shifted north due to the neglect of the southern neighborhood.

Source: The Guardian

This caused a lot of businesses in the building to close shortly after the station opened.

Source: Atlas Obscura

The lower levels of the station became heavily polluted, so a seventh floor was added in 1998 — terminals on the first and second floors of the station were transferred to the seventh floor. The seventh floor blocks natural light from getting to the lower floors, so more businesses on the first two floors closed.

Source: Atlas Obscura, Triposo

The neighborhood — aptly named for its central street Nave Sha'anan — stretches from the old bus station to the new one, according to Haaretz. Haaretz reported that most of the people in the neighborhood are African asylum seekers and Southeast Asian migrant workers.

Source: HaaretzJewish Telegraphic Agency

Nave Sha'anan tour guide, David Cohen, told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that the neighborhood has had a "disadvantaged population" for a long time. "By the '60s this was one of the most severe neighborhoods in Tel Aviv," he said.

Source: Jewish Telegraphic Agency

Although the station has acquired a bad reputation, not everyone agrees with it, including Zeveloff, who commutes through the station regularly. "The bus station is so much more colorful, dynamic, and fascinating than its reputation among many Israelis would have it," she told Business Insider.

City officials have talked about tearing down the bus station for years, according to The Guardian. They reportedly wanted to build smaller bus hubs around the city instead.

Source: The Guardian

However, there is so much cement in the structure that tearing it down would prove unsafe and uneconomical at this point.

Source: The Guardian

According to the Jerusalem Post, tearing down the building would have to include getting permission from some 800 store owners, as well as from the environmental authorities.

Source: The Jerusalem Post

Aside from this, local architects warned the Times of Israel that tearing down the concrete of the building would be virtually impossible, and it would leave a thick coating of dust that could choke all of Tel Aviv for weeks. Tour guides say the building will remain in Tel Aviv for at least another ten years.

  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week released new information on its investigation into illnesses and deaths tied to vaping.
  • The CDC said that of about 500 people who experienced an illness linked to vaping, about 77% reported having used products containing THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis.
  • "The latest findings from the investigation into lung injuries associated with e-cigarette use, or vaping, suggest products containing THC play a role in the outbreak," the CDC said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is zeroing in on the role of vapes containing THC as it investigates a spate of illnesses and deaths linked to vaping.

Across the US, at least 805 people have become ill and at least 12 have died from a mysterious lung illness, the CDC said this week. The agency said that it still didn't know for sure what's causing the outbreak and that it wasn't focused solely on products containing THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis.

It said that of about 500 people who experienced an illness linked to vaping, about 77% reported having used vapes containing THC, and about 16% said they had used only e-cigarettes containing nicotine.

"The latest findings from the investigation into lung injuries associated with e-cigarette use, or vaping, suggest products containing THC play a role in the outbreak," the CDC said.

The agency reiterated its warning that people should stop buying vaping and e-cig products with THC and nicotine, as it could not rule out nicotine-containing devices as a cause of these illnesses.

Read more:Officials have confirmed 12 deaths and 805 cases of serious lung disease tied to vaping. Here are all the health risks you should know about.

The CDC said it was still not clear whether any single product, substance, or brand was linked to the outbreak of illnesses. There's enormous variety when it comes to vaping devices, ingredients, and brands, making it difficult for investigators to pinpoint a cause.

"We do not know yet what exactly is making people sick," Dr. Anne Schuchat, the principal deputy director of the CDC, said on a conference call on Friday.

She said the agency hadn't determined "whether particular solvents or adulterants are leading to lung injury, or whether cases stem from a single supplier or multiple ones."

Because cannabis is illegal in much of the US, vapes containing THC are largely unregulated. The CDC said most of the THC-containing products that had been tied to the illnesses were obtained from "informal sources," such as people's friends or from a dealer.

The US Food and Drug Administration has been testing samples of cannabis vaping products linked to the illnesses. Some reports have suggested that vitamin E acetate found in some of the products may play a role.

A recent study of 18 THC-containing vape cartridges commissioned by NBC News found that 13 out of the 15 cartridges obtained from the illicit market contained vitamin E and that 10 contained myclobutanil, a fungicide that can turn into hydrogen cyanide when heated.

Because vaping is a relatively new practice, there's still a lot we don't know about its health effects, particularly over the long term, Business Insider's Erin Brodwin reported. Recently discovered health risks range from a heightened exposure to toxic metals to a potentially higher risk of a heart attack.

zagg keyboard ipad

Zagg's line of Bluetooth keyboards is a great innovation for tablet productivity.

From the go-anywhere Rugged model to the inexpensive Messenger model, Zagg keyboards help you type quickly and easily on your iPad

Given Zagg's history as a manufacturer of protective cases for handheld devices, the keyboards will likely be well-built and sturdy.

Older Zagg models would plug in directly, but the Bluetooth connection on the newer versions makes using them easier than ever. First, however, you have to know how to connect the keyboard to your iPad

Here's how to do it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPad (From $329.99 at Best Buy)

Zagg Rugged Model (For $129.99 at Best Buy)

Zagg Messenger Folio Case (For $39.54 at Walmart)

How to connect a Zagg Keyboard to your iPad

1. Insert your iPad into the slot on your Zagg keyboard designed to hold your device. Make sure it clicks securely into place.

2. Turn on your Zagg keyboard by pushing the "On/Off" button on its side. A red light on the keyboard should light up to signal it's on. If it doesn't, you should check to make sure it's been charged.

The next steps require that you enable the Bluetooth on your iPad.

3. Tap Settings on your iPad.

4. Scroll down to and tap Bluetooth.

5. Tap the Bluetooth toggle on your iPad so it turns on (green). It can now pair with your keyboard. To make sure it's available to connect with your keyboard using Bluetooth, you should see that it's searching for "Other Devices."

6. Push the Pairing key on your Zagg keyboard, right next to the On/Off button.

7. A blue light on the side will flash until it is ready for pairing.

8. The Zagg keyboard should now show in your Bluetooth listing under "Other Devices."

9. Tap on the Zaggkeys device (in this case it is a Zaggkeys Folio). Your keyboard will now be connected, though you should test it to make sure the pairing was successful.

Your Zagg keyboard should now be paired permanently with your iPad. If your iPad ever cannot connect with the keyboard, however, simply repeat these instructions.

NOW WATCH: Jeff Bezos is worth over $160 billion — here's how the world's richest man makes and spends his money

Income inequality in the US has hit a record high. Meet the 15 richest American family 'dynasties,' who have a combined net worth of $618 billion.

Income inequality in America is getting worse. In 2018, it reached the highest level it's ever been since the US Census began tracking it 50 years ago, reported Taylor Telford for The Washington Post, citing the US Census 2018 American Community Survey released this week.

Dynastic wealth, which has been bemoaned by Warren Buffett, may be one of the reasons why.

In October 2018, the left-leaning Institute for Policy Studies' "Billionaire Bonanza" report examined the growing concentration of wealth in the US by looking at 15 dynastically wealthy families from the latest Forbes 400 list (also published in October 2018) and data from the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finance (which is from 2016 and has been adjusted for inflation to 2018 dollars).

"Each of these family's wealth comes from companies started by an earlier generation, either a parent or more distant ancestor," the report said. "Each of them also represents a wealth dynasty passing generation to generation free from interruption."

Read more: Meet the Mars family, heirs to the Snickers and M&M's candy empire, who spent years avoiding the limelight and are America's third-wealthiest family 'dynasty'

It found that the median American family owns just more than $80,000 in household wealth, while the 15 family dynasties own a combined $618 billion.

Since 1982, the combined wealth of the top three families — the Waltons, the Kochs, and the Marses — has increased by 5,868%, totaling $348.7 billion.

Here's a closer look at how they and the rest of the wealthy dynastic families from the Forbes 400 built their wealth, ranked from lowest net worth to highest net worth. The estimated total wealth for each family is a sum of each individual family member's wealth listed on the Forbes 400 and does not include the wealth of any family members not on the Forbes 400.

Note that the Forbes 400 doesn't encompass all of America's wealthy dynastic families — some individual family members have less than the $2.1 billion in personal wealth needed to make the list.

'What comes with a Nintendo Switch?': A guide to what's included with a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch Lite

0
0

nintendo switch lite

  • A regular Nintendo Switch comes with everything you need to enjoy gaming at home on a TV, and on-the-go using the Switch as a handheld console.
  • The original Switch comes with two small controllers, called Joy-Cons. These can detach from the Switch, and also combine together into one regular-sized controller using the grip that comes with the console.
  • There's also a version of the console called the Nintendo Switch Lite, which can only be played in handheld mode, not on a TV. The Joy-Cons on the Switch Lite cannot be removed.
  • In order to enjoy local multiplayer games — in other words, games played with someone in the same room — you'll need to purchase additional controllers, which are available in a variety of styles.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The Nintendo Switch comes with everything you need to start enjoying your favorite Nintendo games, except for the games themselves. But seeing as you can buy Switch games at any game store, or download them in minutes from the Nintendo eShop, that's not a big issue.

However, there are now two versions of the Nintendo Switch: the original, and the Nintendo Switch Lite. The biggest difference between the two is that the original Switch can be played on your TV or in handheld mode, while the Lite can only be in handheld mode.

Both versions come in a variety of different colors, and there are also limited edition versions themed around specific games, like "Let's Go! Pikachu" and "Super Mario Odyssey." The limited edition consoles usually come with their game bundled in.

Each Switch system also comes with 32 GB of storage to start, which you can expand with microSD cards. Local multiplayer can be done for free, but you'll need to pay a monthly fee to play online.

Each version comes with its own equipment in the box, so here's an explainer for both.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Nintendo Switch (From $299.99 at Best Buy)

Nintendo Switch Lite (From $199.99 at Best Buy)

What the original Nintendo Switch comes with

The basic Nintendo Switch bundle comes with the console itself, which just consists of a giant screen. By attaching the small Joy-Con controllers to either side, you can play the Switch as a handheld console.

nintendo switch

The package also comes with the Switch dock — when you hook this dock up to a TV and place your Switch into it, you can play your switch on that TV. The dock also charges the Switch while it's connected to power.

The Switch technically comes with two Joy-Con controllers, a left and right controller, but they can only be used separately for a few games; most of the time, you'll use these controllers together, either connected to the console itself during handheld gaming, or connected to the included Joy-Con grip when your TV is the screen. They can also be used without the grip to take advantage of their motion control capabilities.

nintendo switch joy cons

The package also includes the two cords necessary for using the Switch, which are an HDMI cable to connect it to a TV, and an AC to USB-C charging cable for power. There are also two wrist straps that can be affixed to the Joy-Con controllers, which makes them slightly bigger, and also makes pressing the shoulder buttons easier.

What the Nintendo Switch Lite comes with

The Nintendo Switch Lite only comes with what you need to start playing.

Nintendo Switch Lite

Obviously, it comes with the Switch Lite itself, which is just a screen with two Joy-Con controllers hardwired in. You can't remove the Joy-Cons, but you can still connect other controllers to the system for local multiplayer games.

It also comes with the charging cable, an AC to USB-C cord.

Health-Ade makes the best-tasting kombucha we've tried so far

0
0

Health Ade

  • Kombucha is a rapidly growing industry, with US sales nearing $700 million in 2018. Health-Ade is one of brands leading the growth of this functional fermented tea.
  • It launched in 2012 as a local favorite at Los Angeles farmers markets. Today, it's one of the fastest growing functional beverage brands in the US and brews 120,000 bottles of kombucha a day.
  • It's also our favorite kombucha brand because it comes in many delicious flavors, which are made only with cold-pressed juice from organic produce bought from local farms, and isn't as sour or vinegar-like as other brands.

Kombucha — the mere mention of this fermented beverage is enough to cause faces to contort into grimaces, or conversely, eyes to light up with excitement.

Lately, it seems like the latter is more true. Total US cross-channel sales reached approximately $689 million in 2018, with sales in convenience stores growing 71% to around $23.3 million.

If you've checked out the refrigerated beverage aisle at your supermarket or corner bodega lately, you've probably seen — and been overwhelmed by — the rows and rows of colorful bottles of kombucha. The three biggest players fighting for control of the US kombucha market are GT's Living Foods, KeVita and Health-Ade.

Of those three, Health-Ade is my favorite.

health ade kombucha 3

About Health-Ade

Health-Ade Kombucha is cofounded by Daina Trout, who began brewing kombucha at home while pursuing her Masters' degrees in Nutrition and Public Health at Tufts University. In 2012, she, her husband, and her best friend started selling bottles of the apartment-brewed drink at local farmers markets in Los Angeles.

These homegrown beginnings are still present in how the company, which was the fastest growing functional beverage brand in 2018, operates today. The kombucha is brewed in small batches in 2.5 gallon glass jars, though Health-Ade now ferments at a much higher rate of 60,000 jars a week.

A functional beverage is any drink containing added ingredients that claims to provide specific health benefits. In the case of kombucha, these benefits may include improved digestion due to the increased presence of healthy bacteria and blood sugar control due to the antioxidant qualities of the green tea. That being said, there hasn't been a lot of substantial studies about the benefits of kombucha.

The plain, original flavor contains just four ingredients — black or green tea, sugar, a starter of aged kombucha, and scoby, which is the culture of bacteria, yeast, and enzymes that turns the sweet tea into tart and bubbly kombucha tea.

Health-Ade's many delicious flavors include Pink Lady Apple, Pomegranate, Blood Orange-Carrot-Ginger, and a newly released Cherry Berry. They're made only with cold-pressed juice from organic produce bought from local farms, and among its many certifications, Health-Ade is USDA-certified organic and Non-GMO Project-verified.

health ade kombucha

Take a sip of Health-Ade

I always like trying out new drinks, whether it's lemonade or a cold-pressed juice. Kombucha is one that's really piqued my interest in the last couple of years because of its divisive taste.

I've tried various kombucha brands both national and local, but the only one I've unequivocally enjoyed was Health-Ade.

It doesn't have as strong of a sour, vinegar-like taste as other brands, and it's bubbly and refreshing. Each 16 ounce bottle contains less than 100 calories, and different amounts of sugar and carbs depending on the flavor.

The cold-pressed brews are enticing, and the kombucha is said to help aid digestion thanks to the naturally occurring probiotics and organic acids that result of the fermenting process. There's also a Superfood line made with "functional and botanical superfoods" such as maca root which purportedly helps increase energy, spirulina for antioxidants, and wheatgrass which is believed to be super nutrient-dense, giving your body even more benefits than kombucha alone. But like kombucha itself, there hasn't been a ton of substantiated studies that back up these superfood claims.

Other members of the Insider Picks team love Health-Ade despite the gray science claims. One editor didn't seem interested when he noticed I was opening a box of kombucha samples, but practically ran over once I specified that they were from Health-Ade.

I would call myself an entry-level kombucha drinker — as in, I'm happy having a bottle once every couple of weeks — so I thought the 16-ounce bottles were a bit large for me and I usually couldn't finish the entire bottle in one sitting.

If you drink at my pace, know that the fizziness will be weaker the next day, but the drink will still taste great.

health ade kombucha 2

Health-Ade's impact

By being USDA-certified organic, the company is helping support healthy ecosystems, and it also provides better conditions for farmers.

Health-Ade composts all of its organic matter, including tea bags, juice pulp, and scoby. Since starting its composting program in May 2017, it has diverted more than 2.5 million pounds of waste from landfills. In 2018 alone, it composted more than 1 million pounds of organic waste. It has also upcycled more than 1,000 bottles into soap dispensers and small herb gardens.

If you're looking for a new kombucha brand to try, Health-Ade is our favorite and the one we recommend the most. The taste is not too sour, all the flavors are delicious, and it's a nice afternoon pick-me-up. It also only uses local and organic ingredients, and gives back to the community by composting and upcycling.

Roku

After disappearing for nearly all of 2018, a new and improved version of the Spotify app has returned to most Roku devices, which means you should be able to add the Spotify channel and stream music through your television.

Spotify is a streaming music service with a catalog of more than 30 million songs, available for listening in a web browser, mobile app, or on a streaming device like Roku. Unlike most streaming music services, you can use Spotify for free (with advertisements), though an ad-free subscription is also available.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Which Roku devices support Spotify

Spotify is available on all Roku TVs and all streaming devices from model 3600 (the Roku Streaming Stick, released in 2016) and later.

To use the Spotify app, you need to be running Roku OS 8.2 or later. To check which version of the Roku OS you are running and install updates, check out the article, "How to update your Roku device manually in 5 simple steps."

How to use the Spotify app on Roku

If your Roku device supports the Spotify app, you may need to install it from Roku's expansive library of streaming channels. For information on how to do that, read the article, "How to add channels to your Roku device in three ways."

After installing the Spotify channel, you need to log in or create a new free account. If you already have a Spotify account, the easiest way to get started is to choose to log in with a PIN. Go to spotify.com/pair on a computer in which you're already logged into Spotify, and enter the code displayed on the Roku screen.

NOW WATCH: Jeff Bezos is worth over $160 billion — here's how the world's richest man makes and spends his money

We tried Everlane’s recycled cashmere sweaters — they’re more sustainably produced and just as comfortable as the originals

0
0

Everlane ReCashmere

  • Everlane has always centered itself around ethical business practices, transparency with consumers, and sustainability. Its new ReCashmere collection is the latest example of that.
  • Each piece in the Everlane ReCashmere Collection is made with 60% recycled cashmere and 40% extra-fine merino wool sourced from ethical ranchers.
  • Not only are ReCashmere sweaters more sustainably made, but they're also more affordable than Everlane's traditional cashmere counterparts — and just as soft, too.
  • Read our full thoughts on the collection, below.

Between its ethical and transparent approach to manufacturing and it's simplistic design aesthetics, Everlane has become a beloved brand for quality wardrobe essentials.

While the Insider Picks team had great experiences with handfuls of Everlane products including popular styles like the Day Glove flats, the recycled plastic ReNew Collection, and Tread sneakers, its Cashmere sweaters are a true team favorite.

Now, the brand is leaning further into its mission of sustainability with a collection of recycled cashmere sweaters for men and women. The ReCashmere collection includes classic sweater styles like crewnecks, V-necks, mocknecks, and cardigans.

Everlane

How ReCashmere sweaters are made

By partnering with an environmentally-conscious mill in Prato, Italy, Everlane ReCashmere is made by collecting well-worn cashmere through recycling programs. The recycled materials are then sorted by color, combed, and spun with responsible extra-fine merino wool from non-mulesed sheep.

The end result is a 60/40-blend of recycled cashmere and merino wool, which is naturally sustainable. It's just as soft as Everlane's 100% Grade-A cashmere, but with half the carbon footprint.

Why you should consider them

While sustainability and a reduced carbon footprint might be the biggest takeaways for environmentally conscious shoppers, the price should be appealing to everyone. In comparison to Everlane's Heavyweight Cashmere starting at $140 and Grade-A Cashmere starting at $130, every piece in the ReCashmere collection is under $100 — with the exception of the women's Varsity Cardigan, which, at $120, is still cheaper than traditional cashmere cardigans.

In my experience testing products made with recycled or upcycled materials — including sneakers, jeans, jackets, fleeces, and T-shirts — they've always been marginally more expensive than standard pieces. Everlane somehow managed to make the quintessential fall and winter wardrobe staple better for the environment and your wallet.

We decided to put them to the test to see if they're really worth buying over 100% cashmere pieces. You can read our thoughts below, but the short answer is that yes, they're just as great.

Everlane ReCashmere Crew

The ReCashmere Crew in Heathered Lemon Lime, $98

My first experience with Everlane's cashmere came in the form of the Heavyweight Cashmere Hoodie and I loved it. As the brand's most premium version of cashmere, I wasn't surprised that it turned out to be so good, but the ReCashmere collection was truly impressive being that it's recycled and more affordable.

Since Everlane claimed that the ReCashmere is just as soft as it traditional pieces, I compared my pieces side-by-side, and it was absolutely true. The Heavyweight Cashmere was obviously heavier, but it feels identical to touch in terms of softness.

Typically, I wait until it's cold enough to wear a long-sleeve layer under any of my cashmere or wool sweaters, but I decided to wear the ReCashmere Crew with only a tank top underneath. It was very slightly itchy as is any cashmere, but it was completely bearable to wear all day. For context, I've tried this in the past with other cashmere/wool pieces and ended up taking them off or putting a long-sleeve shirt underneath before leaving home.

Our director of content strategy, Ellen Hoffman, picked out this heathered lemon lime color because she thought it was missing from my wardrobe, and she was right. It's a unique shade that's perfect for guys who already have typical sweater colors like black, blue, grey, and tan.  — Amir Ismael, Insider Picks reporter

Everlane ReCashmere Vintage Crew in Heathered Aqua

The ReCashmere Vintage Crew in Heathered Aqua, $95

I love Everlane's cashmere sweaters so much that I have four of them. Now I have a fifth one, and it's the new recycled cashmere and merino wool crew-neck sweater from the ReCashmere collection. Even though it's a mix of fibers, it's just as soft as the 100% cashmere sweaters I have from Everlane. It fits well and isn't too long for my short torso. I really like the thick ribbing around the collar, the cuffs, and the bottom of the sweater because it adds texture and visual interest to the piece.

The heathered aqua color is really beautiful in person and goes perfectly with my blue eyes (if I do say so myself). — Malarie Gokey, Insider Picks senior editor

Everlane ReCashmere Button Mockneck

The Everlane ReCashmere Button Mockneck in Heather Grey, $98

I'm been reviewing Everlane's cashmere for the last four years, and every year it gets a little bit better; 2019 is no different. The new ReCashmere collection of sweaters is just as soft and cozy and last year's, and it comes in a bunch of great silhouettes, but now it's also more sustainable since it's made with recycled yarn. I'd never know by looking or touching alone that the materials the Button Mockneck is made of have been recycled.

If the ReCashmere collections holds up as well as Everlane's previous cashmere sweaters I've worn, you can expect minimal pilling throughout the cold-weather season (I use this sweater stone to safely remove pills) and never any itching. — Ellen Hoffman, Insider Picks director of content strategy

How to connect a PC to your TV wirelessly in 3 different ways, to watch movies, browse the internet, or stream games

google chromecast

If you're trying to connect your computer to your television wirelessly, then knowing what you want to connect it for will give you the best idea of what hardware to buy.

Many smart TVs can connect to PCs without trouble, so if you have one, look at the manual or the manufacturer's website for instructions.

Otherwise, you'll need an additional device. Which device you need depends on what you want to do with it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

IOGEAR Wireless 3D Digital Kit (For $179.99 at Amazon)

Google Chromecast (From $35 at Best Buy)

Steam Link (For $71.67 at Amazon)

NVIDIA Shield (For $188.48 at Amazon)

How to connect a PC to your TV wirelessly

Wireless HDMI kits

For general purpose wireless streaming — just using your TV as a second PC monitor, or mirroring your screen — you can purchase wireless HDMI boxes, such as the IOGEAR Wireless 3D Digital Kit

This should allow you to connect your television to any other device that accepts an HDMI cable, with many devices offering 100 feet (30 meters) range. In other words, if your TV and PC both have an HDMI port, you can broadcast between the two without issue. If you've bought a TV or PC since about 2010, this shouldn't be an issue.

What you'll do is plug one of the boxes into your TV, and the other into your PC. Once you turn them on and set your TV to the right HDMI channel, your PC should treat the TV as a new monitor.

This might be an expensive option, but wireless HDMI boxes offer you a lot of flexibility.

Chromecasts

If you're trying to connect to the television for internet browsing purposes, then your next best bet will probably be a Chromecast. The Google Chromecast lets you broadcast content heaps of content to your TV from a PC, Mac, or mobile device.

For information on how to set up and use a Chromecast, check out our article, "'What is Google Chromecast?': How to use Google's smart device for TVs and monitors."

Game streaming devices

If you're trying to wirelessly connect for PC gaming purposes, you should look into devices like the Steam Link. The Link allows you to stream video games from your PC to a TV wirelessly over Wi-Fi, or with an ethernet cable.

All you need to do is plug the Link into your TV, and connect it to the same internet network as your PC. Once you've done that, you can stream nearly any Steam game to your PC.

The NVIDIA Shield can do the same thing, and lets you play any PC game, even if they're not on Steam. But it comes with a hefty price tag — nearly $200 for the gaming edition.

Moms are furious that Instagram's algorithm keeps deleting topless photos of their long-haired sons (FB)

Long haired boys insta

Moms on Instagram have started posting pictures of their sons in protest of Instagram's algorithm after the site kept flagging and deleting topless photos of boys with long hair. The algorithm apparently mistook them for girls, which would make the photos violations of Instagram's community standards.

Lauren Strapagiel at Buzzfeed News reported that @parkersavesthesea, Tori Spooner's account featuring her 4-year-old son, Parker, was deleted by Instagram two weeks ago, but Spooner had had issues with the algorithm for over a year before that. Photos of Parker were being flagged by Facebook, which owns Instagram.

Spooner told Buzzfeed that Facebook gave her a warning, stating that the photos violated the site's community guidelines. The account was then deleted because it had too many flagged photos, according to Buzzfeed.

Other moms on Instagram said they faced similar problems, and many started posting photos of their long-haired sons holding signs reading variations of "Dear Instagram, I'm a boy. I just have long hair. Quit deleting my pictures," BuzzFeed reports.

One store that sells hand drawn clothing on Instagram, @finfirst, jumped on the trend and began selling shirts that say "Long live long haired boys." The account is named after the owners' own long-haired son.

Instagram's rules on this topic are a bit confusing. The site's community guidelines state that nudity is not allowed on the app. Its definition of child nudity includes visible female nipples on anyone above toddler age, but does not ban visible male nipples. The guidelines go on to explain that "for safety reasons, there are times when we may remove images that show nude or partially-nude children," like seemingly benign photos of kids taking a bath.

In a statement to Buzzfeed, the company admitted that it made a mistake deleting Spooner's photos, which did not violate any rules. The account has since been reinstated.

As Buzzfeed reported, Instagram and its parent company Facebook use machine learning and artificial intelligence to "proactively detect child nudity and previously unknown child exploitative content when it's uploaded." The signs the boys held tells Instagram that they are boys, assuming that Instagram's algorithm mistook them for girls because of their long hair.

Most of the #longhairedboysrevolution posts tagged Instagram head Adam Mosseri. On September 26, Mosseri posted an Instagram story using the hashtag, saying that he restored the wrongfully removed accounts, and included a link for others to appeal their deletions. He signed his note from "Dad of a long-haired boy.""

'Does the iPad have a headphone jack?': Here are the iPad models that have a standard headphone jack

ipad pro

  • The latest iPad Pro models do not have a standard headphone jack, meaning you will have to buy a dongle to connect your wired headphones to the USB-C port.
  • However, the iPad Air, iPad Mini, and classic iPad still have a standard headphone jack.
  • The most recent iPad Pro models also ditch the lightning port, using a USB-C port both for charging and for connecting to other hardware.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

If you have a great pair of wired headphones and you're in the market for a new iPad Pro, make sure to add a dongle to your shopping cart.

Both of the most recent iPad Pro models— the 12.9" and 11" options — have ditched the standard 3.5 mm headphone jack, instead featuring only a USB-C port.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPad Pro 12.9" (From $1,149.99 at Best Buy)

iPad Air (From $499.99 at Best Buy)

iPad Mini (From $399.99 at Best Buy)

iPad (From $329.99 at Best Buy)

The latest iPad Pro models do not have a standard headphone jack, but these iPad models do

While the new iPad Air, iPad Mini, and basic iPad still have a headphone jack and a lightning port, it's likely these will be some of the last iPads that features these ports, standard on the Apple tablet for many years.

If you have a new iPad Pro without a headphone jack, the best move is using a set of headphones that can wirelessly pair with the tablet via Bluetooth.

You can check out our recommendations for the best wireless Bluetooth headphones, or the best wireless Bluetooth earbuds.

Or you can save money and keep using your wired headphones, and buy a USB-C to 3.5 mm audio adapter, which only costs $10.99.

If you don't want to splurge for a nice pair of wireless Bluetooth headphones, using a dongle to keep your older headphones working may be a good idea, as few USB-C headphones currently on the market have good enough reviews to make them worth the investment.

This home paint startup is a millennial haven — it offers a smaller selection of highly curated colors and bundles supplies for easy shopping

  • Backdrop is a new startup that wants to make it less of a chore to paint your home.
  • It sells paint ($59) in a small selection of colors, samples ($2) that ship for free, and supplies, plus it has an online calculator that helps you determine how much of everything you'll need.
  • The shopping experience and products feel more reminiscent of a design-studio than a hardware store — an exciting change that reframes the chore of wall painting as a creative and transformative endeavor.

When I was a kid, I loved walking through the paint section at the hardware store, hoarding and ruffling through thick bundles of paint chips. It's just like picking out colors for my paint-by-numbers coloring book!

If only that same enthusiasm still applied today, when choosing the right color will determine the feel and style of your home (no pressure) and the labor of painting entire walls is a tad more intensive and expletive-ridden than plopping down in front of a coloring book.

Husband-and-wife duo Caleb and Natalie Ebel are the cofounders of Backdrop, a new direct-to-consumer paint brand that's reimagining the home paint shopping and user experience. Having painted every home and apartment they've ever lived in, they wanted to create the brand they wish they could have used then.

Caleb was formerly at Warby Parker, while Natalie was the CMO of nonprofit Pencils of Promise. Unlike the founder of competing online paint startup Clare, they're not interior designers, but they're able to leverage their personal perspectives as consumers to create more exciting solutions for the paint industry.

Backdrop sells three types of paint: Standard Finish (low-sheen, semi-matte), Semi-Gloss Finish, and Primer. The Standard wall paint is available in a curated collection of 50 colors, which have names like 36 Hours in Marrakesh (warm, earthy pink) and Skywalker (muted, light blue with green undertones).

You won't have to purchase a whole gallon ($59) immediately, though. Backdrop sells 12-inch-by-12-inch square adhesive samples, which cost $2 each. While you typically have to spend $75 on the site in order to get free shipping, these samples are an exception and will ship for free.

backdrop paint 3

Once you've determined which colors you want, you can use the site's Calculator to figure out how much paint and how many supplies you need. In addition to buckets of paint, Backdrop offers brushes, rollers, and other accessories to aid you in your room makeover. The 11-Piece Essentials Kit ($45) bundles them all together at a discounted price.

The paint itself comes in rectangular, easy-pour buckets that don't require a tool to open or close. The paint is low-VOC, which means it has low impact on indoor air quality, and it's also Greenwise-certified, which means it meets high levels of performance and environmental standards. Made with a water-based, acrylic resin formula, it's easy to apply, highly pigmented, durable, and quick-drying.

The artfully designed and easy-to-navigate site is similar to that of many other popular online startups and shows that Backdrop is leaning towards a younger generation of shoppers and homeowners.

If extras on its site like Spotify playlists created around paint colors aren't indication enough, retail partnerships like its recently announced Urban Outfitters collaboration place Backdrop far from the world of traditional paint and hardware stores and more squarely in newly formed camp that believes paint can be fun, influenced by culture, and driven by design.

I dropped out of a Ph.D. program 6 figures in debt, but I’m now a multimillionaire at 33. Here are my 3 tricks for building a hit brand.

women social media

  • Amanda Frances is a self-made multimillionaire, digital course creator, writer, and podcaster.
  • Five years ago, she left a Ph.D. program hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt. Now she's a multimillionaire CEO in Malibu, California.
  • Her company grossed $1 million dollars in the first quarter of 2019 alone. Frances says it's because she knows the power of viewing herself as a brand.
  • She believes in herself, posts authentically online, and lets different aspects of her life merge together.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Realizing the superpowers of social media, over the past 8 years I've created a following of over 500,000 women who I'm able to serve, support and empower through online courses, digital training programs, mentorships, and masterminds — as well as through my podcast and weekly YouTube training video.

In 2019, my company, Amanda Frances Inc., has processed over 18,000 transactions and grossed $1 million dollars in the first quarter alone. My company creates digital courses, coaching programs, and online trainings that helps hundreds of thousands of women take control of their lives, start and grow their own businesses, and create their own wealth. Each year, my company helps to create new six-figure, multiple six-figure, and seven-figure business owners.

Amanda Frances

How did I go from being six-figures in student debt, dropping out of a prestigious Ph.D. program, while working multiple jobs at a time ... to leveraging the power of the internet to become an internationally known thought leader in the realm of financial empowerment for women?

By believing in myself. And by knowing the power of viewing myself as a brand.

Whenever someone asks me how I grew my business so quickly and no matter how many times I'm asked, I always cite a huge part of my success to personal branding.

Now branding is one of those terms that basically begs the question: What exactly is it?

Simply put, your brand is just how people think of you.

Branding is not just about perfect color and font choices for a flashy website or photos of you in front of a private jet or clinking champagne glasses on a yacht. You can have those things if that's authentic to you — but to create a personal brand people know, love, and trust, we have to go deeper.

SEE ALSO: I went from being a nanny and cocktail server to a multimillionaire at 33. Here are my 3 tricks for getting ahead.

Start with a belief in yourself

The foundation of anything you create is believing in yourself first.

Doubts will come up. They'll come up often.

Examine them, shift them and get back into a place of deep faith and belief as quickly as possible.

My branding strategy is this: I know myself, like myself, and believe in myself. I let this be reflected through my work. (That is some magnetic stuff, huh?)

Of course, you will have to take a lot of practical action steps over the years. But your number one focus should always be maintaining deep belief in the power of your work and commitment to getting it into the world.

I encourage you to answer this question each day, "Why is my work needed and powerful?" This is something you can do with a friend or in your journal.

Be the real you

One of the most important parts of creating a powerful online presence and brand is authenticity. People are attracted to truth. They want the real you. You may feel tempted to build your brand to be who you think people want you to be along the way. But a contrived version of yourself is essentially a watered down version of your natural greatness. The world needs the real you.

Social media followers, clients, and customers are savvy! They know when you're just doing it for the 'gram! And while likes and follows are a measure of success for some, I have created an online presence where people feel safe to buy from me. (To the tune of 18,000 transactions this year.)

Showing up online in an authentic and transparent way will build massive trust and loyalty that keeps your fans and followers around for the long haul and purchasing on repeat.

Blur the lines between work and life

People have a lot of silly ideas about what it takes to be successful in our lives and businesses.

One idea is that when must be somehow balanced between work and play, family time and productive time, happy hour, and an hour of cardio.

And it's all noise.

The truth: The more you allow the sections of your life to merge, the stronger your brand will be.

Once I allowed family time, friend time, work time, and play time to all bleed into each other, my life got easier and my brand got stronger.

It doesn't mean that I am required to document everything I do in real life, online. But it means I can document any of it that I want, as I choose.

The thing is: You are your brand. It's all your life. So any and every aspect can be part of your brand. (Whichever parts you want.)

This means I might do a little work from the spa, gym, or social setting when I want to do. I might include friends of family in my social media posts or sales emails. It means watching movies on a plane when some people may write emails. It means I might not work on a Wednesday and work all day on Saturday.

I recommend that you allow your life and business to flow together, so that there is nothing to separate or balance.

Because of my belief in myself, my work, and my ability to monetize my mind and my life, I have created a brand that impacts hundreds of thousands of women through my free and paid offers.

This has allowed me to create a thriving, multimillion-dollar global brand with both the impact and income to show for it.

George and Amal Clooney are celebrating five years of being the perfect example of what a power marriage looks like.

He is an actor, director, producer, coffee connoisseur, and tequila man; she is a human rights lawyer and fashion icon

Their many titles make them two of the most beloved celebrities — and also among the wealthiest.

Clooney was the highest-paid actor of 2018, largely due to the sale of his tequila company, Casamigos. His earnings that year rounded out at $239 million — if you do the math, that means Clooney made $27,283 an hour last year. His wife, on the other hand, is estimated to have a net worth of around $20 million herself.
