'What is LinkedIn?': A beginner's guide to the popular professional networking and career development site

LinkedIn logo

  • LinkedIn is a social network that focuses on professional networking and career development.
  • You can use LinkedIn to display your resume, search for jobs, and enhance your professional reputation by posting updates and interacting with other people.
  • LinkedIn is free, but a subscription version called LinkedIn Premium offers additional features like online classes and seminars, as well as insights into who's searching for and viewing your profile.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and a dozen others, LinkedIn is a social network. And like other social network, it's owned by a big tech company: Microsoft.

But unlike most social networks, LinkedIn is a professional networking site, designed to help people make business connections, share their experiences and resumes, and find jobs.

LinkedIn essentials

Despite the professional focus, LinkedIn is quite similar to social networking sites like Facebook. It's based on principles like connecting to friends (or, in the case of LinkedIn, "connections,"), posting updates, sharing and liking content, and instant messaging other users.

LinkedIn also puts a professional spin on ideas you know from Facebook. Your profile, for example, becomes a resume, complete with work experience, accomplishments, recommendations, and referrals from colleagues.

linkedin 2

The site also offers things you won't find in other places, like a full-featured career board, where you can search for and apply for jobs.

Many employment services are now compatible with LinkedIn — when applying for a position, you may be able to share your LinkedIn profile, which sometimes means you won't need to painstakingly enter your work experience into a long online form.

If you're new to LinkedIn, here's a quick tour around the site.

A quick tour of LinkedIn

  • Home is akin to Facebook's news feed. Here you can see posts made by other LinkedIn users, and make your own posts that others can see, like, share, and comment on. Like Facebook, you can limit your posts to just connections in your network, or share your thoughts with everyone.

linkedin 1

  • My Network is where you can see your existing network of connections, and search for LinkedIn users to invite to join your network. You can also see existing invitations you've received from others.
  • Jobs is a comprehensive career site. You can search for and apply for jobs, get information about companies you're interested in, and much more. You can set up notifications and get emails when there are new job postings.

linkedin 3

  • Messaging leads to an instant messaging platform you can use to chat with people in your network. You can also use it to send messages to people outside your network with something called InMail, if you subscribe to certain tiers of LinkedIn Premium.

Read more:What is LinkedIn Premium? A breakdown of all 4 of LinkedIn's paid membership tiers

  • Me is where you can find your profile, which is akin to your resume. Here, you can show your career history by posting your work experience, accomplishments, education, current location, and more. If you have a LinkedIn account, this should be as polished as your actual resume, as you can expect professional connections and recruiters to look at it.

What you can do with LinkedIn

It should be clear that LinkedIn is a tool you can use to enhance your professional networking and job searching activities.

Many people use the site to grow their contacts and find career opportunities, and the Jobs section of the site is a powerful tool for finding and applying for jobs. There are settings on LinkedIn that let you alert recruiters that you're actively job searching as well.

Some people use LinkedIn to enhance their professional reputation by making posts in the news feed, and commenting on other people's posts.

LinkedIn Premium is a subscription version of LinkedIn that adds a number of additional features, such as online professional development classes,  insights into who's viewing your profile, and the ability to instant message anyone on LinkedIn, even if they're not in your network.

I tried a $60 teeth-whitening kit that was personalized to my level of sensitivity and discoloration — here’s what it’s like

glowup teeth whitening

  • At-home teeth-whitening kits are an affordable and convenient alternative to professional teeth-whitening treatments.
  • The problem is that they can be painful for people with sensitive teeth and aren't specific to any particular type of stains you're concerned with.
  • A new teeth-whitening kit called Glowup ($60) is designed with teeth sensitivity in mind and uses whitening agents that are personalized to your teeth.
  • It's quick and effective: each treatment takes just 16 minutes and can yield up to eight shades of difference in brightness after a week of use.

A smile changes everything. That's probably why we're always looking to improve our smiles, whether through teeth straightening services, oral care subscriptions like electric toothbrushes, and teeth-whitening products.

If you're someone who's looked into at-home teeth-whitening solutions, you'll know that they're cheaper and more convenient than professional treatments, but they can also be painful or ineffective, and depending on the design, still expensive and inconvenient.

A new startup called Glowup is making one of the most affordable and innovative teeth-whitening solutions. Glowup's teeth-whitening kit combines a whitening agent personalized to the user's teeth sensitivity and discoloration level with a 16-minute light treatment to deliver pain-free and noticeable results. It costs $60 and is available only on its website.

glowup teeth whitening 5

Prior to starting Glowup, CEO David Tao tried nearly every type of teeth-whitening product on the market, but most experiences caused unbearable pain for his sensitive teeth. Direct-to-consumer brands like Harry's and Dollar Shave Club inspired him to create a new teeth-whitening concept. He says, "I noticed remarkable similarities between the shaving and teeth-whitening experience: controlled by large players, high mark-ups, terrible in-store buying experience, and paralysis of choice."

Glowup further differentiates itself in the teeth-whitening space with its personalization process. Tao says, "The hypothesis [is] that if a product is personalized, it can be pain-free and effective for everyone."

The Glowup team is currently comprised entirely of current UC Berkeley students and recent graduates. In the short amount of time since its launch (April 2019), it has secured angel funding from the founders of Curology, as well as a seed grant from a student fund at Berkeley's Haas School of Business.

I tried out this new teeth-whitening kit to see if it was really as simple and effective as it seemed.

What it's like to use Glowup to whiten your teeth

First, you need to visit Glowup's website to take a short quiz that will determine the type of whitening agent you receive in your kit. The questionnaire asks about your brushing and flossing habits, your level of teeth sensitivity, and how often you consume stain-causing food and drinks, such as coffee.

The kit you receive in the mail will look like the below. Each kit includes a whitening light in the form of a mouthpiece, two USB adapters, three customized whitening gels, and a user guide.

Read more: SmileDirectClub's $79 LED whitening kit worked exceptionally well — and it didn't cause me any tooth sensitivity

glowup teeth whitening 2

Like SmileDirectClub's teeth-whitening kit, the mouthpiece is powered by your phone, so there's no need to stand attached to a wall. You can use it any time you have your phone on you.

To use the kit, I applied the gel to the top and bottom of the mouthpiece, placed it in my mouth, plugged it into my phone's charger port, and pressed the "on" button. Wearing the light isn't exactly the most natural position to hold your mouth, but overall the experience isn't too uncomfortable and it only lasts 16 minutes. The light automatically turns off once the treatment is completed.

glowup teeth whitening 3

Glowup uses the same enamel-safe whitening agent as dentists, plus natural, anti-inflammatory ingredients like chamomile and aloe leaf to prevent against sensitivity and pain. My teeth are a little sensitive, and I experienced no pain while using Glowup's whitening kit.

The results of my testing process

The three gels should last six to nine treatments (about a week's supply). Glowup suggests using its kit every day until you reach your desired result. I try to avoid some of the worst teeth-staining offenders like coffee and red wine, so my teeth aren't too obviously discolored, but I still have always wished my teeth were whiter.

I'll admit I wasn't good about consistently using the kit at the recommended daily interval, and I was closer to a couple times a week. However, I still saw results and improvements in the color and brightness of my teeth. Depending on the level you start at, Glowup says customers can see up to eight shades of difference in brightness after a week of use.

The bottom line

Overall, Glowup's teeth-whitening kit was easy to use and really works. Though less convenient than teeth-whitening strips, it didn't intrude too much on my weekly personal care routine, and it's more affordable than other light treatment whitening kits. I also loved that it was customized to my specific needs, not just a general catch-all product. If you have sensitive teeth and have been let down by other teeth-whitening kits out there, it's time to try Glowup

The top 20 cities around the world that are ready to welcome Gen Z workers

Amsterdam, netherlands

The oldest members of Generation Z — those born in 1997 — have just graduated from college. For those considering a new place to live and work, a select group of cities could have the most to offer.

The 2019 Generation Z City Index by apartment search site Nestpick found the best cities around the world for Gen Zers to live in. Nestpick used Pew Research Center's January 2019 definition of Generation Z: anyone born between 1997 and 2012. But that's not all that defines them. According to Nestpick, Gen Zers are "digital natives who value security, diversity, and autonomy, and aim to achieve it through pragmatism and determination."

The study examined 110 prominent international cities, focusing on 22 factors that were split into four main categories: digitalization, business, principles, and leisure. The sub-categories across all four major categories included government digitalization, education, environmental action, LGBT+ equality, right to protest, affordability, and concerts, among others. Each city was given a score out of 100, the total of the weighted averages of each of the four categories. You can read a full explanation of the study's methodology here.

The top spot went to London, which earned perfect scores in three sub-categories: concerts, coworking spaces, and social entrepreneurship. Other highly-ranked cities included Stockholm, Los Angeles, and Toronto.

Here are the 20 cities best equipped for Generation Z's particular wants and needs.

running runner fitness exercise workout

  • Google Fit is an easy-to-use app that collects your biometric stats and daily activity data in order to manage your health and fitness.
  • The Google Fit app can collect data from many devices, including smartwatches, fitness trackers, and even smart bathroom scales.
  • The more information you enter into the Google Fit app — from general data like your height and weight, to specifics about an activity you're performing — the better the app can analyze your fitness.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

As you've surely come to expect from Google products, the Google Fit app has a refreshingly simple look, and an easy-to-use interface.

Don't let that simple design fool you, though: behind the scenes, the app crunches data from several sources to create a comprehensive snapshot of your current fitness, and to help you plan your future health goals.

Whereas most fitness tracking programs require the purchase of a specific tracker or device, Google Fit is simply an app you can download on your Android or iOS device. Your phone itself can serve as your hardware, provided you bring it with you during walks, runs, or bike rides.

You can also feed data to Google Fit from other devices, like a POLAR smartwatch, a Fitbit Plus, or even a smart bathroom scale.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Google Pixel 3 (From $799.99 at Best Buy)

iPhone Xs (From $999.99 at Best Buy)

POLAR smartwatch (From $229.95 at Amazon)

Withings smart scale (For $149.99 at Amazon)

How to set up Google Fit

When you first open the Google Fit app, you should take the time to enter information about yourself, starting with your height and weight.

IMG_5468

Then you can enter the types of activities in which you regularly participate. On the app's home screen, tap the colorful plus (+) symbol, then hit "Add activity."

Now tap the little arrow beside the activity selected ("Aerobics" is the default) to choose from options including basketball, golf, open water swimming, and squash. Each time you complete a given activity, enter the time you began and stopped, so Google Fit can calculate the calories you burned.

IMG_5470.PNG

The more you use Google Fit, entering information about your activities, sleep, and body stats, the better the app can help you plan and meet fitness goals.

When you pair the app with a tracker that adds calorie burning stats, heart rate, and other data, you'll get an even more accurate survey of your progress.

3 women tried Patagonia's sustainable workout leggings — here are our reviews of everything from fit to function

Patagonia Leggings 4x3

  • We tried leggings from Patagonia that are made from recycled polyester and have built-in odor control. Below, you'll find three women's reviews.
  • Our experiences with the Centered Tights ($79) and Centered Crops ($69) prove the outdoor company can compete with fitness brands that specialize in workout apparel.
  • They're stretchy, compressive, and sweat-wicking — perfect for a range of physical activities, including yoga, running, and hiking.

Patagonia might be best known for its sweaters, vests, and outdoor gear, but a recent test of some of its leggings now has us repping the socially and environmentally responsibly brand at the gym, too.

After flying under the radar (ours at least), its Centered Tights ($79) and Centered Crops ($69) join our favorite leggings, alongside pairs from fitness-focused brands like Alo Yoga and Under Armour, for their comfort, versatility, and thoughtful construction.

These compressive, high-performance leggings are made from spandex and recycled polyester and further enhanced with the addition of miDori bioSoft and Polygiene. The former wicks away moisture quickly and gives the leggings a comfortable, soft feel, while the latter provides odor control by stopping the growth of odor-causing bacteria on the surface of the fabric. In short, you can move flexibly, feel good, and smell fresh in these leggings. Other notable features include the small hidden key pocket and the selection of both solid and printed styles.

They're also Fair Trade Certified sewn as part of Patagonia's larger mission of paying workers equitably and promoting worker health and safety. The company says it holds the distinction of having more Fair Trade Certified styles than any other apparel brand.

Though the product description for these leggings taps them for yoga, we think they're just as good for high-intensity activities in both indoor and outdoor settings. Wear them to the gym or on a hike, and your legs will thank you.

Read on for our detailed reviews of Patagonia's responsibly produced and performance-oriented leggings.

Patagonia Centered Tights review:

patagonia leggings 4

Centered Tights, $79, available in 4 colors at Patagonia

When I'm preparing for the day ahead of me and packing my gym bag, I don't want to do the mental work of thinking about what type of workout or class I'm going to do, and then what pair of leggings would go best with it. These leggings are the perfect works-for-everything pair that perform whether I'm cycling, weight training, or running. At 8 a.m., I might not have decided how I want to exercise today, but it's good to know that at 6 p.m., I'll feel comfortable and supported as I sweat it out.

The fabric is soft, stretchy, and compressive, and the waistband is nice and wide to hold everything in. I usually sweat a lot, which you can tell over time by the smell of my workout apparel, but the Polygiene odor control built into this pair makes a noticeable difference. I don't have to wash them as often and can wear them more times in a row during the week. I chose the funky Rain Fern print to make my leggings drawer a little more exciting, and like my colorful Athleta Contender leggings, the Patagonia tights definitely stand out at the gym.  —Connie Chen, reporter

Patagonia Centered Crops review:

patagonia leggings 5

Centered Crops, $69, available in 6 colors at Patagonia

I'm a big Patagonia fan and have been for years. The brand consistently delivers high-quality and well-made clothing and gear, so each item you buy should last a long time. My quilted Snap-T Pullover is a few years old, but it wears its age really well despite countless washings.

And the hallmarks of Patagonia construction are all also present in the design of the Centered Crops. No joke, I think I've worn these leggings every day for the last two weeks. They're so comfy for just lounging around! But they're also great for working out since they're made of a thick-ish polyester/spandex knit fabric that offers plenty of stretch, wicks moisture, and resists odor. I usually re-wear my workout clothes a few times before washing them (in an effort to conserve water where I can), and these leggings make for less smelly gym sessions. Ellen Hoffman, director of content strategy

My fellow reviewers are braver than me — I still have to wash these between gym sessions because I like to get disgustingly sweaty and gross during a workout. However, I have noticed that these smell better than the rest of my gym clothes when they're sitting in the hamper!

As for comfort, these are up at the top of my list. I'm unbelievably picky about my leggings, but this pair has all the qualities I like: It's breathable, super stretchy, high-waisted, and the waist band isn't so tight that it squeezes my organs apart (in fact it's just perfectly supportive and not constricting at all). My one gripe was that there was a tag sewn on with fabric info inside that I felt was unnecessary and itchy, and I didn't love that I had to cut it out of the pair and throw it away. Hopefully it's biodegradable or something?

In general, it's really nice to know that these are a more sustainable option than a lot of other workout leggings out there. I love shopping at Patagonia because I can trust that my purchase will align with my values of conscious consumption. —Sally Kaplan, editor

If you want low-maintenance, high-performing leggings that cost under $100 and are responsibly made to boot, try Patagonia's Centered Tights and Centered Crops. You can shop all color options at Patagonia here

26 magical 'Harry Potter' gifts even the most devoted Potterheads will love

Harry Potter Cookie Baking kit

  • If you're looking to gift a "Harry Potter" fan, don't trust anything that wasn't written by one (or, in this case, a pair of them).
  • We put together a list of gift ideas to suit every witch, wizard, and half-blood out there — from baking supplies to reading lamps.

It's hard to imagine someone not being a "Harry Potter" fan, save for You-Know-Who himself. But for that one slightly obsessed friend who has a Deathly Hallows tattoo, is a total wiz at "Harry Potter" trivia, and has re-read the books multiple times, the term "fan" probably doesn't even begin to cover it.

If they have yet to receive their Hogwarts letter, the next best thing they could get might just be one of these gifts. We rounded up something fun for every type of muggle and wizard, from the ones who just love the movies (aka the muggles) to the die-hards who can tell you the answer to what you'd get if you added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood (the wizards).

A pair of sneakers that'll protect your feet when you fall off your broomstick (or skateboard)

Vans X Harry Potter sneakers, $79.95, at Zappos

Coming in different styles and colors for each of the houses (Slytherine's is a low top with a faux snakeskin finish, of course), along with more house-neutral pairs like a Marauder's Map print slip-on, Vans' "Harry Potter" line takes the Rock Cake for the best collab we've seen over the past few years. You can see all the other styles, like backpacks, sweatshirts, and T-shirts, here.

A set of socks any house elf would love to receive

Harry Potter Ankle Socks Pack, $13.64, at Amazon

I hope you'll be buying these for every house elf you know. S.P.E.W. thanks you for your generosity.

An illustrated collection of the "Harry Potter" books to make reading them again feel like a new experience

Harry Potter The Illustrated Collection (Books 1-3), $62.88, at Amazon

Perfect for Potterhead parents, this collection of illustrated books is a child's perfect introduction to the series. Parents can read aloud while children marvel at the gorgeous illustrations as they too fall in love with images of Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, Buckbeak, and Dobby. But this boxed set isn't just for kids. It's the perfect gift for someone who would love to see their beloved universe interpreted in a new way in full color.

A Hedwig jar for your Honeyduke sweets

Harry Potter Hedwig Cookie Jar, $69.95, at Williams Sonoma

Pay homage to this true hero of the Second Wizarding War by giving her a prominent place in the home in the form of this cookie jar. It's the least we can do to honor her great sacrifice. And it's a great place to store the cookies they made with their new Harry Potter cookie cutters.

A Wizard Chess set that won't destroy itself every time you play

Harry Potter Wizard Chess Set, $44, at Amazon

This might be one instance where I prefer the muggle version to the wizard version. This Wizard Chess set doesn't come with the danger of bodily harm when bishop takes knight. It's also convenient for those of use who love to play chess, but just don't have the space in our cursed dungeon to keep the life-sized set.

If you want something more classic, you can opt for these mugs that heat change from black to the original covers of the "Harry Potter" books.

The best women's rain boots you can buy

  • Rain boots don't have to be ugly.
  • We did the research and testing to find the best rain boots that are both good looking and functional.
  • For all-weather durability, a reasonable price point, well-designed construction, and a comfortable fit, you can't beat the cute Sperry Top-Sider Saltwater Rope Emboss Neoprene Rain Boots

Chances are, you've likely been caught in rainy situations because you weren't equipped with proper footwear. It is why rain boots are an essential part of your shoe closet. They may not be the kinds of shoes you'll need to wear every day (or, at least, we're hoping they won't need to be), but it's ideal to be prepared with a solid pair for when unsavory wet weather hits.

There are plenty of rugged, workwear-style rain boots on the market that may be better suited for the likes of outdoor workers or those who live in, say, tropical storm-prone areas. But for the purposes of this particular guide, we're focusing on rain boots for the everyday woman.

For instance, the following water-resistant shoes are great if you need to get from home to the office or run an errand around town, but they may not be ideal if you need to sludge through knee-deep mud or cross shallow rivers. Consider the specific purposes your rain boots need to serve before deciding on a pair to buy.

In general, rain boots are tricky to review and there are no "perfect" styles. Rain boots are inherently uncomfortable, given their non-breathable materials — your feet will inevitably sweat if you have them on for too long, or they will feel damp if your socks happen to get wet. Some styles include a thick insulating lining or lambswool insoles, which may require you to size up if things feel tight. There are also styles that don't include any lining, which means you will have to figure out how thick you plan to wear your socks, which will also determine the sizing of your shoe.

Some styles look more chicly versatile, others are more practical. All this is to say, you need to figure out your personal preferences and how you plan to wear your boots before you buy a pair.

If attractiveness is a top priority and you reside in a climate where you need to ward off only the occasional light showers, there are stylish booties and sneakers with waterproof uppers that may satisfy your needs, without going the full-on "rubber boot" route. Look for styles that call themselves "waterproof," such as the Blondo's Liam Waterproof Suede Bootie ($130, at Zappos). We've included one of these waterproof styles in our guide for reference.

But for those of you who are looking for something more functional and substantial made with sturdier materials, there is sure to be a pair that speaks to you in this guide ahead.

Here are the best rain boots you can buy in 2019:

Malarie Gokey contributed to this article. Updated on 09/06/2019 by Remi Rosmarin and Les Shu: Updated prices, links, and formatting. Added options for luxury rain booties (Aquatalia) and wider calves (UGG).

The best rain boots overall

The Sperry Top-Sider Saltwater Rain Boots are durable after years of wear, well-designed for rain, and work effortlessly into the winter months.

I speak from personal experience when I say that Sperry makes great rain boots — I've been wearing my pair for almost five years now, and they still keep my feet perfectly dry in the rain.

You'll see that this "duck shoe" design from other brands like L.L. Bean and Sorel, and each company offers something slightly different from Sperry. For instance, L.L. Bean offers a resole program, and Sorel's boots have better traction if you plan to go hiking. But Sperry's boots have the advantage of an affordable price in the $100-$120 range, and these Saltwaters can't be beat if you're in need of a simple shoe that keeps your feet dry as you go around town.

The boots come in a wider width, which is good for those of you who have wider feet, but it's important to note that some buyers with narrower feet sized down to get a better fit. Sperry's boots also have a micro-fleece lining for a layer of warmth, a cute and handy side zipper for quicker wear and removal, and a "wavy" outsole design that Sperry says is ideal for "ultimate wet/dry traction."

For snowy days, a decent six-inch shaft is great for walking through snowstorms with confidence. But for me personally, I love a boot that looks just as stylish as it is practical in unpredictable weather. The hardest part will likely be deciding which color to get.

Pros: Comfortable, durable for snow, many color options

Cons: People with narrower feet may find these too big

The best ethically made rain boots

Everlane's rain boots are ethically made of real rubber to protect your feet, and they look so cool no one will know you're wearing rain boots.

Everlane makes lots of great shoes and clothing, and its rain boots are no exception. Five women on the Insider Picks team— myself included — tested these boots out during a nasty Polar Vortex in New York City, and we loved them. We've worn them in many other rain and snow storms since, and they've held up very well.

Everlane's new rain boots are made of soft, flexible real rubber that bends with you as you walk. When I have them on, they just feel like super comfortable shoes — not clunky rain boots. The traction on the bottom sole is key for slippery wet surfaces that can be treacherous like stairs and the subway platform.

These boots actually look cool, too, which isn't something I thought I'd say about rain boots. I ordered my normal boot size — 8 — and they were slightly big, which I liked because I can wear thick socks with them. The rise of the boots is fairly short, though, so you need to judge puddle depth carefully or risk wet feet.

Like all Everlane pieces, the rain boots are also ethically made in a factory with good labor practices, so you can feel good about the boots on your feet. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Made ethically, transparent pricing, real rubber, well made, stylish, comfortable, fun colors

Cons: Not tall

The best lightweight rain boots

With a chic design and low price point, the Sam Edelman Tinsley rain boots are a favorite among fashionable women because they look like an ankle bootie.

If you're looking for a pair of stylish rain boots that won't break the bank, Sam Edelman's Tinsley rain boots will do the trick. Given that Sam Edelman is a purveyor of trend-forward apparel and accessories, the Tinsley is likely to be one of the chicer and more aesthetically-pleasing types of rain boots you'll come across.

With its Chelsea boot-inspired silhouette and monochromatic all-black color, the Tinsley is ideal if looks and pricing are top priority factors. After all, we know that rain boots aren't the sexiest kinds of shoes to wear.

Like many ankle boots, the Tinsley have stretchy elastic side panels and a pull-on back tab. These boots have a cute, one-and-a-half-inch low heel and a rather impressive five-inch shaft, which makes this a capable boot in the likes of shallow slush.

But be aware: Buyer reviews most complained about the sizing of the Tinsley. Since there are no half sizes available and the shoe runs on the narrow side, those with wider feet found this shoe uncomfortable. If you're considering this style, you may want to order both up and down in two sizes if you're somewhere in-between, and return the one that doesn't work.

Also consider the thickness of your socks or inserts you might want to include, which may ensure a better overall fit.

Pros: Stylish silhouette, comes in both glossy or matte finish

Cons: Customers with wider widths found this style too narrow, no half sizes available

The best rain boots for serious rainfall

The Hunter Original Tall Rain Boots are as iconic as they come with a generous 16-inch shank and durable latex construction that can handle anything.

These Hunter rain boots are another cult favorite amongst the fashionable set, especially as a summer music festival outfit staple when outdoor events become wet and muddy. Given that these Wellington-style boots have a rise of 16 inches and are constructed out of a substantial latex upper and rubber sole, the Hunters are a lifesaver when it comes to torrential rain or snowfall.

Without a doubt, they can get you through deep puddles, slippery mud, inches of snow, and downpours with nonchalance. If you reside in a climate where rain falls more often than other areas, or if the winters are particularly brutal with blizzards, the Original Tall Rain Boots are a solid option to consider for days when the big guns need to come out.

Given their sheer height and thick materials, it should come as no surprise that these boots are a bit on the heavier side. They weigh about five pounds, which isn't too bad considering they work extra-hard to keep most of your bottom leg dry, but they may not be the most comfortable footwear for all-day wear.

The boots are ones you slip-on and slip-off, which means that those with wider calves will want to take note of the 15-inch opening.  Some reviewers have noted that the boot was too tight around the shaft. On the flip side, those with very narrow calves should also note that too much space around the opening is an unwelcome invitation for rain or snow to fall through. Luckily for you, Hunter offers other styles of this same boot, some with shorter shaft lengths.

Pros: Great for heavy rain and snow, other shaft lengths available, many color options

Cons: Customers with wide calves may find the shoe too tight, style runs slightly big

The best rain boots that aren't rubber

Timberland's Nellie Lace Up Utility Waterproof Boots are a fantastic and durable option if you don't care for the "rubber rain boot" aesthetic and want a practical style that works for year-round weather.

When researching for this shopping guide, the top brands that kept coming up were ones that carry a legacy for their workwear-approved status. One such brand is Timberland, which is a company that innovated the waterproof workwear boot in the mid-'60s by directly attaching the soles to the uppers without stitching — thus, removing any small openings where moisture could potentially seep in.

Furthermore, Timberland is well-known for its use of waterproof nubuck leather, which is finely sanded cattle leather that begets that fine-grain, suede-like texture you see on the wheat-colored heritage Timberland styles. Nubuck is far more durable and stronger than suede because it comes from the outer hide. With decades of trust behind this company, it's no surprise that a sleeker iteration like the Nellie Lace Up has found newfound fans.

This particular style is exclusive to Macy's, and it is chosen simply for its impressively sleek and streamlined design, modified from the chunkier, classic men's version, although other variations are available. The boots have a thick, one-inch heel made from the brand's heavy-duty lug outsole that offers strong grip and traction fit for rain- and snow-based outdoor work.

The sole is also constructed with the company's "anti-fatigue technology," which means the midsole offers phenomenal support for people who are on their feet all day. Linings and footbed covers are made of a breathable mesh material, which relieves feet from over-sweating.

Though the Nellie is a hardworking style, the company recommends that customers actively take care of the boot's materials to further preserve the shoe. Care instructions are available on the Timberland website, for those who are interested.

Pros: Doesn't look like a rain boot, exceptional support, ideal for outdoor work and durable in snow

Cons: Requires care and upkeep to make the shoe long-lasting

Best for wider calves

The UGG Sienna Boots have a wider calf and easy pull-on style, making them a great option for all shoe sizes.

UGG is best-known for their supersoft shearling booties, so you know that their rain boots will be very comfortable.

With over 1,000 five-star reviews on Zappos, the Sienna Boots were an easy addition to this list. A thick rubber sole gives these a classic, chunky rain boot feel that's perfect for stomping through puddles. The waterproof rubber upper hits about mid-calf, so be careful if you are splashing around, as the rest of your leg may easily get wet.

The rubber upper is relatively wide, making it a great option for those with wider calves. Given that most rain boots are made of stiff rubber, which is not particularly stretchy, it can be difficult to feel comfortable if the calves don't have enough give. Many reviewers note that this is the first pair of rain boots they have felt fit both their calves and feet well. Additionally, many suggest sizing down if you are between sizes.

In classic UGG fashion, the insole is lined with sheepskin. This will add some softness, but don't expect that much warmth. If you want to wear these in place of snowboots on a cold day, you should layer a pair of thick socks underneath.

At $70, these are a fair price for all that you're getting. Durable rubber, soft sheepskin, and a range of fun colors to choose from make these an easy choice for anyone. — Remi Rosmarin

Pros: Good for wider feet and calves, affordable, warm, lots of color options

Cons: Not that tall, stiff rubber

The best luxury rain boots

The Aquatalia Tilly Weatherproof Booties are trendy with their suede bootie style, but a weatherproof finish makes them perfect for rainy days.

Rubber rain boots are probably the most appropriate choice when it comes to trekking through a downpour and getting home with dry feet. But, they can really put a damper on a great outfit.

Aquatalia makes boots that don't sacrifice on style or practicality. The brand uses exclusive weatherproofing and stain-resistant technology to inhibit water penetration and prevent stains from forming. The suede is soft and supple, but repels water, and resists salt and other agents from the sidewalk that can cause discoloration, making it just as good for rain as it is for light snow and dirt. In the end, you get a boot that looks nothing like a rain boot, but will protect your feet from water just as well.

The Tilly boasts a chunky block heel for a lift that you can actually walk in, which also bodes well in giving you a boost above puddles. The boot's suede upper has a fitted look, which is very of-the-moment, but also means you likely won't be able to layer thick socks underneath. The range of neutral colors make this pair perfect for fall.

While these shoes are undeniably pricey at $450 a pair, buyers say they have lasted them multiple seasons. They praise the pair for striking the balance between fashion and function, though many also note that the slim calf is not for everyone. — Remi Rosmarin

Pros: Chic style, made from high-quality materials, weatherproof finish

Cons: Expensive, run slightly small

  • If your dog has been diagnosed with a nutritional deficiency or a specific health problem, your veterinarian may recommend a supplement.
  • Keep in mind the risk for overdose and take the time to choose a veterinarian-recommended supplement made with high-quality ingredients and formulated in the proper dosage for your dog.
  • Featuring a delicious chicken flavor and a well-rounded blend of essential vitamins and minerals, PetHonesty 10-for-1 Multivitamins can help to support your dog's mobility, digestion, energy, and skin health with a potent, high-concentration formula that your dog will think is a treat.

You care about your dog's health, so you do your best to feed it a nutritionally balanced diet. Thanks to regulatory organizations like the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), most commercial dog foods are formulated to meet a dog's minimum nutritional needs. What many dog owners fail to realize, however, is that not all dog foods are created equal. In fact, many dog food recipes leave something to be desired when it comes to optimal levels of key nutrients.

If your doctor were to tell you there's a deficiency in your diet, you would probably think about taking a supplement. Why shouldn't the same be true for your dog? Dog supplements are very easy to find, but the problem is that there are so many of them it can be difficult to tell which one is best or even which ones you should consider. You should defer to your veterinarian for nutritional advice, but it never hurts to ask whether your dog might benefit from taking a supplement.

The good news for you is that we've done the research to determine the five most common supplements veterinarians recommend for dogs, so you know how to open a conversation with your vet. We've also taken the time to pick out some of the best options for each of these five supplements.

Here are our top picks for the best supplements for dogs:

The best multivitamin supplement for dogs

Featuring a delicious chicken flavor and a well-rounded blend of essential vitamins and minerals, PetHonesty 10-for-1 Multivitamins With Glucosamine are formulated to support your dog's mobility, digestion, energy, and skin health in a potent, high-concentration formula that your dog will think is a treat.

More than 50% of adults in the US take a multivitamin every day, though a small percentage of those people actually need them. The same is true for your dog. Unless your dog has been diagnosed with numerous nutritional deficiencies, don't assume that adding a multivitamin will benefit its health. In fact, adding a multivitamin to an already balanced diet can lead to an overdose on certain nutrients. Dogs who eat very little, follow a homemade diet, or are very picky eaters may benefit from a multivitamin, but only with a vet's approval.

If your veterinarian recommends a multivitamin for your dog, try PetHonesty 10-for-1 Multivitamin. This multivitamin features a potent, high-concentration formula designed to support 10 unique aspects of your dog's health. These supplements may help to boost your dog's energy level, regulate its digestion, improve skin and coat health, and strengthen its immunity in addition to a number of other health benefits. Best of all, the multivitamin comes in a chewy formula with an irresistible chicken flavor so your dog will think it's a treat.

The Goody Pet includes this multivitamin in their list of top picks, commenting on its high nutritional value and multifaceted benefits.

Though there are many high-quality dog multivitamins out there, few carry as many potential benefits as PetHonesty 10-for-1 Multivitamin

Pros: Formulated with 18 nutrients for optimal health, improves 10 aspects of dog's health, made in the US, highly concentrated formula

Cons: Contains some artificial flavor, can be expensive for higher doses (1 chew per 25 pounds body weight), some dogs don't tolerate oil well

The best omega-3 supplement for dogs

Made from wild-caught Alaskan salmon, this omega-3 fatty acid supplement comes in a handy pump bottle for easy administration. It is loaded with EPA and DHA to nourish your dog's skin and coat while supporting numerous other aspects of its health.

Easily one of the most popular supplements for dogs, omega-3 fatty acid supplements provide a number of important benefits. Found primarily in fish oil, DHA and EPA are two powerful omega-3 fatty acids for brain health, supporting everything from memory to cognitive function. Omega-3s are also important for reducing inflammation, improving eyesight, and supporting nervous system function. They also play a role in skin and coat health for dogs. Our top pick for the best omega-3 fatty acid supplement for dogs is Zesty Paws Wild Omega-3 Fish Oil Supplement

Produced in an FDA-registered facility in the USA, Zesty Paws Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil is made from wild-caught Alaskan salmon, not farmed salmon. This improves the quality and reduces the potential for heavy metals and other toxins that could harm your dog. It comes in a handy pump bottle for easy administration and contains high levels of EPA and DHA to provide a wide range of health benefits for your dog.

K9 of Mine names Zesty Paws their top pick for fish oil supplements for dogs, commenting that most dogs like the flavor of the oil. They also note that while leaky pumps are sometimes a problem, the manufacturer is responsible about addressing issues. The Spruce Pets also names this supplement their best overall choice due to its multifaceted benefits and easy administration.

On Amazon, many customers report that their dogs love the taste of Zesty Paws Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil and that they can see a noticeable improvement in skin, coat, and joint health.

Sold in a 30-pack box, Purina Pro Plan FortiFlora Canine Probiotic Supplement is incredibly easy to administer and yields predictable results. This probiotic is formulated to support your dog's digestive health and help maintain a healthy microflora balance in its digestive tract.

Probiotics are simply beneficial bacteria that live in your dog's digestive tract. When those beneficial bacteria become overrun by harmful bacteria, it can lead to a number of unpleasant symptoms including inflammation, infection, allergic reactions, and upset stomach. Probiotic supplements help maintain the optimal balance of good versus bad bacteria and can also boost your dog's digestion and strengthen its immune system. Our top pick for the best probiotic supplement for dogs is Purina Pro Plan FortiFlora Canine Probiotic Supplement

This Purina Pro Plan FortiFlora Canine Probiotic Supplement comes in a box of 30 packets, each containing 1 gram of probiotics proven to promote healthy and normal intestinal microflora. The Spruce Pets names Purina Pro Plan FortiFlora their best overall pick for canine probiotic supplements, commenting on how easy it is to administer. They also note that it can help resolve a variety of digestive issues including gas and diarrhea. Even the Chicago Tribune reviews this probiotic favorably, calling it "highly palatable" and recommending it for dogs after taking a course of antibiotics.

The best glucosamine supplement for dogs

Made with three powerful joint-supporting compounds, this glucosamine supplement comes in an easy-to-administer chewable tablet and is sold in bottles of 132 or 250 for your convenience.

Joint problems are fairly common in older dogs, particularly for larger breeds. One of the best supplements to support joint health in dogs is glucosamine. Often given in combination with chondroitin, glucosamine is naturally found in the fluid surrounding your dog's joints and loss of glucosamine can lead to stiff joints, decreased mobility, and arthritis. In terms of supplemental glucosamine, it typically comes from the shells of shellfish, though it can also be produced in a laboratory setting. Our top pick for the best glucosamine supplement for dogs is Nutramax Cosequin DS Plus MSM Chewable Tablets

This Nutramax Cosequin DS Plus MSM Chewable Tablets features a maximum-strength formula that combines three powerful joint-supporting compounds — glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and MSM. These chewable tablets support cartilage production and protect your dog's existing cartilage from breaking down. • The Fuwaku Rugby Club, which stages full-contact rugby matches for players over 40 years old, was the first club of its kind in Japan.
  • Players as old as 90 still play competitively for the Tokyo side.
  • "Since I joined Fuwaku Club, I have broken ribs many times and broke my collarbone too." 86-year-old Ryuichi Nagayama told Reuters, adding: "I don't mind dying playing rugby."

Rugby isn't a sport you would typically suggest as a way for the elderly to keep fit.

But at Fuwaku Rugby Club in Tokyo, men in their 90s are still getting their boots dirty and their bodies bruised in anticipation for first ever Rugby World Cup to be held on Japanese soil.

Fuwaku, founded in 1948, was the first club of its kind, but is now just one of 150 across Japan to hold competitive, full-contact games for over 40s.

From mauls to scrums and from line-outs to rucks, the veteran players at Fuwaku take a no-holds-barred approach to the sport they love, playing just as they would have done as youngsters, and just as the pros will when the World Cup kicks off on September 20.

"Since I joined Fuwaku Club, I have broken ribs many times and broke my collarbone too," 86-year-old lock Ryuichi Nagayama told Reuters.

"There are many other things too. When I noticed an irregular pulse, I would take medicine to adjust. So, I can still do it. I can't stand not playing. That's it. This may sound strange, but I have lost my wife years ago and now I would say I don't mind dying playing rugby."

Scroll down for all the exercise motivation you'll ever need.

Stretching before a game becomes even more important when you're nearly 90 years old.

The tackling can be a bit tougher, but that doesn't stop them from putting their heads where it hurts.

Rucks are just as chaotic as they are in other leagues...

...But line-outs prove a bit more difficult, especially with the sun in your eyes.

That one's going to hurt in the morning.

Every club needs a solid number 9...

...As well as a sturdy front row. (scrum hats on, boys)

Flip-flops are a rugby essential for a post-match shower.

As ever with rugby players, however, the after game social remains the most important part.

HOKULANI Still with toys

A superyacht reportedly once owned by actress Nicole Kidman is up for sale, according to yacht management firm Imperial.

The superyacht's price is being kept under wraps, however. Potential buyers will only see the price tag after submitting an application to Imperial.

The yacht shares the Hawaiian name Kidman told InStyle Magazine that her parents gave her at birth: "Hokulani." (Kidman was actually born on the Hawaiian island of Oahu but is Australian by nationality.) The actress (best known for her roles in the television drama "Big Little Lies" and the films "Moulin Rouge!" and "The Hours") is next set to star as news anchor Gretchen Carlson in "Bombshell," a film about Fox News, alongside Charlize Theron as Megyn Kelly, Insider previously reported.

Kidman's last estimated net worth was $338 million Australian (or $259 million US), according to the Australian Financial Review's 2017 Rich List; she was ranked the 197th richest Australian that year. While Hokulani's ownership hasn't been confirmed by either Kidman or Imperial, the Independent reported in 2008 that Kidman owned and subsequently abandoned the yacht (which was built by Palmer Johnson, designed by Nuvolari Lenard, and launched in 2007, according to Imperial) in a Sydney marina when she moved out of a nearby apartment complex.

Keep reading to learn more about the superyacht and for a closer look at the distinctive watercraft.

Despite its luxurious amenities, Kidman reportedly "abandoned" the superyacht in a Sydney marina after relocating to Tennessee with husband Keith Urban.

"A spokesman for Kidman told the Sydney Morning Herald that the boat had been left at the marina because she had contemplated buying another apartment in the same block, which did not happen," The Independent reported in 2008.

Inside Teterboro Airport, NYC's private jet airport, where celebrities slip in unnoticed and Jeffrey Epstein was arrested on sex trafficking charges in July

teterboro airport

  • Teterboro Airport is New York City's private jet airport, where celebrities slip into the city unnoticed and where Jeffrey Epstein was arrested on sex trafficking charges on July 6.
  • It's only about 12 miles from Manhattan, making it the closest private jet airport to the city.
  • Teterboro has five fixed-base operators (FBOs) responsible for aircraft services including passenger handling, aircraft fueling, parking, maintenance, charters, rentals, and more.
  • The airport's FBOs, like the award-winning Meridian Teterboro, offer some swanky amenities including lounges, a gym, a private movie theater, and hotel and limousine concierge services.
  • Despite those offerings, a visit to the airport showed me that the true luxury of flying through Teterboro lies not in its amenities, but in the time it allows travelers to save.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Just 12 miles from New York City, Teterboro Airport in New Jersey is the city's primary private jet airport.

Teterboro is a general aviation airport, which means its main purpose is to remove smaller, slower aircraft — i.e. private jets — from the regional air traffic and reduce congestion at the commercial airports such as Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport.

Celebrities like Miley Cyrus, Usher, and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been spotted at Teterboro, and late financier Jeffrey Epstein, who recently died in jail while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, was arrested at the New Jersey airport in July.

I recently spent a few hours at the airport and got a tour of some of its facilities — here's what it was like.

Teterboro Airport in New Jersey is the main private jet airport serving New York City.

The 827-acre airport in Teterboro, New Jersey, is a general aviation airport, which means its main purpose is to remove smaller, slower aircraft — i.e. private jets — from the regional air traffic and reduce congestion at the commercial airports such as Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport.

Teterboro is only about 12 miles from Manhattan, making it the closest private jet airport to the city.

Depending on traffic, it's only about a 30-minute drive from Teterboro to Midtown Manhattan.

Opened in 1919, Teterboro Airport is the oldest operating airport in the New York and New Jersey metro area, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

"During the 1920s, Teterboro Airport was at the center of America's golden age of aviation," The New York Times reported in 1976.

Famous aviators including Charles A. Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart spent time at the airport.

Today, many celebrities pass through the airport as an alternative to the area's major commercial airports: Newark Liberty International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport.

Stars including Miley Cyrus, Usher, and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have been spotted there.

Jeffrey Epstein, the financier who recently died in jail while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges, was arrested at Teterboro Airport in July.

Teterboro isn't served by commercial airlines like Delta or United. Instead, when someone flies in or out of Teterboro, they go through what's called a fixed base operator, or an FBO.

FBOs are responsible for aircraft services including passenger handling, aircraft fueling, parking, maintenance, charters, and de-icing. They also handle towing and baggage handling, car rentals, hotel reservations, and some include pilot lounges.

The five FBOs operating at Teterboro are Atlantic Aviation, Jet Aviation, Signature Flight Support, Signature Flight Support - South, and Meridian Teterboro.

On a recent summer day, I took the PATH train and a Lyft from Business Insider's Manhattan office to Teterboro Airport.

I was on my way to get a tour of the airport and its facilities with the marketing director of Meridian Teterboro, which was recently voted the top FBO in the northeast and one of the top 5% in the US by an Aviation International News survey.

But one does not simply drive into Teterboro Airport.

My Lyft was stopped at the gate, and the security guard asked to see both my ID and the driver's ID.

I was on a visitors list, so we were let in without any problem.

Meridian Teterboro's 30,000-square-foot executive terminal includes a lobby, lounges and rest areas, work stations, a gym with showers and lockers, a pool table, and a private movie theater.

Meridian Teterboro, which started as a maintenance business, is "like a fancy gas station for private planes," Kirk Stephen, Meridian's director of marketing, told me jokingly.

Travelers passing through Meridian Teterboro are personally greeted by the customer service team at the reception desk.

Betsy Wines, Meridian's vice president of customer service and human resources who's been at Meridian for 34 years, told me that many of Meridian's customers are repeat customers that the team knows by name.

Meridian's customer service team handles any special customer requests as well as hotel reservation, rental cars, and limousines.

The lobby is airy and bright, with high ceilings and walls of glass.

It's filled with comfortable seating and several large plants. Stephen likens Meridian's facilities to a "five-star hotel."

Having visited the 5-star hotel Amangani in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, not long before I went to Teterboro, I'm not quite sure that's a claim I agree with. Teterboro's airport was sparkling clean and modern, but the rooms and lobby in Amangani were full of texture, sumptuous wood accents, and furniture that was designed to look rustic but was clearly extremely expensive.

I get where Stephen was going with the comparison, though: Teterboro's interior is far nicer than any airport I've been to — and miles ahead of nearby LaGuardia, one of the most hated airports in the US.

Most of Meridian's clientele go straight to and from their planes rather than lingering in the terminal, so facilities like the work stations and rest areas are more often used by pilots passing through the airport, according to Stephen.

"Usually passengers just want to just want to walk through and get out and get to where they're going, but the pilots may have to be here for a while, so we wanted to provide those amenities for them," Stephen said.

In a lounge with a TV and pool table, I saw one pilot taking a nap on a couch and another relaxing in an armchair.

Pilots can get some shut-eye in a windowless rest area where small pillows and blankets are provided.

The terminal also includes a gym outfitted with cardio and weight lifting equipment.

There's even a private 10-seat movie theater.

Most people who pass through Meridian Teterboro are business travelers, both companies and individuals, according to Stephen.

"Most people think that private jets are for, you know, celebrities and athletes and [that] it's a luxury segment," Stephen said. "There are people that use private jets for those reasons, but believe it or not, the vast majority of private jets are used for business."

While it could take days for a business traveler to fly commercial between certain destinations, "if you have a private jet, you can go from A to B to C to D all in a very short period of time," he said. "So it's really saving time that's saving money for businesses."

On a slow day, about 40 planes pass through Meridian's terminal. On a busier day, it could be up to 80.

In 2018, Teterboro Airport saw more than 174,000 total take-offs and landings, according to data from the Federal Aviation Administration.

Meridian is coming up on one of its busiest times of the year, according to Stephen, including the day after Labor Day, New York Fashion Week, and the United Nations General Assembly, all in September.

Meridian operates its own charter fleet of 20 planes, which range from mid-size aircraft to ultra-long-range planes that can travel almost halfway around the world without having to stop for fuel.

While costs can vary, chartering a small plane with eight seats starts at about $3,500 per hour, while a larger plane that can hold about 16 people can go up to $11,000 per hour, according to Chris Battaglia, Meridian Teterboro's director of charter sales.

Meridian has three hangars: two are 40,000 square feet (one of which is new), and one is 20,000 square feet.

In the hangars, Meridian's maintenance team services, repairs, and cleans planes.

I got to take a peek into one of Meridian's planes, a Gulfstream G200.

The G200 has a roughly 25-foot by seven-foot cabin and can carry eight to 10 passengers.

It has a range of about 3,800 miles and a maximum speed of 541 miles per hour.

The interior is luxuriously appointed with beige leather seats and wood veneer.

The G200 includes seven leather armchairs and a divan that seats three people.

A small additional seat can be used in the bathroom.

Water bottles and a basket of snacks are placed on board before each charter.

Meridian's customer service team does its best to accommodate any request of its clientele, no matter how outlandish.

"You know, you'll have a customer call that wants to maybe a particular bottle of wine or Champagne," Wines said, "or there's someone's birthday on an aircraft and the crew will call and say, 'Can you get me a birthday cake and some balloons or some flowers?'"

Those are normal requests, she said. But they've also had a customer call mid-flight and say something like, "Look, my boss forgot his suitcase and he's supposed to play tennis with somebody."

Wines' team will ask for the correct sizes, go to the store, and buy a full tennis outfit to have waiting at the terminal.

Unlike at a typical commercial airport, Teterboro customers don't have to bundle their liquids in one tiny plastic bag or take off their shoes and pass through a full-body scanner.

In fact, they don't even necessarily have to show up for their flight on-time — it's not going to leave without them.

"But you know, if time is money, they'll be there when they're supposed to be there," Stephen said. "Otherwise, it could cost them more money, or if they're expecting to land in a certain place and they have to be there by a certain time ... they can put themselves in jeopardy by not getting to where they need to be. But for the most part, they can probably be here a half hour beforehand and it would be OK."

In addition to their charter and aircraft handling services, Meridian manages aircraft for private jet owners, which includes flight operations, maintenance, and charter sales for those owners who charter their planes to mitigate costs.

I wasn't allowed to take photos of travelers at Teterboro, but I did see a small group of people walking out onto the tarmac to board a jet. They were dressed in business casual attire.

While the amenities at Meridian Teterboro were perfectly comfortable, the airport as a whole was much less glamorous than I'd expected.

After my tour of Teterboro, it was clear that's because the true luxury of flying through the private jet airport is saving time.

Teterboro's proximity to Manhattan — one of the major business centers of the world — as well as the hours saved by not having to show up to an airport two or three hours early or adhere to commercial flight schedules, embody the airport's true appeal to business travelers.

The VSCO girl has taken over the internet in 2019.

Named after the photo-editing VSCO app, the VSCO girl is easy to spot on Instagram or IRL (in real life). She can be the girl on the street, but she can also be a popular influencer, like Emma Chamberlain. But she's not just appearing on her own social media channels.

Media outlets from Buzzfeed News and Cosmopolitan to The New York Times and The Cut have all commented on the rise of the VSCO girl.

"Normally when you're talking about a VSCO girl, it is predominantly people who are white and very skinny and they own all these big name brands," Caiti DeCort, a 15-year-old YouTuber, told Lauren Strapagiel of Buzzfeed News. "So typically it's associated with being rich."

The VSCO girl has also been parodied online. But while some love to hate on the cool-girl, carefree aesthetic, others aspire to it.

A VSCO girl is easy to spot. She tries to embody a '90s-meets-surfer-girl look. Here, the ultimate starter kit on how to be a VSCO girl, from the uniform to the lifestyle.

Boeing VC25 Air Force One

  • The Boeing VC25 is arguably the most famous jetliner in the world.
  • Most people know the plane by the callsign it's assigned when the President of the United States is on board, Air Force One
  • A larger number of prominent international leaders have some form of executive transport with the Boeing 747jumbo jet and the Airbus A330/A340 popular options.

The Boeing VC25 is arguably the most famous jetliner in the world, even though most people have never heard of it.

Most people do know it, though, by the callsign it's assigned when the President of the United States is on board: Air Force One.

Air Force One is instantly recognizable — both as the President's airplane and as a flying symbol of American military and economic might. With its hand-polished blue, white, and silver livery, Air Force One boldly proclaims the arrival of the most powerful man in the world.

Read more: Here's a look back at the incredible history of Air Force One.

What many people don't know is that there isn't one, but two nearly identical Boeing jets that serve as the official transport of the president. Normally, the planes are referred to by their tail numbers — 28000 and 29000 — but when the Commander and Chief steps on board, they take on the call sign "Air Force One." In fact, presidential airplanes didn't begin using the Air Force One designation until 1959.

The two VC25 jets are actually based on the civilian Boeing 747-200, but with modifications to make it suitible for presidental transport.

The president's pair of Boeing 747-200 series-based jets are operated by the Presidential Airlift Group out of Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

The US President is not the only one to have his or her own "presidential jet." In fact, a larger number of prominent international leaders have some form of executive transport. The Boeing 747 jumbo jet is a popular option for many nations including China, India, and South Korea, and, until recently, Japan. While the Airbus A330 and A340 are also commonly found in presidential fleets.

Here's a closer look at how the presidents, chancellors, and prime ministers of the world travel.

1. The United States of America: The US president's Boeing VC25 is a heavily modified version of the Boeing 747-200 airliner.

It entered service in 1990 and is expected to be replaced by new planes — with a new livery — based on the Boeing 747-8 Intercontinental in 2024.

On some occasions, the US President has been known to use the Boeing 757-200-based C-32 aircraft as well.

2. The Russian Federation: The President of Russia's fleet of domestically produced aircraft is headlined by five heavily modified Ilyushin IL-96-300PU airliners.

The Russian President has also been known to fly on a fleet of smaller executive aircraft based on Tupolev TU-214 airliners.

2. The Federal Republic of Germany: The German Chancellor's fleet includes a pair of modified Airbus A340-300 airliners that once flew for Lufthansa.

The German fleet also features several Airbus A320-family-based executive jets.

3. The People's Republic of China: The Chinese do not have a dedicated presidential jet. Instead, it uses Boeing 747-400 airliners pulled for the Air China fleet.

However, with the 747-400 becoming increasingly dated, Beijing is reportedly working on a converting one of Air China's 747-8 Intercontinental airliners into a full-time presidential jet.

5. Japan: Since 1993, the Japanese Prime Minister's plane of choice has been a pair of modified Boeing 747-400s. However, the duo will be replaced this year by a pair of brand new Boeing 777-300ERs.

One of the two jets that served as the Japanese Air Force One was recently listed for sale on an aviation classifieds site. It'll set you back a cool $28 million.

5. The French Republic: the President of France's primary jet is an ex-Swissair Airbus A330-200 that has been converted into a VIP transport.

France's presidential fleet also includes several Airbus A310-300s and Airbus A340-200s.

6. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland: The UK Prime Minister's official transport is a Royal Air Force Airbus A330MRTT that has been outfitted with 58 business class seats.

The plane was converted for VIP duties in 2015 but can still serve as a refueling tanker when not on state business.

Until 2015, the UK Prime Minister chartered commercial jets for state visits.

7. The Republic of Korea: The South Korean president conducts official state visits using a converted Boeing 747-400 leased from Korean Air.

8. The Federative Republic of Brazil: The Brazilian President's main long-haul transport is an Airbus A319-based corporate jet. Brazil's presidential fleet also features several domestically produced Embraer VIP transports.

9. Canada: The Canadian PM flies onboard a fleet of modified Airbus A310-300s dubbed the CC-150 Polaris.

10. The Republic of Poland: The Polish presidential fleet features a variety of new VIP transports including Embraer E-Jets, Gulfstream G550s, and Boeing 737 BBJs.

11. The Republic of India: The Indian PM traditionally flies aboard Air India Boeing 747-400s operated by the Indian Air Force. However, the aging jumbo jet is reportedly set to be replaced by a new customized Boeing 777-300ER.

12. The Republic of Turkey: The Turkish presidential fleet is one of the more impressive in the world. It includes a variety of wide-body commercial airliners that have been converted into VIP transports including Airbus A330-200s, ...

... Airbus A340-500s, and...

... a Boeing 747-8I private jet reportedly gifted to Turkey by the Qatari government.

13. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea: North Korea's official VIP transports are Soviet-era Ilyushin IL-62M. However, North Korean leadership has more recently used trains and aircraft provided by China.

14. The Republic of Côte d'Ivoire: Ivorian presidential fleet includes an Airbus A319 corporate jet.

15. The Islamic Republic of Iran: The Iranian President's latest VIP transport is an Airbus A340-300 that once flew with Air Canada and Turkish Airlines.

16. Commonwealth of Australia: The Australian PM's fleet includes several Boeing 737 BBJs. However, a Royal Australian Air Force Airbus A330MRTT is reportedly being converted into a long-range VIP transport.

Apple's biggest event of the year is happening next week — here's everything it's expected to announce (AAPL)

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple

  • Apple is holding a special event on September 10, where it's expected to announce new iPhones, a new Apple Watch, and more.
  • The biggest new feature reportedly coming to the new iPhone will be a triple-lens camera that can capture photos with a wider field of view.
  • We may also learn more about Apple's streaming TV service that it initially unveiled in March, as well as software updates for the iPhone, Mac, and other products.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Apple's new iPhone is set to be unveiled next week.

Apple is holding an event on September 10 at the Steve Jobs Theater on its Apple Park campus, where it's expected to make several announcements about upcoming products— the biggest of which will likely be the debut of three new iPhones.

Apple is launching its new iPhone — as it has done every September since 2012 — at a time when the smartphone market has been in decline for seven consecutive quarters. With iPhone sales dwindling, the Cupertino, California-based technology giant has increasingly focused on other burgeoning product areas such as its services and wearables division. We're likely to hear more about what Apple has in store for those product categories as well.

Here's everything we're expecting to see from Apple CEO Tim Cook and his crew of execs at the big event, which starts at 10 a.m. Pacific on Tuesday.

Three new iPhones

The star of the show will undoubtedly be the introduction of three new iPhones to succeed the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR. It's unclear what these new iPhones will be called, but rumors suggest the two new high-end iPhones could be called the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.

The biggest change coming in this year's iPhone will likely be the introduction of a triple camera sensor, which would put Apple's smartphones on par with Android rivals. That third camera will likely be an ultra wide-angle camera much like the one found on Samsung's Galaxy S10, which offers a significantly wider field of view.

Otherwise, the new iPhones are expected to feature reverse wireless charging, which would allow users to power accessories like AirPods just by resting them on the back of the phone, and improved Face ID. The less expensive iPhone XR may also come in new colors including green and purple.

That's all according to reports from Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal, and comments made by TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo that have been reported by 9to5Mac and other Apple blogs.

A new Apple Watch

Apple traditionally releases a new Apple Watch alongside its fresh iPhones in September, so there's a chance it could do so again this year.

The next-generation Apple Watch, which could be called the Apple Watch Series 5, may come in new finishes, according to Bloomberg. These new options could include titanium and ceramic, as a leak hidden in the watchOS 6 beta discovered by iHelp BR indicates.

Apple is also expected to introduce sleep tracking to the Apple Watch, a feature that competitors like Fitbit have long offered, reports Bloomberg.

More details on Apple's upcoming services

Apple took the wraps off its long-rumored move into subscription-based entertainment services in March.

But it has yet to announce crucial details about Apple TV Plus and Apple Arcade, such as how much these services will cost, when they will be released, or what the selection of content will be like at launch.

We're expecting to get at least some of those answers during Apple's fall event, especially considering the company has been releasing trailers for upcoming shows that will be part of Apple TV Plus.

New software for iPhones, iPads, and more

Apple will also probably announce when the new software updates for its product lineup will be available, as it has done during its September event in years past.

Apple unveiled new software for the iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV during its Worldwide Developers Conference in June, as it usually does during the event. The updates typically roll out to the general public in the fall, usually in the September timeframe, so there's a strong chance we'll learn more about the availability of these updates next week.

Other miscellaneous product announcements

Apple is rumored to be working on several other new gadgets, although it's unclear if we'll see them next week since the company usually focuses its September keynote on iPhone and Apple Watch announcements.

The company is expected to launch a new MacBook Pro with a 16-inch screen, a new iPad Pro, and a new entry-level iPad before the year is over, according to Bloomberg. It also hasn't announced when the $6,000 Mac Pro it unveiled in June will be released. However, Apple typically waits until October to debut new Mac and iPad products, so we may not see these new products just yet.

Apple may also be working on a Tile-like Bluetooth accessory that you can place on items like your keys or wallet to track them via your iPhone, according to 9to5Mac

An emphasis on privacy

Apple has emphasized the importance of privacy in recent years, especially as companies like Facebook and Google have come under fire for the way they collect and handle consumer data.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has publicly said on numerous occasions that privacy is a fundamental human right, and that the consumer is not the product for Apple since its business doesn't heavily rely on advertising as Google and Facebook products do. It's even centered its product adsaround privacy in recent months.

There's a chance Apple executives will mention privacy and security again during its expected iPhone unveil next week.

Flight attendants fly a lot, so they get plenty of opportunities to hone their travel skills.

Six flight attendants told Business Insider their best travel hacks. Most asked for anonymity due to a fear of reprisal from their employer.

Here's what they said.

Read the fine print when you buy your ticket

"It's worth reading all that fine print in those disclaimers," said Alexandrea Tiller, a flight attendant for Spirit Airlines. Doing so could save money on your carry-on bags, she said.

Use the website Skyscanner to find the lowest fares

"I've found a lot of great deals on there," Tiller said of Skyscanner.

Always bring a water bottle

"I always travel with a reusable water bottle," a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines said. "Every airport, in the US at least, has a spot to fill your water bottle."

Always bring a portable charger

"I always travel with a portable charger," the Delta flight attendant said. "Not all airports have a ton of chargers or outlets or you can't get to them, and some older airplanes don't have them, or there'll only be two for the whole row of three."

Are you a flight attendant? Do you have opinions about how much you're paid? Contact this reporter at mmatousek@businessinsider.com.

Don't pack too much

"Be sure to not pack too much when traveling," a flight attendant for United Airlines said.

Get to the airport early

"Give yourself plenty of time because feeling rushed is just gonna make your travel experience more stressful than it needs to be," the United flight attendant said.

Travel in the morning

"I tell people to travel in the morning," said Kevin Cain, a flight attendant for PSA Airlines. "Evening is when delays throughout the day have built up."

Bring your own entertainment

"Always bring your own entertainment and charging stuff," Cain said. "Sometimes your plane won't have Wi-Fi, so it's always good to download something offline on Netflix or bring an iPad if you have one."

Ask for another cup when being served ice

"Whenever you're being served ice, ask for them to serve it with another cup because the ice scoop is actually not very clean," said a flight attendant for a regional airline that works with United Airlines and American Airlines.

Don't drink hot tea or coffee

"Don't drink the coffee. Don't drink the hot tea. The water is not the best," the regional-airline flight attendant said.

Be over-prepared

"Travel is unpredictable," said a flight attendant for Alaska Airlines. "You never know what's going to happen."

Exactly what to eat and do at the iconic Pike Place Market, according to a Seattle native

Pike Place sign

  • Pike Place Market is one of Seattle's most famous tourist attractions.
  • But even though it's a major tourist hub, there are also many hidden local gems to be found and enjoyed there.
  • From a cheese store where you can watch cheese being made to an indie bookstore where the owner sings to guests, these are the places worth visiting at Pike Place Market.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

When someone asks me what they should do on a trip to Seattle, I always tell them to go to Pike Place Market.

Yes, Pike Place is very touristy. It has been very touristy for a very long time, but it's been home to some of Seattle's most interesting small shops and restaurants for even longer.

As a kid, I often went to Pike Place with my family on weekends. I'd get three flavored honey sticks for a dollar and nibble down the sweet plastic tubes as I browsed stuffed marine animals and colorful hand-knitted shawls.

Over the years, Pike Place has gotten more and more crowded. Shops and stands have come and gone, while some have remained the same. Some have gotten worse.

A major expansion and renovation was completed in 2018, allowing the market to accommodate an ever-growing number of visitors.

Read more: I ate the same meal at Texas Roadhouse, Outback Steakhouse, and LongHorn Steakhouse. Here's how they compared.

Through all these changes, my love for Pike Place has remained constant. Inside its winding, sloping maze of halls, there's always an unusual book or a tasty morsel to discover. Plus, its diversity showcases the history of the immigrants — Russian, Chinese, Turkish, Iranian, among many — that made Seattle the vibrant city it is today.

I'm going to take you on a whirlwind journey of the spots that make Pike Place Market one of my favorite places in the Emerald City.

SEE ALSO: I ate at MOD Pizza, America's fastest-growing restaurant chain, and saw why it's miles ahead of the competition

Enter the market at the Pike Street, but don't go inside.

To your left, there will be a bookstore.

Left Bank Books sells everything from socialist theory to local zines to activist ethnobiology. It's about as leftist as it gets, which means it's a perfect cross-section of Seattle's intellectual culture.

The interior is cozy and charming, with an upper level and a back room.

Even if you don't agree with the politics of the books sold here, you'll get a peek into what Seattle's intelligentsia are reading.

Read more:Popeyes' new chicken sandwich convinced us that we never need to go back to Chick-fil-A

Books are hand-picked by staff, many of whom are volunteers.

Upstairs, there is a reading nook. Take a book and leaf through it on this picturesque window seat, and maybe you'll learn a little about radical feminist theory or the heirloom seed saving movement.

On your way into the market, don't forget to pet the brass pig for luck.

I don't buy fish from Pike Place Fish Co. My family never has, and I'm not sure if people actually do buy from them. We get our fish from Costco. (Also a local market!)

Read more:21 products that prove Costco is a bulk shopper's paradise

But it's worth it to pass by and gawk at the local sea critters on ice. If you come at the right time, you can also catch the famous fish toss.

Head down the hallway to the right and you'll happen upon Sosio's Produce, which has a rich variety of local vegetables, fruit, and fungi.

Admittedly, I only come to Sosio's to see if morels are in season — then my family goes to the mountains and picks them ourselves.

But if you're not a seasoned morel hunter and you'd like a fresh taste of the Pacific Northwest, Sosio's has you covered.

Aside from flowers and the ever-evolving line-up of honey and soap vendors, there isn't too much else of interest in the main hall. Instead, head down the ramp to the lower level. You'll pass a tiny Cantonese restaurant. Skip it.

Across the hallway from the restaurant is Lion Heart Bookstore — my favorite bookstore in all of Seattle. It was closed on the day I visited because the owner, David Ghoddousi, was attending a market council meeting.

This bookstore has been in operation since 1961 and has passed on from caretaker to caretaker. David, who is of Iranian descent, is the fifth caretaker. He welcomes guests with joke and song and personally curates the store's eclectic collection.

I've bought a dual-language book of Arabic poetry here, as well as literary classics by James Joyce and Kurt Vonnegut, among others. David is also often happy to special-order books for customers.

Remember that Cantonese restaurant you skipped earlier? You skipped it because across the street from the main market is Mee Sum Pastry, a Pike Place old-timer that sells some of the best Hong Kong pastries outside of the International District.

Its selection of pastries is a vestige of the earliest iteration of Chinese cuisine in America. Now that Seattle has become popular with mainland Chinese visitors, students, and tech workers, options for authentic Chinese cuisine abound in the area.

My two favorites at this place are the pineapple bun (sold as pineapple bread) and the char siu pork bun. The first is sweet and the second is savory, so they balance each other out perfectly.

Make your way up the east side of Western Avenue to Beecher's Homemade Cheese.

Beecher's cheese is crafted in-store, and you can watch the process through a glass window.

Beecher's sells all kinds of cheese that you can take home with you, including cheddars and cheese curds.

You can even sample some of their specialties.

But the real draw of Beecher's is their mac and cheese, which is some of the best mac I've ever had. Make sure to get a cup to go, or eat at the counter and watch the cheese in your mac being made.

Read more:I tried mac and cheese from 6 chains, and the winner blew away the competition

Next up, stop by French bakery Le Panier for a petit dessert pause.

As with most places in Pike Place, it's hard to find a seat here. But this is a place you should really find time to savor.

Le Panier makes French baked goods that can be hard to find elsewhere. If you're in a rush, you can grab a bag of creamy, melty meringues to take with you.

Their eclairs are close to perfect.

And their classic and creative macarons are also worth a spin.

Read more:I ate apple pies from 5 fast-food chains, and the winning pie blew me away

Next up: my favorite lunch spot in all of Pike Place. Michou Deli is one of the few places left in the city where you can get a filling, delicious lunch for under five bucks.

Seating is limited, though, so be prepared to take your food with you.

Its specialty is sandwiches. You can buy them whole or by the half.

I recommend getting half a sandwich and filling out your meal with a soup, deli salad, or dessert.

Everything at Michou is delicious and affordable, so you can't go wrong. There are also vegan and vegetarian options.

Finally, end your food tour at Piroshky Piroshky, the famous purveyor of the Russian pastry called — you may have guessed — a piroshky.

Be prepared to brave a long line out the door. But once you get into the tiny shop, you'll be rewarded with the scent of fresh-baked pastries.

There are sweet and savory piroshkies as well as other baked goods and pastries.

My personal favorite is the mushroom, onion, and celery piroshky, but the smoked salmon pate piroshky makes great use of a classic Pacific Northwest ingredient. Get out quickly, because the line is long and full of tourists.

Finally, walk to the end of the market and take your haul across the street to Victor Steinbrueck Park, where you'll be treated to an unparalleled view of the Puget Sound.

Take a seat on the grassy lawn, dig in, and stretch your legs. You've earned it.

San Francisco

San Francisco is home to the most expensive rental market in the country

Business Insider's Hillary Hoffower reported in May that the typical rent in San Francisco exceeds $4,500 — which is more than 2.5 times the typical national rent.

Read more: The salary you need to comfortably afford rent for a two-bedroom apartment in the 25 largest US cities, ranked

The city is so outrageously expensive that some people are dishing out $1,200 a month for bunk beds in co-living buildings to save on rent

With the help of the rental platform Zumper, Business Insider was able to track down the tiniest apartment currently for rent in San Francisco. For $2,295 a month, you can rent a 161-square-foot studio in a swanky downtown neighborhood, but you may feel a little cramped.

Business Insider called and emailed the listing agent to find out how long the studio has been on the market but did not immediately receive an answer. A contact at RentSFNow  — the leasing side of Veritas Investments, the company that previously managed the listing — told Business Insider that the building had recently changed ownership and that contact information on the listing had not yet been updated.

Keep reading for a look inside.

DON'T MISS: NYC landlords were caught renting out 'micro rooms' for $600 a month. Here are 7 places in the US where you can legally rent an apartment for that much — or less.

The tiniest apartment for rent in San Francisco is a studio located in Lower Nob Hill. The apartment is within walking distance of the Financial District and North Beach.

The studio spans just 161 square feet and is currently available for $2,295 a month.

Source:Zumper

It includes all the living essentials in one small room — sort of. For one thing, the studio doesn't have a bathroom. The future renter will have to use a shared bathroom.

Source:Zumper

The sink, which can be seen below, is right next to the studio's front door — and the kitchen seems to consist of that, a mini fridge, and not much else.

Source:Zumper

The studio did manage to squeeze in some space for a triangular closet, which is also next to the front door.

Source:Zumper

Beyond that, the studio has one window and a space heater. According to the listing, the unit comes with a dishwasher and in-unit laundry, but we couldn't find them in the listing photos — or, frankly, imagine where they could possibly fit.

$2,295 may seem outrageously expensive for a 161-square-foot studio — and it is. San Francisco is home to the most expensive rental market in the country.

But not all major cities are as wallet-draining as San Francisco. Just consider Raleigh, North Carolina, where the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment is $975 a month.

Meanwhile, if you venture further up the Pacific Coast from San Francisco, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Portland is $1,595 a month.
