Costco food courts are famous for having cheap, yummy grub.

The food court menus are static in terms of price and offerings. You'll have to travel if you want to find any serious discrepancies between Costco food court menus.

They're definitely a good option for shoppers looking to grab a quick, post-shopping spree meal. And some Costco employees are fans too.

"Everything at the food court is a good deal and a favorite of all who stop by to eat," a seasonal Costco employee from New York told Business Insider. "It is a great convenience for everybody, no matter what time of day it is."

Business Insider recently asked a number of Costco employees to share their favorite food court menu options. We also scoured the internet for employee reviews of the food court items on social media.

"I eat at the food court more then I would like too," one Ontario-based Costco employee told Business Insider. "It's so good. The cheapest menus I have ever seen."

Here are the food court menu options Costco employees love:

Pizza was the most popular pick

"Costco's pizzas are pretty incredible considering the price," Costco worker Stefan Winter wrote on Quora. "Crust is yummy, toppings are good quality, what's not to love?"

A total of 2o other Costco employees told Business Insider that the pizza was their favorite food court item. Of those, three employees preferred the pepperoni pizza, while three went with the combo pizza.

"You get sick of the food after awhile, but the combo pizza is always my go-to," one Costco worker in Florida told Business Insider.

"I love the pepperoni pizza," another employee said. "It's very cheesy with nice and juicy crispy pepperonis."

The rest just chose "pizza."

"Fun fact: If you are ordering a whole cheese pizza pie it actually has just over a pound of cheese on it," said one employee who said they ate at the food court on a weekly basis.

The hot dog-and-soda combo was also a hit

"The hot dog soda combo for $1.50 is a classic," one San Diego-based Costco employee told Business Insider.

Two other Costco employees concurred that the hot dog was their favorite food court item. An Oregon-based employee added that it was the best deal in the whole store.

Bratwurst was big with two employees

One Costco employee in Illinois told Business Insider that they liked the bratwurst and felt disappointed when their store got rid of it in favor of chili.

Another worker who's been at Costco for 12 years told Business Insider that, while they didn't often eat at the food court, when they did, they opted for the bratwurst.

Three employees told Business Insider that they liked churros

Three Costco employees who have worked for the warehouse chain for seven and half, eight, and ten years, respectively, told Business Insider that their go-to food court orders typically included a churro.

Costco's various sausage options also had some fans

A Costco employee who's worked at the chain for 29 years told Business Insider they have been snacking on the chain's Polish sausages "since 1989."

Sadly for that employee, Polish sausages have been swapped out in favor of healthier choices.

Another employee said they preferred the Italian sausages.

Two employees enjoyed the food court's relatively new chili

"I love the new chili and the pizza," a Costco employee in Ohio told Business Insider, adding that they ate at the food court "every now and then."

Another California-based employee said that the chili was one of their favorite orders.

Two frozen offerings got a shout out...

"Regardless of what you eat as the 'main course', the pistachio gelato — or any gelato — is to die for," former Costco employee Robert Lu wrote on Quora.

A Washington-based Costco employee who spoke with Business Insider agreed. Another Costco employee said they preferred the food court's frozen yogurt.

... and so did the food court's berry smoothie

Seven Costco employees told Business Insider that they favored the food court's berry smoothies.

One Arizona-based employee said they used to eat at the food court when they were younger and it was "much harder to gain weight." Nowadays, they added that they still "drink the smoothies."

Three employees find the mocha freeze yummy

Three Costco employees said they went for this new addition to the food court menu.

"The new cold brew mocha freeze — yum," said one Costco employee from California.

Variations on the turkey provolone sandwich got a thumbs up

Two employees went for the turkey provolone sandwich — although one employee said they preferred it with pesto and without the turkey.

The chicken bake is one Washington-based employee's go-to

"My favorite food court item is the chicken bake with a cup of Caesar dressing," a Costco employee from Washington told Business Insider. "Most of the time, if you ask for a cup of the dressing, they won't give it to you, but as an employee I tend to be able to get one. It makes it ten times better."

BONUS: You can always skip the food court and grab a free sample at Costco

Costco samples don't actually count as food court items. But, as one Costco employee wrote in a 2013 Reddit AMA, it's always nice to get "free grub" on the job.

The employee noted that the people handing out the samples get "bored standing there all day. Just talk to them and they'll give you plenty."

"Diddy came on and he applied his typical marketing panache and his shock-and-awe salesmanship," Greenburg said. "Within only a few years, Ciroc was number two in the premium vodka category, to only Grey Goose doing about 2 million cases a year."

9. Drake, Virginia Black Whiskey — $40

In a statement, Haig Club said: "This alliance is co-operative at every level and a true hands-on approach in which all partners play a role in everything from business plan development to in-market activation. The partnership is one that generates a real diversity of ideas, bringing a modern twist to a traditional category."

5. Bob Dylan, Heaven's Door Spirits — $50-$80

The Nobel Prize-winning Dylan recently launched a range of whiskies in collaboration with Marc Bushala — the liquor entrepreneur behind Angel's Envy bourbon, which was sold to Bacardi for $125 million.

The Heaven's Door range includes a rye, a seven-year-old bourbon, and a double-barreled whiskey.

3. Kyle Maclachlan, Pursued By Bear Wine — $60

Price source: Pursued by Bear.

Pursed by Bear is a range of wines from the actor and grape-lover MacLachlan, in collaboration with Dunham Cellars in Walla Walla, Washington.

Price source: ReserveBar.

The "Breaking Bad" actors recently announced the launch of Dos Hombres, an "artesanal mezcal" that's designed to be shared.

Paul and Cranston came up with the idea in a New York sushi bar, according to the brand's Instagram account. The pair said they formed a special bond while filming the famous AMC series, and needed a project to stay in each other's company beyond the silver screen.

"We started Dos Hombres to create a Mezcal that we thought was perfect," reads a statement on the website signed by Paul and Cranston. "A unique blend of the finest Espadin agave, hand-selected from the hillsides of a small village in Oaxaca, Mexico."

1. Jay-Z, Armand de Brignac Champagne — $326

Price source: Wine Chateau.

Jay-Z's origin in the liquor industry stems from a feud with Cristal Champagne. When the director of the company that makes Cristal was asked about what he thought of all the rappers drinking their Champagne and including it in their lyrics, he said: "What can we do? We can't forbid people from buying it."

"Jay-Z heard about his comments, he removed it from his 40/40 Club, and more importantly, he started issuing this sort of directive to his fans not to drink it either," Zack O'Malley Greenburg, the author of "3 Kings: Diddy, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z, and Hip-Hop's Multibillion-Dollar Rise," told Business Insider.

"Instead of rapping about Cristal, he put his money where is mouth was, he ended up investing in — and eventually taking over — French Champagne brand called Armand de Brignac, AKA Ace of Spades," Greenburg said.

A man was crushed to death by an elevator in an NYC apartment building. Now, some tenants are reportedly refusing to pay their rents.

Elevator Buttons

In August, a 30-year-old man was crushed to death by an unreliable elevator in his luxury apartment building — the Manhattan Promenade, located in Kips Bay on the titular island's East Side.

The New York Times reported that the elevators in the 23-story residential building had been unpredictable for years. Tenants of the building told The New York Times that, along with other issues, the elevators would "wobble erratically" and stop between floors.

Read more: A man died after an elevator pinned his body between floors. You're still more likely to be killed by a bear or in a bathtub.

According to a report by the New York Post, less than two weeks after the accident, tenants claimed the building's other elevator was still malfunctioning. According to the report, the faulty elevator has prompted some to form a tenants association and start a rent strike. The tenants have been reportedly advised by an attorney to stop paying rent immediately.

"You never think, in a building where I am paying $2,800 for studio, that you could die from the elevator," a tenant told the New York Post.

ATA Enterprises, the property management company that manages the Manhattan Promenade, was ordered to have a staff member on the elevator at all times, forcing tenants to call the lobby when they want to use it.

Despite being told the elevator is safe to ride, tenants say it is still shaky and has skipped floors

"A doorman even accompanied people last week because they were scared and during that journey, it got stuck on a floor and they had to go to another floor to get out," a tenant told the New York Post in late August.

ATA Enterprises did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for a comment.

Issues with New York apartments are part of a troubling trend. Weeks ago, two Manhattan landlords were caught renting out illegal sub-units with no windows, sprinklers, or fire-safety systems. In one of the illegal apartments, the ceilings were reported to be just 4.5 to 6 feet tall.

Fitness has exploded into a nearly $100 billion global industry as more people become obsessed with their health

  • Consumers are engaging with fitness and wellness companies more than ever before, in an attempt to foster community and adapt health-oriented lifestyles.
  • Today the global fitness industry is valued at nearly $100 billion. The International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association found that boutique fitness is the fastest growing brick-and-mortar exercise category — between 2013 and 2017 membership at boutique studios grew by a whopping 121%.
  • Business insider spent the last several weeks trialing some of the most out-of-the-box exercise trends and talking to fitness experts on the future of the industry.

As consumers continue to gravitate toward lifestyles grounded in health and wellness, the fitness industry is cashing in to the tune of nearly $100 billion globally

Today there are more options than ever before to stay fit and get your blood pumping than just hitting the elliptical. Though companies like Peloton are proving market power with its recent public offering, programs like ClassPass have served as a catalyst for both consumers and studio founders alike to test new boutique fitness models, inspiring a smattering of unique classes.

According to the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association, boutique fitness is the fastest growing brick-and-mortar exercise category — between 2013 and 2017 membership at boutique studios grew by a whopping 121%. The IHRSA also found that 40% of health and fitness club members belong to a boutique fitness studio.

Read more: The CEO of exercise-bike startup Peloton says the company 'sells happiness' in pitch to investors

Business Insider reporter Irene Jiang tried some of the most obscure classes and treatments on the scene, including a visit to an "urban sweat lodge," a prison-style workout taught by former convicts, and full-body cryotherapy. Her takeaway? "I'm not sold on the idea of sweating or freezing my way to a better body... but it quickly became clear that what they really had to offer its customers was a sense of community. They also focused on self-improvement and reaching personal fitness goals rather than exercising to attain a certain body type."

Fostering community has increasingly become a selling point for fitness studios and gyms. In turn, consumers are aligning their fitness venues of choice with their personal identities more than ever before. Case in point: The massive outcry against SoulCycle and Equinox after consumers learned of owner Stephen Ross' ties to President Donald Trump.

"At the end of the day, the consumer is not just buying the product. They want to make sure that a company's values align with their own values," Ryan Junk, president of Cycle Bar, told Business Insider's Bethany Biron. I don't think that's a bad thing, personally think it's a great thing because it actually holds business owners and entrepreneurs accountable to more than just profit."

At the same time, gym brands like Planet Fitness and Lifetime Fitness are finding ways to capitalize on the ongoing retail apocalypse — by renting out empty store space in strip malls around the country and opening new locations to accommodate a growing number of memberships. Several of these companies are also profiting from partnerships with food and beverage companies, such as Crunch Fitness which partners with Smoothie King on deals for members.

"Our mission as a company is to inspire people to live a healthy and active lifestyle," Smoothie King's chief marketing officer, Rebecca Miller, told Business Insider's Kate Taylor.

With all of this in mind, Business Insider is sharing a series of stories on these topics and more this week.

'Why is my Uber account disabled?': A guide to Uber account deactivation, and how you might get your account back

0
0

Uber

  • If your Uber account is disabled, it may be because you violated one or more of Uber's community guidelines.
  • Violations of Uber's community guidelines and non-discrimination policies can result in permanent account deactivation.
  • In some cases, deactivations can be reversed by taking improvement courses, appealing to Uber, or updating out-of-date personal information.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

One of Uber's most mysterious and frustrating processes is how it will sometimes disable the accounts of both riders and drivers.

It's sometimes difficult to figure out why an account has been disabled, or how to reactivate it again. But there are a few common reasons why an account might be deactivated.

Why an Uber account may be disabled

Whether for a driver or a rider, a violation of Uber's community guidelines can result in the temporary or permanent deactivation of your account.

On its community guidelines page, Uber writes that "Not following any of our guidelines may result in the loss of access to your Uber accounts. This may include certain actions you may take outside of the app, if we determine that those actions threaten the safety of the Uber community, or cause harm to Uber's brand, reputation, or business."

uber phone car app

But what exactly are these "certain actions," and how do you avoid them? It takes a little extra digging to figure that out, but in the end, deactivation usually boils down to violating three key community standards, and/or failing to meet performance standards.

You can find a full listing of Uber's community guidelines at this link. Below, we'll break down how each main category of Uber's guidelines can relate to account deactivation.

Be respectful

This guideline, labeled "Treat everyone with respect" on Uber's website, spans violations from keeping an untidy car, to discrimination and sexual assault.

Specific offenses under these same categories include rude or threatening behavior about a person's perceived gender, sex, religion or abledness; unwelcome flirtation or come-ons; and unwanted contact through texting, calling, or visiting a rider after the ride is completed.

driver passenger uber lyft rideshare

Be safe

This guideline, labeled "Help keep one another safe" on the company's site, covers a lot of territory, ranging from physical to personal safety.

Offenses that can result in account deactivation include carrying out-of-date vehicle information, disobeying traffic laws, misusing the app through account sharing, and using the app while under the age of 18. Even if the person who orders a ride is over 18, minors are not allowed to ride unaccompanied.

Using video or dashboard cameras to record a ride is permitted — though local laws dictate whether or not a driver must disclose the recording to passengers — but broadcasting a rider's image or audio is against community guidelines.

Follow the law

Another serious offense a rider or driver can make is violating local or federal laws. Many of these laws are also covered by Uber's previously mentioned guidelines as well.

For example, adhering to appropriate car seat use might also be considered a safety violation, and refusing to provide a ride to a service animal may also be considered discrimination.

Other violations of this type include possession of firearms in the car, using drugs or alcohol in the vehicle, or any kind of fraudulent activity, such as falsifying one's identity, manipulating trip length and fee, or creating dummy accounts.

Low ratings and high cancellations

Finally, drivers can have their account deactivated due to low star ratings, or high cancellation rates.

Star ratings are determined by riders based on the quality of their Uber trip, and cancellation rates are calculated by comparing the total number of trips accepted by a driver, versus the total number of trips they cancel.

Uber rider waiting for ride

On its website, Uber writes that the minimum average star rating and maximum number of cancellations will vary from city-to-city, but that drivers will be alerted when their numbers begin to go above or below these thresholds.

However, if these warnings are ignored, the driver can have their account deactivated.

How to reactivate your Uber account

According to Uber's website, drivers with a low star rating who have their accounts deactivated can continue working on the platform again after "provid[ing] proof of the steps you've taken to improve, for example by taking one of the quality improvement courses."

A course advertised by Uber, and offered by third-party company 7x7 Experience, offers courses across the US and Canada online or in-person for a $49 fee. Following the completion of the course, 7x7 Experience writes that they "will send your course completion and certificate to Uber to get [you] re-activated."

As for more serious offenses, Uber writes that users may take it up with the company to refute a deactivation, but that "any behavior involving violence, sexual misconduct, harassment, discrimination, or illegal activity while using the Uber apps can result in the immediate loss of access to the Uber apps."

While some of Uber's guidelines for deactivation are open to interpretation, a good rule of thumb for riders and drivers alike is to always be kind, respectful, and safe when using the app, and to keep personal information up-to-date.

iphone apple store

  • You can use Guided Access to limit your iPhone to only running a single, specific app.
  • Guided Access is useful for lending your phone to kids or using an iPhone at a kiosk in a business setting.
  • Before you can use Guided Access on an iPhone, you need to enable and configure it in Settings.
  • Once enabled, you can use Guided Access by starting the app you want to use and then triple-clicking the Home button (or Side button on certain models).
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Guided Access is a little-known iPhone feature that lets you limit use to a single app of your choice.

It's great for parents who want to make sure their kids only have access to a specific game or app, but it can also be a fast and easy way for a business to set up an iPhone or iPad as a single-app device at a kiosk or welcome desk.

After you turn on Guided Access, you need to set up a passcode (or turn on Touch ID or Face ID), which keeps users from leaving the designated Guided Access app. You can also set up a time limit for the app, after which the phone will go to sleep.

By default, Guided Access will put the phone to sleep after 20 minutes of use. If you prefer, you can set Guided Access to put the phone to sleep using the same timing as Auto-Lock.

For example, if you want the phone to not shut off so the Guided Access app is available all day long, go to the Auto-Lock control in the Settings app and change the lock time to "Never."

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Billionaire Ray Dalio showed up at Burning Man in a tie-dye fur coat and said it was like Woodstock but with 'less good music'

0

Ray Dalio

The hedge-fund billionaire Ray Dalio seems to be enjoying semi-retirement — and living it up at the famous Burning Man festival, which recently wrapped up.

While some billionaires don't mind the occasional outlandish outfit — think Richard Branson cross-dressing or Jeff Bezos doing his best Dwayne Johnson impression — Dalio usually sticks to a blue or gray suit, sometimes without a tie. But the Bridgewater Associates founder decided to go all out for his trip to Burning Man, the annual nine-day music and arts festival in Nevada's Black Rock Desert.

On Monday, Dalio tweeted a photo of himself at Burning Man sporting tie-dye from head to toe: bell-bottoms, a shirt, and a coat with blue fur fringe.

In the tweet, Dalio, 70, said Burning Man was like Woodstock but "with better art (installations) and less good music." Dalio also noted that the best time to enjoy the festivities was between 1 and 5 a.m.

Dalio is pictured with Jeff Taylor, a senior executive at Bridgewater Associates who founded the job site Monster.

Burning Man was a small gathering when it was founded in 1986 and now attracts about 70,000 people each year. But ultra-wealthy people like Dalio have been criticized for attending the counterculture festival. Dalio's tweet, for example, was met with criticism and trolling from Twitter users. One tweet said that because of the rich and famous attending, Burning Man's "allure has been completely fabricated."

Dalio may not be known for his fashion sense, but he is known for his unusual management style. Since founding his hedge fund, Bridgewater Associates, in 1975, Dalio has used what he calls "radical transparency" to run his company. At Bridgewater, almost all meetings are recorded, and employees can rate one another during meetings using iPads.

He's credited those management techniques with helping transform Bridgewater from a one-man operation to a hedge fund with $150 billion in assets under management.

In recent years, however, Dalio has taken a step back from management, now serving as the hedge fund's co-chief investment officer. And as Dalio's tweet shows, he's enjoying his free time.

Dalio's fur coat may look garish in the real world, but at Burning Man he would have fit in perfectly. Part of the reason the festival is so popular is that attendees can wear anything they want. Burners, as they're known, wear everything from feathers and wigs to bikinis. In many cases, clothing is optional.

Burning Man isn't the only time Dalio has dressed up (or down) for a party. In 1976, he wore short shorts to Rio de Janeiro's Carnival.

An out of office message is an essential tool for anyone who sends and receives a lot of email, since you can use it to keep contacts informed if you're unable to reply to messages, whether it's just for an afternoon or for a weeklong vacation.

Unfortunately, support for out of office messages is spotty on the iPhone. The default Mail app only allows you to set up automated responses for Microsoft Exchange email accounts.

If you use Gmail on your iPhone, you can set up out of office responses in the Gmail app. And if you use the Outlook app, you have slightly more options, as it supports out of office messages for Exchange, Office 365, and Outlook.com accounts.

How to contact LinkedIn customer support through its online help center and forum

LinkedIn App computer

  • To contact LinkedIn customer support, you'll have to go through their online Help Center, as the company doesn't offer direct contact with a customer support team by phone.
  • LinkedIn has several phone numbers you can call, but all you'll be met with are recordings that direct you to the Help Center, or tell you where the company campus is located.
  • For issues not addressed in LinkedIn's Help Center, you can ask original questions to other users via the LinkedIn Help Forum.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

As with so many large companies these days, LinkedIn doesn't make it easy for you to get in touch with their team directly.

And that's understandable, given that there are more than half a billion people using LinkedIn, and more than 260 million of them do so on a regular basis — their customer support team would be absolutely overwhelmed.

So while you can call LinkedIn's various phone numbers (two of which are 650-687-3600 and 650-687-3555), don't expect anything more than a recording either giving you the company's physical address, or else directing you to their preferred method of customer service, the LinkedIn Help Homepage.

How to get LinkedIn customer support through the Help Center

First, make sure you're signed into your LinkedIn account. Then…

1. From the LinkedIn homepage, click on your picture and the word "Me" in the top right corner of the screen, then click "Open Quick Help" in the dropdown menu.

Screen Shot 2019 09 03 at 10.03.02 AM

2. Now click "Go to Help Homepage" on the next menu.

3. At the top of the page is a search bar. Type in keywords related to your issue ("lost password" e.g.) into the search bar, or else browse among the featured topics in the left-hand column, or in the central "Suggested for you" space.

Screen_Shot_2019 09 03_at_11_55_10_AM

If you're having trouble finding the answer to your issue in LinkedIn's Help Center, scroll to the bottom of the Help Homepage and click on the "LinkedIn Help Forum" link, under "Help Forum."

Using the Help Forum, you can browse past questions that have been answered by other users. Better yet, you can click "Start a new Forum discussion" in the right panel, and ask your own original question.

In most cases, a knowledgeable LinkedIn user or moderator will be able to help.

Why online-meat-delivery startups and imitation-meat brands are simultaneously thriving in today's food world

0
0

beyond meat

  • Though national meat consumption is still high, plant-based meat substitutes like Beyond Meat and vegan meal delivery services are becoming more popular.
  • They provide delicious options that can rival the taste and texture of real meat, but don't carry the same environmental and ethical weight.
  • Direct-to-consumer meat delivery companies such as online butcher shop Porter Road take an alternative angle and are equally popular. They say you can continue eating meat, particularly the more sustainable, transparently produced kind.
  • Vegan and specialty meat companies are simultaneously thriving in a rapidly changing food industry by molding their businesses to reflect the customer concerns that are contributing to such change.

Americans love their beef. According to a report by the USDA, 2019 beef production is expected to reach 27.2 billion pounds, serving all the hungry diners who can't wait to watch a thinly sliced piece of brisket crisp up on the grill, cut into a tender medallion of steak, or bite into a juicy burger.

However, the classic love story between consumers and meat is changing, rewritten and challenged by the entrance and growing popularity of vegan food companies. People are paying more attention to nutrition, as well as how their daily behavior — from what they eat to how they dress— affects the health of the planet.

It can be easy to view the conflict as a simple matter of meat eaters versus plant eaters, but the reality of this tension is more complex and provides fascinating hints at the future of food.

The riches of plant potential

Beyond Meat, a plant-based "meat" available in more than 30,000 locations, including supermarkets like Safeway and Whole Foods and fast food chains like Carl's, Jr., was created in 2009. By the time of its IPO in May 2019, it was valued at $1.5 billion.

beyond meat 2

Beyond Meat is for the new generation of meat eaters. Today, it's more likely that meat eaters, rather than quit cold turkey and become full-time vegetarians and vegans, employ a balanced approach by choosing more plant-based options when possible. As these options become less expensive and more flavorful, the shift to a majority plant-based diet is getting easier.

Beyond Meat's VP of Marketing Will Schafer says, "Most consumers seeking plant-based options don't have an aversion to meat per se, but rather the health, environmental, and animal welfare baggage that comes with it. By making meat directly from plants, we can have a positive impact in these three areas, thus enabling consumers to have their burger and eat it, too."

The company says its burger patty requires 99% less water, 93% less land, nearly 50% less energy, and 90% fewer greenhouse gas emissions to produce than a traditional beef burger. So it definitely provides some environmental relief, but skeptics of Beyond Meat and close competitor Impossible Foods still want to know: is it as satisfying to eat as real meat?

Both do look, cook, and taste like meat. To attain this challenging feat, Beyond Meat studied the molecular structure of beef, breaking it down into four main building blocks: protein, fat, trace minerals, and water. It then went out into the plant world to find these building blocks and "rebuild meat from the ground up," without sacrificing taste or texture. Beyond Meat's ingredient list includes pea protein isolate, rice protein, mung bean protein, potato starch, and beet juice extract. Its products (burgers, sausages, ground beef), are also free of GMOs, soy, and gluten.

daily harvest

Other companies easing consumers into a diet with more vegetables are doing so with the promise of flavor, color, and convenience. Their food products may not contain meat, but the startups, many of which are choosing meal delivery as their attack strategy, are hoping that they'll be so delicious you'll forget about the absence of meat.

Veestro and Sakara Life put you on organic, 100% plant-based meal plans, and the best part is that the meals are ready to eat. If you lead an active lifestyle and want food to support your fitness goals, you can try Kettlebell Kitchen. Meanwhile, Splendid Spoon and Daily Harvest focus on smoothies and bowls. Clearly, shoppers have the privilege of choice when it comes to how they want to incorporate more plants into their diets.

Butcher shop beef, meet the internet

Even as plant-based meat substitutes and plant-centric food brands flood the market, online-meat-delivery businesses are, somewhat surprisingly, thriving.

Brands like Snake River Farms and ButcherBox ship out dry ice-packed boxes of gourmet, high-quality beef (and pork and chicken) to doorsteps, but they're more than a convenient way to get your month's supply of meat. They emphasize that they use sustainable and humane practices throughout the animal life-cycle, such as giving cattle room to roam, allowing them to eat nutritious, natural diets, and abstaining from the use of antibiotics and added hormones. Their approach to the evolving food system is to sell consumers a more responsible type of meat.

These online-meat-delivery startups appeal to conscious consumers who don't just eat meat blindly. They read labels and care about where their food came from and how it was produced. James Peisker, cofounder of Porter Road, says that many of his customers once got their meat from local sources that had been pushed out by big box stores and the commodity industry, while others "have taken a hard look behind the curtain of the commodity meat industry (the animal conditions, the extreme use of hormones and antibiotics) and opted out of eating meat until they found Porter Road."

porter road

The company has experienced 150% growth year over year, and that's without worrying too much about its position in relation to Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods. Peisker believes "the buzz around Beyond Meat and Impossible shows that consumers are demanding alternatives to commodity meat — we are all in the same market with very different approaches."

He paints the scale, explaining that, "On one extreme, you have the commodity meat industry with its abundant problems, and on the other, faux meat. Porter Road sits between these two extremes by providing real meat grown by real farmers in a way that respects the animals, the environment, and produces a superior product."

Can meat and plants co-exist in our food system?

When I asked Beyond Meat and Porter Road their opinions about the future of food, both brought sustainability into the conversation. Peisker says, "People should absolutely be concerned about their diet's environmental impact. Our simple rule of thumb is to eat less, but better meat." Schafer says, "Demand for meat is growing, but creating it by running plant matter through an animal is inefficient and unsustainable," effectively branding all forms of "real" meat consumption as somewhat problematic.

There will always be a diversity of ways we obtain and consume food, but it wouldn't be too far-fetched to say our relationship to meat has become, and will continue to become, more careful and considerate. While plant-based options still pale in comparison to national meat consumption, we're seeing changes in attitudes towards and behaviors surrounding meat consumption.

NYC luxury real estate just had its slowest month in 6 years. Some developers are chopping up multimillion dollar penthouses into multiple smaller apartments to get them off the market.

100 Barclays Penthouse

The prospect of a July 1 tax hike prompted a boom in luxury condo sales in New York City in June 2019, The Wall Street Journal reported.

But the surge of high-end sales didn't last. In July, sales of Manhattan homes priced at $2 million or above dropped to their lowest levels in more than six years, according to the Journal.

New York City has more super-expensive and ultra-luxurious penthouse apartments than it knows what to do with.

In Manhattan, there are currently more than 50 penthouses on the market for $20 million or above, according to StreetEasy.

Many of these penthouses sit on the market for months or years and eventually get significant price chops.

"Like any commodity, when the market is saturated with them, their value declines," Jason Haber, an agent at Warburg Realty in Manhattan, told Business Insider. "If under every rock you found a diamond, diamonds would decline in value. That's what is happening right now."

Readmore: A SoHo triplex penthouse got a $5.5 million price chop, but it could still break the record for the most expensive apartment ever sold in downtown NYC

Other sellers offer wild perks to sell their extravagant penthouses, such as the $85 million Hell's Kitchen condo that comes with tickets to outer space and a couple of Rolls Royce luxury cars.

Developers are breaking up massive penthouses to get them off the market.

But sometimes discounts and perks are still not enough, and with the traditional penthouse losing its allure for many buyers, developers are carving up penthouses into multiple cheaper listings to get them off the market.

432 park ave nyc

At 432 Park Avenue, New York City's tallest completed residential building, the 95th-floor penthouse was originally listed for $82 million for the full floor, but it sat on the market for more than two years. In late 2018, the condo was split into two separate listings — penthouse 95A for $41.25 million and penthouse 95B for $40.75 million, as Curbed reported. One faces north and one faces south, but the layouts aren't much different.

Just a few blocks away at 520 Park Avenue, developers split a 12,398-square-foot triplex penthouse, first listed in 2014 for a staggering $130 million, into two separate units: One simplex listed for $40 million and one duplex penthouse asking between $80 million and $100 million, according to The Real Deal.

The Real Deal pointed to this as part of a trend of "developers opting to split once-massive penthouses into two or more smaller units."

Splitting huge penthouses into smaller apartments often gets them off the market.

If past sales are any indication, this strategy might be a good one.

A few months after being split into two separate listings, the $82 million penthouse at 432 Park Avenue finally sold as two apartments: for $30.7 million and $30.2 million respectively.

And back in 2016, a 12,000-square-foot, $80 million penthouse at 160 Leroy Street in the West Village was split into two smaller units: One asking $31.5 million and the other $48.5 million, according to Curbed. And it worked — the cheaper one sold in 2017 and Michael Rubin, part owner of Philadelphia's 76ers and the New Jersey Devils, bought the larger unit in 2018 for $43.5 million, Forbes reported.

That being said, the penthouse has not entirely lost its appeal, or its status, in 2019. Ken Griffin's $238 million purchase of the penthouse (floors 50 through 53) at 220 Central Park South shattered the US real-estate record in the first weeks of January. The record had previously been held by Barry Rosenstein's $137 million Hamptons home purchase in 2014.

'What is my LinkedIn URL?': How to find your LinkedIn URL or change it to a custom address

linkedin

LinkedIn is a fantastic resource for professionals to connect with colleagues, business associates, and potential employers.

The site basically allows you to create a publicly accessible resume that highlights your best work, and it can help expedite your job search and career.

But how do you share your profile with other LinkedIn users, or people you're not connected to on the site but would like to be?

Thankfully, LinkedIn makes it easy to find out your unique profile URL, in order to share it with other people, include it in job applications, or for any other reason you might want or need it.

Finding your LinkedIn URL takes only a few seconds and can be done via your profile page with just a couple of clicks. Here's how.

How to find your LinkedIn URL

1. Go to https://www.linkedin.com and log in with your username and password.

2. In the toolbar running across the top of your home screen, click the "Me" button which appears with your profile photo to open a dropdown menu of options.

3. Click "View Profile" to go to your profile page.

4. Once your profile loads, look at your URL bar. The URL there is your LinkedIn URL.

All LinkedIn URLs begin with https://www.linkedin.com/in/— and what comes after that is your unique username.

However, you can customize your URL to be whatever you'd like it to be. Here's how.

How to change your LinkedIn URL

1. On the right-hand side of your profile page, click on "Edit public profile & URL." This will launch a new tab.

Screenshot 1

2. Again looking to the right-hand side of your screen, under "Edit your custom URL," take note of the URL provided there. This is the current URL address of your LinkedIn profile page.

3. Under Edit your custom URL, click the small icon that looks like a pen to the right of your LinkedIn profile URL.

4. Type the URL you'd like LinkedIn to use in the box, and click "Save" to save your changes. LinkedIn will alert you if your selected handle is not available, or if you need to choose a new one. When your new URL is confirmed, LinkedIn will display a message saying so.

The iPhone's camera has a burst mode that mimics the rapid-fire exposures taken by sports and action photographers with high-end cameras.

The iPhone can take about 10 frames per second, which is often enough to capture great moments during fast action like sporting events,  moving vehicles, or animals in motion.

To take a series of photos in burst mode, you don't need to do anything in advance – there's no setting or mode to change. Instead, just tap and hold your finger on the shutter release button. You'll capture a burst of photos as long as your finger remains on the button.

After you take a burst mode photo, it will appear in your camera roll like any other photo – though the iPhone will choose one image to represent it, and "hide" the others. You can review the entire series at any time and save them all or choose one or more of your favorite photos and delete the rest.

Here's how to do it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone Xs (From $999.99 at Best Buy)

How to view burst photos on an iPhone

1. Start the Photos app.

2. Tap "Albums" at the bottom of the screen.

3. Scroll down and tap "Bursts" to open the Bursts folder.

burst 1

4. Tap the photo you want to review, and then tap "Select…" at the bottom of the screen.

burst 2

5. You should now see thumbnails of all the photos at the bottom of the screen. You can swipe through the series, reviewing each image.

6. Tap each photo that you want to save as an individual image to your camera roll. You should see a check mark appear in the lower right corner of each selected image.

burst 3

7. When you're finished, tap "Done."

8. In the pop-up window, you can choose whether you want to keep the entire burst series, or only the favorites you selected. If you choose to keep everything, you can always return to the burst folder and review the photos again. Otherwise, the burst series will be deleted, and only the selected photos will be saved.

  • We spoke with Sarah Gelman, editorial director of Amazon Books, about the top 10 picks and why they made it onto the list.

When it comes to finding a great read, I like to ask around — friends, family, and coworkers, all bookworms alike, are great resources for recommendations. If you're looking for another great resource for finding book recommendations, check out Amazon's book section. Amazon has a whole team of editors whose job is to read all of the great, new content that gets published each year.

Each month, Amazon's editors curate a best new books of the month list where they share their favorite reads of the moment. At the end of the year, they tackle the best books of the whole year. "City of Girls" by Elizabeth Gilbert

Get it here >>

It's the 1940s and the frivolous and fun-loving Vivian Morris arrives in New York with the goal of "becoming someone interesting" (and in short order she is, but for all the wrong reasons). The latest novel by the author of "Eat, Pray, Love" is bawdy, big-hearted, and wise.

Gelman says: This was a unanimous pick across the team. Readers know Elizabeth Gilbert from "Eat, Pray, Love" and she's not as well known as a novelist, but she deserves to be. It's just a fun book — it's been described as a champagne cocktail of a book. Everyone read this book and just felt a breath of fresh air.

"The Silent Patient" by Alex Michaelides

Get it here >>

While it's only halfway through the year, this debut thriller with the twistiest of endings may be the thriller of 2019.

Gelman says: The team got to read this book early on and one of our editors predicted this would be the debut literary thriller of the year. It's a fun, twisty read with a surprise at the end.

"Once More We Saw Stars" by Jayson Greene

Get it here >>

In the face of unimaginable tragedy, they say the only way out is through. That's exactly what Greene learns when his daughter dies from a freak accident. This emotional memoir shines a beacon of light in the darkest of places.

Gelman says: This book— which details the author losing his 2-year-old daughter in a freak accident— which helps put words to grief, will help you face tragedy.

"Mrs. Everything" by Jennifer Weiner

Get it here >>

Sweeping in its personal and political scope, this tale of two sisters is a multi-layered and very moving story for the #MeToo era, one that traces how far women have come, and how far we have yet to go. Weiner's most ambitious novel yet.

Gelman says: Jennifer Weiner has been writing books for almost 20 years, and this book is ambitious — deeply researched, personal, and imagining her mother's life from a fictional point of view. I felt proud of her as a reader.

"The Night Tiger" by Yangsze Choo

Get it here >>

Supple and powerful, like the predator that stalks the shadows of Choo's ensnaring tale, this historical novel set in 1930s Malaysia swirls around a strong-minded apprentice dressmaker and a young houseboy whose destinies collide as they both search for a very unlucky mummified human finger.

Gelman says: A gripping historical novel —"The Night Tiger" will win over readers who love to be captured by a great story.

"Daisy Jones & The Six" by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Get it here >>

Presented as a series of interviews, this novel about a young, captivating singer who came of age in the late '60s/early '70s will leave you thinking that "Daisy Jones & The Six" really existed.

Gelman says: You'll forget that this is about a fictitious band while reading it. My husband who isn't a reader read this and loved it.

"Underland" by Robert Macfarlane

Get it here >>

A one-of-a-kind book, "Underland" explores the universe beneath our feet, diving into catacombs, caves, and the land under Greenland's shrinking ice cap to delve into the darker recesses of our imaginations — a place where artists, adventurers, and criminals have traveled, willingly and otherwise.

Gelman says: The author did all of his research for this on his own. It's a richly rewarding exploration of the world beneath our feet.

"The Unwinding of the Miracle" by Julie Yip-Williams

Get it here >>

Julie Yip-Williams' beautiful memoir speaks to one of our greatest fears, that we would be diagnosed with a terminal disease, and to our greatest hope, which is that we could face life straight on, fully, without squinting, and live each day with honesty, ambition, and true feeling.

Gelman says: This book deals with how to come to terms with one of our greatest fears, dying before we're ready.

"Save Me the Plums" by Ruth Reichl

Get it here >>

"Save Me the Plums" chronicles how food writer Ruth Reichl came to be editor-in-chief of the magazine she'd pored over as a child, how she transformed it from a stuffy relic of the old guard into a publication that embraced a new culinary era, and how "Gourmet" magazine met its end. A memoir to savor.

Gelman says: A fun, insider look at life during the magazine era. And, while I don't think this is her intention, you'll walk away realizing how remarkable of a woman Ruth Reichl is.

"Cari Mora" by Thomas Harris

Get it here >>

Thomas Harris' harrowing new novel of greed and survival, "Cari Mora" is as cinematic as one might expect (and hope for), charged with smugglers and lawmen, gruesome deaths, and deceit that crisscrosses the ocean between Colombia and Miami. Harris is a masterful storyteller who knows exactly how to get under our skin and into our heads.

Gelman says: Harris is the author of "Silence of the Lambs." This thriller has some gruesome spots. And the editor that loved it read this one twice!

And, the top pick in children's books: "The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise" by Dan Gemeinhart

Get it here >>

An unforgettable middle-grade novel about a girl and her father on a cross-country journey, the people they meet, and how they find their way home again.  This is a book young readers won't want to miss. Coyote's story is wise, funny, and holds onto your heart long after you've read the final page.

Gelman says: Full of life lessons, this is the book you want every 9-12 year old to read.

30 photos of Princess Diana that show the lasting impact she had on our world

Princess Diana

  • Princess Diana was a teacher before marrying Prince Charles.
  • After divorcing Charles, Diana became a world famous advocate for different causes, like better treatment for AIDS and HIV patients.
  • Her sons Prince William and Prince Harry remember her as a loving and "informal" mother.
  • Visit Business Insider's home page for more stories.

Princess Diana tragically died at the age of 36 over 20 years ago, in 1997.

She was first propelled into the national spotlight at the age of 20, when she wedded Great Britain's Prince Charles at the age of 20.

Their troubled marriage ultimately imploded, turning the couple in tabloid fodder.

However, Diana went on to become an international icon in her own right. Her sophisticated style dictated fashion trends. Her dedication to charitable causes won her admiration and accolades.

And, in the wake of her death in Paris, then-UK Prime Minister Tony Blair famously referred to her as "the people's princess." The mass, global outpouring of grief that her death sparked proved it an apt observation.

Here's a look at the life of Diana, Princess of Wales:

In school, the future princess failed all her O-levels — twice. However, Diana had a sense that she was destined for something important. "I knew that something profound was coming my way," she said in the documentary "Diana: In Her Own Words." "I was just treading water, waiting for it."

Before her marriage, Diana reportedly shared a flat with three roommates and worked as a part-time kindergarten teacher in London’s Pimlico district.

She first met Prince Charles in 1977 when she was 16. The prince was dating her older sister at the time. Their romance didn't begin until three years later when Diana watched Charles play polo at Balmoral Castle.

Reports indicate that the 32-year-old Charles was under pressure to marry at the time. The prince proposed to Diana in February 1981, after only a few dates. She accepted straight away. In total, Charles and Diana only met 13 times before they were married.

Their lavish, fairytale wedding ceremony received plenty of attention from the press and the public — 750 million people around the world tuned in to watch. CBS reported that the total cost of the wedding was close to $70 million in today's dollars.

However, Diana would later describe her wedding day as "the worst day of my life," according to Brides.com.

The subsequent honeymoon on Royal Yacht Britannia provided Diana with a chance to "catch up on sleep," according to Vanity Fair. Upon returning home, the newlyweds moved into London's Kensington Palace and Tetbury's Highgrove House.

Diana grew used to accompanying Charles on official visits around the world, although she reportedly expressed hope privately that "we won't have to do any more traveling this year" in 1983. However, she quickly became a popular international figure. On her 1985 trip to the US, she turned heads by dancing with John Travolta in the White House.

But all was not well in the royal marriage, which had been on the rocks from the start. The prince and princess both reportedly engaged in extra-marital affairs.

Charles is said to have continued seeing his current wife Camille Parker-Bowles, who he had been in a relationship with before his marriage to Diana. Diana would later quip, "There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded."

The couple formally separated in 1992. Diana ultimately went public about the breakdown of their relationship, speaking candidly about her husband's alleged infidelity and her own struggles with bulimia, depression, and self-harm. Their divorce was finalized in 1996.

In her personal life, Diana found love again with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan in 1995. However, the couple broke up in 1997. That year, Diana began dating Dodi Fayed, the son of an Egyptian billionaire.

While fleeing the ever-present paparazzi, Diana, along with Fayed and driver Henri Paul, was killed in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997.

Her sudden death swept the UK up in a massive display of collective grief and mourning.

Today, Diana is still remembered for her drive to help others. She once recommended that people should "carry out a random act of kindness with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you."

How to upload your resume on LinkedIn and display it on your profile

LinkedIn update

  • To upload a resume on LinkedIn, you have two options: Auto-generate a PDF using the information included on your profile, or upload a customized resume that you created yourself.
  • Uploading a resume to the "About" section of your LinkedIn profile is a relatively simple process, and as long as you know where your resume is on your computer, you should be able to get it uploaded in just a few minutes.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

LinkedIn can be a really useful tool when it comes to getting your name out there and in front of the right people. It can also help you when it comes to applying for jobs and responding to listings featured on the site.

And in order to take full advantage of these features, it's a good idea to have a resume uploaded to your profile.

If you don't have a resume ready, you could use LinkedIn's download feature, which takes all of the information you've included on your profile and converts it into a PDF resume. To do this, go to your profile page, click the "More" button then select "save to PDF."

But that downloaded resume is likely not as aesthetically pleasing as a resume you created yourself, and it will likely be longer than you want.

So uploading a customized resume to your profile is usually the better option. Plus, it's always a good idea to tailor the information included in your resume to better fit the job you're applying for. That way, you'll stand out in the right ways.
