Nordstrom's new 'Sustainable Style' section of its website helps customers shop for responsibly produced clothes, home goods, and beauty products

  • Nordstrom just launched Sustainable Style— an online shopping category that consists entirely of responsibly-made products. The featured items are sustainably sourced, manufactured in factories that meet higher social or environmental standards, and/or give back.
  • It's a first for US-based fashion retailer of this size and comes on the heels of Nordstrom committing to the G7 Fashion Pact alongside 30+ global luxury retailers to combat the global climate crisis.
  • The shopping category includes more than 2,000 items from 90 brands such as Nordstrom-made Treasure & Bond, Patagonia, Reformation, Eileen Fisher, S'well, Toms, Veja, and Caudalie.

Nordstrom just launched Sustainable Style— an online shopping category of only sustainable options — to make it easier to find luxury products that align with your values.

Customers can shop by gender and product category as well as narrow the collection by certain priorities: Gives Back, Responsibly Manufactured, and Sustainably Sourced. If you're most concerned with the environment or human rights and fair trade, you can shop that way with the click of a button. Rather than placing responsibility on the shopper to do the legwork, Nordstrom is assuming the role of the curator of high-end, guilt-free options instantly. It's ready-to-wear sustainability.

What brands are included?

Sustainable Style includes 2,000 items from 90 brands, such as Nordstrom-made Treasure & Bond, Patagonia, Reformation, Eileen Fisher, S'well, Toms, Veja, and Caudalie. In other words, it looks like any collection of products you'd find — sweaters, running shoes, moisturizers, wedges, purses, zip-ups, denim, dresses, and the like. You'll even find up-and-coming startups like Girlfriend Collective, which makes leggings out of recycled fishing nets and plastic bottles

The details of what each category means

Products tagged as "sustainably sourced" are made with at least 50% sustainably sourced materials (think: organic cotton, recycled polyester, and materials with eco-certifications like Bluesign and Fair Trade Certified).

"Responsibly manufactured" items come from factories that "better protect their employees and our planet through offering empowerment programs to workers, ensuring fair wages, and managing chemicals and resource use," according to the website.

"Give-back" items mean a portion of the proceeds benefits people, animals, or the planet through charitable giving.

To learn more about the standards the company is using, familiarize yourself with the glossary of terms here— or don't. You can engage as much as you want (emailing in to make the case against including big names like Topshop) or enjoy the pre-chosen selection and move on with your life.

Other sustainability efforts Nordstrom is making

Sustainable Style coincides with Nordstrom's commitment to the G7 Fashion Pact, a new coalition of 32 global luxury retailers working to address the global climate crisis that was announced in late August, 2019 in France by President Emmanuel Macron. The pact serves as a necessary mission statement for a global industry intrinsically linked to complex sustainability issues and consumption. It's also a first for US-based multiline fashion retailers. This move is linked to both immediacy of the issue and the growing market opportunity presented by empowered consumers armed by social media and the Information Age.

It's worth stating that while sustainable initiatives in retail are critical, the most sustainable option is often to not buy anything new. But, there are products made to extend the life of things you already own (a possible expansion of the category in the future), and, at some point, you'll probably need new things. The Sustainable Style shop is there, ideally, to make sure that when you do need them, it's easier to make a responsible choice — without sacrificing anything else, or even leaving the department store ecosystem.

As is true on a much greater scale, sustainability is a nuanced and complex conversation. Nordstrom is responding to customer interest, and while these categories are a first stab at its implementation, the company says they will be responsive to customer feedback and evolve the classifications. But, regardless of how it unfolds, Nordstrom is committing itself to the conversation.

How to report a YouTube channel anonymously if you believe it's violating YouTube's community guidelines

0

youtube

  • You can report a YouTube channel anonymously, so you don't have to worry that the user or channel will be able to track the report back to you.
  • You may want to report a YouTube channel if someone is posting offensive or hateful content, but keep in mind it will take time since YouTube needs to review your report and see if the content violates the platform's community guidelines.
  • Here's what you need to know to report a YouTube channel on your computer or mobile device.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

When it comes to the internet, there's a relatively simple idea that a lot of people tend to forget.

To paraphrase Uncle Ben: With great freedom and power, comes great responsibility. When people forget that (just ask any internet troll) and end up posting offensive content, you can report them and hopefully curb their behavior.

On YouTube, reporting is completely anonymous, so you don't have to worry about retaliation from the channel you choose to report. But, at the same time, reporting doesn't have immediate repercussions.

For example, if you want to report a video for inappropriate content, it wouldn't be immediately taken down. Someone has to review it and decide if the content truly goes against YouTube's community guidelines, which are often changing and always under scrutiny.

Though, in some cases, a reported video may get hit with an age restriction to help ensure that it isn't viewed by those who aren't mature enough to see it.

Here's what you'll need to do to report a YouTube channel.

How to report a YouTube channel

This process is exactly the same, whether you're on a computer or using an iPhone or Android

Here's how to do it:

1. Go to youtube.com and sign into your account, if necessary.

2. Go to the page of the channel you want to report.

3. Click on their "About" section.

4. Click the flag icon under the Stats section and select "Report User."

1 HOW TO REPORT YOUTUBE CHANNEL

Alternatively, you can also report the channel art or profile picture of the user from that flagging drop-down.

Or, if more appropriate, you can block specific videos to control what your kids watch, or you can also block certain channels to keep those users from commenting on your videos.

Forget Champagne and infinity pools: High-end travelers today want to make an impact on the places they visit, according to a luxury safari operator

0
0

Wilderness Safaris

  • Luxury travelers in 2019 want more than just Champagne and infinity pools, according to the business director of a luxury safari company.
  • Chris Roche, the business development director at Wilderness Holdings, which owns luxury safari company Wilderness Safaris, told Business Insider that big-ticket travelers in 2019 have high expectations of their travel experiences.
  • They want authenticity, they want to make a positive impact on the places they visit, and they want to be inspired to be better versions of themselves, he said.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Luxury travelers today are no longer satisfied with Champagne, caviar, and infinity pools. In 2019, they're looking for impact, according to the business director of a luxury safari company.

"They want authenticity and genuine engagement, they want to feel like they're a meaningful contributor to all of this, and they want to be inspired," Chris Roche, the managing director for business development at Wilderness Holdings, which owns luxury safari company Wilderness Safaris, told Business Insider.

Wilderness Safaris, which was founded in 1983, operates customizable safaris in seven African countries including Botswana, Kenya, and Rwanda. A typical safari costs about $8,000 per person for a five-night stay, but costs vary by country and type of lodging. The company bills itself as a sustainable ecotourism operator that combines luxury hospitality with conservation.

Wilderness Safaris

According to Roche, the experiences they offer align perfectly with what high-end travelers are looking for today.

Luxury travelers today want authenticity and genuine hospitality instead of formulaic service.

Travelers today want to meet real people, according to Roche.

"They don't want the polished, you know, silver service with some guy wearing a cummerbund and he's got a towel over his arm," he said. "... You want to meet a person, you want to hear about their background, you want to know how they came to work in that space, and where they're going beyond that."

Roche says one of the highlights for guests at Wilderness Safaris is connecting with the staff.

At one of their camps in Rwanda, for example, a couple of guests told Roche about how the camp's bartender, a local who'd never worked in a luxury establishment before, had brought the guests their drinks and then poured himself a drink, sat down on the barstool next to them, and they talked about his life.

"I met them in Kigali afterward and they said, 'That's what made it different. That's what made it real,'" Roche said. "... It's not about service by menu or by rote. It's about genuine hospitality."

Travelers want to have a positive impact on the places they visit.

Overtourism is a growing problem in 2019, with frequent reports of popular destinations being destroyed by the sheer number of visitors and tourists damaging ancient monuments or protected spaces.

Read more:13 places around the world that are being ruined by tourists

Yet according to Roche, luxury travelers in 2019 want to have a meaningful, positive impact on the places they visit and the people there.

Roche recounts the story of Maria, a Rwandan woman who was left widowed after the 1994 genocide. Wilderness Safaris provided her with a sewing machine and hired her to make napkins, tablecloths, staff uniforms, and other textiles for their camp.

Wilderness Safaris

When they hear her story, "guests are almost always moved to say, 'How can we help Maria?'" Roche said. "And so they'll ask the lodge manager. And if the lodge manager's doing their job, they'll say, 'You know, there are a thousand Marias here.'"

Those efforts to give back to the local communities extend further, too: Wilderness Safaris employs locals to work at their camps and lodges; buys fresh produce and other products from local communities; and works on water projects, such as helping provide technology for people to expand their capacity to collect rainwater.

The company also runs conservation camps for children, where they teach them about the environment and health and nutrition.

Wilderness Safaris

And finally, Roche says, people are looking for inspiration in their travels.

"They see this and they say, 'I can do better. I can be a better version of myself,'" Roche said. "And I think people come here and they get inspired to do that."

'How does the Apple Card work?': A guide to using Apple's new credit card and its features

0
0

Apple Card

  • The Apple Card is Apple's new credit card from Goldman Sachs that works with Apple Pay and your iPhone's Wallet app.
  • The Apple Card offers higher-than-average cash back when used with Apple Pay, and has no fees or penalties (aside from ordinary interest charges).
  • If you can't use Apple Pay, you can still swipe the titanium credit card, or generate a highly secure virtual credit card number which can be changed at any time.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The Apple Card is the first credit card offered by Apple, and issued by Goldman Sachs. It's designed to work with the iPhone's Wallet app and Apple Pay.

For those times when you can't pay digitally, you also get a physical card — with your name laser-etched into its titanium surface — that you can carry as well.

Unlike most credit cards, there's no card number or CCV code on the Apple Card. If you need that information, it's stored in your Wallet app. In other words, using this card without an iPhone to go with it is difficult.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone Xs (From $999.99 at Best Buy)

Apple Watch Series 4 (From $499.99 at Best Buy)

The Apple Card's unique features

In many ways, the Apple Card is a straightforward credit card, but it has some unique features that bear mentioning.

The card is primarily designed to be used with your iPhone's Wallet app, and you can pay for products with it using Apple Pay through your iPhone or Apple Watch

apple watch iphone

You'll receive the best rewards if you use the Apple Card with Apple Pay, which include the following:

  • As much as 3% back when making purchases with participating merchants.
  • 3% back on all purchases made directly with Apple (such as at Apple stores or using the App Store).
  • 2% back on all other Apple Pay purchases.

If you use the physical titanium card rather than Apple Pay, you get 1% back.

Rather than waiting 30 days for your rewards to be applied to your account, all rewards are applied daily to your Wallet's Apple Cash account. You can use Apple Cash to make purchases, or to pay your Apple Card balance.

Apple's fee structure is also appealing: There are none.

There is no annual fee for Apple Card, nor is there a late fee. On the Apple Card website, Apple says the card has "no fees. Not even hidden ones," and that includes all the usual fees traditional credit cards tend to charge, like cash advance fees and international purchase fees.

Because the Apple Card is so deeply integrated with the Wallet and Apple Pay, you get a lot of information about each purchase — you can even tap on a purchase in your transaction history to see where the purchase was made on a map.

And when it comes time to pay the bill, a clever interface lets you "dial in" how much of the balance you want to pay, letting you see exactly how much interest and principal you're paying as you select the amount.

How to get Apple Card

There is no online application for Apple Card. To apply, open the Wallet app on your iPhone and then tap the "+" button in the upper right corner. Choose "Apple Card" and complete the form.

apple card wallet

The qualification process only takes a few moments, and you can start using the card with your approved credit limit immediately.

How to pay with your Apple Card

There are three ways you can use your Apple Card: Using the Wallet app and Apple Pay, by swiping the physical card when Apple Pay is not an option, and by giving the merchant your credit card number.

Once you complete the application process, your Apple Card is automatically added to your Wallet app, and you can make purchases with Apple Pay as you would with any other credit card that you've added to your iPhone

Once your physical card arrives, you can also swipe the card at a point of sale terminal. The card doesn't work with contactless terminals, though — if contactless purchases are an option, you should use Apple Pay with your iPhone or Apple Watch instead.

Apple Card

Finally, if you need your card number and CCV code to make a purchase, like if you're buying something by phone, your Apple Card can generate a secure, virtual credit card number for non-Apple Pay purchases.

Here's how to find that number and CCV code:

1. Open the Wallet app.

2. Tap the Apple Card.

3. In the upper right corner, tap the three dots.

4. Tap "Card Information."

5. You should see the card number, expiration date, and CCV code.

6. You can tap "Request New Card Number" at any time if you suspect the current one has been compromised — you'll instantly get a new virtual number without needing to request a new physical card from Apple.

Apple iPhone Safari

  • The iPhone's Safari browser allows you to have many websites open in different tabs, and there's a way to close all the tabs on your iPhone at once.
  • You can close all tabs on your iPhone's Safari app in just one step that takes a few seconds to complete.
  • You will lose all unsaved links or data in all closed Safari tabs, so make sure you're not closing anything important.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

These days, we're glued to our phones. From scrolling through our social media feeds to reading the news, there's not much our devices can't do to hold our attention.

And if you use an iPhone, chances are your Safari web browser has multiple tabs open with different websites you've visited over the past days, weeks, or even months — guilty as charged over here!

If you've lost track of what tabs you have open, and simply want to start from scratch, it's possible to close all open Safari tabs on your iPhone at once. Doing so is quick and easy—here's how.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone Xs (From $999.99 at Best Buy)

How to close all tabs on your iPhone's Safari browser

1. On your iPhone's home screen, tap the Safari icon to open the app.

2. In the lower right-hand corner of your screen, tap the tabs icon, which appears as two overlapping squares.

3. Once the tab carousel appears, press and hold the "Done" option in the lower right corner of the screen for two to three seconds to launch an additional menu.

4. An option will appear to close all tabs. Tap this to close all tabs immediately and return to a blank home screen in Safari, which will display your bookmarked sites as small squares.

From here, you can either choose one of these bookmarks to navigate to, or use the toolbar at the top to type in the URL of the site you wish to visit, or a search term.

It should be noted that unless you've bookmarked the particular tabs you closed, you'll only be able to find them again via your History menu. Any unsaved form data or other submissions in the tabs will also be lost, unless you've saved them.

NOW WATCH: I cleaned my entire apartment with 4 of Amazon's highest-rated cleaning robots, but I could've done a much better job myself

We tried these stretchy boxer briefs for women, and now they're all we want to sleep in

0

Richer Poorer Femme Boxer 2

  • Richer Poorer's feminine spin on men's boxers has resulted in the ultimate lounge garment, the Femme Boxer, which comes in five different colors.
  • The Femme Boxer is made from the same modal cotton blend as the internet famous Classic Bralette that created waitlists thousands of people long.
  • We tried the Femme Boxers and agreed that they were both comfortable and feminine, and perfect for lounging around or wearing under dresses and skirts.

A lot of women's underwear tends to be designed with a, let's say, "minimalistic" eye: thin straps, cheeks exposed, almost transparent material. While I'm not saying that I don't frequently purchase this type of underwear, I definitely wish there were more options available with a bit more coverage, if you know what I mean. And I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way.

Something about walking down the street in a dress and getting caught standing over a subway grate Marilyn-Monroe style just isn't appealing to me. Thankfully, I recently came across Richer Poorer's Femme Boxers ($24), which are basically men's boxer briefs designed for women. They're a full-coverage option, perfect for some hardcore lounging or wearing under loose dresses and skirts.

It wasn't long before I realized that the Femme Boxers were made from the same non-stretch material as their internet famous, bestselling Classic Bralette. Remember the one with the super long waitlist? I even stumbled upon an advertisement describing the material as "butter on your butt."

After hearing my coworker sing praises about the comfort, fit, and durability of the cotton bralette in her review, I reached out to Richer Poorer to see if my team and I could test the Femme Boxer (plus, I was curious what "butter on your butt" felt like).

At first glace, the Femme Boxers look well-made with a wide, flexible elastic band around the waist that sits close to your belly button. The inseam of the legs is clearly long enough to make sure your backside is covered, and it ends with thick, stretchy seams that sit on your upper thigh. To top it off, the front is adorned with decorative snaps to complete the boxer-brief aesthetic, and the printed tag prevents any uncomfortable itching.

While the Femme Boxers don't come in as many colors as the Classic Bralette does, the color options span dark, soft, and rich shades. They are available in black, charcoal, plum, violet, tobacco, and my personal favorite, java (a deep maroon).

After wearing the Femme Boxers, we all agreed that Richer Poorer hits the nail on the head with a style of underwear that is both feminine and comfortable.

Here's what we thought of the Femme Boxers:

Richer Poorer Femme Boxer

Francesca Rea, content producer Insider Picks:

These boxers were more comfortable than I thought they'd be. Like I mentioned above, I always wear spandex shorts over my underwear and under my dresses because I want to feel like I have full coverage when going out and about. I felt comfortable and secure the whole day and didn't feel the need to wear my spandex shorts under my dress.

I even wore these to bed a couple of times with a big T-shirt when the temperatures just wouldn't drop. I was really happy to wake up and see that the material didn't stretch out or get contorted while I tossed and turned for eight hours.

The only thing I'd note is that the Femme Boxers are definitely just for lounging or to wear under very loose clothing. Since the modal cotton blend is fairly thick and the elastic sits pretty high on your waist, it's not realistic to wear under a pair of tight-fitting jeans.

Sally Kaplan, editor Insider Picks:

I love these undies for wearing under dresses and for lounging around the apartment or sleeping. The elastic is soft and pliable so it doesn't dig in whatsoever, and the length is just enough to give me full coverage but not so long that I feel like I'm wearing biker shorts.

I won't be able to wear these under jeans since I prefer a tighter fit, but if you love loose jeans, these will do just fine.

Remi Rosmarin, reporter Insider Picks:

As an amateur to the boxer-brief style of underwear, I was really impressed with this pair from Richer Poorer. Super soft fabric and a stretchy elastic waistband make these comfortable to slip on, whether to keep you covered under a flowy dress or just to lounge on the couch.

The waistband sits softly on your waist — it doesn't dig in at all — and the short length is perfect for wearing under clothing, if you like the way full-coverage underwear feels under dresses and such. Personally, I like wearing underwear that I can't really feel under my clothes, so I've only worn these for lounging and sleeping. But, at least for sleeping (especially in the summer), these are perfect — they're soft, breathable, feminine, and casual, which makes me feel a little more put-together going to bed.

Mara Leighton, reporter Insider Picks:

Like Remi, I was surprised by how much I liked these boxers. I wear them to lounge or sleep in, and would probably wear them under loose dresses during the summer. The material is less stretchy than a pair of something similar from MeUndies, but that's a good thing in this case — they're a bit more substantial and don't feel like they'll stretch out.

The waistband is unobtrusive and soft, and seated relatively high, which is flattering and feels a bit more decidedly femme. The short length is just right, and the mock buttons in front are a really cute addition. It's also a great design choice to have two seams in the back placed on the left and right rather than the center — it's far more comfortable.

How to add a printer to a Windows 10 computer, whether it's wired or wireless

0
0

man printing

While pretty much everything is digital these days, sometimes you just can't beat having paper copies of certain documents. From work contracts to college essays, it's handy to have a printer attached to your home computer in case you need a hard copy of something.

If you recently purchased a printer and need to set it up in Windows 10, or you simply want to add a printer that's already set up, doing so is simple and straightforward.

Many printers have wireless capabilities, and you can set them up through this method, but connecting them with a USB cable will work as well. Here's how to set up both.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Windows 10 (For $139.99 at Best Buy)

How to add a wired printer in Windows 10

1. Connect the printer to your PC by attaching the USB cord to both devices, and ensure the printer is turned on.

2. Open the Settings app by clicking the Windows icon in your toolbar, and beginning to type Settings until the app appears.

3. Open the Settings app and click on "Devices."

screen 1

4. In the Devices menu, click the "Printers & scanners" option on the left-hand side of your screen.

5. Click "Add a Printer or Scanner." This will prompt Windows to begin searching for available devices to set up.

6. Click on the name of the printer you wish to set up and follow the instructions to finish installation. Note that if your selected printer does not show up in the list, click "The printer I want isn't listed." This will launch Windows' troubleshooting feature, which should help you locate the printer you want to set up.

screen 2

How to add a wireless printer in Windows 10

Wireless printers are often advanced enough to automate the installation process. However, you'll still have to start that process, generally through the printer's LCD screen.

Check your printer's instruction manual to determine the exact settings you'll need.

The one piece of information you'll definitely need to set up your wireless printer is your Wi-Fi network name and password. You should make a note of this before beginning the setup, so that you can enter it when prompted by your printer.

Once the printer is set up, you should automatically see it installed in the Windows 10 Settings app, under the Devices menu.

I didn’t believe the hype around the Philips air fryer until I tried it myself — here’s why I’m a convert

0
0

Philips Twin TurboStar Technology XXL Airfryer

  • A high-quality air fryer can be used to make a variety of dishes, cooks food efficiently without heating your house, and is easy to clean.
  • I like the Philips Twin TurboStar XXL Airfryer because it has a spacious interior that holds up to 3 pounds or 4 quarts of food, cooks quickly, and is dishwasher safe.
  • Though it's one of the most expensive air fryers on the market (currently $249.95 on Amazon), it comes with a full-color booklet and app with hundreds of recipes and is backed by a one-year limited warranty.

In 2010, Philips introduced the first air fryer at a consumer electronics fair in Berlin, Germany. Since then, the appliance has taken off with dozens of brands introducing different styles.

I was hesitant to try the Philips air fryer for several reasons, including the price — it's one of the most expensive options. Yet after using the Twin TurboStar XXL dozens of times over the past two months, I can say unequivocally that it's the best air fryer on the market. Below, I will explore what makes it better than the competition.

Specs

The Twin TurboStar XXL lives up to the XXL in its name with a footprint of 12 inches wide, 17 inches deep, and 12 inches tall. It has an impressive temperature range of 175 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit, and you can adjust the temp in 25-degree increments using the dial on the front.

The dial lets you set the timer (between 1 and 60 minutes) and choose among presets, including defrost, chicken, steak, fish, and cake. And a large, LCD screen display shows you the temp and time remaining in the cooking process.

The air fryer comes with a beautiful recipe book complete with full-color photos. There are more than 30 recipes. Plus, you can access over 200 more by downloading the app.

Philips backs this air fryer with a one-year limited warranty.

Set-up process

The set-up process was effortless. After removing the packaging, I washed the basket and pan with soap and water. I then let the air fryer run for a few minutes to warm up. Within 10 minutes of opening the box, I had potstickers baking. They came out pretty good, but I think I'll stick with the stovetop method. Despite being healthier, they were missing the steamed goodness. However, there were several other plates the air fryer knocked out of the park.

What makes the Philips air fryer stand out

What impresses me most about the Philips Twin TurboStar XXL Airfryer is that it combines size with fast cooking. The stated capacity of the air fryer is 3 pounds or 4 quarts of food, and in my experience, this is conservative. I had no problem fitting 3 pounds of chicken breasts in the basket without crowding.

There are three food items I test in all air fryers: toast, french fries, and boneless, skinless chicken breasts. The chicken breasts were safe to eat in 25 minutes, and they tasted juicy and delicious.

To test the french-fry capabilities, I cut up 2 pounds of yellow potatoes, tossed them with a tablespoon of olive oil and some seasoning, and put them in the air fryer. Every 10 minutes, I'd shake the basket up and see if they were done. The fries took a little less than 30 minutes, which is impressive compared to other models.

The toast was also quite fast by air fryer standards. In less than four minutes, the Twin TurboStar XXL evenly toasted a giant slice of my homemade bread.

You can also tell how well an air fryer bakes by how much heat it puts off. If the air fryer is emitting a lot of heat around the exterior, then it's heating your house and not cooking efficiently. The Philips air fryer stays cool to the touch everywhere except the back of the appliance, where it's incredibly hot.

Philips Twin TurboStar Technology XXL Airfryer

I've tested a dozen air fryers in the last year, and the recipe books always underestimate how long the dishes will take to cook. This is not the case with the Philips recipe book. I tried recipes for fries, drumsticks, and fish, and they were all accurate and scrumptious.

I love that the parts of the air fryer that get the dirtiest — the basket, mesh bottom, "fat reducer" tray, and pan — are dishwasher safe. They cleaned up nice and tidy in my dishwasher, and I haven't noticed any wear from using this cleaning method.

Cons to consider

I did have a little issue with the Twin TurboStar XXL releasing a fair amount of smoke while cooking. This likely had to do with me going a little overboard with the amount of olive oil I used for a recipe. After thoroughly cleaning the unit, the smoke problem went away. So, the moral of the story is to go light on the oil. I recommend picking up an oil mister.

Unlike most air fryers, the Philips air fryer doesn't come with accessories, such as a rack or skewers. The company sells these separately. I didn't miss having accessories, but if you're paying $250 for a small appliance, you'd expect it to come with plenty of extras.

The bottom line

From cooking family-size meals efficiently to cleaning up easily, the Philips Twin TurboStar XXL Airfryer hits all the right notes. But should you buy it? Are there more affordable and perfectly serviceable alternatives? Let's explore your options.

Should you buy the Philips air fryer?

Even though it's the best I've tested, $250 is a lot to spend on an air fryer. However, if you have the money and want to have the best, the Twin TurboStar XXL is the model to buy, especially if you want a unit that can cook larger quantities of food quickly. Due to its size, it may not be ideal for individuals with smaller kitchens, but it could be a good alternative if you don't have room for an oven.

Which model should you get?

You can save $50 off the price of the digital XXL by choosing the analog model. The only difference is you don't get the convenient digital interface. Instead, you set the appliance by manually adjusting the time and temperature dials.

Philips makes a few other air fryer models, including its XL Collection and compact solutions, but we don't feel they provide as strong of a balance of price and cooking abilities as the XXL air fryers. However, if you really want a Philips air fryer but want to limit your spending, consider the compact Philips Starfish Technology Airfryer, which only costs $115 and has a smaller footprint than the XXL.

What are your alternatives?

If the Philips air fryer doesn't appeal to you, I've found the following to be excellent alternatives:

  • Secura Extra Large Capacity Air Fryer ($69.99): At less than a third of the price of the Twin TurboStar XXL, the Secura air fryer is a workhorse that can hold 4.2-quarts of food. The oven is 1,500 watts and cooks quickly. The controls are basic analog. Still, this is a terrific alternative if you want to see what air frying is all about but aren't ready to commit to a more expensive unit. You can read my full review here.
  • Chefman Rotisserie Programmable Air Roaster ($149.99): One of the best-tasting and healthiest foods you can make in an air fryer is chicken. And the Chefman Roaster evenly roasts a whole chicken on a rotisserie spit. While this unit has an impressive capacity, digital controls, and a helpful window for tracking the progress of your food, it heats slowly and inefficiently. You can read my full review here.
  • Tobox Electric 1500W Digital Air Fryer ($90): The Tobox air fryer stands out because it has digital controls, preprogrammed settings, and can hold 3.8 quarts of food. Also, thanks to the well-ventilated design of the basket, the hot air flows freely to efficiently air fry your meal. Unfortunately, the vents make the basket hard to clean.

Overall, there are several outstanding alternatives available, but if you have it in your budget, we strongly recommend picking up the Philips Twin TurboStar XXL Airfryer. You will appreciate how quickly it cooks large meals and how effortless it is to clean up.

Pros: 4-quart capacity, TurboStar design facilitates faster cooking, dishwasher safe, digital interface, full-color recipe book

Cons: Expensive, doesn't come with accessories, smoking may occur if too much oil is used

Buy the Philips Twin TurboStar XXL Airfryer on Amazon for $249.95 (originally $349.95)

NOW WATCH: I cleaned my entire apartment with 4 of Amazon's highest-rated cleaning robots, but I could've done a much better job myself

I've been using this Dagne Dover laptop sleeve in place of my previous $20 one — here's why I’d pay $90 for it

0
0

Dagne Dover Laptop Case

  • I'd been using a purely functional $20 laptop case for two or three years before I started using one of Dagne Dover's new laptop sleeves— and I'm so annoyed with myself for being too practical.
  • The Dagne Dover laptop sleeves are functional but sleeker, slimmer, and more stylish than my previous case.
  • It's also water resistant and well padded, and comes with a detachable shoulder strap in case you want to carry it without a tote bag.
  • Knowing I've used my previous case for so long and seeing how stylish something as simple as a laptop case can be, the $90 price tag is a worthwhile investment for something I know I'll use every day for the next few years.

I've always thought of laptop cases as more functional than fashionable, so I bought this one from Amazon within five seconds of seeing more than 1,000 5-star reviews a few years ago. It's something that I need purely to protect my laptop, so I didn't want to waste my last two brain cells thinking about the style or color.

Well, it wasn't until I started testing the new Dagne Dover laptop sleeves that I realized function and fashion could — and should — co-exist in something so mundane and practical as a laptop case.

I have the 13-inch Laptop Sleeve in Black, which doesn't come cheap at $89.95. It's definitely a lot more than what I paid for my previous case and what I'd want to pay for a laptop sleeve in general, but the specs, design, and durability sold me.

Like most other Dagne Dover bags, the laptop sleeve is made with incredibly durable and water-resistant neoprene. I've spilled juice from leftover chicken teriyaki on it, and while there was a puddle at my bottom of my Cuyana tote, my laptop remained dry — which is great, because the sleeve was holding my work laptop.

There's a mesh pocket inside to carry pens or notebooks, with a Velcro closure so nothing falls out.

The black colorway required no thought on my end, though if I was more stylish, I'd have gone with one of cooler colors like Dune or Dark Moss. The zipper is also the same shade as the sleeve, so the entire look is very monochromatic.

The 13-inch fit my MacBook Pro perfectly, and the sleeve is only 1.13 inches thick when zipped. It's ever so slightly thicker than my old TomToc, which is 1.10 inches, but the cloth fabric on that one isn't flush against the case itself so it always looks and feels thicker than the stated specs. The Dagne Dover sleeve is made with neoprene so there's no extra decorative fabric that would add more thickness; it remains slim and sleek with or without my laptop inside.

Dagne Dover Pouch

The slimmer design also means it gives me extra room in my Cuyana tote bag to schlep more things around — though I don't know if that's a good idea. At least I've been using the Large Arlo Tech Pouch in Storm to organize things more, like charging cables, bandages, and hand sanitizer. I love that it unzips the entire length of the bag so it opens flat and I can see everything instantly. No more digging around the pouch only to poke myself with the tweezers that I never use but think are super important to have.

And if I don't want to carry my tote bag around, the Dagne Dover sleeves comes with detachable shoulder straps. I use it when I'm heading to a local coffee shop to do some work or chill, or when I'm trying to force myself to streamline things.

Despite the overall design of the sleeve being really slick, that's not to say it's flimsy — it's padded really well. In fact, I dropped my laptop a split second after I put it into the case, and the case just made a soft thudding noise when it hit the ground — no dents, scratches, or bumps that'd indicate what just happened. This was also with my work laptop inside — sorry.

Buy the Dagne Dover Laptop Sleeve for $89.95 (12-, 13-, or 15-inch)

How to change the name of a Bluetooth device on your iPhone

iphone bluetooth headphones

  • You can change the name of a Bluetooth device on your iPhone to make it easier to keep track of your devices.
  • If you want to rename a device, it must be paired with and currently connected to your iPhone.
  • To rename the device, tap the "i" in the Bluetooth device list and type a new name – you should be able to rename most devices, although some do not let you change the name.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

You may have so many Bluetooth devices paired with your iPhone that it can be hard to keep track of them all – headphones, earbuds, speakers, perhaps even a few cars.

The default name that appears in the Bluetooth settings are often no help either, with many cars simply identifying themselves as "Car Multimedia," for example. Thankfully, you can rename your Bluetooth devices to be more memorable.

Here's how to do it.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone Xs (From $999.99 at Best Buy)

Airpods with charging case (From $159.99 at Best Buy)

How to change the name of a Bluetooth device on the iPhone

1. Turn on the Bluetooth device you want to rename so it connects to your iPhone. You can only rename devices that are actively connected.

2. Start the Settings app on your iPhone.

3. Tap "Bluetooth."

4. Find the device you want to rename. Make sure it says "Connected," and then tap the "i" on the right side of the screen.

name 1

5. Tap "Name."

name 2

6. On the Name page, rename the device and then tap "Done" on the keyboard.

name 3

That's it – you've now renamed the device.

If you don't see the option to rename the device, there are two possibilities:

  • The device is not connected to the iPhone. Make sure the device is turned on and connected.
  • The device can't be renamed. Not all Bluetooth devices allow you to rename them, so you have to keep the default name assigned by the manufacturer.

The best women's swimsuits you can buy

0
0
  • Finding the right swimsuit for you may seem impossible, but we're here to help. We've tested swimsuits from leading brands to find the best ones.
  • Helen Jon makes the best swimsuits for most women, but we know there's no one best choice, so we list several other excellent swimsuit brands.
  • We like the impressive range of sizes and styles at Swimsuits for All, and we think Outplay makes the best gender-inclusive swimwear.
  • If you like to stay active at the beach or pool, we recommend suits from Patagonia and Athleta.
  • For those of you on a budget, we can't recommend Aerie enough.

When it comes to picking a swimsuit, it really is all about you. Be sure that the suit that you've chosen is one that makes you feel confident and comfortable.

There are several different styles to consider when choosing the best suit for your needs and style preferences. Are you more of a two-piece gal, or would you rather wear a one-piece? Do you prefer boardshorts and compression tops or long-sleeved rash guards?

You should also keep the supportiveness of the suit in mind. While you probably won't be running down a beach "Baywatch" style, you should consider how much moving about you'll be doing. If you want to swim, surf, paddleboard, run, play beach volleyball, and do other activities at the beach or pool, you need a swimsuit that will stay in place no matter what you get up to.

Women with larger cup sizes will also want to be sure that their bathing suit is properly lined, has built-in cups, or has some degree of support.

We've kept inclusivity top of mind in our guide to the best swimsuits, so we've included plus-size and gender-inclusive options to accommodate most everyone's needs.

Here are the best swimsuits for women:

Updated on 8/26/2019 by Malarie Gokey and Jen Gushue: Added Patagonia, Athleta, Swimsuits for All, and Outplay. Added what else we considered. Updated prices and formatting.

The best swimsuits for most women

Helen Jon makes a wide variety of classic swimsuits in simple patterns and colors, plus, it has bra-sized options for women with larger busts.

Helen Jon takes a unique approach to designing swimsuits for women — the brand tests styles on its employees instead of models. The result is swimsuits that fit a wide variety of women in all shapes and sizes.

Five women on the Insider Picks team— myself included — put Helen Jon's swimsuits to the test to see if they really do fit a variety of women's bodies, and we found that they do indeed. Every one of us loved our swimsuits. We tried one-pieces and two-pieces, including skimpier bikinis and bra-sized tops for larger busts.

Buying swimsuits online is fraught with peril for any woman, but if you have a large cup size like I do, it's even harder. Helen John's swimwear collection made it super easy for me to choose a swimsuit that would fit because there are tops specifically designed for D/DD women like me.

The D/DD cup twist underwire bra bikini top fits me perfectly, offers excellent support, and looks exactly like a normal bra under clothing when you're en route to the beach. The Slimmer hipster bottom I chose also fit perfectly and was comfortable. I swam in the Atlantic Ocean and ran around on the beach in this swimsuit without any problems. Plus, the suit dried fairly quickly afterward. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Simple designs, fit a variety of bust sizes, DD+ tops, one-piece and two-piece suits

Cons: Limited patterns and colors, pricey

The best affordable swimsuits

Aerie's swimsuits are cute and affordable — especially since they're on sale right now.

You can still get a cute swimsuit if you're on a budget. American Eagle's lingerie brand Aerie makes great swimwear that's affordable. The entire collection is currently on sale for 40-60% off, so every suit is a great deal. It is unclear how long the sale will last, but even after it expires, Aerie's swimsuits will still be about $50 for a one-piece suit and about $60 for a two-piece suit.

The one-piece suits range from sexy high-leg styles with intriguing cutouts to more modest pieces. Aerie's two-piece ensembles are easy to mix and match. You can choose from all kinds of bottoms that range in coverage from a full high-waisted option to slinky bikini cuts and cute cheeky hipsters.

The tops are mostly bikini style, though some offer more coverage or support than others. Since Aerie is a lingerie brand, some of the tops are almost bra-like in terms of support and structure, which is great for women who need more support.

Aerie has lots of cute prints and color options available, too, so you're almost guaranteed to find something you'll like.

It seems like everyone from celebrities and Instagram stars to ordinary women love Aerie's swimwear, as Yahoo Style reported in 2017. A writer from PopSugar loves Aerie's one-piece suits in particular, writing, "thank you, Aerie, for making such a point to celebrate bodies of all sizes and for creating a swimsuit that makes me feel good about my body. I'm a fan for life!" — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Affordable, cute styles, one-piece suits, two-piece suits, a variety of sizes

Cons: May not last as long

The best eco-friendly swimsuit

Patagonia's swimsuits are made for women who want to swim, surf, and stay active at the beach, plus, they're made from eco-friendly materials.

Patagonia new line of women's swimwear includes everything from rash guards and long-sleeved one-pieces to bikinis, tankinis, and board shorts. Like all of the company's products, Patagonia's swimwear is meant for active use.

The swimsuits are all made from high-quality, recycled nylon or polyester fabric that's non-slip and has UPF sun protection. Several women on the Insider Picks team — including me —recently tried out Patagonia's new swimwear collection, and we were impressed by how comfortable the suits were.

Whether we were swimming, playing beach volleyball, or diving, the swimsuits stayed in place and kept everything covered. Women's swimsuits are often designed more for style than substance, but Patagonia's collection breaks that trend. You can actually move freely in these swimsuits without fear of a wardrobe malfunction.

As someone with a short torso, a skinny ribcage, and a larger chest, I often struggle to find swimsuits that offer enough support and space in the bustline without being too loose around my ribcage.

The one-piece I tried had adjustable tie straps in the back, so I could adjust it to fit me perfectly. The cups were also adequately supportive, thanks to a strong underbust seam and the adjustable design of the cups that allowed me to spread out the fabric and more fully cover my chest. I swam, jumped, and ran around freely in the swimsuit without any problems.

The range of colors and patterns is limited, but the patterns are unique. I loved my one-piece's colorful parrot design. The size range is also a bit limited, running from XS to XL. The other downside is the $120 to $180 price of the swimwear. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Attractive suits, stay in place when active, UPF sun protection, Fair Trade Certified, recycled materials, comfortable, good variety of styles

Cons: Expensive, limited colors and sizes

The best gender-inclusive swimsuit

For those who want a more androgynous swim silhouette, OutPlay offers tons of gender-neutral options from rashguards to swim trunks to full coverage swim tops.

Finding the right swimwear can be a daunting and frustrating endeavor for those who want to eschew highly feminine styles. I'm a queer person who presents androgynously and typically wears menswear, so swimsuits — especially tops — have been quite tricky for me. For a long time, going to the beach or pool was a stressful experience because I never had a bathing suit that made me feel comfortable in my own skin. Then I found OutPlay.

OutPlay offers gender-neutral swimsuits for women, non-binary people, and trans folks who are looking for simple, gender-inclusive swimwear. I bought my first OutPlay top — the Swimmee ($48) — back in 2016, and I've worn it every single time I've gone to the pool or beach in the last three years. It's held up marvelously, even after multiple summers of saltwater, chlorine, and putting it in the dryer (even though you're really not supposed to). It's still my go-to bathing suit top, and honestly, it's the only one I ever wear.

The Swimmee is a sports-bra-style top, but if you're looking for something with even more coverage, they also offer swim tanks ($55) and rashguards ($58.95). Most of the tops come in both low-compression and high-compression, giving an option to bind your chest flat or minimize its appearance. The low-compression option still offers a ton of support — about as much as a standard sports bra — but the high-compression option takes it to the next level.

All of the tops come in several solid colors and stripes, so they pair well with a wide variety of bottoms, so I often pair my Swimmee with whatever fun swim trunks I happen to find that season. They also offer several choices of their own, and everything comes in similar color schemes, maximizing your ability to mix and match. The Tomboier ($30), which fits like a pair of boxer briefs, is OutPlay's signature style, but my go-to are the boardshorts ($52), since I prefer to keep it loose and breezy.

While OutPlay does tend to be on the pricier end, the durability has dropped my cost-per-wear down to virtually nothing. It's some of the most reliable swimwear I've ever owned, to say nothing of the fact that this is the first swimsuit that has ever made me feel comfortable and confident. With OutPlay, I can bring my style to the beach without compromise, and that's absolutely priceless. — Jen Gushue

Pros: Durable and long-lasting androgynous swim styles for those looking for a simple, gender-neutral silhouette

Cons: A bit on the pricier side, and they don't offer many variations on style. If you're looking for something with more flair, this brand isn't for you.

The best plus-sized swimwear

Swimsuits for All sells swimsuits of all kinds in sizes 4 through 40, so anyone should be able to find a swimsuit that fits perfectly and looks gorgeous.

It's not easy to shop for swimsuits online and size ranges are often limited, making a tricky situation worse. Swimsuits for All is aiming to change that with its big selection of swimsuits in a variety of styles and sizes ranging from 4 to 40.

Whether you want a bikini, tankini, one-piece, a swim dress, or a coverup, you're likely to find what you're looking for on the company's site. Many of the suits cost around $100 or less, and they go on sale frequently.

There's also a big selection of plus-size suits, so you can filter results down to the size range you need.

We asked several women at Insider Inc to try Swimsuits for All, and all of our testers enjoyed the process. One of our reviewers commented that she liked how easy it was to find reviews from plus-size women because it helped her trouble-shoot sizing and fit issues while she shopped.

Insider Picks editor Sally Kaplan was impressed by the cup support in the one-piece she tried, and several other reviewers also commented on how supportive the suits they tried were.

There are two downsides that we came across in our testing: Some suits were sold out of larger sizes and shipping isn't free on all orders. Luckily, if the size or style doesn't work out, Swimsuits for All offers free returns within 60 days and exchanges with free two-way shipping. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Patterns and colors, wide range of sizes and styles, great for plus-size women

Cons: Some larger sizes sold out, no free shipping

The best active swimsuits

Athleta's swimwear is comfortable, reasonably priced, and great for women who like to stay active when they're at the beach or pool.

Athleta is known its functional and stylish activewear, and its swimsuits are just as great for women who like to be active at the beach or pool. You can swim, surf, run, dive, and even play beach volleyball in these swimsuits without feeling uncomfortable or worrying about your top falling off.

The swimsuits range from functional bikinis to tankinis and one-piece suits, so there's something for everyone. Around 85% of Athleta's new swimwear collection is made from sustainable materials like recycled nylon. The fabric is also durable, thanks to UPF sun protection.

Several women on our team reviewed Athleta's swimwear, and we consider it to be the best active swimwear you can buy. We were impressed by how comfortable the suits were — there was no digging or pinching along the seams and the suits offered full coverage where we wanted it.

The swimsuits are true to size and quick drying so you don't have to sit around waiting for your suit to dry before you head home.

Athleta's swimwear isn't the cheapest, but it's not terribly expensive, either: Bikini tops cost $49-$79, bottoms cost $49-$69, and one-pieces cost $98-$128. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: UPF 50+, ultra-resilient fabric, supportive, breathable suit, moves with you, multiple colors and sizes to choose from, ecofriendly materials

Cons: A bit pricey

The best swimsuits from a lingerie startup

Lively is a lingerie company that also makes excellent swimsuits that fit a wide variety of bust sizes comfortably.

Lively makes excellent affordable swimwear that's simple, supportive, and stylish. You can get a one-piece for $65 or a bikini top and bottom for $80.

Because Lively is a lingerie startup, many of the bikini tops are based on bra sizing, which makes it super easy to find your fit. We've tried multiple bikini tops and bottoms from Lively (as well as its bras), and we've never been disappointed.

The Busty Bralette top perfect fit my DD chest and gave me the support I need while still looking sexy and stylish. I got it in the fun tomato red color along with the high-waisted bottoms, which also fit perfectly and offered good coverage.

Lively's Bandeau top is also fantastic, comfortable, and supportive. I love the mint green color and the secure feel of the bandeau style top. Both of these swimsuits are great for everything from swimming and running after a frisbee on the beach to lounging in the sand.

Lively also has more itty-biity binkins and one-piece suits that I haven't tried, but given how well the other suits fared, and how well reviewed all of Lively's swimwear is on its website, we feel that it's safe to recommend them as well. Besides, Lively has a 30-day return policy, so if you change your mind, it's no big deal. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Affordable, simple designs, fit a variety of bust sizes, DD+ tops, one-piece and two-piece suits

Cons: More limited selection than some

Shop all Lively Swimwear for $65 (one-piece suits) to $80 (both pieces in a two-piece suit)

What else we considered

  • Boden: We like Boden's wide range of fun, cute swimsuit styles. The brand also has tops that use bra-cup sizing, which is nice for women who need more support.
  • KhongboonWe previously recommended Khongboon's bikinis, but they are a bit pricey and impractical for most women's needs. Still, if you want a very sexy bikini, it's a good option.
  • Andie: We like Andie's one-piece suits, but there are better options from Helen John, Athleta, Patagonia, and some of our other top picks.
  • Eloquii: We like Eloquii's plus-size swimsuits, but Swimsuits for All has a better selection of sizes and styles.
  • Summersalt: If you want a high-fashion swimsuit that doesn't cost as much as top-shelf brands, Summersalt is a good option. However, our views are split on this suit: Some of us liked it, but others found the styles impractical for larger busts and petite women.

The best suburbs in every state in America

Boulder City, Nevada

There's a widespread stereotype that living in the suburbs is boring. But that's not always the case. The best suburbs offer access to parks and cultural activities, good job prospects, and top restaurants — in addition to low crime rates and well-regarded public schools.

GoBankingRates, a website that conducts finance-based studies, recently determined the best suburb in each US state based on major metropolitan statistical areas (MSA).

For the purposes of the study, GoBankingRates defined "suburbs" as cities located within 45 minutes driving distance of the principal city in the MSA (according to Google Maps) and with populations under 100,000. President Trump's golf courses have been at the center of many controversial moments throughout his presidency.

Just hours after a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas claimed 20 lives on August 3, President Trump was spotted greeting guests at his golf course in Bedminster, New Jersey.

Trump denounced the El Paso attack, saying, in a tweet, that it "was not only tragic, it was an act of cowardice." But, as Business Insider's Ellen Cranley reported, the tweets appeared to be his only response as he stayed at the club.

Less than a month later, after a rocky few days at this year's G7 summit, President Trump suggested hosting the 2020 summit at his golf course in Miami, Florida which, as Business Insider reported, could violate the constitution because his business would personally benefit from it.

President Trump's love for golf and extensive collection of courses continues to receive widespread media attention. Since his inauguration, he's gone golfing at least 93 times across 2o2 golf course visits, according to an online tracker.

Business Insider compiled a list of President Trump's 16 operating golf courses, along with their amenities from the Trump Organization. Keep reading for a look inside each.

Divorce rates increase at the end of the summer. Here are 6 reasons why.

BI_Graphics_9 facts about divorce 10

  • Divorce rates consistently peak in August, and Business Insider spoke with several experts to find out why.
  • Couples think summer will help them rekindle their relationship, but the extra bonding time only emphasizes marital problems.
  • The end of summer is also perfect timing for a divorce because most family vacations are over and it's far away enough from the holidays.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

August not only spells the end of summer but also the end of many marriages.

According to a study out of the University of Washington, divorce rates consistently peak toward the end of the summer, specifically in August.

In fact, Chris Farish, a Dallas-based attorney and president of the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals, said he sees more clients coming into his office in August than any other month.

"I also find that clients who might have consulted with me in the spring or even the fall of the prior year, seem to come back in August ready to proceed," Farish told Business Insider.

Business Insider spoke with other experts to find out why people are filing for divorce when the summer comes to an end.

Firstly, couples think the summer break will fix their marriage, but they ultimately end up disappointed.

Summer is a time to restart after the cold winter months. For couples who have had marital problems throughout the year, they see summer as a break from those problems and as an opportunity to rekindle their love.

Lori Gephart, a licensed psychologist and family mediator, said couples also view summer as the beginning of a new chapter.

"Many people may have been holding out hope that the more relaxed pace of summer break and summer vacations would help to mend their relationship," Gephart said. "Instead [they] may feel disappointed and disillusioned with the marriage when patterns haven't changed."

Unfortunately, the problems that were there at the beginning of the summer are still there at the end, leaving many disappointed and looking to divorce.

Summer can also highlight problems in a marriage because there's an added emphasis on family bonding.

Marital problems can often get overshadowed by the routine of everyday life. For couples with children, this is especially true. But when school is let out, the routine changes and then there's a shift towards family bonding.

"During the school year, we tend to fall into the pattern of get up, feed the kids, take the kids to school, go to work, come home, cook dinner, do homework, and go to bed," Farish said. "When the kids get out of school, that pattern is disrupted. It causes parents to look around and wonder what they are doing. You couple that with more time spent together as a family, and the fragile ties that hold a marriage together can sometimes fray and snap."

Children go off to college in August, leaving many with empty nest syndrome.

In August, married couples often send their children off to college, leaving some couples as empty nesters. Their newly empty homes sometimes prompt couples to re-evaluate their marriage.

Farish said he had one client who waited 10 years for her last child to leave for college before divorcing her husband.

"As soon as they dropped the child off at the dorm, all she could think about the whole ride home was filing for the divorce," he told Business Insider.

Some couples wait out the summer to give their family one last memory.

Many couples don't like to break the news to their children during the school year because divorce often means uprooting their lives. Instead, couples try to wait till the end of the school year, but then they push it back because they made plans and booked family vacations.

"It can feel overwhelming to think about the details of moving, either for yourself or moving your spouse out and the million little details that fly through one's mind as they think about divorce. So they will wait," Anne Lucas, clinical director of the Evergreen Clinic, told Business Insider. "And then school is about to end but we have made all these plans — and often paid for them — to vacation and visit with extended family members or attend the annual gathering of friends at a beach house or just the social obligations that come with summer."

August gives children enough time to adjust to the divorce before the holiday season.

Divorce can be hard on children, especially during the holiday season in November and December. Gephart said some couples decide to divorce in August because it's easier on the kids.

"There may be a feeling of urgency to end the marriage in advance of the holiday season so that children have time to adjust before the holidays," Gephart said.

Lastly, people are more likely to meet someone new in the summer.

One of the most common causes of divorce is infidelity, and the summer may inspire a wandering eye, according to Dr. Bat Sheva Marcus, the clinical director of Maze Women's Sexual Health

"In the summer we tend to be much more playful. I think because the days are longer and because we can go outside, we are willing to try and be playful," Marcus told Business Insider's Sam Rega. "You take off that coat and you take off the long pants and all of a sudden you're wearing a bathing suit or a t-shirt. Having less clothes really does make you more aware of your body and the body of the person next to you. "

Lavanila's $14 natural deodorant works well, smells lovely, and has lasted me for months so far

Lavanilla deodorant

  • As consumers have become more cognizant of the ingredients in their chemical-based body products and skin care, interest in natural deodorants is on the rise.
  • But many of them are ineffective, don't smell good, or give the wearer a rash.
  • I've found that Lavanila's Elements Collection ($14 per stick) works well and smells lovely.

At the beginning of summer, I went on the hunt for a new deodorant. I definitely wanted to use a natural one for a couple reasons. One is that antiperspirants have sometimes turned my white shirts yellow because an ingredient in them can interact with the bacteria that lives in sweat. Another is that didn't want to be ashamed of sweating: it's a normal and healthy process, after all. Sweating is how your body regulates its temperature, and I just wanted to be able to sweat without the odor.

Before we get into it, let's clear one thing up about antiperspirants versus deodorants: Antiperspirants use chemicals to block your body from sweating, whereas a deodorant just helps to mask or get rid of the smell of sweaty armpits. Science has not yet produced natural antiperspirants, but it has allowed researchers to produce natural deodorants. If you didn't know this already, sweat is actually odorless, but it's the bacteria that lives in sweat that gives it an odor.

Lavanila deodorant

Researching natural deodorant and its ingredients

So, I was looking for a natural deodorant, but many in the past hadn't worked for me. Either they did nothing to mask the smell, their scent wasn't something I was passionate about using on the daily, or they gave me a weird, red rash. I Googled "best natural deodorant," saw Lavanila being sold in places I already shopped like Anthropologie, Sephora, and Ulta. I found their Elements Collection, and the "Air" scent contained vanilla and jasmine.  Those are scents I love, so I decided to research more.

But what ingredients could a natural deodorant contain that would set them apart from the ineffective or irritating ones I have tried? I learned that many natural ones like Lavanila's get their odor-destroying power from essential oils. Lavanila has lemon peel oil, and lemon is known to be antibacterial.  I felt more comfortable knowing that the ingredient going on my underarms was something I use in my kitchen, instead of harsh chemicals like parabens that couldirritate my skin. There's also aloe in the deodorant. If you've had a sunburn, you know that aloe calms redness and moisturizes your skin, so it's definitely a great ingredient to have in a deodorant. The icing on the ingredient cake is that this deodorant is vegan and cruelty free.

My experience with Lavanila deodorant

On first application I noticed how sturdy the stick was, how smooth the deodorant felt, and how calming it smelled. I was a little worried when I switched to natural deodorant that I'd have a "detox" where my body remembered to start sweating again and would send out a ton of smelly sweat, but thankfully that didn't happen.

On a typical day, I apply it once and my underarms experience no irritation. They don't look red, there's no build-up of deodorant on my underarms, I haven't gotten a rash, and my shirts have not gotten stained yellow. I honestly don't even remember it's there, unless I give my shirt a sniff and I find that vanilla and jasmine scent.

I haven't stopped sweating entirely, but this deodorant holds up well when I'm in air-conditioned offices or at home. Even if I do notice that I've been sweating, I don't see big sweat stains on my clothes, and my underarms don't feel uncomfortably sticky if I do sweat. If you're a very active person, I would not recommend this deodorant, since if you're out for more than a few hours sweating or in hot temperatures, some of your natural odor will come through. For my purposes, though, it works well as an everyday defense against odor.

Why I can justify the $14 price

The deodorant is $14, which can be hard to swallow when ones you've seen in the drugstore are around $5. But the deodorant is of a nice hefty size (two ounces, so it breaks down to $7 per ounce), and because it's a wider tube than most deodorants I've seen, I don't feel like I'm using much to cover my entire underarm area.  I've used it for months and the consistency hasn't changed, and I don't see myself getting anywhere near the bottom of the twist-up tube yet.

I'm definitely likely to repurchase it, and maybe try some of the other great sounding scents, like violet and rose, or red ginger and wild orange

15 baby products you'll really need when you bring your newborn home — from a dad who's been there, done that

0
0

Nuna Pipa

  • There's plenty of excitement during the trip home from the hospital and in those first few days with a your new baby, but this can also be a period of stress and worry.
  • How do you keep the little one safe and warm? What do you use to bathe them? To swaddle them? To clean that tiny bottom and tend to umbilical cord care?
  • With the right gear at the ready, the process of bringing home your newborn can be that more manageable — though there's no gadget that can give you back your hours of sleep.
  • Most infants go through an average of 10 diapers a day. I recommend starting out with Huggies Little Snugglers Baby Diapers because they have that all-important cutout where your child's umbilical cord stump will be.

Just a quick heads up: There's a lot of stuff that goes into modern parenting. That includes tons of products. Your infant is going to have you buying everything from wipe warmers to nasal aspirators to sound machines to monitors to rattles to rocking chairs and oh ... so ... much ... more.

Do they need all that stuff? No, probably not all of it, but I will gladly purchase something that will help soothe, comfort, and protect my little one. If it takes a bit of stress away from mom and dad, too, then even better.

Over the years, I've written about plenty of baby products, and I've even written rather comprehensive lists of the gear a family needs to care for an infant in the first year. But today, I'm focusing on a few days that can be the most magical but also the most harrowing time in a family's life: the transition from hospital to the home. Whether you are having a first child or a fifth, the process of leaving the hospital can be a bit scary. Once you get home, you're on your own with that little one!

Here, we'll cover a wide range of products, some of which you'll start using in the first few days after your child's birth and will continue to use for months or even years — some of which you will use for only a few days after birth. I'm also leaving off some items that are obvious enough that you'll already have them on hand (like onesies and pajamas) or that the hospital will provide (like a receiving blanket). So, what do you need when you bring a baby home from the hospital? Mostly, you need sleep. But the items on this list are important, too.

Here's what you'll need when you bring home a baby for the first time:

Transportation: moving baby from hospital to home (and then out into the world)

Nuna Pipa Lite LX Infant Car Seat, $419.95, at Nordstrom

Nuna DEMI Grow Stroller, $799.95, at Nordstrom

Infantino Go Forward Evolved Ergonomic Carrier, $43.89, at Amazon

To get your newborn home from the hospital, you'll probably need a car seat, stroller, or carrier. Depending on where you live and how you commute, you might even need all three. Make life easy on yourself and choose an infant car seat and stroller that work in tandem.

When it comes to a child's car seat, safety is always the primary concern. Our son's car seat was in the very top echelon of safety ratings, and that's why we chose it. It also turned out to be surprisingly heavy, which was not ideal for my wife in the postpartum recovery phase or for anyone as the kid grew.As the birth of our daughter draws near, we've selected a new car seat, one that is in the top tier in terms of safety ratings but also blissfully lightweight.

The Nuna Pipa Lite LX Infant Car Seat weighs less than 5-and-a-half pounds yet is rated to hold babies from 4 to 32 pounds. It has head-and-neck-support padding, an easy-to-use five-point harness, and washable, flame-retardant fabric. Also, the base installs in a car in about five seconds using the LATCH system, making it the least-frustrating car-seat-installation process I've yet to encounter. The seat is reinforced with aircraft-grade aluminum and shock-absorbing foam, so in the unfortunate event of an accident, I'm confident our kid will be safe — and that's what really counts here.

But hey, convenience is nice, too, right? And the fact that the PIPA Lite LX seat can pop off its base and click right into our Nuna DEMI Grow Stroller is certainly convenient. This is one of the lightest-weight full-size strollers I have used (and I have owned three full-size strollers, not to mention two umbrella strollers, and used my fair share more), and it handles deftly on varied terrain even when laden with a child, groceries, toys, and the other accouterments of life.

While the stroller is large enough for two kids to use simultaneously in an over-under arrangement, it also folds down small enough to fit in the trunk of just about any car. Used in tandem with the car seat or with its infant seat, the DEMI Grow can safely accommodate infants. But its frame can also support a kid weighing as much as 50 pounds, so this stroller genuinely will "grow" with your family. Yes, it's pricey, but it will last for many years longer than you'll need it, so plan ahead to hand it down.

We'll bring our daughter home in the PIPA Lite XL car seat and will then switch largely to walking for many outings. On some of those walks, she will be tucked into a baby carrier. We have two of these, but the carrier I'll primarily use is the Infantino Go Forward Evolved Ergonomic Carrier. You really don't need two baby carriers, but say you already have one and get another as a gift, I recommend you keep both. Then you can have one adjusted to each parent's body and at the ready. And here's an insider tip: In the early newborn days, you won't use the carrier for days out, you'll use it to strap a fussy baby to your chest so you can shuffle around the house at 3 a.m. desperately trying to soothe them to sleep.

I'm a fan of the Infantino Go Forward carrier because it's designed to hold your infant in much the same position as you would with your arms. Whether facing in against your chest or turned out to see the world, the carrier gently but securely holds a child in positions that are comfortable enough for long periods of time and naps. It's also rated to hold a child weighing up to 40 pounds, which is great, even though most 4-year-olds probably won't want to go in a carrier anymore.

Warm and cozy: keep that little bug snug

L'ovedbaby Organic Infant Cap, $9.45 to $13.38, at Amazon

BundleBee Baby Wrap Blanket, $42, at Amazon

It's up to you to choose which onesies, pj's, and tees your baby wears for cuteness and style, but when it comes to keeping a child warm, you should choose based on performance, not aesthetics. Don't worry, though, I found you a cute cap and blanket.

As a general rule of thumb, a baby needs one more layer than an adult for proper warmth. So if you're wearing a T-shirt and jeans, put your baby in a onesie, a sweater, pants, and socks. If you add a sweatshirt, wrap your baby in a blanket. And hats ... newborns should always be wearing soft, cozy hats unless the ambient temperature is warm enough that you yourself would be comfortable sitting around in the nude. The L'ovedbaby Organic Infant Caps are 100% cotton, super soft, and come in a variety of colors and patterns, all of which are subtle enough to blend in with the rest of a baby's outfit. While hats with ears, bows, or animal faces are cute, go with a hat you can trust in terms of materials and design.

Unless you live in the tropics, when not in your arms, your newborn should be wrapped in a nice warm blanket most of the time. But don't use any old blanket you have in the house, as a loose blanket can quickly become a safety hazard around a baby who can't even get a hand in their mouth, let alone clear a swatch of fabric from off of his face. The BundleBee Baby Wrap Blanket creates the perfect snug cocoon shape for keeping a baby warm while also keeping their face clear. It's not a true swaddle, which wraps tightly enough to keep a baby's arms secure to their body, but is intended only to add warmth. You can wrap this blanket around a swaddled child during sleep time, or the baby can be wrapped up in this cotton-lined, polyester-stuffed blanket while in a stroller's bassinet, a crib, or lying on your lap.

Bedtime: sleep for baby — and maybe for mom and dad

Halo Bassinet Swivel Sleeper, $279.99, at Amazon

Joovy Room Playard and Nursery Center, $120, at Amazon

You can start your baby sleeping in a full-size crib any time you want, but with a bassinet or pack and play, it's easy to keep a newborn close to your own bed, minimizing the interference of frequent feeding and changing sessions.

Bassinets definitely fall into the category of products you will only use for a few months at most, but the ease of grabbing a crying baby without getting out of your own bed and the added hours of rest everyone in the family gets when the baby is sleeping well are worth the investment. At $280, the Halo Bassinet Swivel Sleeper is definitely an investment, but it's also one of the best bassinets out there. It will keep your baby safe thanks to its sturdy design and its mesh walls, which prevent suffocation danger. It also features optional vibrations and gentle music or soothing sounds. As its height can be adjusted to rest level with your bed and the wall of the bassinet can be lowered for easy retrieval of your child, the Halo makes it easy to pick up a baby in need of nursing, changing, or snuggles.

A pack and play isn't as convenient as a bassinet, but you can use one for a number of years instead of months, and they are designed to pack away for easy travel and storage. The Joovy Room Playard and Nursery Center comes with a bassinet insert that's safe to use until your child weighs 15 pounds, while the main Playard can be used by kids well into their toddler years, whether for napping or play. This pack and play also comes with a changing table, storage areas on both sides, and a travel bag. If you travel frequently, a pack and play is a must for creating a safe spot for your kid. And in those first few days after you leave the hospital, a pack and play bassinet is a great way to establish a safe, snuggly spot right at home.

Bath time: cleanliness and healthiness go hand in hand

Angelcare Bath Support Chair, $13.29, at Amazon

Burt's Bees Baby Organic Cotton Washcloths, $6.99, at Amazon

The Honest Company Shampoo and Body Wash, $8.99, at Amazon

Newborns aren't great about keeping themselves clean, so you'll have to be. Here are a few fine products that will help you out.

It's important not to submerge a newborn's body in water until well after their umbilical cord has detached and the site has healed. Baby's first baths are given with warm, wet washcloths, but you can start using a bath chair well before the actual baths commence. The Angelcare Bath Support bath chair was designed for use in a tub, but it can also be placed on a countertop (put a towel underneath it to minimize the cleanup later). Then you can gently dab away at your newborn with their head and neck properly supported.

As for which washcloths and soap to use, there are dozens if not hundreds of decent options out there, but I'll tell you what we chose quite carefully. Okay, my wife chose quite carefully. We're a Burt's Bees Baby Organic Cotton Washcloth family, and we started using Honest Company Shampoo and Body Wash from our son's very first baths, and we still use it now that he's almost 4 1/2. It's hypoallergenic, tear-free, and it smells great, too.

Nursing: comfort and support for baby and mother

Infantino Elevate Adjustable Nursing Pillow, $39.99, at Amazon

Moon and Back Organic Burp Cloths, $24.99, at Amazon

In the early days after birth, nursing will likely all take place at home, so worry about privacy nursing covers and pumps for collecting milk later. Right now, it's all about comfort for baby and mother.

You don't need a dedicated nursing pillow to breastfeed your baby, but you probably won't want to live without one once you've used it. The Infantino Elevate Adjustable Nursing Pillow is a great choice because it allows you to nurse your baby in a variety of positions by flipping the soft padded layers from one side to the other. You can keep your baby flat for a cradle nursing position or elevate their head during a football hold, for example. And unlike most nursing pillows, there's no cover to be zipped off for washing; you just throw the whole contraption into the washing machine.

Our son spit up all of three times that I can remember during the course of his year of breastfeeding, but other babies spit up three times in the course of a single feeding. So while our burp cloths went largely unused during round one of nursing, we'll see how it goes with round two. Either way, the Moon and Back Organic Cotton Burp Cloths are here at the ready, and if you trust a host of rave, 5-star reviews about these things from other parents, they're a great get. And I can vouch that they sure make fine impromptu bibs and napkins.

Changing time: wipes, diapers, and more

Huggies Little Snugglers Baby Diapers, $28.18, at Amazon

Pure Mountain Botanicals Goldenseal Root Capsules, $20.68, at Amazon

Amazon Elements Baby Wipes, $17.99, at Amazon

It might take a while to find the right brand of diapers, as they really do have different fits, and you might want to try a few kinds of wipes out, too, as they have different textures and scents. But save the experimenting for later. In those first few days, just be ready.

Most infants go through an average of 10 diapers a day, so you will have ample opportunity to test out various brands. I recommend starting out with Huggies Little Snugglers Baby Diapers because they're soft against the skin and cushioned for comfort, highly absorbent, and because they have that all-important cutout where your child's umbilical cord stump will be.

Speaking of umbilical cords, while in the past parents were advised to clean around the base of the stump with rubbing alcohol, that's no longer an American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation. The best practice is usually to leave the umbilical cord stump largely alone and dress your child in loose clothing when possible. If you want to speed the drying out and detachment of the cord, you can sprinkle a dusting of goldenseal root powder over it. Pure Mountain Botanicals Organic Goldenseal Root is a fine choice for that.

As for wipes, we started out with Honest Company baby wipes and later moved to Seventh Generation wipes. But given how many wipes you'll go through in the early days, I recommend you start out with Amazon Elements Baby Wipes. Why? Well, partially because they're unscented; dye-, alcohol-, and paraben-free; and durable enough for vigorous wiping. But more because you'll get nine packs of 80 wipes for $17.99.

The Empathy Suite is located in the resort's middle building, known as the Fantasy Tower.

All six of Palms' sky villas were renovated as a part of a $690 million upgrade to the hotel, which was first established in 2001 and is now owned by the Fertitta brothers of Station Casino. Other villas range from $25,000 to $50,000 a night.

The suite's designer, Damien Hirst, is a well-known contemporary artist whose work first appeared in the late 1980s.

Hirst is known for boundary-pushing collections, ranging from formaldehyde preservations to carefully arranged pill bottles. In 2017, his work filled the Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana in Venice, two art museums funded by billionaire art collector François Pinault.

Upon check-in to the Empathy Suite, guests receive 24-hour butler service, chauffeured car service, a private art tour of the hotel property, and a $10,000 credit to use at the hotel.

The Empathy Suite was formerly known as the Hugh Hefner Suite, and in 2012, CNN Travel ranked the suite No. 5 on a list of most expensive hotel rooms. Originally $40,000 per night, the new luxury renovations have spurred a $60,000 price increase.
