7 multimillion-dollar homes that have been sitting on the market for years

lynnewood hall

Some multimillion-dollar homes sell in just days, while others sit on the marketplace for years.

Many of the unsellable properties have received hefty price cuts, belonged to celebrities, or both. Others are abandoned historic mansions now listed for mere fractions of their original worth, though some — like Lynnewood Hall, the largest home for sale in America— are still worth millions even in disrepair.

Read more: 10 abandoned mansions around the world that likely used to be worth millions

Homes on this list range from Michael Jackson's vacated Neverland Ranch to a decaying mansion on New York's Carleton Island that will cost the new owner millions in renovations. Michael Jordan has not lived in his Chicago mansion in years but the empty property still struggles to find a new owner after six years on the market. Though his home, like others, is now devoid of its famous resident, the property is not completely abandoned as staff members continue to maintain the grounds for potential buyers.

Business Insider's Lina Batarags previously reported that "over-customized" homes — like Michael Jordan's and Michael Jackson's — are hard to sell. Both estates feature personalized entry gates amongst other features, making homes undesirable to potential buyers with their own visions for a luxury home.

Other homes on the list include a Versailles-inspired Manhattan townhome that has been on and off the market for 16 years, along with a massive Bel Air mansion called "Billionaire" selling at a $100 million discount. The latter is just one example of how Los Angeles has too many megamansions for sale

Keep reading for a look at luxury homes currently struggling to sell on the market.

Michael Jackson's infamous Neverland Ranch first appeared on the market in 2015. Now listed for $31 million, the property has undergone extensive changes and was renamed Sycamore Valley Ranch.

Originally listed for $100 million, the property was reduced to $65 million in 2017. Its most recent price cut in February reflects a 70% drop from its initial asking price.

Despite the removal of Jackson's zoo and amusement park, the estate still features its recognizable train station and its original main house, which was built in the 1982.

The 2,700-acre estate features a 6-room, 7-bathroom luxury home. The home also includes a pool, a 50-seat movie theatre, and a guesthouse nearby. A total of 22 structures are scattered across the massive property.

Sources have cited the recently revisited allegations of sexual assault against Jackson as having decreased the ranch's value following the release of the four-hour HBO documentary "Leaving Neverland" in March.

According to The Guardian, "Jackson distanced himself from the ranch after his 2005 acquittal on charges that he molested children at the property. The singer opted to live elsewhere in the world until his death."

In 2006, staff members were told to stop working by California authorities, and Jackson eventually defaulted on a loan due to financial difficulties. After the singer's death in 2009, the property remained "in limbo" until it appeared on the market in six years later.

The property continues to remain uninhabited, though the grounds are maintained for potential buyers.

Michael Jordan's customized celebrity home has also struggled to find a new owner. The property — like Jackson's estate — has undergone several hefty price chops as it continues to sit on the market.

The home was originally listed for $29 million, and is now on the market for $14.9 million.

Jordan has not lived in the mansion for several years. However, even though the property is empty, it is still manned by staff to keep it in pristine condition for the next owner.

The custom Chicago mansion was completed in 1995. According to previous reporting from Business Insider's Cork Gaines, Jordan lived in the home for 19 years; it has now been on the market for six. Though he no longer calls the mansion home, Jordan still pays more than $100,000 in annual property taxes.

Among other custom-designed rooms, the home features a personalized basketball court.

Business Insider's Lina Batarags previously reported that personalized homes are hard to sell. Certain luxury amenities, such as home gyms, do not appeal to every buyer; as a result, many celebrity homes sit on the marketplace for years.

The historic Lynnewood Hall is currently on the market for $11 million. It is also the largest home for sale in the United States.

The Neoclassical mansion has 110 rooms total, including 55 bedrooms and 20 bathrooms. At 70,000 square feet, it is over 15,000 square feet larger than the second largest home for sale in the US, a massive ranch and resort in Northern Michigan.

The massive structure was built between 1897 and 1900 for industrialist Peter A.B. Widener and has remained empty for over a decade.

According to the estate's Zillow listing, "Lynnewood Hall is one of the largest surviving Gilded age mansions in the Philadelphia area."

Potential uses for the colossal mansion include a boutique hotel with five-star restaurants, an art museum, a music venue, or a refurbished private estate.

In addition to the hefty price tag, estimated renovations to the historic hall will also cost the new owner millions.

According to listing agent Frank Johnson, renovations could cost "as little as $3 million to $7 million." However, a historian estimated renovations will cost $50 million to transform the abandoned mansion.

Unlike Lynnewood Hall's long history, the Stone Mansion in Alpine, New Jersey, was put up for sale before its residents-to-be even moved in.

Richard Kurtz, CEO of developer Kamson Corporation, purchased the former estate of Henry Clay Frick II, which he later subdivided into separate luxury lots. After commissioning the large stone mansion on six acres of property — intended as a personal residence — Kurtz and his wife abandoned the project as they separated before its completion.

Since then, the mansion has been manned by staff in order to keep it ready for purchase. Otherwise, the house has been empty for over eight years.

"The home's never been lived in," listing agent Dennis McCormack told Realtor.com.

Despite its lack of residents, the home is used as an event space while realtors continue to search for a new owner.

The 12-bedroom, 15-bathroom home is only eight miles from Manhattan and is currently listed for $36 million with Sotheby's International Realty.

The home also features a pool house with its own kitchen, along with a heated driveway and a tennis court. The mansion has 42 rooms total, including a ballroom with gilded moldings.

On Carleton Island in upstate New York, an abandoned mansion known as the Carleton Island Villa sits in ruins.

The 15,000-square-foot home once had 11 finished bedrooms. According to the property's listing, "around the World War Era, contractors were allowed to go in and remove the interior and the doors and windows leaving the Villa to the elements."

Though it's listed for only $495,000, renovations that would accompany the purchase are estimated to cost anywhere between $11 million and $12 million.

While the stone foundation remains somewhat intact, the roof has collapsed and the wood frame upper floors have deteriorated.

The home, which sits on waterfront property, has not been occupied in almost 70 years.

The new owner of the 6.9-acre purchase would have access to three waterfronts on the property. The island — located on the St. Lawrence River — is only accessible by boat.

Meanwhile, in New York City, a luxury townhouse dubbed "Versailles in Manhattan" has been on and off the market for 16 years.

Now listed for $19.75 million, the home once had an asking price as high as $35 million in 2007. This represents a $15.25 million price drop over the course of 12 years.

The home features unique Versailles-inspired architecture, but has been deemed "unsellable" due to its "museum-like quality."

Business Insider's Hillary Hoffower previously reported how no one wants to buy the townhome. While the property has been praised as an "architectural masterpiece," its "museum-like grandeur" is just one of the contributing factors it has been labeled hard-to-sell.

In addition to its five bedroom suites and eight marble bathrooms, the townhouse includes a rooftop terrace for outdoor entertaining.

The home features 15 rooms total, including an English pine library dating back to 1872, a formal dining room, a temperature-controlled wine cellar, and a bar area.

Hoffower reported, "Despite all the grandeur, the lavish spread may not appeal to buyers seeking a more modern look."

Finally, a luxury home in Los Angeles' Bel Air neighborhood still remains on the market despite several significant price cuts over the past few years.

Business Insider's Katie Warren previously reported that the mansion — despite receiving a $100 million price cut — still won't sell. Previous reporting from Business Insider's Dennis Green shows the property initially received a $62 million price cut in 2018.

The 38,000-square-foot home, nicknamed "Billionaire," includes a variety of personalized amenities like other luxury properties of its size.

The 12-bedroom, 21-bath home includes two master suites and 10 VIP guest suites. Additionally, the mansion features an indoor bowling alley, a 40-seat movie theater, five bars, and two wine cellars.

In addition to the spacious indoor areas, the home boasts 17,000 square feet of outdoor entertaining decks.

Downstairs, the home features a luxury car gallery complete with vehicles worth $30 million in total. Outdoor spaces also include an 85-foot infinity pool.

A look inside multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein's real-estate portfolio, where sex trafficking reportedly took place and a $77 million Manhattan mansion may have been acquired for $0

jeffrey epstein

Though Jeffrey Epstein went to great lengths to keep his life private, one thing he couldn't keep under wraps was his expensive real-estate portfolio.

Epstein's real estate has played a major role in the ongoing sex-trafficking and sexual-abuse allegations against him. He was arrested on July 6, 2019 on suspicion of sex trafficking minors in his Manhattan and Florida homes from 2002 to 2005. The arrest comes over a decade after Epstein pleaded guilty to solicitation of prostitution and procurement of minors for prostitution and served 13 months in prison.

The sexual abuse is said to have taken place in Epstein's homes in New York, New Mexico, the US Virgin Islands, and Paris, France

To the public's knowledge, he owns six luxury residential properties: a multimillion-dollar mansion in Manhattan, two private islands in the US Virgin Islands, a home in Palm Beach, Florida, a ranch in New Mexico, and an apartment in Paris, France.

DON'T MISS: Meet Jeffrey Epstein, the financier reportedly arrested on suspicion of sex trafficking who's rubbed elbows with Donald Trump, Bill Clinton, and Kevin Spacey

The $77 million Manhattan mansion, which may have been acquired for $0

Epstein's seven-story mansion on 9 East 71st Street is proving to be just as mysterious as the multimillionaire himself.

Business Insider's Benjamin Goggin previously reported that the details of how Epstein came to own the home aren't entirely clear. However, there was some sort of transaction between him and his client Les Wexner in 1995. Public records show that in 2011, ownership of the property was transferred to Maple Inc., a company controlled by Epstein. Documents indicate that Maple acquired that property for $0.

While there aren't many photos of the inside, in 2003, Epstein allowed a reporter from Vanity Fair to visit the home. The interior was described by Vicky Ward as a "high-walled, eclectic, imperious fantasy that seems to have no boundaries." Decorations throughout the home included framed eyeballs made for injured soldiers and a stuffed black poodle. In 1996, the New York Times reported that Bill Cosby, who is also a convicted sex offender, owned a home across the street.

Epstein is accused of luring young girls to this Manhattan mansion and sexually abusing them. According to the New York Times, the minors gave Epstein naked massages and engaged in sex acts with him.

Prosecutors are now fighting to force Epstein to forfeit the Manhattan mansion which is believed to be valued at over $77 million.

The 70-acre private island in the US Virgin Islands

According to Time, Epstein has owned the private island Little Saint James for over 20 years. It is believed to be his primary residence.

The 70-acre island, which Epstein calls "Little St. Jeff's," sits off the coast of St. Thomas and includes five structures: a villa-style compound, library, cinema, detached bathhouse, and cabanas.

St. Thomas is the base location of the Jeffrey Epstein VI Foundation. According to JeffreyEpstein.org, the foundation began in 2000 and has given $35 million to Harvard, kickstarting the university's Program for Evolutionary Dynamics. The foundation has also supported scientists including Stephen Hawkings, Martin Nowak, Gregory Benford, and Marvin Minsky.

The 165-acre private island in the US Virgin Islands

In 2016, Epstein reportedly purchased Great St. James, another private island in the US Virgin Islands, for $18 million.

According to New York Magazine, Epstein planned to build a compound on the island but was issued a stop-work order in December of 2018 for not obeying environmental regulations.

The $12 million waterfront estate in Palm Beach, Florida that was reportedly purchased for $2.5 million and was where much of the alleged sex acts took place

Epstein's Palm Beach estate is estimated to be worth over $12 million. According to a local report, he purchased the property in 1990 for $2.5 million.

The Palm Beach home is where a lot of the abuse is alleged to have taken place. According to the Miami Herald, in 2007, Epstein was accused of engaging in sex acts with underage girls as often as three times a day in the home.

The Zorro Ranch in Stanley, New Mexico with a 26,700-square-foot mansion that was reportedly the largest in the county

Epstein purchased the Zorro Ranch in 1993 from former New Mexico Governor Bruce King. On the 7,500 acre property, he built a 26,700-square-foot mansion. According to Curbed, it was appraised at over $18 million in 2013.

According to a local report, at the time the mansion was built it was double the size of the second-largest home in the county.  Epstein told Vanity Fair, that his property in New Mexico made his Manhattan townhouse "look like a shack."

The mystery apartment in Paris, France

According to Curbed, the apartment Epstein owns in Paris is on the famous Avenue Foch. While there is little information about the apartment, The Real Deal reports that homes on the avenue can sell for over $4 million.

  • Twitter makes it quick and easy to post videos within your tweets, allowing you to share all sorts of unique media with your followers.
  • You can upload videos to tweets on Twitter from your computer or phone, or you can use a link from a site like YouTube to directly embed videos.
  • Posting videos on Twitter allows you to share more content than you could through a text-based tweet with the platform's 280 character limit.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

When Twitter was first launched in 2006, the short-form social media post company limited each user's post, or "tweet," to 140 characters, with spaces included in that count.

In the fall of 2017, the company doubled the per-tweet character count to 280, but even these longer posts can still necessitate brevity or a message broken up over the course of a number of separate tweets.

Sharing a video on Twitter allows you to post much more content than you could in character-limited posts. You could record yourself sharing a long message and tweet the video along with a pithy post, effectively increasing the amount of content you share. Or you can upload that amazing video of your cat or your panoramic sweep of the scenery at Machu Pichu.

You can also directly embed videos from platforms like YouTube into a tweet simply by copying URLs, so sharing video via Twitter can be as easy as a copy and paste.

How to post a video to Twitter from your computer

1. Log into your account and click the "What's happening?" bar near your profile photo to compose a new tweet.

2. At the bottom left of the popup tweet window, hit the icon that looks like a pair of mountains – it will read "Add photos or video" as your cursor hovers over it, or it will appear as the plain icon if you have the recent update of Twitter's desktop version.

twitter

3. Select the video you wish to upload from your computer.

4. Add any text you want to tweet with the clip, and hit "tweet."

How to post a video to Twitter from your mobile device

1. Once logged into your Twitter account on mobile, hit the quill icon in the bottom left corner of the screen to compose a tweet.

2. On the next window, hit the mountain icon at the bottom left of the text window.

3. Record a video or select one from your phone. You may need to enable Twitter's access to your Camera or Photos app, which you can do via the Twitter tab on the main page of your phone's Settings app.

4. Add text, then hit "tweet."

How to embed YouTube and other video in a tweet

1. Copy and paste the URL of the video you wish to tweet from the platform that's hosting the video.

2. Paste the URL into a tweet – watch the character limit, as an incomplete link won't work.

3. Add text as wanted, then tweet away.

Bernie Madoff

  • Once some of the richest people in the world, these billionaires were all broke or declared bankruptcy at one point in their lives.
  • Former billionaires Bernie Madoff, Allen Stanford, and Eike Batista have all served jail time for financial-related crimes, while others lost their fortunes due to other circumstances.
  • We rounded up 10 famous billionaires who went broke or declared bankruptcy, plus the wild stories of how they lost it all or how their companies went under.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Some of the most well-known billionaires have declared bankruptcy at some point in their lives, either personally or on their companies. Other wealthy billionaires have claimed to be completely broke.

Many factors contributed to these wealthy people losing it all — economic downturns, bad investments, and even massive fraud cases that landed them in hot water, to name a few. Some of these billionaires have returned to prominence and are just as rich as they once were. However, others failed to regain much, if any, of the wealth they once had.

Patricia Kluge invested a great deal of her high-profile divorce settlement money into her own vineyard. However, when the housing market crashed, she lost it all — and even had to sell her jewelry and pieces of art at auction.

Patricia Kluge lived the epitome of high-society life prior to losing it all during the housing market crisis of 2008. A former heiress and model, Kluge met her second husband, John W. Kluge, on a trip to New York City. Worth $5 billion and ranked as Forbes' richest man in the US, John W. Kluge married Patricia in 1981.

Nine years later, the couple divorced and Patricia Kluge received a hefty settlement to the tune of $1 million a year, plus the couple's sprawling Albemarle estate. Located in the Virginian countryside not far from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello property, Albemarle would lead to the rise and plummeting fall of Patricia Kluge's wealth.

Intending to turn her property into a profitable business, Kluge opened the Kluge Estate Winery and Vineyard on 960 acres of land near Albemarle with her third husband, William "Bill" Moses. She saw a brief bout of success as the estate's wines graced the tables of socialites and prominent people across the country. The Kluge's wines were even served at Chelsea Clinton's wedding.

However, after a series of poor investments and pouring money into her estate right before the housing market crashed, Kluge lost it all. In 2011, the Albemarle winery was bought by Donald Trump for a fraction of what it was worth after being seized by Bank of America.

Kluge held an auction of all her fine jewelry and other spoils of wealth to try and save herself from bankruptcy. It didn't work — Patricia Kluge filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in June 2011.

Airline and liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya lost most of his fortune after defaulting on bank loans and fleeing to the UK. He is now in the process of being extradited back to India to be charged with fraud and money laundering.

Former-billionaire Vijay Mallya was a prominent liquor tycoon known for his extravagant partying and high-flyer lifestyle. He also owned the now-defunct Indian airline company Kingfisher Airlines. Beginning in 2012, it was revealed that Mallya had racked up numerous debts to banks in trying to keep his airline business afloat.

When he defaulted on payments, the Indian banks he had borrowed money from came looking for him. Using a diplomatic passport he had attained through becoming a member of the Upper House of Parliament in India, he fled from India to the UK. Mallya has yet to return to India, though the government and banks are trying to extradite him to pursue legal action.

According to Business Standard, the businessman is being charged with alleged "bank fraud and money laundering charges amounting to an estimated Rs 90 billion," approximately $1.3 billion. Vijay Mallya's net worth was greatly reduced after a bankruptcy petition was used to recover 1.145 billion pounds in owed funds

Sean Quinn was once the richest man in Ireland before he lost it all. Due to bad investments in an Irish bank, Quinn was forced to hand over most of his $2.8 billion fortune. In November 2011, Quinn claimed his assets to be less than 50,000 pounds when he applied for bankruptcy.

Sean Quinn acquired a great deal of success through his investments in industries such as plastic, glass, and hotels. He also held a 25% stake in Anglo Irish Bank, which had to be bailed out by taxpayers during the 2008 financial crisis. The bank was taken over by the government, and thus began a series of legal troubles between the Quinn family and the bank.

Once considered to be the richest man in Ireland, Sean Quinn lost a majority of his $2.8 billion fortune. At one point, the Irish Banking Resolution Corporation, which took over Anglo Irish Bank, claimed Quinn owed the bank more than two billion euros.

Soon after, he was charged with contempt of court for attempting to hide his property assets from the bank in an effort to avoid paying back his debts. Financial Times reports that in November 2011, Quinn claimed his assets to be less than 50,000 pounds and that he had applied for bankruptcy.

Jocelyn Wildenstein, dubbed as "Catwoman" by multiple New York City tabloids for her notably "feline" appearance, was rumored to spend $1 million a month on lavish purchases and a $5,000 a month phone bill. In May 2018, the socialite declared total bankruptcy, saying she had $0 in her checking account.

Once worth billions, Jocelyn Wildenstein is now worth much less now, according to Money. In May 2018, the socialite and former wife of late billionaire art dealer Alec Wildenstein filed for federal Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The New York Post reports that, in the filing, she claimed her monthly income was $0, and that she survived on $900 Social Security payments and assistance from her friends and family.

Much of her financial troubles, she claims, are from a faulty divorce settlement. Despite spending most of her alleged $2.5 billion she received in the divorce, Wildenstein told The New York Post that she was promised much more. She was given two paintings in the settlement, one by Diego Velázquez that turned out to be a forgery and another by Cézanne that sold for a fraction of what it was originally appraised at. Now, the former billionaire tells The New York Post she is on the lookout for a "top lawyer" to get her everything she feels she is "supposed to have for [her] lifetime."

Bernard "Bernie" Madoff holds the infamous title of orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in US history. His investors' losses accumulated to about $65 billion and went undetected for decades. In 2008, Madoff was charged with 11 counts of fraud, money laundering, perjury, and theft. He received a maximum sentence of 150 years in federal prison.

Bernie Madoff is widely known as the orchestrator of the largest Ponzi scheme in US history. A financial industry veteran, Madoff flew under the radar for decades before his eventual demise in December 2008. Prior to the scandal, he and his wife had a personal net worth between $823 million and $826 million. Now, he's broke and serving a life sentence.

How did he get away with it for so long? Madoff appeared trustworthy — he had started his Wall Street firm, Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC, in 1960, and had served as a former chairman of NASDAQ.

His gigantic Ponzi scheme began to unwind after investors requested a total of $7 billion in returns. At the time, Madoff only had $200 million to $300 million left to give, according to a previous report by Business Insider. Madoff reportedly conned his list of investors out of a whopping $65 billion. Madoff only ended up with about $20 billion from his various investors, however, at the height of the scheme. He was tried by the Department of Justice for 11 counts of fraud, money laundering, perjury, and theft.

Bernie Madoff received a maximum sentence of 150 years in federal prison. Before going to prison, Madoff relinquished most of his assets in a deal with the prosecutors. In exchange for Madoff giving up most of his wealth — an estimated $80 million worth of "mansions, jewelry, cars, and art" — his wife, Ruth Madoff, was given $2.5 million. She has since moved to Old Greenwich, Connecticut.

Elizabeth Holmes was once a Silicon Valley star on the rise with a net worth of $5 billion. Her blood-testing company, Theranos, was valued at $9 billion. It would soon come out, however, that Theranos' blood tests were highly inaccurate. Holmes was charged with wire fraud in June 2018 and has a current net worth of $0.

Elizabeth Holmes was once lauded as a star on the rise in Silicon Valley. Her blood-testing startup company, Theranos, gained attention in the early 2000s as an exciting investment opportunity. The company promised to revolutionize the way patients are tested and treated for various diseases and illnesses. By the end of 2004, the company had raised roughly $6 million from private investors, some of whom had strong personal connections to Holmes.

However, as the buzz grew around Theranos, so did speculation about the new company's practices and regulations. In 2012, after Holmes tried to get Lieutenant Colonel David Shoemaker to sign off on a test run in the military, he raised his concerns with the FDA. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) then performed an inspection of the company. They were told that "the device was still under development."

Tension was mounting at Theranos and, despite one FDA approval, news outlets were investigating its validity. By November 2015, Theranos had lost its two major partnerships with Safeway and Walgreens. By early 2016, CMS had concluded Theranos' testing might pose a safety risk to patients. Multiple lawsuits, layoffs, and a federal claim that Holmes had conducted "massive fraud" later, Theranos closed its doors in September 2018, narrowly avoiding bankruptcy. Holmes and partner Sunny Balwani are currently being charged with wire fraud by the Department of Justice. The trial is set to begin in August 2020. Forbes currently lists Holmes' personal net worth at $0.

Björgólfur Gudmundsson was once the second-richest man in Iceland and a major stakeholder in the Icelandic bank Landsbanki. After the bank went under in October 2008, Forbes revised Gudmundsson net worth from $1.2 billion to $0 when the billionaire declared bankruptcy.

Icelandic tycoon Björgólfur Gudmundsson made his fortune in the brewing industry. He also served as owner of UK football team West Ham.

However, in 2009, the man who was once the second-richest man in Iceland filed for bankruptcy. His bankruptcy protection filing covered a massive $759 million in debt

At the time, it was the largest bankruptcy filing in Icelandic history.

Much of the reason behind Gudmundsson's fall from grace was a result of the plummeting Icelandic economy during the recession. Gudmundsson and his son, Bjorgolfur "Thor" Gudmundsson, were both major shareholders in Icelandic bank Landsbanki, which went under in October 2008.

In December of that same year, Forbes revised Gudmundsson net worth from $1.2 billion to $0 when the billionaire declared bankruptcy. His son, Björgólfur Thor, dropped down the Forbes list, and then eventually dropped off completely. However, he has since gained back a great deal of his wealth, in what Forbes referred to as a "crazy comeback."

Once Brazil's richest man with a net worth of $30 billion, Eike Batista lost a majority of his wealth when his oil company OGX went bankrupt in 2013. In July 2018, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for bribing former Rio de Janeiro governor Sergio Cabral.

Eike Batista once had dreams of becoming the world's richest man. Those aspirations came crashing down, however, when his once-booming oil company OGX went bankrupt in 2013.

The self-made billionaire had been widely known for his lavish lifestyle and became an inspiration for younger Brazilian generations, according to BBC. In 2012, Batista was worth an estimated $30 billion, making him the seventh richest man in the world.

But when Batista's oil company failed to meet demands and Brazil's economy slid into a decline, he was forced to file for bankruptcy in 2013. As authorities began investigating Brazil's top companies and why they had declined so quickly, they charged Eike Batista with money laundering and corruption in late January 2017. In July 2018, he was sentenced to 30 years in prison for bribing former Rio de Janeiro governor Sergio Cabral.

Allen Stanford is currently serving a 110-year sentence in federal prison for running the second-largest Ponzi scheme in US history. The scheme culminated in investor losses totaling $7 billion, and many of Stanford's victims have yet to be returned any of the money they lost.

Leader of the second-biggest investor fraud case in US history, Allen Stanford is notorious for his shady business dealings and for conning more than 18,000 customers out of their money. Unlike the victims of Bernie Madoff, many of Stanford's victims have yet to receive compensation for the crimes committed against them.

Stanford's crimes began after a Texas fitness club he owned went bankrupt— he then turned to offshore banking and began operating his scheme. According to CNBC, many of Stanford's victims were retirees who were promised "safe investments," making this case of investor fraud even more nefarious.

When the SEC raided Stanford Financial Group's Houston headquarters on February 17, 2009, they charged the magnate and his associates of running a "massive, ongoing fraud," CNBC reported. The investigation alleged that Stanford had been conning investors in order to fund his lavish lifestyle. Holding the title of the second-largest Ponzi scheme in US history, the Stanford scheme culminated in $7 billion in losses for investors.

Stanford was convicted on 13 felony counts in 2012 and is currently serving a 110-year sentence at a high-security prison in Florida, CNBC reported. The consequences of his crimes live on, however, as his victims continue to suffer from the millions of dollars they lost during the years the scheme was operating. Forbes currently lists Stanford's net worth at $0.

President Donald Trump has never declared bankruptcy personally, but six of his companies have filed for bankruptcy protections.

President Donald Trump is no stranger to bankruptcy. Though Trump himself has never declared bankruptcy, the businessman-turned-politician has declared bankruptcy on quite a few of his numerous companies.

Trump's Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City declared bankruptcy in 1991 after "default[ing] on interest payments to bondholders as his finances went into a tailspin," The Washington Post's Robert O'Harrow wrote. Two other Trump casinos have similarly declared bankruptcy, along with the Plaza Hotel in New York.

PolitiFact also discovered two previously unknown bankruptcies filed by Trump — one for Trump Hotels and Casinos Resorts in 2004, which had gone into $1.8 billion in debt, and another for Trump Entertainment Resorts in 2009.

President Trump doesn't seem to be bothered by his lengthy history of bankruptcies, however. In a 2016 Republican presidential debate, Trump was asked why he could be trusted to "run the country's business" following his string of bankruptcies.

He responded, saying, "I have used the laws of this country — just like the greatest people that you read about every day in business have used the laws of this country, the chapter laws, to do a great job for my company, for myself, for my employees, for my family, et cetera."

How to stop iCloud storage alerts on your iPhone in 5 easy ways

0
0

using smartphone iphone

When it comes to iCloud storage, Apple isn't especially generous.

You get 5GB for free with a new iPhone, which can run out very quickly, after which you'll start to see the "Not Enough Storage" message. Here are the easiest ways to make that message stop.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone Xs (From $999 at Apple)

iPad (From $329 at Apple)

How to stop iCloud alerts on the iPhone

There are five easy ways to eliminate the Not Enough Storage message, from changing how you backup photos to buying more iCloud storage.

Delete iCloud backups to save space

iCloud tends to hang on to old backups, often long after you have any need for them. If you have upgraded your iPhone or iPad in the past, you might still have backups for a device you no longer own. Deleting the backups for that device is a fast way to reclaim valuable space.

1. Start the Settings app.

2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.

icloud 1

3. Tap "iCloud."

4. Tap "Manage Storage."

5. Tap "Backups."

icloud 2

6. On the Info page, you'll see a list of all the devices with saved backups. If you see a device you no longer need, tap it and then tap "Delete Backup."

Stop backing up data you don't need

Do you really need to back up your games? Are there other memory-intensive apps you don't really need to back up to iCloud? Your iPhone lets you choose which apps get backed up each day — you can simply turn off the backup for ones you don't need backed up.

1. Start the Settings app.

2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.

3. Tap "iCloud."

4. In the Apps Using iCloud section, turn off the backup for an app by swiping its button to the left.

icloud 3

Use My Photo Stream instead of iCloud

Often, your photo collection will tend to be the biggest drain on your iCloud storage. There is an alternative: You can turn off iCloud for your photos, and use My Photo Stream instead.

My Photo Stream uploads the most recent 30 days of photos (up to 1000 photos in total) so you can view them on all of your devices. But it doesn't affect your iCloud storage at all. The downside, of course, is that you don't have a permanent cloud backup of your photos with this method.

1. Start the Settings app.

2. Tap your name at the top of the screen.

3. Tap "iCloud."

4. Tap "Photos."

5. On the Photos page, turn off "iCloud Photos" by swiping the button to the left.

icloud 4

6. Turn on "Upload to My Photo Stream" by swiping the button to the right.

Upload photos to another cloud service instead of iCloud

Another alternative for preserving your photos is to use a cloud service like Google Photos, Dropbox, or OneDrive instead of iCloud. All of these services have iOS apps which can be set to automatically upload photos and videos to your cloud account.

After you install one (or more) of these apps and turn on automatic photo backup in the app's settings, you can turn off photo backup to iCloud using the steps outlined in the previous section on using My Photo Stream.

To read more about managing your photos and iCloud storage, read our article, "How to delete your iPhone without deleting them from iCloud.

Buy more iCloud storage

Of course, one way to eliminate iCloud storage alerts is to actually purchase more storage space. You can add additional space to your iCloud account for as little as a dollar a month.

Fore more details on how to upgrade your iCloud storage, see our article, "How to buy more iCloud storage for your iPhone, and what you'll pay for each plan."

The famous connections of Jeffrey Epstein, the elite wealth manager charged with sex trafficking young girls

Former hedge-fund manager and registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein may have kept his client list under wraps, but he didn't do the same with a social circle that included presidents and Hollywood stars.

Epstein, who ran a business out of the US Virgin Islands, was known for jetsetting with the likes of former President Bill Clinton, and Prince Andrew (the third child of the UK's Queen Elizabeth).

"I invest in people — be it politics or science," Epstein was known to say, according to New York Magazine. "It's what I do."

According to a July 22 article from NY Magazine's Intelligencer, a number of royals and royal connections were among Epstein's contacts. That includes Prince Andrew; Prince Andrew's then-wife, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York; and Charles Althorp, Princess Diana's brother. According to Intelligencer, all three were named in Epstein's black book; Ferguson and Prince Andrew were also named in his private jet log.

Epstein, 66, was arrested on charges of sex trafficking of minors on July 6 shortly after exiting his private jet in New Jersey. He pleaded not guilty on July 8 and is being held without bail, INSIDER previously reported. However, Epstein pleaded guilty in 2007 to charges of solicitation of prostitution and procurement of minors for prostitution in Florida.

President Donald Trump once considered Epstein a friend.

The future president claimed in 2002 that he had a long friendship with Epstein. "I've known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy," Trump said, according to New York Magazine. "He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side. No doubt about it — Jeffrey enjoys his social life."

According to Counselor to the President Kellyanne Conway, Trump now believes the crimes Epstein was charged with are "completely unconscionable and obviously criminal." She also labeled them "disgusting," according to a report from the Associated Press.

"The president told me this morning he hasn't talked to Epstein, he doesn't think he's talked to him or seen him in 10 or 15 years," Conway added.

Former President Bill Clinton traveled with Epstein in 2002 and 2003.

A statement released by Clinton spokesperson Angel Ureña said the former President traveled to Europe, Asia, and twice to Africa on Epstein's private jet. Clinton's staff and Secret Service agents also went on these trips, which were to further the work of the Clinton Foundation, according to the statement.

At the time, Clinton told New York Magazine through a spokesperson that Epstein was a "both a highly successful financier and a committed philanthropist with a keen sense of global markets and an in-depth knowledge of twenty-first-century science."

Ureña also said that Clinton and Epstein haven't spoken in "well over a decade" and that Clinton "knows nothing about the terrible crimes" Epstein was charged with.

Actor Kevin Spacey and comedian Chris Tucker also took trips with Epstein.

Epstein, Clinton, Spacey, and Tucker spent a week in 2002 touring AIDS project sites in South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Rwanda, and Mozambique for the Clinton Foundation, according to a New York Magazine report.

Spacey has also been charged with sexual assault, although the case may be dismissed, according to The New York Times.

Socialite Ghislaine Maxwell is Epstein's ex-girlfriend — and alleged madam.

Maxwell, 57, is a British socialite and the daughter of media tycoon Robert Maxwell.

She started dating Epstein shortly after moving to New York in 1991, Business Insider previously reported. After they broke up, court documents allege that Maxwell started recruiting underage girls for him to have sex with.

Prince Andrew and Epstein were close friends, the Guardian reported in 2015.

Maxwell introduced Epstein and the Duke of York in the 1990s, the Guardian reported, and the two became close friends.

The Duke is the son of the UK's Queen Elizabeth. He has also been criticized for frequently taking flights on the taxpayer's dime while serving as the country's special representative for international trade. This earned him the nickname "Airmiles Andy," according to the Washington Post.

Court documents reviewed by the Guardian allege that Epstein instructed Virginia Roberts Giuffre, a 15-year-old employee at Trump's Mar-a-Largo resort, to have sex with Prince Andrew on three separate occasions.

Buckingham Palace said in 2015 that the allegations against Prince Andrew were "false and without any foundation," according to the Guardian

L Brands CEO Les Wexner is Epstein's only confirmed client.

Epstein became a trusted confidant of Wexner's while Epstein managed the CEO's fortune, according to Vanity Fair. Wexner has a net worth of $6.7 billion, Bloomberg reports. The magazine reported that Wexner allowed Epstein to take an active role in L Brands, which owns Bath & Body Works, Express, and Victoria's Secret.

In 1989, Wexner used a trust to buy an Upper East Side townhouse that is believed to be the largest private residence in Manhattan for $13.2 million, Vanity Fair reported. Epstein moved in after Wexner and his wife, Abigail Koppel, moved to Ohio in 1996. Wexner's trust transferred ownership of the house to Epstein in 2011 for $0, Bloomberg reported.

Wexner later fired Epstein as his money manager. "Mr. Wexner severed ties with Mr. Epstein more than a decade ago," an L Brands spokesperson told Forbes

US Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta worked with Epstein's legal team to arrange a plea deal after Epstein was charged with solicitation of prostitution and procurement of minors for prostitution in Florida in 2007.

An investigation by the Miami Herald revealed that Acosta, then a US attorney, had enough evidence against Epstein to request a life sentence. Instead, he reportedly met with one of Epstein's lawyers, who happened to be a former colleague of Acosta's. In the resulting plea deal, Epstein served 13 months in a private wing of a county prison, which he was allowed to leave six days a week to work in his office.

Business Insider previously reported that Acosta said he was "pleased that NY prosecutors are moving forward with a case based on new evidence," on Twitter.

Acosta resigned on July 12, Business Insider reported.

Film publicist Peggy Siegal planned a star-studded dinner party for Epstein and Prince Andrew at Epstein's New York mansion in 2010.

Siegal, known for hosting events to promote films including "The Big Short," "Argo," and "The Revenant" to Oscar voters, invited Epstein to screenings after he was released from prison in 2010, according to The New York Times.

"I was a kind of plugged-in girl around town who knew a lot of people," Siegal told The New York Times. "And I think that's what he wanted from me, a kind of social goings-on about New York."

Siegal also planned a dinner party for Epstein and Prince Andrew at his Upper East Side home. The event was attended by Katie Couric, George Stephanopoulos, and Chelsea Handler. "The invitation was positioned as, 'Do you want to have dinner with Prince Andrew?'" Ms. Siegal said. Many of the guests didn't know who the host was or about his criminal history, The New York Times reported.

A spokesperson for Siegal told Business Insider that Siegal's relationship with Epstein was social, not professional. Siegal told The New York Times that she ended her relationship with Epstein at the height of the #MeToo era in 2017.

San Francisco’s housing market is so dire that tech workers are spending over $2,000 a month to rent rooms in vacant Victorian homes

bungalow co living company san francisco 32

  • The city of San Francisco has its hands full at the moment.
  • It's overpopulated, with a still-burgeoning tech workforce, a homelessness crisis, income inequality, and a desperate housing shortage.
  • Developing new properties in San Francisco from the ground up is like pulling teeth for a number of reasons— high construction costs, strict zoning laws, building regulations, and delayed financing, to name a few.
  • So the co-living company Bungalow hunts down unused single-family homes with at least three bedrooms, leases them from their owners, outfits them with modern furnishings, and then fills them with roommates for anywhere from $1,500 to $1,800 a month, at least in the Bay Area, plus a $150 monthly membership fee.
  • And in a city struggling to house its occupants, that's likely a welcome feat.
  • Here's how Bungalow is housing the city's workforce.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

SEE ALSO: San Francisco's housing market is so dire that this once tiny home built out of desperation after the 1906 earthquake for $50 is now selling for $2.5 million. Take a look inside.

Chris Prinz, 23, recently moved to San Francisco from Houston, Texas, to take a job as a data scientist.

Between accepting the job and his start date, Prinz had about three weeks to scour Bay Area housing options and transplant his life from Texas to California.

He stumbled upon a co-living company called Bungalow. Among the options listed through it, he zeroed in on a $1,750 room in a furnished five-bedroom, two-bathroom Victorian home in San Francisco's Mission neighborhood.

"From all the horror stories I've heard, this is really affordable for what we're getting," Prinz said.

Prinz's new-to-him Mission home is one of 10 Bungalow properties scattered throughout San Francisco. The company has been operating in neighboring areas like Oakland for quite some time, as well as in other major US cities like New York and Los Angeles.

But the co-living company just launched in San Francisco, a city racked by overpopulation, an ever-growing tech boom, a cavernous wealth divide, and a worsening housing shortage.

Source:TechCrunch

And though co-living is hardly a new concept in San Francisco, there is something about Bungalow that makes it a harmonious match for the city.

That's because Bungalow taps into the city's underutilized housing inventory.

The company hunts down unused single-family homes with at least three bedrooms, leases them from their owners, outfits them with modern furnishings, and then fills them with roommates for anywhere from $1,500 to $1,800 a month — at least in the Bay Area — plus a $150 monthly membership fee.

For many, those rates may be wildly out of budget, especially for sharing your living space with more than three other people. It's a far cry from what comes to mind when you think of communal living circa the 1970s, where participants lived among tens, sometimes hundreds, of others and had very few expenses.

Source: The Guardian

But in a city struggling to house its inhabitants, Bungalow's presence is still likely welcome — at least for those who can afford it.

"By moving into existing homes, we're able to bring on a lot more efficient, a lot more affordable housing inventory today" instead of limping through the usually long and arduous development process, Bungalow CEO Andrews Collins told Business Insider.

There are an estimated 100,000 vacant homes within the San Francisco metro area, according to a 2019 Lending Tree report.

Source:SF Gate

In San Francisco, the predominant inventory type that Bungalow is looking at is single-family homes, with most of them sporting the city's signature Victorian influence, Collins said.

But "they're somewhat challenging for homeowners to rent out," Collins said.

For decades, the average family size in the US has shrunk, and San Francisco specifically has the lowest percentage of kids of any major city in the US.

Source:City Lab andThe New York Times

That means that large, single-family homes sporting three to five bedrooms are largely undesirable in the bay city, Collins said.

And that unneeded space could come in handy, since co-living has been increasingly popular in San Francisco. Rising housing prices and a ballooning workforce requires the city to experiment with how it solves the housing shortage.

Source:Vox

Pratik Bhatia, age 28, is Prinz's roommate. Bhatia lived in New York for five years before moving to San Francisco for a software engineer position.

Among the living arrangements that he was scanning in the city was a studio apartment in the Russian Hill neighborhood. Rent was $2,200.

Bhatia told Business Insider that he pays $1,900 a month for his Bungalow home, which includes an extra monthly fee that locks him in for a six-month lease, shorter than Bungalow's standard 12-month lease.

Both Bhatia and Prinz said their applications were approved in 24 hours, and they were able to move in within days after background checks and roommate-to-roommate interviews were completed.

They're the only two roommates in their new home at the moment, but more will move into the other three bedrooms, some of which are on the second floor of the house.

Besides the kitchen, there's a living room that serves as a common area. Collins said that when the company is searching for properties, communal space is a must.

That's common in co-living in general. In many ways, co-living is a built-in way to counteract social isolation that can accompany millennial workers, especially in tech.

Source:Vox

Bungalow has all the other features of a co-living arrangement, like Bungalow-hosted happy hours and surfing clubs, for example. And that $150 membership fee includes special events, as well as utilities, Wi-Fi, water, and a monthly cleaning service.

Everything except the individual rooms is furnished.

Bhatia's room didn't come with a closet, so he bought an armoire of sorts. It's still leaning against his wall, unopened.

Like in Bhatia's room, big bay windows — a staple feature in San Francisco's architecture — line the front of Prinz's room.

There's also a lofted bed accessible by a short ladder. Prinz said the room came with it when he moved in.

Just five days in, Prinz already set up an art gallery wall. He said he might add some shelves beneath it. Prinz said his new home is nothing like what was available to him back in Texas.

"I would say Austin [and] Houston housing is very luxury-apartment-based," Prinz said. "They're kind of just copy and pasted across and they all feel very similar to each other. This feels much more unique."

Bungalow isn't the only co-living company to repurpose existing buildings. Starcity, for example, buys old hotels and retail spaces and turns them into dorm-like housing.

Source:Business Insider

However, there are co-living companies in San Francisco that opt for new development rather than renting existing units. Starcity, for example, has plans to build some new housing from the ground up. One such property is slated to break ground in the city's SoMa neighborhood.

Source:Business Insider

But developing new buildings in San Francisco is notoriously difficult for a number of reasons — the city's zoning restrictions and land-use classifications can be roadblocks, for one.

Source: TechCrunch

Much of the city's housing consists of those beautiful historic Victorian homes built before 1940, and the city protects them from being torn down.

Source: Business Insider

And substantial say is given to individual neighborhoods, who often leap through hoops to prevent new development on their turf at all costs.

Source:San Francisco Examiner andTechCrunch

But the issue isn't as simple as placing the blame on building regulations — or even the tech invasion that's befallen the city.

Fernando Marti, co-director of San Francisco's Council of Community Housing Organizations, told Business Insider that San Francisco currently has 40,000 to 45,000 construction approvals, some of which have building permits that are just waiting for financing.

Source:San Francisco Examiner

"In that sense, zoning and planning approvals are not the thing holding back new housing from being built," Marti said. "It's the pace of financing."

Most of what is being built in San Francisco is over six stories high, Marti said. So there's a high-risk factor in investing, given the scope of these high-rise projects.

And despite the city's high living costs, Marti said rents may actually be stabilizing right now, in which case investors may be holding off on investing in new projects at the moment, since they're not seeing rents going up for these luxury units.

So with property development moving at a snail's pace, tapping into what already exists in the city, but isn't used, could be a clever shortcut.

Marti said he considers it a victory that Bungalow is finding a way to house people, but he said there could be some concerns about the company's model.

After the home-rental platform Airbnb landed in the city, people were taking their units off the market and renting precious housing to tourists instead of locals. Similarly, homeowners could now buy up housing stock with the purpose of renting them out to Bungalow.

Source:TechCrunch

Collins said that that's actually already happening. Some of the homeowners that work with Bungalow are buying more single-family homes solely to rent out to Bungalow, though these slots are going to locals, not tourists, so it's a little different.

Marti said homeowners could also benefit from working with Bungalow. Some San Francisco property owners are "overhoused" — they're retired but haven't sold their house and are just keeping it vacant while living elsewhere.

So there's an incentive for the owners of those existing homes to work with Bungalow, Marti said. The co-living company helps them manage their properties, taking on the regular maintenance of them and ensuring that rent is collected each month.

"Something like Bungalow gives the owner a sense of confidence that they have a more permanent renter in place," Marti said. "The owner doesn't have to deal with these roommates, they don't have to screen them. Bungalow is taking care of that."

So perhaps Bungalow is creating supply for workers looking for housing in San Francisco, but Maya Chupkov, communications manager at San Francisco Council of Community Housing Organizations, told Business Insider that co-living companies and other housing developers need to make sure that supply isn't just for the ultra-wealthy.

The city thought so too in 2017 when it adopted legislation that would require new developments with 25 housing units or more to make 20% of units affordable for lower-income tenants.

Source:SPUR

And though Collins said that following suit isn't a focus right now, he said it's not difficult to find affordable units on Bungalow in the first place. At the time of this writing, there was an $850 room in a seven-bedroom home in Cupertino, south of the city.

Source: Bungalow

But while that figure may be more affordable, there's a trade-off: you're sharing a home with six other people. And that $850 rate is not the norm in San Francisco, where the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment is $3,600 and the price range for luxury living sits at $3,157 to $6,812.

Source: Business Insider and CNBC

"It's an affordable supply issue, not just a supply issue," Chupkov said.

The 30 biggest population shifts in recent history

Pilgrims hold umbrellas during Mass in Romania, 2019.

  • INSIDER Data found the 30 countries and territories with the biggest population shifts since 1950.
  • The United Arab Emirates had the most population growth on average, while Niue had the least.
  • Many of the shifts were due to job booms and busts, refugee crises, and varying birth rates.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

When the global population hit 5 billion in 1987, the United Nations started World Population Day on July 11 to spotlight the growing number of people on the planet.

Today, there are 7.7 billion people in the world, and with refugee crises, wars, droughts, and changing work opportunities, populations in some countries are booming while others are shrinking.

By acknowledging the day, the UN hopes to mobilize political will and draw attention to population problems.

INSIDER Data found the 15 countries with the biggest population growth since 1950, and the 15 countries with the least population growth since 1950. Here are the results.

DON'T MISS: The 50 worst commutes in America, ranked

HIGHEST POPULATION GROWTH: 1. United Arab Emirates: 7.08% average growth since 1950

The United Arab Emirates has such high growth because of its oil reserves, creating a boom for the country, as well as because it allows any expatriate to apply for citizenship after living there for 20 years, as long as they haven't committed a crime and can speak Arabic. It's worth noting that growth soared here in the 1970s and 2000s, but has been much slower in the last decade.

2. Qatar: 6.78% average growth since 1950

One of the reasons Qatar sits at No. 2 is due to the explosion of workers who immigrated mostly to help with building infrastructure for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which was announced in 2010. The population was less than 700,000 in 2003 and at about 2.5 million in 2016, BBC reported.

3. Western Sahara: 5.39% average growth since 1950

This disputed area in northwest Africa has had high population change due to a large number of people living as displaced refugees. Morocco controls about three-quarters of the territory, and has offered its citizens money, food subsidies, and tax exemptions to move there.

In the 1990s, coastal towns in the Western Sahara became key migration transit points for reaching the Canary Islands, after Spain and Italy tightened visa restrictions and the European Union put pressure on Morocco to control illegal migration, which pushed African migrants to shift their routes.

4. Sint Maarten: 4.79% average growth since 1950

Like its French counterpart, Sint Maarten, the Dutch side of the island of Saint Martin, is known for its beaches, as well as its nightlife, and casinos. A strong tourism industry, including 1.7 million cruise passengers a year, has helped boost population numbers.

5. Kuwait: 4.76% average growth since 1950

Kuwait imports a lot of its workforce, which is one of the reasons why its population has grown as much as it has. The country hosts many overseas contract workers from India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the Philippines, who are mostly employed in the construction sector and service industry.

6. Jordan: 4.36% average growth since 1950

Between 2004 and 2015, Jordan grew by 87%, going from 5.1 million people to 9.5 million — with the majority of the growth coming from outside the country, including 1.26 million Syrians, Jordan Times reported. Jordan's Department of Statistics attributed a lot of the growth to waves of "forced immigration and refugees".

7. Mayotte: 4.13% average growth since 1950

Although Mayotte is one of France's poorest overseas departments, it is still one of the more prosperous regions in the area and has had many immigrants from other Mozambique Channel nations enter it illegally, which has played a role in its growing population.

8. Djibouti: 3.96% average growth since 1950

One of the reasons for the high population change is Djibouti's location. Positioned at the crossroads between Europe, Asia, and Africa, it has increasingly becoming a transit or destination country. Since 2009, Djibouti has become a major point on this migration route for thousands of people.

9. Bahrain: 3.84% average growth since 1950

Bahrain has a history of bringing in overseas contract workers, which is a factor in its growing population. The promise of employment is often used to lure workers from India, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, according to IOM, the UN's migration organization.

10. Saint-Martin: 3.65% average growth since 1950

Saint-Martin's economy centers around tourism, which gets 85% of its economy from tourism. The French side of the island is also a cruise destination, known for its beaches, shopping, and cuisine. The tourism first industry boomed in the 1980s due to opportunities created by tax reductions.

11. Andorra: 3.61% average growth since 1950

There are a number of reasons why Andorra has had experienced high population growth. Its citizens have one of the highest life expectancies in the world, and it's one of the richest nations due to tourism and its historical status as a tax haven.

But Andorra's population has fallen more recently, due to low birth rates and the government being selective on who becomes a resident.

12. French Guiana: 3.52% average growth since 1950

French Guiana's population has grown in size due to immigrants coming from France, Saint Martin, Suriname, Haiti, and Brazil, and also because of high fertility rates— 44% of the country is younger than 20, while only 1.7% is older than 75.

13. Oman: 3.45% average growth since 1950

One of the reasons Oman's population has grown is the country's push to build large infrastructure projects, which requires a lot of overseas labor. Oman gets the majority of its workers from India and Bangladesh, Gulf News reported

14. Saudi Arabia: 3.45% average growth since 1950

Saudi Arabia grew exponentially between 1960 and 1990, from a population of 4 million to 16 million, partly because of the country's vast oil reserves. Foreign workers came to the country to help with the workload, and now make up 37% of the population.

15. Cayman Islands: 3.33% average growth since 1950

The Cayman Islands' economy depends on tourism and banking. A lot of its population growth comes from the 100,000 companies that base themselves there, to take advantage of its tax haven status.

LOWEST POPULATION GROWTH: 1. Nuie: -1.51% average growth since 1950

Nuie did not have a massive population to begin with, but since the 1960s, it fell from 5,000 people to 1,600, The Guardian reported. Fifteen times as many Niueans live in New Zealand for work opportunities, and because Niueans are automatically New Zealand citizens.

2. Montserrat: -1.42% average growth since 1950

One of the big issues for Montserrat was when the Soufriere Hills volcano began erupting in 1995, destroying two-thirds of the island, and displacing thousands.

3. Tokelau: -0.21% average growth since 1950

One of the main reasons Tokelau's population is falling is because of emigration to Samoa and New Zealand for work opportunities.

4. Holy See (Vatican City): -0.17% average growth since 1950

As most of the 800 residents who live in Holy See primarily work for the Roman Catholic Church, often as nuns and priests, the birth rate is very low.

5. Bulgaria: -0.06% average growth since 1950

Emigration is the big one for Bulgaria. The country has the lowest average salary in the EU, the lowest minimum wage, the smallest average pension, and 40% are at risk of poverty, the Irish Times reported.

6. Latvia: -0.03% average growth since 1950

Emigration is an issue for Latvia, too, where wages are "a joke" — but it's not the only reason for the country's falling population. The former Soviet state also has a low birth rate and high death rate.

7. Hungary: 0.05% average growth since 1950

One of the reasons Hungary's population is declining is because more people are dying there than being born, Hungary Today reported. Large numbers are also emigrating, with more than 8% of graduates living abroad. Often these graduates are people of childbearing age who are not living in Hungary, leading to every sixth Hungarian child being born outside the country.

8. Lithuania: 0.08% average growth since 1950

Lithuania's population stagnation is largely due to emigration, particularly to the United Kingdom, and more deaths than births. In 1989, when it declared independence from the Soviet Union, Lithuania had 3.7 million people, but it now has 2.8 million.

9. Croatia: 0.09% average growth since 1950

Croatia's population is falling due to a combination of more deaths than births, as well as emigration to other countries. Although data on emigration is unclear, Total Croatia News reported that the country had lost about 200,000 people between 2015 and 2017. The last natural population increase for Croatia was in 1997.

10. Georgia: 0.18% average growth since 1950

One of the reasons for a falling population is that since the Soviet Union fell, more than 1 million Georgians have emigrated due to lack of opportunities. Another reason is that there is a preference for boys, which has led to sex-selective abortions and fewer females.

11 (tied). Saint Kitts and Nevis: 0.21% average growth since 1950

This two-island nation in the Caribbean Sea has had high levels of emigration, but a strong tourism industry and its position as a tax haven have kept population levels more stable in recent decades.

11 (tied). Saint Helena: 0.21% average growth since 1950

This volcanic tropical island, famous for housing Napoleon Bonaparte in exile, has had little population growth due in part to its isolation. It's more than 1,200 miles from the nearest major landmass. But it does now have "the world's most useless" airport.

13. Cook Islands: 0.22% average growth since 1950

Since 1996, many people left the Cook Islands after the government introduced an economic reform program that led to the loss of public sector jobs, Cook Islands News reported. Another reason was the decline in births, as a result of fewer parents of childbearing ages living in the country.

14. Ukraine: 0.23% average growth since 1950

In Ukraine, since the 1990s, a high death rate and low birth rate has led to a declining population. In 2016, a member of Ukraine's Parliament said, "People are dying due to bad living conditions, declining environmental standards, or the war," New Week reported. The country also loses people to emigration.

15. Romania: 0.24% average growth since 1950

Romania is losing a lot of its population to people emigrating to other countries in the European Union due to corruption poverty, according to The Guardian. As many as 3.4 million Romanians have left the country since 2007, when it joined the EU, which equates to 17% of the country's population.

Al Capone's former mansion in Miami Beach, Florida, located in the gated Palm Island community, was up for sale for $14.9 million in April 2018, according to Curbed Miami. Capone lived on the 30,000-square-foot property with his immediate family until he died in 1947, according to the FBI.

The mansion's listing on Zillow shows that the home was taken off the market in April 2019, and in July, it was re-listed for sale at $12.9 million.

Pablo Escobar's Miami Beach property was up for sale in March 2019.

The 30,000-square-foot property, which was once the residence of drug lord Pablo Escobar, was put up for sale by ONE Sotheby's International Realty in March 2019.

The property is near the water and offers a clear view of the Miami skyline. According to previous reporting by INSIDER, Escobar's home on the property was demolished in 2016.

Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer’s childhood home in Akron, Ohio, has been listed for both sale and rental.

The house where serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer grew up in Akron, Ohio, has been listed for sale and rent, according to its Zillow listing.

The Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that the home's current owner put the house up for rent in 2016 during the Republican National Convention, which was hosted in nearby Cleveland. People could have rented it for $8,000 a month.

Famed fashion designer Gianni Versace was murdered outside his mansion in Miami Beach in 1997. The property has been sold multiple times, and it's now a luxury hotel.

The Miami Beach mansion owned by the late Gianni Versace, who was murdered just outside the home in 1997, was purchased in 2000 by telecommunication entrepreneur Peter Loftin for $19 million. Then, the property was sold in 2013 for $41.5 million, according to CNBC.

The 19,000-square-foot Ocean Drive property is now a luxury hotel called The Villa Casa Casuarina. Guests can book suites starting at $749 per night.

The Los Angeles condo where Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were murdered was put up for sale twice.

The home where Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman were murdered in 1994 was sold two later for $525,000, according to the LA Times. The condo was sold again in 2006 for $1.72 million.

The murders led to the infamous, eight-month-long trial of OJ Simpson. Simpson was acquitted of all criminal charges, though a civil court two years later in 1997 found Simpson liable for wrongful death in the double murder and he was ordered to pay damages to both victims' families. OJ Simpson maintains his innocence.

The Beverly Hills home where brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted of murdering their parents in 1989 has also been listed for sale.

In 1996, brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez were convicted of murdering their parents in their Beverly Hills mansion in 1989. According to the home's listing on Realtor.com, the Beverly Hills mansion was listed for $3.9 million in 1997, then $4.1 million in 2001.

In 2016, the Long Island, New York, home that was the site of the 'Amityville Horror' murders was put up for sale.

In 1974, the town of Amityville, New York, was haunted by a series of murders by Ronald DeFeo Jr., who confessed to murdering his parents and four children at a house known as 112 Ocean Ave., according to the History Channel.

The DeFeo's house was sold to a man named George Lutz in 1975, who moved in with his family. The Lutz family claimed the home was haunted and left after 28 days of living there, according to the History Channel.

The story inspired a novel and two films called "The Amityville Horror."

The home where the 1974 murders occurred is now known as 108 Ocean Ave., according to the New York Daily News. In 2016, the supposedly haunted home was listed for sale, and its Zillow listing shows it was purchased in 2017.

This Massachusetts home was the site of the 1892 murders of Andrew and Abby Borden. Their daughter, Lizzie Borden, was accused of the murder, which led to her sensational trial. The home has since been up for sale multiple times, and it's now a bed and breakfast and museum.

In 1892, Lizzie Borden was accused of murdering her father and stepmother in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts. Her historic trial ended in the jury acquitting her in 1893, according to the History Channel.

The home where the murders took place is now the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast and Museum

Following the trial, Borden lived in a mansion known as Maplecroft, also in Fall River, according to The Herald News. The Maplecroft mansion has been listed for sale more than once. In 2014, a woman from Texas bought the home with plans to turn it into a bed and breakfast. In 2018, Maplecroft was sold to the owners of the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast and Museum.

If your iPhone has a frozen screen – in other words, it does not respond when you touch it – all hope is not lost. A frozen iPhone can often be easily fixed.

How to fix a frozen iPhone

Of course, it's always possible that there is a serious problem with your iPhone, so if these troubleshooting steps don't work, the next step might be to contact Apple support.

Charge your iPhone

It's possible that charging your phone for a short time can revive it. For the best results, plug your phone directly into a power adapter – don't charge it wirelessly or plug it into a computer's USB port. Let it charge for at least 30 minutes and then try to use it again.

Restart or force-restart your iPhone

If your iPhone still isn't responsive, try to restart your phone by pressing the appropriate button presses for your iPhone model. If that has no effect, then you can try to force-restart your phone.

For complete details on how to restart and force-restart an iPhone, see the article, "How to restart and force-restart any iPhone model."

restart 3

Both the restart and force-restart will not erase any apps or data, so this is safe to do even without a recent backup.

Troubleshoot your iPhone if it freezes while restarting

If your iPhone successfully restarts but can't get past the Apple logo, then you should connect your iPhone to a computer with iTunes installed and try some additional troubleshooting steps.

1. Start iTunes on the computer.

2. Put your iPhone in recovery mode. The procedure for doing this depends upon which model iPhone you own:

  • If you have an iPhone 8 or later, press and hold the Power button and one of the volume buttons until you see the option to turn off your iPhone. Drag the slider to turn it off. While holding the Power button on the iPhone, connect your iPhone to your computer with a USB connection cable. Keep holding the Power button until you see the recovery mode screen.

restart iphone

  • If you have an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus, press and hold the Power button until you see the option to turn off your iPhone. Drag the slider to turn it off. While holding the Volume Down button on the iPhone, connect the iPhone to your computer with a USB connection cable. Keep holding the Volume Down button until you see the recovery mode screen.
  • If you have an iPhone 6s or older, press and hold the Power button until you see the option to turn off your iPhone. Drag the slider to turn off your phone. While holding the Home button, connect your phone to your computer with a USB connection cable. Keep holding the Home button until you see the recovery mode screen.

3. When you see the option to restore or update your iPhone on your computer, click "Update." iTunes will update the phone without deleting your apps and data.

Adidas made waterproof sneakers from recycled ocean plastic that can seamlessly transition between land and water — here why they’re the ultimate outdoor shoe for summer

Adidas Terrex Climacool Parley Water Shoe

When it comes to traveling, I'm what most people would consider to be an overpacker. No, it's not because I'm worried about being stranded far away from home or because I'm a paranoid, always-ready doomsday prepper. It honestly comes down to one thing: my shoes.

It doesn't matter if I'm at home, away for the weekend, or out of the country for more than a couple days, I like variety. But on my latest vacation, I learned that versatility is far more important than variety — and picking the right pair can save you from lugging around a half a dozen shoes and paying for a checked bag.

I recently went on a five-day trip to Tulum, Mexico with a total of seven pairs of shoes. Despite having more than I needed, I ended up wearing only one pair for a majority of the trip — that pair was the Adidas Terrex Climacool Voyager Parley Water Shoes.

Adidas Terrex Climacool Parley Water Shoe

Made in collaboration with Parley for the Oceans, the water shoe features a combination of Parley's recycled ocean plastic yarn and Adidas' Climacool material on the upper, paired with lightweight but thick foam midsoles, chunky Stealth rubber outsoles for traction, and a built-in water drainage system. The shoes also use a four-eyelet lacing system for a secure fit.

Essentially doubling as a mild terrain hiking shoe, the Adidas Terrex CC Voyager Parley Water Shoe is far more durable and versatile than those flimsy $10 water shoes you might buy the day before going on vacation.

During my trip to Mexico, I wore the shoes for hiking, biking, ATVing, and navigating and swimming in the region's rocky, water-filled sinkholes and caves called cenotes — and they far exceeded my expectations for a water shoe.

Adidas Parley Voyager

First impressions

I first got the Adidas Terrex CC Voyager Parley Water Shoes a little over a year ago (they were sent to me by Adidas). After wearing them very briefly while writing about Adidas and Parley's sustainability efforts, they had been sitting in the box practically untouched. This was partly because I had no real immediate use for them in my day-to-day life in the city, and partly because I wasn't entirely sold on $120 water shoes from a brand I'd typically go to specifically for running shoes.

Adidas is working to make a name for itself in an outdoor industry dominated by American legacy brands like L.L.Bean and Columbia, so, naturally, consumers (myself included) tend to have some reluctance about the gear. But, in general, I've always come away impressed with Adidas' shoes, so I figured the Adidas Terrex CC Voyager Parley Water Shoes deserved a more in-depth test — and I'm glad I gave them another shot.

What they're like to wear

Aesthetically, the shoes are more like a sporty sneaker than a funny-looking slip-on water shoe. For someone who likes sneakers as much as I do, that was a major plus. (Editor's note: I don't think anyone likes sneakers as much as Amir does.)

On my first full day in Mexico, we left the resort to visit Xel-Ha Park. It's described as a water park, but it's nothing like the commercial water or amusement parks with paved pathways here in the states. The park is filled with dirt trails and there's a decent amount of walking/hiking in between the different water activities.

The Adidas Terrex CC Voyager turned out to be the perfect shoe because my feet felt protected from rocks on the trails and I could keep my shoes on when getting in the water. Instead of that squishy sensation you get when there's a pool of water inside your shoe, the Adidas Terrex CC Voyager quickly drains, so you can smoothly transition back to land.

Adidas Parley Voyager

As expected, my feet were still wet after the water drained out, but not for long — the Climacool material dries quickly. About 15 minutes after leaving the water, I was on riding a bike on a trail and my shoes and feet were almost completely dry.

The next day, I went ATVing on some trails that were so dusty you'd be a fool not to wear sunglasses and a bandana to cover your face. Although your shoes are super important while riding an ATV, I'd say that a normal pair of water shoes, or any pair of sneakers you don't want to be ruined, would be a bad choice. My shoes — along with the rest of my body — were completely covered in dust at the end of the excursion. Fortunately, I was able to rinse my shoes off and continue to wear them for the rest of the day.

In terms of fit, I recommend going true to size. Since I was wearing mine in and out of the water, I didn't wear any socks — and I would imagine that's how Adidas intended them to be worn. If for some reason you do want to wear socks with them, you should still have room when you wear your true size.

The bottom line

Before putting the Adidas Terrex CC Voyager Parley Water Shoes to the test, I would have had a hard time believing that any $120 pair of water shoe was worth the money, but these are worth every penny — and still, most sizes can be bought for less on Amazon. They're durable, quick-drying, comfortable, and more stylish than a traditional water shoe.

Aside from my Adidas NMDs (my favorite sneaker to wear while traveling) and the dress shoes I brought for some of the fancier restaurants at the resort, my other shoes went mostly unworn.

If you're looking for a solid pair of shoes that can handle summer travels and adventures, I strongly recommend the Adidas Terrex CC Voyager Parley. For women who wear smaller sizes and are interested in a similar, equally capable water shoe, I recommend the Adidas Terrex Voyager Sleek Summer.RDY Water Shoe.

Several speed setting, it is comfortable to hold, and comes with a few accessories."

Healthy Handyman positively reviewed this model, stating, "The multi-tool is made with every user in mind. It has a comfortable grip as well as a sleek pencil shape design. Users can utilize the tool without any issues. It's ideal for both professionals and those who are DIY enthusiasts."

Pros: Variable speed for controlled power, EZ Twist nose cap allows for quick accessory changes, comes with 28 accessories and a carrying case, backed by a two-year limited warranty

Cons: Doesn't work with all Dremel accessories

The best budget

The WEN 2305 Rotary Tool Kit includes everything you need to get started with crafts or projects around the house, all for less than $30.

The WEN 2305 Rotary Tool Kit is a lower budget introductory model that still offers the versatility you'd get from some more expensive rotary tools. This rotary tool has variable speeds from 8,000 to 30,000 RPMs, and all you have to do to adjust the speed is to turn a knob. The tool is capable of cutting, engraving, grinding, and sanding.

This kit includes a flex shaft, which is a 3.5-foot extension capable of accessing tight spaces and limiting vibration for increased accuracy. Thanks to an onboard spindle lock, changing bits is easy so you can progress through your projects without interruption.

In addition to the rotary tool itself, the kit includes 100 accessories such as bits, polishing pads, and sanding discs. A custom case offers compact storage for the entire kit. This tool kit is backed by a one-year limited warranty.

The WEN 2305 Rotary Tool Kit has a 4.1 out of 5-star rating on Amazon, based on 3,878 reviews. Geekus was pleased with how this tool compares to a Dremel: "It does the job, comes with the same accessories, is compatible with Dremel bits and tools, is more rugged, feels great in the hands, and is about one-fourth the price!!!"

Kschneiderheinzejr has also been pleased with this tool's performance: "Great torque for when you don't want a Dremel to bog down, and the etcher pen with the extension is great for getting into hard spots and when paying attention to detail is important. I'm very pleased with this purchase and have gave this thing a true work out in a couple weeks' time. Not just good for carpentry and detail work either mines used in a engine shop primarily and I'm pleased with the results."

Pros: Includes flex tool for navigating tight spaces, comes with 100 accessories, low price point, variable speed settings for accuracy and control

Cons: Has less power than some more expensive rotary tools

The best for jewelry

Foredom's Jeweler's Kit comes with the 2230 SR motor, an H30 handpiece, a pedal to drive the motor, and a jeweler's accessory kit that includes everything you need to make jewelry (among other things).

We had a DIY jeweler test out the Foredom for a few months, and since then, he's made 70 rings with the Jeweler's Kit, and he's regularly impressed by the power of the motor and the versatility of the tool and all its included accessories.

The SR motor has ⅙ horsepower and it can reach speeds of up to 18,000 revolutions per minute, plus, it can operate in forward or reverse, depending on what you need the tool to do. There's just one simple switch on the motor that you flip to turn it on and have the tool run in forward or reverse.

It's a powerful motor and it handled every task we threw at it from engraving, deburring, grinding, and polishing metal to carving into wood. It comes with a two-year warranty, so if you run into any problems, all you need to do is contact Foredom and they'll help you fix it or replace it.

The motor is quite heavy, but the kit comes with a handy clamp and hanging system so you can attach it to your workbench and hang it up. You'll need a sturdy table to hold it up properly. We used a solid wooden table to do the job.

To operate the motor and control its speed, you simply push the foot pedal — just like you would with a car or a sewing machine. The harder you push, the faster the motor runs and the tool moves. The pedal is wide and sturdy with its textured plastic build. We had a much easier time controlling the speed and ensuring the smooth operation of the tools with the Foredom's foot pedal than with the Dremel's controls.

Foredom also includes a H30 handpiece in the box that attaches to the motor. We found the handpiece to be very comfortable to hold for long periods of time while making rings and pendants for necklaces. Perhaps the best thing about the handpiece, though, is how easy it is to swap different accessories in and out, thanks to chuck key.

The Jeweler's Kit comes with 43 different accessories that are specifically intended for making jewelry. The accessories are professional grade, and we found everything we needed to make rings in the toolkit. We deburred sharp edges on pieces of metal and polished away any imperfections with the different tools. The engraving tool also works incredibly well. Foredom also gives you a little plastic stand to keep all your tools in.

In addition to making jewelry, you can use the Foredom to carve wood, make sculptures, inlay wood, and work on guns. Overall, we much prefer it to the Dremel we were using before due to its more powerful motor, easy-to-use foot pedal controls, and the variety of tools. — Malarie Gokey

Pros: Strong motor, can move in reverse, easy-to-use foot pedal controls, comes with 43 jewelry-making accessories, multi-purpose tool, handpiece is well made

Cons: Pricey, takes up more space since you have to hang the motor up

The best cordless

The Dremel 8220 Variable Speed Cordless Rotary Tool Kit offers cordless convenience and it's suitable for a wide range of projects.

If you're looking for a rotary tool that's easily portable so that you don't have to worry about finding the nearest outlet, the Dremel 8220 Variable Speed Cordless Rotary Tool Kit is right for the job. This lithium-ion battery-powered tool can run for 1.5 hours on a single charge.

The tool is compact and features a comfort grip to minimize hand fatigue, and its 360-degree grip zone means you can achieve that perfect grip no matter what position the tool is in. Additionally, the ball bearing construction makes for smooth, quiet operation.

This 12-Volt tool is suitable for heavier duty projects including cutting, finishing, grinding, and sanding. The tool comes with 28 accessories and two attachments, giving you a well-rounded kit that you can expand on for specialized jobs; you can use this tool with all current Dremel accessories and attachments. Two batteries are included so that you can swap them out for longer continuous run time. This tool is backed by a two-year warranty.

The Dremel 8220 Variable Speed Cordless Rotary Tool Kit has a 4.4 out of 5-star rating on Home Depot, based on 42 reviews. Bob wrote, "I purchased this unit because it was cordless. It had the extra battery so if the project exceeds the charge of one battery, I can slip in the spare and continue the project. I have sanded and ground toenails, drilled ceramics, cut wood and trimmed plastic parts. It has done everything I wanted."

Krishnadasa was impressed with the tool's performance: "The battery life was surprisingly good. This is subjective, of course, but when applying a substantial load to the tool while using the cloth polishing wheels, the motor got hot, but the batteries kept going without slowing down."

Pros: Battery powered, includes two batteries, comfort grip minimizes fatigue, comes with 28 accessories

Cons: Higher price point than other corded rotary tools

The best for cutting

The DeWalt DW660 Cut-Out Rotary Tool is designed specifically for cutting, making it a great addition to a toolkit for home or professional use.

While rotary tools are highly versatile, repeatedly cutting accurate holes requires a little extra refinement. The DeWalt DW660 Cut-Out Rotary Tool is designed to repeatedly cut holes with ease. If you're in construction and have to frequently cut holes in materials, this rotary tool is an easy-to-use solution.

This tool features a turn-on and bump-off switch for easy powering up and down, and the slim overall design helps to minimize your fatigue during long hours of use. The switch is dust-sealed so this unit is ready for operation in high-dust construction environments.

The 5-amp, 30,000 RPM motor delivers plenty of cutting power. Additionally, this rotary tool allows for tool-free bit changes to keep you working without interruption. Use this tool to make plunge cuts in wood, drywall, tile, and more.

The DeWalt DW660 Cut-Out Rotary Tool has a 4.1 out of 5-star Amazon rating, based on 591 reviews. Samira C. Massey wrote, "This thing makes Dremels seem like child's toys. I don't ever write reviews but this monster deserves one….I've always preferred Milwaukee tools, but I must say I am extremely impressed. Dewalt just jumped back on my good side."

RyanEnergizer was also impressed by its performance: "This thing is sweet, basically like an amped up Dremel. I don't use it to cut drywall, I just use it as a Dremel tool. With the 1/8" collet, you can use Dremel accessories (cutting wheels, buffers, sanding, and grinding wheels etc.)"

Pros: Turn on/bump off switch, dust-sealed switch for durability, powerful motor, tool-free bit changes

Cons: Designed to cut holes so it lacks some versatility of more general rotary tools

Netflix and FX are severing ties with Peggy Siegal, the NYC publicist who got Jeffrey Epstein into A-list events and has been called the 'best way' to make sure your movie wins an Oscar

Peggy Siegal George Clooney

Peggy Siegal, one of New York's most powerful publicists, has spent over 30 years connecting New York's tastemakers to generate press and awards for the films she represents. Until two years ago, one of those influential people was registered sex offender and financier Jeffrey Epstein.

On July 22, Variety reported that a variety of Hollywood companies — including Netflix and FX — had severed ties with Siegal after her connection to Epstein became public.

In a statement provided to Business Insider, Siegal said:

"I believe I met Jeffrey Epstein sometime in 2005, and we became social friends as he was somewhat of a film buff who wanted to come to film screenings ... I did not know at the time — and did not learn until recently — that he had been abusing underage girls. When Jeffrey returned from Palm Beach and his time in jail, I understood that he had spent time in jail for soliciting a prostitute, and he assured me that he had changed his ways. I did not believe that the charges were very serious because I knew he was allowed to work from his office every day ... I am horrified as each of these women come forward and the accusations mount. I am deeply embarrassed by my relationship with him and that I allowed him to use me."

In 2010, a year after Epstein was released from a 13-month prison sentence for solicitation of prostitution and procurement of minors for prostitution in Florida, Siegal invited him to her events and even planned a dinner party at his house for Prince Andrew, according to The New York Times.

His relationship with Siegal was not the only way Epstein, who was arrested on charges of sex trafficking of minors on July 6, 2019, attempted to raise his profile during that time. Business Insider previously reported that former President Bill Clinton and Britain's Prince Andrew were also in Epstein's network.

Peggy Siegal, 72, is a New Jersey native.

Siegal's father owned a light bulb company, according to The New York Times, and Siegal's mother wanted her to focus more on social-climbing than building a career. She gave Siegal the name "Peggy" because she "thought that name would sound great in the halls of Vogue magazine," Siegal told the newspaper, and refused to send Siegal to the same elite private high school as her son.

"Every day in high school I had to watch my brother come home in a school uniform, going to school with rich kids in New York," Siegal said, according to the Times. "I was going to school at Fort Lee High with the children of hairdressers and gas station attendants. This was beyond humiliating."

"As a Jewish princess from New Jersey, I always wanted to be a queen," Siegal told the Times in 2016.

She's hosted events for journalists and members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to promote films including "The Big Short," "Argo," and "The Revenant."

Siegal specializes in hosting lunches, teas, and dinners for filmmakers to help them promote their work. She described the events to The New York Times as "a press conference wrapped around a piece of chicken."

Vanity Fair reported that Siegel is "the engine that drives" the New York Oscar circuit. "The best way to win an Oscar is to make a great film," the magazine observed, "but the best way to guarantee it is to get Peggy to shine a light on it."

Siegal has a directory of 30,000 contacts that includes Barbara Walters, Martha Stewart, Michael Douglas, Darren Aronofsky, and Sofia Coppola, according to The New York Times.

Siegal's vast social network is important to her work: She said she gets big names to attend her events to help draw in journalists and film critics. For example, she got Holocaust survivor and author Elie Wiesel to attend an event for the Hungarian Holocaust film "Son of Saul," she told The New York Times, because "all Jews want to meet Elie Wiesel."

To make things easier, she told The New York Times she keeps her contacts list sorted by both nationality and profession.

For the past decade, Siegal has mailed a creative Valentine's Day card to her contacts.

Her 2019 card featured a picture of Siegal in a spacesuit imitating the movie poster for "First Man," a copy of the card obtained by The Hollywood Reporter shows.

"Happy Valentine's Day. I love you to the moon and back," the card reads.

Siegal always signs her cards and emails "XOXO Peggy," according to The Hollywood Reporter

Among those contacts is registered sex offender and multimillionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein.

"He said he'd served his time and assured me that he changed his ways," Siegal said about her reunion with Epstein after he was released from prison in 2010, according to The New York Times. The pair had been friends before his prison term, so she began to add him back to the guest list of some of her events.

Siegal planned a dinner party for Epstein at his Upper East Side home. The event was attended by Britain's Prince Andrew, Katie Couric, George Stephanopoulos, and Chelsea Handler in 2010.

Netflix, FX and Annapurna Pictures fired Siegal after her connection to Epstein became public, Variety reported on July 22. Sources close to the companies told Variety that none of the studios had long-term contracts with Siegal, but would not hire her again. Siegal was also fired from the New York premiere of Annapurna's "Where'd You Go, Bernadette?" that she had planned for August 12.

Siegal has said that she frequently goes under the knife.

"The best way to combat gender and age discrimination is to knock them out when you walk into a room," Siegal told The New York Times

At her sixtieth and seventieth birthday parties, Siegal even passed out pamphlets with her beauty secrets, according to New York Magazine. The most recent edition, entitled "How to Look Like Me at 70," lists her favorite surgeons and beauty products.

She's known for being a tough boss.

Siegal isn't the easiest person to work with, The New York Times has reported. She has been known to yell at her subordinates and struggles to remember their names.

Many of her former employees are successful, however, going on to work for the Governor's Office of Motion Picture and Television Development, 20th Century Fox, and Warner Bros., according to The New York Times.

She lives in an Upper East Side apartment that used to belong to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' father.

Siegal lives alone in a two-bedroom apartment on East 74th Street, according to The New York Times. She said that she works seven days a week and is too focused on her career for a family.

  • The 50th anniversary of NASA's historic Apollo 11 mission took place on July 20, 2019.
  • The event stoked our collective imagination about the worlds that lie beyond our own. Today, our excitement about space exploration hasn't wavered, which is why NASA enjoys a glamour and aura of cool not typically enjoyed by government agencies.
  • Brands from Nike to Timex to LEGO have created limited-edition 50th anniversary products to capitalize on our universal, long-standing fascination with space and space exploration. You can also shop other NASA-branded products such as hats and t-shirts all year round.

Apollo 11, the NASA mission that put Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, Jr. on the moon, turned 50 years old on July 20, 2019.

Half a century ago, the world stopped in its tracks to watch them plant a flag on the moon, effectively marking a new era of space exploration. Today, the excitement surrounding everything that lies beyond our own tiny blue dot is as strong, if not stronger, than the fervor generated by the great Space Race of the '60s.

The near-universal fascination with our universe means that NASA enjoys a glamour and aura of cool not typically enjoyed by government agencies. Wearing anything with a NASA logo is met with nods of approval, but a USDA or FTC seal? Not so much.

In celebration of the historic Apollo 11 event, some brands, either in direct collaboration with NASA or not, have released limited-edition anniversary products like shoes and watches. You can also celebrate with NASA-branded products that are available all year round. The 50th anniversary only comes once, so don't pass up on the opportunity to show your love for space and space exploration.
