All the ways you can watch Amazon Prime Video on your TV, from smart TVs to streaming from an iPhone

Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime is Amazon's popular subscription service that gives members free shipping on many products in the store. But the subscription (currently $119 a year for most people, though there is a discounted student plan) includes a lot more than just shipping — you get a slew of discounts, streaming music, streaming video, and a lot more.

If you are an Amazon Prime subscriber and looking for ways to get your free streaming video on a television, you're in luck — there are a lot of options.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Amazon Prime subscription (30-day free trial or $12.99/month)

Amazon Prime Video (30-day free trial or $12.99/month)

Amazon Fire TV (From $14.99 at Amazon)

Roku Express (From $24 at Amazon)

Apple TV (From $149.99 at Best Buy)

Google Chromecast (From $35 at Best Buy)

How to watch Amazon Prime Video on your TV

Smart TVs

First and foremost, most smart TVs — TVs with a built-in ability to display streaming services — support Amazon Prime.

If you're shopping for a smart TV, you should make sure that it has an Amazon Prime channel built in — but virtually all do, making this step pretty simple. Brands like Samsung, LG, TCL, Toshiba, Sony, and more include Amazon Prime Video.

TCL Roku TV

Streaming players

If your TV isn't "smart" — or if you have a smart TV that doesn't, for some reason, include Amazon Prime, you can add Amazon Prime Video by connecting a streaming player to your TV. There are a large number of streaming players available, and like smart TVs, virtually all include the ability to play Amazon Prime Video.

Amazon sells its own family of streaming players, all of which feature Prime Video— the Amazon Fire TV. In addition, you can look for any of the Roku players, an Apple TV, and others.

Amazon Fire Stick

In addition, some home theater components have streaming video built in as well. If you are shopping for a replacement DVD or Blu-ray player, be aware that many of these disc players also allow streaming video like Amazon Prime.

"Cast" from a Chromecast

Google's Chromecast is a unique device that lets you wirelessly "cast" content from your phone, tablet, or computer to your TV. Like most ordinary streaming players, the Chromecast plugs into an HDMI port on your TV. But it then plays video (and other content) wirelessly from your device.

While there is no way to access a dedicated Amazon Prime Video app via Chromecast, you can play content from Amazon Prime Video on your Android phone or computer and then "cast" it to your TV using a Chromecast.

Connect a phone or tablet to a TV

With the right cable, you can connect your tablet (like an iPad) or even your phone directly to a TV. For an iPad, for example, you need to get a Lightning to Digital AV adapter, which is available from any Apple store on online. For details on how to make the connection, read our article "How to connect an iPad to your TV in two different ways."

You can get an affordable robot vacuum from Eufy for $149 right now as a Prime Day deal

eufy1

  • Robot vacuums clean your floors without you having to lift a finger.
  • While robot vacuums tend to be really expensive, Eufy has a range of more affordable options, with every model coming in at under $300.
  • This year, you can save big on the Eufy 11S (now $149) or be the first to get the new Eufy 11S Plus, a Prime Day exclusive.
  • Don't miss out on the best deals of Amazon Prime Day 2019. See our master list of the best deals here.

Vacuuming is a tedious butnecessary household chore, which is why the idea of hands-free floor cleaning sounds so good. With the advent of robot vacuums that collect dirt and grime on their own, it's actually possible to get back those hours that would otherwise be spent cleaning.

Robot vacuums are understandably expensive , with high-tech capabilities that make them powerful and efficient. However, while brands like iRobot have robot vacuum models priced up to $1,000, Eufy offers equally powerful options that are all priced at $300 or less.

Eufy robot vacuum deals for Prime Day 2019:

  • Eufy BoostIQ RoboVac 11S, $149 (originally $223.99) [You save $80.99]: The slimmest RoboVac yet has increased suction power to suck up more dust and dirt on your hard floors and carpets. When the power is low, Eufy will automatically return to the charging base so it's always charged and ready to vacuum.
  • Eufy BoostIQ RoboVac 11S Plus, $189.99 [Prime Day exclusive launch]: While it may not technically be a deal, this new Eufy RoboVac is an exclusive launch just for Prime Day. The Plus has an even more powerful motor than the regular 11S,

The main difference, and why Eufy models are so much cheaper than models like the Roomba (see Roomba's Prime Day deals here) is that the Eufy ones don't come with mapping technology. You can schedule its daily run time via a remote during setup, and it'll go off every day thereafter at the designated time and essentially wander around until the battery dies and it automatically returns to its charging port. Our editor uses the Eufy RoboVac11S, and has found that although its technology is simpler than the app-controlled mapping vacuums she's tried, Eufy's suction is better and it still gets everywhere it needs to go. Read our review of the Eufy 11S.

If you're looking to get into the world of robot vacuums, Eufy is a great entry point.

At just about three inches tall, the Eufy RoboVac 11s can slide under furniture, tables, and other hard-to-clean nooks and crannies that traditional vacuums can't reach.  A high-capacity battery lasts for up to an hour and a half, and the Eufy even knows when its time to recharge. If you're worried about the vacuum bumping into items on the floor or falling off stairs, fear not — Eufy uses an infrared-sensor and drop-sensing technology to avoid obstacles and falls. A very powerful but quiet suction that picks up tons of dirt, grime, and pet dander on hard and soft surfaces alike is responsible for over 3,000 five-star reviews for the Eufy.

'How much is the Samsung Galaxy S10?': A cost breakdown of the entire Galaxy S10 family

$

samsung galaxy s10 lineup

  • Samsung offers four models in the Galaxy S10 family. Each starts at a different price point, and the total cost depends upon how much memory you choose.
  • The Galaxy S10e costs $750 for 128GB and $850 for 256GB.
  • The Galaxy S10 costs $900 for 128GB and $1150 for 512GB.
  • The Galaxy S10+ costs $1000 for 128GB, $1250 for 512GB, and $1600 for 1TB.
  • The Galaxy S10 5G costs $1300 for 128GB and $1400 for 512GB.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Samsung is on a tear of late, releasing a seemingly endless series of Android phones.

There's always something new on the horizon, like the troubled Galaxy Fold, but for now, the Samsung Galaxy S10 is the model that is getting the most attention.

It's actually a family of four models: the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10e, the Galaxy S10+, and the Galaxy S10 5G

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Galaxy S10 (From $900 at Best Buy)

Galaxy S10e (From $750 at Best Buy)

Galaxy S10+ (From $1000 at Best Buy)

Galaxy S10 5G (From $1300 at Best Buy)

The major features of the Galaxy S10 family

All of the Galaxy S10 models are built around the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. They all include Samsung's new PowerShare feature, which lets you charge other devices wirelessly from your S10's battery. All but one of the models feature three rear-facing cameras and one in front. Most of the phones are also available in multiple color choices, including black, white, blue, and pink.

The Galaxy S10e is intended to be somewhat more affordable than other members of the S10 family. It has a smaller 5.8-inch screen and a lower-capacity 3,100-mAh battery, and has two memory configurations that top out at a modest 256GB. But perhaps the biggest differences from other S10s is the fact that it has just two rear-facing cameras and there's no fingerprint sensor built into the screen, as in the other models.

The Galaxy S10 is the "standard" model in the lineup, with a 6.1-inch display 3,400-mAh battery, and up to 512GB of memory.

The Galaxy S10+, like Apple's "Plus" models, supersizes the S10. It has a larger 6.4-inch display and you can upgrade up to a massive 1TB of storage – but it's otherwise the same as the standard S10.

The Galaxy S10 5G is the newest model in the family and delivers just what the name suggests: support for 5G mobile networks – though 5G rollout is limited, and there are few places in the US where you can really take advantage of the technology in 2019. It's currently only available for Verizon, and with fewer color choices (only black and silver). The Galaxy S10 5G also has the largest display in the S10 family, at 6.7 inches.

How much each Galaxy S10 model costs

The least expensive mode, the Galaxy S10e, is available in two varieties:

  • The Galaxy S10e with 128GB of memory costs $750.
  • The Galaxy S10e with 256GB of memory costs $850.

The Galaxy S10 is also available in two varieties:

  • The Galaxy S10 with 128GB of memory costs $900.
  • The Galaxy S10 with 512GB of memory costs $1150.

The Galaxy S10+ is available in three varieties:

  • The Galaxy S10+ with 128GB of memory costs $1000.
  • The Galaxy S10+ with 512GB of memory costs $1250.
  • The Galaxy S10+ with 1TB of memory costs $1600.

The Galaxy S10 5G is available in two varieties:

  • The Galaxy S10 5G with 128GB of memory costs $1300.
  • The Galaxy S10 5G with 512GB of memory costs $1400.

All the new products Amazon is rumored to be working on, from a futuristic home robot to Alexa earbuds (AMZN)

Amazon echo

  • Amazon is rumored to be working on new gadgets such as a higher-quality Echo, a home robot, and Alexa-enabled earbuds among other products.
  • Such gadgets could give Amazon's popular Alexa assistant a stronger presence both inside and outside the home.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

When it comes to gadgets, Amazon is best known for its line of Echo smart speakers, Kindle e-readers, and Fire TVs and tablets. But based on reports, it sounds like the online retail giant has a lot more in its pipeline.

Amazon is reportedly planning to bring its popular Alexa assistant to a slew of new gadgets including home robots and earbuds. Such a move would give Amazon a way to expand its voice-enabled helper beyond the home, a market in which the company's Echo devices have already maintained a steady lead over rivals like Google.

Here's a look at the gadgets Amazon is said to be working on.

SEE ALSO: 25 tiny design features that show Apple's incredible attention to detail

A new Amazon Echo

Amazon is developing a new Echo that could be released by next year, according to Bloomberg. That wouldn't be too surprising considering Amazon has previously released new Echo products in the fall.

The report doesn't say much about the new Echo, other than that it's shaped like a cylinder just like the company's current speaker and that it's wider than the version Amazon sells today. That extra space is being used to fit additional components in the device, the report says.

A home robot that can respond to voice commands

Amazon has already established a strong presence in the home through the Echo, and now it's hoping to take that a step further with a domestic robot, as Bloomberg also reported.

The company is developing a household robot that has wheels for roaming about the home and navigates using computer vision, according to the report. Like the Echo, users would be able to interact with it using voice commands. The device is being called "Vesta" internally, and the company is said to have ramped up work on the project in recent months.

If Amazon does move forward with its "Vesta" bot, it's unclear when it will launch. The company planned to announced the robot this year, according to Bloomberg, but it's not ready for mass production just yet.

A high-fidelity music streaming service

Amazon is reportedly working on a high-definition music service that would offer a better bit rate than CD quality, according to Music Business Worldwide. It's expected to launch before the end of 2019 and could cost $15 per month, the report said citing music industry sources.

That timing suggests there's a chance Amazon could debut the high-fidelity music service alongside the new Echo it's rumored to launch. If Amazon does launch a high-fidelity music streaming service at that price point, it would be cheaper than Tidal, which charges $20 per month for that sound quality.

Wireless earbuds with Alexa built-in

Amazon could launch its own alternative to AirPods soon enough.

The company will reportedly release voice-activated earbuds powered by its popular Alexa virtual assistant as early as the second half of 2019, according to Bloomberg. In addition to using your voice to ask questions or summon the weather, you'll be able to execute certain tasks through gestures, says the report. Such actions reportedly include tapping to switch between music tracks or end phone calls.  Like AirPods, they are also expected to come in a case that serves as a charger.

A wearable device that can detect your emotions

Wireless earbuds aren't the only wearable devices Amazon is said to be working on. The company is reportedly developing a wrist-worn gadget that could recognize human emotions, according to Bloomberg.

The voice-activated device has been described as a health and wellness gadget, and it can discern a user's emotional state by the sound of his or her voice, the report says. The product has been codenamed Dylan, and it's unclear how far along it is. It would work in conjunction with a smartphone app.

The news regarding the product's development comes as rival Apple have been pushing more deeply into health. If Amazon does launch a wrist-worn health device, it would represent yet another area in which Amazon competes with the iPhone maker, along with voice-enabled assistants and music streaming.

Amazon's Fire TV Stick is at an all-time-low price of $14.99 for Prime Day 2019

Amazon has a lot of devices. From Echo Dots to Echo Spots, and Kindles to Fire Tablets, there's a repertoire of practical and fun tech gadgets. So, when Prime Day rolls around each year, it's only natural that Amazon drops prices on its own products.

Last year, one of the most outstanding deals we came across was on the Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote. While the Fire TV Stick is usually priced at $39.99, Amazon Prime members saved $20 and snagged it for just $19.99, the lowest price the device had ever seen. This year, it's on sale for even less at just $14.99.

Fire TV Stick deals for Prime Day 2019

In addition to the Fire TV Stick, you can save on these Fire TV products:

If you're not familiar with it, the Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote is a media streaming stick that lets you watch videos from your favorite streaming sites, like Netflix, Hulu, and Prime Video, on any TV. All you have to do is plug the Fire TV Stick into your TV's HDMI port to give even an old TV the smart TV treatment. Amazon's streaming stick also is integrated with Alexa, so you can use voice commands to pause, play, and turn on your favorite shows.

If you use Amazon Music, you can even use the Fire TV Stick to stream the service's millions of songs. If you don't use Amazon Music, now's a great time to give it a try. As a Prime Day deal, you can sign up for four months of Amazon Music Unlimited (a service that usually costs $7.99 a month for Prime members) for $1.

There are a few streaming stick options out there, but the Fire TV Stick is one of our favorites. Our tech reporter tested the Fire TV Stick against the popular Roku Streaming Stick. Ultimately, he found the Fire TV Stick to be a better value, as it comes with more features, but is still relatively inexpensive.

Foreigners are snapping up real estate on a tiny Mediterranean island to get EU citizenship, and it highlights the significance of 2nd passports as status symbols among the wealthy

$

Valletta, Malta

Malta's real-estate market is on fire.

Thanks to a robust economy and government incentives to foreign buyers and businesses, the Mediterranean island's property market is one of the world's strongest, Ruth Bloomfield for The Wall Street Journal reported. Asking prices have increased by more than 10% in the past year, she wrote, citing Knight Frank's latest Global House Price Index.

The island is drawing in overseas buyers, who are paying anywhere from $247,000 for a two-bedroom apartment on the south coast to $505,000 for a two-bedroom apartment on the Golden Mile along the northeastern coast (the most popular location for overseas buyers). A four-bedroom estate in the northern part of the island, Bloomfield wrote, is going for $4.7 million.

Malta's great weather, lack of a language barrier, and laid-back lifestyle hold a lot of appeal for foreign buyers, but there are greater advantages at play. Alan Grima, the CEO of Dhalia Real Estate Services, told Bloomfield that 60% of foreign buyers are from the EU, including workers of international companies who've opened offices in Malta.

But Americans are seeking the option to become EU citizens.

Malta offers wealthy people 2 different ways to buy their way into citizenship via real estate

Malta's individual-investor program (IIP) offers citizenship to applicants who rent or buy a property, Bloomfield reported. They're taxed relatively little — income tax is a maximum of 35% and there are no wealth taxes.

There are several investment options to buy citizenship in Malta. If going the real-estate route, foreign buyers must invest at least €350,000 ($394,000) in property or a property-rental contract for at least €16,000 ($18,000) to qualify for citizenship, Nuri Katz, the president of the international financial firm Apex Capital Partners, previously told Business Insider.

Buyers closing on property in Malta must first sign a "konvenju" (promise of sale) with a 10% deposit and a 5% buying tax, and can expect the sale to close within three to six months, according to Bloomfield. Unless a property is in a designated development or purchased through a trading company, foreign buyers are allowed to own only one property. They must also hold the property for at least five years to qualify for citizenship in Malta, Katz said.

Malta's program is a citizenship-by-investment program (CIPS), in which wealthy people invest in a country in exchange for citizenship. Once they have citizenship, they then have the basic rights of any other citizen of that country — like owning a passport, Katz said.

But a second passport buys more than a travel document — it also buys them status. "It's a status symbol — it shows friends you can afford it," Katz said. "I call it the black American Express syndrome."

Beyond status, there are also physical advantages to owning more than one passport. Armand Arton, the president of Arton Capital, previously told Business Insider that investors primarily seek increased global mobility, better security and education, diversified business opportunities and tax-planning strategies, and an improved quality of life.

And Malta isn't the only country where you can invest in citizenship — the opportunity is available everywhere from Thailand to Cyprus.

Brooklinen is running a Prime Day deal of its own — save 20% sitewide only on July 15

Brooklinen

Brooklinen is one of our favorite companies to cover. From its bed sheets, to its Brooklittles bedding line for babies and toddlers, to its super-plush bathrobes, to its recently launched shower curtain sets, there's a lot to love about the direct-to-consumer darling.

However, it's not known for holding sales. Prices are usually low enough to warrant what is essentially a year-round sale in itself.

The company typically only has two sales a year: one during Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and the other to celebrate its birthday in May. This year Brooklinen is running a third sale to coincide with Amazon Prime Day

Now through the end of Monday, July 15, you can take 20% off the entire site.

If you're looking for a new set of sheets, or you've been waiting for a discount as an excuse to try out luxury bedding, this is probably the best time of the year to invest. The company's bedding looks great, feels even better, and can vastly improve your quality of sleep — which, in turn, improves quite a few other areas of your life. When six hours feels like eight, it's easier to operate in the way that you want in your day-to-day.

You can check out Brooklinen's full product lineup here, but we're fans of the Luxe Hardcore Sheet Bundle for every day. It comes with a duvet cover, a fitted sheet, a flat sheet, and four pillowcases for $249.75 in the queen size. Insider Picks' director of content strategy Ellen Hoffman says the sheet bundle is one of the best purchases she's ever made.

In our buying guides, we've also ranked Brooklinen as the maker of the best luxury sheets and the best sateen sheets you can buy. The company's Down Comforter (full/queen, $349) is the best we tried from a startup, and its Classic Duvet Cover (full/queen, $119) is another best-in-its-category on the internet. It also makes spa-worthy, blanket-sized towels ( Bath Sheets, two for $89) and ultra-plush bathrobes ($98), the latter of which Insider Picks reporter Remi Rosmarin says are the little luxury she never thought she needed.

Insider Picks reporter Mara Leighton can't recommend the Twill Hardcore Sheet Bundle (queen, $189) enough. She says they're made to feel like your favorite worn-in flannel. The twill fabrication allows the yarns to move more freely, creating an overall more forgiving, softer experience. As she's mentioned in her review of them, they'll make you wake up and wish you were working from home every day.

When it comes to Brooklinen, our experience is that it's pretty difficult to go wrong. Below, we've put together a list of Brooklinen's best sellers and our personal favorites to help guide your Prime Day shopping.

Save 20% on your entire order during Brooklinen's surprise Prime Day sale.

What it's like visiting one of the world's greatest treasures, the 2,000 year-old mountaintop fortress Masada

Masada, Israel

  • Israel's ancient fortress Masada is an incredible place to visit, on a mountaintop plateau above the Dead Sea.
  • Masada is a UNESCO World Heritage site that's been remarkably preserved for thousands of years, and you can visit it.
  • I climbed up to Masada last summer, and I can't suggest it enough. Here's why!
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Visiting Masada, the ancient fortress built atop a mountain plateau in modern day Israel, is a life-changing experience. No caveats necessary.

There's simply nothing like visiting an ancient mountaintop fortress that overlooks the Dead Sea. It doesn't feel real. But because of its isolation and the arid desert climate, the fortress once occupied by King Herod is a remarkably well-preserved relic of humanity's ancient past, one you can climb to on the same paths used by visiting dignitaries and invading Roman troops.

I did exactly that last July — here's what it was like:

SEE ALSO: What it's like visiting one of the world's greatest treasures: Machu Picchu

Because Masada is located in a relatively remote region of mountain desert next to the Dead Sea, we stayed in Jerusalem when we visited Israel in July 2018.

Israel isn't very large, which makes it relatively easy to drive between major cities and remote destinations like Masada.

You can stay relatively close to the site, but we chose to stay in Jerusalem. It took an hour and a half to reach the base of Masada by car from central Jerusalem, driving through total darkness in the wee hours of the morning.

We had a goal: reach the base of Masada by 4:30 a.m., allowing an hour to hike up the mountain before sunrise at 5:45.

Sunrise at Masada is part of the experience. This is what it looked like at the entrance booth around 4:30 a.m. It was a total relief to see after the ride through pitch black desert morning.

If I'm being totally honest, the drive to Masada at such an early hour was spooky as hell.

My wife and I speak next to no Hebrew or Arabic, and we drove a rented Toyota Corolla through total darkness to a remote part of the desert in a foreign country. And not just any foreign country, but Israel. In the two weeks we were in the country, a Syrian drone was shot down over the Sea of Galilee in the north and Hamas floated incendiary kites from the Gaza Strip in the south, which ignited a response from the Israeli military.

The mixture of complete darkness, next to zero other cars being on the road at such an early hour, and the generally fraught feeling of being in a contentious part of the world really got to both of us. We were relieved to reach Masada relatively quickly, after an Israeli military checkpoint guard waived us through.

Though sunrise was still an hour away, light started filling the valley below Masada by 4:30 a.m.

A handful of palm trees indicate where visitors to Masada can park. As they shrink into the distance on the climb up the mountain, it becomes more and more apparent how grand this ancient fortress was.

There are two options for reaching Masada on foot: the "Snake Path" and the "Roman Ramp." We took the former.

Masada dates to King Herod, a massively influential ruler of ancient Judea, a mountainous region of modern day Israel. The fortress doubled as a palace for Herod during his lifetime, around 100 BCE.

The Snake Path is the older of the two paths, dating all the way back to the time of King Herod. Roman historian Josephus Flavius, writing in the first century CE said of the path, "there is nothing but destruction in case your feet slip, for on each side there is a vastly deep chasm and precipice, sufficient to quell the courage of everybody by the terror it infuses into the mind."

Flavius was big on drama, clearly, but he's not embellishing that much.

Here's a look at the very beginning of the Snake Path:

For some of the path, there's just incline; for other parts there are stairs. Some of that has a railing — a luxury that Herod's visitors wouldn't have enjoyed 2,000 years ago — but much does not.

Even before the sun came out, it was brutally hot and humid. This is not a climb for the faint of heart, though it is certainly doable with persistence and plenty of water. Estimates put the climb at anywhere from 45 to 90 minutes; it took us about an hour at a steady clip, racing to beat the sunrise.

Since the ticket booth to Masada opens an hour before sunrise, the only way to reach the top in time is to move relatively quickly. (There are cable cars that go to the top, but they don't operate until 8 a.m.)

On the way up: resplendent views of the Dead Sea and the valley around Masada.

While panting with exhaustion on the way up to Masada, I would occasionally pause to take in the absolutely ridiculous view that was rapidly appearing behind me — the same view that Roman warriors and ancient Jewish kings marveled at over 2,000 years ago. It's easy to imagine you're on top of the world from here.

By the time we reached the staging area just below the mountain plateau, I was crazy exhausted. My wife, who runs 10K races for fun and smiles in the face of danger, couldn't stop cheesing.

The hike from the base of Masada to the top of the Snake Path is just shy of 1,000 feet. Despite the disparity between our reactions in the photo above, we were both pretty knocked out by the rapid ascent up to Masada.

Bring a refillable water bottle to the hike, filled with water. There are places to refill at the top of the climb, but nothing on the way up. It is crucial that you stay hydrated, as temperatures can reach as high as 110 Fahrenheit when the sun comes out. Sunscreen is similarly crucial, and a few snacks wouldn't hurt either. Exploring Masada takes a few hours, and there's no snack bar. Some folks we saw brought full on picnic gear. Not a bad idea!

Don't let the light fool you — sunrise at Masada is distinct and obvious, separate from first light.

You can just barely see the sun cresting over the mountains in the distance.

After you reach the staging area below Masada, it's a short stairway up to the fortress itself. From there you'll get the best possible views of the sunrise — since the Snake Path climbs up the eastern side of the mountain, you're already facing the right direction.

As the sun slowly rose in the east, the valley below and the Dead Sea lit up — the first glimpse at the vast, gorgeous landscape we drove through in total darkness.

Watching the sun peek up over the mountains, then rapidly fill the sky over the next 10 minutes, was beyond worth the hike alone. It was worth waking up at 3 in the morning and driving through total darkness in a foreign land, and then rushing up a thousand-foot climb. In a two-week trip full of life-changing memories, climbing to Masada just in time for sunrise topped them all.

And that's before we start talking about the incredible fortress itself: Masada.

Masada is situated on a mountaintop plateau. It's a site of major importance to the history of Judaism, having been constructed by a Jewish king.

It was just after 6 a.m. and a group of rabbis gathered under a tent on top of Masada. They were singing passages from the Tanakh — the Jewish bible — in Hebrew.

There were religious groups gathered at Masada, and loads of explorers like my partner and myself, already atop the ruins by 6 a.m. It was never crowded — the hike naturally limits the number of people — but things pick up significantly when the cable cars start running at 8 a.m.

Between the incredible view of the sunrise and the relative quiet at Masada so early, I would strongly suggest following the Snake Path an hour before sunrise.

More than just pretty views, there's a ton of stuff to explore at Masada — much of King Herod's fortress is still intact.

Entire sections of King Herod's fortress remain in remarkably good condition for two millennia of wear. There are storerooms to explore, an incredible viewpoint of the world below Masada, bathhouses, and much more.

Masada feels a bit like Mars.

Admittedly, I've never been to Mars, but I imagine it feels a lot like being at Masada. Nearly everything is one color, contrasted against the stunning blue sky overhead and a sun that feels nuclear at 7 a.m. in mid-July.

In the distance, in any direction, there are ruins begging to be explored.

Some of those ruins housed the Jewish rebels who fled from the Roman Empire in the first century CE.

Roman soldiers overtook Masada in 73 CE; the rebels inside are said to have committed suicide before the Romans could reach them. Reports vary on how many people were inside Masada at the time. Roman historian Josephus Flavius put the number at just under 1,000 people committing suicide; archaeological remains put the number at 28.

The so-called "Roman Ramp" on the western side of Masada was constructed at the time as a means of reaching Masada and overtaking it. The ramp worked and remains effective to this day — it's the secondary path to the top.

As we explored the ruins on the edges of Masada, it was clear why Herod chose the spot for his fortress — 360-degree views of the world around him.

It wasn't until decades after Herod's death that Masada was overtaken. At that point, the occupying force wasn't equipped to fend off a well-supplied Roman advance.

Entire portions of tile mosaics and columns from Herod's time are still in place. It's easy to imagine how gorgeous the palace must have been in its heyday.

Entire rooms are still in shockingly great shape — partially the result of careful restoration, partially the result of being completely isolated in an arid climate.

Here's a look at some of that careful restoration in process; this park worker was already on the job before 8 a.m.

Masada is a UNESCO World Heritage site, meaning it's legally protected by international treaties and recognized by the UN as a site of historic importance. As such, park workers are stationed all over Masada; they offer information and make sure no one's doing anything dumb. And some are working on restoring the park, as seen above.

There's an absurd amount to explore at Masada, and it's easy to get caught up in the distant past.

A big part of getting to Masada at sunrise is getting to explore Masada before it gets too hot. By 9 a.m., temperatures were hitting 100. It's tremendously hard not to get too caught up, though; there are gorgeous ancient ruins to be gawked at around every turn.

This outlook approximates an outlook that King Herod had during his rule (37 to 4 BC).

From 1,000 feet up, Herod had a pretty incredible view of the world around him. He constructed viewing terraces that made it even easier to watch the world from afar. Like so:

Masada, Israel (terraces)

The modern wood and metal incarnation of the viewpoint isn't quite as impressive as the original, re-created in a sculpture nearby, but it offers the same incredible views.

Having explored Masada thoroughly and beginning to feel the heat, we began our descent from the top of the Snake Path:

By this point, around 10 a.m., the heat was extreme — so extreme, in fact, that park authorities outright close the Snake Path to anyone going up. The only way to get to Masada at that point is to take the cable car.

After waking up crazy early, hiking to Masada, and exploring ruins for several hours, the hike down was intense. We had to take breaks for water, and to re-apply sunscreen. Both of us wore hats.

Re-fill your water before exiting Masada down the Snake Patch. Prepare yourself for a surprisingly tough downhill hike in full desert sun with lots of sunscreen, and try to cover as much of your skin as possible with light clothing. An American woman died from dehydration while descending the Snake Path in 2015; please do not underestimate the seriousness of this warning.

As we descended, cable cars passed overhead.

Hours earlier, exhausted, we reached on foot what the cable car would reach in a matter of minutes with little effort. Here's a look at the area where the cable car lets off, at the top of Masada:

Masada, Israel

It is, admittedly, much easier to take a cable car to Masada.

But then you don't get to tell people you climbed to the top of an ancient fortress, along an ancient trail, just to watch the sun rise.

I didn't expect to be so personally affected by the grand history on display at Masada.

As my brilliant, thoughtful mother put it, "The significance of this site is in your DNA, and is emblematic of the unknown generations from various backgrounds who have survived to produce you."

She's dead on. Climbing the same trail that hundreds of generations of humans before me have, looking out with wonder at the world below, just like so many before me have.

And there's the other side, of course. The less beautiful side of history.

Roman emperors and Jewish kings in the Fertile Crescent, frozen in time atop a gorgeous plateau, forever locked in battle. Nothing is left of either — just the ruins of their buildings.

The conflict feels sadly familiar in its context.

Israel Defense Forces officers with semiautomatic weapons guarded the checkpoint we passed on the way to Masada earlier that morning. They're a shockingly common sight all over Israel — a symptom of regional conflict (to massively oversimplify it).

When you visit Masada, it's impossible not to see the vast scope of human history. It's there in front of you, amazingly well preserved, highlighting how infinitely small our modern conflicts are.

Casper sale

If you've been paying attention to subway ads or watching any TV in the last few years, you've probably noticed that a lot of online mattress startups have popped up. They've taken out the middlemen and added costs of showrooms and as a result, offer an often superior mattress for less money and less hassle than you'd find in a brick-and-mortar store.

Of the many startups out there, Casper may be king. And now through Tuesday, July 16, you'll find additional savings during Casper's competing Prime Day 2019 sale.

You can get 15% off any order with a mattress when you apply the code "SIZZLE" at checkout.

The company has become synonymous with successful online startups, and has expanded from its first mattress sale in 2014 to begin selling sheets, pillows, adjustable bed frames, and even dog beds. It also doesn't hurt that every mattress comes with a 100-night money-back guarantee and a 10-year warranty, which is pretty much par for the course in the industry.

In other words, Casper is a grown-up cult-favorite. The company owes a lot of that success to a really great mattress, the convenience of a no-hassle home delivery, and pretty awesome prices. You can read our full review of the original, and recently updated, Casper Mattress here.

On a regular day, you can get the company's best-seller, The Casper, from $595 for a twin size, and the streamlined Essential mattress from as low as $395. The upgraded high-end mattress, The Wave, comes in at $1,295 to start.

So, for example, if you add a queen-size Casper Wave Mattress ($2,495) to your cart, you'll save $374.25 on your purchase.

If you've been meaning to get a new mattress — or bedding of any kind — now is a great time to act. Casper's prices are already low to remain competitive, and sales don't happen every day.

Get 15% off any Casper order with a mattress with the code "SIZZLE" at checkout.

Shopping on Amazon can be tricky business, with constantly shifting prices and dozens of product listings that look the same. Even in the midst of major sales like Amazon Prime Day, the sheer number of sales can make it difficult to figure out which products actually provide the best value.

Whether you're looking for bluetooth headphones, new shoes, or garden tools, you'll need to be ready to sift through hundreds of product listings to find the right item, and even then it's hard to guarantee that you're getting the best price.

Whenever you're shopping on Amazon, you should consider using these two easy online tools to make sure you're getting the best deal possible.

Use CamelCamelCamel.com to see how much a product has been discounted in the past.

CamelCamelCamel.com is a handy price tracking tool that lets you see how far a product's price has dropped in the past. While hundreds of Amazon items are constantly on sale, their prices often fluctuate over time. Even if something is a few dollars off now, CamelCamelCamel will let you know the item's lowest lifetime price so you can judge the deal before you buy.

For example, I recently saw a Hamilton Beach blender on sale for about 20% off, which isn't bad, but checking CamelCamelCamel showed that the same blender was selling for nearly 50% off just a few weeks earlier.

To save yourself some time, you can install the CamelCamelCamel browser extension to get the price tracking information whenever you visit an Amazon product page. As an added bonus, CamelCamelCamel will let you set price alerts so you'll automatically receive an email when a product hits the price you want.

Fakespot automatically scans product listings to check for counterfeit products and fake reviews.

Fakespot will automatically check product reviews to see if other people have received counterfeit products after ordering. This can be particularly important when checking deals on discounted electronics and clothing, as some sellers might try and ship a non-official product in place of the original.

Fakespot will provide you with common keywords that reviewers used to describe the product, like great, cheap, or quality. The app will also try and determine whether the seller is using fake reviews to boost their rating.

Fakespot also has a browser extension like CamelCamelCamel that will pop up automatically when you visit Amazon and a few other websites, like Best Buy, Walmart, TripAdvisor and Yelp.

While these tools will do most of the work, you'll still have to use your own judgement to make sure you're getting the best deal. Happy shopping!

CamelCamelCamel and Fakespot make it much easier to navigate Amazon's sales, but you'll still need to decide which deals are best for you.

How to connect your Apple Watch to a Wi-Fi connection and unlock all of its features

Apple Store Watches

To take full advantage of the many features of an Apple Watch, you must turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your paired iPhone

Below, we detail how to connect your Apple Watch to a Wi-Fi network, and which Apple Watch features are available with and without Wi-Fi.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone XS (From $999 at Apple)

Apple Watch Series 4 (From $399 at Apple)

Apple Watch Series 3 (From $279 at Apple)

Why you need Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on an Apple Watch

The Apple Watch communicates with its paired iPhone using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It can also use a cellular network to stay connected, but only the most recent models have this feature (Series 4 and Series 3). The Watch switches between these options automatically to create the most power-efficient connection.

How to turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on your Apple Watch's paired iPhone

1. Open the Control Center on your iPhone by swiping up from the bottom of any screen, or from the top-right of the screen on iPhone X models.

2. Tap the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth icons, which will be colored blue when turned on and gray when off.

IMG_5498

If you don't have your iPhone nearby, there are still several things you can do with your Apple Watch, such as track workouts using the Workout app, listen to podcasts stored on Apple Watch, make purchases using Apple Pay and (of course) check the time.

With a Wi-Fi or cellular connection, this list expands to include sending and receiving messages using iMessage, checking the weather, streaming music, or listening to the radio.

How to connect your Apple Watch to Wi-Fi

1. Ensure you have watchOS 5 or later, and update your Watch if necessary.

2. Open the Settings app on the Apple Watch (the gray gear icon).

IMG_5501

3. Tap Wi-Fi. If you're already connected to a Wi-Fi network via your iPhone or otherwise, the network name will appear here.

4. If Wi-Fi is turned off (the slider is gray), tap the slider to turn it on. The Apple Watch will automatically search for networks.

5. Choose the network you'd like to join by tapping on it. An Apple Support article notes that the Apple Watch can only connect to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks. It can connect to networks your paired iPhone has joined previously while connected to the Apple Watch via Bluetooth. It won't connect to public networks that require a login or subscription.

IMG_5509.JPG

6. If prompted, enter the password for the Wi-Fi network using Scribble, writing the letters on the Watch screen with your finger. If you need to change a scribbled character, turn the Digital Crown to see more options (including uppercase, lowercase, and alternative letters similar in shape to the one you scribbled).

IMG_5513.JPG

7. Tap "Join."

One of the first things you might want to do when you set up a new Samsung Galaxy S10 is to record a voicemail greeting. Unfortunately, it's not obvious how to do that, so many people make do with the default greeting.

The good news: It's easy to set up a personal voicemail greeting on your Galaxy S10.
