Ring Deals Prime Day 2019

Home security may not be the most exciting dinner party conversation, but whether you want to talk about it or not, it's still really important. Luckily, Prime Day 2019 is happening now, and it features some great deals on systems that can improve the safety of your home without costing you too much.

Amazon Prime Day 2019 Ring deals:

All of Amazon's devices are heavily discounted during Prime Day 2019, including (clearly) its home security system Ring.

Ring is one of the best on the market — the Video Doorbell Pro made our list of best doorbells to buy and is on sale for $169— $80 less than the original price. Prime Day has lots of Ring deals depending on your personal home setup and what you're looking for — a Wi-Fi-enabled doorbell with a camera, a full 14-piece kit, or even a bundle with an Echo (if you don't already have two around your house).

Below, learn more about Ring's devices and services that are on sale right now.

Ring Video Doorbell with a free Amazon Echo Dot

Prime Day 2019 deal: Amazon Echo Dot with Ring Video Doorbell, $69.99 (originally $149.98) [You save $79.99]

If you don't have an Echo, now's the time to grab one in a bundle with the Ring Video Doorbell. You can use the Echo as both a speaker and microphone for your Ring doorbell, but it can, of course, also be used to play music, read the news, make calls, and more.

If you don't want an Echo Dot, you can opt not to get one, but the price for your Ring Video Doorbell will still be $69.99. You're just getting the Dot for free here along with a major deal on the doorbell itself.

Ring Video Doorbell Pro with a free Amazon Echo Dot

Prime Day 2019 deal: Amazon Echo Dot with Ring Video Doorbell Pro, $169 (originally $298.99) [You save $129.99]

This is another valuable bundle with the Echo, but this time it includes the Ring Pro. For someone who wants a sleek and streamlined home security system, the Pro definitely has the advantage on the standard Ring.

If you don't want an Echo Dot, you can opt not to get one, but the price for your Ring Video Doorbell Pro will still be $169. You're just getting the Dot for free here along with a major deal on the doorbell itself.

Ring Video Doorbell

Prime Day 2019 deal: Ring Video Doorbell, $69.99 (originally $99.99) [You save $30]

If you're looking for a starter video doorbell, this is a reasonable price for peace of mind.

It pairs with your Alexa-enabled device, phone, tablet, or PC to announce when motion is detected or the doorbell is pressed, and you can talk to visitors — or even trespassers — through your Echo as the Ring has a microphone and speaker. It works in homes and apartments without additional wiring, too.

Ring Video Doorbell Pro

Prime Day 2019 deal: Ring Video Doorbell Pro, $169 (originally $249) [You save $80]

If you're looking for something with more bells and whistles, try the Pro version.

It has four interchangeable face plates to match your decor better, and is sleeker than the standard Ring Doorbell. You'd need to hard wire the Pro into an existing system, which takes all of 15 minutes, and ensures that you'll never need to change the batteries.

Ring Alarm 14-Piece Kit

Prime Day 2019 deal: Ring Video Doorbell Pro, $169 (originally $249) [You save $80]

For a complete home security system, this 14-piece kit has it all.

It has everything you'd want to keep tabs on every inch of your home — eight sensors to put around doorways and windows, two motion detectors to put around the perimeter of your space, two keypads to put inside your house or apartment to set up the system, a range extender, and a base station.

Ring Spotlight Cam

Prime Day 2019 deal: Ring Spotlight Cam, $139 (originally $199) [You save $60]

For extra security, try getting a camera with lights and sirens. Just don't be fooled by the slim set of LED lights on the side of the camera — the brightness goes up to 300 lumens and the camera itself has a 140-degree horizontal view and 78-degree vertical view, so it will cover and illuminate a good amount of ground.

Ring Stick Up Cam

Prime Day 2019 deal: Ring Stick Up Cam, $124.99 (originally $179.99) [You save $55]

While most of the Ring cameras and systems are meant for outdoor use, this one can be used indoor and outdoor. It can easily be adjusted and mounted on walls, tables, and more, and the white face-plate is pretty minimal too so no one will even know it's there.

A day in the life of a Christie's auctioneer in New York City, who wakes up at 5:45 a.m., lives in Manhattan's richest neighborhood, and says her job is like 'conducting an orchestra'

Tash Per rin christie's

Tash Perrin is an auctioneer at Christie's, the world's largest auction house, which sells billions of dollars of art, jewelry, and luxury goods each year.

In addition to her role as an auctioneer, Perrin serves as Senior Vice President and Senior Director of Trusts, Estates & Wealth Management Services at Christie's International, which means she represents Christie's at conferences across the country and assists clients through major sales around the world.

When she's in New York City and not traveling for work, Perrin told Business Insider she wakes up at 5:45 a.m. every day. She works out with her personal trainer or goes for a run along the Hudson River, sometimes with her dog, Ryndie.

She says being an auctioneer is like "conducting an orchestra," because it requires juggling many different aspects, like keeping track of the numbers and "being the showman."

Here's a look at a typical day in her life.

SEE ALSO: I went to an auction at the world-famous Christie's auction house, which sold $7 billion worth of art, jewelry, and luxury goods in 2018, and it was nothing like I'd expected

DON'T MISS: What it takes to be an art auctioneer at the largest auction house in the world

Tash Perrin has been an auctioneer at Christie's, the largest auction house in the world, for 18 years.

Perrin, who spent seven years at Christie's in London before rejoining the New York office in 2007, also serves as Senior Vice President and Senior Director of Trusts, Estates & Wealth Management Services at Christie's International, which means she represents Christie's at conferences across the country and assists clients through major sales around the world.

Perrin wakes up at 5:45 a.m. every day. When the weather's nice, she goes for a run along the Hudson River.

"I have a trainer that comes to me a couple of times a week, so I'll either meet with him in my building — he comes at 6:15 and I'll work out with him for an hour — or on days particularly when the weather's nice, I might go — either with my dog or on my own — go for a run up the Hudson River Park," Perrin said.

Perrin lives in Tribeca, the richest neighborhood in New York City, but she also has a home in Toronto, where she and husband live together and where she spends most weekends.

She runs about three days per week.

"I feel like it's a nice way to get myself focused on getting in the right mindset for what I'm doing in the day," she said.

Sometimes her dog, Ryndie, accompanies her.

"She's a rescue," Perrin said. "I got her in 2009, so she's almost 10, and she won't leave the house without carrying something in her mouth."

By 7 a.m., she's back her in apartment checking emails.

She also speaks with colleagues in London about a client's selection for the Christie's sale later that day.

Perrin is "definitely a breakfast person," she says. "I can't imagine not having breakfast in the morning."

Perrin always eats breakfast at home.

"Sometimes it's an egg, sometimes it's toast and peanut butter, sometimes it might be granola and fruit that I've made," she said. "I'll have a coffee at home as well and then I'll either get a coffee en route or I'll have another coffee when I get to work."

Perrin also often uses the morning hours to talk on the phone with her husband, who lives primarily at their home in Toronto, while Perrin is based in New York.

"My husband travels a lot for his job as well," Perrin said. "He's in Europe a lot, so in the morning is usually a good time for us to speak, and that just happens to be a time he knows he can get me, because I'm not in the office yet."

At about 8 a.m., Perrin takes the subway from Tribeca to the Christie's New York location at Rockefeller Center. It's about a 25-minute trip.

She says the trains usually aren't too crowded if she leaves early enough.

Depending on the day, she arrives at Christie's between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m.

"What time I get to the office depends on if we have meetings in the morning if we're at a conference or something like that, but generally speaking I'm sort of in anywhere between 8 and 9," Perrin said.

Perrin often starts her workday in New York with a meeting.

Today, she's in the Bid Department to look over the Auctioneer's Book ahead of her auction at 11 a.m.

The auction Perrin will be leading today is a Design auction, so her next meeting is with the Design team at 9:30 a.m.

This meeting is to review and discuss interest in the objects in the auction and to prepare for the sale.

"It's not just the auctioneer breezes in, takes the sale and leaves," Perrin said. "It's very much a collaborative endeavor, and I think that's key to the success of any sale."

In the meantime, Perrin drinks her second coffee of the day.

"I am generally very conscious of using my reusable bottles and mugs," she said.

Perrin's auction starts at 11 a.m.

It's the Christie's Design auction, which includes mirrors, chairs, lamps, tables, sculptures, and other works from the turn of the 20th century to the Contemporary era.

The auction totaled more than $14 million in sales, with the highlight being a 1937 cabinet by Eugène Printz and Jean Dunand that sold for almost $5.5 million after a "protracted bidding war among three telephone bidders." The final sale was ten times its estimated price, Perrin said.

Perrin says her job is like conducting an orchestra.

There are many different aspects to juggle during an auction, Perrin said.

"There's the numeral dexterity, there is being the showman," she said. "I often have discussed it's like being the conductor of an orchestra. You're pulling in the various different elements of the room at various different times to make everybody feel engaged, and you've got to be confident in a lot of the decisions that you're making because the auctioneer, he or she is in charge of the proceedings, of what's happening in the room at that time."

A typical sale lasts between one and three hours, although some can go on much longer — and there are no breaks.

"When you're up there, you're up there," Perrin said. "You're there for the time that you are selling. So you don't necessarily get a break."

When it comes time to sell a particularly high-priced object in an auction, you can feel the tension among the crowd, according to Perrin.

"It's like you can hear a pin drop in a room," she said.

The auction wraps up at about 1:30 p.m., later than expected because the sale was so successful, Perrin said. She has missed her client lunch, but she typically eats something like a grilled salmon and mixed greens salad from Proper Food.

Perrin said she tries to have working lunches whenever she can.

Some days, Perrin helps train her colleagues to become auctioneers. At 2 p.m., after her Design auction, she leads a training for Christie's employees accompanied by a fellow seasoned auctioneer, Richard Lloyd.

In the auctioneering class, Perrin said she gives "a sense of how we would go about taking bids in the room or how you use open hand gesture instead of closed ones, not putting up your hand like you're trying to stop traffic when you're saying, 'Are you bidding?' ... You should use an open gesture."

Auctioneers should look engaged and receptive, Perrin said.

"It's a lot easier to watch somebody for two hours if they're using their arms and they're making it look like they're gesturing you to participate in the sale rather than standing very stiff and not using their arms," she said.

After the training, Perrin has another meeting, this time with her coworkers in the chairman's office, the Estates and Appraisals Department, as well as the Impressionist and Modern and Decorative Arts Departments, to finalize a proposal that has to go out before the end of the day.

"Notice that there are always snacks on the table!" Perrin said.

She has one last meeting at 5 p.m. to prepare for an upcoming client meeting.

Perrin leaves the office at about 7:30 p.m. to meet a client for drinks — the same client she was scheduled to have lunch with earlier in the day.

They go to the Summer Garden at Rockefeller Center.

At 8:30 p.m., she meets friends for dinner.

They go to Locanda Verde in Tribeca, "a favorite spot for a light bite," Perrin said.

By 10 p.m., Perrin is home, where her dog Ryndie is waiting for her arrival.

Perrin's husband, Lorenzo, comes to New York every other week or so, but when he isn't there to take care of Ryndie, Perrin has a dog walker who comes and walks her twice before Perrin gets home.

After an 11 p.m. call with her husband, who is on a business trip in Australia, Perrin goes to bed.

  • Knowing how to factory reset a Google Pixel can help fix issues with your phone, or protect your data before you sell your phone.
  • Before you get started, there are steps you should take to preserve your data, like backing up your information to your Google account.
  • Here's everything you need to know to perform a factory reset on your Google Pixel phone, and recover your data afterwards.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Whether you've run into technical glitches on your phone, or you've sold it and want to make sure the new owner can't access your data, a factory reset is a useful trick to know.

Here's what you should know about factory resetting a Google Pixel, and what you should do before and after to preserve your data.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Google Pixel 3 (From $649.99 at Best Buy)

How to factory reset a Google Pixel phone

Before you can factory reset, it's a good idea to backup your data, and take note of your Google account username and password (so you can access that saved data, whether you plan on using that phone again or getting a new one). For info on how to backup your Google Pixel, check out our article, "How to set up automatic backups for your Google Pixel, and save an unlimited amount of photos and videos."

You should also put your phone on its charger — as resetting can take up to an hour, and you don't want to lose power halfway through.

When you're ready, here's how to reset your Pixel:

1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the gear icon to get into your Settings app.

1 BACKUP GOOGLE PIXEL

2. Select "System" and then "Reset options."

2 FACTORY RESET GOOGLE PIXEL

3. Choose "Erase all data (factory reset)" and then "Reset Phone" (you may have to enter your phone's PIN, password or pattern to confirm this action).

3 FACTORY RESET GOOGLE PIXEL

4. Tap "Erase everything" to get your Pixel back to factory settings.

How to restore a Google Pixel after a factory reset

After the reset process is complete, you'll need to restart your phone and restore the backed up data using your Google account login information.

To do that, you'll need to have a Wi-Fi connection, and follow the on-screen restart instructions. When you get to the "Copy apps and data" section, select "Next" and then "Can't use old phone."

Then, under "Copy another way," tap "Ok" and then "A backup from the Cloud." You'll then be able to sign back into your Google account and access that backed up data by following the remaining instructions.

  • The other similar devices tested had comparatively higher error rates – up to as much as 93%.
  • Still, Fitbits and similar devices are all making an estimate based on your health and activity rate, and their accuracy can vary greatly.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Fitbits use an algorithm that processes a wealth of data in calculating your calories burned, including information gleaned from your daily activities and about your general health.

But how accurate is a Fitbit's calorie burn calculation?

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Fitbit Surge (For $209.95 at Amazon)

Measuring the accuracy of calories burned on a Fitbit

A 2017 study published in the Journal of Personalized Medicine found that Fitbit Surge model had about a 27% margin of error, the lowest margin of error among the seven devices tested.

Other similar devices in the study — including the Apple Watch, PulseOn, and Samsung Gear S2  Basis Peak, Microsoft Band, and Mio Alpha 2 — had higher error rates, up to as high as 93%, rendering them more inaccurate when it comes to calculating calories burned.

Essentially, Fitbits calculate calories burned by making an educated guess based on several known factors.

The first is your Basal Metabolic Rate (or BMR) – the rate at which you burn calories at rest to maintain vital body functions–  which Fitbit estimates based on your age, gender, height, and weight. Herein lies one problem with the measurement, as not everyone of the same age, height, and weight is going to be at the same fitness level, have the same metabolism, and so on. Already the Fitbit is using generalizations when it runs its calorie burning algorithms

With this baseline data, the Fitbit then uses the activities in which it records you engaging, factoring in your heart rate and motion, as well as activities you manually enter into your profile. All of these data together with your BMR serve to create the estimate of your daily calories burned.

Given all the areas for potential error – including tweaked data input by users and variation in Fitbit models – the accuracy of the calories burned calculation will surely vary.

But at the very least, your Fitbitcan still be used as a helpful guideline for planning fitness and weight loss goals.

NOW WATCH: Watch SpaceX's 'most difficult launch ever'

I purchased a 6-month supply of toilet paper on Amazon Prime Day — and it was one of the best decisions I ever made

charmin toilet paper

Last year on Prime Day, I went to sleep early and woke up at 3 a.m. to start covering all the best sales and deals.

As you can probably imagine, I didn't get much of a chance to sit back and shop or stalk Lightning deals. Instead, I had one single objective — to buy as much toilet paper as I could fit in my storage closet and bathroom.

I truly believe that there aren't enough people who take advantage of the other side of Prime Day. With tech devices, TVs, phones, and speakers beating out home necessities as the most wanted and purchased items of Prime Days past, it's obvious that people know this is a great time to shop for bigger ticket items.

But with so many deals on household goods, why aren't more people stocking up on the basics?

I understand people living in metropolitan areas are starved for space, but if I can figure out where to hold six months worth of toilet paper in my small Brooklyn apartment, so can you. Put the rolls inside of your suitcases. Add a roll holder in your bathroom. Whatever space you can make, I highly recommend that you make it — you'll be thanking me the next 40-something times your roll runs out.

I suggest bookmarking your favorite kind now and checking back over the course of Prime Day (July 15-16) to see if your favorite kind goes on sale. And, of course, make sure your Prime membership is up-to-date so you can take advantage of the deals.

Shop all toilet paper on Amazon. This is the best deal on toilet paper we've seen so far:

'Why won't my iPhone ring?': 7 ways to check that your iPhone's sound is working properly

$

on the iphone

  • If your iPhone doesn't ring when someone calls you, there are several potential problems to troubleshoot.
  • The solution might be simple, like Do Not Disturb mode is accidentally enabled, or it could be that your phone is "stuck" in an audio mode that renders it silent.
  • Here are the seven most likely fixes to get your iPhone ringing again.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

It's frustrating when a device doesn't appear to do the one thing that it's designed to do.

If your iPhone isn't ringing when you get a call, there are a few things that might be causing it to not work properly, and most of them are easy to fix on your own.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone XS (From $729 at Apple)

SEE ALSO: The best iPhone for every type of person and budget

Check to see if your iPhone is set to silent

The first few things may seem obvious, but we'll be thorough.

Make sure that your iPhone's Ring/Silent switch (on the left side of the phone, above the volume controls) isn't in the Silent position. It should, of course, be flipped up toward the screen.

If it's down (with a band of red visible) it's set to silent, and might have accidentally been bumped into that position.

Make sure the volume is high enough to hear

Likewise, it's possible the phone's volume is too low to hear it ringing.

Press the Volume up button on the left side of the phone until you can hear something – test the phone by playing music or a video to make sure it's loud enough.

Turn off Do Not Disturb mode

If your phone is in Do Not Disturb mode, incoming calls will not ring and they'll go straight to voicemail (unless you set up exceptions for specific phone numbers).

To make sure Do Not Disturb mode is not enabled, swipe down from the top right of the screen to open the Control Center screen. Make sure the Do Not Disturb button, which looks like a quarter moon, is not highlighted.

If a specific number won’t ring, make sure it isn’t blocked

Apple gives you the ability to block specific phone numbers, which is handy if you get a lot of telemarketing and other spam phone calls. Make sure you didn't accidentally block a number by accident, though.

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Tap "Phone."

3. Tap "Call Blocking and Identification."

4. In the list of blocked calls, see if you have accidentally blocked any numbers. To unblock it, swipe it to the left and tap "Unblock."

For more information on how to block spam calls, check out "How to stop robocalls and other spam calls from reaching your iPhone."

Make sure there isn’t a problem with your ringtone

We're starting to get into pretty unlikely territory now, but it's worth investigating your ringtone to make sure that the file isn't corrupted, or the ringtone itself isn't just silence.

Why would it be silent? Well, one tactic that some people use to deal with torrents of telemarketing calls is to configure their phone with a ringtone that's literally just several seconds of silence for all phone calls except for friends and family.

1. Open the Settings app.

2. Tap "Sounds & Haptics."

3. Tap "Ringtone."

4. Tap the ringtone that's currently selected (with the checkmark) to make sure it plays. Or just select a different ringtone.

Check to see if any custom ringtones aren't working

If the phone won't ring for a specific caller and that person isn't blocked, then check to see if they have a custom ringtone that isn't working:

1. Start the Contacts app.

2. Tap the contact whose number won't ring.

3. See if there's a Ringtone section with a ringtone selected. If so, tap it and choose a different ringtone, and tap "Done."

For more information on custom ringtones, check out "How to make custom ringtones for your iPhone.

Make sure the iPhone isn’t stuck in headphone mode

It's possible that your phone is "stuck" in a mode in which it thinks it's playing the ringtone, but it's sending it to a device that isn't connected, like earbuds that aren't plugged in or a Bluetooth device that isn't turned on.

Here are some steps you can take to "wake up" your iPhone's audio connection so it's working properly:

  • Try playing music or a video. If, after the earlier steps, you still hear nothing, it might be stuck in headphone mode. If sounds other than ringtones play fine, though, skip this section – it's not stuck.
  • Plug earbuds into your phone and remove them again to coax the phone into recognizing there are no earbuds plugged in.
  • Make sure you're not connected to another audio device. Swipe down from the top right to display the Control Center, and tap the Airplay icon in the music pane (it looks like a triangle with three circles). If anything other than the iPhone is selected, choose the iPhone.
  • Enable and disable Airplane mode – it's the airplane icon in the Control Center.
  • As a last resort, restart your iPhone.

Get your iPhone serviced

If none of the other troubleshooting tricks solved your problem, you probably have a hardware problem with your iPhone, like a damaged speaker or a fried port, so talk to Apple support.

Amazon Prime Day 2019 has officially arrived, and some of the best deals are on Amazon's devices and services, including four months of access to the premium streaming service Amazon Music Unlimited for just $1.

If you're also considering getting an Amazon Echo during Prime Day, now would be a really good time. Amazon is offering six months of Amazon Music Unlimited to anyone who orders an Echo device during the sale (a $47.94 value).

<a target="_merchant" href="https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Echo-And-Alexa-Devices/b/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&node=9818047011&linkCode=ll2&tag=biip_071619_amazon-day-prime-20&linkId=17f33a3ce96d7b0cfdb9eafda6f7ab5e&language=en_US" data-analytics-product="" data-analytics-product-module="Product Prime Day" data-analytics-product-area="insider-pick-primeday-button" data-analytics-product-price="1" class="insider-pick-button insider-pick-button--large">Shop Amazon Echo Devices</a>

If you have an Echo device, you've probably asked Alexa to play a song for you. Somewhat frustratingly, you may have noticed that there's a distinct limit to what she can play if you're not a member of Amazon Music Unlimited. As consolation for your lack of membership, she generally offers a short sample of the song that cuts off just as you start getting into it.

If you'd like to avoid this happening again, it's worth considering a membership to Amazon Music Unlimited, especially right now. Though it'll usually run you a monthly fee of $7.99, Amazon is offering new subscribers four months of access to the service for $1. This promotion is live now through 11:59 p.m. PT on July 16, when Prime Day 2019 ends.

And it's not just on your Echo devices that you can listen to the millions of songs on the platform. Similar to Spotify, you can listen commercial-free on pretty much any device — including your computer, tablet, and phone — via an app that curates personalized listening channels and playlists for every mood.

The $1 Amazon Music Unlimited access is only going on for a limited time, so new members should take advantage of the deal before the offer is over. Once the promotion ends, you can either cancel your membership or continue to pay the full $7.99 rate.

Considering that this trial will set you back only $1, it'd be a shame to subject yourself to all those half-played samples for the next four months.

What is on sale on Prime Day?

In short, most types of products. We're rounding up the best deals across tech, home, beauty, fashion, and more here, but you can also shop by these specific roundups:

Last year, the Fire TV Stick with Alexa Voice Remote was the top-selling product on the site. In 2019, there are tons of deals on Amazon devices like the Kindle, vacuums, and smart-home products.

The most popular items that Business Insider readers bought were Kindle UnlimitedAudible, and Amazon Music Unlimited memberships; noise-canceling headphones from SonyBose, and Sennheiser; and a variety of Amazon devices. We expect these deals will be popular again this year.

Amazon raised the price of a Prime membership last year, but access to Amazon Prime Day deals is just one of the many reasons why the membership is still worth it at the new price.

Being a Prime member also means you can enjoy a ton of other benefits, so if you aren't signed up already, now's the perfect time to join.

Amazon has a no-fee credit card Prime members should strongly consider — if only for the 5% cash back on all Amazon and Whole Foods purchases

prime

  • With 5% cash back on all Amazon and Whole Foods purchases, the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card is a must-have for existing Prime members who shop frequently on the site.
  • It's even more rewarding during Prime Day 2019 (July 15-16), since you'll earn 6% back on purchases at Amazon and Whole Foods.
  • With no annual fees, 0% APR for the 15 months, and an instant $80 gift card for applicants who are approved, the Amazon Prime Rewards card pays for itself instantly, with no additional costs.
  • Shopping outside of Amazon earns 2% back on gas, restaurants, and drug stores, and 1% on everything else, making this an excellent all-around card.
  • See all of the best deals on Prime Day 2019 »

With no annual fee, and an impressive 5% back on all Amazon and Whole Foods purchases (with a Prime membership), the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card is the highest tiered card of the four offered by e-commerce giant.

While a $119 annual Amazon Prime membership fee might deter some people (though we think the cost is justified for these 14 reasons), the card has virtually no downsides for existing Prime members. With points redeemed seamlessly for cash on the Amazon site, the earning system is one of the most straightforward of any rewards card and adds instant savings for big users of the site.

Benefits of the Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card

When it comes to rewards credit cards, the two important factors to keep in mind are how do you earn points and how do you burn points? And when it comes to the Amazon Prime Rewards, the answer for both is by shopping on Amazon Prime.

If you're not a Prime member, the first question is whether or not you want to pay for the service. Amazon's Prime currently costs $119 a year, or $12.99 a month, and has become tremendously popular, with Amazon disclosing it had reached 100 million subscribers worldwide last year. The free two-day shipping service has grown as Amazon has added streaming services via Prime video and exclusive offers to its members on Prime Day. New subscribers can sign up for a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime here.

While the benefits justify the cost for many, we wouldn't argue joining Prime just to earn the 5% on this card (unless you spend over $6,000 a year on Amazon). If you don't plan on enrolling in Prime but still want to earn cash for using the site, we'd recommend checking out the standard Amazon Rewards Visa Signature Card, which earns 3% back on Amazon purchases.

However, for those who are existing Prime users, the Amazon Prime Rewards is definitely worth it.

There is no additional cost for the card, and you instantly and seamlessly earn 5% on every purchase made through Amazon and Whole Foods. Your card is automatically linked to your account, and Amazon makes it incredibly easy for you to use your points toward purchases. Available points are displayed at every checkout, where you have the option to put them toward your current purchase with the click of a button. No necessary portals, no redemption process.

If you're like me, there's no single company you'd rather have this deal with, as Amazon is basically a proxy for the entire online merchant ecosystem.

Virtually everything is available there, and it appears to only be growing in inventory. For frequent shoppers of the platform, this is basically like earning 5% cash back on everything you buy — clothes, holiday and wedding gifts, or large electronics and furniture purchases. If you are living with roommates, you can order household essentials that are split between everyone and reap 5% while being the roommate who conveniently takes care of everything.

You can also earn cash back bonuses on certain specific products or categories by exploring the Prime Card Bonus Offers page. When you purchase something through that page, you'll get anywhere from 10–20% back.

The card also added its 5% cash back to Whole Foods purchases after the company was acquired by Amazon. This not only makes it one of the highest earning grocery cards we've seen (to those with loyalty to the brand), but its 2% back, restaurants, drug stores, and gas stations puts it on par with many all-around spending cards.

Other Visa Signature benefits

The Amazon Prime Rewards is a Visa Signature Card, which grants it a number of travel, auto, and purchase protections you expect from other Visa Signature cards. These include:

  • Travel accident insurance: When you pay for transportation with your Amazon Prime Rewards card, you are eligible to receive accidental death or dismemberment coverage of up to $500,000.
  • Emergency assistance and roadside dispatch: Roadside services cover everything from tows and jump starts, to tire changes, to gas delivery. The Visa Benefit Administrator Roadside is available for legal and medical need during emergency assistance. However, you are responsible for any paid services incurred.
  • Lost or delayed luggage insurance:If you or an immediate family member's luggage is damaged or lost by the carrier, you're covered up to $3,000 per passenger. You can also be reimbursed for baggage delays of six hours for up to $100 a day, for three days.
  • Auto rental collision damage waiver: Covers theft and collision damage for most rental cars in the US and abroad. Coverage is secondary to your personal insurance.
  • Purchase protection and extended warranty: New purchases are covered for 120 days against damage or theft up to $500 per claim and $50,000 per account. Eligible warranties of three years or less are also extended an additional year.

The bottom line

The Amazon Prime Rewards Visa Signature Card is recommended for anyone who has an Amazon Prime membership. If you're already paying for the service, it's hard to justify not getting an additional 5% in cash back, unless you have a hard credit card limit.

There is no annual fee for the card, and the $80 gift card received upon approval provides an immediate cash incentive. Amazon has extended their 5% eligibility to Whole Foods, and it's not improbable to think the card's benefits will extend to other subsidiaries should Amazon continue their acquisition spree. The 2% back at restaurants, drug stores, and gas adds versatility to what is already highly efficient company-specific card.

Dyson is running a bunch of Prime Day deals on vacuums and air purifiers — here's what's on sale

$

Dyson Air Multiplier 2

The venerable Dyson vacuum is the subject of many a conversation that usually starts with nods of intense concentration and ends with the question, "Wait, it costs how much?" Dyson's famous cordless vacuums have always been an investment, but according to passionate fans, they're completely worth it for how well they clean their dust- and debris-ridden homes.

The powerhouse vacuums — we've tried and loved models like the V8 Animal and the new V11 Torque Drive— don't go on sale often, but if history indicates anything, Dyson will be discounting some during Amazon's annual sale event, Prime Day. And we were right.

Amazon is currently running these Prime Day 2019 Dyson deals:

Last year, we thought the best deal was the Dyson V8 Absolute Cordless Stick Vacuum, which was on sale for $364.99. Shoppers saved $135 from the original price of $499.99. Granted, $365 is still a lot to pay for a vacuum, but that's a 27% discount off a product designed to make your life a little easier. This lightweight, hassle-free vacuum has a 40-minute run time, and its instant-release trigger means you're only using up the battery power when the vacuum is actually in use.

This year, the best vac deal is the Dyson V7 AnimalPro 2 set— which can be used whether or not you have a pet. It's an older version of our favorite V8, but when it costs just $279.99 after a 30% discount, it's a total steal — for a Dyson at least. The brand's air purifiers are also on sale — the Dyson Air Multiplier Table Fan is 42% off right now, so it's just $189.99.

Below, learn more about Dyson's vacuums and air purifiers that are on sale right now.

Dyson Ball Animal 2 Total Clean Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Prime Day 2019 deal: Dyson Ball Animal 2 Total Clean Upright Vacuum Cleaner, $349.99 (originally $599)[You save $249.01]

Dyson is known for its innovative ball design, and this one is a true classic. Like with the V7 Animal model on Prime this year, you can use this vac even if you don't have any pets.

It's a standard upright vac, but the ball design makes it easy to maneuver around corners and in between chairs and tables. The $350 price tag isn't cheap, but it's reasonable given the Dyson reputation, high-caliber specs, and extra accessories for a full deep clean.

Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Air Purifier

Prime Day 2019 deal: Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Air Purifier, $399.99 (originally $599) [You save $199.01]

Featuring Dyson's signature open design, the device will clean and filter out pollutants in your air while providing nice cool air during the summer or cozy warm vibes in the winter.

It's Wi-Fi-enabled and compatible with Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa, so it's easy to use with most smart-home setups. Even if you forget to tell them to turn off the air purifier, the Pure Hot + Cool's auto mode will do it for you.

Dyson V7 AnimalPro+ Cordless Vacuum Cleaner

Prime Day 2019 deal: Dyson V7 AnimalPro+ Cordless Vacuum Cleaner, $279.99 (originally $399.99)[You save $120]

Even though the Dyson V7 AnimalPro+ is an older model of our favorite V8, it's a seriously good deal with many of the same specs.

The only difference is the motor as the V8 is slightly more powerful and has a 40-minute run time as opposed to the V7's 3o minutes. We don't think you'll notice it so with the V7 being just $279.99, it's a total steal. Last year's V8 Absolute model was on sale for $364.99, which was a great deal, but this is arguably better for your wallet.

Shoppers will save $120 off the original price, but won't miss out on the accessories. The vac can be used as the usual cordless stick way, or as a handheld device for portability. It also comes with a standard cleaning head, mini motorized tool for pet hair (or just regular human hair, I guess), dirt brush, combo tool, and two different crevice tools, and a docking station so the vac can be charged upright on a wall.

Dyson Pure Cool Air Purifier

Prime Day 2019 deal: Dyson Pure Cool Air Purifier, $329.99 (originally $449) [You save $119.01]

The Dyson Pure Cool is a cooling fan and air purifier all rolled into one. It has the same sleek design as the Dyson table top fan that's on sale this year, which sets it slightly apart from the taller, thinner design of the Pure Hot + Cool Air Purifier.

The Pure Cool constantly monitors the air quality in large rooms and automatically turns on to clean the air, or you can manually control it via the Dyson Link app, Amazon Alexa, or Apple's Siri.

Dyson Air Multiplier Table Fan

Prime Day 2019 deal: Dyson Air Multiplier Table Fan, $189.99 (originally $328.90) [You save $109.01]

A table-top fan that doesn't look like an eyesore, this almost doubles as modern decor.

It has 10 fan settings and can be programmed to turn off at different intervals from 15 minutes to nine hours. There are three colorways — black, blue, and white/silver — though we'd wager any of them would look great at home or the office.

The biggest mistake millionaires make when dating is trying too hard, Mairead Molloy of Berkeley International, who is based in London, told Business Insider. "There's no point in overdoing it or being totally lavish," she said. "Be yourself without being overwhelming."

Amy Andersen of San Francisco-based Linx Dating calls this "peacocking," or overdoing it early in the relationship. "Showing up in a Ferrari for example, or talking way too much about career success and history at the very beginning, not only might come off arrogant but also does not highlight some of their more important personal qualities," she said. "It might also very well attract exactly the wrong kind of people."

As Janis Spindel of Janis Spindel Serious Matchmaking Inc. told Business Insider: "They don't want women after their money and to fall in love for the wrong reason ... so then why would you send your driver to pick her up in a brand new Bentley?"

Read more: I talked to 6 elite matchmakers, and they said the biggest difference between dating as a millionaire and an average Joe is also the most obvious one

To illustrate her point, Spindel, whose clients are men only, read me a text a client forwarded her: He was quick to mention the fact that he owns multiple houses, including one in the Hamptons.

"Don't brag about your houses," she said. Her daughter, Carly Spindel, also a matchmaker at the same company, seconded this: "We tell [clients] to never to talk about money and not to lead with money."

Millionaires should avoid talking about their assets, April Davis of Luma Search in New York City, told Business Insider. "You would think this is obvious, but they always do and it always comes off like they're bragging in some manner," she said. "It's best to keep the conversation about ideas and try to get the other person to talk about themselves. Most people like talking about themselves."

Acting entitled or picky

The biggest issue, Davis said, is often entitlement. "Often times people who have a lot of money are used to always getting their way and calling the shots," she said. "When you're dating someone who also has money or doesn't really care what your job or status is, then that is different than how you may be used to being treated at the office or in other circumstances."

Patti Stanger of Millionaire's Club told Business Insider that dating mistakes depend on the type of millionaire. She commonly sees the "nerd millionaire, who didn't get the cheerleader in high school and now has an out-of-whack sense of entitlement and expectations beyond measure."

Treating the date like a job interview

Entitlement can make millionaires picky, leading some to approach the date in the wrong way. A typical mistake females make is treating the date like a job interview, Andersen said.

"Guys don't want to have a pure career comparison discussion — they might well put you in the friend zone or see it as a networking opportunity and not a date," she said. "This is about setting the stage for romance and flirting, not spewing your professional accolades (and this includes both genders)."

But regardless of money or status, many people look at dating all wrong. A date isn't the opportunity to assess whether the person is "The One," according to Joanna Coles, former editor of Cosmopolitan and Marie Claire magazines and the book "Love Rules."

Coles previously told Business Insider's Shana Lebowitz that people should instead use a date as a chance to see if you actually like the person and would befriend them. Instead of viewing dating as a zero-sum game, you should find someone you want to hang out with — "maybe just once, maybe more than once; maybe in a romantic context, maybe in a platonic one," wrote Lebowitz.

Here's everything you need to know about CBD, the cannabis compound that's in everything from coffee to ice cream and could soon be a $16 billion business

By Chloe CBD CREDIT Leslie Kirchhoff2

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is popping up everywhere, from creams to coffee to prescriptions. CBD is one of the key compounds in cannabis plants, though it doesn't cause marijuana's characteristic high. It's being touted as a treatment for all kinds of ailments, but the evidence for some uses is thin.

Meanwhile, CBD is already a $1 billion industry, and some on Wall Street think it could reach $16 billion, aided in part by a recent change in US law that made some CBD legal.

James Dyson

The billionaire behind bagless vacuum cleaners just set a real-estate record in the world's most expensive city.

James Dyson, 72, the founder of Dyson, and his wife, Deirdre Hindmarsh, recently bought the most expensive penthouse in Singapore for $54.2 million, according to Singapore's Business Times newspaper. The British billionaire has a net worth of about $12.7 billion, according to Bloomberg.

The deal surpassed the $44 million Singaporean penthouse that the Facebook cofounder Eduardo Saverin purchased in 2017.

Dyson's penthouse at the Wallich Residence spans the top three floors of Singapore's tallest building, Guoco Tower, and boasts amenities like an infinity pool, a barbecue pit, a hot tub, and a private elevator, according to Bloomberg.

According to CNN, other penthouse perks include a concierge team that manages everything from chartering private jets and yachts to organizing dinner parties.

The purchase comes months after news broke that the Dyson headquarters was moving to Singapore from the UK.

It's the latest in a series of other major real-estate transactions so far in 2019. In June, Business Insider's Paige Leskin reported that Jeff Bezos was said to have purchased a New York City penthouse along with two units below it for an estimated $80 million, making it the second-most-expensive home to close in the city this year.

New York City's real-estate record belongs to Ken Griffin, the hedge-fund billionaire who bought a $238 million penthouse, the most expensive home ever sold in the US, in January.

'What is the Amazon Echo Dot?': Everything you need to know about Amazon's compact smart speaker

$

amazon echo dot

The Amazon Echo Dot is a smaller version of the original Amazon Echo smart speaker. Looking more like a hockey puck than the Echo's original cylindrical shape, the Dot measures a little over 3 inches in diameter and is nearly 1.5 inches high.

It has a few buttons on the top which control volume, mute the speaker, and wake the device to listen for a question or command (though you don't need to touch the Dot to use it; it is designed to primarily respond to voice commands).

dot 1

Like the original Amazon Echo, the Echo Dot is a voice-controlled smart speaker that uses an artificially intelligent personal assistant named Alexa to perform a broad range of activities. Alexa can play music, set alarms, control other "smart" devices in the home, play games, and answer questions by searching for information on the internet, just to name a few of its many skills.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Amazon Echo Dot (From $22 at Amazon)

Amazon Echo (From $49.99 at Amazon)

Amazon Echo Spot (From $129.99 at Amazon)

Amazon Echo Plus (From $109.99 at Amazon)

Amazon Echo Show (From $159.99 at Amazon)

How the Amazon Echo Dot is different from other Echo devices (and the same)

The Echo Dot is different from the Echo primarily in that it's missing the large speaker which takes up most of the original Echo's cylinder. It has a much smaller, somewhat lower quality speaker. But it can be easily connected to an external speaker, either via a standard audio cable or by Bluetooth. The original Echo cannot be connected to an external speaker.

Echo Dot Audio Jack

Otherwise, the Dot is identical to the Echo — it can perform all the functions of any other member of the Amazon Echo family. The Alexa personal assistant works the same, and can draw on the same library of skills and activities.

If you already have one kind of Echo product and want additional speakers for other rooms in your home, you can mix and match. An Amazon Echo Dot can work in a household with other Amazon Echo and Echo Dot speakers.

While Amazon Echo products can't "hand off" information from one device to another and aren't aware of each other in the same home, they do have microphone technology that ensures the Echo that's closest will receive and act on voice commands — convenient if you have several Echo products in a small home or apartment.

Other speakers in the Amazon Echo family

Amazon has been expanding the size of the Amazon Echo product family in the last couple of years. In addition to the Amazon Echo, Amazon now also offers the Echo Plus, which is similarly shaped like a cylinder, but has an integrated Zigbee hub to control Zigbee-compatible smart home devices.

The Echo Spot is what you would get if you added a display to an Echo Dot. Amazon intends the Spot to be primarily used on a nightstand as a high-tech alarm clock that can respond to voice commands and display information on the small screen.

dot 3

Finally, the Echo Show is an Echo packaged into a tablet shape, designed to sit on a desk or table with a 7-inch screen. Amazon has positioned this Echo as ideal for making video calls and watching videos.

How to set up any Amazon Echo device and customize its settings

amazon echo being set up

For many people, an Amazon Echo (or one of its related devices, like a Dot) is an essential part of any modern smart home.

Once configured, you can play music, get the news, control devices, and much more, all using voice commands. And thankfully, setup is quite simple.

Here's what you need to know.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Amazon Echo (From $49.99 at Amazon)

Amazon Echo Dot (From $22 at Amazon)

How to set up an Amazon Echo

1. Start by installing the Amazon Alexa app on your mobile device — there is a version of Alexa for the iPhone and Alexa for Android. You may not use this app often, but it's essential for the initial setup.

2. Plug in your Amazon Echo. Wait a few moments for the illuminated ring at the top of the device to turn orange. This indicates it's ready to be set up. If the ring turns purple, press and hold the Action button (the button with a dot in the center) for several seconds until the ring turns orange again.

amazon echo ready for setup

3. Open the Alexa app on your mobile device and tap the three horizontal lines in the upper right corner of the screen (the "hamburger menu").

4. Tap "Add Device."

5. On the Setup screen, tap "Amazon Echo."

6. Tap the kind of Echo device you are setting up — Echo, Echo Dot, Echo, and so on.

echo 2

7. Follow the directions on the setup screens. You will need to tap "Continue" and then, to confirm that you see the orange glow on the Echo, tap "Continue" again.

8. You will be directed to connect your phone to the Echo's network. To do this, return to your phone's Home screen and go to Settings. Tap "Wi-Fi," and choose the network that starts with "Amazon-."

echo 3

9. Go back to the Home screen and start the Alexa app again. Follow the final instruction to complete setup, including choosing your Wi-Fi network for the Echo to connect to. Your mobile device will automatically reconnect to your Wi-Fi network when it's done.

How to set up voice commands for your Amazon Echo

Now that the basic setup is complete, you can start to use your Amazon Echo. While most Echo models have some control buttons on top (such as mute, volume, and an Action button to give commands), most of the time you will interact with your Echo entirely via voice.

To give a command, always start with the wake word "Alexa," as in "Alexa, what time is it?" If you prefer, you can configure your Echo to respond to another word, like "Echo," "Amazon," or "Computer" instead. To do that:

1. Start the Alexa app, tap the hamburger menu at the top left, and tap "Settings."

2. Tap "Device Settings" and then tap the Echo you want to configure.

3. Tap "Wake Word" and tap the word you want this Echo to respond to.

echo 4

How to customize your Amazon Echo's settings

Your Echo is now ready to respond to your commands and questions. There are a lot of settings you might want to configure, though, to make Alexa more helpful. You can find these settings in the Alexa app by tapping the hamburger menu and then "Settings." Be sure to explore these settings. Here are some settings you should be sure to look at:

  • The Echo's location. Your Echo will work best when it knows where in the world it's located, such as for weather reports. You can set the location by tapping Settings, Device Settings, and the name of your Echo. Then tap "Device Location."
  • Your locations. If you ask your Echo about traffic conditions, it's helpful if it knows the address of places like home and work. You can find these by tapping Settings, and then "Your Locations."
  • Link music services. If you want to play music through your Echo, be sure to configure it with your favorite music services, like Pandora and Spotify. You can find this by tapping Settings and then Music.
  • Set up your news. Echo offers a "flash briefing" when you ask it to tell you then news. You can specify which news services it should pull your news summary from by tapping Settings and then Flash Briefing.

There are a lot of other settings you can configure, so be sure to explore the Settings menu on the Alexa app.

iRobot Roomba 671

Prime Day 2019 deal: iRobot Roomba 671 RoboVac, $289.99 (originally $349.99) [You save $60]

The Roomba 671, $289.99 (originally $349.99) has a three-stage cleaning system, multi-surface brushes, and a specialized edge-sweeping brush to thoroughly clean your floors, particularly the areas you can't reach by yourself. Its sensors can determine what areas need more concentrated cleaning and help the robot smoothly navigate around furniture. With the free app, you can schedule cleanings even if you're out of the house, and if you're a smart home user, feel free to call on the Roomba's help through Alexa or Google Assistant.

iRobot Roomba 690

Prime Day 2019 deal: iRobot Roomba 690 RoboVac, $229.99 (originally $374.99) [You save $145]

The iRobot Roomba 690 has the perks of the 671 like the three-stage cleaning system, multi-surface brushes, in-app cleaning schedule, and a specially designed Edge Sweeping brush that gets into corners at the right 27-degree angle. But the Dirt Detect technology is better, so you'll get a superior clean using the 690 than the 671.

iRobot Roomba 891

Prime Day 2019 deal: iRobot Roomba 891 Robot Vacuum, $299.99 (originally $449) [You save $149.01]

The iRobot Roomba 891 has all the features of the 690 but with as five times the amount of suction, a more efficient cleaning process thanks to a few tech upgrades, and an advanced version of the Dirt Detect included in the 690. It still has the in-app scheduling for convenience.

iRobot Roomba 980

Prime Day 2019 deal: iRobot Roomba 980 RoboVac, $549.99 (originally $899) [You save $349.01]

This is more expensive than the rest but still a relatively great deal, with almost $350 in savings.

The iRobot Roomba 980 has tangle-free dual multi-surface brushes, an edge-sweeping brush, and in-app scheduling. But the standout features are that it has 10 times more power than the Roomba 671 (which already has 5 times more power than the 891) and gives you a deeper clean on carpets.

It has an advanced version of the Dirt Detect tech found in the 690, but, unlike other models, this one can recharge itself and then resume cleaning an entire level of your home.
