  • The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale officially beings on July 19, but Nordstrom cardholders can gain early access from July 12 to July 18. Simply sign in and shop using your Nordstrom credit card.
  • Shopping during the early-access sale rather than the public sale will give you first dibs on the best items in the sale. You won't have to worry about items being sold out or sizes being unavailable.
  • Since footwear will be one of the first categories to sell out, we rounded up 20 of the best men's sneakers on sale.

From July 19 through August 4, Nordstrom will open up its biggest sale of the year to the public with thousands of deals on fashion, footwear, home goods, and beauty products.

If you're worried about availability of the items you want to buy, Nordstrom is giving cardholders early access to the sale from now until July 18. For those who don't have a card, you can apply online and get instant approval, which means you can shop the sale right away.

Much like men's apparel and dress shoes, sneakers will be one of the first categories shoppers go after, so you'll want to grab your favorite styles before the early-access window closes. Once the sale opens to the public, certain items will either sell out completely or sizing will become very sparse.

To help you shop even quicker, we rounded up 20 of the best men's sneakers on sale, below.

You can also check out other Nordstrom Anniversary Sale deals for each of the following categories, add some things to your wish list, or shop them if you have a Nordstrom Card.

YouTuber Tana Mongeau confirmed a July 28 wedding date with fiancé Jake Paul at VidCon

YouTuber couple Tana Mongeau and Jake Paul are planning on getting married in a ceremony taking place July 28, the couple announced Saturday at VidCon.

Paul came out on stage Saturday in a surprise appearance when Mongeau was participating in a question-and-answer session. It was one of the last events scheduled for the three-day VidCon event in Anaheim, California, that celebrates online video creators.

Paul read a poem he had written that was full of sexual innuendos, including rhyming "Tana" with "banana." The poem ended with Paul announcing their wedding date was planned for July 28, and the announcement was met with screams and cheers from the audience.

Read more:YouTube stars Jake Paul and Tana Mongeau appear to be engaged, but no one can tell if their relationship is for real. Here's what we know so far.

The couple announced in late June they had gotten engaged at Mongeau's 21st birthday celebration, during which Paul also bought Mongeau a car worth more than $120,000

But the sudden news of their engagement took social media by surprise, and many speculated that the entire relationship was faked. The two had reportedly only been dating for two months before then, and the relationship itself seems to have started in the first place as a joke for YouTube videos.

But during the Q-and-A session Saturday, Mongeau asserted that their relationship is real, especially because they're both "f---ed in the head in the same ways."

"No matter what I do, someone is going to try to negate it," Mongeau said. "You're crazy Jake Paul, but you're crazy like me."

The last year for Mongeau has been eventful, to say the least. When VidCon was held last year, Mongeau wasn't invited and instead hosted a separate fan convention called TanaCon right nearby to compete. However, the planned TanaCon was a complete disaster, and drew comparisons to the failed Fyre Festival in 2017.

Mongeau was also in an incredibly public relationship with Bella Thorne, but the two split in February after a year of dating. After Paul and Mongeau announced their engagement, Thorne posted a video of herself crying with the caption, "When ur ex gets engaged."

Depression is on the rise among Gen Z — and teen girls are experiencing the worst of it

America's teens are depressed.

The number of US teens ages 12 to 17 who said they experienced at least one major depressive episode in 2017 increased by 59% since 2007. That's a total of 3.2 million teens, or 13% of the entire cohort, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of data from the 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

The most prominent symptom of major depression is "a severe and persistent low mood, profound sadness, or a sense of despair," according to Harvard Medical School.

Teen girls have it the worst — they're three times as likely as teen boys to deal with depression. Per Pew, 20% of teen girls cited having a major depressive episode in 2017, compared to 7% of teen boys. The percentage of teen girls (66%) who recently experienced depression also increased at a faster rate than it did for teen boys (44%) from 2007 to 2017. However, teen girls are more likely to receive treatment, Pew found.

Depression might be related to the daily pressures teens are facing. A 2018 Pew study found that 61% of teens of any gender felt pressure to get good grades, 29% felt pressure to look good, and 28% felt pressure to fit in socially.

Teen years are an important indicator of mental health as a young adult. Teens who feel more connected, defined as engaged, supported, and cared for, at home and school are less likely to experience mental health problems and risks, reported HealthDay News, citing a recent CDC study published by the journal Pediatrics.

Overall, the mental health outlook isn't looking good for younger generations — depression is also on the rise among millennials.

New York Times columnist David Brooks shares his candid advice for ignoring your ego, overcoming loneliness, and saying 'yes' to everything

  • Dan Schawbel is a bestselling author, speaker, entrepreneur, and host of the "5 Questions with Dan Schawbel" podcast, where he interviews world-class humans by asking them just five questions in under 10 minutes.
  • He recently interviewed political and cultural commentator David Brooks, an op-ed columnist for the New York Times.
  • Brooks said that you shouldn't "live in the ego," where you find yourself driven to just make a mark, and don't actually commit to anything.
  • Brooks also discussed the loneliness he felt in the moment where he had "total freedom," and how it drove him to really commit to himself to relationships and the things that he was passionate about.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

While you might think famed New York Times op-ed columnist David Brooks has it all, he reached a low point in his life and had to get back on his feet. I had the opportunity to speak with David on my podcast, 5 Questions with Dan Schawbel, about his new book "The Second Mountain," which chronicles his journey towards a more fulfilling life in a world that is increasingly self-centered. The first mountain of David's life was focused on building a successful career, but now he's found that his second mountain is about cultivating healthy relationships.

In the below conversation, he talks about why you don't need to achieve your goals before helping other people, why commitment is important to living a meaningful life, how to overcome loneliness, why attachment is much better than having personal freedom, and gives his best career advice.

Dan Schawbel: Do we have to achieve personal goals before serving others?

David Brooks: No, some people do their second mountain first. What I do think you have to do is not live in the ego. Like a lot of people, I grew up wanting to start my career, wanting to make a mark, wanting to be well known, and those were ego-driven goals. If you're driven by the goals of the ego, you're on the move, you're working, and you're not really committing yourself to other people and to relationships. So I do think something has to shock you out of the ego and get you down living within your heart and soul, you're longing for others, and you're longing to do something good. And for me, it was a valley. I think some people get blasted out of their ego by some great love. They fall in love with something, a cause or a person. Something has to happen for you to just live at the center of yourself and not at the surface of yourself.

Dan: Why is commitment the key to creating a meaningful life?

David: I tasted freedom at one point. I was out of a marriage and I was living alone. I had a life of total freedom. I could do what I want. I could move where I wanted. I befriend whom I wanted. And I learned that freedom sucks. Political freedom is great, economic freedom's pretty good, but social freedom sucks, 'cause you're unattached, you're unremembered, you're isolated, and have no real commitments. And the people who are remembered have given themselves away usually to family or to a vocation or to a community or to a philosophy or faith. And those people are planted down and those people have really tight relationships because they serve not just themselves, it's the thing they are in love with.

Dan: What's the best way to overcome loneliness?

David: Make friends. Pay attention to other people. One thing I learned when I was in the valley is you can't pull yourself out on your own. Somebody has to reach down and pull you out and show you a better way of living. I got involved in a community of people, about 40 DC kids aged 17 to 22 and then maybe ten adults more my age, and we would just meet every month and just throw our crap on the table in total vulnerability. Those kids really showed me how to do relationships. What they have is emotional transparency. You know what they're feeling all the time. And they gave that gift to me, a little, and so I was listed out by the generosity of others.

Dan Schawbel

Dan: Why should we choose attachment over personal freedom?

David: Wellbecause if you ask people on their deathbed, what is the most important thing in their life, 99 percent of them will say their family or friends. They always talk about relationships. And if there's one thing we know about joy, it's what emerges out of relationships.

I make this distinction in the book between happiness and joy. Happiness is when you win a victory, get promoted or your team wins the Super Bowl. Joy happens when you transcend the self, you forget the self. You're out in nature, and you sort of feel merged with beauty of nature or you're in love with somebody and you feel merged with them or you're serving a civil rights cause and you feel merged with your fellow protesters in pursuit of something just. Happiness is good, but joy is better and if we aim toward joy our life will go well.

Dan: What's your best piece of career advice?

David: I was given a good piece of advice early on. When you just get out of college, just say "yes" to everything because you never really know what you like and you have to try things on.

The second piece of career advice is early in your career do something completely crazy because your horizon risk will be a lot wider than it would be than if you do something conventional, where your horizon of risk will stay small.

Third bit of advice is to pay attention to identity capital. If you can do something interesting than forever after in every job interview, in every dinner conversation, people will ask you "what was it like to be a yak herder in Mongolia" and you'll have peace of identity capital.

The final thing I'd say is to get to yourself quickly. A lot of people have some far goal, but think "I should go get a graduate degree before I do that job" or "I should prepare this way before I do that." If you know sort of what you want to do, just start doing it, and the practice of it is more valuable than anything else.

One of the world's most famous historians has a crucial piece of advice on interviewing: 'Shut up!'

Working: Researching, Interviewing, Writing (Robert Caro)

  • Historian and journalist Robert A. Caro is most well-known for his seminal work "The Power Broker," and more recently for his series of books on former President Lyndon B. Johnson.
  • Caro has won two Pulitzer Prize awards for his work, which is famous for its meticulous research and thoroughness of reporting. He's also known for writing very long books.
  • In 2019, he published an uncharacteristically short book detailing his own process — and one particularly brief chapter contained a brilliant piece of advice that everyone could use.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "The Power Broker" and "The Years of Lyndon Johnson," Robert A. Caro, is known for his meticulously researched, thoroughly reported biographies.

His voluminous works are celebrated, as is his dedication to his craft: Caro and his wife Ina have outright moved their residence multiple times in service of his books, so that they could experience the world as the subjects of his books might have. Collectively, they've spent tens of thousands of hours poring over documents, conducting interviews, and much more — all in the service of thoroughly, accurately portraying the lives of his books' subjects.

Which is why Caro's latest book, "Working: Researching, Interviewing, Writing," is so particularly fascinating.

robert moses

In "Working," for the first time ever, Caro details the fascinating process behind his work.

The book is tremendously useful if you're at all interested in the process of researching and writing non-fiction, but there's one particularly useful piece of advice for anyone: "Interviews: silence is the weapon, silence and people's need to fill it — as long as the person isn't you, the interviewer," Caro writes in a chapter titled "Tricks of the Trade."

Caro likens his own interviewing process to those of fictional interviewers Inspector Maigret and George Smiley, at least in one distinct way: All three "have little devices they use to keep themselves from talking." In the case of Maigret, Caro says, he cleans his pipe. And in the case of Smiley, he cleans his glasses.

Caro does something far more pedestrian: He writes reminders for himself to shut up.

"When I'm waiting for the person I'm interviewing to break a silence by giving me a piece of information I want, I write 'SU' (for Shut Up!) in my notebook," Caro says. "If anyone were to ever look through my notebooks, he would find a lot of 'SUs' there."

Whether you're interviewing a subject or interviewing a job candidate, the same logic applies: Shut up! How that person responds to silence could speak volumes.

I'm spending $50,000 on travel in 2019 and I have zero regrets so far

credit cards Holly Johnson Bahamas

  • I've budgeted $50,000 for travel in 2019, and I'm not the least bit sorry.
  • My husband and I are free of consumer debt, which helps us afford more travel each year. We even paid our home mortgage off a few years ago.
  • It's a lot easier to live life on your own terms when you are debt-free, with plans to stay that way.
  • That said, we also choose to spend on travel over other things, like living in a bigger home or driving fancier cars.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

In a few weeks, my husband and I taking our two children on a whirlwind trip to England and Scotland.

Over the span of 2.5 weeks, we're going to see most of the major sites in London, spend time in the English Lake District, see a few castles, and wander the Scottish Highlands in a rental car. We do have a few planned activities, mostly in London, but the rest of our trip will be spent zigzagging the countryside and relaxing in various Airbnbs.

The cost of this trip works out to around $5,000, mostly because I paid for our flights to London (and home from Edinburgh) with cash. I did use some travel rewards to pay for day trips and rental condos, but the rest we are funding ourselves.

In total, my husband and I have budgeted over $50,000 in travel this year. That sounds crazy, and maybe it is, but it's pretty par for the course when you own a travel website. My husband and I started our blog, ClubThrifty.com, in 2012, and we have done a ton of traveling — both with the kids and alone — ever since then.

If you think paying $50,000 for travel is unreasonable, that's fine with me. I'm living life on my own terms and have been for a long time, so I don't really care what anyone thinks.

Read more: I spend at least $600 a month on groceries, so I stick with 2 credit cards to get the most cash back

Plus, I think there are real benefits travel affords that you can't acquire in other ways. Here's why I don't regret my travel budget and will probably spend the same — or more — on travel next year.

We're debt-free

The main reason we're able to spend so much money on travel is that it's the core of our business, but it also helps immensely that we're debt-free. Our business is 100% free of all debt, and we're debt-free as consumers. My husband and I don't have any credit card debt, nor do we have any car payments. We even paid off our home a few years ago, and we funded a recent room addition and landscaping projects in cash to maintain our debt-free status.

Read more: 5 credit card mistakes even smart people make, according to a woman with 26 cards and excellent credit

We could spend our extra money on nice cars or fancy digs, but we would rather stay debt-free and live life on our own terms. That includes traveling how and when we want.

Keep in mind though, we would spend considerably more on travel (or need to travel less) if not for points and miles. We easily score tens of thousands of dollars in free travel each year with our favorite travel credit cards, but we use those rewards to stretch our travel budget further versus trying to get all our travel for free.

Travel is a learning experience

My kids are 8 and 10 years old, and our travel experiences have exposed them to so much history. They've explored ancient ruins in Rome and Greece, seen some of the most famous works of art on the planet, and learned about their own cultural heritage at a deeper level than one can accomplish in school.

My husband is of Norwegian descent, so we recently went to Norway to see the breathtaking fjords and learn how Norwegians lived hundreds of years ago. We visited an old stave church built in 1180, explored old town Bergen with its leaning wooden buildings, and visited a maritime museum, for example — all big parts of their heritage we couldn't explore so deeply at home.

During our England and Scotland trip, we're going to visit historical sites that will help them dive deep into English history, including that of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, and Mary, Queen of Scots. We'll visit museums, castles, and sites where some of the most momentous events in history have taken place — and we'll have fun along the way.

Family bonding on vacation is supreme

It can be difficult to spend quality time at home with the kids when everyone has homework and after-school activities and the housework never ends. But when we travel, we strive to put our responsibilities on hold and spend time together.

It's a lot easier to focus on our kids when there's nothing else around us to do — and when we're exploring new cities we've never been to before. That's why most of my favorite memories of my children are from trips we've taken, both to far-flung destinations and places closer to home.

The bottom line

While $50,000 is a lot of money to spend on travel (or anything, really), I don't regret our travel splurges at all. In fact, our travel budget has been carefully crafted after lots of thought and planning.

At the end of the day, I would much rather take my kids on another exciting adventure (or three) over having a new car every few years or buying a bigger house. We all have one life to live, and we've decided we would rather see the world than buy more stuff.

Walmart is competing with Amazon Prime Day with a great deal on the Google Home Max

Google Home Max deal

Amazon Prime Day is lighting up the internet with thousands of sales and deals, making it one of the best times to shop big ticket items at deeply discounted prices.

One of the best Prime Day deals we've found is, in fact, not an Amazon offering at all, but is from Walmart's concurrent sale.

Right now, you can get the Google Home Max for just $249 (originally $399) at Walmart— the lowest price we've ever seen.

In fact, you can also find the same deal pretty much everywhere except Amazon; it's also available for $249 at Target, Best Buy, and Bed Bath & Beyond

Since Amazon uses Prime Day as a means to drive shoppers toward its discounted in-house tech products like the Echo speaker, Kindle e-reader, and Fire Stick, it makes sense that they don't carry competing Google Home devices. To capitalize on the gap in Amazon's offerings, Walmart has partnered with Google to offer deals on its smart devices too, such as the Google Home ($69, originally $129)and Home Mini ($25, originally $49), Nest products like the smart thermostat ($189, originally $249) and smart doorbell ($189, originally $249).

These deals are available now through Tuesday, July 16 at Walmart.

All of the retailers carrying the Google Home Max offer free shipping, but Walmart's will arrive on your doorstep the quickest with their free NextDay option, followed closely behind by Target's free 2-day shipping. Best Buy and Bed Bath and Beyond all offer standard free shipping that takes three to six business days.

I've been using the Google Max as my all-in-one home audio system and smart device for about a year. The sound quality is unmatched — it absolutely blows the Echo out of the water, in my opinion. It reaches ear-splitting volume levels that you should probably never max out for your own health and safety, but it's always fun to know that you could probably host a warehouse rave with it if you so desired.

It's capable of pairing with tons of smart devices including Google's line of Nest products and many smart TVs, so you can ask Google to play your favorite show on Netflix or turn the volume up from across the room. The price tag has always been a bit scary, but Google recently slashed the price to $299 to appease those who couldn't stomach the $399 price tag, and at the sale price of $249, the quality, versatility, and user experience offered by the Google Max make it a no-brainer.

Buy the Google Home Max, $249 (originally $399) from: Walmart | Target | Best Buy | Bed Bath & Beyond

The very best deals from Walmart's competing Prime Day 2019 sale — including Google devices, Apple devices, and 4K smart TVs

Google Home Max

Amazon Prime Day has established itself as one of the biggest online sales events since the dawn of online shopping. This year, Prime Day is on July 15 and 16, and Amazon will be offering deals on everything from electronics to baby supplies. But other retailers are starting to catch on, giving Amazon a run for its money and giving you even more opportunities to compare prices and save.

Not to be outdone, Walmart is running thousands of special deals in an even longer window than Prime Day. Price cuts and rollbacks begin on July 14 (one day before Prime Day) and run through Wednesday, July 17 (one day after Prime Day) with new deals being added daily.

Some standout Walmart deals available right now include:

Keep reading for a full roundup of the best deals Walmart has to offer. We'll be updating this list as new deals roll out.

Tech deals

While Amazon is offering steep deals on its in-house brand of tech devices like the Echos, Kindles, and Fire Sticks, Walmart has struck an exclusive deal with Google to bring you savings on some of the best smart home devices on the market. Google Week by Walmartruns through Tuesday, July 16 and features deals such as the Google Home for $69 (down from $129) and the Google Nest Thermostat for $189 (down from $249).

Gaming deals

Walmart is offering tons of gaming bundles that throw in a free game, controller, or other accessory during its Prime Day competition sale. You can also take home amazing freestanding old-school arcade games like Galaga and Pac-Man for up to $30 off their retail price, not to mention steep discounts on individual games like Fallout 76, which is just $17 (a savings of $43).

Toy deals

Outside of Black Friday, this week is going to be the best way to stock up on affordable toys for the little ones. Walmart has deals on everything from EZ Bake Ovens to Nerf Guns to wooden swing sets. On second thought, forget the little ones and grab a bunch of Nerf guns for the Great Office Battle of 2019. For the Endgame fans, Walmart has Marvel and Avengers products at up to 50% off so you can snag a Black Panther action figure for just $8.44 (originally $12.99) or an Avengers Monopoly set for $19.99 (originally $29.99).

Baby-care deals

Having a baby and caring for all its needs gets expensive quickly, so if you're a new parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend of a new parent, or if you've ever met a baby, jump on these parenting deals to help ease the financial burden.

Walmart's standout deals in Baby Accessories include a Walmart exclusive NUK breast pump for $179.99 (originally $299.99), a Graco infant car seat for $175.99 (originally $219.99), and a Jujube diaper bag for $39.99 (originally $70). They've even got sales on Enfamil powdered formula and baby bottles. Even if you don't personally know a baby who could use them, you might still want to grab some to donate to your local food pantry or hospital.

Home improvement deals

Have you been using the same rusty wrench for as long as you can remember? You probably think the tools you have are good enough to do the job, but using old tools can be unsafe and opening yourself up to risk or injury. Take the opportunity now to save on replacing your worn out tools. Walmart has a 8-piece Irwin plier set for $63.99 (originally 99.99), and you can get tack on a shiny new Viper storage chest to store them in for $92.97 (originally $143.98).

Sports and outdoors deals

The timing couldn't be more perfect for deals on outdoor and sporting gear. It's the height of summer, and there are still tons of beach days, cookouts, and camping weekends left on the calendar. Grab these deals now and make the most of the dog days still to come.

Walmart has deals on Coleman and Ozark canopies and tents. Plus you can snag a discounted Lifetime adjustable basketball hoop for $149.99 (originally $200) to brush up on your hoop skills while you wait impatiently for basketball season to start up again.

I use Amazon's Prime Pantry on a semi-regular basis since it's so convenient — and it's running a great Prime Day deal now

primepantry Prime Day 2019

  • The fifth annual Amazon Prime Day starts on July 15 and goes through July 16, but you can get early access to savings right now.
  • Currently, Amazon's Prime Pantry store is offering new subscribers $10 off their first order of $40 or more with a 30-day free trial Pantry membership when they use the code "PANTRY" at checkout.
  • Additionally, now through July 31, existing Prime Pantry members can get free shipping on all orders with no order minimum.
  • I use Prime Pantry on a semi-regular basis to restock on toiletries, cleaning supplies, snacks, drinks, and more since it saves me a trip to the store without costing me more money for the added convenience.
  • You can only take advantage of the deal if you have a Prime membership. Sign up for a 30-day free trial here.

The fifth annual Prime Day is officially on its way, and along with it comes plenty of early deals from Amazon— including a deal on Prime Pantry.

Prime Pantry exists for people like me who don't always have time to go to a physical store and shop, letting Prime members shop thousands of household essentials, many of which aren't available elsewhere on Amazon (like Cap'n Crunch Crunchberries cereal, which is very essential to my household.) Pantry-exclusive coupons save you even more money on these items.

I use the store on a semi-regular basis to restock on toiletries, cleaning supplies, snacks, drinks from the comfort of my couch. And I like that I can buy single boxes of cereal and bottles of shampoo as I need them for prices I'd find in Target or Walmart — I don't have to commit to an unnecessary six-month supply of anything or pay more for the added convenience of shopping online. I pay a flat $5.99 shipping fee each time I place an order regardless of how much or how little I buy — that's it. There's also an option to subscribe and save on shipping if you intend to use Prime Pantry on a more frequent basis.

Read more: I used AmazonFresh to order groceries to my door next-day — here's how the service works

New subscribers can sign up for a 30-day free trial Prime Pantry membership, which includes unlimited free shipping on all orders of $10 or more. They can also save $10 on their first Prime Pantry order of $40 or more when they enter the code "PANTRY" at checkout. After the trial period is over, Prime members pay $4.99 a month for their Prime Pantry membership, but it's easy to opt out at any time. Non-subscribers pay a flat $5.99 shipping fee per order.

Now through July 31, current Prime Pantry subscribers can get free shipping on all orders with no order minimum. If you don't subscribe to Prime Pantry, you can get free shipping on orders of $25 or more with a regular Prime membership.

So far, I've been impressed with the packaging of my Prime Pantry boxes; I've yet to receive a damaged item or have a problem with a missing one. But it's worth keeping in mind that all Prime Pantry boxes are shipped using ground shipping due to their size and weight, taking 1-4 business days to arrive.

Already subscribed to Amazon's fresh grocery delivery service, Amazon Fresh? Then you may not need to sign up for a Prime Pantry membership since free shipping on all orders of $35 or more is included as a benefit for all Amazon Fresh members. If you plan on frequently making small orders — over $10, but below $35 — then an Amazon Prime Pantry subscription may benefit you.

Read more: AmazonFresh vs. Prime Pantry — here's the difference between Amazon's grocery delivery services

If you're considering subscribing to either Prime Pantry or Amazon Fresh, or both, now is an especially great time to do so, since Amazon has discounted both services in the lead up to Prime Day. You can also find valuable discounts on Amazon's digital services like Kindle Unlimited, Audible, and Amazon Music Unlimited, all of which are offering special promotions for Prime Day 2019.

Sign up for a free 30-day Prime Pantry trial membership and save $10 on your first order.

ChefSteps is offering 30% off its top-rated Joule sous vide on Prime Day 2019

ChefSteps sous vide

If you've heard of sous vide — the process of cooking vacuum-sealed food in a water bath at a precise temperature — and have always wanted to give it a try, Prime Day is your lucky day. July 15 and 16 this year you can pick up one of the best sous vide immersion circulators for 30% off.

The ChefSteps Joule Sous Vide is on sale during Prime Day festivities. The model with a white body and a stainless-steel cap and base is marked down from $199 to $139 (you save $60), and the all-white model is $125, which is down from its usual $179 (you save $54.)

Below, we will look at why you don't want to let this Prime Day 2019 deal pass you by.

Why you need the ChefSteps Joule?

Sous vide cooking has exploded in popularity in recent years. French for "under vacuum," sous vide involves putting your food in an airtight pouch and cooking it at a consistent temperature for long periods of time. One way to keep the water at a consistent temperature is to use a high-quality immersion circulator.

In the world of immersion circulators, there are two big names and dozens of also-rans. The Anova and the Joule are the top dogs. Both are excellent, but we think the ChefSteps Joule is better because of its smaller size and powerful motor.

Thanks to its 1.3-pound weight and 11-inch-tall size, the Joule is easy to store. And, the 1100-watt motor brings the water up to temp faster than the competition.

The Joule is one of my colleague's favorite kitchen tools. Insider Picks' Brandt Ranj was impressed with how it performed in his tests. He especially liked that it allowed him to cook perfect, professional-quality steaks.

The Joule app is constantly being improved and features over 100 cooking guides and a "Visual Doneness" indicator that estimates what your food looks like as it cooks. To operate the circulator, you need a tablet or smartphone with Android 4.4 or later or iOS 8.0 or later, and it works over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

ChefSteps offers a full refund if you are not satisfied with the Joule in the first 90 days. And, it's backed by a one-year limited warranty.

Also, the all-white and white with stainless steel models are functionally the same. The only difference is their appearance.

Why sous vide?

I have used a variety of sous vide immersion circulators over the years. And, my favorite part about it is that a novice home chef can easily make restaurant-quality meals with minimal effort. For instance, prior to the sous vide, I had very little experience cooking barbecue ribs. I'd typically throw the ribs in a slow cooker with some barbecue sauce and call it good. Or, if I had the time and patience, they'd go in the smoker.

The immersion circulator changed that. Now, it takes me five minutes to prepare the ribs for their 24-hour-plus water bath at 150 degrees Fahrenheit. After the sous vide, I slather on the barbecue sauce and grill the ribs or put them under the broiler. Guests always comment that they are the best ribs they've ever had.

I've also made ultra-tender steak, beautifully seasoned salmon, delicious vegetables, super-simple dulce de leche, and even the Starbucks egg bites.

Amazon Prime Day 2019 makes it extra affordable to sous-vide cook with one of the best immersion circulators. We strongly recommend giving the ChefSteps Joule Sous Vide a try.

The LifeStraw personal water filter is an Amazon Prime Day deal for $10 — here's why everyone should have at least one

lifestraw

  • LifeStraw is an award-winning bacteria and pathogen filter that tucks neatly into your backpack and remains sealed until you really need it.
  • We've used it in some pretty murky, muck-ridden conditions to make once-non-potable water drinkable.
  • For the duration of Amazon Prime Day 2019, or until supplies last, you can get the LifeStraw personal water filter for $9.89, which is 43% off.

The LifeStraw is a personal (and portable) water filtration tube that has been serving some of the remotest and most disenfranchised communities around the world. It was in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake, Rwanda in 2015, and can be commonly found in the rucksacks of many a member of the United States military. It's also just a useful device to have on camping and hiking trips.

While it's not a purifier (which would also filter out any waterborne viruses), it's about as simple and reliable as it gets in terms of a water filtration system. There are even multiple reviews of the Lifestraw on Amazon by Marines and other members of the armed services stating that they not only personally use it, but that it is now Standard Operation Procedure to equip everyone's rucksack with one when they deploy.

It requires a bit of work to get started and keep water flowing, but it will do its job, especially in the event of an emergency.

The LifeStraw has also received several awards, including those from Saatchi & Saatchi (2008) and TIME (2005), and was even featured in the Museum of Modern Art. Last year, it was one of Amazon's most popular Prime Day deals.

So, whether you're a camper, an all-out adventurer, a doomsday prepper, or simply someone who might, someday, encounter an emergency (which is to say all of us), LifeStraw is worth having in your home, rucksack, bug-out bag, car, or all of the above. The price is certainly right at least for now.
