How to transfer all of your apps onto a new iPhone, using iCloud or the App Store

  • Apple makes it easy to transfer your old apps and data to a new iPhone using an iCloud backup.
  • If you prefer, you can transfer apps to a new iPhone one at a time from the App Store.
  • The easiest way to transfer apps to a new phone is to ensure you have a recent iCloud backup on your old iPhone.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Moving your data to a new iPhone has become a fairly seamless process, thanks in large part to Apple's iCloud backup and restore process.

iCloud lets you perfectly duplicate your existing iPhone— apps and data included — on a new phone when you upgrade.

And if for any reason you don't want to use iCloud to restore your new iPhone via iCloud, you can transfer apps one at a time using the App Store.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone Xs (From $999 at Apple)

How to transfer apps to a new iPhone using iCloud

To transfer your apps and data using iCloud, you need to have a recent backup of your old iPhone. You probably already have your phone configured to perform automatic, daily backups to iCloud. To make sure you have a current backup, see how to back up your iPhone with iCloud in the article "How to backup an iPhone to iCloud, to a computer through iTunes, or to an external hard drive."

Once you know that you have a backup of the old phone, you can restore it during your new iPhone's initial setup.

1. Turn on your new iPhone and follow the setup instructions.

2. On the Apps & Data screen, tap "Restore from iCloud Backup."

transfer 1

3. When your iPhone asks you to sign into iCloud, use the same Apple ID that you used on your previous iPhone.

4. Tap "Next," and choose the most recent backup to install.

After a few moments, your phone will be restored with all the apps from your previous iPhone.

If you've already set up your iPhone without restoring your old apps, you can still restore the apps from a backup, but it will erase any apps and data you have since installed on the new phone.

To do that, follow the instructions for how to factory reset and restore your iPhone in the article "How to restore your iPhone from a backup after taking the 'nuclear option' of a factory reset."

How to transfer apps to a new iPhone using the App Store

If you want to selectively restore apps to a new phone without transferring every app you had on the old phone, you can do that using the App Store.

That's because Apple keeps a record of every app you've ever purchased or downloaded for free, and you can re-install those apps at any time on the same phone or any iPhone you later upgrade to.

1. Start the App Store app on the new iPhone.

2. Search or browse to find the app you want to install.

3. Instead of "Get" or a price, you should see a cloud icon to indicate you already have installed that app in the past. Tap the cloud to install the app. You won't need to authorize the download with Touch ID, Face ID, or a password, since you already own it.

transfer 2

4. Repeat that process for any other apps you want to install.

YouTube says it will update its harassment policies to curb 'creator-on-creator' harassment, but won't say how

neal mohan youtube

  • YouTube executive Neal Mohan said Thursday at VidCon that the video platform will update its policies "later this year" regarding "creator-on-creator harassment."
  • YouTube says Mohan's comments about policy updates were referring to YouTube's announcement in April that the platform takes creators experiencing harassment "very seriously."
  • The reference to "creator-on-creator" harassment follows events in June where a Vox journalist spoke out about a right-wing YouTuber referring to him using homophobic and racist language.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

YouTube is working on changes to its policies regarding "creat0r-on-creator harassment" that will come "later this year," company executive Neal Mohan said Thursday at VidCon.

Mohan said updates to abuse policies would be coming in a speech at VidCon, a gathering of thousands of online video creators and professionals taking place in Anaheim, California. Mohan didn't provide any further details on what those updates would entail.

"Later this year, we will be updating our approach to harassment, particularly creator-on-creator harassment," Mohan said during his keynote speech. "This work is just as important to the YouTube community as any product launch."

Read more: YouTube has lately struggled to protect its vulnerable creators. Analysts say the platform may lack a business incentive to do anything about it.

A YouTube spokesperson told Business Insider that Mohan was referring to YouTube CEO's Susan Wojcicki letter to creators in April, where she said the platform "will do more to discourage" harassment there. The spokesperson also referred Business Insider to an announcement in June, where YouTube said it would be "taking a hard look" at its policies and "aim to update them."

Creator-on-creator harassment on YouTube has gotten significantly more attention in the past couple months after a Vox journalist named Carlos Maza spoke out about right-wing YouTube personality Steven Crowder harassing him in online videos using homophobic and racist remarks. YouTube decided that Crowder's videos didn't violate its harassment policies and kept his videos online, a decision that prompted backlash from both employees inside YouTube and those in the community.

A YouTube spokesperson told CNET that the coming updates to creator-on-creator harassment policies are not in reaction to the Maza-Crowder incident.

"Not everyone will agree with the calls we make," YouTube said in a June blog post. "If we were to take all potentially offensive content down, we'd be losing valuable speech."

In Thursday's keynote speech at VidCon, Mohan also introduced a flurry of new ways for creators to make revenue on the platform. This includes new features on live streams and multi-level channel memberships that fans can purchase, and a fleshed-out opportunity for creators to sell their merchandise on YouTube.

This year, Prime Day will be live for 48 hours, starting at 12 a.m. PT on July 15 and ending at 11:59 p.m. PT on July 16. Because the yearly sales event is hosted by Amazon, it tends to favor Amazon devices and services, and that includes everything Kindle.

Target is giving employees a special discount for surviving a massive technology outage last month that crashed registers at stores nationwide.

The retailer is rewarding employees with 10% off all Target-owned brands on Saturday, Target said. The deal will be added to Target's regular 10% employee discount.

"We are proud of how store team members served our guests to make the best of the situation and therefore we are recognizing them," a Target spokeswoman told Business Insider.

The outage prevented registers at Target's 1,850 US stores from completing purchases for hours on a busy Saturday in June. This led to long lines, frustrated customers, exasperated workers, and many abandoned shopping carts.

Customers posted chaotic photos of crowded checkout lanes to social media and referred to the incident as an "Armageddon" and an "apocalypse," Business Insider's Kate Taylor reported.  Some dubbed it "The Great Target Outage of 2019."

Target employees at some stores handed out samples to customers while they waited for connectivity to be restored.

Then the following day, which was Father's Day, some Target stores were unable to accept anything but cash for 90 minutes.

In a memo to employees following the outages, Target said it was rewarding workers with the discount to offer a "special thank you."

"When I sent the note last Sunday to thank you for your resilience and guest focus in the face of the unexpected tech outage, I certainly wasn't anticipating we'd get hit with another — totally unconnected issue — that would pose another tough set of challenges later that day," the memo reads. "While Sunday's challenges were not at the same scale, it added to your recovery efforts and added potential friction for our guests. But once again, this incredible team made the best out of a challenging situation."

This $24 facial cleanser has a huge cult following — I've been using it for 2 years and I get why so many people love it

purity by philosophy face wash cleanser

  • Philosophy is a skincare brand with a massive cult following.
  • The company's Purity Made Simple facial cleanser is one of its most popular products and I've been using it consistently for years.
  • The gentle cleanser works for all skin types, never dries out skin, and can be used daily.
  • Travel bottles start at $11, and the standard eight-ounce size is $24. The largest is 32 ounces for $55, so bigger the bottle you get, the more you'll save.
  • During Nordstrom's Anniversary sale, you can get the Philosophy Purity trio set, which includes a 32-ounce and eight-ounce bottle of the cleanser and a two-ounce bottle of face wash, for $55.

There are few companies with cult followings quite as intense or as far reaching as Philosophy. I have a theory on why, and yes, while it has mostly to do with how well its products work, it also has to do with the brand ethos and its packaging.

On each bottle of Philosophy's products, you'll find a paragraph of text with some small reflection on it — a short meditation on the literal philosophy behind whatever your using, and how it ties in to the greater rituals and traditions of our shared humanity. Philosphy's products force you to pause, appreciate what's before you, and take a second to care for your body in some way.

This is, most likely, what draws people to it — but what keeps people coming back is how well the products work.

One of the brand's most popular lines, Purity Made Simple, features a collection of gentle moisturizers, wipes, and a cleanser that are barely scented, a departure from the rest of the brand's lines that are largely similar save for the fragrances. The Purity cleanser specifically is one of Philosophy's hero products (it has over 150,000 "hearts" on Sephora with over 11,000 reviews and 4.5 stars), and one of my personal favorites.

Selecting a face wash will almost always come down to your skin type, but what makes Purity special is that it's formulated to work for everyone.

For me, that means it's the ideal year-round cleanser that works as well for my dry winter skin as it does for my slightly dewier summer skin. The formula is never drying, nor is it so hydrating it leaves a film of what feels like lotion on my skin after using it. It's just an all-around great cleanser that can remove grime, leave your skin feeling soft and even, all without irritating even the most sensitive skin.

Purity made simple cleanser

It's formulated without phthalates, but it does contain parabens, in case that's a setback for you. I know I should probably be more attuned to the ingredients in my skincare products, but I generally just want what's going to work best for my skin — and that's why I've been loyal to the Purity cleanser for so long. It helps with my redness, gently cleans out my pores, and removes even my most stubborn makeup when paired with the FOREO facial cleansing brush

As part of the Purity Made Simple line, you'll also find supplemental products like eye gel, a pore mask, lightweight moisturizer, cleansing cloths, and makeup remover. Though I've never tested them personally, I can confidently assume they're all wonderful, considering that I've never met a product from Philosophy that I didn't love (the Amazing Grace shampoo, bath, and shower gel hybrid is one of my other favorites).

As a long-time fan who's been using Purity cleanser pretty consistently for the past few years, I highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a great face wash. It's simplicity is exactly what makes it so special, and though it's a little more expensive than what you may be used to from the drugstore, I wouldn't hesitate for a second to say it's worth the price.

What Not To Buy 4x3

  • While Amazon is slowly releasing early deals for Prime Day 2019 (July 15-16), you won't be able to shop the bulk of deals until the actual day arrives.
  • We can already guess what's going to be on sale, though. If any of the following 32 products — which include Echo speakers, kitchen appliances, and DNA tests — are on your summer shopping list, we recommend waiting until Prime Day to buy them.
  • Save time on Amazon Prime Day 2019 and check out our master list of the best deals to shop. We'll be updating it frequently.

It usually pays to be patient. And if you're patient enough to wait until Prime Day (July 15-16) you will certainly be rewarded when you shop for popular products like smart home speakers and small kitchen appliances

In the lead-up to Prime Day, we recommend not biting the bullet just yet on certain items that may go on sale.

We've been covering Prime Day since it first premiered in 2015, and we've noticed patterns over the years of what products get discounted. Often, it's the exact same model, or simply the newest version of the product, that goes on sale every Prime Day.

Amazon has also teased specific deals in a press release preview. We've indicated those deals, which aren't live yet, below.

The more predictable deals usually come from bigger brands such as Amazon (obviously), Dyson, KitchenAid, and Bose. But deals from newer brands like ChefSteps and Instant Pot have also become easy to spot.

In addition to the specific products below that we recommend waiting to buy, there are some general categories you should pay attention to while shopping Prime Day. If you're an Alexa enthusiast or you're curious about how it can help your everyday life, Amazon teased in its press release that July 15 and 16 will feature the biggest Prime Day deals ever on Alexa-enabled devices.

Here are the products you shouldn't buy until Prime Day 2019, which is when the deals kick off on July 15.

DNA tests:

Echo devices:

Fire devices:

Headphones:

What is Amazon Prime Day 4x3

Big retail sales are no longer limited to a thinly veiled partnership with major US holidays. In fact, many retailers have created their own "holidays;" Nordstrom has its popular Anniversary Sale. Nike has Air Max Day. And of course, the online behemoth Amazon has Prime Day

What is Amazon Prime Day?

Introduced in 2015 in part to celebrate Amazon's 20th anniversary, the first Amazon Prime Day was a one-day-only retail holiday that sought to overtake Black Friday as the sales event of the year. This year, Prime Day will be a 48-hour sale event held on July 15-16. It'll feature major deals on Amazon devices, as well as over 1 million other deals sitewide — with all prices exclusive to Prime members

The inaugural Amazon Prime Day received some criticism from shoppers who weren't happy with the quality and quantity of deals offered, but Amazon has stepped up its game in both realms since, and to great success. Last year's Prime Day was the biggest shopping day in company history until it was surpassed by Cyber Monday shortly after, a familiar pattern of record-breaking that it has experienced in years prior.

<a target="_merchant" href="https://www.amazon.com/?&_encoding=UTF8&tag=biip_071619_amazon-day-prime-20&linkCode=ur2&linkId=5d68157766558607e9b6d7cdeda63672&camp=1789&creative=9325" data-analytics-product="" data-analytics-product-module="Product Prime Day" data-analytics-product-area="insider-pick-primeday-button" data-analytics-product-price="1" class="insider-pick-button insider-pick-button--large">Shop Prime Day Deals</a>

The fact that Amazon's seemingly unshakable site crashed mere minutes after launching Prime Day last year suggests similarly record-breaking numbers this year (though fingers crossed shoppers won't be met with the same error pages of apologetic puppies). The traffic is bolstered by prices that are their lowest ever, besting even Black Friday on popular items like tech, beauty, home and kitchen, and virtually every other category under the sun.

Prime Day has also been made available in more countries outside the US every year. Two years ago, it was extended to Canada, the UK, Spain, Mexico, Japan, Italy, India, Germany, France, China, Belgium, and Austria, and last year to Australia, Singapore, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg. This year, it's available to shoppers in the United Arab Emirates. The number of Prime subscribers surpassed 100 million people across the globe last year.

If you plan on shopping on Amazon Prime Day 2019 this year, we'll be compiling the best deals here.

When is Prime Day? What deals do we expect to see?

Prime Day this year will be a 48-hour event, starting at midnight PT on Monday, July 15 and ending at 11:59 p.m. PT on Tuesday, July 16

Amazon Prime Day as we know it is a global shopping event where Prime members can shop hundreds of thousands of deals sitewide, with new deals starting as often as every five minutes. This year will feature more than 1 million deals worldwide.

Some of the best Prime Day deals have already begun. You can save $100 on the Fire TV Recast (usually $229.99), try four months of Amazon Music Unlimited for only $0.99 (save $31), and try three months of Kindle Unlimited for free (save $30).

<a target="_merchant" href="https://www.amazon.com/b/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&node=8521791011&&linkCode=ll2&tag=biip_071619_amazon-day-prime-20&linkId=9845395068ca6a35806018d46c0716c2&language=en_US" data-analytics-product="" data-analytics-product-module="Product Prime Day" data-analytics-product-area="insider-pick-primeday-button" data-analytics-product-price="1" class="insider-pick-button insider-pick-button--large">Shop Fire TV Devices on Amazon</a>

Last year, Amazon Prime Day began at 3 p.m. ET on Monday, July 16, and ran for 36 hours through Tuesday, July 17. It featured thousands of dollars of discounts on a range of products, from cult-favorites like the Instant Pot DUO60 ($40+ off) and Roomba robot vacuum ($120 off) to innovative products from small businesses.

In the US, best sellers were the Instant Pot, 23andMe DNA Test, and somewhat surprisingly, LifeStraw personal water filters. Business Insider readers in particular took advantage of $1 to $5 Kindle Unlimited, Audible, and Amazon Music Unlimited memberships; noise-cancelling headphones from Sony, Bose, and Sennheiser; and a variety of Amazon devices.

It's not surprising our readers loved Amazon devices. Historically, Amazon Prime Day is the best time of the year to buy one.

In the past, the company has offered double the deals on Amazon devices and the biggest deals yet on Alexa-enabled products like the Echo smart speakers, the Fire TV, and Fire tablets.

<a target="_merchant" href="https://www.amazon.com/Amazon-Echo-And-Alexa-Devices/b/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&node=9818047011&linkCode=ll2&tag=biip_071619_amazon-day-prime-20&linkId=17f33a3ce96d7b0cfdb9eafda6f7ab5e&language=en_US" data-analytics-product="" data-analytics-product-module="Product Prime Day" data-analytics-product-area="insider-pick-primeday-button" data-analytics-product-price="1" class="insider-pick-button insider-pick-button--large">Shop Amazon Echo Devices</a>

All of these Amazon devices will be on sale this Prime Day. They include some of Amazon's newest Alexa-enabled products, introduced last September, like the 2nd generation Echo Plus speaker and the Echo Input speaker accessory. Amazon's official press release promises that members will find the biggest Prime Day deals ever on Alexa-enabled devices

Outside of physical device deals, expect deals on Amazon services and memberships like entertainment (Kindle Unlimited, Amazon Music Unlimited, Prime Video, Audible, etc.) and grocery shopping (Amazon Fresh, Amazon Pantry, Whole Foods, etc.).

It sounds counterintuitive, but Amazon Prime Day is also a great time to shop everywhere except Amazon.

Plenty of other online retailers throw competing sales around Prime Day. If you'd rather hop over to Amazon for tech and Nordstrom for skin-care and beauty steals, you're in luck, because they'll both be courting you come mid-July.

Target, Walmart, eBay, and Macy's are all holding directly competing summer sales to rival the deals of Prime Day.

However, Amazon's perks like fast shipping remain, making Prime Day more often than not the winner in a competition of price and convenience.

Here's how Jeffrey Epstein may have acquired a $77 million Upper East Side townhouse for $0

FILE PHOTO: A man walks past the front door of the upper east side home of Jeffrey Epstein, after the Southern District of New York announced charges of sex trafficking of minors and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of minors, in New York, U.S., July 8, 2019. REUTERS/Carlo Allegri

Jeffrey Epstein was arrested on July 6 on suspicion of sex trafficking minors in his Manhattan and Florida homes from 2002 to 2005. The arrest comes over a decade after Epstein pleaded guilty to solicitation of prostitution and procurement of minors for prostitution and served 13 months in prison.

Epstein's real-estate portfolio has played a major role in the ongoing sex-trafficking and sexual abuse allegations against him.

Read more:A look inside multimillionaire Jeffrey Epstein's real-estate portfolio, where sex trafficking reportedly took place and a $77 million Manhattan mansion may have been acquired for $0

In total, Epstein's real-estate holdings are estimated to be valued at north of $100 million. At the center of the investigation is Epstein's Upper East Side townhouse, which is one of the largest private homes in Manhattan. The FBI raided the seven-story mansion on 9 East 71st Street in July and found nude photos, one of which reportedly included an underaged girl.

Epstein moved into the townhouse in 1996, according to Vanity Fair, but there was no evidence proving he owned the home. The first proof of ownership, however, is dated 2011, at which point the home was transferred to a company owned by Epstein for $0

Business Insider spoke with real-estate lawyer Marc Lavaia, partner at the New York-based law firm Warshaw Burstein LLP, about the logistics behind transferring property for $0.

Epstein has at least six properties around the world

A letter released by Epstein's lawyer on July 11, 2019, makes note of six properties that Epstein maintains, five of which are in America.

Currently, the public is aware of details regarding five of those luxury residential properties: a multimillion-dollar mansion in Manhattan; a private island in the US Virgin Islands; a home in Palm Beach, Florida; a ranch in New Mexico; and an apartment in Paris, France.

While the case against him focuses heavily on his Manhattan mansion and his Palm Beach estate, he has also been accused of abusing victims in his New Mexico, US Virgin Islands, and Paris homes.

Public records show that the $77 million Upper East Side townhouse was transferred to Epstein for $0 in 2011

Epstein's Manhattan mansion has a mysterious, complicated history.

The townhouse was bought in 1989 by founder and CEO of L Brands Les Wexner for $13.2 million. Wexner then sold it in 1998 to the New York-based Nine East 71st Street Corporation (NES) for an undisclosed amount. Public records from 2011 show that Epstein held, to some degree, ownership of NES.Details of his relationship with the company are still unclear.

Public records show that, in 2011, the ownership of the property was transferred from NES to the Virgin Islands-based company Maple Inc., another company also controlled by Epstein. Documents indicate that the property was transferred to Maple for $0.

Epstein NYC home

According to Bloomberg, a court document estimates the home's current value to be $77 million.  The New York City Department of Finance valued the home closer to $56 million earlier this year.

How can a multimillion-dollar property be transferred for $0?

Public documents of the 2011 transfer show that Epstein signed as the president of both NES and Maple Inc. Since he was an owner of both companies, he essentially acted as both the buyer and seller in the transaction, thus resulting in a $0 transfer.

Lavaia told Business Insider that it's not uncommon for high-end real-estate transfers of this nature to take place. Transferring property is very simple, he said, and oftentimes just requires signing over the deed.

A holder may decide to transfer the ownership of a multimillion-dollar property at no cost for many reasons, but, according to Lavaia, two major reasons are to limit the current company's liability or to receive better tax treatment on a property. NYC epstein Home

What are the potential benefits of being both the buyer and seller of the same property?

In order to limit liability, owners often transfer assets between their companies, Lavaia said.

"If XYZ Company owns a property and is sued for whatever reason, that property could be subject to a judgment," Lavaia told Business Insider in an email. However, "If XYZ Company transfers that property, it has limited its liability as that asset is in theory not subject to judgment."

Transferring a residence between companies of the same owner may also allow for better tax treatment on the property, Lavaia explained. Consider an owner who is looking to sell a property in the near future: Transferring ownership to a company out of state or even overseas can lessen the amount due in taxes during the anticipated transaction.

The reason Epstein decided to transfer ownership in 2011 from NES to Maple Inc. remains unclear. The timing of it, however, does coincide with the year — 2011 — that  Epstein was forced to register as a Level 3 sex offender in New York

The CEO of an international luxury restaurant group says there's a new type of restaurant getting Michelin stars, and it's part of fine dining's evolution

restaurant casual fine dining

Walk into a Michelin-starred restaurant today and you may find rustic tables and diners in sneakers instead of white linen tablecloths and waiters in coattails.

Michelin stars have long been associated with gourmet restaurants — but the brand's reach has expanded, Des Gunewardena, CEO and chairman of UK luxury restaurant group D&D London, told Business Insider: "Michelin has embraced the overall trend through the years of restaurants becoming less formal, more social venues rather than formal, starchy temples of gastronomy."

Gunewardena is behind more than 40 restaurants worldwide, which have been frequented by celebrities and royalty throughout the years, from Elizabeth Taylor and Princess Diana to Naomi Campbell and Sir Elton John.

That portfolio includes Michelin-starred restaurant Angler in London and most recently, queensyard, a restaurant in New York City's new $25 billion Hudson Yards neighborhood— the most expensive real-estate development in US history.

Queensyard_Interiors(Night)_005

"You don't have to have serious waiters and hushed rooms to enjoy great food," Gunewardena said. "Even very informal restaurants in Shoreditch [an artsy area in London akin to New York City's East Village] are packed to the rafters with raucous young customers enjoying fantastic food [and] are now being awarded Michelin stars."

This evolution reflects diners' evolving demands — they're moving away from artifice and seeking quality food served with informality, fun, and authenticity, he previously told Business Insider.

Restaurants are stepping up their game for the informal foodie

Restaurants are catering to this new customer, who's looking to pair good food with a good time.

"Diners today, wherever they live, are looking for good quality, memorable, and authentic experiences when they eat out — and this is generally pushing up the standard of cuisine found across the board," Gwendal Poullennec, the international director of the Michelin Guides, told Business Insider. "With this in mind, the level of cooking found in traditionally more simple establishments (pubs, brasseries, taco restaurants, hawker stalls etc.) is improving to cater for these more discerning foodies."

The Michelin Guide has adapted to this shift and is recognizing these establishments, wherever they are around the world, he added. He cited the 2019 Michelin Guide California as an example, thanks to the state's visible signature "high-quality, yet laid-back dining ambiance."

restaurant los angeles

In fact, Los Angeles is getting a Michelin guide again, nine years after the guide's former director said people in LA aren't "interested in eating well," Business Insider's Katie Warren reported.

Ultimately, the shift is creating a new kind of luxury dining experience in which fine dining is less about the fancy trappings and more about the overall quality.

"Chefs today are becoming more and more innovative in what they create in the kitchen and they want to reflect this creativity and innovation in the total dining experience they offer to their customers," Poullennec said. "This can not only be seen in the way their staff are dressed, the furnishings and tableware, but also in the locations that they choose for their restaurants — which could for example be very simple, industrial spaces."

It's important to note that the Michelin method of assessing restaurants for stars hasn't changed, only focusing on the food on the plate based on five different criteria, according to Poullennec: quality of the produce, cooking skills, harmony of flavors, personality of chef expressed in the cuisine, and consistency over time and across the entire menu.

Here's what it's like behind the scenes at NYC's Carnegie Hall, the 128-year-old concert venue that's hosted Duke Ellington, Tchaikovsky, and the Beatles

DCINY Carnegie Hall

  • Iris Derke, general director and co-founder of the music production company DCINY, took Business Insider behind the scenes of New York City's iconic Carnegie Hall.

  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

From Tchaikovsky to Stravinsky, from Duke Ellington to the Beatles, music icons of all stripes solidified their legend with a performance at New York City's Carnegie Hall.

Since business magnate Andrew Carnegie commissioned the hall's construction in the late 1800s, viewers have seen historical performances from thousands of artists and speakers. What viewers couldn't see, however, was what the hall looked like backstage, where famous people wandered the halls in-between their performance.

Until now.

Business Insider recently shadowed Iris Derke, the co-founder and general director of the production company DCINY, as she went about planning a musical performance at the fabled hall. The process can start years in advance, and takes communication and planning across the country (and sometimes in different continents).

The hall's backstage primarily holds rooms for performers to relax and socialize. There are television sets and schedules around the building to help artists know where they need to be at all times, as well as paintings and photographs depicting iconic performances across the years.

Here's what it's like to go behind the stage at Carnegie Hall.

To get behind the scenes at Carnegie Hall, I shadowed Iris Derke, the co-founder and general director at the concert production company DCINY.

Before founding her music production company, Derke, a flutist, performed with distinguished orchestras like the Turksoy Symphony Orchestra in Istanbul.

Derke switched to performance direction because she enjoyed creating "immersive experiences" using not only music, but dancers, smoke screens, and other visual elements.

As of May 2019, Derke helped bring together 50,000 artists for more than 200 performances during her 12 years as DCINY general director. She manages a 22-person, full-time staff, plus a seasonal production team that comes in for rehearsals.

"Nothing makes me happier than [when] I'm working with our production department or our box office department and I see their passion for really creating something special and there's a way for me to help them find a way towards making it even better," Derke said.

As general director, Derke plans the performance for years leading up to the actual event. She brings together composers, conductors, and other artists to perform with DCINY's team of professional musicians.

The performance Derke took me behind the stage for was June's 'Buena Onda: Music from South America,' featuring music from composers Maria Guinand and Alberto Grau.

On the day of a performance, Derke usually arrives at Carnegie Hall at 8 am to make sure everything is set up for the stage. She sits through the dress rehearsal shortly before the event starts.

Derke said she's mostly on her phone texting different members of the production team the day of the performance.

Derke says producing a Carnegie Hall performance is all about preparation. "You always have to be 2 steps ahead of what could happen."

Derke says Carnegie Hall is her favorite venue to bring artists because of "the history and the ghosts."

"I mean when you walk out on that stage you think back to how many incredible happenings were there? Since 1891, I mean from Tchaikovsky to Bernstein to Judy Garland and Carol Burnett," Derke said. "When you take the stage and you look at the beauty of the red seats and this gorgeous space, it just brings chills to me every time."

The back of Carnegie Hall is maze-like, so it feels difficult navigating between the venue's three auditoriums for the first time. Derke says she jokes with her staff that they have to know where they are going because some doors can close on themselves.

There are televisions recording performances at all three auditoriums (Stern, Zankel, and Weill) in multiple areas inside Carnegie Hall. The televisions help artists watch other performances in their down time, as well as help them keep track of when to appear on stage.

Stern Auditorium holds most of the performances, while the smaller Weill stage is primarily for solo and debut artists. Zankel Hall, meanwhile, typically sees performances somewhere in the middle.

There are multiple rooms for performers to relax in between, before, and after performances.

In their downtime, performers change clothes, tune their instruments, eat food, and socialize with each other.

Many of the performers at DCINY are close friends, having studied together at the Manhattan School of Music, as well as other schools.

Derke says she loves bringing talented artists to Carnegie Hall, since in her opinion it's one of the best venue for performances. One of the artists told Derke he has 3 photos on his mantel: his wedding, the birth of his child, and getting to perform at Carnegie Hall. "That's the reason I love my job so much: we get to make music in places like this," she said.

Carnegie Hall has paintings and photos all around these rest areas depicting famous performances of the past. The Rose Museum inside the hall has a whole room dedicated to preserving the concert venue's rich history. The museum is one of Derke's favorite places in Carnegie Hall.

Carnegie Hall posts copies of the event schedule everywhere backstage, including in the elevators, so performers can keep track of when and where they are supposed to be at all times.

Derke keeps track of everything having to do with her performances in a master folder, which she builds months in advance.

When it's time for the event to start, Derke views the performance in a box directly across from the stage, alongside her mom, daughter, and close friends.

"I think my most favorite part of the weekend is as dress rehearsal starts and I'll usually position myself on the stage just to watch all the artists go out on the stage for the very first time," Derke says.

"You'll see people cry, you'll see people laugh," Derke added. "There's just something magical about it."

Royal Caribbean Cruises has better food than any other company that operates large cruise ships, according to the cruise website CruiseCritic.

Read more:8 things cruise-ship workers wish they could tell passengers but can't

The website ranks cruise ships in a number of categories based on reviews from its users. (A CruiseCritic representative said thousands of reviews were used in the website's 2019 "cruiser's choice" awards, but declined to give a specific number.) For the "best dining" category, Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises — which are both owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises — accounted for nine of the ships in the top 10, with Celebrity docking six ships on the list, and Royal Caribbean taking three spots.
