What could be more terrifying than talking to someone you're attracted to?

Luckily, social science has figured out what makes flirting work — or not.

Business Insider found some of the most intriguing facts on the art of flirtation, so you can saunter over to the object of your affection with confidence.

This is an update of an article originally posted by Drake Baer.

People flirt for six different reasons.

In a 2004 review of the literature on flirting, Northern Illinois University professor David Dryden Henningsen identified six different motivations for the behavior:

• Sex: trying to get in bed
• Fun: treating it like a sport
• Exploring: trying to see what it would be like to be in a relationship
• Relational: trying to increase the intimacy of a relationship
• Esteem: increasing one's own self esteem
• Instrumental: trying to get something from the other person

In that study, Henningsen asked 101 female and 99 male students to write out a hypothetical flirty conversation between a man and a woman, then identify the motivations for the things they said.

The behaviors broke down along gender norms: Men were significantly more likely to have a sexual motivation, while women tended to have a relational one.

Couples need to flirt, too.

Like Tinder, cats, and dying alone, flirting is usually associated with single people.

But couples need to know how to flirt, too.

After studying 164 married people for a 2012 study, University of Kentucky researcher Brandi Frisby noted that most of them flirted — by playing "footsies" or whispering in their partner's ear, for example — as a means of maintaining and emphasizing intimacy. Oftentimes, she wrote in her paper, married couples flirted to "create a private world with the spouse."

People feel connected when they get past the small talk.

You probably already know that asking questions of the person you fancy is a good idea.

But it's all about the kind of questions you ask.

According to a widely cited 1997 study by State University of New York psychologist Arthur Aron, people feel more closely bonded when they ask each other intimate questions, as in "What roles do love and affection play in your life?" and "What, if anything, is too serious to be joked about?"

Six months later, two of the participants (a tiny fraction of the original study group) even found themselves in love — an intriguing result, though not a significant one.

Men overestimate how interested women are.

Evidence from multiplestudies supports the idea that, among heterosexual people, men tend to over perceive sexual interest from women, while women tend to under perceive sexual interest from men.

A 2014 study published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology surveyed hundreds of undergraduate students from Norway, which according to the UN is one of the world's most "gender egalitarian nations."

Researchers found more women had been subject to instances where men overperceive sexual interest from them than men. Young, single, and sexuality-fluid participants also experienced being over-sexualized more often.

The most attractive characteristics depend on gender.

According to a 2011 study led by University of British Columbia psychologist Jessica Tracy, heterosexual men and women diverge greatly in the facial expressions they fancy.

After showing 1,041 people images of different facial expressions, Tracy found that:

• Happiness was the most attractive female expression, but one of the least attractive for men.
• Pride was the most attractive male expression, but one of the least attractive for women.
• Interestingly, an expression of shame was relatively attractive on both men and women.

Flirting can enhance your attraction.

University of New Mexico evolutionary psychologist Steven W. Gangestad told Psychology Today in 2016 that flirting is a "negotiation process" that happens after the first moments of attraction.

It's a subtle sort of testing the waters. You don't just say "I'm attracted to you; are you attracted to me?"

"It works much better to reveal [your attraction] and have it revealed to you in smaller doses," Gangestad says. "The flirting then becomes something that enhances the attraction."

It's not about being the most attractive person in the room.

It's about signaling that you're available.

According to research from Webster University psychologist Monica Moore (who studied people's flirting behavior at singles bars, shopping malls, and other places where young people meet), women who smiled and made eye contact with others were more likely to be approached than those who were simply good looking.

There may be five main styles of flirting.

When it comes to flirting, everyone's got a different M.O.

In 2010, Jeffrey A. Hall and Chong Xing published research that suggests there are five different styles of flirting. In 2015, they followed up on this research by breaking down each style into a series of verbal and nonverbal behaviors.

Here are some key behaviors of each type, as described by Susan Krauss Whitbourne on Psychology Today:

• Physical flirts tend to subtly touch the person they're interested in.
• Traditional flirts believe men should make the first move.
• Sincere flirts get other people to open up to them.
• Playful flirts see the interaction as a game and may be using the flirtation as a means to another end.

You can take a quiz, developed by Hall to figure out which style best describes you.

The best flirters shift their strategy depending on context.

If you're flirting with someone perceived as higher status than you, being more subtle will lead to more success, according to research.

A 2014 study conducted by University of Pennsylvania professors found flirters who can adjust how overtly they flirt will have the best success. "Presence of rivals, the potential for an advance to be considered inappropriate, or the higher social status of the receiver" are all situations where you're better off being more subtle.

If successful, flirting can lead others to think you are also funny or creative, as well as attractive.

If you're flirting on an app, there are some words that work better than others.

Compliments over text go a long way, dating website Plenty of Fish finds.

The website analyzed 60,000 messages on dating apps to find the words that got the best responses. For men, calling a woman "beautiful" led to a conversation 20% of the time. Women messaging men first receive responses less often, but using the word "nice" works best.

Flirting could be all about biology.

Flirting may have less to do with words or body language, and more to do with biology.

Scientists have long speculated on how pheromones, or chemicals released by your body that have an impact on people around you, contribute to physical attraction. A 2011 study out of Florida State University found men who were exposed to pheromones released by ovulating women were more likely to drink alcohol and flirt with women.

'Why is my iPhone so quiet?': 4 ways to make your iPhone louder, from changing its settings to sticking it in a bowl

iphone in bowl

  • Knowing a few ways to make an iPhone louder ensures that you'll never struggle to hear your music at an adequate volume.
  • If your iPhone's speaker isn't loud enough, switching to a different EQ setting and disabling its volume limiter can make your iPhone louder.
  • You can also try positioning it differently (in a bowl, for instance), or connecting your phone to a Bluetooth speaker.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Most iPhone models are capable of fairly loud volume — perhaps not enough to enjoy music through the speakers on a noisy subway, but certainly good enough for most everyday situations.

But if you find your iPhone isn't loud enough to suit you, here are a few ways you can try to make your iPhone's speaker louder.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

iPhone XS (From $729 at Apple)

Amazon Echo Dot (For $24.99 at Amazon)

Anker SoundCore 2 (For $39.99 at Amazon)

Bose Soundlink Mini II (For $149.99 at Amazon)

SEE ALSO: The best Bluetooth speakers you can buy

Change your iPhone's EQ settings

The EQ setting called "Late Night" normalizes your iPhone's Music app's sound by making quieter sounds closer in volume to the loudest sections. The overall effect is that all your audio sounds louder.

1. Start the Settings app.

2. Tap "Music" and then tap "EQ."

3. On the EQ page, tap "Late Night."

Turn off the iPhone's volume limiter

It's possible that your phone's volume limiter might be turned on. This is a safety feature designed to ensure you don't damage your hearing by playing the iPhone too loudly. But if it's enabled and your phone just isn't loud enough, try turning it off.

1. Start the Settings app.

2. Tap "Music."

3. Find "Volume Limit" and make sure it is set to Off. If it's on, tap "Volume Limit" and slide the volume control all the way to the right. Tap "Music" at the top left of the page and make sure it is now turned off.

Position the iPhone to make it sound louder

Not all solutions are high tech — some are common sense. Here are a couple of things that'll make your iPhone louder:

  • Position it upside down. The speaker is on the bottom, so if you tend to prop it up against a computer or phone stand so you can read the screen while you work, the speaker is firing down into the table. Turn it upside down, and the speaker will fire up, sounding slightly louder.
  • Put it in a bowl. If you rest your iPhone in a bowl, the curved base of the bowl will cause sound waves to bounce up, creating a better soundstage.

Connect your iPhone to a speaker

Still not loud enough? Consider connecting your iPhone to a Bluetooth speaker. There are a wealth of speakers available that can increase the sound quality of your iPhone substantially, and make it louder at the same time.

The Amazon Echo Dot costs less than $50 and includes the Amazon Alexa AI personal assistant, which gives you a wealth of additional features in addition to just playing music (but the lack of a battery means you can only use it at home).

Alternately, Anker makes a number of affordable, portable Bluetooth speakers. The Anker SoundCore 2 costs $40 and has the added advantage of being waterproof and including a 24-hour battery.

And if you want to double down on audio quality, a speaker like the Bose soundlink Mini II offers enhanced audio performance and a 10-hour battery for $150.

The singer would often spend nights sleeping in the London Underground train stations or on top of heating vents outside Buckingham Palace.

Leonardo DiCaprio comes from a drug-torn town outside of Los Angeles

Before Leonardo DiCaprio was one of the biggest names in Hollywood, with box-office smashes like Titanic, The Revenant, and The Wolf of Wall Street under his belt, he was a poor kid growing up on the outskirts of LA. The actor claims he saw great poverty, drug use, and violence at a young age, which now allows him to portray the darker side of humanity in his films.

Following slight backlash for his role in The Wolf of Wall Street, which critics said glamorized drug use, prostitution, and other "amoral" acts, DiCaprio defended the role by comparing it with his own childhood. In an interview with The Times, he said, "Who am I to talk about this? It goes back to that neighborhood. It came from the fact that I grew up very poor, and I got to see the other side of the spectrum."

DiCaprio's estimated net worth is upwards of $245 million.

In his high school yearbook, Ralph Lauren answered a question about his future goals with one word: "millionaire." Today, the fashion giant is worth $7 billion.

Ralph Lauren always dreamed of being rich and successful. In his 1957 DeWitt Clinton High School yearbook, Ralph Lauren reportedly wrote "millionaire" as one of his greatest life goals — little did he know that he would come to surpass that figure tenfold. The youngest son of Jewish immigrants living in the Bronx, Lauren escaped his own reality by entering into a new one. Young Ralph Lipschitz (he would later change his surname to Lauren) loved movies, and some say that Old Hollywood stars continue to inspire his designs.

"He would literally fall into the fantasies of the movies of that era," Michael Gross, author of "Genuine Authentic: The Real Life of Ralph Lauren," told Bloomberg. "He truly did project himself into the scenes in which men like Gary Cooper and Cary Grant were playing. He sees the characters that populate his dreams and visions, and that vision — that ability to step into a fantasy world — Ralph brought to the fashion business."

Ralph Lauren now has a net worth of roughly $7 billion.

Steve Jobs was the child of two immigrants and became a millionaire by age 23

Though Steve Jobs is now exalted as one of the greatest minds in modern history, he came from humble beginnings. Jobs' young, working-class parents struggled to support him and make ends meet. He was soon taken in by another couple, Paul and Clara Jobs. Jobs was fascinated by computers, even at a young age. However, Jobs never liked formal education.

After dropping out of college after his first semester, he started working at video game manufacturing company Atari. A while later, Jobs created the first-ever Apple machine together with Steve Wozniak. Jobs chased after people to invest in their new venture. Eventually, Intel agreed to fund them.

By age 23, Jobs was worth $1 million. He was the youngest person on Forbes' list of the country's richest people at the time — no small feat without inheriting any family wealth. He made $10 million by age 24 and crossed the $100 million mark by the time he was 25.

Before he passed away at the age of 56 in 2011, he was worth $10 billion.

Meet Tulsi Gabbard: Hawaiian congresswoman, army veteran, surfer, martial artist, and 2020 democratic candidate

Tulsi Gabbard

  • Hawaiian congresswoman and Democratic presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard's life story isn't an easy one to emulate.
  • The 38-year-old, who grew up surfing and practicing martial arts, served in the army twice, was the youngest-ever member of the Hawaiian state legislature, met and refused to condemn Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad, and is not afraid to take a swing at much more established politicians.
  • She doesn't always follow the party line, she's anti war intervention and, as a young woman, she was anti-gay marriage.
  • Here's a closer look at her life and career to date, in photos.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

On January 11, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii announced she was running to be president of the United States.

At 38, the Democratic presidential candidate might be young but she's led a full life. She's an Iraq War veteran, a surfer, a congresswoman.

One of five siblings, she was born in American Samoa, before her family moved to Hawaii when she was two. Although she grew up an introvert, she has gone on to conquer her shyness and had a successful career in politics.

She's not afraid to look unpopular — she's defended Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad. In the 2016 presidential race she backed Bernie Sanders over Hilary Clinton. She's called out both President Donald Trump and former president Barack Obama over things they've said, or failed to say.

But being an outspoken politician, especially at a young age, has had its drawbacks, too. Comments she made about LGBTQ communities and a job she held in the early 2000s have reemerged and she's apologized for them.

Here's the life, so far, of one of the Democratic party's most interesting candidates.

Gabbard doesn't always follow the party line. She goes on Fox News. After Trump launched a missile strike against airfields in Syria in response to a chemical weapons attack that killed at least 80 civilians in April 2017, Gabbard called the strike "short-sighted," and said it would lead to "more dead civilians, more refugees ... and a possible nuclear war between the United States and Russia."

Tulsi's campaign centers on foreign policy. She's an anti-interventionist and opposes what she calls "regime change wars." If elected, she will keep the US out of them. She supports Sanders' Medicare plan. She would also end federal subsidies for oil companies and invest in renewable energy.

In March 2019, Stephen Colbert pressed Gabbard to say Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was a war criminal. But she wouldn't.

Instead, she said: "There are bad people in the world, but history has shown us that every time the US goes in and topples these dictators we don't like, trying to act as the world's police, we end up increasing the suffering of the people in these countries. We end up causing loss of life, both American lives and the lives of people in these countries."

In the first democratic debate for 2019, Gabbard confused people by responding to a question on equal pay by discussing national security issues. "I enlisted in the Army National Guard after the Al-Qaeda terror attacks on 9/11, so I could go after those who attacked us on that day," she said.

She also had a memorable clash with Tim Ryan over US military presence in Afghanistan, correcting him when he said the Taliban were responsible for 9/11. "The Taliban didn’t attack us on 9/11, al Qaeda did," she said.

After the first debate, Gabbard was the most searched candidate on Google.

And she'll be back. She's locked in a spot for the second round of democratic debates in July.

  • Figuring out how to see your Google location history is easy to do in the Google Maps app.
  • When you use Google Maps for navigation, the app stores all your destinations and the routes you took to get there.
  • You can browse your Google Maps travel history and even see photos you took with your phone at each location.
  • If you prefer not to store this information, you can delete locations from your Google Maps history, or disable location tracking entirely.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

For many of us, Google Maps has become an essential tool for getting around town (even though Google has been known to occasionally steer people the wrong way).

Google Maps keeps a record of everywhere you navigate, and the app makes it easy to see your location history, complete with the exact routes you took to get there. If you have privacy concerns, you can delete your history or disable it entirely.

The procedure for seeing your location history is the same on both the iPhone and Android devices.

How to see your location history in Google Maps

1. Start the Google Maps app on your phone.

2. Tap the three horizontal lines (called a "hamburger menu) at the top left of the screen.

location 1

3. Tap "Your timeline."

You can explore trips you've made, day-by-day. You can swipe the bottom half of the screen to change days, or tap the calendar icon at the top of the screen to choose a specific day. Google Maps even shows you photos you took with your phone's camera at locations on the map.

location 2

How to delete your location history in Google Maps

If you want to delete specific locations from your history, or clear all the data entirely, you can do that.

1. While on the Your timeline page, tap the three dots at the top right of the screen.

2. On the pop-up menu, tap "Settings."

3. You now have three options:

  • To delete a specific set of locations, tap "Delete Location History range" and then, on the Delete range page, choose the start and end dates. Then tap "Delete."
  • To clear your location history in its entirety, tap "Delete all Location History" and confirm your choice on the pop-up screen.
  • To configure Google Maps to automatically clear your location history every few months, tap "Automatically delete Location History." On the next page, choose whether to delete your history every three months or every 18 months, and then tap "Next."

location 3

How to disable location tracking in Google Maps

If you never want Google Maps to store your location history at all, you can turn this feature off entirely.

1. While on the "Your timeline" page, tap the three dots at the top right of the screen.

2. In the pop-up menu, tap "Settings."

3. Tap "Location History is on."

4. On the Location History page, turn off Location History by swiping the button to the left.

We visited the regional chain that Southerners say is better than In-N-Out and Shake Shack — here's the verdict

Cook Out 17

  • Cook Out is the fast-food king of North Carolina.
  • The chain only has locations in 10 states but has developed a cult following in the South.
  • We visited a Richmond, Virginia, location and saw why customers adore Cook Out.

New Yorkers love Shake Shack. The West Coast swears by In-N-Out.

But North Carolinians say that there's one burger chain that trumps them all.

Cook Out is a North Carolina-based fast-food chain serving up burgers, barbecue, and milkshakes, and it's renowned in the South for its low prices and high quality.

But if you don't live in one of the 10 states the chain is in, you might have never heard of this cult restaurant and its fervent following.

So we went to Richmond, Virginia, to sample the much-hyped chain and see how it measured up to the coastal titans of the burger business.

SEE ALSO: We tried two cult chicken chains that are quickly taking over the nation — and the winner was clear

DON'T MISS: Southerners swear by this regional chicken chain's breakfast menu — we went to see if it lives up to the hype

While Cook Out is known for its classic drive-thru locations with outdoor seating, the chain has recently been opening more sit-down restaurants.

As we walked into the rustic restaurant, gentle strains of Christian rock piped over the speakers — the kind of songs where you can't quite tell whether the lyrics are describing a romantic love or a more spiritual suitor.

The menu is wide-ranging, and the best way to sample it is by ordering a Cook Out Tray. The food is outrageously inexpensive when compared with what we typically see in New York City, and where else can you get a quesadilla and a corn dog as sides in addition to your entree?

And then ... there are the milkshakes.

There are more than 40 flavors to choose from — picking just one is a Sisyphean task. So we ordered two: mint chocolate chip and Reese's Cup.

Our food order consisted of two combo trays — a lot of food for less than $15.

The double burger is far from a classic fast-food burger, especially when ordered Cook Out style. The burger is topped with chili, coleslaw, mustard, and onion, which makes for a surprisingly balanced palate.

The beef and the hearty chili add a satisfying heft despite the burger's standard size. The vinegary kick of the coleslaw and mustard cuts through the savory chili, and the coleslaw adds a unique crunch to its textural tapestry. This is a burger inspired by Carolinian culinary traditions — you can't get that at any old In-N-Out.

Cook Out's real star shines with another item not found at most fast-food joints: the barbecue sandwich. It's the right size — filling, but not overwrought. It's unique without being flashy.

It's a shame a lot of fast-food chains don't have barbecue pork on the menu, but it makes Cook Out's all the better. The pork is incredibly tender and rich — just fatty enough to satisfy the brain's primal taste receptors. The slaw plays a bright and crisp foil to the meat, and the bun is noble in its simplicity and strength.

The choice of sides is astounding in its breadth. You can get a corn dog with your burger — what a time to be alive. This corn dog won't change your life, but the mere fact that it can be ordered is reason to celebrate.

The hush puppies, another traditional Southern addition, pack a punch. The taste of cornmeal is robust and flavor-forward in these crispy, fried nuggets of Southern hospitality.

Less inspiring are the onion rings, which attempt to overcompensate for a lack of flavor with an oversized structure that often ends up unwieldy and limp. They're OK, but that's it.

As we picked up our milkshakes, we noticed something else that isn't present at most fast-food joints: a Bible verse printed on the cup, plus a patriotic "God Bless America" next to it.

The milkshakes are perhaps the thickest ever made. They're practically ice cream in a cup. And this is no complaint. While difficult to drink at first, waiting a few minutes helps. Or you can take the quickest route and just use a spoon. There's a wealth of Reese's chunks throughout — no skimping here.

The mint chocolate chip is another crowd-pleaser. Again, Cook Out doesn't skimp on add-ins — the chain has packed it with chocolate chips, providing a rich counterbalance to the mint. The biggest issue (if you can call it that) with Cook Out's shakes is how filling they are. Finishing one and the hearty tray of food is probably more calories than we should ingest in a day, much less in a meal. But the shakes are so tasty, it's hard not to just keep going.

The shockingly low prices make Cook Out a destination unto itself, and the quality of the food is solid. The barbecue pork is tender and juicy, and the burger is stalwart in its simplicity. Cook Out has a leg up on the competition thanks to the inclusion of Southern fast-food classics on the menu — and, of course, the more than 40 flavors of milkshakes.

But a question lingers: Is it better than Shake Shack or In-N-Out? For burger quality, probably not. But if you're looking for a chain that serves a corn dog as a side and a burger covered in coleslaw and chili, Cook Out will beat the coastal-elite competitors any day of the week.

11 presidents and first ladies with huge age differences

first couples

  • President Donald Trump and first lady Melania's 24-year age difference isn't the largest the White House has ever seen.
  • Among the many first couples in White House history, age gaps have spanned up to 30 years.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

President Donald Trump and first lady Melania set a record for being the only first couple in which the commander in chief is on his third marriage.

Though the couple also has a noticeable age gap of 24 years, they're only third in the ranks of sizeable age gaps among first couples.

From the Reagans to the Tylers, these are the nine presidents and first ladies with age differences of nine or more years. Notably, the men were always older than the women.

John and Julia Tyler: 30 years

The Tylers hold the title of the couple with the largest age gap in the White House.

Julia, then 24, caused a stir after her wedding to the 50-year-old president as crowds of thousands flocked to see her as they traveled by train from New York to Washington, DC.

Though their marriage lasted until John's death, it got off to a rocky start when Julia's family became deeply upset over not being included in the 12-person ceremony they held in New York City.

Grover and Frances Cleveland: 28 years

Grover Cleveland was 48 when he became the first sitting president to get married in his wedding to 21-year-old Frances Folsom.

The couple knew each other for a long time before they tied the knot, as Folsom was the daughter of Cleveland's longtime law partner. Many in Washington expected him to marry a Folsom, but most were expecting it would be Emma Folsom, his partner's widow.

Donald and Melania Trump: 24 years

The real-estate mogul Trump's third marriage was to 35-year-old Melania Knauss in January 2005.

The two first went public nearly a year after they met at a party in a Times Square nightclub during fashion week in September 1998. Since then, the two were visible at the top of New York society before moving to the White House after Trump's 2017 inauguration.

During their time as the first couple, the Trumps have sparked extensive scrutiny amid cheating rumors and multiple women accusing the president of sexual assault.

James and Dolley Madison: 17 years

James Madison, when he was 43 years old, married 26-year-old Dolley Payne Todd on September 15, 1794. It was her second marriage after her first husband died in 1793.

Federalist newspapers in Baltimore and Boston targeted Dolley during the 1808 election, implying she had intimate relations with her husband's friend and colleague President Thomas Jefferson. The rumor eventually fizzled out, and her popularity as first lady surged.

Woodrow and Edith Wilson: 16 years

Woodrow Wilson married 43-year-old Edith Bolling Galt while in office, in what was the second marriage for both of them.

The couple caused a stir because they met when Wilson was still in mourning for his first wife, who died the year before he married Edith.

But Edith rose above and beyond the expected duties of a first lady after the president suffered a severe stroke in 1919, when she essentially ran the executive branch.

Millard and Caroline Fillmore: 13 years

Caroline was 30 years old when she married 43-year-old Millard Fillmore in 1858.

Fillmore's second marriage came five years after the death of his wife and first lady, Abigail. It was also Caroline's second marriage, as she was widowed by a wealthy businessman, and required the former president to sign a prenuptial agreement before they wed.

John and Jacqueline Kennedy: 12 years

Jacqueline Lee Bouvier was 24 when she married then 36-year-old Sen. John F. Kennedy on September 12, 1953. Seven years later, Kennedy became one of the youngest presidents in US history.

The couple charmed America with their good looks despite the rampant cheating rumors that surrounded their time in the White House. After his assassination in 1963, John was survived by Jackie and the couple's two children.

Ronald and Nancy Reagan: 10 1/2 years

Ronald Reagan was 41 when he married his then 30-year-old second wife and future first lady, Nancy, on March 6, 1952.

The couple settled in Los Angeles, where his political career would take off nearly 15 years later when he was elected governor of California.

James and Elizabeth Monroe: 10 years

James Monroe, then 28, married 17-year-old Elizabeth Kortright on February 16, 1786.

The couple settled in New York, while it was still the nation's capital. After her husband became president in 1817, Elizabeth became a fashionista first lady through her style, which blended American and European attitudes, earning her the nickname "La Belle Americane."

Rutherford and Lucy Hayes: 9 years

Rutherford B. Hayes, then 30, married 21-year-old Lucy Webb on December 30, 1852.

While serving as first lady from 1877 to 1881, Lucy spearheaded a project to commission several portraits of presidents and first ladies for the White House and encouraged her servants to pursue their educational goals.

Though she was known for pushing reforms in mental health, orphanages, and homelessness, Lucy was frustrated with the restrictions women faced in the military and politics.

Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln: 9 years

Abraham Lincoln, then 33, married 23-year-old Mary Todd on November 4, 1842.

Lincoln had broken his first engagement to Todd, but the two settled down as newlyweds in Springfield, Illinois. The couple would go on to lead a troubled family life, as three of their four sons would die from various diseases and injuries before reaching adulthood.

The former first lady's dire mental-health state sparked grave concern from her family and friends after her husband's assassination on April 15, 1865.

The best baby hair conditioner you can buy

As a mom of two, I understand that choosing a hair conditioner for your baby comes down to four essential criteria: ingredients, purpose, fragrance, and cost. I personally wanted to find a baby hair conditioner that was made with natural ingredients that would be gentle on my babies' skin.

But how do you know if products that claim to be made with natural ingredients are actually good? How do you know if it de-knots or soothes frizzy hair? And is it perfect for sensitive skin?

I found answers to all of these questions as I researched the best baby conditioners you can buy. I've also used all of these products with my own children.

Here are the best baby conditioners you can buy in 2019:

Keep scrolling to check out our top picks.

The best overall

The California Baby Calendula Hair Conditioner soothes and shines all hair types with its super gentle natural ingredients, and you only need a small amount each time so it lasts longer.

I adore the California Baby Calendula Hair Conditioner. I first discovered it when my daughter's fine hair had become brittle and frizzy. I needed something gentle, that detangled knots easily, and controlled the growing frizz.

A few mom friends used California Baby, so I gave it a try. Within one wash, I noticed a big difference in my daughter's hair. Her once dry curls rejuvenated with a glossy shine.

Another thing I loved was all the natural and organic ingredients. The baby conditioner is free from parabens, sulfates, preservatives, and synthetic fragrances. The main ingredient is the organic calendula flower, grown in Santa Barbara, California.

I also recommend the matchingCalifornia Baby Calendula Shampoo. The baby shampoo and conditioner combo is affordable and lasts a long time. Plus, you don't have to worry about what's in the products.

Tons of people love California Baby conditioner. One reviewer said, "Love this conditioner. My daughter has a sensitive scalp (she still had cradle cap at 2 years old). This is the only conditioner that got rid of her cradle cap and haven't used anything else since."

It truly is a great smelling and exceptional baby conditioner that won't harm your little cutie, yet leaves her hair soft and silky.

Pros: All natural, safe, gentle, perfect for sensitive skin, long lasting, detangler, made in the USA

Cons: None

Buy California Baby Calendula Conditioner on Amazon for $17.99

The best for curls

The Shea Moisture Mango and Carrot Extra-Nourishing Conditioner is a gentle and safe conditioner perfect for curly locks and zapping hair with extra moisture.

The Shea Moisture Mango and Carrot Extra-Nourishing Conditioner smoothes and moisturizes your baby's hair, working out knots while nourishing and strengthening hair. You can use the conditioner for people of all ages from babies to adults.

All of the ingredients are natural, and some are certified organic, making it an excellent choice for those who shy away from harmful chemicals. It's naturally scented with mango, carrot, and orange blossom extract. I found the scent mild, but some reviewers found it overpowering.

While it's great for curls, it's also nourishing for dry and brittle hair. If you like the conditioner, they offer amatching shampoo. I even had a mom friend tell me she loves theShea Moisture Baby Shampoo with argan oil for herself and baby. For those who don't want a conditioner but curling cream after the bath, the company has ahibiscus curling cream that works well.

You can find Shea Moisture conditioner at most major retailers, so it's widely available and reviewed. On average it receives a4.2 out of 5-stars on Target and4 out 5-stars on Amazon.

One Target reviewer said: "Smells amazing! My daughter has thick curly hair that always tangles. This shampoo leaves her hair soft and bouncy." If you want a conditioner that nourishes curls and dry hair and doesn't hurt the wallet, Shea Moisture conditioner does the job right.

Pros: Cost-effective, nourishing for dry hair, organic ingredients, protects curls

Cons: Strong smell, not as pure as other natural conditioners

Buy the Shea Moisture Mango and Carrot Extra-Nourishing Conditioner at Target for $8.79

The best detangler

The Little Twig Detangling Conditioner is perfect for detangling baby locks naturally.

As I was perusing reviews about baby conditioners, I stumbled across quite a few that mentioned the Conditioning Detangler by Little Twig. I was intrigued by thegreat reviews, so I ordered some to try.

I was amazed by how quickly it flew through my daughter's rumpled hair from a long day at daycare. In seconds, her hair was smooth and unknotted.

After the bath, combing her hair was a cinch. It is safe, gentle, and effective. The texture is soft and creamy, and a little goes a long way. All of the ingredients are natural and mostly made up of certified organic essential oils, aloe vera, and calendula. You can leave the conditioner in or rinse-out.

Some reviewers mentioned using the conditioner more on wet hair than dry hair. For more fine hair, rinsing it out is better. I found that if you use too much, the hair is slightly oilier than average.

You can use the detangler conditioner for infants, all the way up to adults. I tried it and worked pretty well. You only need a small amount, and it has a subtle natural tangerine scent. If you prefer other scents, the company also offerscalming lavender, berry pomegranate, andfragrance-free.

Pros: Safe, gentle, effective, excellent detangler, natural ingredients, certified organic

Cons: Better on wet hair

Here's what it's like to watch New York's Fourth of July fireworks show from 7,000 feet in a private plane

FilipWolak_July 4 2019_0005_8120

Millions of New Yorkers flocked to either side of the East River on Thursday for the annual Macy's Fourth of July fireworks show — but a few lucky New Yorkers got an especially unique view of the action.

During the half-hour fireworks spectacular, nearly a dozen private and sightseeing aircraft were seen circling and hovering above Brooklyn to watch the fireworks display. In addition to a few helicopters that operate tourist flights above the city, a small airplane spent the show circling off the southern tip of Manhattan.

Filip Wolak@filipwolak on Instagram— is a commercial and art photographer who also happens to be a private pilot. He and a friend, Krys Krudysz, took Filip's Cessna 172M Skyhawk, a four-seat single-engine propeller plane, out above the water to watch the fireworks on Thursday. As Krudysz took the controls, Wolak got to work with his camera and three different lenses.

"It was too dark for any zoom," he told Business Insider. "That made shooting a lot more difficult because the frame was actually achieved by the position of the plane."

He stayed slightly above 7,000 feet for the whole show to avoid Class B controlled airspace, in which he would have required a special permit and would have been required to stay in constant contact with air traffic control. At his flight level, he was well clear of any departing or approaching traffic from the nearby airports, and Kris was able to monitor the onboard radar for safety.

Here they are — the Fourth of July fireworks.

Seeing them from 7,000 feet above is a totally different experience.

This shot was taken from right above the barges.

Four barges were arranged just south of the Brooklyn Bridge. The exact positioning of the barges changes each year based on weather and river currents.

Millions of people gathered to watch the fireworks this year from Manhattan and Brooklyn, according to WNBC.

The barges are synchronized to launch simultaneously.

You can see One World Trade Center through the smoke from the fireworks.

Here's a closer look of the gotham cityscape enveloped in colorful plumes emitted by the fireworks.

And here it is again, as the smoke cleared out.

As reported by WNBC, a record 70,000 aerial shells were used for this year's display.

According to AM New York, the first fireworks display took place in 1958.

One thing is for certain — there's nothing like celebrating the Fourth of July from above.

The more levels of security you have on your Mac, the safer your files will be. This is particularly true if you allow multiple people to use your computer. For your most sensitive files, it's a good idea to create a password-protected folder, for an extra layer of protection.

If you right-click on a folder, password protection isn't one of the menu options. But you can easily create a protected folder on your Mac with these steps.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

MacBook (From $1,299 at Apple)

How to password protect a folder on Mac

Turn your folder into a .dmg file to protect sensitive files

To create a password-protected folder on your Mac, follow these steps to turn your folder into a disc image file (.dmg).

1. If you haven't done so already, create the folder you want to encrypt and add your sensitive files to it.

2. Open the Applications folder on your Mac.

3. Open the Utilities folder.

4. Open the Disk Utility app.

Utilities folder contents

5. From the menu at the top of your screen, to the right of the Apple icon, choose File.

6. From the File menu, choose New Image.

7. From the New Image menu, choose Image from Folder.

Disk Image menus

8. From the folder window that opens, choose the file you want to add a password to and click Choose. You can rename the file once you choose it, if you want.

9. In the window that has popped up, there are menus for Encryption and Image Format. You'll need to change both of these from the default choices.

10. Click the menu next to Encryption and choose "128-bit AES encryption (recommended)." If you want a higher level of security, choose "256-bit AES encryption (more secure, but slower)."

Choose Encryption from menu

11. Once you have chosen your encryption level, a window will pop up that asks you to set your password. Click the key icon to the right of the password to see how secure your password is. In this popup, you can also choose to have a password created for you.

12. Enter the password twice and click Choose to set your password. Make sure you remember or make a note of your password. Otherwise, you won't have access to your files either.

Window that pops up when you click the key icon

13. Click the menu next to Image Format and choose "read/write."

14. Click Save. It will take a few moments for the app to create a disk image of your folder. Click Done to exit.

15. Your original folder still lives on your Mac, unencrypted. Once you are sure you can access the disk image and the files in it, delete your original folder.

How to use a password protected folder

Your password-protected folder will appear in your Finder window as a .dmg file. Double click to open it. You will be prompted to enter your password when you open the file.

The disk image of your folder will appear under Locations on the left side of your Finder window after you open it with your password.

Click on the folder name in the Locations menu to view the files in it. You can drag files into the .dmg folder the way you would a regular folder. You can also save new files into this folder.

Once you enter your password, the disk image remains open and in the Locations menu until you eject it. Right click on the folder and choose "Eject [folder name]" to close your folder. It will disappear from the Locations menu.

The Disney heiress who has demanded a wealth tax on the ultrarich and thinks private jets should be outlawed finally sets the record straight on her personal net worth

Abigail disney

Abigail Disney is an outspoken critic of the wealth divide in America — but, before a June 5 interview with the Financial Times, she had declined to share exactly how wealthy she is.

"I'm going to just say it," Disney told the Financial Times. "I'm roughly around $120m and I have been for some time now."

Disney, the granddaughter of The Walt Disney Company cofounder Roy Disney, said she found it easier to talk about sex than money.

Despite this, the 59-year-old heiress does not seem to mind speaking out about wealth inequality in the US. She criticized the salary of Disney CEO Bob Iger and defended Meryl Streep after she called Walt Disney a "bigot" in 2014, according to CNN Business

In June, she was among a group of 19 ultrawealthy Americans who signed an open letter to the 2020 presidential candidates expressing the group's support for a moderate wealth tax on the 1%. The wealth tax, the letter's signees said, would generate revenue that could pay for initiatives to slow climate change, fuel economic growth, and fund public healthcare. George Soros and members of the Pritzker and Gund families also signed.

Disney said in March that she would outlaw private jets if she could because they shield billionaires from discomfort, according to The Cut.

"[Income inequality] is the game changer that we're living in right now," Disney said on "CNN Tonight" on June 24. "We're creating a superclass so far above the vast majority of people that they don't share the same planet anymore."

Disney has given away $70 million of her personal fortune over the past 30 years.

"The internet says I have half a billion dollars and I might have something close to that if I'd been investing aggressively," Disney said, according to the Financial Times.

How to tie a tie in a Windsor, Half Windsor, and Four-in-Hand Knot

how to tie a tie

  • Neckties add style, polish, and a finishing touch to your look.
  • Knowing how to tie one is a simple, useful skill that anyone can learn.
  • We'll show you how to tie a necktie in a few easy steps and explain the three most popular knots that everyone should know.
  • We also recommend a few great ties from the Tie Bar, Brooks Brothers, Turnbull & Asser, and Bonobos.

Whether you wear a suit to work every day or you just want to add some extra sophistication to your outfit, a necktie will elevate your look and earn you instant style points.

The most dapper guys might even suggest that the tie is the centerpiece of a man's look: The shirt collar folds around it, it covers the buttons, and the jacket lapels fall to either side of it to create a symmetrical, balanced ensemble.

Traditionally, ties are mostly worn by businessmen, lawyers or bankers, but this versatile accessory is making a comeback with younger men in diverse, creative professions.

The selection of stylish ties is now more diverse, so you can find one to suit your taste. If you wear a suit to work, you'll need a few ties with small patterns and subtle colors.

It's also fun to play around with fabrics. Just as you wear lighter clothes in the warmer months, you can have a linen or a seersucker tie on hand for some great summer looks.

According to the experts at Brooks Brothers, there are three most popular knots that everyone should know how to tie.

The 3 most popular tie knots

  • Windsor Knot: This is a full, classic knot worn for formal and semi-formal occasions.
  • Half Windsor Knot: This knot is smaller and therefore more casual, but still appropriate for formal events like work or weddings.
  • Four-in-Hand Knot: This is an easy, versatile knot with a slightly asymmetrical shape which lends it a more low-key sensibility.

We're going to start with the Four-in-Hand, since it's usually the knot most people learn to tie first and also requires fewer steps.

Keep scrolling to learn how to tie a tie in the 3 most popular knots:

How to tie a tie in the Four-in-Hand knot

  5. Pull the wide end through the neck loop.
  6. Bring the wide end down through the neck loop
  7. Tighten the knot.

4. On the Add Bookmark page, you can edit the name of the bookmark and even tweak the URL if necessary — just tap either of those fields and type as needed.

5. If you want to store the bookmark in the default Favorites folder, tap "Save." If you want to choose a different folder, tap "Favorites" and then choose a folder (or create a new one) and then tap "Save."

If you save your bookmark to the default folder, it will appear in the list of favorites when you open a blank new tab in Safari, giving you fast access to commonly used web sites.

bookmarks 2

The difference between favorites and bookmarks in Safari

You might notice that when you tap the Share button, there are options to add both a bookmark and a favorite. Since the Favorites folder happens to be the default location to save bookmarks, this can be somewhat confusing.

bookmarks 3

In reality, favorites are just a special kind of bookmark. If you save a bookmark to the Favorites folder (either using the Add Bookmark button or the "Add to Favorites" button in the Share menu), it's effectively the exact same thing as a favorite.  If you store a bookmark in a different folder, you'll need to navigate past the default Favorites folder to find them.

Bottom line: Using the "Add to Favorites" button does the same thing as using the default folder for "Add bookmark."

The best wood stains you can buy

$
0
0

  • Wood stain adds rich color to all sorts of wood, bringing out natural grain, altering its color to recreate a different type of wood, and refreshing the appearance of older materials that have faded with time and exposure to the elements
  • Use care when deciding whether to use an oil-based wood stain or a water-based stain.
  • Both have their pros and cons, and one will usually be more suitable for a given project.
  • Varathane Fast Dry Interior Wood Stain is our choice for the best wood stain because dries in just one hour and usually requires just one coat.

Wood stain is the quickest and easiest way to dramatically change the appearance of a piece of furniture, a deck, flooring, or any other wooden surface that needs some restoration or a whole new look. When you choose the right wood stain, it's easy and satisfying to work with, and you get results that last for years, if not indefinitely.

How do you choose the right wood stain, though? First, know that wood stain is a product that changes the color of a wood, like its name suggests. It's not a varnish or lacquer meant to seal or protect wood without changing the color. A good stain will add protection against fading and can make wood more resistant to water and rot, but it won't protect the surface from scratches or gouges, so consider a top coat material once the staining is done and dried.

Oil-based wood stain is slow to dry, but once it is fully set, it lasts longer than water-based stains. Oil wood stains sink deeper into the wood and create a rich color, and they add a moderate hydrophobic effect to the wood, too. For most exterior stain projects, oil-based stains are the way to go (the exception being wood that is naturally resistant to rot, like redwood or cedar).

Water-based wood stains are ideal for indoor projects, as they give off less VOCs (volatile organic compounds) and have less odor, and because they dry much faster than oil-based stains. Water-based stain is less durable than oil stains, but they also clean up easier, a plus if you spill any while working in your home.

Those are the basics on how to choose a wood stain. As for a few great stains to consider, here are brands I and thousands of other satisfied strainers have long trusted.

Final notes: Remember to sand well, wipe away all the dust you create, and spot test the wood stain on a scrap of wood or somewhere that won't show, because staining wood is permanent!

Here are the best wood stains you can buy in 2019:

Keep scrolling to check out our top picks.

The best overall

Varathane Fast Dry Interior Wood Stain is an oil-based wood stain but it gives off minimal odor and dries quickly, so it's suitable for indoor use.

Most oil-based wood stains take hours to dry and give off a terrible odor in a confined space. Also, said odor is an indicator of compounds you really don't want in your lungs. Thus, many oil stains have been relegated to exterior use or to projects like flooring when the home is going to be clear of people for some time anyway.

Varathane Fast Dry Interior Wood Stain goes on smoothly, spreading with ease and offering great coverage. One quart can cover up to 275 square feet of surface if you're only doing a single coat, and for most applications, one proper coat of this stuff is enough. Being oil based, it penetrates deep into the wood, ensuring a rich, even color. Thanks to its semi-transparency, it creates that rich new color but still shows off the grain of the wood.

This is a perfect stain for projects ranging from furniture restoration to trim enhancement, but it's even durable enough for use on flooring, and make a great choice for smaller flooring projects where you don't want to have to vacate the home during then drying and off-gassing.

I've used Varathane stains on shelves and an end table and found it remarkably easy to work with, both using a rag and a paint brush. Based on the 1,680-plus reviews posted on Home Depot's website and the 4.2-star overall rating shoppers have given it, I'd say many people agree with me.

Pros: Extra fast drying for oil-based stain, smooth and even coverage, low odor

Cons: Lighter woods will require multiple coats contrary to brand claim

Buy a quart of Varathane Premium Fast Dry Interior Wood Stain from Home Depot for $8.98

The best solid stain

BEHR Premium Solid Color Waterproofing Exterior Wood Stain and Sealer solves two problems at once, bringing rich, lasting color to exterior wood and sealing it against water and weather for years to come.

Every homeowner has household tales of woe, and one of mine involves wood stain. We had just added a patio area after completing an extension to our lovely Glendale, CA home and my wife and I both loved the rich grain of the wood our contractor had chosen for the flooring. To our dismay, the next day we realized his painter had used a solid stain on the wood, all but completely concealing the grain and changing the color to a much darker brown.

As much as I missed the lovely grain I knew was just below my feet, I have to admit that for the remaining three years that we lived in that home, that outdoor wood flooring stayed in perfect condition, not a hint of fading, cracking, or discoloration anywhere despite hours of sun, occasional lashing rain, and loads of windblown debris.

Solid wood stain is so called because it creates a solid, opaque finish. Rather than complementing the color of and the grain of the wood you're staining, it completely changes the color and hides the grain, but as it sinks into the surface, some of the texture of the wood will still be visible. So the wood on your deck, shingles, door, or trim will still look like, y'know, wood.

BEHR Premium Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain and Sealer is made using an acrylic solution, so once applied and dried, it seals in wood, protecting it from rain, snow, moisture in general, and preventing rot. This stain is a perfect choice for decks or porches made from a wood like pine that, left untreated, will eventually fall apart with exposure to the elements.

It's a decent price, though hardly a steal, but a good, thick coat of the stuff should last at least four or five years in most conditions. If you use a sprayer, it's super easy to apply, but even with brushes or rollers, it's still a user-friendly stain.

With more than 375 reviews posted on HomeDepot.com, BEHR Premium Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain and Sealer has a solid 4.3-star averaged rating.

And a writer from ConsumerSearch called BEHR Premium Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain and Sealer excellent at "resisting mildew, cracking, color change, and more."

Pros: Seals and protects wood, resists fading and cracking, multiple application options

Cons: Slight orange hue comes out on certain woods, hides wood grain

Buy a gallon of BEHR Premium Solid Color Waterproofing Wood Stain and Sealer from HomeDepot.com for $38.98

The best gel stain

Minwax Gel Stain resists drips and is easy to control, making it perfect for detailed applications, such as to antique furniture or for use on doors or trim you can't remove prior to staining.

To count the number of times I've dripped one wood stain onto wood of another color entirely, I'd need a few extra fingers. Fortunately, most of the time I spotted the spill and quickly wiped the stuff up, leaving no lasting trace of my sloppiness. There are a few spots in a few residences around the country, however, where a white oak floor has a little patch of mahogany, or a walnut bookshelf has a suspicious spot of cherrywood. Oh well.

To avoid those drips that can ruin a perfectly good floor, shelf, or any other wooden whatnot that's not on the slate to be stained, use Minwax Gel Stain. This thick non-drip stain adheres well to your rag, sponge, or brush, letting you complete careful, detailed staining projects with minimal risk of the stain getting where it shouldn't.

This is the perfect stain for use on doors you don't want to pop off the hinges and take outside or for built-in features like door trim, shelving, window benches, and so forth.

Now, you will have to pay for that ease of use and lack of mess. A quart of Minwax Gel Stain is almost triple the price of many other stains. But beyond its lack of mess, it's also highly versatile. This stain can be applied to materials like metal or fiberglass, adhering much like paint and creating a faux wood finish. Yet when applied to real wood, it sinks in fast and lets the natural grain show.

With nearly 500 reviews posted on Amazon at the time of this writing, Minwax Gel Stain has a rich 4.4-star overall rating.

A writer from WoodMagazine said you called gel stains "goof-proof" and perfect for the novice, saying you could use "Minwax products for all of your staining work" to save yourself from messes and mistakes.

Pros: Non-drip minimal mess formula, can be used on fiberglass and metal, easy to use and clean

Cons: Not suitable for larger projects like flooring or walls, expensive

Buy a quart of Minwax Gel Stain from Amazon for $24.22

The best water-based stain

SamaN Interior Water Based Stain is easy to handle, spreading on smoothly without leaving overlapping marks.

Once you apply wood stain, there's really no going back. So if you apply too much stain, creating uneven dark patches, your project is in a spot of trouble. Short of committing to the darkness, so to speak, or doing some serious sanding, there's no repair to be made.

SamaN Interior Water Based Stain helps prevent that all-too-common wood staining problem by minimizing overlap marks. The stain blends evenly with itself, so when one pass of your rag, sponge, or brush overlaps with a previous application, the finish will still look even as long as you wipe away the excess stain in a timely manner.

SamaN stains are easy to clean up, washing away from most surfaces with soap and water, again provided you're prompt in the cleaning. This water-based stain is safe for use indoors and around pets and kids, as it dries quickly and has only a moderate odor.

Also, it comes in an astounding variety of colors. Of the 40-plus options at your disposal, there are standards like Walnut and Mahogany as well as more out-there colors like Lime, Navy, or Raspberry.

With well over a hundred reviews posted on Amazon, SamaN Interior Water Based Stain has a solid 4.4-star overall rating.

Pros: Does not create uneven overlap marks, single coat needed in most cases, great color variety

Cons: Expensive and small quantities per bottle

Buy a 12-ounce bottle of SamaN Interior Water Based Stain from Amazon for $11.95

The best eco-friendly stain

PureColor Eco-Friendly EvenGrain Stain is nontoxic and nonflammable, and it gives off almost no odor or VOCs whatsoever.

If you care about the health and safety of your family and pets and about protecting Mother Earth, then good for you, sir or madam, you get it. And you'll probably want to get PureColor Eco-Friendly EvenGrain Stain, by the way, because this stuff is made using about as safe a formula as possible in the wood stain category. It's nontoxic, it's not flammable, and it's almost odor-free.

This stain releases almost no VOCs, making it safe for use indoors even in close quarters shared by people of all ages and by pets. As for how the stain actually performs, it's largely transparent, revealing and enhancing existing wood grain with minimal grain rise, and penetrating deep enough into the wood to create a rich new coloration.

For a stain this safe that's actually of decent quality, of course, you're going to pay a good deal. At about $25 a quart, this isn't the right stain to use for refinishing a deck or staining the panels in your Victorian-style office. But for breathing new life into that dining room table top or basement bar, this is a fine stain around which you can actually breathe as it dries.

Several dozen people have reviewed PureColor Eco-Friendly EvenGrain Stain on Amazon and they have given the stuff a fine 4.3-star review overall at the time of this writing.

Pros: Almost odor free, recyclable packaging, nontoxic and nonflammable

Cons: Expensive for the category

Buy a quart of PureColor Eco-Friendly EvenGrain Stain from Amazon for $24.95 (plus shipping)

What else we considered

The five stains featured above are all exceptional products, I can personally vouch for most of them, and I made sure to cross-reference the experts on the rest. But they are hardly your only options, and depending on the staining project at hand, another brand may well be a better choice. So here are a few more to consider, and an explanation of why they are on the B-team.

The billionaire cofounder of Home Depot plans on donating up to 90% of his $5.9 billion fortune, and Trump's 2020 campaign will be one of the beneficiaries

Bernie Marcus home depot

Home Depot cofounder Bernie Marcus has a plan for how to spend his fortune, he told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. After the 90-year-old billionaire dies, 80 to 90% of his total wealth will go to his foundation to build centers to help veterans with disabilities around the country, fund medical research, and provide care for children with autism.

Aside from philanthropy, Marcus is also a major political donor: He supported, and intends to again support, Donald Trump's presidential bid.

The Atlanta-based billionaire has a net worth of $5.9 billion, down from its peak of $10 billion in September 2018, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Marcus and his wife, Billi, signed The Giving Pledge in 2010. He has already donated $2 billion to more than 300 charities, according to The Washington Post.

According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Marcus refused to name the exact sum he would donate, but the newspaper estimated that Marcus could give away a total of $6 billion to charity in his lifetime based on his commitment to donate 90% of his wealth when he signed The Giving Pledge.

Donation cause No. 1: Trump's campaign

Marcus was one of Trump's largest donors in 2016, giving $7 million to Trump's campaign through outside groups, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Marcus said he planned to financially support the president in the 2020 election, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Donation cause No. 2: philanthropy

Marcus is a noted philanthropist in Georgia, having donated $250 million to fund the construction of the Georgia Aquarium, which opened in 2005. Marcus has also made contributions to an autism center and Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Healthcare and medical research were the fourth most common cause that billionaires donated to in 2018, Business Insider previously reported. Marcus' political donations are less common among billionaires: only 12.4% donated to public-affairs causes. Education charities are the most popular, receiving donations from 79.5% of billionaires.

"I've got all the houses I need," Marcus told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "I live very well. My kids are taken care of. Everything I live for now is finding the right things to put my money into and that can give me a rate of return in emotion and doing good things for this world."

Marcus cofounded Home Depot in 1978 with Arthur Blank after they were fired from their jobs at another hardware store, according to Forbes. Marcus was the company's first CEO and retired in 2002. Bloomberg reported that the chain of home-improvement superstores now has more than 2,200 locations in North America and made $108.2 billion in revenue during the 2018 fiscal year.

'Stranger Things'' new season features a slew of iconic stores that no longer exist

stranger things scoops ahoy steve robin

"Stranger Things" is back, and Netflix's nostalgic scare-fest is serving up its most retail-oriented season yet.

A significant amount of the action in the show takes place in Hawkins, Indiana's new Starcourt Mall, which attracts the show's young characters and throws the small town's economy for a loop.

While fan-favorite character Steve Harrington is toiling his summer away at the fictional Scoops Ahoy! ice cream parlor, Starcourt features plenty of other real-life retailers.

Some, like the Gap, Orange Julius, and JCPenney, still exist. But others have since been forever sucked into the retail equivalent of the Upside Down.

Here are a few of the stores featured on "Stranger Things" that no longer exist:

Sam Goody

Sam Goody is referenced a number of times in the show, but this music retailer is, in fact, gone for good.

Founded in 1951 as a vinyl record store, Sam Goody went on to become a significant music retailer in the United States. Best Buy gobbled up Sam Goody's parent company, Musicland, in 2000, and it sold the company to private-equity firm Sun Capital Partners three years later.

Sam Goody faced the music in 2006, when Musicland filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. The brand hasn't quite sung its swan song though, as it still survives on Trans World Entertainment's website and in two remaining physical stores.

Wicks N' Sticks

It's a blink-and-you-miss-it appearance, but candle retailer Wicks N' Sticks momentarily flickers across the screen in Starcourt Mall's fictional advertisement

On Milwaukee reported that the company sold candles for every occasion, as well as a slew of quirky wax sculptures.

Wicks N' Sticks was permanently extinguished in 2006 when its holding company Home Fragrance Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, according to the Houston Business Journal.

Waldenbooks

Waldenbooks is sure to be an important destination for some of "Stranger Things'" more bookish characters. This longtime competitor of Barnes & Noble is one of the stores prominently featured in Netflix's Starcourt Mall teaser.

The first Waldenbooks store launched in 1962, although its founders had been in the book-renting business since the 1930s. Kmart snapped up Waldenbooks in 1984, the year before the events of "Stranger Things" season three. Within Kmart, Waldenbooks and Borders would eventually merge and later spin off as an independent bookseller in 1995.

Borders marked its newfound independence by beginning to phase out the Waldenbooks name, and both booksellers shuttered for good after the Borders Group filed for liquidation in 2011.

Hot Sam Pretzels

"Stranger Things" episodes tend to be as twisty as a pretzel, so it's appropriate that Hot Sam Pretzels is one of the proprietors located in Starcourt's food court.

Hot Sam was first cooked up in 1967 Detroit and began to expand across the country in the subsequent two decades, the Los Angeles Times reported.

But Hot Sam's piping-hot success would cool thanks to a series of acquisitions. Mrs. Field's bought up Hot Sam in 1995 and rendered the brand defunct a decade later.

Chess King

Chess King has since lost its crown, but the 1980s proved to be the heyday for this menswear retailer.

A 1998 Los Angeles Times article listed the chain as a good fit for "trend-conscious young men." But fashion is fickle, and The New York Times reported that the retailer fell on "hard times" in the 1990s thanks to changing fashion trends.

Chess King was officially checkmated in 1995, when its parent company Merry-Go-Round closed its remaining stores.

Wyatt's Cafeteria

"Stranger Things" has frequently featured secret government and military operations, so the inclusion of Wyatt's Cafeteria in Starcourt's food court is fitting.

Wyatt's first opened in 1931 in Dallas, specifically to cater to defense plants and the North American Aviation Company.

Rival buffet-style chain Luby's bought up Wyatt's in 1996.

Kaufman Shoes

"Stranger Things'" jumpier moments might have viewers quaking in their boots, but the footwear at Kaufman Footwear is no longer available for purchase.

It should be noted that one of the stores within Starcourt Mall is named Kaufman Shoes, while a real-life, defunct Canadian brand was known as Kaufman Footwear. It's unclear whether or not this is a reference to the actual company, or a strange coincidence.

The company declared bankruptcy in 2000, according to the University of Waterloo's website.

Melania Trump statue

  • A life-size statue of First Lady Melania Trump that was carved out of a living tree with a chainsaw was unveiled in her hometown of Sevnica in Slovenia on Friday.
  • The sculpture's commissioner said he understood why some people would think the sculpture "falls short as a description of her physical appearance" but maintained that it was still "absolutely beautiful."
  • "You know what makes her resemble Melania?" a woman who went to see the sculpture asked. "Look at how high she climbed to the top, just like real Melania, who rose to the top of America. A little girl from Sevnica. Hats off to her."

A life-size statue of First Lady Melania Trump that was carved out of a living linden tree with a chainsaw was unveiled near her hometown of Sevnica, Slovenia on Friday.

The statue was formed from the trunk of a linden tree, Reuters reported. Melania's sculpture appears to be wearing the same light blue-colored outfit as the one worn during President Donald Trump's inauguration in 2017.

The sculpture was carved by Ales "Maxi" Zupevc, using a chainsaw after being commissioned by 39-year-old artist Brad Downey, an American artist based in Berlin, according to Reuters and Agence France-Presse.

Zupevc is a local resident of Sevnica and was born in the same hospital and year as Melania, Reuters reported. Commissioned art pieces like the sculpture does not keep Zupevc employed full-time — the chainsaw-artist normally works as a pipe-layer.

Downey told AFP he understood why some people thought the sculpture "falls short as a description of her physical appearance" but maintained it was still "absolutely beautiful."

A group of people gathered at the site to see the sculpture's debut.

"The sculptor worked a long time on this, I think it took him three days to make it," one man said to Reuters. "He did it all using a chainsaw, and that's what made it hard to make it — and she does not look as beautiful as she normally is."

One woman said the sculpture as an inspirational message of Trump's journey to becoming the First Lady.

"You know what makes her resemble Melania?" a woman asked, according to Reuters. "Look at how high she climbed to the top, just like real Melania, who rose to the top of America. A little girl from Sevnica. Hats off to her."

Trump was born in April 26, 1970. In 1996, she began a modeling career and eventually moved to New York, where she became a US citizen ten years later. In 2005, 34-year-old Melania married 58-year-old real estate mogul Donald Trump.
