  • Starting your own garden can be overwhelming, so it helps to do your research and figure out what kind of garden you want to grow based on your needs, goals, and available space.
  • "Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture" by Toby Hemenway is a classic and comprehensive guide to backyard gardening.
  • It details an inspiring theory about creating small-scale yard eco-systems and includes easy-to-follow instructions that will make sense to both beginners and experts.

Tis the season to get outside! And gardening is a great way to get your nature on. It's therapeutic, good exercise, productive, and relaxing all at once. But what if you're a beginner and don't know where to start?

I hit the books to find the very best gardening resources in the bookstore. You'll notice that four out of five of our picks are specifically for second editions of bestselling classics. That means these powerhouse guides have been tried and tested for years, and then updated to address reader requests so you get the very best.

From my own personal favorites, to expert-recommended stand-outs, I dug through gardening texts available on Amazon, my city's library, and a few reviewer books from publishers to find the best.

Whether you're looking to design a secret flower garden in your backyard, turn your lawn into your own private vegetable farm, or just want to beautify your fire escape with a few choice potted plants, you'll find your starting point in one of our top gardening book picks.

Here are the best gardening books for 2019:

The best overall

"Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture" by Toby Hemenway contains all the info you need to create the perfect garden.

The original edition of "Gaia's Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture" first came out in pre-Y2K days and was widely regarded as an inspiration to eco-minded gardeners everywhere.

Author Toby Hemenway stresses the importance of choosing companion plants that work together and help each other grow. His ideas about how to encourage natural symbiosis and creating backyard habitats for helpful insects and critters helped urge the wave of interest in organic gardening from a trend to an all-out movement.

Now, the second edition has been named the winner of the 2011 Nautilus Gold Medal Award and is one of the top ten gardening books of 2009 in The Washington Post's rankings. It has become required reading for small-scale gardeners everywhere.

As fellow bestselling gardening author, Paul Stamets puts it in his review of the book, "Toby Hemenway's "Gaia's Garden" will be recorded in history as a milestone for gardeners and landscapers — a fusion of the practical and the visionary — using the natural intelligence of Earth's symbiotic communities to strengthen and sustain ecosystems in which humans are a partner, not a competitor."

"Gaia's Garden" is, of course, also a favorite of novice gardeners who almost uniformly give it 5-star status on Amazon. Reviewers love how the author puts difficult theories into simple, actionable words. A helpful tip: One reviewer said they recommend reading the last chapter first, since it's sort of a summary. Then you can break down the rest of the ideas more easily.

My very favorite part of this book is the illustrated planting maps showing which plants work best together. The idea for more natural circular growing patterns over my stuck-in-the-past in-ground rows is definitely going to influence my veggie-plot design next spring.

Pros: This book provides easy-to-follow instructions along with a great intro to basic gardening theory

Cons: Although there are several photos and illustrations, other books on this list have more visually appealing full-color eye-candy

The best for beginners

"The Garden Primer" by Barbara Damrosch helps novice gardeners get to know the basics without getting too overwhelmed.

"The Garden Primer" is just what the name describes. It's a beginner's resource designed to teach the basics. It also works really well as a reference book where you can look things up even after you've got your garden going.

The book starts with the ABC's of "What Plants Need," then covers everything from what kind of tools you'll want when you're just starting out, to how to buy plants at the store, to how to keep your soil fertile year after year.

There are also chapters on each general type of plant, i.e. bulbs, vegetables, ground cover, houseplants, you name it, so even experts might find out new things perusing the pages. It's a terrific way to get the facts on how to garden, but I also loved the author's style which makes you feel like you're reading for pleasure, not just for information.

As a reviewer from the Seattle Times said, "Barbara Damrosch's writing has the snap of a good snow pea and the spice of an old rose." And as one Amazon reader wrote, "This is easily one of the best gardening books ever written."

Pros: This book covers the essentials in a way that makes gardening feel accessible, even to novices

Cons: The book is labeled 100% organic, but the instructions sometimes say to use treated wood, which would make your garden technically non-organic

The best for edible gardening

"The Vegetable Gardener's Bible Ed. 2" by Edward C. Smith is a glossy guide to growing your veggies that manages to cover a wide range of topics with depth, while being accessible.

The well-organized structure and detailed glossary of "The Vegetable Gardener's Bible" allows readers to jump right in anywhere in the book to learn about just one topic, or can start from the beginning to get a full education in edible gardening.

As one of several hundred five-star reviewers wrote on Amazon, "Each page [of the glossary] includes: the name of the vegetable, information about it, where they like to been sown and grown, seed depth, germination soil temperature, days to germination, when to sow indoors…when to sow outdoors…growing pH, growing soil temperature, spacing in beds, watering, light needed, nutrient requirements, rotation considerations, and seed longevity."

Those on the newbie end of gardening will love the "easy step-by-step directions on planting," combined with "lots of great pictures," as Amazon user, Lynn G. explains. But if you'd like to read more broadly into basic concepts of gardening, some sections of the book cater to that desire as well. I really liked the sections on "good" and "bad" garden bugs, and how to get away with less weeding.

As the number one bestseller in Amazon's Vegetable Gardening category, you won't be surprised that it's an all-around great resource for home growers of edible gardens. It's also the number six overall bestseller in Amazon's Gardening and Landscape Design category, which includes thousands of texts.

The author, Edward C. Smith, has reportedly spent decades with his wife living on a self-sufficient, off-grid property, where they feed themselves all year round from their garden. It's easy to trust a source that has such success when they walk the walk, as well as talk the talk.

Pros: A comprehensive guide to growing your own food geared to get the highest yield with the least work

Cons: The scope is mostly for middle-range gardeners, so experts and complete novices may not find what they need

The best for small space gardening

Even if you only have a few feet to work with, you can still score a bountiful harvest with "All New Square Foot Gardening" by Mel Bartholomew.

Working in a garden and enjoying its rewards is both therapeutic and tons of fun. So why should the joy of gardening be restricted to country and suburban dwellers with tons of open space? Answer: it shouldn't! "All New Square Foot Gardening" is an Amazon number one best seller in the 'urban gardening' category that's well-known by experts everywhere.

The author, Mel Bartholomew, is the inventor of the raised bed grid system of gardening designed as a "revolutionary way to grow more in less space." Notable gardening expert, Mike McGrath recommends the book, saying the original version is "said to be the best-selling gardening book of all time." And that this second edition is even better and more comprehensive.

He also explains that where the raised bed and grid planting system made the book famous, "the real benefit of his technique is rooted in his emphasis on … excavating your rotten local soil and replacing it with "Mel's mix"— essentially a combination of a light soil free mix and high-quality compost."

This legendary bestseller contains the absolute go-to advice for people who are serious about growing tons of productive, beautiful plants in a limited space. I also loved the glossy photographs showing step-by-step instructions for some of the more complicated processes. And that's my only real caveat in recommending this book — that you do need to be prepared to invest lots of time and effort up-front with this process, as you'll have to overhaul your soil.

That said, his system means I have more tomatoes and kale than I know what to do with all summer.

Pros: The advice in this book has become the go-to method for small space home gardeners, and will be sure to net you lots of produce to share with friends and neighbors

Cons: Things are a bit more complicated than seeds, soil and water, you have to invest some effort into following instructions precisely

The best for organic gardening

"Rodale's Ultimate Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening" by Fern Marshall Bradley is an exhaustive and practical resource with beautiful pictures.

Rodale has been a leading publisher in the organic gardening world for more than 50 years, so the current edition of the "Encyclopedia of Organic Gardening," edited by Fern Marshall Bradley, has just gotten better over the years. Although many of the texts on this list deal with organic gardening, this one has a particularly robust selection of new and updated organic methods and trends.

The newer edition also has a brand-new section that specifically covers "earth-friendly techniques for gardening in a changing climate, covering wise water management, creating backyard habitats, managing invasive plants and insects, reducing energy use and recycling, and understanding biotechnology."

There are sections on vegetables, fruit trees, and all kinds of botanical curiosities, as well as material on community gardening and the wildlife your garden may attract. The encyclopedia format makes the text easy to use as a shelf reference for experienced gardeners, as well as a how-to read-through text for beginning growers.

I also think this book makes for a great coffee-table book with its impressive collection of full-color, glossy images. I would definitely say this is the most attractive of our best gardening book picks. Even if I wasn't interested in all the how-to knowledge and theory, I would still buy this book just to flip through the pictures.

Pros: You'll love the easy-to-use and comprehensive structure, as well as the striking images

Cons: Like many encyclopedias, this book covers tons of topics, but doesn't go overly deeply into any one subject

These $150 city-running sneakers are responsive, breathable, and deliver on the cushioning I need to run on New York City streets

  • Swiss-based company On recently released a new $150 sneaker, the Cloudswift (men's sizes here), designed to provide urban runners with a light and swift shoe.
  • In person, the sneaker delivers. It's light, fast, and had adequate cushioning against tough NYC pavement.
  • However, Cloudswift won't be ideal for narrow feet or those looking for good ankle support.

If you've ever spent an afternoon striking against sidewalks and city streets on a run, you're probably familiar with the aches and pains that can accompany it. Urban runners have often found themselves stuck between asphalt and a hard place: buy bulky, super cushioned shoes, or deal with discomfort.

But Swiss-based company On recently launched a sneaker that's meant to solve the urban runner's grievances. Cloudswift ($149.99) is designed as a lightweight, swift-moving sneaker that can absorb impact from your feet hitting the tough pavement and return energy, without the compromise of added bulk or weight.

In person, the shoes deliver. They're a great companion on both long and short runs in an urban environment. Whether worn for five miles or 10, they provided a responsive, firm ride that didn't tire out. Despite the fact that I felt a sinking feeling upon opening them (they look far too lightweight to inspire confidence against New York streets), they proved me wrong. They have a fast toe-off and feel lithe underfoot. A springy, well-designed sole rerouted the impact of striking tough ground and helped propel me forward. The women's shoes are listed as eight ounces, but they feel lighter on. The look is slim and attractive, the mesh sock is breathable, and stability is solid.

pdpgallery 1920x1280 2

How do the Cloudswift shoes feel light, but provide ample cushioning? The difference-maker is its Helion super-foam sole. To get granular, the foam shapes collapse diagonally to increase horizontal cushioning while rubber reinforcements provide traction. Because of where it connects in the forefoot, there should be more directional push-off without energy loss. In the end, you get a comfortable, resilient sole that doesn't cede its rebound or rely on bulk.

However, it's worth noting that if you have narrow feet, or you really need solid ankle support, these probably aren't the best running shoes for you. The design of the Cloudswift's upper comes with its tradeoffs. The mesh provides breathability and flexibility, and a rubber band on the outside of the mesh serves to hold the foot firmly in place. But since the laces are on this rubber band, and effectively stop at the midfoot, you'll need to over-tighten the laces for a firm heel fit or better-but-not-perfect ankle stability. For me, this wasn't a deal breaker. If it is for you, check out our buying guides to the best running shoes for men and women for more options.

The bottom line

All in all, if you're looking for shoes that feel light and swift but provide adequate cushioning for runs around the city, On's Cloudswift sneakers are a solid option. Their Helion super-foam is responsive, firm, and provides good ongoing energy return. If you need great ankle support or have narrow feet, you may want to keep looking.

Twitter can be a source for breaking news, trending memes, and updates from friends. At the same time, it can feel like a nuisance of knee-jerk reactions and misleading information.

If you're ready to say sayonara to the social media app, you can easily do so from your iOS device in just a few steps, demonstrated here on an iPhone.

How to deactivate your Twitter account on an iPhone

1. Open the Twitter app on your iOS device. Slide to the right to access the main menu.

2. At the near bottom of the menu, select "Settings and privacy" by tapping.

Twitter1

3. In the "Settings and Privacy" menu, select "Account" right under your Twitter handle.

4. In the "Account" menu, scroll to the bottom of the page and tap "Deactivate your account."

5. The next three steps are similar to each other — confirming you do indeed wish to deactivate your Twitter account. Once you reach the "Deactivate your account" menu, Twitter gives you the opportunity to download your data, or change which account you wish to delete. At the very bottom the this page, you will find the words "Deactivate" in red letters. If you wish to continue, tap it.

6. Next you will be prompted to enter your Twitter password. Do so, then tap "Deactivate" in the bottom right corner. The option will be bolded once you've entered your password.

7. A pop-up should prompt you to finallyfinish deactivating your account. Remember: Twitter gives you 30 days to reactivate your account by simply entering your prior login credentials. If you wish to proceed, press "Yes, deactivate". This will then take you to the Twitter login page after successfully deactivating your account.

How to delete the Twitter app off your iPhone

1. To delete the Twitter app off of your iOS device, go to your homescreen. Find the Twitter app and hold it down until it begins to shake. Then, tap the 'x' in the top left-hand corner.

'What is Amazon Locker?': Everything you need to know about Amazon's convenient delivery pick-up system

Amazon Locker_Meira Gebel

  • Amazon Lockers are like "self-service kiosks" where you can go to pick up items you've purchased on Amazon. They're located in more than 900 cities across the US.
  • If you live in a city like New York, Los Angeles, or Seattle, chances are you've seen Amazon Lockers in grocery stores, pharmacies, and convenience stores.
  • They literally look like lockers, so there are size limitations, but you don't have to be an Amazon Prime member to use them, and there's no additional fee for using them.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

If Amazon wasn't already one of the most convenient shopping options available today, it certainly increased its claim on the title after unveiling the Amazon Locker system.

Amazon Lockers are "self-service kiosks" located in popular places like grocery stores and pharmacies where you can pick up the things you've ordered on the site for no additional fee.

Amazon first launched Amazon Lockers in 2011 in New York City, London, and its headquarter city, Seattle. The company has since expanded their footprint in recent years to Whole Foods, 7-Eleven, Century 21, Rite Aid, and other retailers in the US and abroad. Amazon Lockers were even at the Coachella Music Festival this year.

Today, there are thousands of Amazon Locker locations in more than 900 cities across America, according to Amazon's website.

An Amazon Locker may be especially desirable for those who live in big cities and aren't comfortable leaving packages in a regularly trafficked lobby or on a doorstep. The lockers can also provide some relief for those weary of porch pirates.

How Amazon Locker works

Before ordering on Amazon as you normally would, make sure to have added the location of your neighborhood Amazon Locker to your shipping addresses. This can be found by going to Account > Ordering and Shopping Preferences > Your Addresses. To find the closest Amazon Locker to you, do so by logging into your account here.

Once your order has been delivered, Amazon will send you a six-digit code for your Locker. Once you go to your Locker, enter the code on the Locker's screen and a door will pop open — your package will be inside. You will have three days to go grab your items. If you don't get there in time, the items will be taken back, and you will be refunded.

Amazon Prime subscribers will typically receive their items in two days, but you don't have to be a Prime member to use Amazon Lockers.

A helpful tip to remember is that Amazon Lockers are literally lockers, so they have size limitations. All items in your order will have to be within 16 x 12 x 14 inches and weigh less than 10 pounds.

So, you can't realistically use Amazon Locker for orders like furniture. You can find out what is eligible here.

amazon locker

How and when you can use an Amazon Locker

Anyone with an Amazon account can use Amazon Locker if there is one in their area. Access to Amazon Lockers depend on the store hours of the location where the Amazon Locker is.

For example, if your items are at a Whole Foods, your access to the Amazon Locker depends on the store's opening and closing time. One of the major benefits of Amazon Locker is being able to pick up your order on evenings and weekends.

amazon locker 2329

Can you return items to Amazon Locker?

Yes. If an item is eligible to be returned to an Amazon Locker, it will say so when you go to return the item through the site's Online Returns Center. Size limitations also apply. Learn more about returning an item through Amazon Locker on Amazon's website.

  • Eyeliner doesn't have to be intimidating.
  • With a good eyeliner and a little practice, you can get the perfect cat eye or any liner look you want.
  • The 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil from Urban Decay is our top pick for best eyeliner overall because it glides on smoothly to create many different looks and stays on for up to 24 hours.

Eyeliner is definitely a if-I-have-time beauty item, but man, does it makes a big impact when I use it.

While eyeshadow and mascara can draw attention to and open up your eyes, eyeliner defines their actual shape and helps make deep-set or small eyes look a little bit larger — at least, when wielded correctly.

Since there are so many eyeliners out there, we decided to make your shopping a little bit easier by rounding up the best choices in several different categories. So whether you like your liner subtle and natural, in which case, a traditional pencil is your best choice, or dramatic and winged out — reach for liquid or gel — you'll definitely start making time in the morning to use any of these picks.

Here are our picks for the best eyeliner in 2019:

The best eyeliner overall

The Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil glides on without tugging, sticks around without smearing, and has a huge range of both wearable and fun colors.

Want a subtle, slightly smudged line? You got it. Want a winged cateye that won't smear or smudge? No problem. Want an eyeliner pencil in every color under the rainbow? Then you'll love Urban Decay's 24/7 Glide-On Eye PencilThe only difficulty is going to be choosing your favorite one out of the 45 shades.

Urban Decay is known for trendy, high-quality makeup with tons of pigment and unconventional names. You'll find a shimmery copper pencil called Smog, a matte gray pencil called Desperation, and a shimmery purple pencil called Vice, to name just a few. But the names are part of the fun with this premium brand.

The 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil is waterproof, so it stays in place even through the saddest movie or the happiest wedding. But it doesn't tug on lids or set in with a dry feeling. In fact, half of the ingredients are moisturizing for a creamy, soft feeling on your lids.

Once applied, you have around 30 seconds to gently smudge the line, if desired. After that, the color is set until you take it off.

More than 10,000 of the 15,300+ reviews on Sephoragive it five stars — that's a lot of satisfied buyers. Happy customers praise the vibrant colors, smudge-free performance, and ease of gliding the pencil around the eyes.

Pros: Huge choice of colors and finishes, won't smudge, gentle on delicate skin, easy to use

Cons: Not a swivel-up liner, so you'll need a sharpener to keep the point honed

Buy the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil at Sephora for $22 (originally $20)

The best eyeliner pencil that swivels up

With the Sephora Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil, you'll always have a freshly sharpened point, making it easy to draw a precise line.

If you don't want to be bothered with a separate sharpener for your eyeliner pencils, you'll appreciate the convenience of Sephora's Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner Pencil.

As the name suggests, this liner sticks around until you take it off, but that doesn't mean it's difficult to use or that it will tug on your skin as you apply. It glides on smoothly and blends out easily with the built-in smudge tip if you want a smoky look. But once set, the liner stays in place without running or smearing.

There are more than 6,000 reviews of this popular eyeliner pencil on Sephora, where the product holds a 4.3-star average out of 5. One pleased shopper summed up the words of many with her comment, "I have been using this eyeliner for years. Easy application, long lasting, no smudge. Simple and efficient!"

There are 19 colors to choose from including a few fun brights. Most are slightly shimmery, but there are some matte choices, including black.

Pros: Self-sharpening, has a built-in smudger, nice colors, waterproof formula

Cons: Most of the colors are shimmery, so if that's not your thing, your selection will be limited

The best liquid eyeliner

If you love the drama of cateye liner, you'll love how easy it is to achieve with Stila's Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner.

Liquid eyeliner has a learning curve — there's no getting around it.

While it creates the most dramatic lines out of all the other formulas, it's also the easiest type mess up whether you apply unevenly, layer on too heavily, or smudge by accident. Stila's liquid eyeliner makes it a little easier, however, with its convenient design.

Much like a felt-tip marker, it's fairly easy to draw a line as thin or as thick as you want, and if you want a little flare, the marker makes it easy to achieve a cateye wing. The waterproof formula dries quickly, and won't smudge or smear once set. Stila's eyeliner is our top pick in our guide to the best liquid eyeliners too.

There are more than 6,100 reviews of the eyeliner on Ulta, and 90% of those reviewers said they'd recommend the product to a friend. Many buyers commented on how easy it was to apply the eyeliner and how long it lasted without running. On the downside, some did mention that it isn't easy to remove — which actually is a testament to the liner's staying power.

There are 11 colors to choose from, including black, dark blue, deep green, and several shades of brown. There's even an icy white shade for the daring.

Pros: Pen-like design makes it fairly easy to use for a liquid eyeliner

Cons: Not a huge color selection, may be difficult to remove

Buy the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eyeliner on Ulta for $22

The best gel eyeliner

The Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner goes on with the drama of a liquid and the ease of a pencil.

If you crave the dramatic look of liquid eyeliner, but despair of ever mastering the small brush or marker format, you'll love the ease of applying Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner. It's shaped like a traditional pencil liner and goes on just as easily.

The lux gel glides on smoothly, so you won't feel any tug or pull around your eyes. It goes on with a strong line, but if you want to soften it, go ahead and smudge it quickly. Once it dries, it's set until you take it off. The formula contains skin-soothing ingredients, including vitamin E and rosehip oil, so it nourishes your eyelids as you wear it.

This is one of the most popular gel eyeliners on Sephora, where it has more than 3,600 5-star reviews and an average of 4.3 stars out of 5. A few shoppers did complain that the eyeliner didn't last as long as they'd expected and that it was difficult to apply neatly. But for the most part, buyers love the way it doesn't run or smear once set and that it's easy to apply. They're also impressed with the 40-shade lineup, and the array of natural and bold looks they can create.

Marc Jacobs Beauty Highliner Gel Eye Crayon Eyeliner comes in shimmer, matte, satin, and glitter finishes in a ton of colors ranging from neutral black and brown to lilac, hot pink, and bright blue.

Pros: Amazing color selection, easy to apply, easy to create bold looks

Cons: Might not last as long as expected, expensive for an eyeliner

The best affordable drugstore eyeliner

You don't have to break your budget to buy a great eyeliner when you can get the Slim Eye Pencil from NYX for less than $5.

Just because an eyeliner doesn't cost much doesn't mean it's not a great product.

Case in point: NYX Slim Eye Pencil.

This basic eyeliner goes on smoothly and contains coconut oil to help moisturize your lids. While it's not waterproof, it does stay in place quite well, and you can achieve a wide range of eye looks depending on your preference.

With more than 1,800 reviews and an average of 4.0 stars on Ulta, this is undoubtedly a popular eyeliner. Buyers commented that the pencil was easy to use and goes on smooth, easy to blend out for great daytime and nighttime looks, and easy to remove at the end of the night.

On the downside, some reviewers did feel the pencil didn't last long enough or smudged too easily, and some said the color faded as the day went on. But, in general, how long the pigment stays on your skin is made up of factors like your skin's oil levels, if you rub your eyes, and more so the wear-time is always subjective.

There are 24 colors of NYX Slim Eye Pencil to choose from including white, teal, baby blue, taupe, and seafoam green.

Pros: Great price, many colors, smooth application

Cons: Might smudge or fade for some

Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt's former home in Beverly Hills is for sale for $49 million, Mansion Global reported.

The current owner is Jonathan Brooks, a hedge fund executive who founded Smithwood Partners. Brooks bought the home from the actors in 2006 after their divorce, according to The Journal.

Aniston and Pitt bought the 12,000-square-foot California house for $13.1 million in 2001 from the entertainment attorney Ken Ziffren and spent three years renovating it, adding features including heated marble floors in the kitchen and a pub room with wood floors imported from a 200-year-old French castle.

The home, described by the Journal as a "French Normandy Revival property," has four bedrooms and comes with a swimming pool, ample outdoor space, and a championship tennis court. It's listed by Susan Smith of Hilton & Hyland.

The Journal previously reported that the home would list for $56 million, but the listing agent recently said that price was an estimate.

"We officially decided to go on the market just under $50 million, based on recent comps that have sold," Smith told Mansion Global. "We're not looking to test the market, we're selling this home at a realistic price."

This brand I discovered on Amazon is a lifesaver for renters who want inexpensive, but sturdy furniture

Zinus media table

  • Furnishing your place is probably the only fun thing about moving. But after paying the security deposit and first month's rent, buying furniture can seem like a nightmare.
  • When my fiancé and I were moving into a new apartment, we were looking for inexpensive but durable pieces of furniture that would last a few years and still allow us to eat like normal human beings.
  • We didn't want to spend our weekends browsing stores, so we spent our nights browsing Amazon instead and stumbled upon the brand Zinus.
  • To date, we've bought a bed frame with a headboard and three tables, and we are so satisfied.

There are two types of furniture — nice investment pieces that start in the high hundreds, or inexpensive throwaway pieces that won't last your next move. When my fiancé and I were moving into a new apartment in New York City a few years ago, we wanted items that were somewhere in the middle. Unsurprisingly, as with everything else we own, we found them on Amazon and they were all from new-to-us brand Zinus.

Zinus bedframe

To date, we have four items from the brand — a king-sized bed frame with headboard, coffee table, media table, and hallway table— and they've all survived two moves. I've written about the bed frame previouslyfor its inexpensive price tag and expensive-looking appearance. After we had the bed frame for a little while and were impressed with the quality and customer service, we decided to see what else Zinus had to offer, which is how we wound up with the three tables.

From what we saw initially, the brand had glowing reviews on Amazon for its mattresses and, of course, the bed frame. Reviews on Consumer Affairs were admittedly pretty awful, but most were also about the brand's mattresses. I've never used its beds before and we weren't in the market for one at the time, but if you're going to buy a product based on reviews (which is why you're reading this, right?), it's fair to say that you might want to look elsewhere for a good night's sleep. I also have to point out that when we were shopping a few years ago, the brand's website was not as well-designed and modern as it is now. In fact, I don't think it even had a website, which is why we relied on reviews so much.

Zinus coffee table

As far as non-bedroom furniture, we were intrigued by the Modern Studio collection for its low-profile styles and neutral dark brown colorway. They had mostly positive reviews with the expected sprinkling of negative experiences. They were also all under $100 and returns were free, so there wasn't anything to lose if the quality was truly awful. The brand also has another line of tables that incorporates lighter-colored wood called Farmhouse; they weren't available when we were shopping.

Read more: This $100 bed frame is one of the best purchases I've made for my apartment — and it only took 15 minutes to assemble

Our tables arrived flat-packed and with all the screws and tools needed to assemble, which brought back IKEA-induced PTSD but were thankfully a lot easier to set up.

Amazon and Zinus don't state how much the tables can hold, but based on how much we load them with, they can probably hold at least 20 pounds each. We have a large decorative mirror that's easily 10 pounds, a felt letter board, books, and miscellaneous items like hats and gloves that we'd otherwise forget to stuff into our jackets on the hallway console. Our media table holds several succulents, photo frames, and a video game console with tons of games, and the coffee table holds more books, board games, and our occasional feet when we're watching Netflix.

Zinus hallway table

In my experience, all the pieces from Zinus have held up nicely despite the low-price tags.

The bed frame is sturdy and the tables haven't bent out of frame or bowed from excessive weight. The pieces don't look cheap either, which surprised us given how inexpensive they are. Overall, I'd recommend this brand to renters who want decent furniture at a reasonable price and don't want live off instant ramen for a month.

How to download Netflix movies and shows onto your phone or tablet to watch when you're without internet

Netflix

  • Netflix provides an easy way to download video to your mobile device for times when you know you won't have access to internet service.
  • You can't download video in a desktop web browser to a computer, or to a smart TV.
  • When you no longer need your downloaded video, you can delete it through the Netflix app to save space on your phone or tablet.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Netflix remains the most popular video streaming service, according to Adweek, and that's not surprising; they've been in the video streaming business since 2007, and helped pioneer the streaming revolution.

But as convenient as streaming over the internet is, sometimes you'd prefer to download videos to watch without internet — if you're planning to fly on a plane, visit a remote location, or otherwise be away from Wi-Fi service, you might want something saved to your phone or tablet for offline playback. Netflix makes it easy to download video to a mobile device for just these kinds of situations.

But while you can download Netflix content to a mobile device, that's as far as you can go. Netflix does not offer any way to download videos in a web browser, so you can't download onto your desktop computer or laptop. Nor can you download video to a smart TV.

How to download movies and show from Netflix on a mobile device

1. Open the Netflix app.

2. Find the movie or TV show you want to download and tap it to open its Details page.

3. Tap the Download button, which is shaped like a downward-pointing arrow. The button will change to indicate it's downloading, and after a few moments (depending on the speed of your Wi-Fi connection and the length of the video) it will be complete.

download 1

Movies only have a single download button, while a TV series will generally have separate download button for each episode. Also, note that not every video on Netflix can be downloaded — due to licensing issues, you may find that there's no download button available for a movie you want to save.

How to watch a movie you've downloaded on the Netflix app

Once you download a movie to your iPhone, iPad, or Android device, you don't need to do anything special to watch it. Just return to the movie or TV show you want to watch and tap it to play as usual.

You can tell it has been downloaded to your mobile device because you'll see a blue icon representing your mobile device instead of the Download button.

download 2

In addition, you can tap "Downloads" at the bottom of the screen to immediately see a list of all downloaded movies and TV shows stored on your mobile device.

How to delete a downloaded movie from Netflix to free space

After you've downloaded some movies to your mobile device, you may eventually want to remove them to save space. There are two ways to do this:

  • To delete downloaded videos one at a time, go to the movie's Details page and tap the blue icon that tells you the video has been downloaded. In the pop-up menu that appears, tap "Delete Download."
  • To delete all your downloaded videos at once, tap "More" at the bottom of the screen and then tap "App Settings." On the App Settings page, tap "Delete All Downloads."

Wall Street thinks CBD could be a $16 billion industry by 2025. Here's what the cannabis compound does to your brain and body.

$

Marijuana edible

I knew I had arrived in California when a friend offered me an edible — for my dog.

The treat didn't contain THC, the component of marijuana that's responsible for getting you high. Instead, it was made with cannabidiol, or CBD, a nonpsychoactive compound in cannabis that is surging in popularity.

These days, you'll find everything from cupcakes to lattes made with CBD. Sellers say CBD has a variety of benefits, including anxiety relief and help with sleep and pain. But so far, there's little solid evidence to back up those claims.

Wall Street thinks the industry could be worth $16 billion by 2025, depending on how the federal government decides to regulate the compound. CBD's legal status is hazy. It can vary based on everything from the state in which it's sold to whether it comes from hemp or marijuana plants.

On Friday, regulators at the Food and Drug Administration are holding a public hearing to gather feedback on how to police foods, drinks, and drugs made with CBD or other cannabis compounds.

CBD does appear to have some limited clinical uses, and the FDA has already approved one drug using the compound.

Last summer, federal regulators approved the first prescription drug made with the compound — an epilepsy drug called Epidiolex that's used to treat seizures linked with two rare forms of the disease.

Beyond those specific therapeutic benefits, however, it remains unclear whether CBD has any broader benefits.

Scientists believe CBD could play a role in helping to produce many of marijuana's therapeutic effects, from relieving pain to curbing inflammation. But overall, the research on cannabis itself is early, it's too soon to say for sure whether CBD is useful for most people, or for our furry friends.

Here's what you need to know about the health benefits and limitations of the trendy cannabis compound that's showing up in everything from bottled teas and beer-like drinks to creams and dog treats.

SEE ALSO: Wall Street thinks the $1 billion market for CBD could explode to $16 billion by 2025

DON'T MISS: A pair of high-profile Stanford scientists wants to use marijuana to treat an entire class of diseases where big pharma has fallen short

These days, CBD is everywhere. But its legality may depend on several factors, including the type of plant it comes from.

CBD can either be manufactured from hemp, which President Donald Trump recently made legal for farmers to grow and harvest, or from marijuana, which remains illegal on the federal level.

A handful of boutique companies are now making lotions, creams, cupcakes, and cookies infused with hemp-derived CBD. The products are being sold everywhere from traditional marijuana dispensaries (in states where the drug is legal) to traditional stores (sometimes even in states where marijuana remains off-limits).

The Los Angeles-based Humble Flower Co. sells its lotions, creams, and massage oils at select California marijuana dispensaries only, but several other companies, such as Blue Ridge Hemp, sell their goods online and in stores across the country. Last summer, the trendy vegan fast-food chain By Chloe added a line of CBD-infused products to its menus in New York and called the new offering "Feelz by Chloe."

But starting in February, health-department officials in New York City began to crack down on some CBD vendors, warning of bans and fines.

CBD has some limited — and very specific — clinical uses. But it's still unclear whether it could have health benefits for most people.

In June 2018, a prescription CBD-based epilepsy drug called Epidiolex became the first of its kind to be approved by the federal government.

Taken as a syrup and made by the British-based drugmaker GW Pharmaceuticals, the drug is designed to treat seizures linked with two rare forms of childhood epilepsy. The drug is made with CBD harvested from marijuana plants.

Epidiolex contains very high levels of CBD — far higher than the amounts found in treats and drinks being sold today. For example, the average dose for an 8-year-old child taking Epidiolex is roughly 650 milligrams of CBD per day. By comparison, most CBD cookies, coffees, and creams contain about 5 to 20 milligrams of CBD.

Still, many scientists believe CBD could play a role in helping to produce many of the therapeutic effects tied to marijuana.

In marijuana plants, CBD exists alongside THC, the ingredient that's believed to produce most of cannabis' commonly known effects, including its characteristic high.

Researchers generally believe that when taken together in the plant, the two compounds produce their strongest effects. But they also believe that CBD alone could play a key role in everything from relieving pain to curbing inflammation.

These benefits have yet to be proven by solid scientific research. Scientists are now exploring the potential of CBD to treat things like pain and inflammation.

New drug companies have been sprouting up with the goal of capitalizing on CBD's potential therapeutic effects.

In fall, a pair of high-profile Stanford researchers launched a medical company to develop CBD-based therapies for conditions such as arthritis, Crohn's disease, and multiple sclerosis.

Called Katexco Pharmaceuticals, the company is exploring whether CBD might help treat digestive conditions characterized by swelling and inflammation, such as Crohn's and irritable bowel disease. Katexco is based in Canada but has a US subsidiary in Silicon Valley.

Katexco joins several other startups that hope to help turn CBD into federally approved pharmaceutical drugs. Part of its work could get easier when CBD can be made easily and cheaply in a lab, rather than from a plant.

Today, CBD comes from plants. But it can also be made in a lab — an advancement that could cut costs and save time.

Instead of sourcing CBD from marijuana or hemp plants, researchers could make it in a lab

In February, that happened for the first time. Using an increasingly popular approach known as synthetic biology, researchers at the University of California at Berkeley created the precursors to the cannabis compounds CBD and THC and then made the compounds themselves — no farm or field required.

If the technique can scale, it could pave the way for making marijuana's therapeutic components more quickly and efficiently, for a fraction of the cost of traditional methods.

The Berkeley scientists licensed their lab-made cannabis technology to a startup they created called Demetrix. Several other startups are also pursuing the same goal, including Ginkgo Bioworks, a synthetic-biology startup in Boston; Intrexon, a biotech in Maryland; and Hyasynth Bio, a Canadian startup.

Wall Street believes the CBD industry could be worth $16 billion by 2025, depending on how federal regulators decide to police it.

In a February report, Wall Street analysts at the investment bank Cowen highlighted CBD as a massive opportunity for growth. The analysts estimated that the US market for CBD could skyrocket from roughly $1 billion to $2 billion now to $16 billion by 2025.

Survey results included in Cowen's report found that 7% of respondents said they were using a CBD supplement. The report also estimated that Americans spent up to $2 billion on CBD products last year. Ostensibly, folks are using CBD for everything from pain to anxiety. But again, those benefits have yet to be proven by scientific research.

"This initial response piqued our interest considerably, as it was much higher than we would have expected," the analysts wrote.

Wall Street's CBD predictions could depend on how federal regulators decide to police the drug. For example, regulators could ban all CBD products, rule that cookies and creams can contain only a certain amount of the compound, or allow the products to exist legally so long as they're derived from hemp.

The Food and Drug Administration is holding a hearing on Friday to discuss how cannabis products should be regulated to inform the agency's work in the growing market.

Regulators are gearing up to decide how to handle CBD, and a major hearing is happening on Friday.

The legal haze surrounding CBDcould begin to clear as early as Friday, when federal regulators with the Food and Drug Administration are set hold a hearing on the compound.

Earlier this year, during a congressional hearing, former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb suggested his agency would take a somewhat flexible approach to policing CBD products, cracking down when the products make health claims, when CBD-infused food products are sold across state lines, and when the products are marketed as dietary supplements.

But Gottlieb left his post in April, and a formal replacement has yet to be announced. Before his departure, however, Gottlieb created a working group to focus on cannabis regulation. That group is cochaired by Principal Deputy FDA Commissioner Amy Abernethy and Principal Associate Commissioner for Policy Lowell Schiller. Ned Sharpless, the acting FDA commissioner, is leading Friday's hearing.

Philips hue lightstrip 2

In the Prime Days of yore, a few deals have consistently captured the attention of the masses: Instant Pots, Echo products, and Philips Hue smart light bulbs ranking among the highest.

And while Prime Day 2019 has yet to be announced (though we have our guesses), tracking deals from years past means you can reasonably expect decent deals to come.

Here are the Philips Hue Prime Day 2018 deals we expect to see again this year:

I've written a love letter to Philips Hue smart bulbs in my time at Insider Picks, and a few years later I'd still call the then-$150 Philips Hue White Ambiance Starter Kit (now $97.90) the best apartment upgrade I've ever made. The company also makes what we rank as the best smart light bulbs and the best smart light strips you can buy.

What makes Philips Hue light bulbs such valuable buys? The simple answer is how drastically they can improve the quality of your day-to-day life —with absolutely minimal intervention from you. Being able to dim or brighten the light in a room, or set schedules so they're on when you get home are simple luxuries you'll grow to appreciate. And getting to control them from your phone, watch, or by voice means you can turn the lights off without leaving bed or the couch. It also means you can wake up to a light that mimics the sun rather than soul-crushing fluorescents. The list of benefits goes on

If you're considering them, Prime Day is the best time to buy outside of Black Friday. If you already own them, you can save some money by restocking the bulbs while they're discounted.

A wealthy Saudi buyer has snapped up two neighboring Los Angeles mansions to create a $52.2 million compound, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The larger home, which has seven bedrooms and about 20,000 square feet of living space, sold for $45 million, making it the most expensive home sold in LA this year, according to The Journal.

The four-bedroom, 4,300-square-foot home sold for $7.2 million and will house the buyer's staff.

The buyer has not been identified, but Variety reported that the property was sold to an entity formed by a Pasadena tax attorney known for managing the finances of some of the wealthiest members of the Al Saud royal family.

How to delete your Netflix viewing history, and prevent something you've watched from affecting your viewing recommendations

  • Netflix uses your viewing history to make viewing recommendations and to let you continue shows in progress in the "Continue Watching" section.
  • If you want to remove individual shows or movies from your history, you can do that in a web browser.
  • You can't delete your entire Netflix viewing history with one click — you need to remove shows one at a time.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Netflix keeps a close watch on what you watch.

Most of the time, this is a good thing — because Netflix knows exactly what you are watching, it can place shows in progress in the "Continue Watching" section so you can easily pick up where you left off. It also can use shows you have watched to make better recommendations about what you might want to see in the future.

But if you don't want Netflix to use your viewing history, you have a little control. You can remove individual movies and TV shows from your history. This can keep Netflix from making viewing recommendations and is a sort of "nuclear option" for keeping other people on your account from seeing what you're watching.

But since you can't delete your entire viewing history at once, this can be time-consuming if you want to delete a lot of items.

How to delete your Netflix viewing history

1. In a web browser, go to the Netflix website. You can do this on a computer or in a browser on a mobile device, but you can't use the Netflix mobile app.

2. Click your account icon at the top right of the browser window, and then click "Account."

3. Scroll down to the section called My Profile and click "Viewing Activity."

4. On the My Activity page, you'll see a list of the most recent Netflix movies and TV shows you have watched. To see more, scroll to the bottom and click "Show More."

  • Whether you're a newbie in the kitchen, looking to expand your repertoire of cooking techniques, or just desirous of more recipe options, a good cookbook that spells out the steps involved in preparing the dish is a must-have.
  • There are a lot of books geared toward new cooks, but our favorite is "How to Cook Everything: The Basics" by Mark Bittman.

There are some cooks — my mother is one of them — who don't need a cookbook to come up with a delicious recipe because they have the talent and skill to create their own. And then there are cooks like me: easily able to follow a recipe in a cookbook and turn out tasty results, but not so good at thinking up new recipe ideas on my own.

As a result, I own a lot of cookbooks, and when it comes to those books, my preference is the simpler, the better. I don't want to spend too much time figuring out complicated techniques, hunting down exotic ingredients, or hovering over the stove. If you share that kitchen philosophy, we'll explain why you'll enjoy the following five cookbooks, all of which make it easy to turn out delicious results even if you don't possess the skills of a contestant on "Top Chef."

Here are the best cookbooks for beginners in 2019:

The best overall

You'll learn everything you need to know in the kitchen from "How to Cook Everything: The Basics" including kitchen equipment, basic to advanced techniques, how to design a complete meal, and plenty of tasty recipes.

Wondering what must-have equipment you need for your kitchen? Want to learn how to peel, trim, or dice? Not sure how to crack an egg, roast a chicken, or tell if the meat is done? With "How to Cook Everything: The Basics" you'll learn all of the above, along with much, much more.

Reading this nearly 500-page hardback cookbook, by acclaimed food journalist Mark Bittman, is like taking a class with a helpful cooking instructor. It's filled with photographs that clearly illustrate basic techniques, detailed notes telling you what to do and look for while cooking, helpful tips on how to buy, store, and cook food groups such as grains, seafood, and vegetables, and of course, 185 recipes for everything from side dishes to main courses and desserts.

Publishers Weekly says, "A wonderful book of perfectly simple recipes that every neophyte and experienced cook should have in their kitchen." The Oregonian says, "His five golden rules should be embraced by anyone who spends time in the kitchen."

With an average of 4.6 stars and almost 500 reviews on Amazon, it's clear that plenty of new cooks find the book helpful. One customer sums it up best: "The information really does cover all of the basics. There is information on basic techniques such as how to properly hold your knife, what different methods of cooking (boil, broil, sauté, etc.) are, and how to do them. Information on picking your ingredients to ensure they're fresh and/or ripe along with proper storage of the ingredients and proper cooking temperatures. The recipes vary in difficulty from how to make a very basic guacamole to a more complex braised beef with wine. The skill levels start as basic as how to properly remove rosemary from the stem and progress as the book progresses."

Pros: Very thorough coverage of basic cooking techniques, photos clearly illustrate cooking techniques, helpful tips on shopping and storing

Cons: A few customers complained that the book's binding didn't hold up well

The best for a Mediterranean diet

"The Complete Mediterranean Cookbook" teaches you all you need to know about this heart-healthy, weight-busting, delicious, and good-for-you style of eating and cooking.

The Mediterranean diet is a cooking philosophy, method, and group of recipes that center mostly around plants — whole grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, and olive oil — with just a little bit of fish or meat to add flavor and protein. The benefits of a Mediterranean diet are well-documented: weight loss, a lowered risk of diabetes and heart disease, stronger bones, better moods, and even reduced risk of cancer.

"The Complete Mediterranean Cookbook," from America's Test Kitchen, briefly covers everything you need to know about the Mediterranean diet, including its history and benefits, the staple foods that make up the diet, its particular food pyramid, how to design a well-balanced meal, and pantry basics to keep on hand, before diving into the heart of the 440-page hardback book (paperback and Kindle versions are also available): 500 recipes with color photos and clear explanations. You'll find chapters on cooking vegetables, grains, soups and salads, seafood and meat, beans, eggs, fruits, and desserts.

Fans of America's Test Kitchen cooking show on public television (as well as the magazines and books) know the recipes are extensively developed and tested by its team of chefs and food experts, and you'll find that meticulousness in this cookbook. While there are many fad diets you can follow, the Mediterranean diet is one that's recommended by many nutritionists and health experts.

The "dishes can easily be integrated into readers' existing menus," Publishers Weekly says, like the "Moroccan-style chicken and lentil soup, tagliatelle with artichokes and Parmesan, and garlicky roasted shrimp with parsley and anise."

The cookbook has a 4.5-star rating and more than 600 reviews on Amazon. One customer writes, "There are two things that make this book stand out. This is much more than a book of recipes. There are useful tips, explanations for why they chose a certain item (e.g., dried beans vs. canned, brand recommendations), and excellent charts that compare different types of legumes or fish or beans."

Pros: A thorough introduction to the Mediterranean diet, plenty of color photos, a wide variety of delicious recipes including some that are vegetarian and gluten-free

Cons: A few buyers complained that the font in the cookbook is too small, others felt that too many recipes required ingredients that weren't easy to find.

The best for quick meals

If you want to cook fresh, delicious food, but don't have much time to spare, you'll love the many fast, easy, and few-ingredient recipes in "Cooking Light Fresh Food Fast."

This paperback cookbook has more than 250 recipes — many requiring only five ingredients — that go from cupboard to table in 15 minutes or so, meaning you can prepare a healthy and tasty meal at home faster than you can drive through a fast-food joint.

"Cooking Light Fresh Food Fast" gives clear directions and offers plenty of kitchen shortcuts to help you make the most of your time. Recipes cover all the basics: soups and salads, sandwiches, poultry, meat, and seafood, as well as a full chapter on meatless main dishes. There are color photos of every recipe and suggested substitutions for ingredients that might not be easy to find.

The cookbook has a 4.3-star rating and 150 reviews on Amazon. One customer echoes my review: "What I really love about this cookbook is that it doesn't use a ton of ingredients, and the recipes are not super involved and don't take a really long time to prepare."

Pros: Reasonably easy and fast recipes, few ingredients required for many recipes

Cons: Some recipes take longer and require more ingredients. some complained that many recipes call for precut produce or canned produce or similar "convenience" items

The best for vegetarians

There's no need for meat when you have the nutritious and delicious recipes in "The Complete Vegetarian Cookbook."

Whether you're a new vegetarian, have been living a meat-free lifestyle for decades, or just want to incorporate more meat-free dishes into your diet, it's always nice to have some recipes at hand. "The Complete Vegetarian Cookbook" from America's Test Kitchen, contains recipes are clearly explained, delicious, and easy to make. Out of the 700 recipes, 250 are vegan, 500 are gluten-free, and more than 300 take less than 45 minutes from start to serve. Color photos are used to demonstrate cooking techniques, as well as show off the finished dishes.

The beginning of the book covers the basics of cooking vegetarian: equipment you'll need, how to chop and dice vegetables, pantry staples, and even a glossary of veggies both familiar and exotic. Then, you move on to the recipes, which are divided into chapters covering main dishes, soups and stews, pasta, rice and grains, beans, salads, breads, vegetarian side dishes, sandwiches, eggs, and snacks.

The cookbook has more than 700 reviews and an average of 4.6 stars on Amazon. One reviewer writes, "This book is a great reference for both those new and experienced. Most of the recipes seem to call for 'normal' ingredients I can get from my local supermarket as well ... I recommend this book to anyone who is vegetarian, or at least looking to add some more veggie dishes into their life."

The Spruce also picked this cookbook as its favorite for easy vegetarian recipes.

Pros: Huge range of vegetarian and vegan recipes with tips and suggestions for preparation and serving

Cons: Some customers complained that the book's binding didn't hold up well

The best one-pot cookbook

Forget about a kitchen sink loaded with dirty pots and pans; with "One Pot," you'll cook up a meal that leaves only one pot or pan to wash.

Why dirty multiple pots and pans when you only need one? That's the philosophy (and popular cooking trend) behind "One Pot" from Martha Stewart Living. This paperback cookbook has more than 120 recipes that are easy to make, clearly explained, delicious to eat, and healthy. Each chapter focuses on the one pot or pan you'll need for the recipe, including Dutch oven, slow cooker, skillet, roasting pan, pressure cooker, and stockpot.

Many of the recipes provide shortcut and substitution ideas, as well as sides that best complement the dish. Color photos bring the mouthwatering recipes to life and help clarify the preparation process. There's a nice mix of family favorites, such as beef stew with noodles, and more adventurous dishes, like short ribs with potato-carrot mash. You'll also find a complete chapter on desserts — no more store-bought goodies when it's so easy to make your own.

The Kitchn says the book is "simply written and full of great ideas, 'One Pot' gets my vote of confidence for its practicality and creative concept," and many recipes are "well-suited to fall and winter dinners."

"One Pot" has more than 350 reviews on Amazon with an average of 4.5 stars. One reviewer says, "What makes this cookbook so useful is the manner in which it is set up; each chapter covers a different type of cookware, and each chapter has recipes specific for that cookware. These are simple recipes that use everyday ingredients, and the food tastes great! At the beginning of each chapter, there is a description of the cookware and tips on using that particular pot."

Pros: Only one pot or pan to clean, a wide range of recipes that appeal to kids as well as adults, clear instructions and mostly easy-to-find ingredients

Cons: As with any cookbook, some buyers weren't thrilled with all of the recipes

How to backup your Android phone's contacts to Google, and restore them from a backup

Google Pixel

How many phone numbers do you know by heart? How long does it take to learn new ones when those change? Relying on tech to remember such things can feel a bit precarious, but there are just too many details for our brains to store. So it makes sense to defer to our devices for the vast majority of the various contact details that float in and out of our lives.

The easiest way to get your contacts saved across your various devices is by saving them directly to the Google account that's associated with those devices.

But you don't have to do this manually every time you have a new number or email address to add to your collection of contacts. And for those with Android devices, getting it done can be quickly and easily accomplished.

How to backup your Android contacts to a Google account

1. Go to your Settings.

2. Tap "System" and then choose "Backup" (it may also be under "Backup and reset," beneath the section for "User and backup").

2 SCREENSHOT BACKUP CONTACTS GOOGLE

3. Turn on "Backup to Google Drive."

How to restore your contacts from a Google backup

After completing the above steps, you'll have the option to restore any lost phone contacts by retrieving them from your backup later on. Here's how to do that:

1. Open your Settings.

2. Tap "Google."

3 SCREENSHOT BACKUP CONTACTS GOOGLE

3. Under "Services" select "Restore contacts" (depending on your device, it may also be its own section; and those with multiple Google accounts will have to select the correct one by tapping "From account").

4 SCREENSHOT BACKUP CONTACTS GOOGLE

4. Choose the device with the contacts you want to copy.

5. Tap "Restore" — wait until you see a confirmation message before navigating away from the screen.

When using the above restoration method, keep in mind that your device will only save contacts you don't already have saved. That way, you'll be able to avoid creating duplicate contacts. You can also opt to merge your saved contacts with the ones already saved on your device, which will get rid of those redundancies. Your new contacts will sync to your Google account as well as any accounts you have connected to it.

While you're restoring, you'll also have the option to skip saving to your SIM card or device storage after selecting the contacts you want to copy. To do that, simply turn off the "SIM card" or "Device storage" options before hitting "Restore."

This lightweight, bounce-free headlamp is the most comfortable I've tested — it's just $50

biolitelamp

  • BioLite's HeadLamp 330 ingeniously carries its lithium-ion battery pack on the back so it's balanced and not pulling your forehead down.
  • At less than 2.5 ounces, it weighs less than most (good) headlamps we've ever tested. It also might be the most compact.
  • Battery life can be an issue with a lot of headlamps, but BioLite's seems to last forever (I still haven't charged mine yet), and when you do run out, having a good power pack on hand solves any issues.

Headlamps may seem like lightweight, unrestrictive tools (or toys), but having those extra few ounces bobbing up and down on your forehead for, say, several hours at a time, takes its tolls. Not only are some of the heavier (if more powerful) options a literal drag, they're annoying, even if you don't realize it. I didn't.

Then BioLite sent over a few units of the HeadLamp 330, which I tried to pass around the office, excitedly. My excitement didn't carry, but that might be because most of my colleagues see about four trees on average per week (exact statistic), and tend to steer clear of the darker parts of the Big Apple at night. I maintain that they're missing out, but then there might be some wisdom in their reservations. I may never learn.

The specs

330 lumens of output is a good balance between what most of us need to be able to see in the dark and how long the battery life lasts, which is a respectable 40 hours on the low setting and 3.5 hours on high, give or take.

As stated above, the most notable spec about this headlamp is that the light and battery are separate, which puts a lot less weight on your forehead, and the light itself. The whole kit, I might add, weighs only 69 grams, or less than 2.5 ounces. One common problem we see a lot with headlamps is that the joint where the light meets the base loses its threads or just breaks altogether, especially when the batteries are in the same pivoting unit as the light. BioLite does away with any such worry.

Speaking of pivoting, the light pivots up and down between four positions, which is, in my opinion, just enough. There's also a red light, which makes it a lot easier for your eyes to readjust after you flick it off.

Lastly, it's rechargeable with a micro USB cable, so while there's no option to go for AA or AAA batteries, as long as you have a power pack with you, you'll be fine (it doesn't draw much power).

My field notes

So there I was in Central Park, late at night — no, no, this much I've learned not to do. You're welcome, Mom.

I took the BioLite HeadLamp 330 fishing at night, hiking to camp, hiking just to hike, and generally just stumbling about in the dark behind my father's woodshop, which is, for all intents and purposes, a treacherous deathtrap of wood and metal scraps. Yes, dearest reader, I take my job, and your safety, extremely seriously. I'm glad to report that, throughout the testing process, there was not a single visit to the emergency room.

In all seriousness, the best thing about the HeadLamp 330 is how well balanced it is. With the light in front and the battery pack in back, you don't feel the strain of a light and a battery pack dragging your forehead down, which I'll say, as someone who spends a lot of time outdoors both night and day, compounds over the course of a couple of hours. Add a strenuous activity, and many headlamps are bobbing up and down, giving you cramps in your neck, and headaches, too, in my experience.

The small on/off button (gray, left of center) can be a little hard to find at first, but you'll learn to love it because you'll find that you won't accidentally activate the epileptic test strobe in your hiking partner's face, and it's actually positioned right where you want to be (at least, if you're adjusting it with your right hand).

The bottom line

This is the headlamp for most people in most pursuits. I've tested some 15 headlamps in the last year, and while some have been more technical (and expensive), none of them have been anywhere near as comfortable as BioLite's. It might not be the pick for search-and-rescue teams (look to Coast for something a little more powerful), but for most of us, it's exactly what we need and nothing more.

Pros: Durable, moisture-wicking headband, balanced with light and battery in front and back, respectively

Cons: Doesn't take AAA or AA batteries as backup, the lithium-ion battery is not removable (you can't get a spare battery to take with you and swap out, but a power pack would fix that), 330 lumens is bright, but could be brighter (still, it saves on battery)

BioLite Headlamp 330, available at BioLite, $49.95

An economic bubble is about to burst, and these are the very clear warning signs

new york stock exchange the great recession

  • Scott Galloway is a public speaker, author, entrepreneur, and clinical professor of marketing at the New York University Stern School of Business. His newest book is "The Algebra of Happiness: Notes on the Pursuit of Success, Love, and Meaning."
  • In this excerpt, he argues that we are headed for another economic crash, that if you look around, it's not difficult to see the similarities between 1999 and 2019.
  • There are all sorts of signs that point to whether a company is prepared for a surprise economic downturn, and they're more obvious than you think.
  • For instance, when nations and firms start erecting big buildings or kids two years out of college are making six-figure salaries, look out, he says.
  • But the most obvious canaries within companies are typically manifestations of the CEO's ego: The strongest sell signals are "when the CEO goes Hollywood, or believes the world shouldn't suffer their absence from fashion covers and ads."
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

In 1999, I and a gaggle of other San Francisco internet founders and CEOs went to an airfield, where we browsed private jets. It made sense that, at 34, I should have a one-bedroom apartment to transport me across the surface of the atmosphere at mach .8, because I was a genius who could afford, on paper, to spend the equivalent of a thousand years of my mother's salary on a Gulfstream.

A bunch of thirty something jerks looking at planes, and it feeling normal, is a decent signal that the canary is dying and these budding masters of the universe are about to get b-----slapped  ... which we were. I never got the jet. (But I have achieved Mosaic status on JetBlue.)

Jamie Dimon, CEO of JPMorgan Chase, defines a financial crisis as "something that happens every five to seven years." It's been 11 since the last recession. As you get old enough to observe cycles as actual cycles, you begin to recognize that the economic time you're in is a point on a curved line, and, sooner than you think, the direction of the line will change. Better or worse.

An asset bubble is a wave of optimism that lifts prices beyond levels warranted by fundamentals, ending in a crash. In 1999, I promised myself that I'd be smarter next time. "Next time" meaning on the cusp of a pop or recession.

So, how do you ID when we've entered the danger zone, and should you adjust your behavior? There are several hard metrics for why we may be nearing a full-Monty bubble, including things my NYU colleagues spend a great deal of time thinking about and understand much better. But you don't need a Nobel to see the similarities between 1999 and 2019. Some of the softer metrics are far better canaries in this particular coal mine.

Signs that markets or a company are about to find themselves on the wrong side of cyclicality

  • The metrics around valuations, P/E ratios, and easy credit-inflating bubbles are logical indicators of canaries. Seth Klarman, the most successful hedge fund manager nobody's heard of, recently warned that the sugar high of stimulus combined with high-cholesterol protectionism doesn't end well.
  • When nations and firms start erecting big buildings, look out. The Pan Am Building, Sears Tower, and any number of giant penises plunging into Mother Earth in emerging markets are little more than multibillion-dollar d--- pics and may seem like a good idea at the time, but are just tacky.
  • The most obvious canaries within companies are typically manifestations of the CEO's ego. The strongest sell signals are when the CEO goes Hollywood, or believes the world shouldn't suffer their absence from fashion covers and ads. David Karp in J.Crew ads and Dennis Crowley in Gap ads should have told us their companies would soon be shadows of their former selves and valuations. Marissa Mayer's 3,000-word profile in the September issue of Vogue around the time she spent $3 million of shareholder money sponsoring Vogue's Met Ball is an indicator of poor judgment. This way of thinking leads you to spend another billion dollars of shareholder money to purchase the blog platform (Tumblr) of the guy who's in the J.Crew ads, only to find you spent $1.1 billion on a porn site that has little revenue.
  • A CEO's fashion can also be telling. When he or she starts showing up on stage wearing a black turtleneck ("I'm the next Steve Jobs"), it likely means not that Jobs has been reincarnated, but that the company's stock is about to crash (Jack Dorsey) and/or the FDA is going to ban you from your own labs (Elizabeth Holmes).Scott Galloway
  • Mediocrity + two years of tech experience = six figures. Kids who can code and are two years out of school, who are mediocre, are making $100,000-plus in the market. What's worse is that they believe they're worth it. If you can code, yay for you. But you have no real hard skills or management ability. Not recognizing that you're overpaid means you won't have the funds to avoid your parents' basement when s--- gets real.
  • Bidding wars for commercial real estate. Firms that investors believe are the next Google, armed with cheap capital, roam the streets of New York and San Francisco, driving up commercial real estate. They are also competing with the Four (Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google), which are purchasing superblocks in NYC.

I was invited to the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos when I was 32, pre-crisis, as internet entrepreneurs were the new masters of the universe. I met with several CEOs who wanted insight from me on business, as clearly I had unique insight. No, I didn't. I was a reasonably talented 32-year-old, who at any other time would have been making only a decent living. Instead, I was Yoda, lecturing more talented businesspeople on what their firms should do. When the dot.bomb hit, I was 34 and returned to Davos, where I couldn't get arrested  —  nobody would meet with me.

When times are bad, people look to gray hair for leadership. When times are good/frothy, people look for youth. Evan Spiegel and Jack Dorsey are incredibly talented young men who have built companies that are likely worth hundreds of millions, maybe even a billion dollars, but not tens of billions. Snap, WeWork, Uber, Twitter  —  combined, worth more than Boeing  —  are run by talented young men who in their next lives will be vice presidents (optimistic) and really grateful. As a former twenty something CEO of new-economy firms, I can tell you that the greatest asset of a child CEO is being too stupid to know you're going to fail. Young CEOs pursue avenues that are crazy and that sometimes end up being crazy-genius. But most are just too inexperienced to be running companies that hundreds or thousands of families depend on for their livelihood.

If the tech boom continues its run, there's a non-zero probability that a teenager will be the founder/CEO of a $1 billion-value tech firm in the next decade. When that happens, we really will be on the precipice of the economic zombie apocalypse. If he or she wears a black turtleneck, treats employees like crap, and sports tattoos, a nose ring, or other accouterments of youth, society will treat them like Jesus Christ. We now worship at the altar of innovation and youth, versus character or kindness.

The Instant Pot deals we expect to see again during Amazon Prime Day 2019

Instant Pot

Last year on Prime Day, people bought a whopping 300,000 Instant Pots, the actual Swiss army knife of kitchens across the country. The total volume of orders from the 36-hour event broke Instant Pot's previous sale records. Back in 2017, it also broke the list of Amazon's top five best sellers on Prime Day.

If you're only going to buy one kitchen appliance, or you can only bring one hypothetical tool to a kitchen on a desert island, it would be difficult to find one more useful than this.

Amazon hasn't released the official date for Prime Day 2019 (although we have our guesses), but if its track record is any indication, the Instant Pot will be deeply discounted again.

Here are the Instant Pot Prime Day 2019 deals we expect to see again this year:

To avoid losing out in the haze of Prime Day, you may want to add it to your wish list now. Though if you can't wait until mid-July, you can also get it on sale right now for up to 30% off, though not quite as low as it was on Prime Day 2018.

Why buy an Instant Pot?

TheInstant Pot can do more things — and make more food — than you would believe possible in a comically small amount of space. Depending on the model you get, you can feed families of six or more in one fell swoop, and it can replace 10 common kitchen appliances with one: It's a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker, yogurt maker, cake maker, egg cooker, sauté pan, steamer, warmer, and sterilizer.

The real beauty of theInstant Pot, aside from its efficiency, is its total convenience. It removes barriers both to cooking at home and eating healthy foods. Instead of babying dry black beans with an overnight soak and four hours of patient simmering, you can toss them into the Pot and pressure cook them for 30 minutes while you catch up on a Netflix show.

It's popular with our readers, but also with our team. Our tech guy has sworn by it as well as an Insider Picks editor, and it topped our list of the best instant cookers. It also has over 30,000 five-star Amazon reviews. If you're looking for a new do-anything kitchen gadget, prioritize this one.

Current Instant Pot prices

Instant Pot 3-Quart, $59.95 (originally $79.95)

Instant Pot 6-Quart, $69.99 (originally $99.95)

Instant Pot 8-Quart, $99.99 (originally $139.95)

Adidas Nite Jogger

  • Adidas launched a new sneaker designed for nighttime runners, aptly named the Nite Jogger.
  • Inspired by a sneaker of the same name from 1979, today's version features a full-length Boost midsole, a cut-and-sewn upper, and plenty of reflective accents for nighttime visibility.
  • Priced at $130-$140, the Adidas Nite Jogger is one of the most affordable Boost sneakers.

Running is often regarded as a sport with endless bounds. Requiring nothing more than the clothes on your back, the shoes on your feet, and the path in front of you, it can provide an exhilarating sense of freedom. But for some, that freedom can be stripped away after sunset. City runners tend to reserve their strides for daylight for fear of not being seen.

Visibility has always been a major concern for urban runners, so Adidas just launched a shoe to help solve their problem.

Separated from the original 1979 Nite Jogger by 40 years of innovation, this year's Nite Jogger model is completely redesigned. It features a full-length Boost midsole, OrthoLite sock liners, and a mesh ripstop nylon, plus a combination of reflective accents for nighttime visibility.

Adidas Nite Jogger

While I'm personally not a devout night-time runner, Adidas releasing an all-new Boost silhouette for $130 was reason enough for me to show interest in them. Having worn a handful of more expensive Boost sneakers including Ultra Boosts, Ultra Boost 19s, NMDs, and Yeezys, I decided to see how the affordably-priced Nite Jogger stacked up — and how it performed at night.

First impressions

The first thing that caught my attention was how great the overall style of the sneaker is. I'm constantly impressed with how Adidas can create all-new sneakers that are fit for modern times, but still pay homage to the brand's heritage. In contrast to most modern sneakers that use fused synthetic uppers and modern manufacturing techniques, the Nite Jogger has a cut-and-sewn upper that's reminiscent of 1979 version and other silhouettes from that era.

While reflective accents have long been used on footwear, the Nite Jogger manages to use a lot of it without looking tacky. The signature Three Stripes, heels, lateral side of the toe box, and laces all shine brightly at night.

What they're like to wear

I've yet to come across a Boost sneaker that was uncomfortable and the Nite Jogger is no exception. However, the bottom is rather flat — similar to the NMD.  I wouldn't say the Nite Jogger is as performance-based as the Ultra Boost, but at $50 less, it's also understandable. I still found them to be exceptionally comfortable and perfectly suitable for walking long distances, casual runs, and other activities that require you to be on your feet a lot.

Although they're not specifically intended for strength training, I also found the flat bottoms to be a pretty sturdy platform for weightlifting. When I wear my Ultra Boosts in the gym, I sometimes feel myself balancing to compensate for the arched shape of the sole. They're an all-around good sneaker for training, but if you're specifically looking for speed and higher energy return when running, definitely go for the more expensive Ultra Boost

I terms of fit, I strongly recommend going with your true size. Adidas didn't have my true size available, so they sent me a half size larger and they're noticeably bigger than other Boost sneakers I've consistently gone up a half size in. If I were to buy another pair, I'll definitely go with my true size. My girlfriend, who has also worn a handful of Boost sneakers, went with her true size and was happy with the fit.

The bottom line

For no more than $140 a pair, there really isn't anything to complain about with the Adidas Nite Jogger. It's lightweight, comfortable, and has a retro-inspired look that's still fresh and modern. Athletes who thrive at night, general comfort seekers, and people into sneakers strictly for style will all find great utility in the Nite Jogger.

While it's not the very best performance runner from Adidas, it's definitely one of the best looking, commanding attention whether it's day or night.
