  • TSA airport body scanner may be more likely to produce false alarms against certain members of society.
  • According to a report published by ProPublica this week, the TSA's advanced imaging technology (AIT) body scanners are more likely to triggers false alarms for African American passengers.

The US Transportation Security Administration's airport scanner may be more likely to produce false alarms against certain members of society. According to a report published by ProPublica this week, the TSA's advanced imaging technology (AIT) body scanners are more likely to triggers false alarms for African American passengers.

More specifically, the report, by Brenda Medina and Thomas Frank, indicates that certain hairstyles common with members of the African American community such as afros, braids, and dreadlocks, tend to set off false alarms.

tsaUnfortunately, this results in "hair pat downs" that require screeners to run their fingers through passengers' hair. It's a procedure the story called invasive and degrading.

TSA officials were not immediately available for comment on the matter.

The story cites a 2014 report by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) that indicates the scanners also "had a higher false alarm rate when passengers wore turbans and wigs."

Furthermore, the GAO report found that it isn't just headgear and hairstyles that increases the rate of false alarms, a passenger's body fat content will also affect the rate of false alarms.

TSA Body Scanner"The false alarm rate for passengers with a normal Body Mass Index was less than the false alarm rates for overweight and obese passengers," The GAO report said.

According to the GAO report, the TSA did not include the rate of false alarms as a key performance requirement when it evaluated which scanning system to deploy. However, the agency did admit in the report that "systems' current false alarm rate could produce an increase in annual staffing costs in the field."

How to bake a sweet potato 3 ways — and the tools you need to do it

Sweet Potato

  • Sweet potatoes are rich in nutrients, low in fat, and versatile enough for use in many meals across many cuisines.
  • Unlike potatoes and yams, most types of sweet potato can actually be eaten raw without danger to your health, but they only offer nutrition when properly cooked.
  • Here's how to bake a sweet potato three different ways and the tools you need to do it, including a baking sheet, an air fryer, and a microwave.

Sweet potatoes are delicious cut into fries, mashed, chopped and tossed with herbs, made into pies, mixed into muffins, and so much more. They are affordable, easy to find, and pretty easy to handle, too.

Just skin 'em or wash 'em, slice em or pierce 'em, and cook 'em up. We'll get to that in a moment, but first, what is a sweet potato, anyway?

According to the Dictionary, it's a:

noun

a plant, Ipomoea batatas, of the morning glory family, grown for its sweet, edible, tuberous root

But that's not much help, practically speaking.

The sweet potato is a surprisingly distant "relative" to the regular old potato. While they share an order, Solanales, they differ in species, genus, and family, though both share origins in South and Central America.

The sweet potato and regular potato also differ in nutritional value. Sweet potatoes have almost triple the calcium as most regular potato varietals, and are loaded with vitamin A and beta-carotene. And they're not yams! Those are native to Africa, and tend to be much drier and starchier than a sweet potato.

All that said, they cook in much the same way as a regular potato, albeit usually cooking faster than a standard Russet. So if you're already familiar with baking potatoes, then learning how to cook a sweet potato won't take you long at all.

Read on in the slides below to learn how to bake a sweet potato.

How to bake a sweet potato in the oven

You can eat an oven-baked sweet potato just like a regular baked potato, leaving the skin on while cooking it, then slicing it open and eating the flesh once it's cooked, ideally with all sorts of awesome toppings. It'll be perfect with just butter, salt, and pepper, really.

All you need is a baking sheet, a fork, and a conventional oven.

  1. Preheat your oven to 400º Fahrenheit.
  2. Rinse and scrub the exterior of the sweet potato, coat lightly with olive oil (or a vegetable oil), and then pierce the skin in four or five places with the tines of a fork or in eight or nine places with the tip of a knife.
  3. Bake on a metal baking sheet for 45 minutes (40 for smaller sweet potatoes, 50 for larger).
  4. Remove, carefully slice open, and serve.

Pretty easy, right? But not too efficient, time wise. So let's try it another way.

How to bake a sweet potato in an air fryer

For this preparation, you will, of course, need an air fryer. I use (and love) the Bella 2.6 Quart Air Convection Fryer, which, like all air fryers, is actually a compact, powerful convection oven — there's no actual frying involved.

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 395º to 400º Fahrenheit.
  2. Wash and scrub the sweet potato, coat with olive oil, then pierce the skin in several places with the tines of a fork or with a sharp knife.
  3. Place in the air fryer basket and cook for 35 minutes.
  4. Remove from fryer, slice, and enjoy.

So that shaved off a solid ten minutes. Not bad, but we can do better.

Buy a Bella 2.6 Quart Air Convection Fryer on Amazon for $49.99 to $68.99 (originally $79.99)

How to cook a sweet potato in the microwave

When you type the word "microwave" into Google's search bar, "sweet potato" comes up in the top five hits. Which should be a good indication that yes, you can absolutely cook a sweet potato in a microwave.

While it won't have quite the same consistency as a baked sweet potato, softening a bit around the outside and with the skin slightly damp, the finished foodstuff is still quite good and ready oh so fast.

  1. Rinse and scrub the sweet potato, coat it with oil, and pierce the skin in several places with a fork or a sharp knife.
  2. Cook the sweet potato on high for three minutes, then rotate and turn it, and cook for three more minutes.
  3. Remove and slice open. If not fully cooked, keep at it in half-minute increments. But chances are, it's ready to be enjoyed.

Just be careful with all three cooking methods, as these tubers come out of the oven, air fryer, or microwave super hot.

Mueller's report carved the overarching theme of Trump's wild presidency into stone

0

Donald Trump

  • For months, a string of media reports have painted a picture of the overarching theme of Donald Trump's presidency: his staff keeps saving him from his most rash — and at times, seemingly illegal — impulses.
  • Trumpworld vigorously denies the accounts and suggests they're part of the mainstream media's attempt to discredit Trump.
  • But this week, the special counsel Robert Mueller codified the theme of Trump's presidency in his final report in the Russia probe, which found that Trump was largely unsuccessful at obstructing justice mainly because his aides refused to carry out his orders.
  • It's unclear how much longer this strategy will help shield the president. House Democrats subpoenaed the full, un-redacted Mueller report, while other, more progressive congressional Democrats say it's time to launch impeachment proceedings.

Last year, an anonymous White House official sent shockwaves through Washington when they published an op-ed in The New York Times titled, "I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration."

"I work for the president but like-minded colleagues and I have vowed to thwart parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations," this person wrote. "We believe our first duty is to this country, and the president continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic."

A few weeks later, the veteran journalist and Washington Post editor Bob Woodward revealed in his latest book that Gary Cohn, then Trump's chief economic adviser, stole papers off President Donald Trump's desk to prevent him from pulling the US out of two major trade deals and precipitating an economic disaster.

More recently, people who work at Immigration and Customs Enforcement rejected the president's proposal to bus migrants to sanctuary cities, citing legal constraints. Former Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and then Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan refused to ban migrants seeking asylum from entering the US because they said it was illegal to do so.

Unsurprisingly, the president and his loyalists have spent the last several months vigorously denying all of these reported accounts and suggest they're part of the mainstream media's attempt to discredit Trump.

But each revelation appears to paint a picture of the overarching theme of this presidency: Trump's staff keeps saving him from his most rash — and at times, downright illegal — impulses.

This week, the special counsel Robert Mueller codified that in his highly anticipated final report in the Russia probe, which the Justice Department released on Thursday with some redactions.

robert mueller

Mueller spearheaded the FBI's investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 US election, whether members of the Trump campaign conspired with Russia to tilt the race in his favor, and whether Trump sought to obstruct justice in the inquiry after learning of its existence in 2017.

Trump's legal team was most worried about Mueller's findings in the obstruction thread, current and former White House officials familiar with the matter told INSIDER.

Those fears may not be entirely unfounded. Ultimately, Mueller found that Trump's "efforts to influence the investigation were mostly unsuccessful, but that is largely because the persons who surrounded the President declined to carry out orders or accede to his requests."

Read more:Mueller revealed why he didn't charge Trump with obstruction, and it directly contradicts what Barr told the public

It's unclear how long this strategy will help shield the president.

Mueller declined to make a "traditional prosecutorial judgment" in the obstruction case, and cited several reasons why:

  • A 1973 decision by the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel said a sitting president cannot be indicted.
  • If Mueller didn't bring an obstruction charge but suggested Trump was guilty of obstruction in his report, it would not be fair because Trump would not have an opportunity to clear himself, as he would if the case went to trial.
  • Issuing a sealed indictment was risky because it could have leaked and impeded Trump's ability to govern effectively.

But the special counsel laid out an extensive roadmap of all the evidence he'd collected in the obstruction case and implied it was now up to Congress to investigate further.

Democratic lawmakers are doing just that.

FILE PHOTO: House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) listens as Acting U.S. Attorney General Matthew Whitaker testifies before a House Judiciary Committee hearing on oversight of the Justice Department on Capitol Hill in Washington, U.S., Feb. 8, 2019. On Friday, the House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed an un-redacted version of the Mueller report, as well as the underlying evidence. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer signaled their full support for the move.

House Judiciary chairman Jerry Nadler also plans to call Mueller to testify before the panel in the next few weeks. Attorney General William Barr, who is being accused of misleading the public about the special counsel's findings, is slated to appear before Congress early next month.

Other congressional Democrats are calling for more drastic action.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said she would sign onto an impeachment resolution that was introduced earlier by Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib.

And on Friday, Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren became the first Democratic senator to call for Trump's impeachment.

best avocado beauty products

  • Avocado benefits your skin like it does your body, thanks to those moisturizing healthy fats and vitamins.
  • We've rounded up the best avocado beauty products you can use for a variety of purposes.
  • Kiehl's Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado is our top pick because it uses avocado to soothe and hydrate the skin around the eyes.

Avocado is great on everything — toast, nachos, omelets, your face. Yep, you read that last part correctly. The superfood has quietly become a staple ingredient in beauty products over the years. Primarily known for its moisturizing properties, avocado is a great addition to everything from concealer to face masks to lipsticks.

If you have dry skin, you can probably benefit from a little avocado in your skin-care or even your makeup routine. Not prepared to literally mash raw avocado onto your skin for a DIY facial treatment? There are plenty of subtler ways to incorporate the powerhouse ingredient into your routine.

There's an avocado oil-infused product in just about every beauty category these days. Here, I've rounded up the five most talked about, highly-rated items that include some form of avocado in the ingredients' list.

Here are the best avocado beauty products of 2019:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best avocado beauty product overall

Why you’ll love it: The Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado is one of the most popular eye creams on the market, fusing a symphony of hydrating ingredients together in one tiny jar.

Even eye cream skeptics will flip for Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado. A powerful trio of avocado oil, shea butter, and and cocoa butter unite to form a thick, delicious moisturizer that keeps the eye area in top condition.

The cream has a very thick, rich texture and most reviewers note that a little goes a long way. To apply, gently tap the product around the orbital bone until it blends in — no rubbing! Eye skin is delicate and prone to wrinkling, so handle with care. Luckily, the ultra-hydrating formula of this cream will minimize the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment with Avocado is a popular pick. Sephora shoppers give it a 4.2 rating based on 738 reviews and it’s been featured by YouBeauty, Bustle, The Fashion Spot, Refinery29, PopSugar, Glamour, and more.

“My dry skin has gotten so out of hand this year and I thought to finally buy my first eye cream and I’m glad it was this one. It focuses on dryness (which it does a fantastic job at moisturizing) but I’ve noticed the dark circles under my eyes lightening up when I use this product,” writes one Sephora shopper.

Pros: Super hydrating, little goes a long way, ophthalmologist and dermatologist tested

Cons: jar packaging, no specific anti-aging ingredients

The best overnight mask with avocado

Why you'll love it: Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask uses avocado and Swiss glacier water to quench thirsty skin while you sleep.

I love an overnight mask, and Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Hydrating Mask is one of my most recent faves. It's like an ultra-intense moisturizer — great for days when your skin is feeling dry and cracked.

The texture is thick and creamy, but it blends in quickly for a non-greasy, minimally shiny finish. You could even use it during the daytime when you need some extra hydration. It claims to work for up to 72 hours, and while I can't attest to that because I wash my face about eight times in the space of 72 hours, I can say the plumping and hydrating effects are near instant and long-lasting.

This mask uses avocado, Swiss glacier water, and hyaluronic acid to soothe and nourish parched skin. It has a 4.6 Sephora rating based on 1,306 reviews and has been mentioned by The Fashion Spot, Influenster, and Glamour.

"Use this every night. The smell is amazing and a little goes a long way. I got the travel size and it lasted soooooo long. Nothing hydrates my skin like this does. Absolutely in love. My skin type is very dry and sensitive," writes one Sephora shopper.

Pros: Hydrating, can be used overnight, non-shiny, free of sulfates, SLS, and parabens

Cons: Pricey

Buy the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask on Sephora for $26

The best avocado-based concealer

Why you'll love it: The First Aid Beauty Hello FAB Bendy Avocado Concealer uses avocado to achieve a lightweight, natural finish with medium coverage.

My favorite concealers are hydrating and natural-looking, while still providing enough coverage to be worthwhile, and the First Aid Beauty Hello FAB Bendy Avocado Concealer sounds like the perfect blend off all three.

It claims to provide full-coverage, though most reviewers note it's more like light-to-medium, and boasts a "natural, luminous finish." The product contains several good-for-your-skin ingredients such as hydrating avocado oil, vitamin E, and mushroom extract. The addition of caffeine helps de-puff and further diminish dark circles.

The product boasts a 4.3-star rating at Sephora based on 224 reviews and has been raved about by several popular YouTubers, include Jamie Paige and Samantha Ravndahl.

"An awesome product for day to day use. Literally blends into the skin, has a natural finish and doesn't settle into fine lines. It stands true to its claim!" writes one Sephora shopper.

"Really nice product for my 56 year old skin. Doesn't crease at all. Love it! Using under eyes and even on other areas of my face. I always feel like when I use FAB make up its good for my skin," says another.

Pros: Hydrating formula, no parabens, sulfates, or phthalates, vegan and cruelty-free

Cons: Limited shade range

casper lab mattress company san francisco 29

  • The online mattress company Casper has expanded its sleep-centric product line to include everything from bedside lights to duvets to multiple types of mattresses.
  • More products, however, mean a lot more product testing is needed — especially for a company that's as much a high-tech startup as it is a mattress company.
  • Recently, Business Insider was invited for a tour of Casper's San Francisco testing lab. Read on for a look inside the lab.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

The online mattress company Casper made waves when it launched in 2014 — mostly for the completely new buying experience it offered.

Instead of having to visit a mattress store in-person and negotiate with aggressive salespeople, those in the market for a new bed could simply order one on Casper's website and have it shipped (in a compact cardboard box) right to their front doorsteps.

However, as Casper's co-founder and Chief Product Officer Jeff Chapin told Business Insider in a recent interview, the mattress world caught on quickly to the experience the startup was offering, and many copied its playbook.

"Now there's like 50 companies that sell one mattress online," Chapin said. "The landscape changed. We have to adapt to that and find a new value proposition. We think it's about getting people better sleep."

A focus on better sleep has broadened the possibilities for Casper, beyond selling the one, standard mattress it offered when it first launched. Today, Casper's sleep-centric product line runs the gamut from bedside lights to duvets to multiple mattresses for an array of preferences.

"It's all about — how do you meet the needs of more people?" Chapin said. "We do think there's this big unmet need around sleep, it's just finding what's our unique take on everything."

Read more: I slept on Casper's new adjustable bed frame with a built-in massage function — here's what it was like

Casper's ability to expand its product offering beyond mattresses will become increasingly important as the company prepares to go public, which it announced in March it had begun preparing for. To date, Casper has raised over $330 million and was most recently valued at $1.1 billion

More products also mean a lot more product testing — especially for a company that's as much a high-tech startup as it is a mattress company. Chapin told us that for every product that eventually makes it to market, many don't, but that the tinkering and experimenting in its lab is "all about figuring out what is a sleep company and what isn't."

The Casper lab is located in San Francisco's Mission District.

At the labs, there are firmware engineers, electrical engineers, design researchers, and more who are thinking up Casper's next generation of products.

Casper outsources some of its ergonomics testing, but most of its prototyping and testing takes place in-house, right in the heart of San Francisco.

The company's business headquarters is in New York City.

How to find your ring size with a tape measure or ring sizer

KUUQA Iron Ring Sizer

  • Finding your proper ring size is important for both the comfort of your fingers as well as for ensuring your prized piece of jewelry doesn't slip off.
  • Once you know your accurate ring size (or that of the intended wearer), you can not only have a new ring custom made, but you can have existing rings resized.
  • Here's how to quickly, easily, and accurately find your ring size with a measuring tape, a ring sizer, or the help of a jeweler.

When I bought my wife her engagement ring 15 years ago, it was the first piece of truly expensive jewelry I had ever bought. Being a college-aged man at the time, I did the logical thing and simply guessed at her ring size. As it happened, I was pretty accurate. (That or she had it resized and thoughtfully didn't tell me.) But now that I've grown a bit wise, I can give you a piece of advice: Don't guess at ring size.

A ring that's too large might slip off a finger, especially when its wearer's hands are cold, wet, or both. A ring that's too tight is a pain to get on and off and can be uncomfortable at all times when worn, as well, constricting proper blood flow and movement of the poor bejeweled digit.

The good news? It's easy to find your ring size. Here are three ways to do it that, if done right, are sure to work. Quick pro tip: Measure at the end of the day because your finger will be at its most swollen then. Also, if you have large knuckles, you might need to take those into account and measure at the joint.

Here are the tools you need to help you find your ring size:

Learn how to find your ring size and the tools you need to do it in the slides below:

How to find your ring size with a tape measure, ruler, and string

If you have a piece of inelastic string, ideally dental floss, a ruler or measuring tape, and a pen, you can get your ring size. Better yet, have someone else help you for an even easier process.

  1. Wrap the string around the base of the finger in question.
  2. Mark the spot where the tip of the string reaches the rest of the loop.
  3. Measure the demarcated length of string in millimeters.

Then follow this chart to determine your ring size based on the millimeter measurement:

  • 44.1 mm = Ring size 3
  • 45.4 = 3.5
  • 46.7 = 4
  • 48 = 4.5
  • 49.2 = 5
  • 50.5 = 5.5
  • 51.8 = 6
  • 53.1 = 6.5
  • 54.3 = 7
  • 55.6 = 7.5
  • 56.9 = 8
  • 58.3 = 8.5
  • 59.4 = 9
  • 60.7 = 9.5
  • 62 = 10
  • 63.3 = 10.5
  • 64.5 = 11
  • 65.8 = 11.5
  • 67.1 =12
  • 68.3 = 12.5
  • 69.6 = 13

How to find ring size with a ring sizing tool

If you regularly measure fingers for ring size or you really don't trust your own accuracy when it comes to the string and measuring tap method, there are dedicated tools you can use to measure your ring size.

The first, and the easiest tool to use, is simply a collection of 27 stainless steel rings, each of which has its size marked on the link. The rings are connected to a wire loop so they stay together. Once you figure out which ring fits you the best, you have your size.

Another option is to get a ring-sizing tool called a mandrel. A mandrel is a long dowel with an increasing girth and ring sizes marked along its expanding length. Just take whichever ring you already own that's the most comfortable and slide it onto the tool to find your size. You'll know the size by the marking on the mandrel where it stops.

Buy the KUUQA Ring Sizer on Amazon for $6.89 (originally $9.99)

Buy the Rosenthal Ring Collection Ring Sizer Mandrel on Amazon for $6.70

How to find your ring size with a professional jeweler

Any jeweler worth his or her wacky jewelry appraising monocle thing will help you find your ring size for free, though of course they'll be hoping you buy something. So if you've got the time and you want to be sure it's right, just turn to the experts.

The best leave-in treatments for curly hair

Insider Pickswrites about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

best leave in treatments for curly hair

  • Conditioners, mists, gels, and creams are just a few of the options for leave-in treatments that are suitable for use on curly hair.
  • The best ones hydrate and revitalize strands while cutting down on frizz.
  • Our top pick is Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls, a multi-use product that detangles and styles all different types of curls.

A lifetime spent with curly hair has taught me a few things. Mostly, that I'm too lazy to do much with my hair after a shower. But I've also learned that a little effort and the right products make me 10 times happier with my style.

In my opinion, getting a good haircut is the single most important thing you can do. I go to Devachan in New York City's SoHo neighborhood, but there are many curl specialists located throughout the United States. Once you have your ideal cut, you can focus on using the right styling products and treatments to enhance your curls.

I never use heat on my hair, so I'm always looking for gels, creams, and serums that will cut down on frizz and add definition to my curls on their own. But there are countless leave-in treatments for curly hair that will help you get your desired effect, whether you air dry or not. I've researched the most beloved curly hair products on the market for this list of favorites you're guaranteed to love.

Here are the best leave-in treatments for curly hair in 2019:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best leave-in treatment for curly hair overall

Why you'll love it: Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls is a do-it-all styling lotion that softens and defines curls without weighing them down.

Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls is one of those amorphous hair products that seems to do everything (besides cleanse) all at once. Described as "a super soft styling lotion," the product combats frizz, defines ringlets, and prevents the "ramen noodle" effect some products have on curls.

Per the brand's instructions, Pillow Soft Curls should be applied to damp, clean, detangled hair before styling. Afterwards you can air dry or diffuse curls. The product itself is quick-drying and promises not to leave a detectable film or make your hair crunchy and stiff. You can also use Pillow Soft Curls to refresh your strands between washes.

With a 4-star Amazon rating based on 1,100+ shopper reviews and mentions in InStyle, Total Beauty, Self, and BuzzFeed, this is a tried-and-true favorite.

"I have been a hairdresser for 31 years, this is, by far the BEST PRODUCT I've ever used," writes one shopper. Keep in mind that a little of this will go a long way. This is also a fantastic option for replenishing color or heat damaged hair.

Pros: Free of sulfates, mineral oil, petroleum, and paraffins, vegan and cruelty-free, multiuse

Cons: Pricey

Buy Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls at Walmart for $18.22 (originally $21.97)

The best gel for curly hair

Why you'll love it: Get hold minus the crunch with the DevaCurl Light Defining Gel, a flexible, nourishing styling product.

Gels used to remind me of the tight, hard styles I wore for dance recitals growing up. Armed with AquaNet hairspray and globs of gel, my mom would mold my fly-aways into submission. And so I was initially hesitant when a stylist handed me a bottle of DevaCurl Light Defining Gel after my first cut at the brand's salon in New York City.

I decided to give it a try the next time I washed my hair, and I was impressed. This product defines my ringlets and locks without drying my hair out. I apply a nickel-sized amount to sopping wet hair and scrunch toward my scalp, following up with a microfiber towel to absorb excess moisture.

Light Defining Gel comes in two sizes, 12 ounces or 32 ounces. The smaller bottle has lasted me a long time, because I only use a tiny amount. If you have longer or thicker hair, you may want to grab the larger size.

"This has been my holy grail styler. My 2B/3C waves and curls respond so nicely to it — no hard, heavy cast — just light, bouncy curls. Cut my morning routine in half, as it also allowed my low-porosity hair to dry super quickly," writes one Ulta reviewer.

The product has a 4.3-star rating on the site, based on 406 reviews, and has been featured in Glamour and BuzzFeed.

Pros: Lightweight gel, doesn't crunch, a little goes a long way

Cons: Pricey

Why you'll love it: Kristin Ess Weightless Shine Air Dry Creme is the only product you need for a quick and easy wash-and-go style.

I love when my hair looks good but I don't love actually doing my hair. If I could roll out of the shower and have my strands dry perfectly on their own, I'd be forever happy. Ever since I discovered the Kristin Ess Weightless Shine Air Dry Creme, which I've written about here before, I've gotten a tiny step closer to that goal.

I've loved every Kristin Ess productI've tried so far — other faves include The One Signature Hair Water and Frizz Management Cleansing Conditioner but this one really stands out. I apply this silky, floral-scented creme when my hair is still damp but not soaking.

It eliminates frizz, defines my curls, and keeps them looking better for longer in between washes. Target shoppers seem to agree: The Air Dry Creme has 4 stars at the retailer, based on 53 reviews.

One customer writes, "My wavy/curly/frizzy hair loves this stuff. I've been looking for a product to give me wash and go hair that tames frizz and this is it! It has just enough weight to tame my hair but not enough to make my hair greasy or flat. I've found that not touching your hair too much after putting in this product is also super important."

Pros: Cuts down on frizz, paraben-free, aluminum-free

Cons: Has a strong scent

Michael Phelps reveals the simple things parents can do to help their kids learn to swim like fearless champs

michael phelps how to swim

  • Michael Phelps is the most decorated Olympian of all time with 28 Olympic medals, 23 of them gold.
  • The accomplished swimmer is teaching his two youngsters how to swim — he said his eldest, 2-year-old Boomer, has "got a nice little stroke going," and can swim butterfly and freestyle.
  • For Phelps, the most critical primary swimming lesson for kids is to make sure they are comfortable in the water, especially when they first submerge their heads.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

When Olympian Michael Phelps was a little boy, he only swam on his back.

Phelps, the 33-year-old retired Team USA swimmer, has more Olympic medals to his name than anyone on the planet. But he said that as a tot, he didn't love to splash around.

"I was a kid who started on my back because I didn't like to get my face wet," Phelps told Business Insider.

With his own two young boys, Boomer and Beckett, Phelps said he wants things to be different. So he started getting them into the pool when they were just 3 to 4 months old.

"The biggest challenge is really just trying to make sure that they're as comfortable as possible in the water," he said. "And every kid is going to learn that in a different way."

Pool safety is crucial

Pools can be dangerous places for tots: Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death in children from 1 to 4 years old.

"Many of these deaths occur when children are not expected to be swimming or when they have unanticipated access to water," ER doctor Sarah Denny, who co-authored a new report on preventing drowning, said in a release"Toddlers are naturally curious; that's why we must implement other strategies, such as pool fencing and door locks."

Phelps said his pool is fenced off, and his kids know to stay away from the drains and never swim without a parent alongside.

There's no evidence that teaching kids to swim before they're 1 year old, as Phelps did, has any impact on a child's drowning risk.

But if your kids can enjoy being in the water before their first birthday, water play classes might "help your infant get used to being in the pool," the American Academy of Pediatrics says.

That's exactly what Phelps was hoping for with his boys, who are now 1 and 2.

Kids should learn to tolerate a wet face

"I think the initial shock of going under water, that's probably the scariest point," Phelps said. "Just trying to stay comfortable when your face does submerge."

To prepare his kids for the shock of a wet face, Phelps said he started blowing air into the babies' faces early (which instinctively helps infants hold their breath, a phenomenon called the 'bradycardic response'). He also would often "dunk them" into the water to get them used to that feeling he used to hate.

The strategy has paid off.

"They both love jumping off the edge," he said. "They have zero fear in the water."

Phelps said he and his wife Nicole are still getting their youngest, Beckett, used to enjoying the water in new ways.

"Beckett just kind of splashes around, plays with toys, and he'll sit in a little float that we have and kind of just splash around," Phelps said.

There's no rule about the right age for swim lessons

Pediatricians emphasize that you don't have to teach your child to swim as early as Phelps has. Every child is a little different, and there's no use in pushing a baby into the waves.

But by age four, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says "most children are ready for swim lessons," including basic water safety skills like learning how to float, tread water, and get in an out of a pool on their own. If your child hasn't started learning swimming basics by age 5 or 6, the AAP notes, "now is the time!"

michael phelps teaching boomer to swim

Phelps, who boasts an impressive 6-foot-7-inch butterfly wingspan in the water, said he already sees a budding swimmer in his older son, Boomer, who will turn 3 in May. Phelps said "he's got everything down" and swims freestyle and butterfly.

"He's got a nice little stroke going," Phelps said.

Those are the words of an adoring parent, of course, but the analysis also comes from the world-record holder in the 100-meter and 200-meter butterfly events.

The Phelps family recently announced that a third swimmer baby is on the way later this year.

"Three kids under four will be ... that'll be a handful," Phelps said.

Yet again, he plans to get his new baby's face wet in the pool just months after he or she emerges from the womb.

There's a simple rule to determine whether investing while paying off student loan debt is a smart move, according to the experts

commencement graduation student

Student loan debt is at an all-time high — the national total student debt is over $1.5 trillion and the average student loan debt per graduating student in 2018 who took out loans is $29,800, according to Student Loan Hero.

The weight of student loan debt has made it harder for millennials to save money to the point where some are playing catch-up — but the first rule of building wealth is that the earlier you start saving the better, thanks to compound interest.

So should millennials still invest while they have student loan debt — or should they pay it off first? It depends.

A 6% annual return on an investment portfolio serves as a benchmark, says one expert

If the interest rate for your student loan debt is high, experts say you should pay it off before investing, wrote Erin Lowry, founder of BrokeMillennial.com in her book, "Broke Millennial Takes on Investing: A Beginner's Guide to Leveling Up Your Money."

While there isn't a specific interest rate the industry agrees on, Sallie Krawcheck, CEO of Ellevest, told Lowry there's a good guidepost to follow — a well-diversified investment portfolio should return about 6% annually, she said. Based on that, any student loan debt with interest higher than 7% should be paid off first, she said.

How much could your savings grow? Find out with this calculator from our partners:

Alex Benke, vice president of Financial Advice and Planning For Betterment, told Lowry that Betterment uses a 5% interest rate as the cut-off for student loan debt. You should have an emergency fund and no high-interest debt before starting to invest, he said.

But if your student loan debt has a low interest rate of less than 5% or 4%, it might be worthwhile to invest while paying it off, Julie Vitra, senior financial advisor with Vanguard Personal Advisor Services, told Lowry. "If you expect your portfolio to earn 6% to 8%, and your student loan debt is at 3%, 4%, or 5%, maybe, you're better off investing your dollars," Vitra said.

Consider the economic climate and company-match programs

Whether you invest while paying off student loan debt also depends on the climate in which you're investing, according to Vitra.

"After the Great Recession, the stock market experienced a bull run from 2009 through 2018, but analysts and experts have been anticipating a market correction and less aggressive returns in the coming years," Lowry wrote. "No one has a crystal ball, of course, but always do your research about recent returns before deciding to invest while paying off debt."

All experts Lowry talked to said that regardless of your student loan debt interest rate, you should invest in an employer-matched retirement account— like a 401(k) — if the option is available.

A company match means your company will match whatever contribution you put towards your 401(k) up to a certain amount.

For example, say your annual salary is $100,000 and your company offers a "one-to-one" match up to 5% — if you contribute 5% of your salary ($5,000), your company will match it by contributing $5,000, making your actual investment $10,000 a year.

Essentially, it's free money. Just keep in mind that the 401(k) contribution limit for 2019 is $19,000, according to the IRA.

How to mute keywords and phrases on Twitter (and avoid spoilers)

twitter

  • As the final "Game of Thrones" season airs, and we approach the premiere of "Avengers: Endgame," there's more danger than ever of inadvertently running into spoilers on Twitter.
  • Luckily, there's a way to avoid seeing tweets about these topics, without having to go on a total social media hiatus.
  • You can mute specific keywords or phrases on Twitter, which stops tweets containing those words from appearing on your timeline or in your notifications.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

So many awesome movies and TV shows have premiered recently — "Game of Thrones," "Avengers," "Us" — and with everybody and their dog wanting to talk all about them, it's become harder than ever to avoid spoilers.

Sometimes, it seems like all you can do is shun Twitter altogether, until you get the chance to watch what everyone's chatting about.

Luckily, Twitter gives us a solution: muting.

On Twitter, you can choose specific keywords and phrases that you don't want to see in a tweet. Say, for instance, you're worried about being spoiled on "Game of Thrones" — just hop into your settings, mute a few phrases like "Game of Thrones," "#GameOfThrones," or even names like "Daenerys," and "Bran."

In the blink of an eye, any tweet containing those words will disappear from your timeline and notifications. You can still access the tweets if someone gives you the direct link, but they won't show up otherwise.

Ready to block some spoilers? Here's how to mute keywords and phrases on both desktop and the Twitter mobile app.

How to mute keywords on Twitter via desktop

1. While logged into Twitter, click your icon in the top right corner to open a menu. It should be in between the search bar and the "Tweet" button.

Screen Shot 2019 04 16 at 10_18_59_AM

2. In this menu, click "Settings and privacy."

Screen Shot 2019 04 16 at 10.19.20 AM

3. This will bring you to your account settings page. In the list on the left side of the page, click "Muted words."

Screen Shot 2019 04 16 at 10.20.31 AM

4. The first time you open this page, a small pop-up will appear explaining that "When you mute words, you won't see them in your notifications or timeline."  You can click the "Learn more" link to read more about muting, or click "Got It" to start muting keywords on your own.

5. Click "Add."

Screen Shot 2019 04 16 at 10.21.45 AM

6. In the menu that pops up, type the words or phrases you want to mute in the text box offered. You'll also be asked to choose where you want the words to be muted, and for how long. By default, Twitter sets it so you'll never see tweets containing the words on your timeline, and you'll never receive notifications containing the words from people you don't follow.

Screen Shot 2019 04 16 at 10.22.12 AM

7. Once you've typed in the phrase you want to mute, click "Add," and it will be immediately muted. Repeat this process for every word or phrase you'd like to mute. You'll see a list on the page of all the words you've muted — click the pencil icon to edit them, or the red speaker with a line through it to stop muting them.

Screen Shot 2019 04 16 at 10.31.43 AM

Tweets containing the words or phrases you've blocked won't appear where you've muted them, for as long as you've muted them.

How to mute keywords on the Twitter mobile app

Muting keywords on the Twitter app is a similar process, but involves tapping through a few more screens.

1. Tap your icon in the top left corner of the screen.

Twitter iPhone 1

2. In the side menu that opens, tap "Settings and privacy."

Twitter iPhone 2

3. This is the first of a few menus we'll have to get through. Tap "Content preferences."

Twitter iPhone 3

4. Tap "Muted."

5. Tap "Muted words."

6. This will bring you to a page similar to the one on desktop that lists all your currently muted words and phrases. Tap "Add" at the bottom of the screen to mute another word or phrase.

Twitter iPhone 6

7. Type the word or phrase you'd like to mute into the box at the top of the screen. The rest of the page is filled with options for changing how long you want the mute to last, and where it should apply.

Twitter iPhone 7

8. Tap "Save," and your new mute will take effect.

How to get rid of bed bugs and the products you need to do it

0

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

Bed Bug Pesticide 2

  • Bedbugs are the small, flat, brown insect from the Cimex lectularius and Cimex hemipterus that survive by consuming the blood of mammals, including human beings.
  • Bedbugs can be detected by evidence of their shed skins or droppings, by spotting the insects directly, or, of course, by the bites they leave on your body.
  • A bedbug can survive a year without feeding, so proper eradication is critical — never assume an infestation has simply resolved itself.
  • To combat bed bugs, you need a laundry treatment, a waterproof mattress cover, a pesticide spray, and a bedbug-killing heater. If all else fails, call the exterminator.

First, the good news: Bedbugs are not known to spread any infectious diseases. As they cannot fly or jump, their spread from one location to another is easy to prevent as long as you take proper precautions.

The bad news is that bedbug bites are itchy and often painful and lead to blistered welts and allergic reactions. Also, these parasitic insects can be found in every populated region on Earth. They can live for up to a year without feeding, lurking nearby, and waiting to bite again. And also they're gross. Though adult bedbugs are usually just four to five millimeters long at full size, the sight of one is enough to make most people swoon. Or sprint.

Ideally, you'll never have to deal with a bedbug infestation. But in case you do, we've got a few tips to help out. But first...

How to prevent a bedbug infestation

Once bedbugs get into your home (or office or shop), removing them can be quite the involved process. So prevent them from infesting in the first place by making sure none ever get in the door.

If you ever visit a location you think may have an infestation, inspect the area carefully, and don't stay there if you find evidence of bedbugs.

To be safe, always place luggage, clothing, and other personal items on stands or hung in the closet, making your property less accessible to these insects that must crawl to move. Keep your effects away from carpets, upholstered furniture, and of course beds.

When you get home later, consider immediately washing and drying all of your clothing that was along for the trip on a hot setting, and if possible, leave unpacked suitcases and even your shoes out in the garage or on a back porch. And change and bathe as soon as you return from anywhere with a potential bedbug infestation.

If you are bringing home a piece of furniture — especially a second hand piece — thoroughly inspect it and consider preemptive treatment if you have any suspicion of bedbug presence.

Also, make sure to keep your own home as neat, orderly, and clean as possible. Hang clothes or put them away in drawers, don't leave towels, linens, or pillows on the ground, and change sheets and make the bed regularly.

How to remove bed bugs from your home

The first thing you have to do here is be honest with yourself: Can you handle this bedbug issue, or should you call in the professionals? If an infestation has spread throughout your home, if the bites are causing you, your family, and/or your pets extreme discomfort, or if you just don't want to deal with a horde of parasitic blood-sucking insects yourself, then call the pros.

Otherwise, it's time to reclaim the residence from these nasty little characters, and it all starts with laundry.

Here are the products you need to fight bedbugs:

Read on in the slides below to check our our recommendations on how to get rid of bedbugs:

Wash the bugs away with plenty of heat

You will need to wash everything you can remove from the area that's infested. That means linens, the mattress cover, clothing, stuffed animals, and even curtains and drapes, if possible.

The most reliable way to kill bedbugs while doing to laundry is to use heat. Set the washing machine and dryer to their warmest settings and run long cycles. Also consider using a bedbug killing laundry additive that can be squirted in along with your detergent.

Buy the Hygea Natural Bed Bug Laundry Treatment at The Home Depot for $38.13

Take care of the bugs in your bedding

Before you put your mattress cover back on, use a brush with stiff bristles to scrape along all seams and along the sides of the mattress, removing insects and eggs alike. I recommend a brush with a replaceable head, for the record. And if you aren't already using a mattress cover that forms a complete seal around your mattress, now is the time to start!

Buy the Full Circle Laid Back 2.0 Dish Brush with Replaceable Head on Amazon for $7.83

Time for pesticides?

When used in moderation and precisely as directed, bedbug-killing pesticides are a safe and effective part of your extermination strategy. These pesticides might be necessary, frankly, unless you want to burn everything in your home and move to a new town, leaving your possessions behind.

Because while you can wash sheets and clothes and such, you can launder carpets, upholstery, or the mattress itself, you can kill the bedbugs hiding therein right where they are using a bed bug killing spray. Note that there are organic bed bug killer options available, though they may not be as effective.

I haven't worn foundation in months — these are the products that helped clear my skin

Foundation thumbnail 4_3 (1)

  • I've worn foundation regularly for six years, partly out of habit and largely because it covered up the sins of temperamental skin.
  • But I was sick of spending money and time to willfully clog my pores each day, sticking myself in an endless loop of relying on makeup.
  • Gradually, I phased in products that helped me get my skin to a healthy equilibrium and even tone. At this point, I haven't worn foundation in months — and my skin has been more consistently clear and smooth than ever.
  • Below, I detail what products I used and why. You can also find what I learned when I had a celebrity dermatologist audit my skin-care routine here.

For a pale and easily scarred teen going through their first bout of serious breakouts, foundation was a miracle — like some divine being descended from another realm and gave cavemen a lit torch in the Pleistocene epoch. You mean I can cover this up and it will still look like skin, kind of? Using it in high school helped buoy my confidence, and that alone was worth the time, expense, and (comparatively) minor protests from my skin. It was even worth avoiding hugging people wearing white lest they look like a screen print of Forrest Gump's smiley face shirt afterward.

In adulthood, though, I got more comfortable with the idea of imperfection. It no longer seemed like something to so actively avoid. But over the course of the last six years, foundation had become both a habit and a safety blanket. I was still almost unconsciously relying on it to cover up the aftermath of past breakouts, and said dependency wasn't helping other concerns like my skin texture or clogged pores.

In other words, once you start using foundation, it's hard to stop. But, about six months ago, I did. Rather than the expense or even skin clarity, it was the argument of time that finally got me to give it up. Instead of the 180 hours I would cumulatively spend every year just putting on makeup in the morning, would I perhaps be happier — both in the moment and with my priorities in general — if I could devote that time to enjoying a cup of coffee and reading a newspaper in the morning instead?

I understand that the simple decision of how you get to spend your time in the morning can be an immense luxury — especially for women, on whom the public passes judgment about appearance with all the nuance of an executioner. If someone had told me what I just told you during one of my severe breakouts, I would have felt anger and frustration at the sheer misconception and injustice of it all: you don't think I want to spend my mornings doing something else, too? Years later, though, I've been fortunate enough to age out of those breakouts, and my focus has shifted instead to the aftermath of discoloration and small flare-ups. That's why I can point to something like "time" and have the considerable privilege of that alone being enough of a reason to stop.

To transition out of wearing foundation, I began actively addressing my underlying skin concerns and building a more sustainable skin-care regime while phasing heavy makeup out. Before, my skin care had been reactionary. Now, it needed to be proactive — and tenable as well. For that, I used my collective experience as a commerce reporter, resources like renowned dermatologists, and plenty of research and self-testing to find the products that worked for me: clinical grade dark spot correctors, gentle but intense cleansers, cult-favorite clay face masks, and a prescription-strength retinoid treatment to name a few.

As of today, I haven't worn foundation for about five months — and I haven't needed or wanted to. I use a dab of my Holy Grail concealer and a brush to cover up any surprise blemishes, and I swipe on some mascara and head out the door in as little as ten minutes.

Altogether, my skin is the clearest, smoothest, and most evenly toned it's been in years. I've figured out how to maintain that actively with products, instead of more or less assuming it would always be at the whim of the universe. I've also started using skin care as makeup, rather than makeup that mimics skin care — and it looks better overall. I've added sunscreen since I used to rely on foundations to supply SPF, and, when I do wear makeup, I have more fun applying it.

Below, I run through the products I used to give up foundation and why each one works for my specific skin concerns. Skin care is notoriously subjective, and what works for me may not work for you, but they may be worth checking out if you're looking to do the same.

Below are the nine products I used to get my skin to a healthy state:

A micellar water that preps skin for face wash and respects the skin's natural barrier

Bioderma Sensibio H2O Micellar Water, available at Amazon and Dermstore, from $14.15

First, I wanted to get my skin to a place where going without foundation would feel comfortable — this meant at least partially addressing my main concerns, like clarity, hydration, and tone.

As I've heard echoed everywhere from the famed 10-step Korean skin-care routine to celebrity dermatologists, double-cleansing is a good idea. The first cleanser, such as a micellar water, removes the day's cream, makeup, and dirt gently, clearing the way for the next cleanser to reach deeper inside the skin and draw out sebum and bacteria.

I've tried others, but I've preferred this cult-favorite French pharmacy micellar water since discovering it while living in Paris — and I'm not the only one. The company estimates that a bottle is sold every two seconds, and it's firmly seated on Amazon's best-selling skin-care products

It's gentle enough to wipe away the day's grime without irritating my sensitive skin, and hydrating enough to make dual-cleansing viable for my dry skin. Equally important, micellar water respects the skin's hydro-lipid film (no micro-scratches working like chinks in the armor) which helps get your complexion on a sustainable, self-managed clarity track.

A non-soapy face wash that uses acids to gently exfoliate the skin

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta Pore Perfecting Cleansing Gel, available at Sephora, $38

For even tone, texture, and clarity that doesn't strip the skin of moisture, I swear by Dr. Dennis Gross' Alpha Beta facial cleanser.

Simply put, it's the best cleanser I've ever used — and you'd hope it would be after it took Dr. Gross four years to perfect. It's not a foam and wasn't formulated with soap, so it doesn't leave the skin feeling uncomfortably dry or tight. But, having said that, it's also a more intense clean. It works into a rich lather, and the alpha and beta hydroxy acids work diligently (on multiple levels of the skin) to slough away dead, tired cells and facilitate healthy turnover to even tone and texture. Altogether, it's formulated to treat skin concerns while maintaining the skin's integrity and pH balance.

After using it, my skin looks brighter and tighter, and dark spots faded at a faster rate thanks to frequent exfoliation. This worked for the no-foundation project twofold: I didn't feel the need to cover up my skin's imperfections because there were fewer of them, and I didn't want to cover it up because my skin actually looked better au naturel than it did covered in foundation.

I definitely still get the occasional blemish, but the texture and overall tone of my skin is so consistently even now that I typically just dab concealer on the spot, blend it into the surrounding skin with a brush, and head out the door.

A clinical-grade dark spot correcting serum

Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Clinical Grade IPL Dark Spot Correcting Serum, available at Sephora, $92

This was the high-impact, clinical-grade serum I turned to for treating dark spots quickly and efficiently. It has 10% L-ascorbic acid (which is another way of saying concentrated vitamin C) and Kojic acid, which is great for brightening dark spots, as well as lactic acid, a gentle exfoliator.

Within a few weeks (the company notes two to eight weeks depending on severity), I noticed my skin looking brighter and its tone evening out considerably. After four, it was even enough to skip foundation. That's because the IPL exfoliates your skin in its current state and prevents any additional lower pigment from surfacing. It also helps protect skin from environmental aggressors like free radicals.

10 smartphone habits that are getting in the way of your success

smartphone work

  • The smartphone has given us instantaneous connection and access to limitless information, while helping keep our lives in order.
  • However, spending too much time on social media, constantly receiving notifications, and sleeping near your smartphone could be hurting your productivity more than you think.
  • Here are 10 smartphone habits that are ruining your productivity, according to experts.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

Being on your phone at work, once the sign of a bad employee, is now the norm.

Text messages are "making deep inroads" in workplaces across America, says Wall Street Journal reporter Te-Ping Chen. Yet messaging your boss can lead to accidental texts like  "Love you" or "pumpkinbear."

"While email helps silo work communications, the text inbox is a more blended affair, where notes from friends and family jostle with communiqués from bosses and co-workers," Chen writes.

Besides awkward text exchanges, there are other miscues many employees can make as smartphones become more commonplace at work. For instance, overusing your phone or constantly getting bombarded with notifications can lead to decreased productivity.

"Productivity is often at its apex during a flow state," when a person is fully immersed in an activity, NYC-based psychotherapist Jordana Jacobs told Business Insider.

According to Jacobs, while phones are great for the technology they provide, they also feed into our natural distracted state. Cell phones take us out of the flow state, "which is so fundamental to productivity," she said. "Essentially, we are consistently interrupting our own thought process," she said. To put it simply, our phones "take us away from 'the now,'" she added.

It's probably not plausible for you to get rid of your phone at work completely, but you can still take steps to keep it from getting in the way of your goals.

The first step to being more productive is identifying all the ways our phones keep us from staying focused. Jacobs andJonathan Alpert, psychotherapist and author of "Be Fearless: Change Your Life in 28 Days," broke down the phone habits that are ruining our productivity:

This article was originally written by Audrey Noble.

Mindlessly checking emails on your phone can easily take you out of the flow state that productivity requires.

According to Jacobs, smartphones take us out of being in the present. When we're constantly checking those work and personal emails, she said it puts us in the mindset of, "I'm doing this rather than just being where I am now."

Constantly taking out your smartphone to take a photo can keep you from being in the moment.

One of the perks of today's smartphones is that they double as high-quality cameras.

While it's great to want to take a picture here and there to have a keepsake of a particular moment, Jacobs said that playing paparazzi in our own lives is another way of taking us from living in the now.

Checking social media on a smartphone makes us obsessed with what everyone else is doing at the expense of the actual task in front of us.

Social media can feed our obsession with other people's lives, but Jacobs said it's also a platform for us to brag to our followers about what we are doing or have done.

The 100,000-point bonus for Marriott's new luxury card is a no-brainer — but you only have a few more days to get it

Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card

  • The introductory 100,000-point welcome bonus on the new Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant™ American Express® Card ends this week — this is your last chance to get it.
  • The offer ends this Wednesday, April 24. If you apply before then, you'll earn 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy points after spending $5,000 in the first three months.
  • Those 100,000 points can be used for anything from a night or two in a top-tier luxury hotel or resort, to four or five nights in a lower category hotel, or can be transferred to airline partners for free flights.
  • Marriott's small-business credit card — the Marriott Bonvoy Business™ American Express® Card— is offering the same bonus, but it also ends April 24.

In January, Marriott wrapped up a major rebranding of its loyalty program, combining it with the Starwood Preferred Guest program to create a single entity: Marriott Bonvoy.

Despite some bumps, there's excellent value to be had from the program and from its rewards credit cards.

As part of the rebrand, Marriott revamped its co-branded rewards credit cards and launched introductory welcome bonuses on the new products — but only for a limited time.

There are two personal cards, but one of them — the Bonvoy Brilliant AmEx, which is the premium card — will lower its bonus after Wednesday, April 24.

Until this Wednesday, April 24, new cardholders who open the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant American Express Card, formerly called the SPG Luxury Card, can earn 100,000 Marriott Bonvoy points when they spend $5,000 on the card in the first three months.

Read more: 8 of the best credit-card offers this month — including 2 huge hotel bonuses that end soon

While the card has a high $450 annual fee, it's easy to get much more than that amount in value, especially if you stay at Marriott hotels semi-frequently.

Right off the bat, the card offers up to $300 a year in statement credits for purchases at participating Marriott hotels, which can apply to room charges. That effectively brings the fee down to $150.

It also offers a free-night award each year on your card-member anniversary, which can be redeemed at any hotel that costs 50,000 points a night or less. Depending on how you redeem the free night, when you consider it with the annual statement credits, that should negate the fee — and potentially turn a profit.

Plus, last month, Marriott and AmEx added an additional benefit to the card: an up-to-$100, on-property credit during any eligible stay at a Ritz-Carlton or St. Regis hotel or resort. Any time you stay for two or more nights at an eligible property, you'll get up to a $100 credit on your bill for things like food, drinks, or spa services. Just make sure to select the "Luxury Credit Card Rate" when you search for hotels. It's generally the same as the regular Marriott Bonvoy member-discount rates but opts you in to receive the credit.

The card also offers complimentary Gold elite status and comes with a Priority Pass Select airport lounge membership.

The card earns 6x points at participating Marriott hotels, triple points at US restaurants and on flights booked directly with the airline, and double points on everything else.

The non-premium Marriott credit card — the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card, which is issued by Chase — is also offering a limited-time 100,000-point bonus after you spend $5,000 in the first three months, but that one doesn't end until May 2.

Additionally, Marriott's small-business credit card — the Marriott Bonvoy Business AmEx— is offering 100,000 points after spending $5,000 in the first three months, but like the Bonvoy Brilliant, it ends April 24.

Inside an exclusive, $56,000-a-year NYC private school, where hedge-fund managers and tech millionaires send their kids and every student gets a MacBook and an iPad

Avenues: The World School is a private school in New York City for nursery through 12th grade that costs $56,400 per year.

Avenues operates campuses in New York City, Sao Paolo, Brazil, and Shenzhen, China. The New York campus was the first to open in 2012, but Avenues plans to build campuses in at least 20 cities in the next decade, including Abu Dhabi, Beijing, Dubai, Hong Kong, London, Miami, San Francisco, Silicon Valley, and Singapore. Avenues wants to be thought of as "one school with many interconnected and interdependent campuses located in the world's leading cities," according to the website.

Parents of Avenues children range from hedge-fund managers and entrepreneurs to tech millionaires and celebrities. Suri Cruise, the daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, reportedly attended the school

Students at Avenues are given MacBooks and iPads, take yoga and dance classes, and graduate fluent in either Mandarin or Spanish.

Tuition includes all books and materials, field trips, transportation to and from school activities, lunch, snacks, athletic uniforms, and educational technology such as the Apple products.

I took a tour of the New York City campus in Chelsea with Alissa Dufour, the school's communication director. Here's what it looked like.

Avenues: The World School is a private school in New York City for nursery through 12th grade that costs $56,400 per year.

The 1,650 students come from all over Manhattan, parts of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Hoboken and Jersey City, and even from as far as Long Island and Western Connecticut — often because their parents already commute into the city, according to David Buckwald, the director of admissions.

Parents of Avenues children range from hedge-fund managers and entrepreneurs to tech millionaires and celebrities. Suri Cruise, the daughter of Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, reportedly attended the school

Avenues also attracts international families who are living in New York and who perhaps have multiple citizenships, Buckwald said.

The school is in Chelsea, an affluent Manhattan neighborhood just south of Hudson Yards, the city's new $25 billion development.

Students can also take online courses.

"One [of our students] is a pre-Olympic athlete, one is starring on Broadway, and they're able to take a semester leave of absence but stay enrolled in Avenues through our online campus," Buckwald said.

Chelsea, an area known for its art galleries, is one of the city's wealthier neighborhoods. The median income in Chelsea was more than $104,000 in 2016.

The median household income in New York City as a whole is $57,782.

Approximately 16% of students at Avenues receive financial aid, Buckwald told me, and the school provided more than $9 million in financial aid for the 2018-19 school year.

Avenues, I noticed, is right across the street from public housing, the Chelsea-Elliot Houses.

The internet can't stop talking about these leggings made of recycled water bottles — and now I understand why

26239587_1765552603749149_3475258494542664013_n

  • I own nearly 20 pairs of black leggings, but Girlfriend Collective'sClassic High-Rise ($68) has been my all-time favorite for athleisure for two years now.
  • Girlfriend Collective leggings are made from a flattering and helpful compression material that never pills. The well-placed seams elongate and slim.
  • Each legging is made from 25 recycled water bottles, and the company prioritizes ethical and sustainable production, which they're transparent about.
  • Girlfriend Collective leggings are sold at prices as low as $58, which is a steal in terms of industry standards and quality.

I own a lot of leggings. At the same time that I was running a little over 20 miles a week in a different pair every day, the athleisure trend hit — and I subsequently buried myself in black semi-spandex.

In that sea of options in my closet, there are a very select few that I really love — the ones that I know the feel of by memory and actually remember which company makes them so I can tell my friends when they ask. The pair that I love the most — thanks to their inventive, impossibly flattering seams; opaque, no-pill material; and thick holds-you-in-all-the-right-places fit — is from Seattle-based startup Girlfriend Collective.

You might know them best as the company that gave away its leggings for free over the internet in 2016. I first heard of them from that publicity stunt, when I paid $20 for shipping from Vietnam and $0 for a pair of classic high-rise leggings (now $68) while a senior in college.

A couple years later, those leggings are still my all-time favorite for athleisure. They're still dark black (even after many washes), the aforementioned seams follow the natural line of your body and slim as well as elongate legs, and the material and fit is still somewhat architectural, like a comfortable and slightly looser pair of Spanx. The no-pill material is slightly chicer than a normal athletic legging, so something about them feels "dressier" than my Lululemons, for example, which makes them easier to throw on for brunch or running errands.

20190228_Girlfriend_Collective 1607_1200x

I recently tried a new pair of the label's leggings that they sent over, and they're just as great as I remember. More than that, in comparison, my two-year-old pair still looks brand new. The no-pill claims are no joke.

Now, you can pick up the Classic Hi-Rise in five essential colors and fifteen limited colors — from electric lime to rose quartz. Sizes range from XXS to 6XL, and you can pick the length of the leg to ensure an optimal fit (from a 19.5" to 28.5" inseam).

Though the company encourages you to wear them for athleisure or exercise, their ability to transition to streetwear so well has made them my go-to athleisure staple. I've worn them during outdoor runs, but their thicker construction means that, as someone who prefers to run on a treadmill in a temperature-controlled gym and is prone to overheating, I don't recommend them for cardio or hot yoga (you could, but there are too many better options). Thanks to pairs like 2XU's Run Tights that operate like a porous second skin, I don't mind the limited versatility.

The secret to their incredibly flattering, Spanx-like fit is in the details: The core fabric used for them offers Girlfriend Collective's highest compression for muscle recovery after medium- to high-impact workouts, and enough softness to be comfortable. The leggings run true to size in my experience, and the company says the material will break in like your favorite pair of jeans the more you wear them. If you're worried about fit, use their Fit Guide here.

It would be one thing if Girlfriend Collective just made my favorite pair of flattering leggings, but they make them for much less than my other go-to pairs at $68 for a pair of classic high-rise. They're also ethically made and sustainably sourced.

Read more: I put the trendy leggings made from recycled fishing nets to the test in a hot yoga class — and yes, they're super breathable

688_Coco_Look_9_054

Each pair of their leggings is created with 25 recycled water bottles (79% RPET), out of material made at Girlfriend Collective's Fair Trade facility in Taiwan. This saves 3.11 gallons of water and prevents 18.61 pounds of CO2.

Some "recycled" fabric production has been exploiting the loopholes by buying unused water bottles to churn a higher profit, but Girlfriend Collective's center is carefully monitored by the Taiwanese government recycling authority to make sure that's not the case for this company. Since you always have a choice of where you spend your money, even though some of us conveniently forget uncomfortable truths, Girlfriend Collective's factory uses no forced or child labor, mandates fair working hours and safe conditions, pays living wages, and allows workers to unionize.

I would love the fit of the leggings no matter what, but it's also an incentive knowing that my purchase reflects my values. Recycling is always a choice— even in clothing. It's nice to get the best product out there and simultaneously support a company that puts humane working conditions and sustainability first. Girlfriend Collective is one of my favorite no-compromise options.

All in all, I've spent a fair bit of time in leggings — and Girlfriend Collective's are made in a kinder, smarter way as well as delivering the most flattering fit at an unusually budget-friendly price. Win-win-win. If you're looking for a new pair, I highly recommend grabbing some for yourself before the bright, summertime limited colors are gone.
