Chipotle is adding vegan and vegetarian options to the menu — here's why the CEO says it is happening now

chipotle burrito bowl

  • Chipotle added vegan and vegetarian options to the menu this week, as Lent begins.
  • "As we get ready to move into Lent or certain seasons where vegetarian or certain non-meat opportunities present themselves, nobody even knows we have sofritas," CEO Brian Niccol told Business Insider in January.
  • Chains from McDonald's to Chick-fil-A are attempting to accommodate Catholic customers who may abstain from eating meat on Fridays during Lent.

Chipotle is adding vegan and vegetarian options to the menu, as the chain attempts to compete with fast-food rivals eager to win over Catholic customers during Lent.

On Monday, Chipotle announced it would add a vegan bowl and a vegetarian bowl to the menu.

Read more:Chipotle is adding new menu items to win over vegan and vegetarian customers, using an ingredient the CEO says 'nobody' knows about

The bowls are an extension of Chipotle's "Lifestyle Bowls" line, which launched in January and highlights buzzy dieting trends, with the Paleo Salad Bowl, the Keto Salad Bowl, and the Whole30 Salad Bowl. All the bowls are available to purchase online or on the chain's app.

The timing of the launch is intentional. As fast-food chains launch fish sandwiches to accommodate Catholic customers during Lent, when many abstain from meat on Fridays, Chipotle wants to make sure Americans know they have options at the fast-casual chain.

"As we get ready to move into Lent or certain seasons where vegetarian or certain non-meat opportunities present themselves, nobody even knows we have sofritas," CEO Brian Niccol told Business Insider in January.

Niccol continued: "Frankly, even if they know we do have sofritas, a lot of them don't even know that it is plant-based."

We visited Family Dollar, the store that analysts say is becoming Dollar Tree's biggest problem. Here's what we found. (DLTR)

Family Dollar

  • Dollar Tree announced Wednesday that it is closing as many as 390 Family Dollar stores in 2019. This follows 85 closings during the fourth quarter of 2018.
  • Analysts say Family Dollar has been a drag on Dollar Tree's earnings and "remains the weaker part of the business."
  • In its most recent quarterly results, reported on Wednesday, same-store sales at Dollar Tree were up 3.2%. Family Dollar saw a more modest increase of 1.4%.
  • We visited one of its stores to find out what it is like to shop there.

It has been three years since Dollar Tree bought Family Dollar, and so far, it's been a disappointing run.

The discount chain, which has over 8,000 stores in the United States (Dollar Tree has 6,776 in the US) has pulled down its parent company's earnings. In its most recent quarterly results, Dollar Tree’s same-store sales grew by 3.2% during the quarter while Family Dollar’s were up by a more modest 1.4%.

Dollar Tree is now taking decisive action to manage this. On Wednesday, during earnings, it announced that it would close as many as 390 Family Dollar stores in fiscal 2019. This follows the closing of 85 store at the chain during the fourth quarter of 2018.

It is "clear that Family Dollar is underperforming, both as a division and within the wider market," Neil Saunders, managing director at GlobalData Retail, wrote in a note to clients on Wednesday.

He continued: "The continued problems at the Family Dollar division have resulted in an impairment of its brand value to the tune of $2.73 billion. Such a deterioration undermines some of the economics on which the acquisition and integration of Family Dollar were based."

Dollar Tree acquired Family Dollar in 2015, after undergoing a bidding war with Dollar General, its main US rival. Dollar Tree and Dollar General are almost neck-and-neck in terms of store count and annual sales.

The bidding war may have distracted Dollar Tree and led them to "gloss over some of the glaring problems at [Family Dollar]," Credit Suisse analysts wrote in June.

"Family Dollar clearly preferred Dollar Tree as the acquirer (since the Family Dollar name was more likely to survive), and Dollar Tree likely wanted to prevent Dollar General from nearly doubling its size overnight," the analysts wrote.

In August, we decided to check out what it was like to shop at Family Dollar. Here's what we saw:

SEE ALSO: We shopped at Dollar Tree and Dollar General to see which offered a better experience, and the winner was obvious

The Family Dollar store we visited was located in Brooklyn, New York. On average, its stores are around 7,000 square feet in size.

At the entrance of the store was a selection of seasonal products. This tactic is also used by its sister store, Dollar Tree, to grab the attention of the shopper and make sure items with a shorter shelf life don't go unnoticed.

The layout of the store and assortment felt a lot more similar to a Dollar General store than a Dollar Tree.

In fact, Credit Suisse analysts say it would likely have made more sense for Dollar General to acquire Family Dollar. The offering is more in line, and there is a limited overlap in terms of where stores are located.

Family Dollar stores are generally found in urban areas while Dollar General stores are typically located in rural places.

2 major things Target employees would like to tell shoppers, but can't (TGT)

target employee 9

  • Target store employees told Business Insider that they have a few things they wish they could ask shoppers to stop doing.
  • Business Insider asked 18 Target team members to discuss the things that they wish they could tell customers — but can't.
  • For the most part, their responses fell into two major categories: Don't be rude, and don't make a mess.

Target store employees have a few complaints about the behavior of certain shoppers.

Business Insider corresponded with 18 Target employees about their experiences at the retail chain. We asked them what they'd like to tell guests — but can't.

We found that the majority of the responses fell into two main categories. Some Target employees discussed rude and impatient behavior on the part on shoppers. Others said they wished that customers would stop leaving trash and unwanted products all over the stores.

Here's what the Target team members had to say:

1. Don't be rude

"Just don't be rude and I promise I'll help you find things my entire shift," an employee of eight months said.

Two Target team members explained that they don't appreciate it when customers become angry because the store doesn't have a certain item in stock.

"How many times do I have to tell you that we do not have the item that you're looking for in the back room?" an employee of seven months told Business Insider.

If the product you're looking for isn't available, then the employees said to cut your losses rather than taking out your annoyance on the Target team member.

"Quit throwing fits because we stopped carrying something," another Target employee told Business Insider. "It isn't the team members' fault."

Plus, getting aggressive might backfire. An employee with three years of experience told Business Insider, "If you are rude, and ask if there is any in the back, we don't check. We complain to other members about you and tell you, 'I'm sorry but we don't have any in the back.' Being nice pays."

Three other Target team members described creepy interactions with some store patrons.

"Don't confuse good customer service with flirting," said a Target employee with eight months of experience.

"I'm only saying hello because I'm paid to do so," a team member who's worked at the store for about a year told Business Insider.

Another Target team member with two years said they had a "stalker" who'd follow them around at the store.

Two other Target team members who've worked at the store for one year or two years added that it's always frustrating to encounter shoppers who give off an air of superiority.

2. Don't make a mess

"I cannot explain how many candles and fake plants I find in the clothes," a Target employee who's worked at the store for eight months told Business Insider. "If you decide you don't want something, give it to a team member."

They added that, "as long as you're nice about" handing the product over to a cashier, cart attendant, or other team member, Target employees "would rather you give it to us in that moment."

"Please throw your trash away," the Target team member added. "Starbucks cups, popcorn bags, wrappers of any kind: Throw them away."

Four other Target team members who've worked for the chain for five years, three years, and about two years agreed about the issue of leaving trash in the carts and store.

"Pick up after yourself," a Target employee of five years told Business Insider. "You are a guest in our domain and slobbish-ly leave garbage and products on the floor and out of place. Treat your local Target with respect."

The best sanders you can buy

$

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

the best sanders

  • Sanders help you create smooth, evenly finished surfaces without the drudgery of working with a piece of handheld sandpaper.
  • Not all sanding jobs call for the same sanders, though, so carefully consider the projects at hand before committing to one.
  • We found the best sanders across multiple tool categories to help you tackle any and all sanding with maximum efficiency.
  • Whether you need a random orbit sander, a belt sander, a file sander, a manual sander, a detail sander, or a wall sander, we have a pick for you.

One of the best pieces of furniture my wife and I ever bought was a massive table for which we paid about $210. I say about because I'm estimating the number of orbital sander pads we went through in restoring the thing. Also, there were a couple dollars for a half can of stain. Ready for a quick story?

Back in 2011, we bought our first house, a lovely ranch nestled in the foothills of Glendale, California. As it happens, that same year Borders, the bookstore chain, was going defunct. We stopped by the Glendale location shortly before it closed, intrigued by the "Everything Must Go" sale. There, in the middle of the nearly empty store sat a huge wooden table strewn with random DVDs and books. When we asked the manager if the table itself was for sale, he took a look at it and said sure, naming $200 as the price.

The table was covered in scratches, graffiti, and had gum stuck all over it, but it was also a rock-solid behemoth of a piece of furniture — we have fit 14 people around it for dinner. We loaded it into a friend's truck, drove it home, and I set to work. After an entire afternoon spent working on the table with my trusty random orbital sander, all scratches, gouges, pen and pencil, and of course all gum had been removed, as had the honey-colored lacquer covering the wood. Next, I applied two coats of a dark ebony stain and then waited 48 hours for the stain to dry.

In all honesty, the finished table would probably sell for a good $2,000 or more at a place like Pottery Barn. So I'd say the approximate $210 investment and the hours of elbow grease were well worth it.

Without a sander, I can't even imagine how long the process would have taken. Frankly, I probably wouldn't have even considered the restoration possible. With a good sander, however, you can breathe new life into everything from cabinets to cribs, desks to dressers, fences, flooring, and so much more. But not all sanders were created for the same projects, and in fact, using the wrong sander for a given application can prove more deleterious than beneficial. So choose wisely! Or just read on, because I've tried to make this all pretty straightforward for you.

Here are the best sanders you can buy:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best random orbit sander

Why you'll love it: The DeWalt Variable Speed Random Orbit Sander is powerful enough for commercial work yet comfortable even with extended use thanks to the vibration reducing counterweight.

If you have ever used an orbital sander for an extended period of time, say, for example, for three or four fours more or less straight while sanding a table you got from a Borders store right before it closed down, then you know how sore your arms and shoulders can get.

Constantly applying pressure to the sander and resisting its powerful vibrations can be quite a workout. So anyone with a good deal of sanding to do will appreciate the large overmold grip and the vibration reduction created by the counterweight built into the DeWalt Variable Speed Random Orbit Sander.

This sander can be set to oscillate at anywhere between 8,000 and 12,000 OPM (oscillations per minute), and by pairing that level of control with a sanding pad of the right grit for the project, you are assured of successful sanding. The locking dust bag helps keep the area relatively clean — though there will still be fine sawdust all over the place, of course — while the included carrying bag makes transporting and storing the tool tidy and easy. A dust-sealed switch ensures the electronic components of the sander are protected.

If you have finishing work to do on cabinets, shelves, or other wooden built-ins or you are working on just about any piece of furniture, this is a great sander for you.

With more than 300 reviews posted on Amazon, most shoppers agree with me: The DeWalt Variable Speed Random Orbit Sander has a solid 4.6-star overall rating.

A writer from The Spruce noted how the DeWalt orbital's design "does a great job of keeping vibration to a minimum, making it a cinch to control."

Pros: Broad oscillation speed control, comfortable for extended use, reliable dust collection

Cons: On/off switch annoying to operate

Buy the DeWalt DWE6423K Variable Speed Random Orbit Sander on Amazon for $79 (originally $89)

The best belt sander

Why you'll love it: With its 4-by-24-inch sanding surface, the Makita Belt Sander makes short work of big jobs.

Got a floor, deck, or other extra large area in need of some serious sanding? Then you'll need a serious piece of equipment, and the 11-amp Makita 4 inch by 24 inch Belt Sander is just that.

With a belt speed of 1,640 feet per minute and its large surface area, this powerful sander makes short work of large projects, helping you refinish floors or large pieces of furniture or prep wood for later cutting and use.

Just keep in mind that with this potent, 13-pound tool comes plenty of potential to mess up a piece of wood, so use care and avoid scratches and gouges. Despite all that power, you'll be pleased to find the sander relatively quiet, operating at less than 85 decibels. Thanks to the dual grips and smooth operation of the motor and bearings, it's relatively comfortable to use, too.

While the $250 price tag of the Makita Belt Sander surely isn't small, the hours you save thanks to its efficient performance help compensate for the cost.

With more than 275 reviews left by customers, the Makita Belt Sander has a fine 4.3-star averaged rating.

A reviewer from CutTheWood calls the Makita 9403 "heavy duty and efficient" and says it is "worth every penny" despite how it tends to clog up with dust during use, requiring pauses to clean the tool off.

Pros: Large surface area, quiet operation, built to last for years

Cons: Rather pricey, clogs with dust during use

Buy the Makita 9403 4 inch by 24 inch Belt Sander on Amazon for $249.95 (originally $418.20)

The best file sander

Why you'll love it: The Milwaukee Bandfile with Paddle Switch is tough enough for use on all sorts of materials, including wood, fiberglass, and even iron.

File sanders are superlative tools for sanding in hard-to-reach areas or for making precise adjustments to furniture, a built-in shelf or cabinet, or to smoothing down a piece of pipe, rebar, or other construction material.

The 5.5-amp Milwaukee Bandfile with Paddle Switch has a long, narrow head that can reach into tight spaces and that can be used to grind down small patches of material. Whereas a belt sander might be perfect for sanding off a large surface like a floor, this sander is ideal for touching up wooden molding or staircase balusters.

Thanks to the rugged construction of this Milwaukee Bandfile, its use isn't limited to wood, either. With a belt of the right grit installed, it can grind down the ragged end of a pipe, smooth out fiberglass, and sand and polish various other materials as well. Thanks to the single-handed operation of the paddle switch, the tool can be easily used in cramped areas, overhead, or while you steady the surface you're sanding with your other hand.

The price tag might put this file sander outside the budget of the casual DIY enthusiast, but its power and versatility make it a great choice for the commercial-grade shopper.

Home Depot shoppers have given the Milwaukee Bandfile with Paddle Switch a four-star overall rating.

Several reviewers did note its heaviness, though, saying the weight made its use a challenge in some conditions.

Pros: Narrow head for precise sanding, single-handed operation, works on myriad surfaces

Cons: Heavy, large price tag

Buy the Milwaukee Bandfile with Paddle Switch at Home Depot for $219

52 cool cars that have been discontinued over the last 30 years

Honda S2000 2005

  • Many cool, funky, and interesting cars, trucks, and SUVs have come and gone over the past three decades from marques like Honda, Toyota, Chevrolet, Ford, BMW, Mazda, Subaru, and Jeep
  • Entire brands such as Hummer, Pontiac, Saab, and Plymouth have disappeared.
  • Business Insider put together a list of 52 cars with nameplates that have been discontinued over the past 30 years.
  • These weren't always the most commercially successful models, but they were certainly memorable.

Much has changed in the car business over the past 30 years. Some great names in the have come and gone. Marques such as Hummer, Pontiac, Saab, and Plymouth have all disappeared. While names such Supra and Bronco are set for a return after a period of dormancy.

The pace of change has been dramatic. The old fashioned five-speed stick shift has now transformed in six or seven-speed manuals transmissions that are itself set to be rendered extinct by ten-speed automatics and CVTs. Monstrous V8s have fallen out of favor. Instead, turbocharged four-cylinders, V6s, and hybrid electric drivetrains reign supreme. At the same time, the once-dominant sedan has fallen victim to the consumer's insatiable demand for crossover SUVs.

Horsepower has also become commonplace. When the Dodge Viper debuted in 1992 with 400 horsepower, it was a figure that seemed insurmountable at the time. These days, there are hybrid Volvo station wagons with more juice. Horsepower is also very affordable. A 460 horsepower Ford Mustang GT can be had for just $35,000 while a 707 horsepower Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat costs a "mere" $68,000.

Cars arguably have never been better.

But there's also been some seriously cool, funky, and interesting cars that have put out to pasture. Cars that today's young drivers in the US have unfortunately missed out on. So we here at Business Insider have put together a list of 52 cars that have been discontinued over the past 30 years.

These weren't always the most commercially successful undertakings, but they were certainly memorable. The cars, trucks, and SUVs on this list aren't ranked in any particular order as they are all worthy of being on this list. They are also all nameplates that we offered for sale in the US but are no longer around. We also chose not to include any supercars on the list. Which means models like the BMW M3, Audi RS6, Dodge Viper, Acura NSX, and Chevrolet Corvette won't be on this list regardless of the awesomeness of its previous incarnations.

Here's a closer look at 52 discontinued cars today's teens missed out on in alphabetical order.

Hyundai just gave us a first look at the new Sonata sedan that will take on the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry

Hyundai Sonata 2020

  • Hyundai gave the public a first look at its new 2020 Sonata sedan on Tuesday.
  • The midsize Sonata will take on rivals such as the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, and Chevrolet Malibu.
  • The Sonata is now a four-door coupe with a fastback roofline instead of a traditional sedan.
  • Hyundai did not provide any technical or pricing information for the 2020 Sonata. Stay tuned. There's more to come.

Hyundai gave the public a first look at its new 2020 Sonata sedan on Tuesday. The midsize Sonata is one of Hyundai's most prominent products.

However, the shrinking market for midsize cars in the US has hit the Sonata hard with sales falling 20% in 2018 to  105,000 units. It's now the sixth best selling model in the segment behind the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion, and Chevrolet Malibu.

Read more: We drove a $31,000 Nissan Altima to see if it's ready to challenge the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Here's our verdict.

With the eighth-generation Sonata, Hyundai may be able to give its sedan a jolt in the sales department.

Hyundai Sonata 2020As first impressions go, the new Sonata is a looker.

"Sonata celebrates innovative coupe-like silhouette," Sang Yup Lee, senior vice president and head of the Hyundai Design Center said in a statement. "A short overhang, sloping roofline, and low deck lid create a balanced feel, and Hyundai’s signature chrome accent now goes all the way into the hood."

Hyundai succeeds in making a car that's sleeker and sportier than its predecessor. It's 1.2 inches lower, an inch wider and it's 1.8 inches longer.

The styling for the new Sonata is based on the company's Le Fil Rouge concept car that debuted at last year's Geneva Motor Show.

Hyundai Sonata 2020The Sonata's interior has also been completely revamped. According to Hyundai, the driver's instrument panel is designed to look like the wing of a stealth fighter.

"This shape almost levitates or floats when looked at, and this philosophy carries into the long armrests," the company said in a statement. "Satin chrome accents enhance this effect."

Unfortunately, Hyundai did not provide any technical or pricing information for the 2020 Sonata. Stay tuned. There's more to come.

  • Blockbuster has just one store that remains open in the entire world, located in Bend, Oregon.
  • The retailer announced this week that the last Blockbuster in Australia is closing, leaving a single store left in the world.
  • Read on to see what it's like to visit the last Blockbuster.

Blockbuster's last stand is in Bend, Oregon.

This week, the last Blockbuster in Australia announced it was shutting down. In July, Blockbuster announced that the last two stores in Alaska would close up shop

"Let's be real, you have Netflix, you have Redbox," Kevin Daymude, a Blockbuster manager in Alaska prior to the stores' closure in the state, told reporter Emily Russell in an interview for Business Insider's podcast "Household Name."

"The economy is tough right now," Daymude said. "So, people are still renting — but they aren't renting as much."

The closure leaves just one Blockbuster location left in the entire world.

The holdout is in Bend, a city in central Oregon with an estimated population just shy of 100,000. As the last Blockbuster locations across the US have closed — with two other Blockbusters in Oregon closing in recent months — travelers have begun making their way to Bend in a nostalgic pilgrimage to the video-rental chain.

The best shower curtain liners you can buy

best shower curtain liners

  • A shower curtain liner protects your decorative, more expensive shower curtain and helps prevent water from escaping to the bathroom floor.
  • We researched several shower curtain liners to find the best ones to fit every budget and shower configuration.

When it's time for a shower, you probably don't give much thought to a shower curtain liner until you see puddles of water all over the floor. A shower curtain liner helps keep water contained and protects your more expensive decorative shower curtain from mildew, cleaning products that could cause discoloration, and frequent washings that can fade the fabric.

Before you shop for a liner, it's vital to measure the shower so that you will purchase the correct size. Most liners are a standard 72 inches by 72 inches. However, that size simply won't work on larger shower stalls or in a custom designed shower and tub.

To find the correct size, measure the width of your shower rod or circumference of the track for free-standing clawfoot tubs and showers. Add 12 inches to the measurement to prevent leaks along the edges. To find the best length, measure from the bottom of the shower curtain rod to the top of the tub or the floor of the shower. For a tub and shower combo, add 4 inches to the length so that the liner will fall inside the tub to prevent water leakage.

If you have a shower curtain that opens in the middle like drapes, purchase two appropriately-sized liners for full coverage.

Whether you choose a top-of-the-line shower curtain liner or a budget friendly one, be sure to select one that contains weights or magnets along the bottom hem. The magnets will cling to tubs that contain metal or act as weights in fiberglass fixtures to keep the liner in place. This is particularly important for lightweight liners or if you have high water pressure that creates a vortex that pulls the liner inward. No one wants to battle the shower curtain liner every morning.

Here are the best shower curtain liners you can buy:

Read on in the slides below to discover our top picks.

The best shower curtain liner on a budget

Why you'll love it: If you are looking for an inexpensive but functional shower curtain liner, Target's Room Essentials Solid Super Soft PEVA Shower Liner is a great choice.

While this shower curtain liner is not on the cutting edge of fashion, Target's Room Essentials Solid Super Soft PEVA Shower Liner is an excellent buy for anyone on a budget. The 71-by-70-inch liner offers features that you probably won't find in other lower-cost liners.

Made of a soft non-chlorinated PEVA or polyethylene vinyl acetate, the liner is a good choice over PVC or polyvinyl chloride liners. There are concerns about the health effects and fumes that arise when PVC is heated. The liner header has a reinforced buttonhole top for curtain rings to slip through or can be used with clips. And, the three magnets at the bottom of the liner will keep it flat against tub walls.

Reviewers on Target's site have given the liner 4.25 stars out of five. One shopper wrote: "A little shorter than liners I’ve had in the past but water never escapes and does the job. Probably the best liners I’ve ever had. Doesn’t collect mold like liners I’ve had in my shower. Not flimsy at all, probably one of the thickest ones I’ve had. Highly recommend. Can’t beat the price either."

The liner can be washed with sheets and towels in warm water and hung to drip dry. At this price, you may just want to replace it every few months and use the old one as a drop cloth.

Pros: Very low cost, weighted bottom, made of soft, non-toxic vinyl

Cons: Slightly smaller than some liners, lightweight and can tear if pulled on excessively

Buy Room Essentials Solid Super Soft PEVA Shower Liner at Target for $2.99

The best extra large shower curtain liner

Why you'll love it: If you have a clawfoot tub and shower or a custom-designed shower stall, the N&Y Home Extra Wide Shower Curtain Liner provides the coverage you need.

You finally have the bathroom of your dreams and it includes a huge walk-in shower or a clawfoot tub and shower fixture. Now, where are you going to find a shower curtain liner large enough to fit the space properly? Fortunately, there is N&Y Home Extra Wide Shower Curtain Linerto come to the rescue.

While this liner comes in 26 different sizes, it is one of the few on the market available in a 108-by-72-inch size. The liner is made from a white closely knit polyester fabric with a subtle diamond pattern that is water-repellent, quick-drying, and sturdy. To help support the weight of the fabric, the reinforced top header includes 18 metal grommets for easy and reliable hanging.

The liner is machine-washable in cold water and comes with a three-month warranty against mildew and bacterial growth. It can be tumbled dry and ironed on low heat if you decide to use it as a shower curtain.

Of the more than 1,300 reviews on Amazon, N&Y Home Shower Curtain Liners have an average of 4.5 stars. One buyer wrote, "Great! Does just what it says. Water beads up on it and it dries quickly. We have a bathroom that doesn't get much air circulation if any, and we've gone through a few plastic liners because they mold so fast. I shake this out after the shower and turn the fan on. It's dry within an hour or so. Washes well too. Great investment!"

Pros: Extra wide width, quick-drying fabric, mildew resistant

Cons: Not weighted at the bottom, the fabric may not be as water-resistant after washing

Buy N&Y Home Extra Wide Shower Curtain Liner (108 inches by 72 inches) on Amazon for $15.99

The best fabric shower curtain liner

Why you'll love it: If you want a shower curtain liner that can stand alone and add a bit of flair to your bath decor, then the Maytex Microfiber Textured Shower Curtain Liner is an excellent choice.

Not everyone wants to spend money on both a shower curtain liner and a decorative outer curtain. Perhaps you're simply renting or plan to move soon and just want something that looks good and keeps the water contained. The Maytex Microfiber Textured Shower Curtain Liner will provide both at a reasonable price.

The liner is sized to fit a standard tub-shower combination with its 72-by-72-inch dimensions. This textured polyester microfiber curtain comes in Sport Khaki, White, and Dark Grey. The top is finished with reinforced button holes for shower curtain rings and there are three weighted magnets at the bottom. Easily machine-washable, the fabric is resistant to wrinkling and is quick-drying.

On JC Penny's website, 100% of the reviewers would recommend buying this shower curtain liner. Many expressed their pleasure that the fabric is not just water repellent but also nearly waterproof.

One online reviewer named Bernie writes, "We recently downsized to enjoy a more simple life ... My search began and, after buying four [shower curtains] that said "water repellent," I was about to give up. Water repellent does not mean waterproof so every time I showered I had a mess to clean up outside the tub. Then I found this item ... This baby isn't "water repellent," it's right down waterproof! Not one drop of water came through to the other side. I immediately hung it and realized it's not only waterproof, but it's beautiful as well ...This one curtain takes the place of two!"

Pros: Comes in three stylish colors, water repellent, easy care

Cons: Only available in one size

An inside look at the career of Carlos Ghosn, the disgraced former Nissan chairman and Renault CEO who just posted $8.9 million bail after 108 days in a Japanese jail

  • Carlos Ghosn, the former Nissan chairman and Renault CEO, paid one of the largest bail fees in the history of Japan — 1 billion yen, or $8.9 million — to leave jail on March 6 after 108 days.
  • Back in November, the former CEO was accused of misreporting his salary and compensation.
  • Ghosn, 64, amassed a $120 million net worth while he was the head-ranking official at the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi Motors automotive alliance over the past two decades.

Carlos Ghosn's rise as chairman of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance took years. His fall? Quicker, and greater, than any other industry executive with his caliber.

For a long time, Ghosn was known as the man who was able to usher in a new era of profitability and relevance to the automakers he helmed. Yet, to Japanese persecutors, he hid his earnings from regulators for years and used company funds to further decorate his lavish lifestyle.

On November 19, 2018, he was arrested, and on Wednesday, he was released after over three months in a Japanese jail. He has since retreated with his restricted freedom to a pre-approved residence to await a trial that remains months away.

Prosecutors in Japan have alleged that Ghosn earned a salary of about 10 billion yen, or $88.7 million, from 2011 to 2015 but reported only half of that. Ghosn, 64, could face up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to 10 million yen if found to have committed any wrongdoing.

Michael Cohen's lawyer appears to contradict his congressional testimony, says Cohen 'directed' his attorneys to explore possible pardon from Trump

Scott Applewhite)

  • Michael Cohen's lawyer appeared to contradict his testimony to the House Oversight Committee on Thursday.
  • Cohen told the panel, "I have never asked for, nor would I accept, a pardon from [President Donald Trump]."
  • But Cohen's lawyer, Lanny Davis, said in a statement to reporters that Cohen "directed" one of his lawyers to explore the possibility of a presidential pardon, and that he was "open to the ongoing 'dangling' of a possible pardon" by Trump's representatives.

Lanny Davis, an attorney representing Michael Cohen, told reporters Cohen "directed" one of his lawyers last year to explore the possibility of a presidential pardon. At the time, Cohen was at the center of a growing criminal investigation into his and President Donald Trump's financial dealings before the 2016 election.

"Prior to Michael Cohen’s decision to leave the 'Joint Defense Group' and tell the truth on July 2, 2018 Michael was open to the ongoing 'dangling' of a possible pardon by Trump representatives privately and in the media," Davis said in a statement to The New York Times on Thursday.

"During that time period, he directed his attorney to explore possibilities of a pardon at one point with Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani as well as other lawyers advising President Trump," the statement continued.

"But after July 2, 2018, Mr. Cohen authorized me as a new lawyer to say publicly Mr. Cohen would never accept a pardon from President Trump even if offered. That continues to be the case. And his statement at the Oversight Hearing was true — and consistent with his post joint defense agreement commitment to tell the truth," the statement said.

Davis' acknowledgement that Cohen at one point sought a pardon appears to contradict his testimony to the House Oversight Committee last month, during which he told lawmakers, "I have never asked for, nor would I accept, a pardon from Mr. Trump."

Cohen pleaded guilty to several counts of tax evasion, bank fraud, and campaign-finance violations as part of a Manhattan US attorney's office investigation into hush-money payments Cohen facilitated during the 2016 campaign to women who claim to have had affairs with Trump. He also pleaded guilty to one count of lying to Congress as part of the special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

Both Democrats and Republicans on the House Oversight Committee warned that they would refer Cohen to the Justice Department for criminal charges if it emerged that he misled lawmakers during his congressional testimony last month.

Republican Reps. Mark Meadows and Jim Jordan have already made one such criminal referral and urged the Justice Department to investigate Cohen's statements, including his contention that he never wanted to work in the White House.

Jordan and Meadows said in a statement that they have proof Cohen "committed perjury and knowingly made false statements."

  • Clothing rental company Rent the Runway and home brand West Elm are partnering to offer home textile rentals on the Rent the Runway website.
  • Rent the Runway members will be able to slot in one of 26 exclusive bundles of pillows, throws, shams, and more to their existing RTR Update or RTR Unlimited subscriptions
  • Just like the current rental subscriptions allow members to discover and experiment with clothing styles in a more sustainable, affordable way, this West Elm offering is a new way to shop efficiently for the home.

In a move that will extend the concept of "dynamic ownership" to the home, clothing rental company Rent the Runway and home brand West Elm announced a partnership today to offer textile bundles through Rent the Runway's online platform.

Starting in the summer, Rent the Runway members will be able to choose from 26 exclusive bundles of decorative pillows, throws, shams, quilts, and coverlets to refresh two areas of the home where they spend the most time, the living room and the bedroom.

The partnership marks a first for both companies: the first time West Elm is making its products available for rent, and the first time Rent the Runway is offering rentals beyond clothing and accessories.

rent the runway west elm news

For 10 years, Rent the Runway, named one of the most disruptive companies in the world in 2018, has been helping women update their closets with designer clothing and dress for special occasions, work, and everyday life— without the commitment, cost, and waste of buying these pieces.

It offers two different membership plans, RTR Update ($69-$89/month) and RTR Unlimited ($99-$159/month), which now collectively boast nine million members.

RTR Update lets you rent four items a month, with one swap per month, while RTR Unlimited lets you rent four items a month on constant rotation, with unlimited swaps per month. With this new West Elm collaboration, members will be able to rent the textile bundles as one of their rotating spots.

Bedroom bundles will include a mix of a quilt, coverlet, throw or blanket, shams, and decorative pillows to decorate the bed. Living room bundles will pair decorative pillows with each other or with a throw.

rent the runway west elm news 3

Rather than turn home accessories into an entirely different subscription, Rent the Runway COO Maureen Sullivan says the company wanted to make the process as simple as possible by incorporating it into existing RTR subscriptions.

"Time is the most precious object and commodity for our members," she explains.

Like shopping for clothing, shopping for the home is rarely a quick and easy endeavor. By offering curated, stylish bundles from a well-established and respected home brand, the company is once again able to make reflecting your personal style a seamless, efficient process.

West Elm in particular is a smart fit for this partnership because of its own commitment to sustainable, stylish living. It designs the majority of its items in-house, allowing it to control its offering of organic, sustainably sourced, and Fair Trade Certified products. In 2014, it became the first-ever US home retailer to offer Fair Trade Certified products. By 2020, 100% of all the cotton in its bedding will be organic, while 50% of its wood will be sustainably sourced.

rent the runway west elm news 4

When we asked Sullivan for predictions about which bundles might perform the best, she wasn't able to say, referencing as an example the phenomenon of Rent the Runway's clothing subscriptions. For clothing, members try anything and everything, with no clear patterns of trial, and the same will probably be true for the new West Elm home rentals.

She says, "The magic of rental is that you feel unconstrained by the burden of ownership." Because you know you're not making a forever purchase, you're more willing and likely to try something out of your comfort zone.

The idea that one day we may not own anything in our closets and homes can be difficult to come to terms with. So far, however, it seems that shoppers are receptive to the idea. This upcoming partnership between Rent the Runway and West Elm puts us one step closer to an ownership-free reality.

The best hand cream for dry, chapped hands

Insider Picks writes about products and services to help you navigate when shopping online. Insider Inc. receives a commission from our affiliate partners when you buy through our links, but our reporting and recommendations are always independent and objective.

best hand cream for dry hands

  • When it comes to dry, irritated, and chapped skin, fast-acting and effective moisture is important.
  • O’Keeffe’s Working Hands Hand Cream delivers relief and lasting moisture, making it our top pick, hands down.

Winters can be harsh all-around, but the dry, cracked skin that the winter weather brings makes the season particularly difficult to cope with. When your hands are dry and chapped, doing simple chores like washing the dishes can be painful and irritating. Unfortunately, you can go through dozens of products before you find the right cream to help heal and prevent chapped hands. That’s why we’ve done the work for you.

I’m no stranger to dry, chapped hands. I have horses at home, which means I’m outside at least four or five times each day, even in the harshest of winter weather. I also wash my hands frequently, which only makes the problem worse. Because of my dry skin, I’ve accumulated a significant collection of lotions and hand creams. Many of them didn’t solve the problem — but some of them did.

The products in this guide are intended for anyone who deals with dry skin in the winter or even year-round. I’ve used many of them myself, and tried to select products that aren’t heavily scented, greasy, or that require frequent applications throughout the day.

To get the best results from these products, apply them according to the brand's directions. Using these products after washing your hands or showering can get you positive results, and try to make a habit of using your lotion or hand cream before bed for overnight moisturizing.

Here are the best hand creams for dry, chapped hands:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best hand cream for dry, chapped hands overall

Why you’ll love it: O’Keeffe’s Working Hands Hand Cream offers healing and protective properties in a greaseless formula.

For valuable healing paired with protective properties, you can’t go wrong with O’Keeffe’s Working Hands Hand Cream. This hand cream is designed to heal, relieve, and repair extremely dry, cracked hands.

This cream contains paraffin, which helps to establish a barrier that protects your skin from losing water. At the same time, glycerin draws moisture to your skin in order to accelerate the hydration process. The cream is greaseless, yet effectively reduces the rate of evaporation on your hands, helping to restore your hands’ moisture balance while healing your cracked, irritated skin.

Available in both a jar and in a tube, this hand cream is scentless, so you can put it on before leaving the house and no one will know. It’s recommended that you use it multiple times a day, which is easy to do because the cream absorbs so easily into your hands.

The rim of the jar is textured for extra grip, but I’ve found I’ve never needed that texture because the cream doesn’t leave my hands greasy. I have personally had excellent results using this product, and I make a point of applying it after coming in from the barn, before bed, and always after shoveling snow.

O’Keeffe’s Working Hands Hand Cream has a 4.5 out of 5-star rating on Amazon, based on 9,196 reviews.

Bob Duncan of Scrollsaw Woodworking & Crafts attests to the value that this hand cream offers woodworkers, writing, “The salve is the consistency of cold hard butter and it literally melts into your skin. Within a few seconds, the dry skin stops itching and burning, and you can go back to work without worrying about wood or tools slipping out of your grip.”

ToolGuyd also posted a favorable review of this hand cream, writing, “It does relieve dryness. I have only used it a few times and once overnight, but I can definitely tell that it’s working.”

This cream is safe for diabetics to use, and it’s affordable enough to keep a jar in your home, your workplace, and anywhere else where you need protective and healing relief.

Pros: Greaseless, odorless, highly affordable

Cons: Can sting a bit when applied to cracked hands

Buy O’Keeffe’s Working Hands Hand Cream on Amazon for $7.29

The best lotion for soothing relief

Why you’ll love it: Formulated for very rough, dry skin, Eucerin Intensive Repair Lotion both gently exfoliates and conditions for healthier skin.

Eucerin Intensive Repair Lotion is a rich, creamy lotion that has long-lasting effects. The triple-acting formula moisturizes, exfoliates, and conditions in order to repair rough, dry skin. The gentle exfoliating nature helps to improve the appearance of dry or rough skin, and the moisturizer offers intense hydration that helps to create smooth, comfortable skin. This fragrance-free formula won’t clog pores.

This is one of my favorite lotions. The pump bottle is quick and easy to use when you’re on the go, and this formula provides soothing relief, even when my hands are at their worst. I particularly like that this lotion is unscented, and it’s easy to massage into my hands.

There is a bit of a film left on my hands after use, but wiping my hands off with a tissue solves the issue. This lotion is versatile, too, and you can use it on your hands, feet, arms, and other problem areas.

Eucerin Intensive Repair Enriched Lotion has a 4.3 out of 5-star rating on Amazon, based on 726 reviews.

Sandy N. wrote, “This lotion is heaven sent! I get very dry skin during the winter to the point of rashes, itching, burning, you name it. This lotion has saved my skin. It's very thick, so I usually apply at night, but it moisturizes like no other lotion I've tried.”

According to Eduardo Neecha, “This Eucerin lotion worked wonders almost immediately —the itching seemed to vanish on contact, and the morning after my first application of it, at least 80% of the redness was gone!”

Pros: Fragrance-free, gentle exfoliating action, won’t clog pores, use on hands, feet, and more

Cons: May increase skin’s sensitivity to the sun and increase the chance of sunburn

Buy Eucerin Intensive Repair Enriched Lotion on Amazon for $9.97

The best organic lotion for dry, chapped hands

Why you’ll love it: Certified organic and available in nine different scents, The Naked Bee Moisturizing Hand & Body Lotion softens and hydrates your skin.

You can choose from delicious scents like the Orange Blossom Honey, Chai Tea, Coconut & Honey, Grapefruit Blossom Honey, and more. There are no dyes or pigment in this lotion.

While the ingredients in this lotion have been carefully selected for their healing and moisturizing effects, the ingredients you won’t find in this lotion are just as important. The Naked Bee makes products without parabens, propylene glycol, mineral oil, or laureth sulfate. Additionally, this company never tests its products on animals.

The Naked Bee Moisturizing Hand & Body Lotion has a 4.2 out of 5-star Amazon rating, based on 2,080 customer reviews.

Amazon reviewer Christine O. wrote, “I am a huge fan of Naked Bee hand and body lotion. This Lavendar hand lotion is rich enough to moisturize but absorbs nicely into your skin...not greasy. This is a true lavendar scent that is light and very pleasant.”

Another Amazon reviewer found this lotion to be the perfect solution for sensitive skin: “LOVE this hand lotion. I love scented lotions but am very sensitive to synthetic fragrance...this product is natural and smells amazing. I have no issues with it. It also absorbs well and doesn't stay greasy.”

Pros: Available in multiple scents, certified organic, made in the USA

Cons: Some scents are more potent than others

We drove a $49,000 Honda Pilot to see how the new family SUV stacks up against rivals from Toyota and Ford. Here's the verdict.

Honda Pilot Elite 2019

  • For Honda, the stalwart Accord and Civic sedans have for decades delivered reliable sales and helped the company profit year after year.
  • But with the meteoric rise of SUVs in recent years, Honda now depends more and more on crossover utes like the mid-size Pilot.
  • The three-row, mid-size Honda Pilot is updated for the 2019 model year with fresh styling, a more refined drivetrain, and new tech.
  • In the marketplace, the Pilot competes with the Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, Subaru Ascent, Nissan Pathfinder, and Volkswagen Atlas
  • All Pilots are powered by a 3.5-liter, 280 horsepower V6 engine mated to either a six-speed or a nine-speed automatic transmission.
  • The base 2019 Honda Pilot LX with front-wheel drive starts at $31,450. Our top-of-the-line all-wheel-drive Elite trim test car starts at $48,020. A $995 destination and handling fee pushed the as-tested price to $49,015.

For decades, Honda has depended on its stalwart Accord and Civic sedans to deliver not only sales volume but also profits.

The automotive landscape has changed drastically in recent years. Crossover SUVs are now king of the showroom.  For Honda, it's the CR-V compact crossover.

The Civic and Accord remain Honda's second and third best sellers in the US with 326,000 and 291,000 units respectively left showrooms in 2018. But those figures are down 13.7% and 9.8% respectively compared to 2017.

Fortunately for the Japanese auto giant, sales of its fourth most popular offering, the mid-size Pilot crossover SUV, surged 25% last year to just under 160,000 sold.

According to data from Kelly Blue Book, the Pilot is the third best-selling three-row mid-size SUV in the US behind only the Toyota Highlander and the segment leader Ford Explorer.

Read more: We drove a $42,000 and a $50,000 Toyota Highlander to see why it's one of the best family SUVs money can buy — here's what we discovered.

The current third-generation Pilot has been around since 2016. However, Honda decided to give the Lincoln, Alabama-built family hauler a mid-life refresh for the 2019 model year.

Recently, Business Insider had the chance to spend a week with a 2019 Honda Pilot AWD Elite to see how the updated crossover stacks up to the competition.

The base 2019 Honda Pilot LX with front-wheel drive starts at $31,450. Our top-of-the-line all-wheel-drive Elite trim test car starts at $48,020. A $995 destination and handling fee pushed the as-tested price to $49,015.

The best part of my 14-hour, $5,400 Emirates business-class flight was a perk I originally thought was a gimmick

$

a380 airbus emirates

  • I recently flew in business class for the first time in my life.
  • It was on a 14-hour flight from Dubai to New York operated by Emirates on the Airbus A380 superjumbo, the largest and most expensive commercial airliner in history.
  • While there were a lot of perks that blew me away — including the chauffeur service and the extravagant preflight lounge— the A380's in-flight cocktail bar gave the flight a feel entirely unlike what I've experienced.
  • Rather than be stuck alone in my seat, I opted to hang out at the bar for a few hours, getting to know other passengers and flight attendants — and getting a drink or snack at my leisure.

For many travel junkies, flying in business class on an Airbus A380 operated by Emirates is considered the crème de la crème of flight experiences.

Until last month, I'd never flown in business class before; it never made sense for my budget.

But then, thanks to Airbus' announcement that in 2021 it will stop producing the A380, the world's largest and most expensive passenger plane, my editors thought I had to try flying back to New York in business class on an Emirates A380, for $5,400.

Read more:I flew 14 hours in business class on the soon-to-be-extinct Emirates A380, the world's largest airliner — and it was more luxurious than I could have imagined

I didn't know what to expect. I'd had an excellent experience flying Emirates in economy class to Dubai in November, but I'd heard mixed reviews about business class. I was worried that all it would mean was a slightly bigger seat and better airplane food.

I was very wrong. While Emirates' business class blew my mind for many reasons — the food, the lounge, and the pod-like seats among them — my favorite part was the plane's famous walk-up cocktail lounge.

Best_Business_Class_Flight_Emirates_Airbus_A380 (154 of 198)

I had heard about the lounge, as many travel experts and frequent fliers consider it the centerpiece of the Emirates business-class experience. But I was skeptical.

I kept wondering: Does anyone actually use it, or is it a gimmick that looks better in a travel magazine?

I got my first taste of the cocktail lounge a few hours after takeoff. Dinner was over, and I was looking for a sweet snack to eat while I watched a TV show.

One of the best parts about the lounge is that it's stocked with fresh fruits, sandwiches, pastries, chips, and other goodies you can grab at your leisure. I took a bag of cherries and a bottle of water and went back to my seat.

Best_Business_Class_Flight_Emirates_Airbus_A380 (156 of 198)

The convenience was great, but it was how much fun the lounge was that showed me what a game-changer it is for travel.

Throughout the flight — and I was on a red-eye — there were always a few passengers there chatting or, more often, talking with the staff.

After sleeping for a few hours, I went into the lounge to stretch my legs and found a group of passengers drinking at the bar and having a conversation with the flight attendant/bartender. I had intended to grab a water bottle and head back to my seat. Instead, I spent three hours hanging out there with passengers and flight attendants.

The flight attendants told us about the worst passengers they've had to deal with, wild things that have happened on board, and what they like to do in their free time. The other passengers and I shared stories from our travels and recommendations for New York and Dubai, and got to know one another.

Halfway through, the bartender mixed an experimental drink at my request, turning the cucumber-fizz mocktail into an alcoholic drink. It was delicious.

A passenger I met told me about how on his flight to Dubai a few weeks before, he and a half-dozen others hung out in the lounge during the Super Bowl, cheering on their team as they used the airplane WiFi to get updates on the score. It sounded like a blast.

As I left the plane the following morning, I was still amazed at how much fun my flight had been. An open social space creates a totally different atmosphere for the passengers and, I imagine, the staff.

The next time you think about splurging on a business-class flight, look for an airline with an onboard lounge — Emirates is far from the only one.

  • Spring is almost here, which means its a great time to get a head start on cleaning out your home.
  • If you're not sure where to begin, the kitchen is a good place to start. There are plenty of little tweaks you can make to create a more organized space instead of doing a complete overhaul.
  • The Container Store is having a sale on kitchen and pantry essentials for 25% off, making it a little more affordable to tackle the mess that is your pasta shelf or your unruly collection of spices.

Is there anything more beautiful than a perfectly organized kitchen? Instagram accounts of color-coordinated refrigerators and pantries filled with labeled boxes that fit together like puzzle pieces offer some serious organization inspiration (and envy). For most of us, though, life gets in the way — and our kitchens end up looking more "lived-in" than "Insta-worthy."

If you're not the particularly tidy type, not all hope is lost. Sprucing up your kitchen can be as easy as making a few little tweaks to your space. With the official start of spring just a few days away, there's no better time than now to treat yourself to some simple organizational tools to get your kitchen in shipshape — in the name of spring cleaning, of course.

We'd be remiss to talk about tidying up without mentioning that the epicenter of organization, The Container Store, is having a big sale right now. If you're looking to get a head start on spring cleaning, or are ready to finally attempt to organize the kitchen, The Container Store can help you out. What every 2020 presidential candidate has said about vaccines

FILE - This Feb. 6, 2015, file photo shows a measles, mumps and rubella vaccine on a countertop at a pediatrics clinic in Greenbrae, Calif. The U.S. has counted more measles cases in the first two months of this year than in all of 2017 _ and part of the rising threat is misinformation that makes some parents balk at a crucial vaccine, federal health officials told Congress Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2019 .(AP Photo/Eric Risberg, File)

  • As a result of more parents forgoing vaccines for their children, the highly contagious measles virus made a comeback in 2018, with 200 confirmed cases around the country.
  • Experts say that pervasive internet misinformation around vaccine safety has led to "hot pockets" of areas where kids are growing up unvaccinated.
  • Healthcare, including big public health issues, will be at the forefront of the 2020 election.
  • In 2016, President Donald Trump falsely claimed that vaccines are linked to autism on multiple occasions.
  • Here's what all the 2020 presidential candidates have said about vaccines.

The measles vaccine was introduced in the 1960s and US government declared measles eradicated in 2000. But the highly contagious disease made a comeback in the winter of 2018, with nearly 200 confirmed cases reported across the country

The state of Washington declared a state of emergency earlier this year after 65 people in the state contracted the disease — with 47 of them young children under the age of 10 who had not been vaccinated.

Despite the broad scientific consensus that vaccines are safe and effective, as well as the dozens of studies discrediting any link between vaccines and autism, misinformation about vaccine safety abounds on the internet — and experts say it's leading to an increase in kids in places like Washington going without their shots.

Read more: From autism risks to mercury poisoning, here are 10 lies anti-vaxxers are spreading about the measles vaccine in the Pacific Northwest

An exhaustive new study of 650,000 Danish children again thoroughly disproved the validity of the connections between the measles vaccines and autism, but scientists worry that the anti-vax movement growing stronger over time means "we now live in a 'fact-resistant' world where data have limited persuasive value."

On March 4, Ohio teenager Ethan Lindenberger, who began getting vaccines against his mother's wishes after he turned 18, appeared before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions to testify to the importance of vaccination and the impact the pervasive misinformation on Facebook had on his mother.

“I feel like if my mom didn’t interact with that information, and she wasn’t swayed by those arguments and stories, it could’ve potentially changed everything,” he told the Washington Post. “My entire family could’ve been vaccinated.”

Healthcare, including big public health issues, will be at the forefront of the 2020 election.

In 2016, President Donald Trump falsely claimed that vaccines are linked to autism on multiple occasions.

Here's where all the 2020 presidential candidates stand on vaccines with the exception of Sen. Cory Booker and  Julian Castro, who have not made recent public statements on the issue and did not return INSIDER's requests for comment.

Over the years, President Donald Trump has repeatedly promoted baseless and disproven claims that vaccines are linked to autism — and named vaccine conspiracist Robert Kennedy Jr. to chair a government panel on vaccine safety,

"Healthy young child goes to doctor, gets pumped with massive shot of many vaccines, doesn't feel good and changes - AUTISM. Many such cases!" Trump claimed without evidence in 2014.

"When the polio and measles vaccines became available for the first time, parents lined up to make sure their kids would be protected," Warren said at a congressional hearing in 2015. "They'd lived in a world of infectious diseases that destroyed children's futures, and they desperately wanted to leave that world behind."

While Kamala Harris was California's attorney general, her office defended the legality of a law that requires children to be vaccinated in order to attend both public and private schools.

10 things your car mechanic won't tell you

$

mechanic

  • Everybody needs a trustworthy auto mechanic with all the required professional certifications to keep a car in tip-top shape.
  • But there are some things mechanics avoid telling customers.
  • It never hurts to be educated when dealing with car mechanics.

Unless your car is brand new and under warranty, it's likely to need some maintenance during a given year. This could range from minor stuff, such as a routine oil change, to deeper dish repairs.

Most car mechanics — independent or employed by a dealer or repair chain — are ethical people who won't steer you toward needless work. But they might also insist that you hire them to perform maintenance that isn't entirely necessary.

Their arguments are sound: Why wait until a small problem becomes a big one?

But it's also your money, and you should know about the things your mechanic will never tell you.

For the record, I had a mechanic in Los Angeles for years who was a model of being up front about what absolutely needed to be fixed on my cars — and what could wait, or even be ignored. But such a mechanic is quite rare. So the best thing you can do is educate yourself.

Here are ten tips about what even the best mechanic might not tell you:

FOLLOW US: On Facebook for more car and transportation content!

1. You can change your oil yourself.

An oil change is to a skilled mechanic what making brunch omelettes is to a talented chef — something of an insult. That said, oil changes are the most common maintenance need for cars. You can buy an oil-change kit at an auto parts store for less than $40, while having a mechanic do it will run you around $75 (yes, I know some shops are much cheaper, but I don't think you should expect a mechanic to do the dirty work effectively for free just to keep your business).

Oil changes are easy money for repair shops and dealers, so not only will they steer you toward them, they'll endorse the "every 3,000 miles" standard, even though modern oil can last much longer, with some synthetics requiring a change ever 10,000-20,000 miles.

You CAN stick to the tighter schedule — and to be honest, fastidious oil changes in certain cars can help with resale value down the road, as some buyers want records to fussy prior ownership.

However, in my book, if you don't mind getting dirty and having to deal with disposing of the used oil, an oil change twice a year is the classic DIY option.

2. You can probably ignore that check engine light for now (unless it's flashing)

The check engine light strikes fear in the hearts of inexperienced owners, but it usually just indicates a non-serious problem with the vehicle's exhaust system.

In many cases, you can ignore it, unless you have a very old car whose emission components could be wearing out.

You can't ignore it forever; a trip to mechanic is warranted at some point. But you car isn't going to blow up if you wait.

There is one exception to this guideline: if the check engine light is flashing, you need to get to your mechanic as soon as possible.

3. You should do your own brake job.

Once you start changing your own oil, you might think about doing your own brake jobs. This is one that mechanics often don't like talking about, because changing brake pads and rotors for them is like printing money. It's easy to do, but it takes while, so the labor costs bring in serious coin.

You can do it yourself, but it's both tricky and dirty — not to mention a bit exhausting if you don't have a repair-shop hydraulic lift. Using a jack, it will consumer several hours, and that's if you don't encounter any problems and are dealing only with swapping worn brake pads.

Do it once, however, and you might do it yourself forever.

In case you missed it, Amazon recently eclipsed traditional retailers in a section of once-hallowed ground: wedding registries. Ranking higher than Macy's and even ahead of fresher faces like Zola, Amazon is now considered the most popular wedding registry site in the country. It's already where as much as 75% of US online shoppers buy holiday gifts — so it's not exactly surprising the trend has reached soon-to-be newlyweds.

It also has a cornucopia of perks. An Amazon Wedding Registry means you can register for pretty much anything — from camping tents to board games to champagne glasses — all in one spot. It has the world's largest selection, and all eligible gifts will get fast and free two-day shipping. Unlike many brands with only a couple national warehouses, Amazon has 140 fulfillment centers in over 29 states so no matter where you are, you'll likely be able to get your gift delivered in two days or less. In case you don't love it, you'll have 180 days to return gifts.

Guests can also "group gift" items with a higher price tag. Once you enable Group Gifts on one or more items in your Amazon Wedding Registry, guests will be able to see the amount already contributed as well as the remaining contribution amount available. You can even add personal notes, pictures, and highlights on the items you love so that guests have a better idea of why you picked something.

You can also save up to 20% off in a "special completion discount" on any items left on your registry that you still want to buy, and Amazon will keep a running list of who purchased which gift so you can easily send out thank you messages after the wedding.

But Amazon's intense variety can also be a hurdle to curating a useful, pared-down list of the essentials needed for married life. Below, you'll find 30 of the best options to consider as a jumping-off point.

Start your Amazon Wedding Registry here. Find suggestions for it below:

The two separate compartments make sorting and disposing of trash and recyclables easy, and the built-in bag dispenser ensures that you can simply replace the garbage bag without rummaging around your kitchen for more of them.
