  • An apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan is on the market for $3.5 million, after selling for around $2 million in 2015.
  • Since then, the 3-bedroom, 2.5-bath apartment has received a major upgrade and is now almost unrecognizable.
  • The renovations totaled around $1 million and took almost a year to complete; here's a look at the before and after photos.

If you've ever wondered what kind of effect a $1 million renovation has on an apartment, look no further.

A Manhattan apartment that closed in June of 2015 for around $2 million is back on the market for $3.5 million. Since then, the apartment has been completely redone, totaling over $1 million in renovation costs and almost a year of work.

The three-bedroom apartment is managed by Warburg Realty, and is listed for $3,595,000. It is located at 130 East 67th Street, just three blocks from Central Park. It is also located near several art galleries, along with luxury shops such as Kate Spade and Michael Kors.

The outdated kitchen layout, in particular, was rendered nearly unrecognizable by the renovations. Marble countertops now replace granite, and every room in the apartment received a new coat of paint.

Keep reading for a look at what this apartment looked like before and after its $1 million face-lift.

These new 'invisible' acne patches are thin enough to wear in public — and they clear my acne in just 6 hours

Mighty%20Patch%20Invisible%203

  • The Mighty Patch is the best overnight acne solution I've tried in a decade-long search.
  • It's a Hydrocolloid patch that acts as a magnet for the gunk inside a blemish, best worn overnight.
  • It also reduces exposure to germs, and is alcohol-, paraben-, and sulfate-free. Once the patch is removed, blemishes are drastically less severe.
  • The new Invisible+ Mighty Patch ($17.99, 39-count) is an ultra-thin iteration designed so you can wear them during the daytime.
  • All in all, they are less conspicuous, but people will probably still notice if they're prominently featured. If you plan on wearing them out in public, though, they're worth buying.

If you've dealt with acne before, somebody (or some company) has probably offered you the skin-care equivalent of "magic beans" before: an affordable acne solution that zaps away blemishes overnight. That means that every cursed pimple that shows up right before a big interview, night out, first nerve-racking date, or big beach vacation could be dealt with, damage blessedly erased, before it could really make any difference.

Like a mini Indiana Jones, I spent most of my pre-teen years engaged in a sprawling search for exactly this. I read the beauty articles, stalked the CVS aisles, and spent my minimum wage earnings on products that promised to be the next big thing. And while some were decently effective, none came within throwing distance of working overnight. Spot correctors like Mario Badescu’s famous Drying Lotion helped me recover faster, but it was still days at a time. Discovering an affordable version of Differin in my mid-twenties helped me manage surface-level bumps within two days. And a chance discovery of this cult-favorite Aztec Clay Mask with over 11, 000 five-star reviews has helped me stop most breakouts before they happen.

But that still leaves the only kind of pimples I really cared about anyway — the ones that were a bit more severe than a light, surface-level irritation, and which you’d probably see someone’s eyes wander to in a conversation.

That's what I swear by Mighty Patch for, which I bought immediately. after reading this Insider Picks review.

To be concise, Mighty Patch is simply the best fast acne solution I've ever found. They're Hydrocolloid stickers that suck the gunk out of blemishes overnight (or, as we'll get into later, during the day) if left on top of the blemish for a minimum of six hours. Originally used to treat wounds, hydrocolloid is a super-absorbent material now being put to use in gentle acne treatments — first in South Korea, where Hero Cosmetics' CEO and Co-Founder Ju Rhyu discovered them, and now in the US thanks in part to Rhyu's startup.

I put a Mighty Patch on at night before bed and wake up to a blemish that seems to have skipped three days of healing; it's not inflamed or raised, and it no longer appears to be active. They're gentle (vegan, alcohol-, paraben-, and sulfate-free), simple, and keep the germs from the outside world and your wandering hands away so blemishes can heal and stay healed. It's my personal "magic beans" product.

And now, Hero Cosmetics has released a Mighty Patch that can be worn during the day: the Invisible+ patches. They're transparent, ultra-thin, matte to avoid reflecting light, and have tapered edges that blend seamlessly into the skin (find comparative photos below). Now, you can treat pimples in as little as six hours, no matter when they appear — no waiting for the cloak of night to get down to business.

How to use Invisible+ Mighty Patches

Cleanse the skin, pat it dry, and apply the mighty patch on top of your blemish. Leave it on for a minimum of six hours, either during the day or overnight if you choose. Remove it to throw away once the patch has turned opaque (aka sucked up all the impurities from that spot of your skin).

What the Invisible+ Mighty Patches are like in person

The Invisible+ Mighty Patches are the same technology as the originals, but much less conspicuous. They're thinner, more transparent (the originals have a yellowish hue) and matte so they don't catch and reflect light. They have tapered edges to help the patch blend more seamlessly into the skin. If you wear them during the day, you can add a bit of concealer on top to camouflage it effectively and avoid makeup being absorbed into the blemish.

If the Invisible+ patch is prominently featured (i.e. smack dab in the middle of your face), though, it's not going to magically look like skin close up. Having said that, though, it's preferable to me between making things worse with just concealer and going sans anything at all. And it'll likely go unnoticed in casual interactions — perfect for doing damage control on a surprise breakout while traveling, beach days, running errands, before a big job interview or date, or pretty much any other time. I've used them last-minute to address a surprise blemish in the morning and afternoon so I could go out with clear skin at night.

Plus, the box includes two size options, so you can opt for a smaller patch for less severe blemishes. And, given their cult status, most people won't know what they are, and they're more likely to assume it's got more to do with a bandage than an active acne solution. But, ultimately, it's also good to note that it's not the end of the word even if someone does notice: as Hero Cosmetics' CEO Ju Rhyu, reminded me, "over 60 million Americans suffer from acne at some point so even though we hate it when we break out, it's a fairly normal thing." More often than not, we're all in the same boat.

My one cautionary note is to check them more frequently while you're out in the daylight if you don't dab concealer on top — once they turn opaque, they're much more noticeable, and you'll probably want to take it off.

Price

A one-time purchase is $17.99 for 39 patches on Hero Cosmetics and Amazon. Or, you can go with a subscription (opting for a box every 30, 45, or 60 days) and save 10% [You pay $16.99].

The Mighty Patch isn't as cheap as some of our other favorite acne solutions, but it is worth the extra money. It's gentle on the skin, relatively inconspicuous (as opposed to spot solutions), and it dwarfs blemishes overnight.

How to get free boxes or store credit

You may end up buying them on Amazon, but Hero Cosmetics also has a loyalty program with perks that you can join. Sign up with an email, and if you spend $1, you get 1 point. After 75 points, you’ll get a free box of the originals, or $13 credit. With 150 points, you get one box of the originals and one of the Invisible+ or $31 dollars credit. If you’d rather earn points faster, refer a friend and earn 20 at once.

The bottom line

All in all, the Invisible+ are a bit less conspicuous than the originals, most so when they're first applied. However, if they're working, both the originals and the Invisible+ will eventually turn opaque and be far easier to spot — though, for what it's worth, the thinness of the Invisible+ is still less noticeable overall. For instance, having used both, I wouldn't wear the Mighty Patch Original out in public because of their thickness and color. I would, however, wear the Invisible+ in public if I thought I could get away with it based on the location of my acne.

Depending on your comfort level and where you need it (side of the face, chin, forehead underneath a baseball cap, etc.) and where you're going (beach, airplane, running errands) the still-there visibility may not matter anyway. Either way you break it down, the fact remains: the efficacy of the Mighty Patch is worth it. The added subtlety of the Invisible+ is worth it if you plan to wear them during the day or out in public.

Buy Mighty Patch Invisible+ on Hero Cosmetics and Amazon, $17.99

Southwest Airlines Hawaii

  • Southwest Airlines will start flying to Hawaii on March 17.
  • The airline is holding a two-day sale to commemorate the new flights, with one-way tickets between the US mainland and Hawaii available for as low as $49.
  • Tickets for flights within Hawaii are on sale for as low as $29.
  • All sale tickets, for travel by June 19, must be purchased by 11:59 p.m. PT on Tuesday.

Southwest Airlines is going to Hawaii. The low-cost carrier, based in Dallas, announced last week that it had received approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to start flights to and from Hawaii.

"As we answer the call for Southwest in Hawaii with an initial schedule of service that speaks to a long-held hope of our customers, I applaud and congratulate our people for their steady and impressive work to bring our world-famous hospitality and game-changing value to the Islands," Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly said in a statement.

To commemorate its new Hawaii flights, which start March 17, Southwest launched a two-day fare sale on Monday, with one-way tickets between the US mainland and Hawaii available for as little as $49 and tickets for flights within the state for as low as $29 until Tuesday night.

Southwest Airlines Hawaii flightSouthwest's Hawaii service will launch on March 17 with morning flights from Oakland International Airport to Honolulu. Flights from Oakland to Maui will launch on April 7.

Nonstop service from San Jose International Airport to Honolulu and Maui will start on May 5 and May 26. Flights from Honolulu to Maui and Kona will launch on April 28 and May 12.

You can also fly from Los Angeles International Airport to Honolulu or Maui — with a connection through Oakland — for as little as $88.

All sale tickets, for travel by June 19, must be purchased by 11:59 p.m. PT on Tuesday.

Southwest's generally lower-cost airfares are expected to significantly lower ticket prices for the market for Hawaiian air travel.

"What we found is that a likely 10%+ capacity addition on North American routes at introductory fares from a low-cost carrier may lead to fares that are 30%+ lower versus today," the Morgan Stanley analyst Rajeev Lalwani said in a note last month.

In an 'investigative blitz,' the House Judiciary Committee requested documents from 81 people and entities tied to Trump

  • The House Judiciary Committee began a sprawling investigation into President Donald Trump, his associates, and entities connected to them on Monday.
  • House Judiciary chairman Jerry Nadler sent letters to 81 individuals, organizations, and companies requesting documents connected to the investigation, which will focus on Trump's "obstruction of justice, corruption, and abuse of power."
  • The list featured individuals and agencies linked to the Trump campaign, the Trump Foundation, the White House, the Justice Department, the inaugural committee, the Trump Organization, and dozens of Trump's closest aides and senior campaign officials who were in his orbit while he launched broadsides at top FBI and DOJ officials.
  • One committee aide characterized the document requests to INSIDER as an "investigative blitz."
  • This person added that Democrats want to collect all evidence of wrongdoing in the event that the special counsel Robert Mueller and federal prosecutors in New York are unable to publicize the details of their respective investigations into Trump.

Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee kicked off a wide-ranging probe into President Donald Trump by sending document requests to 81 people and entities tied to the president.

Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York, the chairman of the committee, announced the document requests on Sunday, telling ABC's "This Week" that he wanted to investigate Trump's "obstruction of justice, corruption, and abuse of power."

Nadler's statements came after Michael Cohen, Trump's longtime former lawyer, implicated the president and those around him in criminal conduct during an explosive hearing before the House Oversight Committee last week.

The list of people and entities the committee requested documents from signals the broad nature of their investigation; it included individuals and agencies linked to the Trump campaign, the Trump Foundation, the White House, the Justice Department, the inaugural committee, the Trump Organization, and dozens of Trump's closest aides and senior campaign officials who were in his orbit while he launched broadsides at top FBI and DOJ officials.

One committee aide, who requested anonymity because they are not publicly authorized to divulge details about the probe, characterized it to INSIDER as an "investigative blitz."

This person added that Democrats want to collect all evidence of wrongdoing in the event that the special counsel Robert Mueller and federal prosecutors in New York are unable to publicize the details of their respective investigations into Trump.

Read more:House Judiciary chair Jerry Nadler says he plans to request documents from more than 60 people as part of an investigation into Trump's obstruction, 'corruption, and abuse of power'

Included on the list were people like Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg and Trump's two sons, Eric and Donald Jr. Their inclusion signals that the committee is intent on probing whether Trump violated campaign-finance laws and used the office of the president for personal financial gain.

Several people and organizations connected to the ongoing Russia probe are also named on the list, including Cohen; the former national security adviser Michael Flynn and his defunct lobbying firm, Flynn Intel Group; former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, his spokesperson Jason Maloni, and former associate Rick Gates; and the longtime GOP strategist Roger Stone and his associate Randy Credico.

Committee Democrats zeroed-in on several other companies and entities that have become embroiled in the Russia probe and the Manhattan US attorney's office investigation as well. They include the National Rifle Association, National Enquirer parent company American Media, Inc., WikiLeaks, and the now defunct data firm Cambridge Analytica.

The committee has several broad areas of inquiry it is pursuing, one aide told INSIDER.

Among other things, they plan to investigate the firing of FBI director James Comey; Trump's alleged witness tampering and dangles of pardons; the circumstances surrounding Flynn's resignation and Trump's later efforts to pressure Comey to drop the FBI's investigation into him; Trump's attacks against former attorney general Jeff Sessions following his recusal from the Russia probe; whether Trump violated the Constitution's emoluments clause; whether Trump had foreknowledge of WikiLeaks' planned document dumps during the election and of the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting; and the Trump Organization's push to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.

Sources told Politico that the document requests were signed off on by Mueller's office and other federal prosecutors involved in investigating the president and his associates. There will also be more document requests to come, Politico reported.

Swagbucks has paid over $250 million in rewards to its members — here's how it gets you free money for taking surveys, shopping, and watching videos

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

swagbucks home page

  • Swagbucks is a free service that pays you in cash and gift cards for shopping online and in person, watching videos, taking surveys, donating to charity, searching the web, and playing games online.
  • It's available on desktop, as a browser extension, and an app, providing multiple avenues for you to earn "SB points" wherever you are.
  • Swagbucks has paid hundreds of millions of dollars in rewards to its members, who love how easy the service is to use.
  • There's no catch — the gift cards are to large retailers you shop at regularly and there are more than enough ways to collect SB points.

Having extra pocket change to help you pay for small fix-ups around the house, personal care items, clothing, or simple treat-yourself moments is never a bad thing. Obtaining this extra cash with little to no effort? Even better. Though everyone would love to make more money every month, most of us don't have the time outside of school, work, and other obligations to take on (or find) large paid projects or tasks.

A great low-effort, low-time commitment solution is Swagbucks, a free site, app, and browser extension that gives you cash and gift cards for the things you're already doing every day. Though it launched in February 2008 and has since paid out over $263,716,484 in cash and free gift cards to its members, some people who have never used it might question its legitimacy and ease of use.

However, there are really no annoyingly restrictive catches and the service does exactly what it promises. As long as you abide by some basic guidelines surrounding automation, safety, and appropriate content, you'll be rewarded for your online and in-person shopping, browsing, and viewing activities. For companies, Swagbucks provides a smart way to better understand their shopper base, and to get more eyes on their sales and deals. It's a win-win situation for both parties.

Swagbucks keeps track of all your activity through "SB points." These are all the different ways to earn SB points:

  • Shop online at over 1,500 retailers including Amazon, Walmart, and Target. You'll earn up to 10% cash back (10 SB points per $1), plus get access to exclusive deals and coupons to your favorite retailers. You get points for both printing and redeeming these coupons. If you book travel through popular travel sites like Expedia and Priceline, you'll also get points.

  • Shop in person and eat at restaurants. After you shop in-store and purchase valid products, upload your receipt to the site and you can earn hundreds to thousands of SB points. Through Swagbucks Local, you'll get cash back when you link a credit or debit card and dine at participating establishments in your area.
  • Take short surveys and earn SB points for each one completed. Daily polls are any easy way to earn 1 SB point. The survey section also includes "Tasks," which consist of small editing, transcription, and validation jobs.
  • Watch video playlists that Swagbucks has already put together for you. Playlists are categorized by topics like fashion, food, sports, technology, and politics, so you can watch videos you're actually interested in, or just let them run in the background.

  • Donate to charities like Feeding America, American Red Cross, and Save the Children to earn thousands of SB points.
  • Search the web by making Swagbucks your default search engine and earn points just by searching as you would normally.

  • Play games online to earn 12 SB per every $1 spent on cash entry fees for the game. Popular games include Wheel of Fortune, Angry Birds, Bejeweled, and Trivial Pursuit.

Swagbucks has a browser extension that makes it easier to earn points. Download the SwagButton browser extension to instantly access store coupons and deals, watch videos, and search the web.

Meanwhile, the mobile apps (iOS and Android) let you shop, answer surveys, and watch videos on the go. The app is perfect for long commutes and waits when you're bored and have nothing to do. With Swagbucks, you can be productive with that time and make some money.

swagbutton extension

An additional way to earn points is to refer your friends. Not only will you each earn a 300 SB bonus when they earn 300 SB before the 1st of the following month, but you'll also get 10% of their earnings for life.

Finally, Swag Codes get you instant SB points. They can be found on Swagbucks' social media pages or around the actual site.

Once you've amassed enough points, you'll be able to redeem them for retailer gift cards or cash out on PayPal. Typically, 1,000 SB points equals $10, but the site will also run promotions. For example, right now you can get $25 gift cards to Amazon, Target, Starbucks, Home Depot, and Best Buy for 2,200 SB points.

If you take advantage of all the different ways to earn SB points, which shouldn't take a lot of extra time out of your day, you can get the cash and gift cards you want with little effort. Though Swagbucks won't necessarily give you substantial windfalls of cash (unless you dedicate significant time and effort to the system), it's a nice way to be rewarded for the activities you're doing anyway.

American vs. Delta vs. United — we compared the 3 most popular airline credit cards and named a winner

Personal Finance Insider writes about products, strategies, and tips to help you make smart decisions with your money. Business Insider may receive a commission from The Points Guy Affiliate Network.

Airport credit card

  • If you fly even just a couple times a year, it's worth having an airline credit card.
  • These cards come with perks and benefits that come with these cards, such as free checked bags, priority boarding, or lounge passes, that make flying easier and more enjoyable — and can save you money.
  • We compared some of the most popular mainstream credit cards from the three big US airlines — American, United, and Delta.
  • Read on to see what we found and which one is best for you.

One of the best ways to earn a bunch of frequent flyer miles quickly is to open an airline credit card and earn the new card member bonus.

While a card that earns transferable points — like the Chase Sapphire Preferred— typically has more valuable and flexible rewards than fixed program cards, airline cards win in two respects.

If you generally fly with one preferred airline and earn frequent flyer miles on that program when you travel, it can make sense to earn the same kind of miles from your credit card. Between the mileage earned from both, your miles will add up quicker.

Also, airline credit cards come with various perks specific to that airline that can save you a ton of time and money. Things like complimentary checked bags, priority boarding, and even day passes to airport lounges will have you feeling like you're flying first class even when you're in basic economy.

Each of the three major US airlines (American, Delta, and United) offer a few different credit cards, but among the most popular are the "mainstream" cards. These products have annual fees between $95 and $99 — often waived the first year — and feature benefits that appeal to everyone from casual fliers to road warriors.

While they all have similar features and benefits and all offer a great value to cardholders, we've compared them and found that one stands out above the rest. Read on to see which one it is.

Keep in mind that we're focusing on earning rewards and perks, not things like interest rates and late fees, which can far outweigh the value of any rewards or benefits.

When you're working to earn credit card rewards or take advantage of travel benefits, it's important to practice financial discipline, like paying your balances off in full each month, making payments on time, and not spending more than you can afford to pay back — or spending more than you would otherwise. Basically, treat your credit card like a debit card.

First up is American Airlines: the Citi/AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard.

The Citi/AAdvantage Platinum Select World Elite Mastercard last year announced a few new benefits and positive changes to the card, which makes it a solid contender.

Currently, Citi and American offer a sign-up bonus of 50,000 American Airlines AAdvantage miles when you spend $2,500 in your first three months with the card.

50,000 miles (or at least 52,500, when you factor in the miles you'll earn for completing the minimum spending requirement) can get you far on American Airlines — as long as you can find "SAAver" availability. Based on American Airlines' award chart, it's nearly enough miles for a round-trip flight to Europe or South America during peak season, a one-way ticket to Europe in business class, or at least two domestic round-trips (or more, depending on the distance).

The Citi/AAdvantage Platinum card earns 2x miles per dollar spent on American Airlines purchases. Citi also recently added a few new bonus categories — new card members will earn 2x miles on restaurants and at gas stations, too (existing card members started earning at the new rate in July). You'll earn 1x mile on everything else.

The card comes with a suite of useful benefits for American Airlines flyers.

You and up to four companions traveling on the same reservation each get a free checked bag on domestic flights (since American Airlines is a full-service carrier, most international flights include the first checked bag for free). Because the first checked bag is usually $25 each way, this benefit can save you $50 on a round-trip itinerary.

In addition, you and everyone on your reservation get preferred boarding — joining an earlier boarding zone. That gives you more time to settle in — and earlier access to the overhead bins, so that you can make sure you'll have room to store your bag.

A small, but useful new perk: When you spend $20,000 or more on the card in a card membership year, you'll get a $100 discount on your next American Airlines flight (that's in addition to the miles you'll earn on those purchases).

The card also offers a 25% discount on in-flight purchases, such as food and drinks, and access to discounted mileage award flights. Until recently, cardholders also got 10% of all redeemed miles back each year up to 10,000 miles. However, American recently announced that it was pulling this perk.

The card has a $99 annual fee, which is waived for the first 12 months. It has no foreign transaction fees.

Next is the United Mileage Plus Explorer Card.

The United Explorer Card from Chase is a solid option for United flyers.

The United Explorer card offers 40,000 United miles when you spend $2,000 in the first three months. While the card has occasionally offered higher targeted bonuses, those don't always waive the $95 annual fee for the first year — this current public offer does.

Like the other airlines' sub-$100 cards, the United card offers a free checked bag for the cardholder. Up to two traveling companions booking at the same time can also get a free checked bag each. This is especially useful since United recently raised the price of a checked bag to $30.

Unlike the other airlines' cards, though, you'll have to actually buy the tickets with the United card in order to get the free checked bags — simply having the card open and tied to your account isn't enough.

For those who don't have luggage to check, the card offers priority boarding for everyone on your reservation — you'll get this benefit even if you pay for the tickets with another card. By boarding earlier, you can make sure to snag overhead space for your carry-on.

One excellent perk with the United card is that you'll get two complimentary passes to United Club lounges each year. If you get to the airport early or end up dealing with a delay, you can head to the lounge and enjoy free snacks, drinks, Wi-Fi, and more comfortable seating than what you'd find in the terminal.

When you spend $25,000 in a calendar year, you'll also get a PQD waiver — PQDs, or "Premier Qualifying Dollars," count toward earning elite status with the airline. When that requirement is waived, you'll earn status just based on how much you've flown, rather than a combination of how much you've flown and how much you've spent that year.

The card earns 2x miles per dollar spent on all United purchases, and following the card's rebranding in June, it also earns 2x miles on all dining and hotel spending. It will continue earning 1x mile on everything else. There are no foreign transaction fees.

Other features include a fee credit to cover the cost of enrolling in Global Entry/TSA PreCheck, and a 25% discount on all in-flight United purchases.

One unique — but unpublished — perk of the card is that having it helps you access additional United award space. That means that you'll have an easier time finding the flights you want when it's time to actually use your miles.

Click here to learn more about the United Explorer card from Insider Picks' partner: The Points Guy.

Finally, there's the Gold Delta SkyMiles Card from American Express.

Until April 3, the Gold Delta Amex is offering 60,000 bonus Delta SkyMiles when you spend $2,000 on purchases within the first three months. You'll also get a $50 statement credit if you make any Delta purchase with the card within the first three months. In terms of points, this is the highest-ever public offer on the Gold card.

In addition to the welcome offer, the card comes with a handful of incredibly useful — and valuable — perks.

If you have the card open, you get a free checked bag on Delta flights, as does each other person on your reservation. Delta normally charges $30 for the first checked bag on each flight — so $60 for a round-trip — meaning that for a family of four, the free checked bag benefit could save $240.

The card also offers priority boarding to everyone on the cardholder's reservation. If you aren't checking a bag, that can come in useful — by boarding a little earlier, you'll get better access to the overhead compartments and won't have to worry about space running out.

For those who travel periodically, but not often enough to justify investing in a lounge membership (or getting access to Delta Sky Club lounges through the Amex Platinum Card), the Gold Delta SkyMiles card also offers discounted day passes to Delta's lounges: $29 per person. That can be a useful backup to have in case you ever find yourself with a long layover or a delay.

Other benefits include a 20% discount on in-flight purchases (in the form of a statement credit), such as food or drinks, and no foreign transaction fees.

The card earns 2x Delta SkyMiles on every dollar spent with Delta, and one SkyMile per dollar spent on everything else. The card has an annual fee of $95, which is waived the first year.

While the Gold Delta card is a great option, you may also want to consider the Platinum version (the Platinum Delta SkyMiles® Credit Card from American Express). Although it has a higher annual fee —$195, not waived the first year — it offers a companion pass each year on your cardmember anniversary. Plus, it currently has a welcome offer of 70,000 SkyMiles when you spend $3,000 in the first three months — also until September 19. You can learn more about the companion pass benefit and the Platinum SkyMiles card here.

My wife and I spend $480.40 per month on groceries and cook 95% of our meals — here's exactly what we buy

  • My wife and I love to eat out a few times per month, but still do the majority of our cooking at home.
  • That includes breakfast and lunch for her each day before she goes to work and for myself, who works from home.
  • Here's what we usually buy each week from two Louisiana grocery stores, Rouses and Canseco's, as well as the national chain Winn-Dixie.

I love cooking. My wife loves cooking.

More than almost any other single quality, our mutual love of food and the camaraderie of the kitchen is the thing that brought us together. It's still our favorite space in the house.

We have a line item in our budget for groceries set at $450. We've rarely met that budget, and when we do it’s because the "restaurants" line item has ballooned in unseemly fashion.

Still, we try to cook 95% of our meals at home, including the prepared lunches my wife takes to work, and we largely succeed. But we still average $480.40 per month!

Read more:My family of 4 spends $946 a month on groceries and eats at home for almost every meal — here's exactly what we buy

There isn't a lot of meat on our grocery list, not because we're vegetarian, but because we tend to focus on fish or high-quality meat from the local butcher – which we therefore eat more infrequently because of the expense.

Here's what we buy on a regular basis from the grocery stores nearest to us in New Orleans.

Canseco's – weekly: $37

canseco's

Canseco's is a grocery store with multiple locations in New Orleans. The one we frequent isn't the largest, but the smaller market has the benefit of being a quarter mile from our house, even if it doesn’t always have the best prices. Distance wins out.

Here's what we buy each week:

  • Whole milk – $1.79
  • Unsalted butter – $2.79
  • Salmon fillets – $13.81
  • Yellow onions (3-lb. bag) – $1.79 (these actually are the cheapest onions in town by a wide margin, and yes, I know I'm weird for keeping track)
  • Baby spinach – $2.99
  • Farm House cage free large brown eggs – $3.49
  • Kraft cheddar cheese 8-oz. block – $3.59
  • Bell pepper – $0.99/each

Rouses Markets – weekly: $71

rouses

Rouses is a local Louisiana chain that we've frequented for years. We like that it stocks a lot of very local items in addition to the usual grocery fare:

  • Kellogg's Special K cereal – $3.99
  • La Bonne Vie plain brie – $4.34
  • Lemons (2) – $1.59
  • Red mangoes (4) – $6.00
  • Turnip greens – $2.00
  • Collard greens – $2.00
  • Green cabbage – $2.21
  • Bananas – $1.89
  • Yukon gold potatoes – $0.71
  • Garlic bulb – $0.69
  • Mustard greens – $2.00
  • Red beets – $3.99
  • Frozen gulf shrimp 21/35 – $8.99
  • Cajun fresh sausage – $5.35
  • Smoked sausage – $5.99

Winn-Dixie – 2 to 4 times monthly: $22

winn dixie

What Winn-Dixie lacks in local offerings it makes up for in deals and prices. It's a great store for buy-one, get-one and other deals, so we increasingly go here for our staple non-perishables when our schedules allow:

  • Breyer's chocolate ice cream – $5.49
  • Whole frozen strawberries – $3.50
  • Frozen pineapple chunks – $3.99
  • Mahatma white rice – $3.99
  • Garden rotini – $1.49
  • Bush's reduced sodium black beans – $0.99
  • Avocados (2) – $2.00
  • Flour tortillas medium – $2.49
  • Honeycrisp apples – $2.49/lb.

This $70 gadget brings Alexa into the car — I use it in my 1991 BMW to make calls, navigate, and listen to music hands-free

roav viva pro 4x3

  • I collect older cars, and as much as I love them, I've always wanted the modern tech features found in newer models.
  • Instead of investing in expensive built-ins, I got the Anker Roav Viva Pro ($69.99), an Alexa-enabled smart charger that uses voice commands to make calls, get directions, play music, stream audiobooks, and control smart devices.
  • I installed the Anker Roav Viva Pro in my 1991 BMW 318is and it completely upgraded my outdated car. Plus, the USB charging ports work extremely well.
  • Even if your car is new and equipped with an immersive infotainment system, this is a great tool to bring Alexa on the road.

I have a real passion for classic cars. Having never owned a car newer than 1993 by choice, I personally think that cars of the late 80s and early 90s are better looking, more conversational, and more fun to drive.

But the nostalgia and enjoyment of owning an older car can quickly fade away when you enter the cockpit and are instantly reminded of how out outdated the included technology is — especially when every other aspect of your life is filled with smart devices, music streamers, voice assistants, and other modern amenities. I'm sure anyone with a slightly outdated car can relate.

I used to get jealous of the tech features most modern cars come equipped with, and was often tempted to fully upgrade, but I resisted with the justification that a minimally-equipped interior was a mere trade-off for owning a car I liked much more. However, the tipping point for upgrading my car's tech actually came from a device I recently incorporated into my home: the Echo Dot

I bought the third generation Echo Dot a few months ago and it's been the best tech upgrade I've made in a long time. In just a short period of time, I've used it to ask Alexa for plenty of things — from getting the news and weather to playing music and setting reminders — and I wanted to have similar access to those features while in my car, so I decided to give the Anker Roav Viva Pro a try.

Readmore: These are the best car tech accessories you can buy

Roav Viva Pro

The Anker Roav Viva Pro is an Alexa-enabled smart device that plugs into your car's 12-volt socket/cigarette lighter. Using the power of Alexa, you can ask for directions, stream music, listen to audio books, control smart home devices, make hands-free calls, and take advantage of thousands of other skills. It also doubles as a car charger with two high-speed USB ports on the side.

How to set it up:

The first step is to turn your car on and plug it in. Next, you'll need to download the Roav Viva app on the App Store or Google Play. From there, you can sign into your Amazon account and select your preferred method of pairing it to your car radio. You'll have three choices: Bluetooth, 35mm auxiliary, and FM tuner.

I have since upgraded to a newer radio head unit from the cassette radio that originally came in my car, so I chose the Bluetooth method. Just make sure you pair the Anker Roav Viva Pro through the app, not your smartphone's Bluetooth settings, and it'll be ready to go.

For the sake of testing, I also tried the FM tuner method since anyone with a working radio, no matter how old, can use this method. All you have to do is scan through your FM tuner and find a frequency with dead air space. Then in the app, set the Anker Roav Viva Pro to that same frequency. It worked without any issues for me, but just like all things dealing with radio frequencies, it has the potential to be spotty. Variables like your car antenna's signal strength and interfering frequencies with other transmissions are factors in how clear and consistent your connection will be. If you have the option to pair via Bluetooth or aux, choose either one for a more reliable connection.

Roav Viva Pro

Using the Anker Roav Viva Pro for the basics:

In my opinion, the most important feature of the Anker Roav Viva Pro is its ability to use voice commands to safely complete tasks that would otherwise be done on your smartphone: finding directions and making phone calls.

You should never take your attention off the road to type in an address, but drivers do it all the time. With the hands-free functionality of the Roav Viva Pro, that's no longer an issue. Anker Roav Viva has access to Google Maps, Waze, and your smartphone's standard service like Apple Maps. You can ask for directions to a specific place or say something as simple as "Alexa, where's the nearest gas station?" and it will automatically search for it in your preferred app.

You can also use the Anker Roav Viva Pro for hands-free calling. If you opted to link your contacts during the set-up process, just ask Alexa to call anyone stored in your phone. Lately, I've been using and loving the Scooch Wingman, an iPhone case I recently reviewed that features a built-in dash mount, and combined with the Anker device, I'm now able to drive completely hands-free.

Although most drivers get away with using their phone while driving, it's dangerous and a potentially very expensive ticket if caught. Between steering my car and shifting gears, I almost never use my phone while in motion, but for those that do, let the Anker Roav Viva Pro help you break those habits. If you were to buy the Anker Roav Viva Pro strictly for the hands-free usage and it saves you from one ticket, it's worth it — even at $69.99.

As for music, you can ask Alexa to play your favorite artists, genres, or specific songs. It supports apps like Amazon Music, iHeart Radio, and Tune-In Radio, but Apple Music and Spotify are currently not supported. As an Apple Music subscriber myself, I understand that could be disappointing for people who use an unsupported app, but with all the other benefits that the Anker Roav Viva Pro offers, it's an easy decision to make the switch to Amazon Music.

Anker Roav Viva Pro

Taking advantage of Alexa in other ways:

If you already own an Echo device, using the Anker Roav Viva Pro for other skills should be second nature. Audiobooks, timers, weather updates, games like Jeopardy, controlling smart home devices, and much more are all available. Whether you want to ask Alexa to place an order on Amazon, order your favorite pizza, or to do something more pragmatic like open your garage door and turn on the lights as you're pulling into the driveway, it's completely doable. I'm personally not (yet) at the level of reliance on Alexa where it does everything for me, but I did ask to turn on my home air purifier and it worked seamlessly. People with a fully integrated smart home will get a lot more use out of Alexa in this regard.

The bottom line:

I really like the Anker Roav Viva Pro because everything from the setup process to putting it into everyday use is easy. Sure, I don't have a huge touch-screen infotainment system built into car's interior, but with many of the same functions as a brand new car, I don't need one. Compared to similar devices that need to be mounted on the dash with wires running to them, the Roav Viva Pro is small and unobtrusive. Just as easy as I can plug it in, I can also uninstall it. I'd rather not leave it in the cigarette lighter when my car is parked, so I regularly take it out. It's also great for using in other cars without hassle.

The two USB chargers are another simple, yet extremely useful feature. I no longer have to share the single charge port on my radio face with my passenger. I think we've all experienced car chargers so weak that they merely keep your phone on, rather than actually charging the battery, but that is not the case here. The Roav Viva Pro delivers a fast charge.

If you're clinging onto a classic car like myself, your mid-2000s model is just slightly outdated, or you can't live without Alexa even in your brand new ride, the Anker Roav Viva Pro is exactly what you've been looking for.

Conor McGregor private jet

  • Conor McGregor has posted a life lesson to his young son, Conor Jack McGregor Jnr.
  • McGregor, a UFC fighter who has earned millions, posed shirtless beside a private jet with his one-year-old boy.
  • "We must always work hard, my son," McGregor captioned the post. "Working hard is what got us here!"

Conor McGregor gave his son a life lesson in the importance of working hard while posing shirtless, in jeans and sneakers, beside a multimillion-dollar private jet.

McGregor is renowned for his lavish spending and is rarely seen without an expensive watch, a luxurious car, and a tailored suit. He spends big, but he also earns big because of his pay-per-view appeal in UFC, the premier promotion in the world of cage-fighting.

Together with the hundreds of millions of dollars he has banked from prizefighting, he has also overseen the wildly successful 2018 launch of Proper no. Twelve whiskey. Shortly after, he announced fans could also dress like him with the August McGregor clothing line.

Read more: We tried Conor McGregor's new whiskey — and it's just as bad as you'd expect

In the year from June 2017 to June 2018, McGregor reportedly earned around $99 million according to Forbes. This was helped largely because of the $85 million cheque he cashed for his 10th round loss to Floyd Mayweather, two years ago. McGregor reportedly scooped a further guaranteed $3 million for his loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov, but will have been given a larger fee after the pay-per-view figures became known.

The Irishman has certainly come a long way in a short space of time, having been a plumber less than a decade ago. Now, he is one of the most famous athletes on the planet and endorses some of the world's biggest brands like Beats by Dre, Monster Energy, and Rolls Royce.

And this career arc may well have been part of the latest message he sent to his one-year-old son, Conor Jack McGregor Jnr., when he posted a photo of the pair facing a private jet worth millions.

"We must always work hard, my son," McGregor said in the Instagram post. "Working hard is what got us here!"

McGregor will soon return to combat sports

McGregor has one month left to serve on his Nevada State Athletic Commission issued ban after getting slapped with a backdated suspension recently for the part he played in the post-fight brawls that marred his UFC 229 loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov, last October.

He is free to fight once again from April 6 and has been linked with a number of opponents.

Since McGregor's loss to Nurmagomedov, fellow lightweight Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone has been in show-stopping form as he submitted Mike Perry with a "performance of the night" armbar in November, before a violent ground-and-pound victory over Alexander Hernandez in January.

A fight between Cerrone and McGregor had been talked up by both fighters, as well as UFC boss Dana White. However, White is also eager to book a rematch between McGregor and Nurmagomedov.

One thing is clear — McGregor will be returning to cage-fighting in the coming months, and could even fight twice this year.

Vaping might be better for you than smoking, but e-cigarettes like Juul come with risks of their own (MO)

woman vaping vape e-cig

  • Research suggests that vaping, or using e-cigarettes like the Juul to inhale heated vapor, is most likely better for you than smoking, which involves inhaling burned material.
  • Still, e-cigs come with health risks of their own. They are especially dangerous for young people, experts say.
  • E-cigs contain nicotine, an addictive drug that in kids and teens appears to blunt emotional control as well as decision-making and impulse-regulation skills.
  • A single Juul "pod" delivers about the same amount of nicotine as a pack of regular cigarettes. And Juul Labs has faced scrutiny over claims that it aggressively marketed its sweet-flavored e-cigs to teens.

Smoking kills. No other habit has been so strongly tied to death.

Not surprisingly, vaping, or using e-cigarettes like the Juul, appears to be better for you than inhaling a toxic mix of burned tobacco, tar, and metals. That may be promising news for adult smokers who are struggling to quit with tools like nicotine gums, but experts say further research is needed before they can recommend e-cigs.

Altria, the tobacco company behind Marlboro cigarettes, is a big investor in Juul, paying $12.8 billion for a 35% stake. It's betting that adults who smoke cigarettes will increasingly decide to vape instead, reducing the damage they're doing to their bodies.

But e-cigarettes like the Juul are not without health risks.

Because they contain nicotine, e-cigarettes are especially dangerous for kids and teens whose brains are still developing, experts say. In young people, nicotine appears to blunt emotional control as well as decision-making and impulse-regulation skills. That most likely helped prompt a warning about e-cigs from the US surgeon general in December.

And given that it's still early days for vaping, researchers say there's a lot we still don't know about the practice and how it could affect the body.

There's also worry about how the wider landscape of e-cig devices may affect people's overall health. Besides all-in-one-style e-cigarettes like the Juul, other "tank-style" devices allow users to tweak everything from the temperature of the device to the amount of nicotine they're inhaling. Some e-cigs like these appear to contain toxic metals, and using them has been tied to an increased risk of a heart attack.

Here's what you should know about the health risks of vaping, for both young people and adults.

Juul, nicotine, and teens

juul

Among available e-cigarettes, Juul's devices, which have been on the market since 2015, offer a uniquely high dose of nicotine: one Juul "pod" delivers roughly the same nicotine content as a pack of regular cigarettes. While Juul maintains that the high nicotine content is key to its success among adult smokers who want to switch, public health experts have said it poses a danger to teens.

Those experts have also expressed concern about a Juul launch campaign that they say involved marketing the devices to young people through social media and promotional events. Additionally, Juul Labs once sold pods in a range of sweet flavors, including "cool cucumber" and "creme brulee," options that researchers say helped cement the products' seemingly viral popularity among young people.

Juul maintains that its products are intended only for adult smokers who are looking to quit.

In response to a growing backlash from public health researchers and federal regulators, the company has recently made several moves that it says are intended to keep its products out of young people's hands. For example, Juul removed the word "cool" from its cucumber flavor, nixed the creme brulee flavor, pulled mango and other fruit options from retail stores, and scrubbed much of its social-media presence.

Juul Labs — which spun off from its parent company, Pax, in 2017 — has also begun to research its devices. On Monday, it published a study reviewed by outside experts. Though that research has important caveats, it's an early look into the potential for the devices to help adult smokers quit.

Read more:A Juul-sponsored study suggests its e-cigarettes could help adult smokers cut back, but some researchers aren't convinced

Juul has other research in the works. According to ClinicalTrials.gov, the government's database for clinical studies, Juul recently completed at least five other clinical trials and is conducting at least three more.

Other e-cigs, toxic metals, and heart-attack risk

marijuana vaporizer vaping vape

Besides the Juul, dozens of other e-cigarette options are available in stores. These devices may pose health risks that range from a heightened exposure to toxic metals to even an increased risk of a heart attack.

Last spring, researchers looked at the vapors that users inhale from several popular non-Juul e-cigarette brands and came away with some potentially troubling results.

For example, they found evidence of some of the same toxic metals (such as lead) normally found in conventional cigarettes. They also found that at least some of those toxins were making their way through vapers' bodies.

In another study, scientists concluded that there was substantial evidence tying daily e-cig use to an increased risk of a heart attack. It suggested that people who vape every day might face twice the risk of a heart attack compared with people who neither vape nor smoke at all. It also suggested that daily conventional-cigarette smokers faced three times the risk of a heart attack, while people who both vape and smoke (so-called dual users) faced nearly five times the risk.

These findings may have been part of what prompted US Surgeon General Jerome Adams to release a unique warning last December about e-cigarettes.

Read more:The US surgeon general just issued a rare advisory about e-cigs like the Juul — here's why vaping is dangerous

In that rare public advisory, Adams discussed these concerns and said young people should never use e-cigs.

"We need to protect our kids from all tobacco products, including all shapes and sizes of e-cigarettes," Adams said.

Jelly Comb Pocket Size Portable Bluetooth Keyboard, $29.99, available at Amazon

If you're not packing your laptop but want to get some work done, this foldable keyboard that can connect to your tablet or phone will let you do so without taking up as much space. It's light and sturdy, but a drawback to its portability is that the key positions are squeezed together, so typing might not be as seamless of a process as usual. Still, the convenience might be worth the compromise

A battery pack

Jackery Bolt 6000 mAh Power Bank with Built-in Lightning Cable, $29.99, available at Amazon

It's always a good idea to have a battery pack on hand when you travel, and this doesn't change when you travel for business. While there are many battery packs on the market to choose from, our pick is Jackery's because its built-in cable charges your phone twice as fast as the original charger, and it's neither so small that it can only charge your device once nor so bulky that it weighs you down.

Dyson's $450 heater seems like a ridiculous cost, but it saved me hundreds of dollars last winter

  • The Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link purifies, heats, and cools air for you. It automatically removes 99.97% of pollutants and allergens and can heat or cool a much larger room than its size suggests.
  • It's not at all cheap (and there are cheaper options out there), but it definitely works better than many we've tried and is bound to last longer.
  • Even though its price is cringe-worthy at $449 on Amazon (it was originally priced even higher at $600), it saved me hundreds in electricity costs last winter.

This winter, my tiny two-bedroom apartment racked up a $500+ energy bill in one month. Our heaters were fighting the cold drafts (and, likely, improper insulation) and were coming up short. As a result, my roommates and I tried to find a not-entirely-miserable compromise between using them and just layering on sweatshirts and getting into bed right when we got home.

After we got slapped with the electric bill that could power a post-apocalyptic city for three years, we decided we needed to make a more permanent change. So, we started using the mini but all-powerful Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link. It shorted out our apartment the first few times because it was drawing too much power, but a cheap $20 investment in this surge protector solved the issue.

I'll get into the details below, but after we started using the Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link our energy bill went from $500 to a small fraction of that. I wish that it was feasible to buy one for every room.

It's a cringe-worthy investment at $449 on Amazon (originally $600), but, considering that was what we would be spending on one month alone to heat our apartment, it was more of a no-brainer for us than the average person. If you have more acceptable energy bill costs, it'll do the same thing (save you money) but the savings might be slightly more modest upfront and just as useful over the long-term.

The Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link takes up minimal room and provides maximum impact. It heats a big room evenly, takes up almost no space, looks much nicer than cheaper models, and has added features that are actually helpful rather than gimmicky, like voice-control, a 7-day schedule you can set, and a night-time mode.

dyson hot pure cool link review

If the features and long-term savings are worth $450 to you, then the Link will follow through on its promises. You will get what you pay for, and thanks to the excellence Dyson is known for, you can assume that it will continue to fulfill these promises for years to come (if you actually change the filter every now and then). If something goes wrong, Dyson offers a 2-year parts and labor warranty, and if you don't love it, you can return it easily for your money back up to 30 days after your purchase.

My stereotypically tiny New York apartment has limited floor space, so believe me when I say that this little thing is impossibly efficient. I barely notice it in the room, but it doesn't look strictly functional like this cheaper option we considered. Our common space expands into our kitchen, main hallway, and our entryway, and the high ceilings and long, narrow space has always been notoriously hard to heat evenly. Anything small enough to fit would over-bake the living room and not touch the kitchen or dead zone hallway. The Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link, with its oscillation and long-range projection, doesn't have that issue. The awkward maze of rooms all feel evenly heated. For us, this made the Link worth the extra money.

The Link also has a night mode, wi-fi connectivity, app controls, and a handy remote, too. The app is easy to use and has helpful features I'm actually interested in (like air quality), and the night-time mode uses quiet airflow settings. You can set a 7-day schedule on the app and forget about it, letting the Dyson Link handle temperature on autopilot. You can wake up to a warm house and know that it will shut off when you leave, so you aren't wasting energy or money but you're never missing out on convenience. You can set a timer and literally walk into a cozy, warm living space.

It also works with Amazon Alexa, and you can use voice control for everything from increasing the airflow speed to turning on the night-time mode.

While I mostly cared about the heating and cooling features, it's also wonderful that the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Link also works as an air purifier. It claims to automatically remove 99.97% of pollutants and allergens as small as 0.3 microns. And whether you're aware of it or not, your household air can be full of exactly that, especially if you have pets. Thanks to the inclusion of new activated carbon granules, your Link can now protect against even more harmful pollutants like formaldehyde, benzene, toluene and napthalene, which can be commonly found in building materials and household basics.

Right now, the Pure Hot +Cool Link bought new is cheapest on Amazon ($449), down from $600 originally.

Here is everything you need to make pizza at home:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best pizza stone

Why you’ll love it: Whether you’re cooking on the grill or in the oven, the durable Solido Rectangular Pizza Stone produces tasty, evenly-baked pies.

The Solido Rectangular Pizza Stone features a unique spiral base that allows for even heating and airflow. Since it gets up to temperature quicker, it cuts down on the oft-lengthy pizza stone pre-heat times.

The Solido stone fits must standard ovens and can even go on your grill. You can either leave the 13-pound pizza stone in your oven as you remove the pizza or grab it by the easy-to-grip feet using high-quality oven mitts.

Several product reviewers recommend the Solido Rectangular Pizza Stone. The reviewer at Kitchen Byte recommends it because of the even heating and the pizzeria-quality pies it produces. She noted that the stone stains from grease but, other than that, cleans up was effortless. She also found the stone was a bit unwieldy with its hefty weight.

The reviewer at Kitchen Sanity liked that she could just throw the stone on her grill. She also recommends this unit because of the excellent heat distribution and airflow.

The Solido Pizza Stone received five-star ratings from approximately 90% of the Amazon buyers who reviewed it. One reviewer who owns a restaurant specializing in wood-fired pizza appreciates that this stone is heavy, well-made, and makes terrific thin-crust pizzas.

The quality of the pies produced by this model was a common benefit mentioned by several buyers, including one who urges others to allow the stone to preheat to 500 degrees Fahrenheit before using it. Other buyers also liked the appearance of the stone.

Pros: Heats evenly due to a unique spiral base, effortless clean-up, produces professional-quality pizza

Cons: Stains easily, weighs 13 pounds

Buy the Solido Rectangular (14 inches by 16 inches) Pizza Stone on Amazon for $59.99

The best pizza pan

Why you’ll love it: If you are looking for crunchy, mouthwatering crusts that are evenly baked, the Lodge Pro-Logic Cast Iron Pizza Pan is a smart buy.

If crispy crusts are your jam, the Lodge Pro-Logic Cast Iron Pizza Pan will get the job done. The large, side-loop handles make the 11-pound pan easy to move around. And, you can cook large pizzas thanks to the roomy 14-inch-diameter baking area.

When it comes time to clean the pan, put the soap away. Cast iron is much better after you season it for years so only wash the pan with water once it cools down. Then, dry it thoroughly. Lodge offers a lifetime limited warranty with this pan.

Insider Picks' senior editor Malarie Gokey uses this pizza pan to make pizza at home when she's not using her pizza stone. It bakes crust perfectly and evenly every time, so you don't get floppy unbaked pizza crust.

The reviewer at Serious Eats also recommends the Lodge Pro-Logic Pizza Pan because it produces crusts that are “as good as it gets.” The pan cooked a pizza in about eight minutes after an hour of preheating the oven at 550 degrees Fahrenheit. The reviewer was impressed with the superb crunchiness and the light charring on parts of the crust.

The Lodge Pro-Logic Cast Iron Pizza Pan has more than1,600 five-star reviews on Amazon. Chef TK, the most helpful reviewer, lists several reasons why he recommends the pan, including it’s easy to clean, heats evenly, doesn’t stain, makes fantastic pizza, comes pre-seasoned, and has a broad range of uses. But, he warns that the pan is heavy.

Another buyer noted that she was able to make restaurant-quality dosas in this pan. However, to get the cast iron seasoned to her liking, it took a bit of work.

Pros: Lifetime limited warranty, heavy-duty, even heating, nonstick, easy to clean

Cons: The rim makes it hard to use a baking peel, somewhat pricey for a pizza pan

Buy the Lodge Pro-Logic Cast Iron Pizza Pan on Amazon for $39.90 (originally $60)

The best pizza peel

Why you’ll love it: If you’re concerned about deforming your pizza or making a mess as you move it from the peel to your stone, consider the innovative conveyor belt method of the EXO Non-Stick Polymer Sealed Super Peel.

The EXO Non-Stick Polymer Sealed Super Peel is unique because it uses a pastry cloth to create a conveyor belt for your pizza. You lightly flour the cloth, put the pizza’s edge on the lip of the peel, and pull the slider back as you push the peel forward.

You just reverse the process to put the pizza on your stone. And, sliding and cleanup are effortless thanks to the nonstick polymer coating. The cloth comes off to facilitate cleaning.

My Pizza Stone, Village Bakery, Gimme Tasty, Best Advisor, and Cook’s Illustrated all recommend this peel. In tests, Cook’s Illustrated found it was the best peel for transferring pizzas to and from the oven. The reviewers noted that this model should last a long time thanks to the polymer coating guarding against moisture. The only negatives they found was that the peel has trouble rotating food already in the oven, and it takes a little practice to get the hang of it.

The EXO Non-Stick Polymer Sealed Super Peel received four or five stars from around 91% of the Amazon buyers who reviewed it. Prior to buying this peel upon a recommendation from America’s Test Kitchen, the most helpful reviewer Kevin M. Combes had a tough time getting uncooked pizza onto his pizza stone. The Super Peel’s smooth polymer finish fixed that. Several other buyers share similar experiences.

One reviewer found the peel paid for itself after a couple of uses since she no longer orders pizza out. She also noted that it’s incredibly durable.

Pros: Conveyor belt simplifies transferring uncooked pizza from peel to stone and back, durable construction

Cons: Has a bit of a learning curve, somewhat pricey

Buy the EXO Non-Stick Polymer Sealed Super Peel on Amazon for $57

Hirst is known for boundary-pushing collections, ranging from formaldehyde preservations to carefully arranged pill bottles. In 2017, his work filled the Palazzo Grassi and the Punta della Dogana in Venice, two art museums funded by billionaireart collector François Pinault.

The Empathy Suite was formerly known as the Hugh Hefner Suite, and in 2012, CNN Travel ranked the suite No. 5 on a list of most expensive hotel rooms. Originally $40,000 per night, the new luxury renovations have spurred a $60,000 price increase.

All six of Palms' sky villas were renovated as a part of $690 million upgrade to the hotel, which was first established in 2001 and is now owned by the Fertitta brothers of Station Casino. Other villas range from $25,000 to $50,000 a night.

12 products to help you refinish and refurbish old furniture

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

Refurbished furniture products

  • Anyone who recently moved into a new home or refurnished their space knows that buying new furniture can be enormously expensive.
  • But with products like wood polish, paint medium, and a little elbow grease, you can fix or salvage your old furniture, giving it a totally new look or improving on its condition.
  • As an avid DIY-er, I rounded up some of the best and most useful products you can use to restore your household favorites or cheap thrift finds.

Whether its your phone or your canned goods, everything you purchase comes with a shelf-life. Though we'd like to believe our material objects are made to last a lifetime, some things — like your old lunchbox — should probably be disposed of at some point in time. Tossing a $2 can of beans isn't cringeworthy for most, but when it comes to large or expensive items that cost more out of pocket, the disposal process becomes more difficult.

Take furniture, for example. People spend hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars on quality pieces only to see them damaged from everyday use — leaving owners with the option to toss their pricey investment pieces or to let them linger as defective additions to their otherwise decent-looking room. Though there is the option of buying new, what are you supposed to do with the old furniture? I know enough people who would rather sleep on a broken bed than carry a new one up five flights of stairs.

Through a little research and personal experience, I found a dozen ways to completely refurbish old furniture. The best part about all these projects is that they're all pretty simple to carry out and they all cost way less than investing in a brand new piece.

These 12 products can help you refinish and refurbish old furniture, countertops, and more:

Old English Scratch Cover

Old English Scratch Cover for Wood, $5.38, available at Amazon

When should you use it?

This scratch cover is an ideal solution to obnoxious surface-level scratches in dark-wood furniture. Though it does not fill indentations, it polishes wood and hides visible scratches by staining them to match your original piece. The formula is intended to be permanent to keep your furniture looking pristine for an extended period of time.

Why should you use it?

This 12-ounce bottle is rated 4.5 stars out of 5 on Amazon and for a good reason. Customers have left tons of before and after pictures of their projects in the reviews section and have claimed that their heavily worn furniture was left looking rejuvenated and remarkable after use.

Gorilla Wood Glue

Gorilla Wood Glue, $3.84, available at Amazon

When should you use it?

This glue is the perfect solution to broken cabinets or trimmings that have become detached. It works like a normal glue, takes 24 hours to completely cure, and is versatile — meaning you can use this stuff for all types of indoor or outdoor projects.

Why should you use it?

It seems that no matter what type of item Gorilla Glue releases, the products live up to their esteemed standards. I've used it for home decor projects like creating baskets for my desk supplies and the glue bonded the wood without ever creating a mess or coming loose.

Blue Bear Paint and Urethane Stripper

Blue Bear SoyGel Paint & Urethane Stripper, $64.04, available at Amazon

When should you use it?

Brushing over old paint might be the easy route, but without stripping the previous layers, you will deal with chipping and accelerated wear. This solution removes paint, urethane, enamels, sealers, and other coatings prior to the application of new layers — so that you can properly prep your surface.

Why should you use it?

There are multiple ways to remove paint, but this option is biodegradable and does not release toxic fumes. One user left a review explaining they had to strip all the floors in a house that was built in the 1950s, and they found that the paint remover was able to quickly break down the finish without the harmful or headache-inducing smells we've all come to expect from products like mineral spirits.

The best pajamas for kids of all ages

$
0
0

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

best kids pajamas

  • As children need many hours of sleep each day, many kids will spend more time wearing pajamas than clothing.
  • Pajamas need to fit your child well for comfort and safety, which also means they'll be frequently replaced as kids grow so quickly.
  • Here are five different brands that make great pajamas for kids of various ages, including pajamas from Simple Joys by Carter's, the Tea Collection, Vaenait Baby, Hanna Anderson, and Target's Cat & Jack pajamas.

Pajamas are both some of the easiest and the trickiest articles of clothing to buy for your kids. Easy because you don't have to worry as much about them looking presentable in public. As long as your kid is comfortable, it's OK if she wears mismatched PJ tops and bottoms or sleeps in an outfit emblazoned with unicorns, superheroes, or polka dots.

On the other hand, the rate at which kids outgrow clothes makes buying pajamas that will actually be worth their price tag a balancing act. You want to buy PJs that are just a bit too big now so the kid gets plenty of use out of them, but you can't go too big. Loose pajamas can be uncomfortable and are in fact a safety hazard both in terms of potentially limiting motion and fire danger.

But kids' PJs are no place to go cheap despite the fact that they'll be soon outgrown. Many children spend 10 or even 12 hours asleep each day well into their preschool years, so they'll be wearing their pajamas as much or even more than clothing. The more comfortable those PJs are, the more of those hours in bed or in the crib will actually be productive.

When considering the best pajamas for your kids, start by considering the child's age and what comes with it. For babies, you need PJs that you can easily open up and/or remove for diaper changes. Toddlers who are starting to walk may do better without "feetie" pajamas so that you can remove their socks and give them better stability on smooth floors. As kids get older and can dress themselves, it's time to move away from one piece pajama outfits to separate tops and bottoms.

Next, think about materials. Organic cotton pajamas cost more than their polyester counterparts, but they might be safer for sensitive skin. And with proper care, they last well, too. While some extra-concerned parents shop for flame-resistant pajamas, most are comfortable with pairs that fit their kids well enough to not create a large pocket of air between the fabric and a child's skin, thereby minimizing danger during the unfortunate (and unlikely) event of an evacuation during a fire.

Finally, once you have function, sizing, and style picked out, it's time for you to select the print. The issue there will be an overabundance of choices, not a dearth. Good luck on that one.

Here are the best pajamas for kids of all ages:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best pajamas for newborns

Why you'll love them: Simple Joys by Carter's Cotton Footed Sleep and Play pjs are soft and snuggly and come in lots of cute prints, but the main reason you'll love them is their tiny little price tag.

Most newborns outgrow clothing so quickly that many of those outfits you got as baby gifts will be returned or re-gifted with the tags still on. In fact, some kids never even fit newborn sized clothing at all. So newborn pajamas aren't the place to spend top dollar. But on the other hand, your baby's skin will never be softer or more sensitive, so this is also no time to go cheap!

Simple Joys by Carter's makes 100% cotton newborn pajamas that are soft, warm, and that have a full neck to foot zip, making diaper changes easier and cleaner. They have built-in feet that will keep your baby warm, and a snap closure tab that covers the zipper pull, preventing pokes and keeping the garment zipped up tight.

The PJs are available in a number of prints, many of which are gender neutral, some of which are more clearly male or female in color, pattern, and text. Like the one that says: "Little Sister," for example? That one is for a girl.

Of equal note to all those points is the fact that you get a two-pack of Simple Joys by Carter's Cotton Footed Sleep and Play PJs for $15.99. Yes, there are cheaper baby pajamas out there, but having been through many pairs of these with my own kids, I can tell you they are a perfect balance between affordability and quality.

Nearly 500 shoppers have left Amazon reviews for Little Joys by Carter's pajamas, and the PJs have a solid 4.6-star averaged rating. One mom calls them "cute and great quality," adding that they "hold [up] wonderfully after each wash." Another called the pajamas "made well... and really cute."

Several shoppers did note the rather thin material, though, so they won't add much insulation and may require the addition of a sleep sack as another layer.

Pros: Great price, full zip for easy diapering, available in many prints

Cons: Thin material

Buy a two-pack of newborn Little Joys by Carter's pajamas on Amazon for $15.99

The best pajamas for infants

Why you'll love them: Tea Collection Patterned Footed Pajamas come in multiple sizes, so you can find just the right fit for your baby even as he packs on pounds and inches.

As your baby grows out of the newborn stage and all through his infancy, he's going to grow and change quickly. He is also going to start rolling, then sitting up, then crawling, and soon enough, walking.

So he needs a flexible, durable pajama that can handle all the action and that will keep him warm and safe whether he's sleeping, army crawling, or waddling around, and the Tea Collection Patterned Footed Pajamas have you (or your baby, rather) covered on all fronts.

Tea Collection Patterned Footed Pajamas come in five different sizes and are grouped in three-month intervals for the three smaller options (three to six months, six to nine, and nine to twelve, e.g.) so it will be easy to find a pair that fits your kid well.

They have a brushed interior that increases the softness and comfort and a long front zipper for easy changing and diapering. And while soft and flexible enough for comfort and easy motion, they are also designed to fit snugly, conforming to multiple Dimensional Restrictions imposed for safety purposes.

Tea Collection pajamas hold up well even after multiple washings and even once your baby is dragging himself around on the floor and rolling around in his crib. He will end up outgrowing them long before their service life is up, but that's better than the PJs wearing out and you needed to buy more.

The expert product testers at Wirecutter called Tea Collection pajamas "super soft" and noted the pretty prints, which manage to be cute without being cutesy. A writer there did say they tend to run small, though.

Pros: Brushed interior for softness, available in multiple sizes, attractive prints

Cons: Sizing runs small

Buy a pair of Tea Collection Patterned Footed Pajamas at Tea Collection for $22.95

The best pajamas for toddlers

Why you'll love them: The Vaenait Baby Toddler PJs have an elastic waistband that keeps them comfortably in place while your little one rolls around in bed or runs around the house.

A lot of amazing things happen in the months following a first birthday. During this time, most kids will get up on their feet and start walking, and soon enough they will start running. And not long after a kid's second birthday, it will be time for the joys of potty training. Both of these toddler phase milestones make Vaenait Baby Toddler PJs a great choice for your one to three-year-old kid,

Vaenait Baby Toddler PJs have a broad elastic waistband that keeps them securely though gently in place even as your kid bounces up and down and runs all around. Yet the bottoms are still easy to slip down when it's time for your kid to sit on the potty, or for applying, removing, or swapping out a diaper before they have mastered the art of using the bathroom.

As this phase of life tends to be a messy one for all sorts of reasons, parents will love the fact that each pair of Vaenait Baby's toddler-sized pajamas only costs $14.99. That low price point will allow you to keep plenty of pairs on hand and will take the sting out of tossing out any PJs that wear out or are too heavily soiled to justify keeping.

I also appreciate how all Vaenait Baby pajamas in the toddler sizes are unisex, with gender-neutral colors and patterns. Little boys and girls alike will love the prints featuring cars, stars, robots, and monsters, and parents will, too. Especially if any pairs make it through to the hand-me-down phase of life.

With more than 150 reviews posted on Amazon, Vaenait Baby Toddler PJs enjoy a fine 4.5-star overall rating. A customer named Stephanie called them "great quality" and loved the graphics. Another buyer said they were "quality, soft pajamas at a remarkable price."

Many buyers noted that the sizes run too small, though, so consider sizing up right from the start.

Pros: Elastic waist band, unisex colors and graphics, good price point

Cons: Sizing runs small

Buy a pair of Vaenait Baby Toddler PJs on Amazon for $9.99-$14.99

Primary has quickly become one of my favorite online stores for affordable kids clothes — I have yet to find anything priced over $40

Primary Kids Clothes Author's Photo

  • Primary makes high-quality baby, toddler, and kids clothing at prices any family's budget can handle.
  • Its clothing comes in simple patterns and solid colors so it is largely gender-neutral and won't go out of style.
  • The online shopping experience is quick and easy, so busy parents can load up a child's wardrobe then get on with things.

I was born in the '80s, so as it happened, some of the baby and toddler clothes my parents saved were rather in style when my son was born in 2013. The bulk of it, however ... was not. So we bought a lot of baby clothes. And as our next child happened to be a girl, much of the clothing we had acquired for him was relegated to the donation pile (and some to the memory box) as soon as he outgrew it.

Also, often when kids outgrow a given garment, it's fit only for disposal, having required so many washes what with the messiness of early life.

If only there had been a company that made affordable but high-quality clothing that came in basic, timeless, and gender-neutral designs back in 2013, we would have saved a lot of cash getting clothing that could have been handed down from brother to sister. Alas, I knew of no such company. Then, in 2015, a pair of moms founded one. And as their company, Primary, makes clothing for kids aged 0 through 12, you can bet we're shopping there heavily going forward.

As the name suggests, the model informing Primary is simplicity.

The company carries all the various types of clothes you'd expect from a retailer catering to youngsters, from onesies and sweatshirts and leggings for babies, to dresses and sweaters for girls, to sweatpants and tees for boys, and PJs for all — albeit without one thing you expect from most brands: branding.

Primary clothes come in a host of bright, solid colors, they come in stripes, and — the most adventurous — a few come with a multicolored heart print. There are no logos, no graphics, no prints; the clothes are simple, but not boring. The vibrancy of the colors and the many styles available (they offer 11 different cuts of dress alone, for example) make it easy to have your kids looking sharp, and their garments mix and match well with one another as well as with clothing from other companies.

Of equal or greater importance to how the clothes look is how they are made.

Primary uses high-quality cotton that meets the OEKO-TEX standard. And rather than explaining what that means in my own words, I'll use an excerpt of Primary's own explanation of the OEKO-TEX (pronounced oh-WEEK-oh-tex) certification:

The goal of OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is to ensure that fabrics pose no risk to human health and have a skin-friendly pH level to ensure against skin irritation ... This certification means that every single chemical used in the production of our fabrics have been tested and found free of over 300 chemicals and known irritants (such as banned azo dyes, formaldehyde, pentachlorophenol, pesticides, cadmium and nickel) in accordance with legal regulations and US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) requirements regarding lead and harmful chemicals. It's a higher standard that is better for skin, better for the environment, and better for parents' peace of mind.

The clothes are also quite comfortable. My son has said as much, and our daughter seems to agree, though so far her vocabulary is limited to mama, dada, yeah, cat, and what we think is a stand-in for her brother's name. (We named him Ben, but for now "BAH!" will do.)

As for the prices? Most Primary clothes cost less than $20. Some cost less than $10. And after scouring the site, I have yet to find one thing priced above $40.

Kylie Jenner

Kylie Jenner just became the youngest self-made billionaire ever at age 21, according to Forbes.

Forbes announced last year that Jenner was on her way to becoming a billionaire, and now she has officially hit the mark thanks to 9% revenue growth in her business, Kylie Cosmetics, in 2018.

Jenner has been in the limelight since she was 10 years old, when the first "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" episode aired on the E! Network.

Since then, she has created a cosmetics empire, accumulated a lavish car collection, and given birth to baby Stormi Webster with boyfriend Travis Scott.

In July 2018, Forbes announced that Jenner is one of America's richest "self-made" women with an estimated net worth of $900 million. Many people criticized Forbes describing Jenner as "self-made," saying that she was born into extreme wealth and fame, as Business Insider's Kate Taylor previously reported.

Forbes said the bulk of Jenner's net worth comes from her makeup empire, Kylie Cosmetics, which Jenner owns entirely.

Jenner is not shy when it comes to showing off her hard-earned cash. She often takes to Instagram— where she has 128 million followers and charges $1 million per sponsored post — to show off her latest purchases.

Some of Jenner's most notable luxuries include a mansion complete with a purse closet, high-end baby accessories, Cartier bling, and car collection.

Before her makeup empire, Jenner made her reality TV debut. She was nine years old when the first episode of "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" was filmed. Jenner created buzz from a scene of her jumping on a stripper poll in sister Kim's bedroom.
