American Eagle launched a new clothing rental service, and it's just the latest sign that fast fashion as we know it is dying

American Eagle

  • American Eagle has launched a rental subscription service for clothing.
  • For $49.95 a month, customers can rent three items at a time and exchange them an unlimited number of times.
  • Renting has become a major fashion trend as younger consumers who crave newness look for more sustainable ways to shop.
  • This shift in shopping habits spells trouble for fast-fashion retailers that churn out new styles each week.

Last year, Business of Fashion called out the rental market as being one of the next big trends in fashion.

"In more and more categories, consumers are choosing to rent rather than own goods outright. Think of Spotify supplanting CD sales and downloads, Netflix replacing video stores and ZipCar standing in for car ownership among many young urbanites," a group of writers wrote in the publication's State of Fashion report for 2019.

They continued: "This is a fundamental evolution in consumer behavior and we expect it will have an impact in the fashion business in the years ahead."

Companies such as Rent the Runway, which allows customers to rent designer pieces one-off or sign up for a monthly subscription service, are paving the way in the rental market, and mainstream brands are increasingly joining in.

As Business of Fashion noted, Express recently launched its "Express Style Trial" service, which allows consumers to rent up to three items at any given time for a monthly fee. Last month, American Eagle launched (an almost identical) clothing rental subscription model known as "American Eagle Style Drop."

For $49.95 a month, members can rent up to three items at a time and have an unlimited number of exchanges. The shipping costs are covered each way, and dry cleaning is free. If customers decide they like a piece, they are able to keep it and are charged full price, which is reminiscent of the Amazon Prime Wardrobe setup.

And customers seem to like it: "Just got my first box today! In luv with this game changer!!!!" one subscriber wrote on American Eagle's Facebook page.

Experts say that the rental market has the opportunity to thrive because it remedies a major conflict in the younger generation's shopping habits: These customers not only crave newness, but they are also more conscious about sustainable living and preserving the environment. Renting clothes allows them to stay fashionable without buying cheap clothes from fast-fashion retailers.

This could spell trouble for retailers such as H&M, Forever 21, and Zara, whose business is built around newness but doesn't offer the same level of sustainability.

Mike Barry, director of sustainable business at UK retailer Marks & Spencer, recently told The Guardian that while the backlash is brewing against fast fashion, it isn't widespread yet.

Still, "it would be a very brave business leader who didn't look into the next 12 to 18 months and say we are not heading there," he said.

"The signals are [fashion is] on the same trajectory as plastics and forests and alternatives to meat," he added.

Popular watch startup Daniel Wellington has sold over 11 million watches to date — after wearing one, I understand their universal appeal

  • Swedish brand Daniel Wellington takes its style inspiration (as well as its name) from a man the founder met while traveling. He paired a classic, luxury timepiece with a casual NATO strap.
  • The 8-year-old watch company has found success selling its own versions of this cool and stylish combination, in addition to mesh and leather varieties.
  • The Classic Petite Melrose, 32mm ($189) is one of its most popular styles and sums up the brand in one watch: minimalist yet versatile, affordable yet high-quality.

In any mention of affordable watch brands today, it's impossible not to acknowledge the dominance of Daniel Wellington, the Swedish start-up that, if you follow even just a couple of online influencers, you've seen on your Instagram at some point.

Daniel Wellington isn't the name of the founder (that would be Filip Tysander), but of a man who Tysander met while traveling. Wellington was spotted wearing a vintage Rolex with a rugged, military-inspired NATO strap, a high-low pairing that inspired Tysander to create his own line of stylish watches with interchangeable straps.

Since its founding in 2011, Daniel Wellington, or DW, has sold over 11 million of its minimalist, timeless, and mostly under-$200 watches worldwide.

Such success has to be attributed at least in part to its thriving social media community of members who bring Daniel Wellington along for all their picturesque travels or make it the finishing touch on their composed outfits of the day.

However, the brand would be nothing if it didn't balance the intersection of style, versatility, and affordability with poise and confidence.

Its men's and women's timepieces aren't actually sold in a large variety of styles, which makes your decision easier and is part of the brand's appeal. With its Classic, Classic Petite, and Dapper Collections, you can usually choose between black or white dials; silver, gold, or rose gold accents; and two different watch face sizes.

One of its bestsellers is the Classic Petite Melrose ($169-$189), available in 28mm and 32mm sizes. I tried out the 32 mm rose gold version powered by Japanese Quartz movement and loved that it felt super light and slim on my wrist. It's also water-resistant (up to 100 feet), and the shiny mesh strap is pretty, but also easily interchangeable if I want a change.

It's an accessory that's perfect for when you want to dress up your look without practically shouting at passersby to admire your watch. While it isn't flashy, it's just striking enough that when someone does notice it, they'll love it and ask where it's from. Until someone does that, you may even forget you're wearing it since it's so light.

Of course, the brand has to acknowledge its original inspiration by selling nylon-strapped watches ($179-$199). The combination of a sleek, simple round case and a durable, sporty strap makes the watch casual, but not sloppy or chunky like many other brand's attempts at casual style.

If you don't like mesh or nylon (or do, and want to expand your collection), Daniel Wellington also offers genuine Italian leather strap watches in a variety of colors for a more classic look and feel. So, despite the limited number of watch cases, you can still find a DW watch that suits your style and tastes.

Richard Branson reveals what it was like to ride out one of history's most destructive hurricanes in his wine cellar

Richard Branson

  • Hurricane Irma, which struck the Caribbean and the southeastern US in September 2017, was one of the largest and most powerful storms in history.
  • Virgin Group founder Richard Branson rode out the storm at his compound on Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands.
  • Branson likened the experience to "14 hours of a screaming train going by."
  • Irma directly affected 1.2 million people and caused more than $3 billion in damage.

Hurricane Irma was one of the largest and most powerful storms in history. Irma, which struck the Caribbean and the southeastern US in September 2017, was a Category Five hurricane that generated sustained winds of 187 mph. The storm was also massive — roughly the size of Texas.

This is why many were shocked when Virgin Group founder Richard Branson decided to ride out the storm at his compound on Necker Island, one of the British Virgin Islands.

Branson and a handful of Necker's staff spent the night in the private island's reinforced wine cellar.

Recently, Branson recounted what that evening was like for those in the cellar.

"It was 14 hours of a screaming train going by," Branson said in an interview with Business Insider. "We were very lucky to be in a wine cellar, a good concrete wine cellar."

Necker IslandAccording to Branson, the group took full advantage of the wine cellar's contents during the night to pass the time.

"It didn't feel so bad when we came out, we were all in a good mood," he said.

Read more: I flew Virgin Atlantic from London to New York to see if Richard Branson's airline is still one of the world's best — here's the verdict

However, the devastation caused by the hurricane was sobering for Branson.

"It is a traumatic time here in the British Virgin Islands," he said in a blog post published on Virgin Group's website the day after the storm struck. "Hurricane Irma is continuing a path of destruction that brought the eye of the storm to Necker Island, Moskito Island, and the whole surrounding area."

He continued: "I have never seen anything like this hurricane. Necker and the whole area have been completely and utterly devastated. We are still assessing the damage, but whole houses and trees have disappeared."

The doors and windows outside of the wine cellar were blown 40 feet away, he said.

All local communications networks were knocked out by the storm. As a result, his blog post had to be dictated through a satellite phone.

In total, Irma directly affected 1.2 million people and caused more than $3 billion in damage as it carved a path of destruction through the islands and the American South. Tragically, the storm also caused 129 fatalities in the US alone.

For Branson, this story has a happier ending.

"We've had 500 wonderful people for 18 months rebuilding Necker Island and also helping rebuilding schools in the area and it's now back and beautiful again," he said. "So we have our home back which is great."

These $30 vacuum bags are the best space-saving hack I've figured out yet for my small apartment

$

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

71LFiwGDw5L._SL1000_

  • I've spent a lot of time and money on organization products for my small NY apartment.
  • Of everything I've bought, vacuum bags have been the most effective.
  • For $30, I converted my storage space from six large containers to five stackable airtight bags. They take up 1/10th of the space, and I didn't have to throw out things I still want.

If you've ever moved your belongings from one space to a markedly smaller one, you'll already be aware of what I like to refer to as the "Alice in Wonderland" effect. You get everything settled, go to sleep, and wake up to find that your possessions have grown to three times their original size, the walls have shrunk, and a place your real estate agent called "charming" is now claustrophobic.

For me, this is what it was like moving from the midwest to New York City — land of four seasons, high rent, and categorically small closets. Suddenly, owning more than one sweatshirt was unjustifiable.

I became interested in organization as a matter of necessity. I spent every Sunday night trying to feng shui my room into a clutter-free zone. I bought lots of helpful products in the ongoing search, and I collected crowdsourced wisdom from colleagues.

However, the small living space hack that has made the biggest difference, by a mile, was buying vacuum bags. I would have tried them sooner, but they carried the faint stigma of long infomercials and homes that smell like bleach. At 23, I felt too young.

But after fitting the contents of two duffels, two backpacking packs, and two large suitcases into five vacuum-storage bags that take up one tenth of the space under my bed, I am a complete convert. It's the best $30 I've spent in a long time.

The 'SpaceSaver' vacuum bags I chose were highlighted as "Amazon's Choice," had over 8,800 reviews, and a 4.3-star rating overall. For $30, I didn't need them to do much aside from work.

The bags come in three sizes: Medium for $20 (28 x 20 inches), Large for $23 (32 x 24 inches), and Jumbo for $30 (40 x 30 inches). I grabbed the Jumbo bags for under-bed storage, but you may opt for the smaller sizes if you're planning to store them somewhere that requires you to be mindful of borders (like layering them into a suitcase you're storing anyway).

They claim to reduce a bag's volume by 80%, and that sounds right to me. The Jumbo bags themselves are spacious, and surprised me with how many towels, puffy comforters, multiple sets of sheets, sleeping bags, and sweatshirts I could stuff in without effort.

71xoW U8ZkL._SL1000_

In terms of actually using them, the process is pretty much intuitive. I didn't read directions, and I didn't need to — which is good news for anyone who wants to solve a storage issue immediately, without undue energy or attention.

All you have to do is open a bag up, stuff many, many things inside, zip it closed (a clip helps ensure the tracks for the seal are aligned), remove the cap, and suction all of the air out of the bag with your vacuum. Then, screw the cap back on. I was careful to replace the cap as quickly as possible so minimal air escaped in the interim, but it didn't seem like I should have worried; there was no giveaway ‘woosh' sound or noticeable expansion. And in case you're traveling without a vacuum, the set also comes with a travel pump — which was also easy to use.

The SpaceSaver bags are made from anti-microbial materials, too, so there shouldn't be any concern of mold, mildew, or bacteria.

I've had a straightforward, positive experience with them, but, if for some reason you don't, they are backed by a 100% money-back guarantee — just email their customer service for a replacement.

All in all, I've tried virtually every life hack there is when it comes to getting creative with maximizing a small space. And while the space itself will dictate which tips and tricks you can successfully use, vacuum bags will probably work for most of them, and they've been the far-and-away winner for me in terms of storage efficiency. If you're looking for a way to de-clutter without throwing out your winter clothes, comforter, and spare linens seasonally, you probably won't regret spending $30 on a few of these.

A chief marketing officer who works with 12,000 luxury brands says consumers are caught up in 'logo-mania,' and it's helped a famously flashy brand make a huge comeback

  • The Italian luxury fashion brand Gucci has made a comeback in recent years.
  • That's according to ModeSens' chief marketing officer, Krystle Craycraft, who works with 12,000 luxury brands such as Hermès and Louis Vuitton.
  • According to Craycraft, key factors for the brand's success include the revival of "logo-mania" and an interest in historic brands as both longtime and first-time luxury consumers want to invest in quality craftsmanship.

It's no secret Gucci has made a comeback.

As Krystle Craycraft, the chief marketing officer of the online fashion assistant ModeSens, put it, "Gucci has made a fabulous comeback, and they are maintaining it, which is kind of amazing."

The resurgence for the 98-year-old company arguably began in 2015, when its newly named CEO, Marco Bizzarri, hired Alessandro Michele as creative director. Its rise in popularity continued through 2018, when the company saw huge growth in online sales. Google's Year in Search report listed Gucci as No. 5 on a list of most searched fashion brands. In addition, previous Business Insider reporting showcased Gucci as one of the McKinsey Global Fashion Index's 20 major companies leading the global fashion industry.

Today, Gucci remains one of the hottest fashion brands in the world. Alongside the creative genius of Michele, credit for its popularity goes to millennials and celebrity promotion, along with the revival of '90s logo trends. Ruth La Ferla, who described logo-mania in her November New York Times piece "What Gives the Logo Its Legs," acknowledged Gucci as one of many brands contributing to the trend.

Gucci belt

Craycraft said Gucci remained one of her company's most in-demand brands.

When asked about today's status symbol, she confidently answered with one of the brand's leading accessories: "We have been selling a lot of Gucci belts. It's always changing, but a lot of Gucci belts. People really love them, it's Gucci-mania still ... because it's an affordable piece, and logo-mania has been a trend over the past couple of years."

Gucci belts retail on the company's site beginning at $350 but can sell for upward of $1,000. Customers can also turn to sites such as Craycraft's ModeSens, along with the competitors Lyst and ShopStyle, all of which catalog locations in which belts may be available for lower prices.

Gucci belt bag

"In terms of our consumer base, the majority of our consumers are high-end shoppers," Craycraft said, "but we do still have a contingent that are just buying that one piece or a couple pieces that they really just have to have, and Gucci belts seem to be the ticket for everyone, across all segments."

Alongside belts, the Gucci designs include logo T-shirts, sweatshirts, and bags. Bags range from classic purses with the brand's traditional dark green and red stripe to more trendy, boundary-pushing styles that use bright colors and velvet, something Business Insider's Jessica Tyler observed after visiting a New York store.

Gucci belt & Choker

"I think that while Gucci has some pieces that are out there," Craycraft said, "they also have their timeless, classic bags — and even new styles that still feel timeless. Customers are gravitating towards those styles since they know if they invest in them, they will have those pieces for many years to come."

Despite its comeback, the brand has recently made headlines for one of the latest scandals in the fashion world. On February 6, Gucci issued an apology following the release of a $900 wool balaclava sweater that people said resembled blackface. The company removed the sweater from both in-store and online sales. Prada faced similar controversy in December for a charm that people said resembled blackface imagery.

I visited the tallest and longest glass bridge in the world — which spans China's 'Grand Canyon' — and it was a colossal waste of time

ZhangjiajieGlassBridge (25 of 35)

  • The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge in China is the longest and highest glass bridge in the world.
  • It gained widespread popularity after opening in 2016 and has been featured in numerous viral videos showing tourists having thrilling and terrifying experiences looking through the glass floor.
  • While the scenery was beautiful, the site was overrun with tourists and the glass was so scuffed it was hard to see to the floor below.
  • The entire experience was underwhelming given the price point and the numerous difficulties to visiting.

Like many millennial travelers, I sometimes pick my vacation destinations based on something I see on the internet. Such was the case with a recent trip to China.

After seeing viral video after viral video of terrified tourists crawling over a futuristic glass bridge spanning a verdant gorge, I decided I had to visit.

Opened in 2016, the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge in Hunan, China is the tallest and longest glass bridge in the world. The walkway sits 980 feet above the canyon floor and is more than 1,400 feet long.

It had been billed as both breathtakingly beautiful and thrilling — a place, some might say, to get the ultimate selfie.

Soon after arriving, I learned a hard lesson in the difference between the glossy photos and videos of travel media and the reality for the average tourist.

Here's what it was like:

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is located in the mountainous province of Hunan in southern China. It's a 45-minute bus ride from Wulingyuan, a scenic town at the base of the stunning Wuling Mountain Range, where most tourists stay.

The Wuling Mountain Range is known for its 3,000 quartzite sandstone pillars that look like floating mountains on a misty day. While I was excited to see that, I jumped at the chance to see the bridge. It looked like an architectural marvel on top of China's Grand Canyon.

We arrived at the bridge a little after noon to a very heavy security procedure —x-ray machine, metal detector, and pat-down. It was extremely lucky that I happened to have our passports, which were required for entry, in my backpack. What wasn't lucky was that the security person informed me (in Mandarin, which I don't speak), that I couldn't bring my backpack or my camera.

There are 2 major surprises in today's luxury real-estate market, according to a developer who's designed multimillion-dollar New York City penthouses

$

432 park avenue

  • Luxury real estate in New York City isn't selling, a New York-based developer and architect told Mansion Global.
  • That's not the only thing he finds surprising: Gimmicks, he said, are being used to sell luxury property, and it's working.
  • It's part of a larger trend in which luxury apartment buildings are going to greater lengths to attract tenants by offering over-the-top amenities.

In the world of New York City real estate, luxury is lingering on the market a hair too long.

"Nothing's selling," Cary Tamarkin, a New York City developer and architect of Tamarkin Co., told Mansion Global when asked what was the biggest surprise in the luxury real-estate market. Tamarkin's designs include a luxury condo in the Upper West Side with penthouses worth $18 million and $22.5 million, The Real Deal reported.

"No one has a crystal ball, so there's always a cycle at the end of the development," he said. "Sometimes you're pleasantly surprised, sometimes you're not."

According to The Real Deal, supply outweighing demand is the culprit behind the slowdown of the city's luxury real-estate market.

Just consider New York's surplus of penthouses. Many have been sitting on the market for months, even years, and some eventually receive a drastic price cut or are carved into two smaller apartments, Business Insider's Katie Warren previously reported.

"Like any commodity, when the market is saturated with them, their value declines," Jason Haber, an agent at Warburg Realty in Manhattan, told Warren. "If under every rock you found a diamond, diamonds would decline in value. That's what is happening right now."

Read more:There's a big difference between what 'penthouse' used to mean and what it actually means now, according to a luxury real-estate broker and 'Million Dollar Listing' star

Versailles townhouse parlor

More than half of luxury homes in Manhattan — priced at $4 million or above — were sold at discounted prices in the first five months of 2018, Warren wrote, citing Mansion Global. And at 432 Park Avenue, New York City's tallest residential building, a 95th-floor penthouse listed for $82 million was split into two apartments, 95A and 95B, for $41.25 million and $40.75 million, respectively, after being on the market for two-plus years, Curbed reported.

Efforts to get luxury properties off the market have continued into 2019: A SoHo triplex penthouse was slashed to $59.5 million from $65 million, Warren reported in another article.

But it's not just penthouses. A townhouse on the Upper East Side, dubbed "Versailles in Manhattan," has been on and off the market for 15 years. Its highest asking price was $35 million, but in May it was slashed to $19.75 million by Douglas Elliman and Corcoran.

Luxury apartments are using 'gimmicky' perks and amenities to attract buyers

That doesn't mean that luxury buyers aren't being enticed, though. There's just a new way of swaying them, and it involves wild perks.

"I was surprised by the Annabelle Selldorf building [on the Far West Side in Manhattan] with the cars that go up to your apartment," Tamarkin said. "It felt gimmicky and I was surprised that it worked so well. When people started using international starchitects, I was surprised that that worked to sell apartments."

It's a similar tactic to those used in an $85 million Hell's Kitchen condo, which comes with tickets to outer space and a couple of Rolls-Royces.

Read more:8 of the craziest perks we've seen in luxury real-estate listings

atelier space condo 2

These gimmicks are part of a larger trend in which luxury apartment buildings are going to greater lengths to attract tenants by offering increasingly lavish amenities. Think rooftop running tracks and dog parks, outdoor movie theaters, and residents-only bars and restaurants.

And the trend is not unique to New York City.

In Miami, one luxury building provided its residents with Tesla-driving chauffeurs. In Baltimore, 414 Light Street is also loaded with amenities, including an al fresco dining space, a yoga and meditation room, and a business lounge. And Oceanwide Plaza in Los Angeles, a three-tower development, will feature a 2-acre "sky park" with two dog parks, a basketball court, lawns, a swimming pool, and a running track.

That's not surprising considering New York also isn't the only city where luxury isn't selling — a Los Angeles megamansion listed at $250 million recently received a price cut of $100 million, and it's still on the market.

J.Crew and sister brand Madewell launched new sustainable denim collections that use less water, chemicals, and energy to produce

fair trade denim

  • J.Crew and Madewell are furthering their efforts to be more socially responsible by teaming up with Fair Trade USA, a non-profit organization that helps implement better working conditions and more environmentally friendly manufacturing processes.
  • Both J.Crew and Madewell's first Fair Trade Certified denim collections use 75% less water, 65% fewer chemicals, and a lot less energy.
  • In addition to being good for the environment, the collections provide Saitex factory workers with benefits, equal pay for women, and additional donations to help support infrastructure in their local communities in Vietnam.
  • Starting as low as $59.50, the J.Crew and Madewell's collections include jeans, shorts, skirts, overalls, and denim jackets.

As consumers continually become more conscious of the products they buy and the brands they support, many companies are doing away with the strictly-for-profit mentality and are setting up initiatives to become more socially responsible.

You can buy sneakers made out of recycled plastic from the ocean, organic cotton sheets, and a whole slew of products that will give directly back to those in need with your purchase, but denim, arguably the most omnipresent wardrobe staple, is still one of the most wasteful products to make.

However, J.Crew Group, the parent company to J.Crew and Madewell, is doing its part to change that — all while supporting local manufacturing communities and sticking to the price points and styles you've come to appreciate.

The company recently teamed up with Fair Trade USA, a non-profit organization that helps brands improve their manufacturing processes and their commitments to the environment and the people that produce their products. As a result of the new partnership, both J.Crew and Madewell recently launched their first Fair Trade Certified denim collections.

madewell fair trade 2

What's different about how the denim is produced

In teaming up with Fair Trade USA, J.Crew Group also partnered with Saitex, the leading producer of sustainable denim, located in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Saitex has figured out a way to reduce the use of three major components in its production process: water, chemicals, and energy.

The biggest waste factor in traditional denim production is water, but Saitex has managed to reduce the typical 140 liters of water needed to make a single pair of jeans down to just one liter. And even with that remarkable reduction in water usage, the factory still filters and recycles 98 percent of the water, with the remaining two percent being evaporated. That makes it a zero-discharge facility.

Chemicals are still a part of producing the denim, but J.Crew and Madewell's Fair Trade Certified denim have reduced the use of them by 65%. Rather than using harsh chemical methods to achieve different washes and styles, they use less harmful techniques like stone washing.

Running any factory consumes energy, but Saitex is extremely smart about reducing its use. Everything from renewable energy sources to clever techniques like hang-drying denim and using recycled heat from hot factory machinery has contributed to the reduction of energy consumption by more than 13 million kilowatts to date. That's equivalent to taking 2,000 cars off the road.

What does the Fair Trade certification really mean?

Fair Trade USA holds both manufacturing facilities and brands accountable for meeting certain standards of welfare. While underpaid and overworked employees is an unfortunate reality in many factories, Fair Trade manufacturers must ensure safe working environments, livable wages, equal pay for women, and benefits like maternity leave and paid leave.

Brands, on the other hand, must help to support this. For every Fair Trade Certified product sold, J.Crew and Madewell will donate a percentage directly to the workers, who then have the power to delegate what the money will be spent in their community — whether it be housing, schools, or infrastructures like bridges and power lines.

Just like the name suggests, it's fair for all parties involved. Factory workers get the opportunity to create better lives for themselves and their families, consumers get great quality denim that they can look good in and feel good ethically about owning, and, of course, the J.Crew Group makes a profit.

fair trade

Starting at $59.50 on J.Crew and $69.50 on Madewell, together the Fair Trade Certified collections feature 31 pieces. In addition to jeans for men and women, you'll also find denim jackets, overalls, shorts, and skirts for women.

If you want to help sustain the environment and support the people that produce the products you buy, Fair Trade Certified denim is one great way to do it.

Mueller's findings in the Russia probe could reportedly be delivered as soon as next week

Robert Mueller

  • Attorney General William Barr is ready to announce the end of the Russia investigation as early as next week, CNN reported on Wednesday.
  • Previous reporting indicated that before he was confirmed as attorney general last week, Barr had begun planning how to rein in Robert Mueller, the special counsel leading the investigation.
  • Barr said at his confirmation hearing last month that instead of sending Mueller's report to Congress he would send his own summary of Mueller's findings.
  • Barr has described Mueller's investigation into whether the president obstructed justice as "legally insupportable" but did not commit to recusing himself from overseeing the special counsel.
  • Legal experts said that a report from Mueller would not necessarily signify the end of the Russia investigation, adding that there are still multiple ongoing court cases and cooperating witnesses stemming from it.

Attorney General William Barr is gearing up to announce the end of the special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia investigation as soon as next week, CNN reported on Wednesday. Barr is also said to be planning to submit a summary of Mueller's findings soon afterward.

According to CNN, before his confirmation last week, Barr had begun planning how to take control of the investigation. He was reportedly focused on two decisions: how much information to report to Congress about Mueller's findings, and who the deputy attorney general would be. (Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general overseeing Mueller, has said he plans to step down after the investigation.)

Barr had his sights set on Jeffrey Rosen, the deputy transportation secretary, to replace Rosenstein, CNN said. On Tuesday night, President Donald Trump nominated Rosen.

Despite his controversial comments about Mueller's probe, Barr did not commit to recusing himself

william barr 2

In the weeks leading up to his highly anticipated testimony, Barr drew sharp scrutiny over a memo he wrote last year arguing that Mueller's investigation into whether Trump obstructed justice is "legally unsupportable" and should not be sanctioned by the Justice Department.

At his confirmation hearing last month, Barr said he wrote the memo — which he sent to the White House, the Justice Department, and lawyers representing other defendants in the Russia investigation — because he was concerned that Mueller's obstruction inquiry was based on an overly broad interpretation of the law and could have far-reaching ramifications.

Asked whether he would commit to making any report Mueller produces available to Congress and the public, Barr said it would not be made public. Instead, he told lawmakers, the public would see Barr's summary of the special counsel's findings.

One former senior Justice Department official who worked closely with Mueller when he was the FBI director told INSIDER that Barr's comments about Mueller's obstruction inquiry were a "red flag."

"If I'm reading the attorney general's summary of Mueller's findings, the first thing I'm going to look for is what Barr says — or doesn't say — about the obstruction case," this person said. "The good thing about the obstruction probe is that the public already knows a lot of what Mueller was investigating through Trump's public statements and media reports. It'll be interesting to see how much of that makes it into Barr's summary."

When lawmakers asked Barr whether he would recuse himself from overseeing the Russia investigation in light of the memo he sent last year, Barr said he would seek the advice of Justice Department ethics officials but did not commit to following it.

Barr said that he is friends with Mueller and that he didn't think the special counsel would embark on a "witch hunt," as Trump and his allies have claimed. Barr also pledged to notify Congress if he denied Mueller any resources or other requests.

A Mueller report does not signal the end of the Russia probe

michael cohen

Legal experts said that the submission of Mueller's findings to Congress would not necessarily signal the end of the investigation.

There are several pending court cases and reported indictments related to the investigation that could soon drop. Among other things, a federal judge recently voided the former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort's plea deal with prosecutors, who are said to be weighing whether to put Manafort on trial again.

Mueller has also referred some cases that fell outside the scope of his appointment to other DOJ offices.

One of those investigations — now being handled by the Manhattan US Attorney's Office — centers on Trump's role in several hush-money payments made before the 2016 election to women who said they had affairs with him, and whether those payments violated campaign-finance laws.

Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer and longtime fixer, pleaded guilty in that investigation, as well as in Mueller's inquiry. Cohen is cooperating with prosecutors.

Cohen is set to testify before several congressional committees about his involvement in the payments and the Trump Organization's push at the height of the campaign to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. He had been scheduled to start a three-year prison sentence in March, but a federal judge on Wednesday pushed the date back to May 6.

Rick Gates, the deputy Trump campaign chairman and a former associate of Manafort's, is also cooperating with prosecutors, as is Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser.

Last month, prosecutors also charged the longtime GOP strategist Roger Stone with obstruction, making false statements, and witness tampering.

Stone pleaded not guilty to all seven felony counts and said he intended to go to trial. He said he would not cooperate with prosecutors against Trump but signaled that he would be open to talking to them about others involved in the Russia investigation.

How to close apps on the Apple Watch, and other troubleshooting tips

apple watch apps

  • Close apps on the Apple Watch by pressing the side button and swiping left on recently opened apps.
  • Resolutions for problematic Apple Watch apps (from freezing to closing unexpectedly) include force quitting and uninstalling and reinstalling the app.
  • There are better ways to conserve Apple Watch battery than closing apps — which may not be saving you battery in the first place.

Whether for the satisfaction of decluttering or for the perceived notion of conserving battery life (a point that has been debunked, though that won't stop me from swiping away — idle apps, begone!), closing apps on your Apple Watch is as straightforward as closing them on your iPhone.

Here, we walk through how to close apps on the Apple Watch and a few general troubleshooting tips for when apps on the watch aren't working.

How to close apps on Apple Watch

apple watch

  1. Press the side button to show the Dock of your open apps.
  2. If no apps are open, you'll see the below message that reads "Recently used apps appear here." Otherwise, you'll see a list of windows representing various apps (as depicted above). You can scroll through this list by swiping up or down on the watch display or by turning the digital crown.

    apple watch
  3. Swipe left on any open apps you want to close. This will move the window to the left and reveal a red "X."

    apple watch apps
  4. Tap the "X" to close the app.

Troubleshooting for apps that quit unexpectedly, freeze, or won't open

Apple Support offers numerous tips for apps on its various devices. Below, we detail a few of those tips for how to troubleshoot problematic apps specific to the Apple Watch:

  1. Force quit the app by pressing and holding the side button. This will pull up the watch's power options. Press and hold the digital crown to finish quitting the app.
  2. Restart your Apple Watch by pressing and holding the side button, dragging the button across the "Power Off" option, then pressing and holding the side button until you see the Apple logo. To force restart (as a last resort and only if your watch isn't responding and not currently updating), press and hold the side button and digital crown, and release when you see the Apple logo (at least 10 seconds).
  3. Ensure you have the latest version of watchOS.
  4. Delete and reinstall the app by opening the Watch app on your iPhone. Tap the "My Watch" tab and select the app you want to remove under "Installed on Apple Watch." Turn off "Show App on Apple Watch" to remove the app. To reinstall, scroll down to "Available Apps" and tap Install.
  5. If all else fails, contact the app developer. Use Apple support if it's an Apple app or, if it's made by a third party, contact the app developer.

How to conserve battery on Apple Watch

Closing apps won't extend your Apple device's battery life, according to Wired. However, Apple does offer several tips for "maximizing battery life and lifespan" on its devices, including updating your software and turning on Power Saving Mode. Here's how to do those two things on the Apple Watch

  1. Make sure your software is up to date. You can do this by opening the Watch app on your phone, select the "My Watch" tab, tap "General," then "Software Update."
  2. Turn on Power Saving Mode when doing running or walking workouts. This will disable the heart rate sensor, which preserves battery life however calorie counts might not be as accurate. To turn on Power Saving Mode, open the Watch app on your iPhone, tap the Workout app and switch on Power Saving Mode.

These cleverly designed women's work pants use your own body heat to smooth wrinkles – and they're worth the $145

  • Ministry of Supply's Skinny Kinetic Pants ($145) fix their own wrinkles by redirecting your body heat, and they stretch without losing shape.
  • I tested them out, and they hold up to their promises: wrinkle-free and flexible with a slimming silhouette. In terms of fit, I could have sized down, but most reviewers found them true to size.
  • Ministry of Supply has also produced similarly modernized versions of the button-down (the Apollo 3) and suit (the Kinetic suit), the latter of which is so comfortable two people have run marathons in it.

If you've ever woken up to discover that somehow each and every piece of your closet has become wrinkled overnight before a 9 a.m. meeting, you're going to like the sound of Ministry of Supply's new Kinetic pants.

Like everything the performance workwear company designs, the Kinetic line is smarter than your average piece of clothing. Made from resilient Japanese wrap-knit Kinetic fabric, they stretch without losing shape. Due to an inventive eight-panel design, a stretch waistband and ergonomic side seams, the pants are easy and comfortable to move in. They're moisture wicking and water repellent thanks to a hydrophilic interior (which pulls moisture away from the body), and a hydrophobic exterior (which helps to evaporate moisture). They're also machine-washable. But the real standout feature may be their built-in fail-safe against wrinkles: rather than requiring a hot iron or harmful chemicals, Ministry of Supply's Kinetic pants redirect your own body heat to release and relax wrinkles, so they're gone within 15 minutes.

The result is a pair of $145 sleek work pants that stretch without losing shape, virtually never wrinkle, and repel potential nightmares like spilled coffee.

women s skinny kinetic pants black women s pants 3605422538827_2000x

If these elegant-looking pants sound more like a science experiment to you than a workwear purchase, you wouldn't be entirely incorrect; the company was born at MIT and has since enlisted both MIT scientists and NASA to re-imagine closet staples such as the button-up, later creating suits (the Kinetic suit specifically) so comfortable that two people have now run marathons in them as publicity stunts. The primary directive of Ministry of Supply is elegance made radically comfortable.

I had a chance to test-drive the Kinetic Pants in the Skinny silhouette to see if they could stand up to their claims. In the past, the Insider Picks team has been impressed by Ministry of Supply's cult-favorite men's dress shirt, wrinkle-free suittheir Kinetic dress, and pretty much every other piece we've judged. They also make one of my all-time favorite button-downs.

In person, the Kinetic Pants stand up to their claims. Even when crammed in my purse for most of the day, their wrinkles released almost immediately after sliding them on. The material was breathable during the day – including my 20-minute walk to and from the subway station – and didn't lose its shape. They were moisture-wicking, and water droplets pooled and slid off the exterior. For someone who prioritizes comfort and convenience almost as strongly as the overall look, machine-washability is also a huge plus.

Screen Shot 2018 09 14 at 3.52.18 PM

My only complaint is that, while most reviewers found the pair to fit true to size, I probably could have sized down for a better fit, especially given the stretch waistband. (For reference, I typically wear either a 26 or 27, and I opted for a size 4 in the Kinetics.) However, even though I could have gotten a smaller size, the fit itself was still tapered and slimming.

Some reviewers mentioned a "swish" sound when their legs touched throughout the day, and while this wasn't frequent enough to bother me, it may be good to note if you're sensitive about that semi-technical fabric sound. If that's the case, check out MM. Lafleur's Foster Pants, which we also loved.

All in all, Ministry of Supply's latest workwear staple is a good option for anyone looking for a flattering, low-maintenance pair of work pants that work smarter rather than harder. They'll stretch with you, wick away moisture, survive a quick coffee spill without missing a beat, and will even use your own body heat to make sure you're never wrinkled in a morning meeting again. If that's worth $145 to you, they're worth considering.

Spanx is best known for its shapewear, but its leggings are the real unsung heroes — we asked 4 women to try different styles

spanx leggings review 2

Over the course of 21 years, Spanx has firmly entrenched itself into popular culture and become synonymous with looking and feeling confident in your evening dress.

Though it's usually associated with smoothing, panty line-eliminating shapewear, another part of its business — which has expanded far and wide to include activewear, swimwear, and men's underwear— is quietly raved about, too.

Spanx leggings have earned their own share of fans because they feature the same comfort and flattering look of the famous shapewear, but take everyone's favorite form of pants-that-aren't-really-pants.

spanx leggings review 4

A few of the most popular Spanx legging styles are the Faux Leather Leggings ($98), Faux Leather Moto Leggings ($110), and the Look At Me Now Seamless Leggings ($68).

The sleek and slick Faux Leather Leggings are slimming and make an ordinary outfit instantly more edgy, while the Moto version turns the edge up further with its textured moto seams. Though you'd expect these styles to be uncomfortable or restrictive, they're quite stretchy and have control tops.

Meanwhile, the stretchy knit Seamless Leggings are an attractive legging basic you'll default to on the weekends, but won't feel ashamed to wear out of the apartment.

In total, Spanx sells nearly 40 styles of leggings, from "Jean-ish" to luxe velvet to active. They run from $60 to $130, with most styles priced around $100 to $110 — on par with premium athleisure brands. The Spanx difference, however, benefits from a design philosophy that has both comfort and style in mind, and executes through features like shaping waistbands and the absence of center seams.

We tried a few pairs of Spanx leggings to see for ourselves what the big deal was and came away impressed with their fit, quality construction, and flattering style. You can read more about our experiences, then shop all of Spanx's leggings below.

EveryWear Mesh Side Stripe Leggings

EveryWear Mesh Side Stripe Leggings, $110, available at Spanx

For both stylistic and functional, breathability purposes, I love leggings with mesh details or panels, so I was immediately drawn to this pair. They have a lengthening and slimming mesh stripe down each leg that somewhat mimics the popular side stripe pant look of the moment, but has its own unique effect.

Your legs and butt will look great in these leggings because the fabric compresses and hugs your curves, but they'll also feel surprisingly comfortable the whole time. They're stretchy, and though I wouldn't work out in them, they easily adapted to the unexpected squats and light jogs that can be required during an active day in the city.

The other parts of the comfort equation were the soft, antimicrobial finish and breathable fabric that allowed me to wear these leggings from day to night. —Connie Chen, Insider Picks reporter

Look At Me Now Cropped Seamless Leggings

Look At Me Now Cropped Seamless Leggings, $68-$72, available at Spanx

I'm firmly in camp "leggings as pants," and this semi-high-waisted pair has everything going for it. The extreme opacity means I never have to worry when I  bend over to pick something up (which is often, I have a cat and a slippery phone),  and the seamless construction is incredibly smoothing and comfortable. There's no elastic strip in the waistband, so there's no digging. The waist is basically just a continuation of the leggings themselves.

They're also not as tight as Spanx shapewear, but they still hold me in without pressing too hard anywhere. I don't wear these to work, but I do wear them as often as possible when I'm not in the office. I'm also 5-foot-1, so cropped leggings fit me perfectly as regular-length pairs.  —Sally Kaplan, Insider Picks editor

EveryWear Icon Leggings

EveryWear Icon Leggings, $110, available at Spanx

I was prepared not to love Spanx’s leggings. I spend most of my time in athletic leggings, and I had decided I'd outgrown athleisure pairs. I stand corrected.

The Every-Wear leggings are flattering and slimming, and surprisingly thin enough to wear all day comfortably. The four-way stretch lets you move around unencumbered. The design is smart: the absence of a center-seam and a waistband-free construction makes the transition from what is essentially shapewear to a more natural second skin (and no muffin top). It hit at my natural waist, and the seams in back work both functionally and as a kind of slimming and uplifting contour.

All in all, they’re movement-friendly, make for a lean and streamlined silhouette, and avoid most of my athleisure complaints. $110 is expensive, but I’d personally rather own one pair of these than three inferior pairs. Mara Leighton, Insider Picks reporter

This energy drink uses coffee, coconut oil, and lactose-free whey to keep caffeine jitters and sugar crashes at bay — and it actually tastes good

kitu

  • Energy drinks and bottled coffees are popular ways to get your caffeine fix, but they're full of unwanted sugars, calories, and artificial ingredients that can leave you with a sugar crash.
  • After falling asleep in his classes due to a demanding student-athlete schedule in college, Jordan DeCicco went to find a healthy beverage that could give him lasting energy — but none of the options out there fit his standards.
  • Kitu Life Super Coffee was born out of his need for a better energy drink.
  • The founders pitched the company on "Shark Tank," and while they didn't get a deal, consumers (and other investors) are loving their Super Coffees.

Frappuccinos. Matcha lattes. Red Bull. A shot of espresso. Most of us have a go-to energy drink we rely on to help us power through long days, late nights, and early mornings. The problem is, most of the bottled coffees and energy drinks you find lining grocery shelves are loaded with artificial ingredients and tons of sugar — a recipe for a dreaded sugar crash.

That exact issue is what led Jordan DeCicco to found Kitu Life. As a collegiate student athlete drained from early morning workouts, Jordan found himself falling asleep in class. Dissatisfied with the energy drink options at his campus store — sugary, caloric beverages with little nutritional value — Jordan set out to make a better drink with ingredients you can actually pronounce like organic coffee, coconut oil, and whey protein. With just a blender, Jordan started whipping up batches of Super Coffee in his dorm room — it wasn't long before his teammates, coaches, professors and classmates became interested in his healthy energy drinks and started buying the beverages themselves. The campus buzz was what prompted Jordan to get his older brothers on board and take Kitu Life's Super Coffee to the masses.

Jordan's dorm-room dream made it to the big screen, when the brothers pitched Super Coffee to "Shark Tank" last winter. Though they left the tank without a deal, their exposure on the show garnered plenty of online sales and attracted interest from investors. Last year, Kitu Life made over $1 million in revenue with their delicious, better-for-you Super Coffees.

41544547_483896835351644_8711826542124046119_n

What's in Super Coffee?

Super Coffee is a ready-to-drink beverage that provides lasting, healthy energy. A 12-ounce bottle boasts 200 mg of caffeine (the same amount as a regular 16-ounce coffee), 10 grams of protein, only one gram of carbs, no sugar, and just 80 calories. To compare, take a look at the nutrition facts on a bottled Starbucks Frappuccino: 95 grams of caffeine, 40 grams of sugar, 46 grams of carbs, and 250 calories — that's almost (or more) than a day's worth of added sugar as recommended by the American Heart Association

What sets Super Coffee apart from the other bottled coffees out there is its unique list of ingredients, which, when blended together, taste great and make you feel even better. They start off with organic Colombian coffee, one that's not treated with pesticides, fertilizers, herbicides, or any other toxins that taint the beans' taste, or more importantly, are detrimental to your health. MCT oil (medium chain triglyceride oil) derived from coconuts provides healthy fats, giving you sustainable energy without the sugar crash. To get a sweet taste without any sugar, they use Monk Fruit, a no-sugar, no-calorie, all-natural sweetener. For that creamy taste, they rely on a lactose-free whey protein. This provides the same creamy consistency as milk without the added sugars and unhealthy fats. This not only saves calories, but makes the beverage easier to digest — especially for those who suffer from lactose intolerance.

Does it actually taste good?

Plain and simple, yes. Plenty of beverages that are touted as healthy don't deliver on the taste factor — but in my experience, that's not the case with Super Coffee. The DeCiccos knew that in order for Super Coffee to work, people had to actually like the taste of the beverage as much as, if not more than, they liked the ingredient list.

Super Coffee offers four flavors: Creamy Black, Vanilla Bean, Smooth Mocha, and Maple Hazelnut. All are gluten-free, lactose-free, soy-free, and non-gmo, but more importantly super creamy, sweet, and delicious. They're just indulgent enough, but still manage to be light — so you feel fulfilled without going into a food coma. My personal favorite is the Smooth Mocha —  when poured over ice, or sipped straight from the bottle, it tastes like a grown-up version of chocolate milk, making it a delicious upgrade to your plain, black morning coffee.

The best table saws you can buy

the best table saws

  • For anyone who must cut 2-by-4s, make precise cuts on decorative wood, or anything in between, a table saw is a must-have tool.
  • With the highly portable DeWalt DWE7491RS, you can take your table saw to any job site and still have all the power you need to finish ahead of schedule.

If you like the satisfaction you receive from completing DIY projects, you probably already have learned the most important part of having success with your projects: Always have the right tool on hand. Nothing throws off your DIY results quicker than trying to use a tool that makes the task much harder than it needs to be.

If your DIY projects involve cutting wood, you could cut every piece by hand. Or you could invest in a table saw, which makes precise cuts quickly and efficiently. You’re still going to want to measure twice so you only have to cut once, but that one cut will be incredibly fast with a table saw.

A table saw uses a fast spinning blade to cut wood quickly and accurately. Unlike other kinds of saws where the blade moves and the wood stays in place, with a table saw, the blade spins in place, and you’ll move the piece of wood across the blade. When shopping for a table saw, it’s important to find one that matches your needs.

Bench top table saws, which are also called portable table saws, are small enough to carry from site to site, but you’ll have to provide a stand or table yourself. It’s good for use at home, but it’s not a heavy-duty type of table saw.

In contrast, a contractor table saw is a larger unit with a more powerful motor. These saws often are attached to a frame with wheels, so you can roll the saw around the job site.

Lastly, cabinet table saws are large units that are designed to stay in your wood shop. They’re built inside a sturdy cabinet, providing plenty of work space. Based on what kinds of jobs you're doing and how often you do them, you may need a basic bench top table saw or a more advanced contractor or cabinet table saw.

As you’re comparing different table saws, it helps to understand each of the different parts of these power tools.

The blade is one of the most important parts of the table saw. Blades of 10 or 12 inches in diameter are most common for table saws. A larger number of small teeth in the blade creates a finer cut. Large teeth result in a rougher, but faster, cut. As Home Depot says, having as many as 80 teeth in the blade will result in very fine cuts.

Other than the blade, the motor is the most important aspect of a table saw because it determines the speed at which the blade spins. A higher power motor works fast and cuts through hard wood easily. Motors for table saws typically range between 1 and 3 horsepower. Another measure of the motor occurs in amps, where 10 to 20 amps is common.

Some high-end table saws have a dust collection system, which automatically pulls the sawdust into a collection bag as you cut the wood. The fence on the table saw helps you guide the wood and make a straight cut, while the miter gauge helps you make cross cuts or angled cuts.

Most table saws use some sort of guard over the blade as a safety mechanism. It also keeps dust and wood particles from flying back at the operator. Other safety mechanisms protect against kickbacks, using an anti-kickback pawl that stops a piece of wood when it attempts to kick back toward the operator, according to Lowes.

With all that in mind, we've rounded up the best table saws you can buy no matter your budget or needs.

Here are the best table saws you can buy:

Read on in the slides below to check out our top picks.

The best table saw overall

Why you'll love it: The DeWalt DWE7491RS table saw has the perfect mix of portability and power, allowing it to fulfill almost any woodworking job.

For contractors, the ability to move a table saw and perform cuts wherever needed is a key feature, but you don’t want to sacrifice power for portability. That makes the DeWalt DWE7491RS table saw a smart choice for any kind of work.

Boris the Woodworker calls the DeWalt DWE7491RS the ideal table saw for any kind of woodworking project, especially when you're working with hardwoods.

With a table size of 26 by 22 inches and a 32.5-inch rip capacity, the DeWalt saw is large enough to handle most jobs contractors or woodworkers will want to perform. The 10-inch carbide blade cuts through wood quickly and accurately with its 24 teeth.

It has a 15-amp motor, which is more than enough power. The saw can get a 3-1/8-inch depth-of-cut at an angle of 90 degrees and 2-1/4 inches deep at an angle of 45 degrees.

You can also connect the saw's 2-1/2-inch Dust Collection Port to a vacuum to get rid of all the dust and debris, making for an easy cleanup.

Moving this DeWalt table saw from site to site is a relatively easy process, thanks to the wheels on the stand. It does weigh 90 pounds, though, so it's not a light tool. Tool Box Buzz calls it one of the best mobile stands available on a table saw, making it perfect for contractors.

The Sharp Cut also likes this saw's versatility and ability to handle most woodworking tasks with ease. Most shoppers on Amazon give the table saw great reviews. The DeWalt saw has a 4.5-star average rating and an Amazon's Choice badge.

Pros: Plenty of power with a 15-amp motor, has the ability to handle large jobs versus other portable table saws, sturdy wheels on frame to roll it anywhere

Cons: Aluminum fence may not hold a perfect shape over time, pricey

The best gravity-rise table saw

Why you'll love it: The Bosch 4100-10 table saw has an impressive gravity-rise frame, allowing you to adjust the height of the saw to fit any job.

With a portable table saw, having a frame that's lightweight with a simple design is extremely important. The Bosch 4100-10 table saw has one of the best lightweight gravity-rise frames around, because you can adjust the height of the table saw to whatever is needed for a particular job. When not in use, the stand folds down to a dolly-like configuration so you can roll it easily.

The 15-amp saw delivers 4 horsepower and spins at 3,650 RPM (rotations per minute). The 10-inch Carbide-tipped blade cuts quickly and accurately through all kinds of wood. You get a decent-sized workspace, too, measuring 29 x 32 x 13.2 inches in size.

For safety, the saw has a Smart Guard System with a barrier guard and anti-kickback pawls to ensure that no wood comes flying at your face. Bosch also includes a SquareLock Rip Fence, a miter gauge, a push stick, a throat plate insert, a blade wrench, and an adjustment wrench.

One Amazon reviewer who goes by Amazon Bill says the gravity-rise stand is easy to use, as you can move the saw anywhere around the house or at the job site.

Tool Guyd says the primary improvement in this saw versus the older version it replaced is a reduction in the weight of the gravity-rise rolling stand, which is helpful in increasing the portability of this contractor saw.

Bosch reviewer Jamnmark says this table saw can make every kind of cut required for a variety of jobs, all on a sturdy and portable stand, and other shoppers on Amazon also review the saw favorably.

Pros: Easy to move stand that folds down flat when the job is finished, adjustable height frame, table saw is able to handle a variety of cuts successfully

Cons: Not the sturdiest materials in frame, not the most powerful saw, pricey

A worker at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, was killed on Tuesday when a tire on which he was doing maintenance work exploded, the Associated Press reported.

The incident took place Tuesday evening around 11:30 p.m. local time inside a workshop in the airport's terminal building, the local CBS News affiliate, KCBS reported.

The force of the blast ruptured a pipe in the workshop and set off its sprinkler system but did not have any effect on airport operations beyond that.

I never travel without this $17 backpack — it fits a ton but can still fold up into the palm of my hand

Gonex backpack review amazon

  • The Gonex Packable Travel Backpack is a lightweight travel bag that, in my experience, has lived up to its amazing reviews on Amazon.
  • The nylon backpack is durable, spacious, and small enough to fit into my hand when condensed into its built-in carrying case.
  • The 35-liter backpacks come in five colors, and they each cost just $17.

I may not be the queen of international travel, but I am basically royalty when it comes to making split-second travel decisions and jumping on a last minute flight. More often than not, these instantaneous adventures come at a steep cost, leaving little to no room for annoying charges like seat upgrades or bag fees.

Part of the issue of limited planning time is the lack of thought put into packing appropriately. Most airlines charge customers extra if they exceed the 50-pound weight limit on bags, and my inability to place “just the necessities” into my suitcase have caused me to fall victim to a fee on one too many occasions.

Since the fall of 2017, I haven’t incurred a single overweight fee thanks to an Amazon purchase that I now couldn’t live without: the Gonex backpack ($17).

Packable bags have been popular for years, but rarely can you find quality backpacks for a decent price. For less than $20, you can get this travel wizard— used by everyone from daily commuters to avid hikers — to keep as a backup for suitcase overflow or to use as your main travel bag.

I purchased mine prior to my cross-country move upon recognizing that I had accumulated way more stuff than I thought was humanly possible. Based on customer reviews, I hoped it would be a good way to carry a few extra trinkets on board without having to pay for an additional bag. Its real value arose when my suitcase weighed three pounds over and I was faced with the decision to pay the overcharge fee, ditch my not-so-important objects, or find another place to shove them. The mostly-packed backpack was able to fit that extra three pounds and nearly saved me from my travel turmoil.

Amazon Gonex travel backpack review

The outright volume of the bag is an obvious attraction, but the quality of the material holding it together is even more of a reason to make this your next Amazon buy. It has been tossed around and shoved in the overhead compartment a minimum of 30 times and I have yet to see any wear on the nylon exterior. If a tear does happen, Gonex has a 12-month warranty to ensure that you won’t be left hanging.

The mesh shoulder straps make wearing the bag surprisingly comfortable no matter how much you pack in the multi-compartment carryall. I take full advantage of the front strap so that my back doesn't feel the pain that comes with an overweight load. I may look like an exploration guru while trekking through the airport like this, but at least I'm not uncomfortable.

When I’m not carrying the Gonex bag as my main backpack during travel, I still keep it folded up in my purse for the occasional overpacking situation. The front pocket acts as a case and the entire backpack can be rolled into a pouch small enough to fit into my hand. In other words, I could fit a bag in my bag without notice  — a nifty draw if you ask me.

Sometimes, the outer zipper will get stuck on the material when opening or closing the backpack, but with a little jiggle, the zipper releases without much hassle. This small issue is far outweighed by the number of great qualities the backpack has.

The fact that it comes in five colors and costs only $16.99 means that it can work for nearly everybody, and if you haven’t gathered this by now, I would recommend the Gonex bag to anyone looking for a lightweight option for traveling or commuting purposes.

I visited the Chanel store in SoHo the day after Karl Lagerfeld died, and it was clear why the brand has been an icon for nearly 100 years

CHANEL SoHo

  • Renowned fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld died on Tuesday, February 19, at the age of 85.
  • Lagerfeld was well-known for his role as the creative director of the Chanel and Fendi luxury brands.
  • One day after his death, I visited the Chanel storefront in SoHo to see if they had any sort of tribute set up for the fashion icon.
  • The store's artful yet classic layout and blend of both historic and trendy pieces contributed to its feel of timeless luxury.

At his time of death, Karl Lagerfeld had worked with the Chanel brand for 36 years.

The Chanel company was founded by Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel in 1910, but Lagerfeld, who joined the company 1983 and had a wide impact on the fashion industry at large, is credited with modernizing the failing brand and carrying it into the 21st century.

On a snowy Wednesday, I took the train uptown to SoHo’s Chanel store. The SoHo location is one of three Chanel boutiques in Manhattan, along with the Madison Ave. store and the recently unveiled 57th St. location. I was curious to see if the store would have any kind of tribute displayed for the late fashion icon and to get a sense of how the store felt in person.

Overall, the store’s variety of high-end products and thoughtful layout contributed to its overall feel of luxury. I found that inventory was displayed not just as products for browsing but rather as pieces of art.

Here's what the SoHo Chanel store looks like.

We might get the Mueller report as early as next week, but the Russia probe is nowhere near finished

Robert Mueller

  • Attorney General William Barr is reportedly preparing to submit a summary of the special counsel Robert Mueller's report to Congress as early as next week.
  • But Justice Department veterans told INSIDER that even with the release of a Mueller report, the Russia probe and investigations related to it are far from over.
  • There are still myriad court cases, cooperation agreements, potential future indictments, and related investigations being handled by other US attorneys' offices that will continue well past the Mueller report's release.

On Wednesday, we saw the latest in a string of media reports over the last year predicting an imminent release of a final report from the special counsel Robert Mueller on his findings in the FBI's Russia investigation.

For almost two years, Mueller has been investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 US election, whether President Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Moscow, and whether Trump sought to obstruct justice when he fired FBI Director James Comey. The FBI launched the Russia probe in the summer of 2016, and Mueller began overseeing it after Comey's ouster.

CNN reported Wednesday afternoon that the new attorney general, William Barr, is preparing to announce the end of the Russia investigation as early as next week. Citing people familiar with Barr's plans, CNN also reported that the attorney general is planning to submit a summary of Mueller's findings to Congress soon.

But Justice Department veterans cautioned to INSIDER that the release of Barr's summary of Mueller's findings does not necessarily signify the end of the Russia investigation. They pointed, in particular, to a plethora of court cases, cooperation agreements, and potential future indictments that could drop well after Barr submits his report to Congress.

Here are some of the major threads that experts say will continue past the release of the Mueller report:

  • Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort could face new charges after a federal judge nullified his plea deal with Mueller in light of allegations that he lied to prosecutors after agreeing to cooperate.
  • The longtime GOP strategist Roger Stone was indicted on seven felony counts of obstruction, false statements, and witness tampering last month. He pleaded not guilty to all counts and intends to go to trial. He has also not ruled out cooperating with prosecutors against other individuals— but not Trump — ensnared in the Russia probe.
  • The far-right commentator Jerome Corsi told reporters that prosecutors had informed him that he would be indicted for lying to the FBI.
  • Former Trump campaign deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates is still cooperating with multiple investigations.
  • Former national security adviser Michael Flynn is still cooperating with multiple investigations.
  • Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, is still cooperating with multiple investigations.
  • The Manhattan US attorney's office is probing Trump's involvement in several hush-money payments during the election to women who say they had affairs with him. Cohen, Trump's former bookkeeper, and several Trump Organization executives are cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
  • New York federal prosecutors recently subpoenaed the Trump inaugural committee for documents related to its finances. The committee has long been under scrutiny from investigators examining whether foreign governments — like Russia, the UAE, and others — illegally funneled money into the operation to influence White House policy.
  • Paul Erickson, a GOP strategist and the boyfriend of the Russian spy Maria Butina, was charged by the Justice Department in an unrelated fraud scheme, and if he strikes a plea deal, it could open up new investigative threads for prosecutors.
  • The House Intelligence Committee recently sent over the transcripts of testimony from several individuals lawmakers believe may have lied to Congress, including Donald Trump Jr., the Trump associate Erik Prince, and others.
  • Mueller is said to be probing the Trump campaign's ties to the National Rifle Association, and prosecutors were asking questions about it as recently as December.
  • Mueller is locked in a legal battle with an unknown foreign corporation that's fighting a grand-jury subpoena for documents and testimony.
  • Prosecutors are also in a court fight with another individual who's said to be fighting a separate grand-jury subpoena.
  • In January, Mueller's federal grand jury was extended for six months, so it could continue to meet and vote on criminal indictments.
  • The US attorney's office in Washington, DC, has stepped up on assisting Mueller's team with casework which will continue even after the release of a report. Some of those cases reportedly include Stone's, one involving a Russian social-media conspiracy, and the court battle with the unidentified foreign corporation.
