  • Don't overlook the smaller online startups as you shop on Cyber Monday this year.
  • Since many of these startups pride themselves on already-low prices on premium goods like jewelry, cookware, and shoes, they don't often run promotions.
  • Cyber Monday is one of the few times of the year when you can save on products and gifts from these unique, up-and-coming startups.
  • To potentially save more on Cyber Monday, you can visit Business Insider Coupons to find up-to-date promo codes for a range of online stores.

The past 10 years and the next 10 years of retail belong to the direct-to-consumer online startup. By reimagining how products are made and sold, startups challenge the old way of doing business.

Often times, the environment and worker livelihoods benefit from the innovative ways that startups operate. You, the customer, also benefit as these companies affect the way you get dressed in the morning, cook food at home, sleep, and more.

Amidst the chaos of large retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Target dominating Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals news, these startups are quietly offering deals as well. For some, this is the only time of the year when their products are discounted, so you should definitely take advantage of the rare opportunity.

If you're searching for a unique gift, you won't find any time better than now to find one and save money. We've also partnered with many of these startups to offer you exclusive reader discounts. Make sure to check back throughout the week as we add more deals.

A new Korean skin care company borne from a battle with cystic acne believes you only need 3 products to achieve clear skin

panacea main

  • We're often led to believe that the more products you slap on your face, the more effective they'll be.
  • Skin care brand Panacea supports the opposite: with only a few products — a cleanser ($24), moisturizer ($36), and sunscreen ($32)— you can have soft, hydrated, and protected skin.
  • It focuses on the contents, rather than the quantity of the skin care products, and uses cruelty-, paraben-, and sulfate-free ingredients to achieve natural, healthy results.
  • The simple, gender-neutral products streamline your daily skin care routine so you focus on the day ahead of you.
  • Right now through November 28, as a special Cyber Monday deal for Business Insider readers, take 20% off all orders with the code "HOLIDAY2018". Or, buy one Essentials Kit and get another kit for 30% off — your code will be automatically applied upon checkout.

Starting your day with purpose and intention is easier when you have fewer things trying to capture your attention all at once. This philosophy of simplicity drives decluttering guru Marie Kondo's organization empire, the morning routines of founders and executives, and clothing brands that, for once, are okay with customers buying just a few of their pieces, because those pieces are all they need.

Such simplicity is starting to extend into the beauty industry, but more so in the realm of ingredients (clean, natural, chemical-free) than the beauty routine itself. The Korean beauty world is notorious for espousing 10-step routines to hydrate, moisturize, tighten, and otherwise pamper your skin.

A new skin care company, Panacea, completely agrees that you should invest in beautiful, healthy skin, but believes you can pare your daily routine to just three (yes, three) essential products: a cleanser, a moisturizer, and a sunscreen.

Since it only has these three products, Panacea can focus with excruciating detail on the integrity of their ingredients. They're cruelty-, paraben-, and sulfate-free, containing natural ingredients like Laminaria japonica (a Japanese seaweed), fig extract, and sunflower oil.

panacea aegis kit

The routine, to be followed during the day and night, goes like this:

1. Cleanse with the Daily Facial Cleanser.

The foaming cleanser contains a gentle cleansing agent derived from coconut oil to draw out impurities, a "Moisture Shield Complex" with hyaluronic acid to nourish your skin, and antioxidants like green tea extract and vitamin E to moisturize and soften. Users who struggle with acne have seen a noticeable difference in their skin after using this smooth, non-drying cleanser.

2. Replenish with the Daily Facial Moisturizer.

Once your skin is cleansed, the next step is this lightweight moisturizer. It also contains the Moisture Shield Complex, in addition to shea butter to soften your skin, and Amaranthus caudatus to minimize the appearance of wrinkles. It both feels and smells refreshing, and it's not oily, which is especially welcome during the summer — because grease belongs on an indulgent slice of pizza, not on my face after I walk outside for five minutes.

3. Protect with the Daily Facial SPF.

Finish the routine off with the sunscreen, which is important to wear even if it's not sunny out (UV rays still penetrate through clouds). Panacea's scentless sunscreen has SPF 25 and broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection. Like the moisturizer, it's light and non-oily, with a number of beneficial ingredients. Among others, there's Houttuynia cordata extract, a Korean herb and natural antihistamine that is high in antioxidants; Cardiospermum flower extract, a soothing anti-inflammatory; and Portulaca Extract, a moisturizing and itch-relieving antihistamine.

panacea moisturizer lifestyle

Panacea was cofounded by Terry Lee, the former COO of MeUndies, after his own battle with cystic acne. As he worked on improving his skin by trying out different products, he also began streamlining the rest of his morning routine and discovered the power of beginning each day on the right foot.

Panacea combines these two journeys — better skin care and routine with intent — by condensing the traditional, intimidating multi-step skin care process into a more manageable yet equally effective one that can be done in a few minutes.

Stepping away from the gendered world of skin care and further simplifying things, Panacea intends for its products to be gender-neutral. People of all genders can benefit from its natural skin care products because the desire for nicer skin and a good start to the day is pretty much universal. Now, you don't have to sneak pumps of your partner or sibling's cleanser or lotion.

Panacea's mission is as refreshing as its products. I think I let out an audible sigh of relief upon seeing I only needed to manage three steps every morning and night in order to get better skin. Each one feels light and soothing thanks to natural, chemical-free formulations, showing that you don't have to be aggressive or complex in the way you treat your skin at the beginning and end of your day.

Shop all Panacea products here: Daily Facial Cleanser ($24), Daily Facial Moisturizer ($36)Daily Facial SPF ($32). Or buy them together in the Essentials Kit ($74).

Everlane's rare 'Choose What You Pay' sale is a different kind of Cyber Monday deal

$

The Insider Picks team writes about stuff we think you'll like. Business Insider has affiliate partnerships, so we get a share of the revenue from your purchase.

everlane shoes what you pay

  • Everlane is one of a handful of companies not to participate in sitewide discounts to celebrate Black Friday.
  • Each year, the company donates part of its proceeds via a charitable Black Friday Fund. This year, they're helping to remove 20,000 pounds of plastic off beaches with a $260,000 donation to Surfrider.
  • The company has also issued a rare 'Shoes' What You Pay sale edit that means you can pick up five Italian leather women's shoe styles at a rare discount while supplies last — including the cult-favorite Day Heel (originally $150) for as little as $98.

Every year while retailers — both big and small— cut prices by up to 70% to kick off Black Friday and the beginning of the holiday shopping season, Everlane is one of a handful of companies to do things differently.

For the last few years, Everlane has donated a portion of its Black Friday proceeds to a cause that it (and presumably its shoppers) cares about. This year, the company is donating $260,000 to Surfrider to remove 20,000 pounds of plastic from our beaches. It's a natural extension of the startup's recent ReNew line of outerwear made from recycled plastics, and their pledge to eliminate virgin plastics from their supply chain by 2021.

During the holiday weekend, your order will equal $13 donated to Surfrider, or, more precisely, one order will equal one pound of plastic removed. Coming off the heels of the discovery of a whale with over 1,000 pieces of plastic in its stomach in late November, it's a good time to get the canonical essentials or holiday gifts you were going to pick up next month anyway.

Everlane's products are assumedly already at their lowest possible price thanks to the company's transparent pricing business model, and steep annual sales don't make sense when you're technically on sale every day of the year.

However, shoppers can still find Black Friday/Cyber Monday-esque discounts on some of the company's best-selling shoes in the just-launched 'Shoes What You Pay' sale

choose what you pay everlane

The 2018 'Shoes' What You Pay sale is basically Everlane's Cyber Monday match-up. It follows the 'Choose What You Pay' model where shoppers opt to pay one of three staggered prices (low, medium, high) for a product Everlane has an excess of according to their own ability.

The 'Shoes' What You Pay Sale consists of rare discounts on five of the company's Italian leather shoes for women — including the Day Heel and Modern Loafer. Since the sale is meant to make room for new arrivals, it will only go on for as long as there is stock left.

If you're looking for inspiration of which one to pick up, we've ranked Everlane's five best-selling shoes based on comfort in the past.

One tip: When in doubt, pick up anything from the Day shoe family. We're personally partial to the Day Heel or the unfortunately not included Day Glove, which we've ranked the #1 most comfortable flats you can buy online, and I wear multiple times a week.

Right now, Everlane shoppers can pick up best-selling Everlane shoes at a discount, while also giving $13 of their purchase as a donation to Surfrider's plastic-free beaches initiative.

stranger things 2 `

  • Netflix's library of original content is continually expanding at a rapid pace.
  • Here, we rank all of Netflix's notable original shows by their critical reception on Rotten Tomatoes.

As Netflix's library of original content continues to expand, it's worthwhile to take stock of all that the service currently offers.

With popular shows like "Stranger Things" and "Big Mouth," Netflix has hit the mark with both critics and audiences.

But the service has also had its share of critical flops, including the Marvel series "Iron Fist" and the high school dramedy "Insatiable."

To figure out which Netflix original series are worth your time, we turned to the reviews aggregator Rotten Tomatoes to rank the shows by their composite critical reception.

We excluded any show that did not have enough reviews to receive a designation of "Fresh" or "Rotten." We also did not include children's shows, talk shows, docuseries, or shows that were continued from other networks, and we used audience scores to break any ties.

Here are 82 of Netflix's notable original shows, ranked from worst to best, according to critics:

casper mattress cyber monday 15% off

In the last few years, a lot of online mattress startups have popped up. They've taken out the middlemen and the accompanying costs of showrooms. As a result, the same or superior mattresses are offered for less money and hassle than the brick-and-mortar store.

Of the many startups out there, Casper may be king.

The company has become synonymous with successful online startups, and has expanded from its first mattress sale in 2014 to begin selling sheets (which we reviewed here), pillows (find our review here), and even dog beds. (you bet we had one of our dogs try the bed). It also doesn't hurt that every mattress comes with a 100-night money-back guarantee and a 10-year warranty, which is pretty much par for the course in the industry.

In other words, Casper is a grown-up cult-favorite, and the company owes a lot of that success to a really great mattress, the convenience of no-hassle home delivery, and pretty awesome prices.

On a regular day, you can get the company's best-seller, The Casper, from $595 for a twin size, and the streamlined Essential mattress from as low as $350. The upgraded high-end mattress, The Wave, comes in at $1,250 to start.

For Cyber Monday, Business Insider readers can get an exclusive 15% off any order with a mattress when they apply the code "BICM15" at checkout. So, for example, if you add a queen-size Casper Wave Mattress ($2,250) to your cart, you'll save $337.50 on your purchase.

If you've been meaning to get a new mattress — or bedding of any kind — now is a great time to act. Casper's prices are already low to remain competitive, and sales don't happen often.

Get 15% off any Casper order with a mattress with the code "BICM15"

Trump attacks GM, says they 'better damn well open a new plant' in Ohio after the automaker announces layoffs and factory shutdowns

  • President Donald Trump attacked General Motors over the automaker's announced shake-up.
  • GM will stop producing cars at the plants in Ohio, Michigan, and Ontario, Canada.
  • "They better damn well open a new plant there very quickly," Trump said, referring to the Ohio plant.
  • Trump previously promised that the jobs at the Ohio plant were "all coming back."

President Donald Trump shot back at General Motors on Monday after the automaker announced it would stop producing cars at three North American plants — two in the US — and lay off 15% of its salaried workforce.

Trump told The Wall Street Journal that the automaker should stop making cars in China and open a new plant in Ohio instead. The GM plant in Lordstown, Ohio, is one of the three factories that will no longer produce cars under the company's new plan.

"They better damn well open a new plant there very quickly," Trump told the Journal.

The president said he spoke with GM CEO Mary Barra on Sunday night about the cuts and offered a warning to the executive.

"I love Ohio. I told them, 'You're playing around with the wrong person,'" he said.

Trump has long promised to bring back manufacturing jobs to the Midwest. He held a rally near the GM plant in Ohio in 2017. At that time, GM had already made layoffs at the Lordstown plant and cut factory hours to just one shift. During the rally, Trump promised the jobs were "all coming back."

Trump was not the first politician to attack GM's decision: Ohio lawmakers from both sides of the aisle blasted the announcement.

In addition to the Ohio changes, GM will also cease production at plants in Michigan and Ontario, Canada. The company did not announce the exact fate of the workers at those plants, as the automaker must still negotiate a deal with the auto unions. In total, the three plants employ around 6,700 workers.

GM said the factory changes and workforce reductions were part of a long-term restructuring effort and declining demand for sedans. According to the company, the changes will save $4.5 billion by the end of 2020.

As Trump was departing the White House for Mississippi, the president also suggested to reporters that Barra could replace the Ohio factory's current production of the low-selling Chevrolet Cruze with other work.

"I think she's going to put something back in soon," Trump said. "That car is not selling, it's the Cruze, Chevy Cruze. It's not selling, but hopefully she's going to come back and put something."

DON'T MISS: 11 standout Cyber Monday deals on speakers — from the likes of Bose, Sonos, and JBL

Amazon Echo smart speaker

Amazon Echo 2nd-gen, $69 at Amazon (originally $99.99) [You save $30.99]

The Amazon Echo took the world by storm when it was first released in late 2014, and for good reason: It's considered to be the first smart speaker, and it features Amazon's digital assistant, Alexa.

The Echo is now on its second generation, and boasts a smaller footprint, better design, and improved audio, all while still offering the same "Skills" that any other Echo device has to show. For Cyber Monday, the Amazon Echo comes at $69, which is a hefty $30 off the original price of $99.

The second-generation Echo isn't the only Echo device getting discounts. Amazon has also discounted the cheaper All-New Echo Dot to $24, down from $49.99, and the Echo Spot down to $49.99, from $69.99.

We think the full-size Echo is the best deal for those looking to get started in Amazon's ecosystem, but the others are worth considering too.

Roku streaming stick

Roku Streaming Stick, $29.99 at Amazon (originally $49.99) [You save $29]

Smart TV platforms have been taking off, but not everyone has the cash to spend on a smart TV with built-in smart features. That is where devices like the Roku Streaming Stick come in, which brings smart TV features to a "dumb TV," and at a very low price, too. In fact, for Cyber Monday you can get the Roku Streaming Stick for $29.99, which is $20 off the original price of $49.99.

The Roku Streaming Stick is super easy to use. Simply plug it into your TV's HDMI port, then use the remote to download apps, stream content, and more.

Roku, in general, is considered to be one of the best smart TV platforms, and the easy-to-use remote certainly helps with that.

Bose SoundLink Micro portable Bluetooth speaker

Bose SoundLink Micro, $69 at Amazon (originally $99) [You save $30]

Perhaps you're more interested in a portable speaker than portable headphones. If that's the case, then the Bose SoundLink Micro may well be the way to go. The speaker is nice and portable, offers an excellent sound quality, and it comes in a few color options.

As you would expect from a Bose device, the SoundLink Micro should offer that classic Bose sound, including plenty of bass, even despite the speaker's small size. On top of that, the speaker connects to your phone through Bluetooth, meaning you can listen to music on your phone and from your favorite music-streaming service.

Down to $69, from $99, this is definitely one of the best Cyber Monday deals for music fans.

How learning to say 'no' allowed me to build a life that I love

woman thinking

  • Learning to say "no" in your work and life can change your life for the better.
  • Author Jessica Thiefels describes how saying "yes" to the wrong opportunities can have an adverse effect.

There's one particular word I say every day that I've found to be life-changing. It's one that we don't say nearly enough. One that, if said when you truly mean it, can alter the course of your life.

That word is "no."

While the word "yes" can be life-changing, we have a habit of saying that too often, often to our detriment. We often say yes because we're simply going with the flow. Take this scenario for example:

You get out of work after a long day, and all you want to do is go home, put on sweats and relax. Your friend calls as you walk out the door with plans for happy hour. She really wants you to go, and she's really excited — she's had a great day.

Instead of saying "no," and making the best decision for you, which is to stay home, rest, and show up as your best self at work tomorrow, what do you do? You say yes, go with the flow, and go out anyway. Because you don't want to hurt her feelings or leave her hanging.

While this is a harmless example, and one late night won't affect your entire career, there are many times when saying yes does have a negative impact on your life.

If saying no is life-changing, then why don't more of us don't do it? There are plenty of reasons:

  • Saying yes is easier.
  • We don't want to hurt someone's feelings.
  • We're afraid of being too selfish.
  • We don't want to make someone upset.
  • We're worried about what someone will think of us.

Unfortunately, when you say yes but would prefer to say no, you're saying no to yourself. On the other hand, when you say no when you want to say no, you're saying yes to what's important to you.

I've lived a life of saying no. I had five jobs in five years because I said no to bad bosses, poor treatment, low pay, and jobs that didn't fulfill me. In choosing to say no, to not go with the flow, I've built the life that I love.

Read more: I've chosen to leave 5 jobs during my career — here's how I knew it was time

I've hurt some feelings, and I've taken the more difficult way out every time the easy one presented itself. But now I'm running my own business, getting ready to travel the world, and living a life I could have never imagined would be mine.

If you want to build the life you love, peppered with the no's that get you there, here are a few tips:

Find your tribe

It's hard to say no to things that don't serve you if you're surrounded by people who always say yes (and expect you to do the same).

If your friends and family don't support you making decisions for yourself and your life, start networking. Spend time with people who have common interests and are actively building the life they love. You'll be amazed how refreshing that is.

Get clear on what you want

It's easy to say yes when you don't have a clear vision for what's ahead of you. I see this a lot when people accept a job that doesn't further their career. Without knowing where they want to go, they stay in place, saying yes when they should be saying no.

However, having a clear vision for your life is no easy feat. Some people spend their entire lives getting clear on what they want. As you attempt to do the same — in less time — remember that getting what you want in life may not be related to your job. Perhaps you don't know if you want to have kids or if you want to live in the same state where you've spent your whole life.

Take stock of your life: What isn't working for you? What no's will you need to say to start moving in the right direction?

It's not an easy thing to do, but when you choose to say no, and not go with the flow, that's when you begin to write your own story.
