Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade may need to ground its giant balloon characters because of bad weather

Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade pikachu

  • New York City is expecting wind speeds of up to 22 mph on Thanksgiving Day.
  • If winds sustain a speed at 23 mph, Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade may need to ground its balloons throughout the march.

This year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade may be more underwhelming than usual, as organizers could have to ground the balloons due to high winds.

The Central Park area in New York City is forecast to get northwesterly winds between 15 to 25 knots (17 to 23 mph), with gusts of up to 30 knots (34.5 mph) on Thursday, the National Weather Service reported.

If winds sustain a speed of 23 mph and gusts surpass 34 mph, Macy's character balloons and heritage balloons will not be able to fly throughout the parade, the New York Post reported.

As per tradition, the parade will kick off in Central Park West at 9 a.m. local time and end at the Macy's department store in Herald Square.

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Dave Dombek told the Post: "It's going to be very close to that threshold, likely right below it."

This year's line-up will feature 16 giant character balloons, 43 heritage balloons, 26 floats, 1,200 cheerleaders and dancers, more than 1,000 clowns, and 12 marching bands. Performers include John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Diana Ross.

More than 3.5 million people are expected to watch the event on the street, the local ABC7 news channel reported.

NOW WATCH: How Alibaba turned a fake holiday into a $25 billion shopping extravaganza that's bigger than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined

Some people are skipping Black Friday shopping to spend time outdoors — here are 8 underrated national parks to visit over the holiday

Lassen Volcanic Center (Lassen Peak)

  • The #OptOutside campaign beckons people to explore the outdoors the day after Thanksgiving instead of indulging in Black Friday sales.
  • Some of America's most spectacular national parks are also the least visited, providing serene escapes from the shopping mall crowds.
  • Late fall is the perfect time to visit parks in the south due to the sweltering temperatures they can reach in the summertime.

Some people find pleasure in rising from their turkey-induced slumbers in the wee hours of the morning only to battle the notoriously frenzied hordes of sleep-deprived shoppers over discounted toys and television sets. If you're not one of those people, there's a place for you.

Many places, in fact, provide refuge from the madness of Black Friday. America's national parks offer innumerable opportunities to work off that second helping of Thanksgiving stuffing or just a beautiful backdrop to ride out the post-holiday bloat.

REI started encouraging people to #OptOutside four years ago, when the outdoor retail brand closed its doors the day after Thanksgiving to encourage both employees and shoppers to enjoy the outdoors instead. The National Parks Service hopped aboard the movement in 2017, offering free entry on the shoppers' holiday. And while the parks will maintain their fees this year, they're sure to be less expensive than a 2 a.m. shopping trip.

Here are eight underrated national parks to visit on Black Friday.

Isle Royale National Park, Michigan

Michigan's Isle Royale certainly isn't among America's most-visited national parks— by no means does it have crowds comparable to Yellowstone or Yosemite — but its superintendent, Phyllis Green, told CBS News that it does, however, have "one of the highest repeat-visitor rates."

A park highlight, Mount Ojibway looks out over the rugged island and surrounding Lake Superior. The lakeside escape offers quiet camping, kayaking, and multi-day hikes.

Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado

More than 4 million people flock to the Rocky Mountains each year, according to the Denver Post, and Colorado's famed park will undoubtedly attract even bigger crowds around the holidays. The nearby Great Sand Dunes are a less congested alternative with views that are severely underrated.

Here, visitors sandboard and sled down what the National Park Service calls the tallest dunes on the continent against a backdrop of snow-capped peaks. The mother of all sandbanks, Star Dune, is 750 feet and takes the average person an hour to ascend.

Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky

Kentucky is keeping a big secret: it's home to the longest known cave system on the continent. So far, more than 400 miles of this underground network have been explored, according to National Geographic, and even more of it remains uncharted. Mummified bodies, ancient artifacts, and thousands-of-years-old petroglyphs have been found in Mammoth Cave, ABC News reported. Visitors can also  see the limestone caverns by lamplight on one of the park's lantern tours.

Instagram influencers are using hashtags about the devastating California wildfires to promote products

California wildfire

  • Many people have used Instagram to post photos of the devastating wildfires in Northern and Southern California, which have left at least 84 people dead.
  • Many Instagram influencers have used hashtags related to the event to promote unrelated products.
  • Using keywords or hashtags related to breaking news events to gain views is not a totally new phenomenon.

A slew of Instagram influencers are using the devastating California wildfires to promote products and make money.

Multiple users have been referencing the wildfires in Northern and Southern California or using related hashtags to post unrelated photos of themselves, and tagging their posts with brands they are sponsoring.

Photos of the fires' devastating aftermath, which can be found under hashtags including #californiafires, #woolseyfire, and #malibufires, all appear alongside ads for various products.

A post shared by Jayde Nicole (@jaydenicole) on Nov 14, 2018 at 9:51am PST on

"Like and Subscribe," a TV show that parodies influencers, and BuzzFeed both pointed out the phenomenon this week.

For example, @destinationvine, a company that offers private wine country tours in California, posted a photo of a bottle of wine to promote "Wine Wednesday," while using the #malibufire tag.

Skincare company @veridattacollection also posted a caption alongside the #malibufire tag saying that the "Malibu fires were life chaging for me," while linking to a photographer and the company's brand account in the post.

@_earn_with_emily, an account dedicated to bitcoin, used 19 hashtags containing the word "california" — including #californiafires, #californahighwaypatrol, and #californiatattoos — to advertise bitcoin mining in a Thursday post.

Using trending hashtags to promote products is not a new phenomenon. Many people on platforms like Twitter and Instagram have used keywords and hashtags related to breaking news events — like terror attacks — to sell their products and post unrelated content in the past.

This is called "keyword squatting," BuzzFeed reported, citing researcher Joan Donovan. It "in a sense is free marketing," Donovan said. "If you’re selling a product beyond just yourself, it could translate into cash."

Business Insider has contacted Instagram for comment.

The death toll from the Camp Fire in Northern California, and the Woolsey Fire in Southern California, rose to 84 on Wednesday night. Around 990 people remain missing.

33 gifts anyone who just moved into a new apartment will appreciate not having to buy themselves

The best part of moving in to your first apartment or home is getting to create a space that's all yours. Finding the perfect decor and picking out furniture is the exciting part, but after that comes all the expenses no recent grad or young professional wants to bare. A laundry hamper, pots and pans, bedding — these are just some of the distinctly un-fun, adult purchases they'll reluctantly need to make.

Though you might be tempted to buy them some new decor for the walls, we recommend getting them some combination of the necessities they wish they didn't have to spend their own money on, and the little luxuries that can make life infinitely better. Read on to see our picks for what they'll really want this holiday season.

Brooklinen Gift Card, from $50

Our senior editor calls Brooklinen's sheets one of the best purchases she's ever made, and many of us at Insider Picks feel the same way. They'll be able to choose from quite a few weaves/materials as well as a huge selection of fun prints and colors. A basic full set costs around $130, for reference.

A personalized trinket tray for all their odds and ends

McLaughlin Glazeware Initial Tray, available at Nordstrom, $39

Catch-all trays are the kind of gift that may seem underwhelming until they realize how useful they are. That was certainly the case when I was gifted one after college. Now I have a few of them around my apartment — one for keys and sunglasses by the door, one for my rings and jewelry by the bed, and another in the living room for lip balm, candle matches, and other small items.

A robot vacuum that makes quick work of chores

Eufy RoboVac 11S, available on Amazon, $219.99

Vacuuming is one of the great time-sucks in life — literally. Give them back their Sunday afternoons with the gift of a robot vacuum that'll take the work out of cleaning the house. On a personal note, I can't recommend this one enough. You can read a more thorough review of it here.

A Chinese recycling company spent $75 million on a Michelangelo masterpiece — and is selling shares in it for $10 a piece

Michelangelo Crucifixion

  • A Chinese company which used to focus on recycling has spent $75 million buying a Michelangelo.
  • Yulong Eco-Materials, which until recently was focused on recycling bricks and concrete, announced earlier this week that it had bought a depiction of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ by Michelangelo.
  • The company now says it wants to focus on collecting art, abandoning its recycling business.
  • It had previously bought a 61,500-carat gem known as the "Millennium Sapphire" in October for around $50 million.

A Chinese company previously focused on recycling has taken a novel approach to the diversification of its investment portfolio, spending $75 million to buy a painting by Italian master Michelangelo Buonarotti.

Yulong Eco-Materials, which until recently was focused on recycling bricks and concrete, announced earlier this week that it had bought a depiction of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ painted by Michelangelo.

Michelangelo Buonarotti is most famous for painting Rome's Sistine Chapel, and for his sculpture, David.

The company says it wants to "open the opportunity of shared ownership of its acquired masterpieces to anyone with a brokerage account," and said that it would pay for the acquisition by offering 7.5 million shares for sale at $10 per share.

In an abrupt volte face, Yulong now says it wants to focus on this business model, rather than recycling.

The Michelangelo is its second serious acquisition, following the purchase of a 61,500-carat gem known as the "Millenium Sapphire" in October for around $50 million. It also offered shares for sale in the gemstone, and has plans to take the jewel on a world tour, according to a Bloomberg report.

"Yulong has today pioneered this new disruptive business model by the acquisition and securitization of fine art through a Nasdaq-listed security," Yulong’s executive chairman Daniel McKinney said in a statement after the Michelangelo purchase was announced.

Shares in Yulong jumped as much 47% on November 19, the day the purchase was announced, while in October, after the acquisition of the Millennium Sapphire, shares increased almost 1000%.

Around a third of certain populations think their governments are 'hiding the truth' about immigration — here's why some people believe conspiracy theories

0

Linda Sarsour at the immigration protest

  • About a third of people in countries like the US, UK, and France believe conspiracy theories about immigration.
  • They think the government is lying to them about immigration figures.
  • According to a new study, there's an association between voting for Trump or Brexit and believing these theories.
  • Voting this way is also linked to believing conspiracies about climate change and vaccination.
  • Some people believe conspiracy theories because it makes them feel unique.
  • Others hold on to them because they are comforting and it gives them an explanation for their hardships.

One of the most divisive and influential talking points of elections around the world over the past few years has arguably been immigration. So much so, many people now believe conspiracy theories about how the government is lying to them about immigration figures.

In 2016, Donald Trump promised to "build a wall" between the US and Mexico, and to bring back jobs to the American people. In the UK, Nigel Farage ran a campaign saying the country had reached a "breaking point" with immigrants, and Britain had to leave the EU to fix it.

Some of the statements made by nationalistic parties over the world regarding immigration are based in truth and some are false. But what is clear is that immigration has become a buzzword that whips people up into a frenzy of anger and resentment.

Rather than seeing immigration as a positive for the economy, for some it has become a scapegoat for all of their nation's problems. And according to a new study from the University of Cambridge's Conspiracy & Democracy project, around a third of people in several countries think their governments are making things worse, and "hiding the truth" about immigration.

The study was based on YouGov survey data from nine countries: the US, Britain, Poland, Italy, France, Germany, Portugal, Sweden, and Hungary.

One of the major findings was that voting for Brexit or Donald Trump was associated with believing conspiracy theories, from climate change denial to the amount of Muslim migrants in the country.

Read more:The biggest threat to Earth has been dismissed by Trump as a Chinese hoax

Project researcher Hugo Leal said anti-immigration conspiracy theories have spread and gained ground since the refugee crisis happened in 2015.

"The conspiratorial perception that governments are deliberately hiding the truth about levels of migration appears to be backed by a considerable portion of the population across much of Europe and the United States," he said.

Who believes the truth is being hidden?

About 11,500 people were surveyed in total. The results showed that in Britain, 30% of people believe their government is hiding the truth about immigration, as well as 21% of those in the US.

But that figure rises to nearly half of those who voted Brexit in the UK (47%) and for Trump in the US (44%), compared to 14% of Remain voters and 12% of those who voted for Clinton.

In Hungary, with an anti-migrant prime minister Viktor Orban, 48% of people think the truth is being hidden, while in Germany the figure is 35%, followed by 32% in France and 29% in Sweden.

Also, more nationalistic voters — 41% of Trump voters and 31% of Brexit voters — subscribed to the theory of "the great replacement," which is the idea that there is a plan for Muslims to become the majority of a country's population. This is compared to just 3% of Clinton voters and 6% of Remain voters.

For reference, Islam is the second largest religion in the UK, but Muslims only make up around 4.4% of the total population. In the US, it's even lower at 1.1%.

farage breaking point

An 'alarming global trend'

The team also looked at other conspiracy theories. Both Trump and Brexit voters were more likely to believe climate change is a hoax, vaccines cause harm, and there is a secret society of people secretly controlling the world (like the Illuminati).

Leal said generally believing these sorts of conspiracy theories linked both electorates, and the level of science denial is an "alarming global trend."

Hugo Drochon, another researcher at the Conspiracy & Democracy project, said rising beliefs in conspiracies can have an impact on public policy.

"We tend to think of conspiracy theorists as isolated individuals who will become convinced you must be 'part of the plot' if you try and dissuade them of their beliefs, but there are structural issues at play here too," he said.

"We found countries that are more unequal and have lower quality of democratic life tend to display higher levels of conspiracy belief, which suggests that conspiracy belief can also be addressed at a more 'macro' societal level as well."

Read more:Trump has suggested vaccines cause autism — an idea that couldn't be more wrong

When looking at conspiracy skepticism, Sweden came out on top, with 48% of people rejecting every conspiracy they heard. The UK followed with 40%. Hungary was the lowest with just 15% not believing any.

In all countries except Germany, about half of respondents said they got their news from social media — usually Facebook or YouTube. Overall, receiving news from social media was less associated with skepticism, and YouTube was particularly connected with adopting anti-vaccine and climate change denial beliefs.

Andrew Wakefield

Conspiracy theories make people feel unique

In 2017, a study published in the European Journal of Social Psychology found that some people like believing in conspiracy theories because they want to be original.

Researchers assessed 238 people for their need for uniqueness, and their endorsement of 99 conspiracy theories. The results showed that believing one conspiracy theory makes it more likely you'll believe another, and that there was a correlation between this endorsement and the need to not follow the crowd.

The authors concluded that the results highlighted a neglected function of conspiracy theories: to present oneself as distinct from the crowd.

"All humans share not only the need to belong and affiliate with others but also to be different and stick out from them, to be an identifiably unique individual," they wrote.

In other words, if we are seen as the conspiracy theorist, we might not be regarded as always correct, but we will probably be remembered.

Immigrants are a determinable perceived threat

There's arguably something else going on when it comes to subjects like immigration. Often, real concerns of people like unemployment, cheap labour, and declining benefits cause people to place the blame on something tangible, like the foreign families who moved into their small town.

In a blog post for Psychology Today, psychologist Arash Emamzadeh highlights several reasons for hostility towards immigrants. For example, false negative stereotypes that immigrants are lazy, commit crimes, are more likely to live in poverty and depend on welfare, and refuse to learn the country's language.

There's also the perceived threat of "the other" — people who have different cultural beliefs and behaviours they don't understand. And the fact people from other countries may be working for less money, meaning there are fewer jobs than before.

People believe conspiracy theories for a number of different reasons, and this doesn't seem to be changing. As with the anti-vax movement, it's unlikely anti-immigration fears can be tackled with facts and figures alone. For instance, a Pew Research Center analyisis last October found that scientific literacy usually doesn't change a person's views on political matters like climate change.

Rather than spouting numbers, the solution probably lies with getting to the root of the problems people are facing. This is often what causes groups of people to be so open to alternative explanations, whether they are true or not.

This is an undeniably difficult task, but it is more important than ever, as such beliefs no longer lie on the fringe. Conspiracies now play a big part in nation wide policies and elections, giving them further validation.

"A telling takeaway of the study is that conspiracy theories are, nowadays, mainstream rather than marginal beliefs," said Leal. "These findings provide important clues to understanding the popularity of populist and nationalist parties contesting elections across much of the western world."

J.Crew is offering 50% off for Black Friday, and it shows that discounts aren't going anywhere for the moment

J.Crew

  • J.Crew announced that its CEO Jim Brett would be stepping down from the company last week. Brett had been leading the charge in J.Crew's turnaround efforts by lowering prices and expanding its low-cost Mercantile collection.
  • Analysts are now concerned that the store's prices could creep up without Brett at the helm of the business as it slips back into its old ways.
  • For the moment, discounts don't seem to be going anywhere. This Black Friday the retailer is offering 50% off most full-price items.

Last week, J.Crew's CEO James Brett, stepped down from the company after only just more than a year in the role. Brett, who had replaced longtime leader Mickey Drexler in June 2017, had been leading the charge in J.Crew's turnaround efforts by lowering prices and expanding its low-cost Mercantile collection.

And it seemed to be working, J.Crew's same-store sales numbers turned a corner in the company's most recent quarterly results after dropping for the last four years. In August, J.Crew's namesake brand reported a 1% increase in comparable sales for the second quarter.

In a statement to the press last week, Brett hinted that a clash with management was the reason behind his departure. This was later confirmed by The Wall Street Journal.

Sources close to the matter told The Journal that Drexler took issue with Brett's decision to start selling clothing on Amazon as well as his plans to grow the company's budget line, J.Crew Mercantile, worrying that it would cheapen the brand.

Analysts are now concerned that without Brett at the helm of the business, and the store only at the beginning of a turnaround, that it would fall back into its old ways and prices would creep back up.

Retail expert Neil Saunders of GlobalData retail wrote in a note to clients earlier this week that the management team's attitude to pricing prior to Brett was damaging to the brand.

"J Crew's leadership were not sufficiently humble about the brand’s status and were rather divorced from the realities of the retail marketplace. They seemed to cling to the notion that J Crew was a top-notch brand that deserved to charge top-notch prices – even when customers thought otherwise," he wrote.

He continued: "If the departure of Jim Brett hails the return of these unrealistic attitudes, J Crew is going to slip back and undo all of the progress made to date. Given the precariousness of its financial position, this is a mistake it cannot afford to make."

Despite this, its discounts and deals don't seem to be going anywhere this holiday season. This week, J.Crew was offering 40% off most full-price clothing, and 50% off on Black Friday.

Popular bedding startup Parachute Home has slashed all of its prices by 20% for Black Friday — here's what to buy

Parachute

Every part of your bed, not just the mattress or pillow, affects how you sleep. Parachute Home is a bedding and bath company that believes (rightly so) that softer, better sheets make a big difference, and that you shouldn't have to pay a premium to enjoy their advantages. This Black Friday, you may want to take advantage of this rare sale so you can enjoy the noticeably more comfortable experience of sleeping in Parachute sheets.

From November 23 through November 26, Parachute is offering 20% off everything on its site, plus free shipping and returns. You can use the code "SALE18" at checkout or in stores to get your discount. The promotion excludes furniture, gift cards, swatches, and donations.

In addition to bedding sets, Parachute sells bath towels, pillows, home decor, and other living essentials. From our experience, these products are among the best we've ever purchased for our home. A big reason why is that the company uses high-quality materials in all its wares, like 100% long-staple Egyptian cotton in its percale and sateen sheets.

When we first introduced Parachute to our readers, founder Ariel Kaye broke down the differences among the brand's percale, sateen, and linen sheets so you can decide for yourself which one is best for you. Since a common question is how they compare to the sheets from another bedding startup, Brooklinen, we put them head-to-head here

We've also reviewed its Classic Bathrobe, which attracted a 2,000-person waitlist, and bath towels, which we discovered there's more to than meets the eye.

Keep scrolling to see which Parachute bedding and bath products you should buy during the sale, or you can browse the whole site here.

Trump's economic sugar high is already fading, and his trade war could make it even uglier

trump frown new

  • President Donald Trump has boasted about the upswing in the US economy for much of 2018.
  • But according to economists at Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, and Bank of America Merrill Lynch, the economy is showing signs it could cool in 2019.
  • The combination of a fading tax cut stimulus, tariffs, and tighter financial conditions will all contribute to a slower pace of economic growth.

President Donald Trump has had a lot to brag about on the economic front in 2018.

Strong unemployment numbers. The highest quarterly GDP print in nearly four years.

But according to a growing consensus of Wall Street economists, the economy is showing fresh signs it could cool off in 2019, as the shot in the arm from Trump's policies wears off during the course of the year. Economists at Goldman Sachs, Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML), and JPMorgan all predicted that 2019 GDP growth will be materially lower than 2018.

"Growth is likely to slow significantly next year, from a recent pace of 3.5%+ to roughly our 1.75% estimate of potential by end-2019," Jan Hatzius and David Mericle, Goldman Sachs economists, said in a note to clients.

The reason for the slowdown is twofold:

  • The economists expect the stimulus from the GOP tax cut bill and the massive bipartisan budget agreement to start to fade next year.
  • "In the US, the double dose of caffeine from tax cuts and spending increases is already starting to wear off," Ethan Harris and Aditya Bhave of the BAML team wrote.
  • At the same time, the US is expected to get hit with growing headwinds from Trump's continued trade war with China and the Federal Reserve's interest rate hikes.

These two factors could make the economic sugar high fade even faster than expected.

"Monetary, fiscal and trade policies all are turning somewhat less friendly for growth next year," Michael Feroli, Jesse Edgerton, and Dan Silver, JPMorgan's economist trio, said in their outlook.

Fading fiscal stimulus

In the run up to the passage of the GOP's Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, or TCJA, most Wall Street economists agreed that the tax cuts in the bill would prompt a short-term bump for the US economy. While the size and duration of the bump were hotly debated, all three Wall Street economists expect the boost will start to fade in the second half of 2019.

There are already signs that the boost from the tax cuts are fading that could become more obvious next year, JPMorgan's economists said. They cited the slowdown in capital investment from corporations, for instance.

"The tax cuts already have been lifting growth throughout much of 2018 and we think that federal spending associated with the spending bill will firm noticeably around the turn of the calendar year," the JPMorgan economists said. "But the impact from the tax cuts likely is already starting to fade and the lift from federal spending will also ease over time, so we expect fiscal thrust to moderate toward the end of 2019."

mcconnell pence trump ryan

A big part of that will come from a relative slowdown in consumer spending, which was supported in 2018 by the tax cut's boost to most Americans' take-home pay.

"After-tax income jumped higher in February 2018 but will return back to its normal growth in February 2019," wrote Michelle Meyer, another of the BAML economists.

Similarly, the JPMorgan team said it expects that consumer spending will grow by 2.2% in 2019, down from the roughly 2.7% pace in 2017 and 2018, mostly due to "waning fiscal stimulus and tightening financial conditions."

Elsewhere, the Federal Reserve is also expected to continue interest rate increases in 2019 (much to Trump's chagrin). The economists said that would make it harder for businesses to borrow and tighten financial conditions. All told, the hikes will likely help to keep a lid on any upside for GDP growth.

Trade war troubles

Trump could further shoot himself in the foot by continuing to fight a drawn-out trade war with China.

  • A 10% tariff on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods is scheduled to increase to 25% on January 1.
  • Trump also threatened a tariff on the remaining $257 billion worth of Chinese goods that are not currently subject to duties. Those tariffs would fall more heavily on consumer goods, possibly weighing on American households.

The JPMorgan team said price increases for consumers would be more than enough to offset the 2018 boost from the tax cuts.

"The household sector was the beneficiary of a roughly $120 billion reduction in taxes beginning in early 2018," Feroli, Silver, and Edgerton wrote. "Next year, if 25% tariffs go through on Chinese imports, that would amount to a tax increase of over $100 billion, much of which would fall on the consumer."

Donald Trump Xi Jinping

Some analysts, like Seth Carpenter, the senior US economist at UBS, have presented even more dire possibilities.

As Business Insider's Will Martin reported, Carpenter thinks the trade war could actually drag GDP growth below 2% as early as the fourth quarter of 2018.

"We are outliers compared to the rest of Wall Street in terms of how big an effect the tariffs have on the US economy," Carpenter said in London. "We expect a material slowing in the fourth quarter of this year — so right now — into the first quarter of next year."

By contrast, the Goldman, BAML, and JPMorgan teams said the tariffs are likely to shave a few tenths of a percentage point off of 2019 GDP growth — and a deal to eliminate the tariffs could come during the year.

But this doesn't mean there isn't danger of an escalation.

"An even more dire argument for major escalation draws on concept of a Thucydides Trap," BAML's economists wrote. "This is the view that when one great power threatens to displace another, war is almost always the result. In this case, tariffs could extend to all trade on a sustained basis as the US tries to contain China’s emergence as an economic rival."

Here's how the new $400 Apple Watch Series 4 compares to last year's model, the Apple Watch Series 3 (AAPL)

Apple Watch Series 4

Apple debuted a brand-new Apple Watch earlier this fall, the Apple Watch Series 4.

The new watch has a larger display, upgraded heart-tracking sensors, and a faster chip than last year's model, the Apple Watch Series 3.

But it also bears several similarities to last year's model: the new watch gets the same amount of battery life (18 hours) and the design looks nearly identical to the Series 3, and to previous versions before that.

So whether you're a first-time Apple Watch buyer, or you're just trying to decide if you should upgrade from last year's watch, here's how the Apple Watch Series 4 compares to the Apple Watch Series 3.

SEE ALSO: There were two major no-shows at Apple's big iPhone event

The Apple Watch Series 4 and Apple Watch Series 3 bear a lot of similarities. Both watches come with the option for GPS only, or GPS plus cellular connectivity.

There's a price difference if you opt to add a cellular connection — plus, the Apple Watch Series 4 is more expensive than the now-discounted Apple Watch Series 3.

Here's the price breakdown:

  • Apple Watch Series 3 with GPS — $279
  • Apple Watch Series 4 with GPS — $399
  • Apple Watch Series 3 with GPS and cellular — $379
  • Apple Watch Series 4 with GPS and cellular — $499

On the design front, there is a change from last year to this year in regards to the cellular version. The Apple Watch Series 3 with cellular had a red digital crown, while the Apple Watch Series 4 with cellular just has a thin red stripe on the crown. Apple also added haptic feedback to the digital crown on the Series 4.

Both watches get 18 hours of battery life, and are water resistant up to 50 meters.

There are a few key design differences between the two watches. The Apple Watch Series 4 has a bigger case size than the Apple Watch Series 3, and it also has a bigger screen.

The Apple Watch Series 4 has a slightly larger case size than the Apple Watch Series 3.

Both watches come in two sizes: the Apple Watch Series 4 in 40 mm and 44 mm, and the Apple Watch Series 3 in 38 mm and 42 mm.

The upside of the larger case, however, is a larger screen:

  • Apple Watch Series 3, 38 mm — 563 sq mm display area
  • Apple Watch Series 3, 42 mm — 740 sq mm display area
  • Apple Watch Series 4, 40 mm — 759 sq mm display area
  • Apple Watch Series 4, 44 mm — 977 sq mm display area

  • The successful "Shark Tank" alum uses design features like its distinctive Honeycomb Arch Support System to set its socks apart and give your feet more support.

The holiday season is here and finding meaningful gifts is top of mind for pretty much everyone, even if it's just stocking stuffers you're looking for. While everyone has given or received socks as a gift at one point or another, the praise "oh, you shouldn't have!" can become quite literal with the wrong pairs. Bombas socks, on the other hand, will evoke the complete opposite response.

Founded in 2013, Bombas sought to solve all your sock problems by creating the perfect gym sock. Since then, the company has expanded to hiking socksdress socks, knee-high socks for womensocks for kids, and more. Each pair of Bombas socks includes key comfort features like the Honeycomb Arch Support System, Performance Footbed, Y-Stitched Heel, and Invisitoe.

Everyone deserves comfortable, supportive socks in stylish colors and Bombas is making it a lot easier to refresh your sock drawer this month. Now through November 26, you can save 20% off the entire site with promo code "BIGHOLIDAY20".

On top of saving big on great socks, you can simultaneously help those in need. For every pair of socks you buy, Bombas will donate one pair to a homeless shelter, where socks are the number one most-requested clothing item. Since its launch, Bombas has donated more than 11 million pairs to shelters. These specially designed donation pairs have an anti-microbial treatment, reinforced seams, and darker colors for longer-lasting wear.

Whether you're shopping for gifts, revamping your own sock drawer, or looking to help those in need, Bombas is the way to go.
